Problems with 2011 Ford F-150 SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2011 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 63 585 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2011 Ford F-150

I was pulling into a drive and my brake pedal went all the way to the floor. luckily there was not a car in front of me, however it took much longer to stop the truck. my mechanic said it was the brake master cylinder...at 50k miles, ford should cover this.

No brakes when first started up. i had to throw it in park to keep from running over hill. after searching on line i find that this is a common problem with ecoboost trucks. ford should recall these and put the updated part on.

The brakes failed when backing up from a parking space at a local elementary school. truck continued to roll backwards while stepping on the foot brake. had been an intermittent issue with no ability to push down the pedal when in reverse. later that day the brake warning lights came on indicating a braking issue.

On morning start up in my driveway the brakes made a crunching sound w/ a stiff brake pedal and would still roll forward while brakes were applied and the engine in idle. the dealer replaced the brake vacuum pump and harness under extended warranty less $100 deductible. brakes work ok now but concerned if will fail same later after warranty. the dealer was very professional and courteous. problem mentioned in tsb 15-0105 as stated on my bill.

Truck sometimes has almost no brakes after cold start. 34004 miles

When first starting vehicle the brakes fail, they are hard to push and have to brake at all. very dangerous after being parked on a hill, i rolled out into the cross road and luckily there was no traffic, found out online that is serious problem with year truck and model and should be recalled and fixed before a death occurs. it is the 2011 ecoboost 3,5.

Vacuum assist pump went failed with no warning. luckily it happened at a repair shop, but the fail was sudden and complete. if this had happened on the road either at low or high speed, it could easily resulted in loss of life. the fail was complete resulting in no way to stop the truck at all.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while attempting to engage the brakes, the brake pedal became difficult to depress. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the electronic brake vacuum pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred two months later. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 58,000.

When i first start my f150 2011 and move it the brake pedal is hard as a rock it will take at least a few minutes to get back to normal, but it happens all the time when first start up. i did some research and found that a vacuum pump that provides power braking gets corroded. in my opinion this part should be recall because is a safety issue you could loose braking, i checked on the part and it cost around 600.00. this issue should be looked into before someone gets hurt.

Brake pedal is really hard after start up, yet the brakes don't work. brake assist vacuum pump whines few several seconds at start up. truck rolled in the ditch at my house a couple times while i was backing out. luckily, my ditch isn't very deep and no damage to my property or vehicle has occurred up to this point. this has happened to me several times, it is not an isolated incident. this is an expensive repair, and i really hope it doesn't cause me to collide with another vehicle or run over another person in a parking lot or somewhere similar before i can afford to perform the repair. according to my internet research, this is a fairly common problem with this model vehicle, and should really be recalled before someone is seriously hurt or even killed.

While backing out of my driveway one morning i was not able to brake because my brake pedal felt like it had seized and was stiff. i pushed extremely hard and it helped the vehicle slow down and there was a slight grinding sound. after the truck sat for a few minutes, the brakes began to work. this has happened to me on several different occasions now where when the truck has been idle not running for approximately 8 or more hours, the brakes seize and do not work for the first few minutes. i believe that this is caused by the electronic vacuum pump for the brakes malfunctioning. this is a serious safety concern because if the brakes should give out while i am on a main road and going full speed, lives could be in danger.

Bad vacuum pump causing the pressure in the brakes not to function properly. when you press on the brakes its really hard to stop in motion.

I have a 2011 ford f-150 fx4 ecoboost with 44,100 miles. when the truck is first started after sitting for 4 hours plus, the braking system fails until the vehicle has been running for a couple of minutes at which point the braking system comes back. this happens every morning when backing down a flat driveway or backing out of my parking space at work (truck has been sitting for 8 hours). from what i am reading, this appears to be a common issue with 2011 ford f-150 ecoboost trucks. i brought this issue up with my local ford dealership and they said there was nothing they could do about it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving at approximately 20 mph, the steering wheel seized. in addition, the vehicle drifted slightly to the left and the brake pedal was hard when depressed. the vehicle continued to drift and crashed into the front of another vehicle. the contact stated that the "service advancetrac" warning message displayed. the air bags did not deploy. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. a police report was filed and no injuries were reported. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

While traveling the vehicle unexpectedly puts itself into park. the vehicle then locks up the breaks and skids across the road. after skidding the vehicle's throttle does not work and the vehicle is inoperable. this has happened for approximately two (2) years. it has happened while driving at high speed (70 mph) on a limited access highway facility. it has occurred at stop lights. in one instance while at a stop light the vehicle ceased to operate and was struck by another vehicle. last week was notified by the vehicle manufacturer that they were conducting a recall for the exact reason that has caused me problems for the past two years. the malfunction has caused mechanical damages to the vehicle's suspension, steering, tires, and acceleration. the vehicle vibrates uncontrollably at any speed over 35 mph. there are also rattling inside and outside of the vehicle.

F-150 ecoboost 3.5 l shifting to drive from park, brakes become stiff and will not stop vehicle at idle. after several attempts, engine vacuum returns brake assist. appears to be a failure with the electronic brake vacuum pump. this only occurs at startup.

When starting the truck and backing out of my garage, i had no power assist brakes. i was able to press harder on the brakes, however i did come close to hitting my house and the abs was activated. this is the second time this has happened with this vehicle. the first time was taken care of under warranty around 26000 miles. i was informed that since the vehicle is outside of bumper to bumper warranty coverage, and it has been over a year since i had this part replaced last, it would be around $600 for parts and labor out of pocket (for something that has failed twice in about 51000 miles).

The brakes on our truck have started to fail when the vehicle is first started. it used to be less frequent and only after sitting over night but has increased in occurrence and is now occurring each time you start the vehicle. if you put the truck in drive, there is a mushy brake pedal and the anti-lock brakes kick in. in reverse, the pedal is mushy and there are no brakes. once the truck has been running for a few minutes and you have pumped the brake, the brakes seem to work okay. the dealership service department has replaced the vacuum booster but this did not fix the problem. because the problem has gotten worse and more frequently, it is worries one that it may happen when driving. we trailer a lot and we live on a very steep graded road.

as i start my 2011 ford f150 3.5 ecoboost after it has sat for some time, such as overnight, i have no power brakes for 30 to 45 seconds, the pedal becomes stiff and the truck keeps moving even under heavy breaking. this is dangerous because i often park on an incline or on a steep grade. i have also lost my power brakes when i was pulling a trailer and had to take evasive maneuvers and use the transmission to slow me down until my brakes came back. at no time did i get a warning that my brakes were failing or any kind of code to check brakes i talked to the dealership and the said it was a common problem and that the brake vacuum pump had gone out. and they said for 600.00 they would replace the pump. i decided against it and he told me it would be fine to drive it like that. this seems so dangerous and ford is unconcerned about possible brake failure and an accident. i don't let my wife drive it anymore because i'm not sure she would know what to do if it happens while she is driving.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving at approximately 5 mph and then depressing the brake pedal, there was an abnormal sound emitting from the vehicle. in addition, the contact stated that the brake pedal failed to respond without. the vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 45,000.

I was backing out of my driveway and felt the brake pedal get soft like i had no power booster. the truck was very difficult to stop. i had to pump the brake a few times before the pedal stiuffened up a bit. this has happened everyday since, but only in reverse and only if i go in reverse 1st. the pedal seems a little softer than normal going forward but not near as bad as in reverse. i replaced the front brakes on 7/25/2015 (rotors and pads- high end replacements) and that did not help the problem. i just replaced the rear brakes on 8/15/2015 (rotors and pads- again better than oem) and i can still tell there is something not right when i back up as a first action. the pedal still needs to be pumped a couple of times before it feels better.

The brake pedal did not depress as it should. instead it was impossibly hard and had no braking force at all. the dealership inspected the problem and diagnosed a failing vacuum pump. there is no indicator light to notify the vehicle occupant of a problem and this is a severe safety hazard just waiting for injury/death to occur.

Brakes fail after start up for a minute of two...(vacumm pump failure?)

F-150 with ecoboost 3.5l gdti engine. electric vacuum pump that supports the brake booster stopped functioning. brake pedal feel was hard and vehicle was difficult to stop at times. there were no signs or indicators of the malfunction, other than the hard pedal feel which came on slowly and therefore difficult to notice until vehicle was difficult to stop.

I was driving the truck home from work (not experiencing any issues). i began to cross the ship channel bridge in houston, tx when my low brake fluid light came on. after i crested the top of the bridge i tested the brakes to make sure they were working properly (and they were). i decided to continue driving to the closest auto parts store to see why the light came on an to top off the fluid. when i went to exit the freeway (about 3 miles from when the light came on) i pressed the brake pedal and it went all the way to the firewall (i had lost all breaking power). i immediately pressed the emergency brake and downshifted the transmission to help me get the truck slowed down. i was able to make it to the shoulder without incident. i then had the truck towed to the dealer where they determined then cause of the brake failure was due to a rupture of the seal in the master cylinder. i had the brake booster and master cylinder replaced ($700) and they ensured me the problem was resolved.

Started truck, put in drive went 25 feet applied brakes, truck did not want to stop. peddle was hard as a rock and would not go down. i let up on the peddle and applied again, this time it worked a little. did it one more time and it worked fine.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving approximately 5 mph and depressed the brake pedal to stop at a stop sign, the anti lock brake warning indicator illuminated. the brake pedal was pumped and the vehicle slid into the intersection. the failure recurred on two other occasions. on the third occasion, while driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal failed to respond when depressed. the brake pedal was pumped as the contact slid into an intersection. the contact clipped the rear of a jeep that was traveling approximately 60 mph, causing the jeep to flip over twice before landing upright. the contact and the driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries that required medical attention and were transported by ambulance. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to a body shop, but the failure was unable to be determined. the damage to the vehicle was repaired. the contact also stated that when the windshield wipers were powered off, they would independently swipe across the windshield approximately every ten seconds. the contact stated that the fuse had to be removed so the windshield wipers would disengage. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 59,000.

Vehicle service brake lost power assist accompanied by loud noise underhood possible electric brake assist fault. repair facility unable to duplicate problem at this time.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving 50 mph, the brakes failed to engage and failed to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was merged to side of the road. the vehicle did not display any warning lights. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the brake vacuum needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. however, the failure recurred. the contact stated that the part has been replaced twice on the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 68,000. the vin was not provided.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving at 10 mph, the brakes failed and caused the vehicle to become difficult to stop. the contact stated the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacture was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 44,000.

Brakes do not work at warm temperature s

No braking when just starting up. when you start the vehicle and shift into gear the brake pedal is very hard and it is very difficult to get stopped. i searched the internet for similar problems and found many instances of the same issue. apparently the brake booster vacuum pump seizes so no power brake assist is available. after the engine runs for a short period the brakes will function normally. you will get no notice that this condition exists via a warning light or check engine light. this situation is very dangerous, a building, a tree, or a person could be behind you and you would not be able to stop. ford must be aware of this problem because they re-designed the pump for the 2013 model year but have not recalled the 2011-2012 models to correct this problem. the parts are expensive ($700) and many on line posts say the parts are on back order at ford. this is a serious safety concern and should be addressed expedited.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while reversing at a low speed, the brake pedal was depressed, however, it took a longer distance to stop the vehicle. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who was unable to diagnose or repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 40,000. updated 02/10/16*lj; 4/30/18*jb the consumer stated that the vacuum pump needed to be replaced. *js

This f150 is a 3.5 ecoboost with electric brake assist vacuum booster. the vacuum booster started making a very loud noise when applying the brakes and it felt like the braking power was diminished. i took the truck to the dealer and they told me it was the vacuum electric assist pump that was bad. they did replace it and helped me with the price even though the truck was out of warranty by time. if this comes to be a recall, i would like ford motor co. to reimburse me my out of pocket expense.

In may 2015 my 2011 ford f150 3.5l ecoboost began making a buzzing noise in the front left fender well under the hood. from that time forward the truck makes the noise upon start-up. once the vehicle runs for a while the noise seems to fade away but returns upon restart. a technician tried to diagnose the noise at a local repair shop but to no avail. the noise has gotten worse which prompted me to take the truck back to the repair shop to diagnose again. this time i did some research on the matter and noticed that there was some concern about the vacuum pump in some of these model trucks. upon picking up my truck the technician informed me that he thought it was the vacuum pump and that i should take my truck to the dealership to have them diagnose the problem and that the part is only available through ford at this time. i made and appointment with the ford dealership with the service manager about the noise. he was familiar with the problem and said that 9/10 times the vacuum pump is the problem. he explained that ford had switched vendors for the part and redesigned the pump in newer models and issued a (tsb) regarding the pump. since my truck was just outside the warranty period he said i would have to pay for the repair, which was quoted at more than $900. the service manager told me that the part was on back order until mid august 2015 and that i should schedule to have the repair completed then. i asked if there was a safety hazard associated with continued driving and he said, "no, the only thing that could happen is you could lose your brakes or possibly 4 wheel drive, but you'll notice that the brakes are heavy if its going out completely." i feel that ford should be responsible to replace the defective part that they acknowledge as a problem and have redesigned, and which can cause brake or 4 wheel drive failure putting myself and my passengers at risk.

My breaks made a growling sound from the front left side behind the headlight. as time went on it got louder and the breaks were harder to apply in order to stop the vehicle. i took my truck to the local ford dealer and they replaced the vacuum pump.they charged me $597.40 for this repair that i feel should have been covered by a ford recall! the dealer told me that they had this same problem with numerous other trucks.i feel that this should have been a recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while attempting to engage the brakes, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. the contact mentioned that the brakes resumed normal function only after shutting the ignition off and restarting the vehicle. the dealer diagnosed that the power brake vacuum booster malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 15,000.

After the truck sets for 8-10 hours, when you start it up you will have a very hard brake pedal but no brakes. the vacuum pump that supplies vacuum to the power brake booster is sticking and failing to supply vacuum at start up. if i put the truck in neutral and press hard on the brake pedal for about 10-15 seconds the pedal will go down to the normal height ( the pump brakes loose and starts to supply vacuum) then the brakes will be fine until the trucks sets for an extended time. i removed the vacuum pump and found that the pump housing was busted. it looked like it had gotten moisture in it and had froze. in my search on line i found many people having problems with this pump. *tr

Failure of boost on power brakes due to non operation of vaccum bosster pump on 3.5v6 4wd truck. major safety issue, no tsbs or recalls that i have found. there should be!!! *tr

Started hearing a wining pump noise from behind the driver-side headlight. days later i was parked just off the road on a slope, started the truck and it rolled down the slope right into the street. the brake pedal felt soft and non-responsive. there was also a chattering noise made. i pumped the brakes a few times and it worked normally again. i stopped and pulled forward to get out of traffic. the same sequence of malfunctions has happened several more times since the first incident. i have ordered a new vacuum pump to fix the problem.

After the truck had been parked for a week, i started the vehicle and proceeded to move it. there were no brakes for about 3-4 minutes. every time the vehicle would be parked overnight, the brakes would be inadequate until they had been depressed several times. after that, they would be fine until it was parked for more than a few hours. on june 3, i took the truck to the dealer to have them looked at. at that time, i was informed that the brake booster had a leak, and they proceeded to replace the booster at my expense. they are now operating to my satisfaction.

Vacuum pump failed and truck could not stop at intersection! *tr

On several different occasions after starting my ford f-150 ecoboost i experienced difficulty stopping the vehicle when approaching an intersection. my spouse complained that the vehicle "took off" after she put the truck in reverse in the driveway. i complained about this issue to the dealer on 3/16/15 saying that i was unable to stop at a stop sign. i told them it felt like i was being pushed into the intersection. my initial feeling was that the engine was overpowering the brakes. the turbo can be heard spinning up after a cold start. i am unsure if it is really brake or engine/transmission related....updated 09/15/15 *bf updated 10/31/2017*cn

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal was depressed abruptly and hesitated to respond for a great distance. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was unable to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 82,000.

At my house, the driveway is sloped. i had just parked the truck, turned the engine off, but left key in accessory position. my two daughters were in back seat (3 and 8 years old) watching a movie. i walked into my garage to drop off coffee, went back to the truck to retrieve pastries and then walked them into garage. i was out of the truck for 3-4 minutes. i went back to truck and took my three year old out of her car seat. she sits in rear seat, passenger side. i had her in my arms when i opened passenger side front door, reached across to remove keys. when i removed the keys from the ignition the truck began rolling down the driveway. my 8 year old was 1/2 out of the truck when it began to roll. i quickly put my 3 year old down and grabbed the 8 year old out of the truck. the truck was making a metal clicking sound the entire time it was rolling. truck rolled down the driveway, across the street and into the neighbors yard. their tree stopped the truck from rolling further into the yard and their house. the truck was still in park when i went inside to start it back up to move it back into the driveway. i drove it the ford dealer about an hour later. ford dealer and fomoco were involved for several months. eventually a 'specialist' was flown in to look at truck. in the end, they claim there are no mechanical defaults and therefore, they are not responsible. they are unable to answer any questions as to how the truck did not move for the 3-4 minutes it was on the driveway when i was back and forth to the garage. they also have no explanation for how the truck rolled even though it was still in park when this happened. end results is ford claims they never repaired or modified my truck. i have no way to prove they did or did not repair anything during the periods of time they had my truck in their possession. *tr

The brakes on my 2011 ford f150 failed due to a master cylinder failure. the engine then injested the brake fluid and blew the engine. ford refused any repairs.

I started to notice that every morning i had no brakes when pulling out of my driveway. the brakes would also not work for the first minute or so upon start up. i also noticed that my braking was very limited when i was giving it throttle especially over 60mph. upon bringing it to the dealership they found that the vacuum brake pump was not turning on at all so there was no power assist for my brakes. i checked out online to find out that this is a common problem where people are loosing all of their braking power when going down the road. my concern is that if i did not correct this that i very well could have killed myself or others due to the lack of braking. *tr

Going up highway @ 55mph. pulled around a vehicle to pass. once, i was in the oncoming traffic the engine suddenly lost power, chugged, and was stumbling over itself. i then got back behind the vehicle i was passing. the 4 passengers and i were all quiet and then freaked out. after a while we pulled out and accelerated to go up road again, truck dogged out. we had no clue what was happening, but everyone was freaked out. we called birthday party destination to tell them we have vehicle trouble and can't make it. drove it down hill all the while worried the engine was going to blow. drove it directly to dealership who stated they had no clue and did not want us to leave it there. said set up appt. 7-10 days out. parked it until appt. then they replaced all spark plugs. we also have had troubles with the braking. where it suddenly takes extra effort and requires the driver to press hard on the brakes to get it to slow down. when we've driven it to ford for repair they throw their hands up, act frustrated, like they do not have any clue as to what the problems are. we were hesitant to renew our state tags as it sits parked most of the time, since it chugged on level surface with no rain present, and the mechanics light came on. we feel scared driving it and it has remained parked for 3+ weeks. this is our newest vehicle, which looks new and yet we can't drive it. we're not made out of money, and can not easily replace this truck. we want ford to fix the engine and the brakes, and not act like they have no idea about these problems. ford wants us to take the loss on the vehicle value or continue driving it until something bad happens. they want nothing in writing. and, we do not want to sell the vehicle to a stranger. we'd allow you to inspect our vehicle....and drive it for a test drive. would you want to be driving this vehicle with your young children as passengers?
