Problems with 2013 Ford F-150 STEERING

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while pulling out of the driveway, the control panel illuminated and the steering wheel seized. the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, but the failures recurred. the contact had the vehicle towed to davidson ford (18621 us-11, watertown, ny 13601) where it was diagnosed that the electronic rack and pinion failed and needed replacement. the contact purchased the parts and the dealer performed the repairs. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 42,383.

The steering automatically stopped working while driving on expressway at 70 mph. as i exited the highway, the steering countinuly was lost of power steering. luckily, i was able to make the truck drive home, but was very risky to drive trying to avoid driving off road, or avoiding car accident. i had no choice but to drive into work today, and feel this truck it's completely not road safe. the ford service center has told me the electric steering system epas needs to be replaced, and i am not willing to pay for this service since the truck has 45,000 miles . i have googled this epas electric steering question, and come to find out this problem seems to be in all of ford pick up trucks, which ford will not address this matter. what am i supposed to do? keep driving ? what will geico insurance say about this if i cause an accident? who would be the victim? me, the other driver's , ford, and geico pays the bill? thanks ,

When turning into a curve a speed 20 mph and above the traction control light comes on and the van pulls hard to the left. have taken it to the ford dealer several times and was told that it is not putting any error codes into the computer and that they have no idea what is causing it. van is very dangerous to drive.

The steering wheel anchor bolt 3/4 came loose, causing the steering wheel to rock up and down when slight hand pressure was applied to the steering wheel. this first happened when the vehicle was in motion on a highway. the steering wheel also could be rocked up and down while stationary with the engine not running. the repair cost for this was $208.32 excluding tax.

While making a left hand turn at an intersection the steering wheel violently turned to the right forcing my truck to swerve off the road. i had no control over the car and could not get the steering wheel to move. immediately the advancetrac warning light came on as well as the battery warning light. i did not lose power to the truck but was on able to turn the wheel. after a couple attempts of turning off the truck and starting it again i was able to get steering back. i tried to make it off of the freeway on ramp but was only able to make it a few feet until the steering failed again and swung the car to the right. i had the truck towed to the nearest ford dealership and they said that the steering gear failed. i was quoted $1950 for the part. the truck is just short of 60k miles and being out of warranty they said all i can due is file a report. i am having to pay for the repairs until my report is reviewed. i have read numerous reports of this same problem happening to other owners with the same year and make as my truck and think this is an extremely dangerous problem. i don't think it is right that any automobile can lose steering at anytime with out the option to at least maneuver the vehicle to safety. i am filing a report with ford to try and get reimbursed.

Electronic power steering (eps) seems to start to go out/off intermittently when making turns or driving straight. becomes extremely hard to control kind of like the old non-power steering cars. one minute your getting assisted turning (hard or slight), a second later manual steering, then back to assisted. when passing another car the eps seems to even not want to be consistent when i just slightly turn the wheel at high speed. again, it is intermittent but becoming more frequent.

While driving the truck steering got locked making the truck unsafe to drive on the highway. we took it to the local ford dealer, who could not explain why this happened. the dealer also informed us that they had to replace the same part on other vehicles in guam. also, ford has recalled 2014 f150s assembled in one plant for similar, if not same problems. we believe that this requires further research and an action need to be taken immediately before serious accidents happen causing loss of life. we did not get a satisfactory answer from the dealer. according to the dealer they brought it to the ford about this issue and informed them that they had to perform same work on other vehicles in guam. i appreciate if nhtsa take up this issue and investigate to avoid accidents and keep the highways safe to the citizens. thank you very much for your understanding and time to look into this issue.

Started having a problem yesterday with the steering catching on turns, it freezes up and is difficult to turn. had a mechanic look at it and he said the electronic steerinig assist is going bad.

Off an on losing power steering. can be very tight to steer. nearly pulled me into oncoming traffic when steering wheel kinda got stuck and did not recover to straighten truck. i had to pull wheel to get back in lane. been going off an on but now mostly manual steering and getting worse. nothing mechanical, rack n pinon, knuckles, ujoint, brakes, etc. ford hooked up diagnostic and it showed all good. no indicator lights on in truck.sounds similar to other recalls you have. ford looked at it a month ago. now cant get in for 2 more weeks. is it safe to drive?

My electronic power steering assist is not working. at a stop or lower speeds it is nearly impossible to turn the steering wheel. at higher speeds the steering wheel is still very difficult to turn or control. there have been several instances where the truck is very difficult to control and is extremely dangerous.

135,987 mi. 2013 ford f 150 econoboost powersteering assit went out! notice a traction fault couple days ago and it went away after i shut off my truck. the steering never did this and it happened in a parking lot making a sharp left turn! and then while trying to drive out of the parking lot turning out to the intersection no power steering???? just last year i had to replace my throttle body because my truck would go limp while driving! why isn't there a recal on the steering for this year?

76000 miles. power steering lost. limped to the ford garage and after 2 hours was told the power assist needed to be replaced - $1900.00!! really? 2014 models had the same problem but had a recall. why not the 2013's? first time ever after owning many vehicles that i've had an expense like this. ford? no more!! i could have got into an accident or even killed.

76000 miles. driving home and lost all power steering. luckily close to the dealership. limped in and they got it right in. the advance trac light was on and they checked it for over an hour. finally, they said the epas system has failed and it costs $1900 to replace it!

The electric power steer in my 2013 ford f150 truck is failing to work properly. it doesn't seem to be providing an power assist at all at low speeds. when taking slow speed sharp turns(90 degrees) the steer seems to lock up and i have to apply alot of force to the steer wheel to get the truck's wheels to come back straight again. this is a very unsafe situation. i purchased this f150 new from sugarloaf ford in winona minnesota in 2013.

2013 ford f-150 stx with 45k miles-- steering suddenly became difficult to turn and would briefly freeze up when city driving, moving at 20-40 mph. i took it to woltz and wind ford and found out that the truck had electronic power assist steering.an intermediate shaft was replaced at a cost of $428.further research on this problem has shown that there are many problems with this type of steering that can lead up to total steering failure and loss of control of the vehicle. i now am questioning whether to keep this truck that could cost me $2000 to fix when the rack needs replaced or possibly even cause an accident. other ford vehicles with this same problem have been recalled so why has the manufacturers defect in this truck not been recalled?

Steering started feeling like it was hanging up while turning. progressively got worse over days by happening more often. eventually to the point now where there is no power assist. the weirdest thing was at one point it started to work totally fine for about ten minutes then went back to total failure. this is equipped with the epas system. called dealer and was quoted a new complete rack o fix it at approx $2000. this system does have a recall on 2014s but not 2013s for what seems to be the same problem.

When driving approximately 20+ mph and turning to the left, the steering wheel intermittently gets hung up when returning to center and takes some effort to get it to continue on. this only happens on left turns, no issue with right turns at all. the issue started being noticed approximately 8 months ago, but seems to happen more often now. took it into the ford dealer and was diagnosed as an epas (electronic power assist steering) system that needs to be replaced. this is not a typical part that wears out and repairs are estimate at $1800. vehicle only has less than 60k miles when problem started. in doing some research, this is not an uncommon problem with this make and model & can lead to serious injury if system completely fails while driving.

2013 ford raptor super crew 27953 miles. oil change 2 months ago. oil life still at 69%. i went with the recommended ford motor company synthetic and ford motor company oil filter. i was on my way home from work about 10 minutes into my drive. i went to take off from a stop light and i got through the intersection and had an immediate reduction in power the truck was stuck at 1,000 rpms and would not do anything but slowly creep forward at 5 miles an hour. i limped to a lighted parking lot about a half block away as my low oil pressure light came on and a wrench icon on the dash. i shut it off and popped open the hood. i check my oil level transmission fluid level power steering level and everything was well above tolerances. i could find no problems and when i got back in the truck and started it, it ran fine all the way home. i just scanned the system and no error codes. the stop light road was at a slight downward angle and i had just below a half tank of 93 octane fuel. k and n air filter in stock holder. no other power train or engine modifications. loss of power, power steering and decreased braking. it would have been very dangerous had it not been later at night.

Electronic steering not working correctly very tight almost like it does not have power steering . started while i was in motion .

Twice in the last week the a warning to service the advance trac system came on and lost power steering. making it almost impossible to drive home. the next morning it worked fine, no warnings. i am afraid to let my wife or kids drive it for safety reasons.

Power steering went out as i was driving

I have had the ford truck death wobble, i barely missed a head on collision because of it. this has now happened several times, it starts unexpectedly when going 55 to 60 mph and hit a slight pump or unevenness on the road the front end of the truck goes into to a severe vibration and wobble that rapidly gets worse and make the truck uncontrollable and vary dangerous. the only way to stop the death wobble is to immediately slam on the breaks and come to a complete rapid stop. i cant believe this hasn't already been taken care of by ford giving how many of us out here are experiencing this issue. when this truck goes into to this violent wobble it is vary difficult to control, i am a 240lb male and almost collided head on with an oncoming car, if my wife was driving this truck when this happened her and the people in the oncoming car would have most likely died!

Wife made sharp left hand turn and power steering locked up! cleared and was fine ,for few days i was driving make left hand turn got, complete power steering assist failure! plus many other faults. got to local shop was told was able to clear most faults, but not the assist fault! has to go to dealer being told it will cost over 2 thousand dollars .called ford was told out of warranty! wife could of been killed! ford wont do anything!!

Complete power assist steering failure: while driving along a city street, i experienced complete loss of power steering, causing the driver (myself) to virtually lose all directional control.. i could only control the vehicle steering and bring it to a stop by using extreme physical strength to manually steer the vehicle.. if my wife had been driving at the time of occurrence she "would not have been able to manually steer the vehicle" and, would have almost certainly lost steering control... i had the vehicle towed to a ford dealership, who diagnosed that the steering rack needed to be replaced.... upon researching this fault, i have found clear evidence that this is a known problem with the 2013 ford f150 and subsequent years... ford issued a recall on the 2014 f150 for this fault, but not for 2013 vehicles... loss of power assist steering while driving this size of vehicle is an extremely dangerous condition to find yourself in and, may have already been the cause of accidents!! my opinion is that ford are very much aware of this steering fault, due to the fact that they issued a partial recall and, they want all old steering racks that are replaced, sent back to them! i requested the old steering rack that was being replaced, be returned to me... however, ford indicated a $400 core charge would be billed to me to for keeping the old part! ford needs to issue a broader recall regarding this fault on f150's before more people are injured or killed! this is a serious safety issue.

Hard steering control

61,000 miles power steering failed in motion fault on steering angle sensor not sold had to replace whole steering rack $2000.00 now in motion transmission fault code p7031 first gear sync will not shift from second to first without bucking. dealer says transmission needs to be taken apart thousands of dollars and 1500 miles out of warranty

On sept. 1st 2017 i started my 2013 f150 xlt 4x4 with approx. 93,000 miles and received a power steering assist fault, it has since been intermittent. i called the local ford dealership and was told to bring it in for repair and that it was not under warranty. i was also advised that it would be around 1300.00 for the repair.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. when the vehicle was started, the contact heard an abnormal noise was present. the contact turned the steering wheel in the other direction and the noise started again. when the contact shut off the vehicle and restarted it, "steering fault" illuminated on the message center and the steering ability became very difficult. the vehicle was driven to deltaville auto and marine in deltaville, virginia where it was diagnosed that the steering rack failed. also, on the way to the dealer, the brake warning indicator illuminated and "brake fluid low" appeared on the message center. the contact added 3/4 of a quarter of brake fluid, but by the time the vehicle was moved to the parking lot, the brake fluid was gone. there were no noticeable leaks. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 42,871.

While driving my vehicle on a city street (speed limit 45mph), and while in a turn, my power steering abruptly failed causing me to almost crash. i was able to recover and continue steering using my body weight to assist in steering which was very difficult. the power steering would then begin to work again, however it would continue to fail intermittently, suddenly, and without warning. i was able to get an appointment at my local ford dealership where they informed me that my power steering unit itself was fine, however it had a faulty sensor that was causing the unit to intermittently fail. i was told that the sensor was unreachable and that they were unable to replace it, so i would have to purchase and have them install a brand new power steering unit. this cost me around $2000 to replace a power steering unit that was designed with an irreplaceable sensor.

Received message "service advance trac" and "hill descent control fault" when turning left on city street and lost power steering ability making it nearly impossible to turn and control vehicle causing me to run up on sidewalk. took to dealer and was told epas failed and would require $2k to fix steering column.

I was drving my truck and with no warning or anything my steering became very very hard and had to take extra force to turn it the biggest problem was it happened ther morning i was coming back from vacation a 30 hour drive to get back home and be able to take it to the dealer to get it fixed it was very dangerous.

Dealership told me that the angle sensors are bad and the entire rack and pinion need replaced, upon further research i've seen vehicles with the same problem suddenly loose steering and were involved in accidents, my vehicle luckily hasn't had any issues yet other than knowing mines going bad and i fell it's a safety concern that i do not want to put myself or others in harm way and the dealership told me there are no recalls for the rack and pinion.

2013 f-150 xlt 4x4 electric power steering completely went out at 43,000 miles. the truck would out of nowhere, while driving, be very difficult to turn and almost caused a crash. it started small, but within 2 weeks completely went out.

While driving down the highway, the vehicle flashed service advance trac, down hill descent control fault, trailer brake module fail and a couple more codes. all electonics in vehicle went blank, including all controls/gauges. before doing so, last code read, shift to park. almost caused me to have an accident, because the power steering went out and nearly pulled me into another vehicle. the acceleration is bad too, feels like it is not firing all cylinders again. have already taken in for a number of issues, including crankshaft sensor issues(was losing power to driveline); brakes locking up (have replaced the rotors and pads six times and last time i replaced both calibers as well; front axles and bearings replaced. as well as, blinkers no longer work. when the first issues arose, problems have continued since, like i said have taken it in at least 6 times to a dealer and once to an independent mechanic. at first the problems were covered by warrenty, now they are not, there is only 99,000miles on the truck and has been in shop at least 6 times and is only 4 yrs old. not sure what to do, as the problems resemble recall issues, but dealership says they aren't part of any recalls. concerned for my safety on the road. the truck is now not driveable!!!

My local ford dealership is charging me $2000 for a steering gear that the internal module went bad. from my research, this is a very common issue with the 2013 model and is a recall on the 2014 model. its an incredibly dangerous situation when it happens. you completely loose power steering and get 3 separate warnings on the dash. i came within inches of hitting another vehicle in a parking lot yesterday. problem is, its sporadic, you never know when its going to happen. i called ford and they, basically, told me its not a recall because there wasn't significant "injury or loss of life" from this issue....but, i guess there was on the 2014 and up models... this is outrageous!! this needs to become a recall immediately! hope you guys can look into this and, hopefully, save the lives that ford is needing in order to fix this issue. Complete failure of power steering. multiple fault lights. hill decent fault, advanced track service fault, steering assist fault, and a couple more. whole driving, i went you make a left turn. turned the wheel about 3/4 around and it "popped" back to the right and then released allowing me to make the turn. once i stopped the truck and turned it off, i started the truck again and went to turn the wheel but it would only squeal when i tried to turn the wheel. would not allow me to turn at all. turned the truck off again and restarted it. no power steering at all now. dealer says probably around $2000 to fix. very dangerous.

Steering vibrates/hums noticeably while driving, although it is not constant. noticeable at low speeds, can't tell at high speeds. concern from reading other reports that it is the epas steering system which is faulty. had it confirmed at my ford dealer in december before my move to oklahoma.- they said i could drive it.

I have lost all power steering while the truck is in motion. the service advance trac light comes on. i have had the steering gear replaced twice now and this is in the last18 months, each time costing over $1700. it is very dangerous as it has always happened while i am driving. there have been recalls for the same thing in other years and there are all kinds of complaints to be read.
