Recently reported STEERING problems on 2011 Ford F-150

I was driving at about 45-50 mph and turning left on a large 90 degree curve on the highway and the steering wheel would not return to center without much effort. the truck made a sudden unresponsive move into the oncoming traffic, as i was trying to straighten out the vehicle. i got the truck to respond to a safe area. very dangerous

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that while operating the vehicle the power steering had malfunctioned causing the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn in either direction. the message "traction control" and "power assist failure" had displayed during failures. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. the manufacturer (cas-25454075) was notified of the failure but not assistance was offered. the local dealer was not notified. the failure mileage was 90,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving 30 mph, the power steering seized and the service power steering now warning indicator illuminated. the contact was able to drive the vehicle home, but had great difficulty maneuvering the steering wheel. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the failure mileage was 144,610. *dt*jb

Driving in a strip mall the steering locked up and a code stating power steering assist fault warning came on. i had to forcefully steer into a parking space to get out of the way from thru traffic. i turned off the engine and restarted the truck and it reset the warning. i was able to drive to an o'reillys where they were not able to help me. the steering locked up again at o'reillys. i had to call a nephew to help me with truck to a shop to see what the problem was. three same code came on. there should be a recall for this issue. it is very dangerous.

Right after we purchased the vehicle it started sending signals for error codes. taken to shop cleared codes ,started again a week later. now the electric steering system has gone out. no warning just stopped working. the vehicle has 91037 miles on it.

While turning the power steering would get hard to turn. this would happen about once a month. while turning you could feel a tight spot where it was hard to turn then it would loosen up then become tight again. the truck is currently in the shop getting a new power steering unit put in

Driving down the highway at 70 mph with no other previous indications the steering wheel jerked hard to the right then the power steering was gone. the power steering fault message and service advancetrac message were displayed on the message center. i pulled to the side of the road and attempted a shut down and restart. the service power steering now message was then displayed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving approximately 65 mph, the steering ability seized and went from power steering to manual steering. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact pulled over to the shoulder, turned the vehicle off, unhooked the battery to reset the computer, and the vehicle restarted normally. the contact also stated that the failure occurred twice. the vehicle was driven to crown ford (256 swain st, fayetteville, nc 28303) where it was diagnosed that the front end power steering needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 220,000.

I was on a two lane residential road. it had been raining and the street was still damp. the speed limit is 35 mph. i was slowing to make a left turn, when the power steering went completely out. i barely missed hitting 3 telegram poles which are located at the intersection. the power steering assist failure blinked on and off so quickly i am still not sure if i read it correctly. i was also too busy trying to correct the vehicle out of the on-coming traffic. i was turning off the 2 lane road onto a residential street in a residential neighborhood, that normally has cars parked and intermittent vehicular traffic. i was scared to death. i am grateful that i was slowing for the turn and more grateful that there was no on-coming traffic. this happened without any warning and it took me approximately 15-20 minutes to make it home (which is less than a half of a mile). the power steering was completely gone.

I was driving at 70mph on the freeway with my family in the truck. this section of the road is described as an "s" curve. while entering into the first curve the steering wheel became difficult to control. it was intermittently changing from stiff to soft and back to stiff. so at times i had to fight to hold the steering wheel in position, but fearing that if i turned it too hard it could reach a soft section of control and slam my family into the brick wall. this section of the highway is 3 lanes each direction, and this was during rush hour. with so many similar complaints, i don't understand why there has been no recall to address this potentially deadly problem. this time my family and i were lucky.

Intermittently the steering wheel will tighten at low speed in reverse. steering assist fault appears on the dash. nearly impossible to steer once this occurs. happened pulling out of the driveway twice today in reverse.

I had just picked my son up from daycare and was turning off highway on way home and i lost power steering. then service advanced trac and power steering assist fault was flashing on the cluster screen. and not even a year ago i just had the rack and pinion replaced on this truck.

No power steering. vehicle was stationary

As i was leaving the parking lot and pulling into traffic the steering on my truck locked up and became extremely hard to move. almost simultaneously the truck put a code up that said service power steering. after almost having a head on collision i pulled off to the side of the road shaking in terror as i was trying to figure out what could've possibly went wrong. with a little research i did and found out that there are other people that have had the same issue and the power steering rack and pinion module went out without warning. this is an immediate danger to any person that uses public roadways for themselves in other people they need to get this off the road immediately and recall this part.

While driving the truck on the city road i made a u- turn and the steering skipped. i drove it the next day on the city road and the steering got worse and the turn blinkers failed to come on. then 2 days later, while parked, i attempted to back out of the drive way and the steering is completely gone and squeals insistently. the truck is equipped with a epas (electronic power assist steering) system which has failed. in doing research on line, there is a consistent problem with the epas system and i am sure i'm not the only complaint. if this is a known issue, then it should be addressed as soon as possible. my truck is now sitting in my driveway undrivable.

Just after entering a highway, i noticed i had no power steering at all (with dash displaying "power steering assist fault"....had this happened just minutes earlier, i could have gone off a cliff. i pulled over and shut it off. i restarted truck and was able to drive it home at a very slow speed in case i lost p/s again. what the heck ford!!

Was turning left into walmart when steering went completely out. very hard to turn, harder to turn than manual steering. pulled into parking lot turned off vehicle to inspect. when trying to turn after restarting vehicle, vehicle made loud whining sound. traction control light came on...then steering failure light came on...with in a few minutes whining completely stopped. lights remain on when running. steering completely out...no power assist what so ever

Power assist steering just goes out while driving at highway speeds

While backing out of the driveway, the vehicle lost power steering and warning came up on the view screen saying torque angle sensor fault. after pulling vehicle back into the driveway and turning off the key the system operated normally, except there was a lot of slack in the steering and some pulsing when steering at slow speed. i took the vehicle to firestone to have it checked and was told i would have to have it checked at the dealership. on the way there, it lost power steering again while turning onto a back street. i shut off the vehicle and restarted it. this allowed me to drive it to the dealership. they put it in the shop and i was told that i would have to have the entire power steering unit replaced. the service advisor told me when i picked the vehicle up that it had malfunctioned on him while taking it into the shop.the part was around $1,600. with labor, alignment and taxes, it cost over $2,400 to get the vehicle back. i heard that the 2014 model vehicles had a recall for the same issue, but mine was not covered because it was a 2011 model.

Steering is very erratic. did not even know i had electric steering. from past experience it felt like i am low on power steering fluid. went to add fluid and discovered there is no pump or hydraulics. steering assist is very unreliable and drops out with out notice and impossible to steer with control especially when making turns in either direction. this is not safe.

My eaps (electric assisted power steering) seems to be acting up. the issue doesn't occur all the time but when it does its hard to turn the wheel left or right then turn it back straight when making a turn. i have mechanical background and ran a diagnostic to see if was a sensor but nothing comes up. i also have viewed some online forms and it seems other people have the same issue. i will provide the link for a site that i found others talking about the same issue. i previously owned a 2010 ford escape and i remember having a power steering recall with that. from my experience in the automotive field i know some vehicles have the same issue as others. no accidents have happened for me but to avoid them i thought i should report this in the event this is a recall. https://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/f-150/2011/steering/steering.shtml

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that extra strength was required to turn the steering wheel. in addition, the steering seized a few times, which caused the contact to pull over. once the vehicle was turned off and restarted, it operated normally; however, "power steering assist failure" appeared on the instrument panel. the contact scheduled a diagnostic appointment for may 29, 2019 with five star ford richland hills (6618 ne loop 820, north richland hills, tx 76180, (817) 500-0096). the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 71,150. the vin was invalid.

Steering sticks. when driving and changing lanes or turning on sharp curves, it feels as if the power steering briefly goes out. while trying to change lanes at a gas station this past weekend, steering briefly was stuck causing me to almost hit a neighboring vehicle. it appears carcomplaints.com has 320 complaints about the same issue. i did take it to a ford dealership after a previous issue several months ago and they confirmed the issue.

The power steering failed, it is almost impossible to steer. this is a serious safety issue, and could easily result in a deadly accident. i am not finding a recall for this, although it is obvious that ford has known about it for years. the dealership wants $2295 to repair it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving 10 mph, the stability control warning indicator illuminated and the turn signals were inoperable. the vehicle was taken to gjovik ford inc (located at 2600 us-34, sandwich, il 60548, (630) 552-8058) where it was diagnosed that the steering gear needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 47,000. *bf *as

The service advancetrac light comes on regularly while trying the steering wheel at low speeds. it used to not be as common, but has gotten worse i. the past 6 months. today i tried slowing down while making a right turn and the steering g locked up on me mid-turn. based on the same diagnostics as hundreds of others with this problem, it's indicated that the entire steering rack will need replaced. ford knows about this problem with not just the 2011 models, but with the 2012 and 2013 models as well.

Full power steering system failure. zero power assist.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving 30 mph, the steering wheel became stiff and was unable to be maneuvered. the vehicle struck a curb, as a result. there was no crash. the contact drove the vehicle home and turned off the engine. when the vehicle was restarted, the service advance track indicator was illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer and dealer were not aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 138,000.

While driving in a deep curve, it becomes hard to straighten the steering wheel. it is like it loses its power steering for about 1-2 seconds and once you force it straight, the power steering begins working again. it will be fine for a few days and then start acting up again. sometimes it is a full on stick in one position, other times it is jerky sticking as you are trying to straighten it back up. it has almost cause me to run off the road multiple times; i have had to learn to not panic when it happens and just slow down until i am back in control. the eps needs to be recalled on these before deaths occur. i have three very young children that i won't even drive around due to the fact that it is so dangerous to try to drive on in curves. this has been off and on happening for about 1.5 years now. i am going to try to sell the truck and have been researching getting it fixed and if it was a recall her recently and i find it to be ridiculous that it will cost $2,000 on a truck that is only worth $10,000. it is even more crazy that it is something that has to be paid for when safety is the sole reason to do it. ford should definitely fix this safety concern and get rid of the eps system.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving 45 mph, the steering failed. the contact pulled the vehicle over and waited thirty minutes to restart the vehicle. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the dealer had not diagnosed or repaired the vehicle. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 56,000.

While driving the truck on a city street, upon turning into a driveway the power steering stopped working. this caused a real problem trying to correct the turn. upon investigating this it has come to light that there has been a problem with the electric power assist steering. not only on this 2011 f150, but various other ford models and years of manufacture. the dealership and ford customer service says no recalls have been issued. i believe it is time to issue a recall because this is an expensive repair and ford should own up to this problem that has been ongoing for years! why should the consumer be put into this dangerous situation and expensive repair? it's time nhtsa to stand up and tell ford to fix this problem! this vehicle can not be trusted on the road anymore and it sits in the driveway. now, if the nhtsa wants to pay $2,000 to repair the epas, all will be good. then the nhtsa can send the receipt to ford if they ever issue a recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact received an unknown recall notice regarding the steering. the parts to do the repair were unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue and was not able to confirm when the parts were to become available. the contact had not experienced a failure. parts distribution disconnect.

Steering is stiff when cold, and while making turns it sticks in the turn position and is difficult to correct while driving.

Takata recall: after the vehicle has sat for an extended amount of time, 8+ hours, the steering column or rack seems to lock up. when you attempt to start the vehicle and drive, you do not have any steering response from the rack. the steering wheel is locked in place with only 15-20 degrees worth of 'play'. also, while driving, the steering wheel seems to stick periodically while navigating down roads (city and highway). when the road curves and you turn, the steering seems to click, or jump a little, making the vehicle over react. this has caused multiple accidents to others, and no recall has been issued at this time for the 2011 model year by ford.

While driving the other day my steering got really hard to turn all of a sudden, then it worked normally. it has since happen a couple times usually while making a turn - i am afraid to drive it because if it happens in a turn i might hit someone. i have since read that some vehicles are being recalled - but didn't see mine. this recall should be expanded to cover all electric power steering vehicles.

The steering is now hard. the eps no longer is working. i was driving down the highway and it just became difficult to steer.

First problem is the electric power steering. today i was driving home from work everything working fine, moderate traffic, and i happened upon a sharp curve in the road where i completely lost electric power steering and almost careened into oncoming traffic. i pulled over to gather myself and slowly drove to the closest pull off. suddenly my power steering was working again. this has happened 5 times now. ford cant find anything wrong but they are happy to replace the electric power steering box for $1800. it is an un serviceable part so it must be replaced. this system is faulty and dangerous. this all occurred during city driving. there should be a recall before someone is hurt.

When turning the streering wheel it gets hard .you have to make sure both hands on streering so you can bring it back the wheels wants to continue turn it will release after a while hard to control

Power steering is "sticky " and does not return to center after a turn , this requires constant steering effort to stay within ones lane. there is also a sticking point when turning the wheel in one direction.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving 30 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle became difficult to maneuver. the contact had to use excessive effort to operate the steering. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 82,000. *tt

While driving my steering rack suddenly broke making it nearly impossible to handle and avoid vehicles on the roadway on a city road about to enter the highway.

Power steering electric assist is not working all of a sudden difficult to turn, pulling out of gas station on to highway

I got into my ford f150 to go to work and the steering locked up on me, i could not get it to steer at all. i called the dealership repair center that i purchased the truck from and told them what happened. they came and towed the truck to the dealership to have a mechanic look at it. the next day they called me and told me it was the steering column and the entire thing was needing to be replaced at a cost of over 2000.00. i had the truck for less than four months.

Was making a left turn getting on they highway when steering got hard, making it hard to turn almost getting in an accident, traction control light came on but went back off. engine light came on ,went back off. this has been going on since february, called local ford dealership basically was told no recall, no complaints, but they call look at it at our cost. it's gotten worse, since then going around curves or making turns it takes full strength to make the turn . some times its easy like it should be .brought it to a local mechanic shop to see what they say and after looking at it ,they said it needs,to go to dealership they can't do anything with it .this needs to be fixed before someone gets hurt .

Steering sticks and is erratic on the interstate. when turning left the steering sometimes sticks giving the impression the truck is over rotating around corners. changing lanes on the interstate is dangerous as sometimes the steering sticks causing the truck to veer. i thought it was just me until i found tsb 11-08-18. ford has known about this problem for years! i'm not happy and believe this should be a recall. will it take someone getting killed first? steering is pretty important.

Steering intermittently locks up on primarily left turn. problem has been worsening to include turns to the right. when it happens, steering will totally lock up making driving and completing turns impossible. extreme safety hazard. slightly turning steering to the left & right sometimes corrects the problem. speed and road conditions do not seem to be a factor as to when the steering wants to lock up, just turns. condition has been worsening over the past couple of months. cold weather, however, does seem to worsen the problem.

I was driving one afternoon and all of a sudden when i turned my steering wheel it would let out a high pitched screeching noise and my steering wheel would lock up. i couldn't turn it left nor right because it was stuck but if i forced it it would unlock but still make the screeching sound. and this is where i am at almost wrecking 5 times that day trying to get home and not being able to drive to work with my car due to the fact my power steer is failing for no reason what so ever.

My 2011 ford f150 with electric power steering sails while driving. it starts out working fine and then once the truck is up to speed it's difficult to turn the wheel between 11 o'clock and one o'clock on the steering wheel. the malfunction does not throw a code on the pcm so the dealership says it's fine. but i'm looking around on a lot of different blog sites in hundreds if not thousands of other people are having the same problem with their electric power steering suddenly not working. i drive-in snowy icy conditions for work during the winter in this problem has almost caused numerous accidents because of the jerky motion you have to perform to change lanes or steer. i would really appreciate if this issue could be investigated because there's no recall from ford.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving 10 mph, the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 140,000.

While turning in traffic my epas steering went out almost causing a wreck. i already had dealership change epas rack and pinion and i have same problem. there is a recall for 2014 trucks with same issue. its definitely a safety issue.
