We have classified the 348 complaints from 2011 Ford F-150 about STEERING into the following categories.
Steering sticks when making a turn, must be pulled back to straighten out. while driving
Electronic power steering quit working making it extremely hard to steer vehicle. operator of the vehicle would need to apply extreme pressure to steering wheel at any speed to keep vehicle on the road or within lane of travel. i noticed this issue driving on city street when i went to turn at a corner. this issue would make recovery for skid in winter weather extremely difficult.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving approximately 50 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle then lost power. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump relay box failed and caused the fuel pump to burn. the mechanic stated that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact called cavalier ford lincoln greenbrier (1515 s military hwy, chesapeake, va 23320, phone: 757) 424-1111) and was informed that he would be responsible for the diagnostic and repair fees. the vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that they knew about the failure and, in order for the vehicle to be repaired, there would be a fee. the approximate failure mileage was 78,000. the vin was not available.
My power steering went out while trying to leave a parking lot which resulted in me almost hitting another parked vehicle. while moving, the steering would lock up for a second or two before allowing me to adjust the wheel. after taking a turn, the steering locks out in the direction of the turn and makes it very difficult to get the truck back driving straight. apparently this is going to cost me over 1,500$ to get fixed. ford has done recalls of thousands of other vehicles for this same issue, so why not include the f-150 in the recalls? people shouldn't have to pay almost 2 grand out of pocket for faulty parts. this is a safety issue and it is going to lead to someone being seriously injured or killed.
2011 ford f-150 lariat approximately 77,000 miles. power steering assist warning comes on and off along with the power steering going out. so far it has only happened while stationary so other than being difficult to steer there hasn't been an issue but if it happens when turning it could definitely cause a serious crash. after a quick google search i found this is a tremendous issue for this year model truck. i cannot believe there has not been a recall issued especially in light of ford recalling thousands of other models for problems with the steering assist.
Rack and pinion is shot. the steering would stick while you were driving it over the last 2 yrs. went to move the truck into our shop and the steering locked up on it.
I have a 2011 f150 with 65k miles. i noticed extra play in the steering at just under 60k miles. i had power steering module recalibrated. i thought this fixed the problem. approx 3mos later i am having the same issue. loss of control at high speeds and corners. i had alignment done today which did not fix the problem. dealership said i needed a $1600 steering gear replaced. they couldnt tell me why this would fail with low miles unless it was a faulty part. after researching consumer complaints online it looks like there are many complaints about accidents on low mile f150s of this year due to steering failure. when i asked if the vehicle was safe to drive if i could not get this part right away, ($1600) they said that it is not unheard of for the steering to fail. they could not tell me why a recall for safety has not been done.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving approximately 35 mph, the steering column seized. the contact was able to maneuver to the middle of the road and manually restart the vehicle, which temporarily allowed the vehicle to be functional. the failure occurred without warning. the vehicle was taken to maples ford (900 main st, warsaw, mo) where it was diagnosed that the steering gearbox was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 33,885. .*bf updated 8/20/18*jb
When turning hard left or right, sitting still and while driving on highway, the 'traction control systems warning light comes on 'need to have serviced' i have to stop the vehicle, turn off ignition, open the driver door, start and stop vehicle twice for light to go off. i,ve been told by several ford mechinics that the entire steering system has to be replaced and i 'm fortunate that steering hasn't yet locked up... quoted approx $2000.00 to replace electric steering.
Im having issues with the power steering feels like the steering wheellocks up then releases. very dangerous around corners.
Was driving to take my son back and all of sudden lost power steering and a message came on said power steering asist fault and i cant drive now just 80000 miles called ford and the rack and pinion went out supposdly will happen every 75000 to 80000 miles is all that electrical steering is good for gonna cost 1800 bucks which dont have and think its bs theres no recall on this year of truck have it on other makes models but this one and not understanding why ???
Received power steering assist fault warning when car was started this morning. vehicle performed normally the day and night before. vehicle disabled the power steering function so that only manual steering was available. the power steering system is an electric system.
Takata recall: steering is binding when slightly turning left. it gets stuck in that position and has to be forcefully moved back to center.
When driving on the highway, there is intermittent resistance when trying to turn the wheel also, the advance track light comes on and that limits the turn signal availability. i have been told by my mechanic that i have to replace the entire rack and pinion steering to fix this, at $1800. there is only 84,000 miles on the truck. looking online, ford has recalled thousands of other models during this time, but not the f-150 - why not?? ford needs to issue a recall on this before someone gets killed.
My vehicle no longer will assist with the power steering. the wheel feels like it's sticky and won't return to center. if making a turn the steering wheel just stays in place.
Takata recall - after making a 90degree right turn has a locking feel have to pull back center line. noticing a difficulty going straight feels as if it wants to steer in manual mode like cars did without power steering. only have 49400 miles.
I was about 3 miles from home when i started to feel the steering becoming hard to turn. about 2 blocks from home i had difficulty making a right and left turn till i drove up to my home, had some assistance in turning the steering and backing up the truck into drive way. after that steering went out. had to get it towed to a ford dealership. had a to almost $2,000 for the repair
While driving the traction control light will come on and the electronic steering goes out rendering the truck unable to steer. after the truck is restarted the light goes out only to happen again at some point. i was told this is a very common problem by ford mechanics with the 2011 f-150. i have talked to 4 other owners that have the same year truck and three of them have had this very same thing happen, how come ford has not been forced to recall these effected trucks and fix the deadly situation or at the very least had to cover the repairs as these symptoms arise. this seems to happen more right after a bump in the road or while on a left turn. it takes super human strength to then try to keep from striking a car head on in the left lane.
Took vehicle 2011 f-100 to ford service center for service engine light diagnosis. ford dealer informed me vehicle was misfiring and needed plugs and coils. dealer then informed me that the vehicle also needs steering rack replacement as codes reveal a rack failure. service advance track light was on. quoted $1800.00 for steering rack replacement. vehicle now has 83200 miles on it. this light has been coming on and off for at least the last 2 years. dealer says total failure is a certainty in time. after research on internet i find that ford has identified this problem on vehicles in my model year and has done nothing about it . safety concern is that steering could freeze while driving and result in accident.
I was backing my f-150 down an alley out into the street when i had a sudden and complete steering failure. the steering wheel did not just feel stiff but locked up as if it were being held by something. there was no indication from either symptoms or any type of warning light as to the fail prior to this. after torquing on it. it finally broke to the right and then was able to move the wheels but it wanted to lock in certain positions. i am a big guy and could hardly move the wheel when it was trying to lock up. my wife would not have been able to move it at all. i have read the information since on this system and have found that the problem is consistent to the type of devise used to drive the power assist. when the electromagnet fails it locks into position rather than assisting the steering. this is very dangerous as it takes an incredible amount of power to move to steering wheel if this happens. this should not be an issue on a 5 year old truck that has just 50k this month.
When driving on the highway, if i make a slight turn to the left, there is resistance when trying to return the wheel to straight ahead. also, the advance track mechanism (skid control) has been disabled which also limits the turn signal availability. i have been told by my ford dealer that i have to replace the entire rack and pinion steering mechanism to fix this. this is definitely a safety hazard and hard to understand given that i have less than 80,000 miles on the truck. ford needs to issue a recall on this before someone gets killed.
I have a 2011 f150 with just under 44k miles. took the truck in for a set of front brakes and was advised that there was a small leak not exactly sure where it was coming from. within less that a week the engine was not engaging took it back to the dealership they advised that i needed a new transmission as there were no fluids in it. needless to say i was quite surprised as we had just topped off all the fluids in the past two weeks. not real sure about this, but i had a new transmission put in picked it up upon leaving the dealership i had another problem the steering seemed a little tight ended up taking i the truck back to the dealership the advised that i replace the electronic power steering assy and program module to vehicle. i wasn't too sure about this so i had the vehicle towed to the dealership that i normally deal with as the current one had terrible customer service and was unwilling to contact ford on my behalf they said it was coincidence that this was happening. i have not had any problems with the truck in the past it has run perfectly. my guy at my dealership took the truck in and had to put in the power steering assy. this all happened within a period of 3 weeks and i had to pay for a rental car.
Mileage on 2011 truck is 110,000. at low speeds, steering will seize and need to use my own strength to turn. this happens intermittently, and ford really needs to do something about this. i have come close to hitting many cars in parking lots. also happens usually when i am backing out of my driveway for work, not a good time to scare me.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving approximately 55 mph around a curved road, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the vehicle started to jerk and the power steering assist and advance traction system warning indicators illuminated. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and was able to drive home despite the difficulty steering. the contact called preaus ford motor (206 s main st, farmerville, la 71241, phone number: (318) 368-3805) and was informed to bring the vehicle in for a diagnostic test at the contact's expense. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer due to the diagnostic and repair fees. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 146,540.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving approximately 35 mph, the power steering suddenly failed. the contact slammed on the brakes to avoid crashing into a nearby building. the dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
This week i had a total failure of my epas(electric power assisted steering) in a 2011 f150. i'm very thankful that this happened while i was in a parking lot on a military base. i didn't have the slightest clue on what was going on with my vehicle until i had to do a little research and the over following concerns reported about the epas shocked me! being a mother of two little boys i've very great full that this did not happen while i was driving on the highway. ford needs to address this concern because the outcome could have been very bad for my family.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving at various low speeds, the steering wheel seized without warning. the contact used excessive force to regain control of the steering wheel. norm reeves ford of ceritos, ca was made aware of the failure and it was determined that the rack and pinion failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 55,000. the vin was not available.
The steering sticks while driving, most of the times while driving streight, but sometimes while turning it will become hard to trun.
2011 f150 steering failure , when failed steering failed stability control and steering went. while making turn steering would " lock" preventing tempary control of pickup, before completing trip power assist went totally out. contacted ford they state that the power assist needs to be replaced from description alone, they also had recalled multiple other vehicles for this issue how ever the f 150 is not one of those and it will cost 3 k to fix.... umm if all your other vehicles are doing this and this one is doing the same thing then its a defect! the only thing that helped me prevent the accident from happening was my training as an evo ( emergency vehicle operator) at the time of failure i was turning in front of semi , if i would not have taken the ditch and prevented measures this would have been a quad fatality . truck is parked at a dress given unable to drive home
The epas steering system has intermitent hard steering issues. sometimes it will want to stick when turning and very hard to turn back straight. it is like it is manual steering.
While driving the steering wheel gets stuck and locks up. i have to then slow down or stop in the middle of the road and turn the steering wheel to the opposite direction. this has happened many times, and it doesn't matter if i'm on a country road, city street or interstate while driving. i have told the dealership several times about this problem since i purchased the truck in may 2017. it continues to be an issue. i am afraid i'm going to get rear ended or hit another vehicle when this problem occurs.it doesn't matter what speed i am traveling either.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving 5 mph and making left turns, the steering wheel locked up without warning. the vehicle was taken to a local dealer (apple ford of lynchburg, located at 2113 lakeside dr lynchburg, va 24501) where it was confirmed that the steering module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 104,882.
While driving thru a parking lot i received a warning "service advantrac" then while making a turn into a food drive thru another alarm went off. power steering assist fault. i lost all power steering and nearly crashed into the drive thru sign. this all happened within minutes. when the steering goes out there is not advanced indications or warnings until it happens. the electric assist motor is just disabled. you have no steering at that point. it is harder to turn then an older manual steering vehicle. the entire rack n pinion steering unit has to be replaced due to under engineering. it is one motor but is embedded into the rack. the cost alone is 1200.00 for the rack not including labor to install and reprogram. to me this is an extreme safety issue that will some day get someone severely injured or death due to a non steering vehicle. at the time of the failure i had just driven over a very steep and windy mountain road. scary to think what might have happened if it had failed on that road.
My problem is almost exactly like the one stated from thermpolis wy dated june 02 2017 i also have 103,000 miles on the truck.i noticed on the interstate speeds above 50mph the steering catches in center position causing an over steer when changing lanes.(very dangerous).my cost to replace the electronic power assist is $1400
When driving and you make slight turns and go back to straighten wheel out the steering locks up for a few seconds. from all the research i have done it seems like the electronic power steering assist is the issue. i noticed this to happen as we were driving through the mountains. i see online others having the same issue. it is very dangerous. the wheel gets very hard to hold onto and i would hate to have to be in a big turn and can't turn the wheel back especially if we are going at a normal speed. this will act up at anytime on any type of road. from research this can be quiet expensive for the repair, as it is causing other things to be affected that may need repairs as well.
While driving about 10 miles per hour on a dirt road my steering wheel locked as if the truck had been turned off, causing me to crash into a tree. the brake pedal was firm.and would not depress.
While driving the electronic power steering will suddenly alert and fail and the vehicle is nearly impossible to steer.
Becomes stiff and vehicle is hard to control. this occurs at low speed ,high speed. when turning i have to muscle the steering wheel, the truck will start to drift out of the lane or travel and continue in that direction instead of returning to center. i am always correcting the direction of travel. the truck will travel in a straight line. it acts as if the front end alignment is out pulling the truck one way and then the other once corrected. it's almost as if you are fighting the steering. the entire time in am driving my truck. i have another 2011 f150 and i can't wait for that one to start having problems
My truck would intermittanly make a chirping noise and would temporarily be hard to steer while driving around town. one of the warning lights came on so i took it into the ford dealer. the first time, which occurred in june, they couldn't find anything wrong. the second time i took it in (7/21/17), the ford dealer called and told me the electronic stability control was shot and needed to be replaced. they told me that i was lucky i brought it in as it was hard to steer. i have did an internet search and found this problem has caused ford trucks to crash. i wrote a letter to ford detailing the problem (attached) and sent them links to complaints from other ford truck owners.
The steering wheel sticks when turn it left even slightly left. sometimes it sticks very tight and becomes difficult to return to center while driving and causes the vehicle to jerk hard. when driving at normal highway speeds the steering wheel will suddenly start pulling left and you have to be quick to correct it or it will toss you in the other lane. it started about 30k miles ago and has become worse and worse as i pass 100k miles.
With 44,000 miles on my truck the power steering literally just stopped working on my way home from work. truck is 6 years old well maintained and low mileage. ford warranty has expired and truck was just payed off a month ago. called ford about issue and read online of all the issues with same problem acrossed the nation. was givin standard sorry for your luck it will be a total of $1900.00 to fix your problem.
Driving truck at highway speed decided to make a left hand turn , slowed to near stopping speed and started to turn and steering wheel froze and nearly crashed truck ,couldn't budge the steering wheel .acted as if engine turned off but truck was still running, i popped hood disconnected battery for 10 minutes hooked back up and still no steering, with both hands i could turn it max 1 inch in either direction, 25 miles from home took 2 hours and backing up and forward several times to even make a very small corner, un-safe and definately not buying another f-150. took to shop with hoist and took electric power steering assist apart and belt was chewed and destroyed, can't buy a belt anywhere , all parts and ford want $1200 to $1700 for complete rack all it needs is a $5simple belt to fix it. anyone know the part # for belt? 2011 f-150 hd tow pkg 4x4 5.0l epsa belt part #
Steering binds when turning, both when going into a turn and returning to center (straight). most noticeable on city streets. i must use extra arm strength in both maneuvers. problem first noticed about 2 years ago. has gotten progressively worse since.
While driving my steering wheel locks and the service advancetrac warning appears in the center cluster. you can overpower the wheel lock but at highway speed it almost caused a major accident with my two kids in the truck. i called ford customer care and they have stated that they have never heard of the problem and i have heard that this is an expensive repair. the problem is happening daily now and also happens at low speed when turning.
My truck's steering is "sticking" like the power steering is going in and out. when going around turns my truck often gets stuck in turn position. even when going straight it goes in and out like it sticks.
2011 ford f-150 with 103,000 miles. electronic power assist steering (epas) motor failure. ford makes replacement of the failed part itself unavailable and requires you replace the entire steering rack and epas motor, an estimated $1600 at the dealership. parts are also unavailable from anywhere but ford. steering often "catches" at speeds above 4o mph causing the driver to jerk the steering wheel out of the "catch" and often times over-correct the vehicle. this is especially dangerous when it happens at highway speeds unexpectedly.
I have a 2011 f150 truck it's saying power steering assist fault, service advancetrac, when i turn the wheel it makes a loud noice still drivable but dangerous. i have looked everywhere online there is recalls on this exact same thing just not on my vin for this truck but same year an truck has recalls. this is very dangerous an very expensive to fix your self . this is a ford default an they are not wanting to fix i'm willing to go through all levels to see to it they fix it.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving highway speeds, the steering seized and required excessive force in order to be moved. the failure occurred without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 94,000.
Steering unexpectedly becomes stiff and vehicle is hard to control. this occurs at low speed ,high speed. when turning i have to muscle the steering wheel into a turn and then back out of a turn. i am concerned that the steering may completely lock up or cease at any time which could result in a devastating event.
My vehicle along with thousands of others are driving our roads with faulty steering. the steering wheel literally gets stuck & you almost kill people. ford knows this & has recalled some models because of it, but not all models were recalled due to costs. they wont do anything though because the cost is too high to fix. i had to pay 1900 for an entire new steering system in my truck. on a side note, ford dealers will inspect & pass your state inspections with this steering problem. "steering is not an inspection item from the state"
