While driving 75 mph on interstate 40, vehicle went into fail safe mode (happened a couple of times). subsequently, engine began with a ticking noise with ever increasing rattling/shaking to a point that the engine had to be turned off. this happened numerous times while stopping or idling in city traffic. local ford dealership replaced all coils & plugs, throttle body, fuel filter, etc. vehicle ran fine for six months, however the rattling, knocking, shaking, surging, stalling have returned two fold. vehicle is now experiencing a massive oil leak from the engine. had it checked by an independent mechanic who could not make the repairs (but did complete an oil change). ford motor company is totally responsible for these issues. these issues are not just inconvenient and expensive but mortally dangerous to the passengers of the vehicle as well as to anyone in close proximity. step up ford!
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. upon starting the vehicle, it idled and the contact heard a rattling noise coming from the engine. the contact also stated that the vehicle had an oil leak and the check engine indicator illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to have the ignition coils replaced; however, the failures continued. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 184,994.

Vehicle stalls and or surges and has dead spots. after many attempts to solve the issue it still persists. looking on line it is a common problem with this vehicle.2005 -2008 f 150 5.4. it is especially dangerous when towing a trailer my wife has almost got into accidents a couple of times while towing a horse trailer and is now afraid to drive the truck. spoke to ford but no real response. i think this issue needs to be looked at further especially when considering people do tow with their trucks and it amplifies this issue. thanks mario .
Ford had an extended warranty on their 2005 5.4l engines in the f-150 trucks. the extended warranty was for customer satisfaction program 07m08. the extended warranty covered fuel injector failures but failed to cover the result of those failures. i lost several injectors which resulted in "damage to other powertrain components." those component were the catalytic converters. both of my catalytic converters failed. the vehicle would hesitate when accelerating and fuel consumption increased as the catalytic converters continued to fail. emission testing was never performed of this vehicle. i can be assumed that emission testing would have failed while the vehicle was still under the 07m08 coverage.
Exhaust manifolds are leaking and causing exhust fumes to enter the vehicle. truck has aprox 120,000, issue started at around 80,000. it's at the point now where it makes people in the truck sick and it won't pass state inspection. cam phasers make noises as well. wo know when this engine will fail. common problems with the 5.4 v8 engine. well documented on the internet.
Purchased ford f150 from old saybrook ford, feb. 16. the truck has the 5.4 engine which has numerous complaints of engine failure. driving on route 1 when truck eccelorates or loses power. when we bought the truck the chain guide was broke and eating through the case. spark plugs get stuck in engine or propel them selves through the truck hood. dangerous engine to have on road. i owe 8000.00 on a truck that now needs 4-6000 worth of work.
Following purchase from a ford dealership with a tune up and milage related service completed my 2005 ford f150 ran for less than 6000 miles before a stuck fuel injector caused a failure of the engine. at the time i was coming to a stop under normal conditions following a 18 mile commute from my previous stop. a metallic sound was heard and the drive became shaky and weak in accelaration. i proceeded 4 blocks to the dealership to assess the problem.the faulty fuel injector which was undetected until complete failure and resulting damage to engine components. this problem is well documented by other ford owners online will cost my family over $6000 without a recall on the parts known to fail widely in these vehicles.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while operating the vehicle, the odor of exhaust fumes was present inside the vehicle. also, when the engine was started, a ticking type noise was heard under the hood on the passenger side. the cause of the failures was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer and local unknown dealer were notified, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 130,600.
Vehicle went into "failsafe" mode on two separate occasions within the last year! and most recently, two weeks ago! both at highway speed on two different interstates in florida! very dangerous, and hard to control vehicle to "limp" to a safe place to stop! many possible causes from electrical, fuel, or engine issues that are well documented on many internet sites and f150 forums! also rust issues on roof of vehicle in rain channels! very common, and very poor design!
My 2005 f150 xlt 4.6l engine blew out the #3 spark plug. this is a terrible inconvenience and frightening to think that it could happen at any time and leave you stranded in the middle of "no where", a very dangerous situation, could even be life threatening and yet ford will not own up and take responsibility for their inadequate design. to think that this could happen at any time and leave me stranded in the middle of "no where" is very frightening and could be dangerous and life threatening. this could prove very costly at $280 a plug..
I was driving in my 2005 ford f-150 5.4 when the engine shut off on its own. it was not the first time. it has happened while i'm driving in the middle of traffic. just recently i was driving when i started to loose power, but this time started hear a loud banging coming from the engine. i drove the truck with almost no power to the mechanic. there i was told that it a cam shaft issue. as they uncovered the engine ii was told i would a new engine at the cost of $7500. as i later went online i found many people complaining about the same thing with ford 5.4 engines. it seems to me ford knows about the problem but are not willing to stand by their problem. i have kept up with the maintanance since have been the only owner of the truck. i love the truck but i'm very disappointed with ford not taking responsibility for having engineered a bad engine. i the single provider of my family and don't have money to be throwing away on new vechical. i also believe the truck stalling out in the middle of a highway was completely dangerous and i was lucky not be hit by anyone else. please help.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving various speeds, the vehicle lost power and misfired, and smoke could be seen coming from the rear of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who initially diagnosed a fuel leak from the exhaust. upon further investigation, the mechanic stated that injector number 7 was not closing correctly and causing the fuel to enter the cylinder. as a result, the motor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the dealer stated that the vin was excluded from a recall on the injectors. the recall details were not provided. the failure mileage was approximately 76,000.
I needed a new transmission last year. just blew out of no where. this year alone i needed new hubs, all8 cylinders have a miss fire my truck dropped from 60 to ten in seconds so scary
I am the second owner of my 2005 ford f-150 xlt 5.4l 3v 4x4 crew cab (vin# available on request) and there is a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. i can hear the noise while idling in drive, idling in reverse, idling in neutral, idling in park and traveling under low throttle and/or power in any gear(it is especially loud when the echoes bounce off of a hard-sided building, such as a drive-through restaurant). the events leading to my breakdown on a busy acceleration ramp are as follows: my vehicle lost almost all power on an acceleration ramp, slowing me down to a crawl. it also caused massive oil leaking from the engine compartment, which resulted in road spillage, causing unsafe driving conditions for me and the people around me. i've done some independent research and have personally had this issue fixed once. i've had it fixed at a mechanic, the resulting repair costs ended up being ~$3500. full diagnostic and repair receipt is available upon request, but the main issues were the cam phaser, and timing chain. i have seen multiple upon multiple complaints about this issue, and i am formally requesting the nhsta to investigate and hold the ford motor company (hereafter referred to as "ford") responsible for this poor design choice. i would like to see a recall for every ford f-150 reported with this issue, as well as reimbursement for any documented repairs conducted by mechanics from ford. this may be an outlandish request that may not even be in the nhsta's cumulative power, but, as a taxpayer, a working man, and most importantly, a husband, i would like to see action taken by the people i put my faith in, to rectify this situation. thank you for your time, and good day.
Bought the truck used at 150000 miles. after 5000 miles the loud ticking that these trucks are known for became louder. at 161000 miles the engine died. i started it up in my driveway one morning and instead of just ticking, it was knocking 100x louder. the truck began shaking violently. then it just died. all this happened in a matter of minutes. had it towed to a shop, and they said i need a whole new engine. i can't help but think if i was driving and this happened, what the outcome would be. i have read hundreds of complaints from people online saying similar things. ford is aware of the problem, but no recall was issued. that is irresponsible, and very dangerous on ford's part.
#8 cylinder spark plug blew out while driving. replaced all spark plugs and torqued. four days later #8 plug blew out again while driving.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving various speeds or while the vehicle was parked, a loud noise could be heard coming from the engine. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed with a cam phaser issue. the contact stated that the cam phaser, solenoid, and tensioner needed replacement. the vehicle was repaired, but the issue persisted with an even louder noise. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was approximately 88,000.
5.4 3v triton. when the truck is at idle at a normal operating temp, it has a horrible knocking noise on the passenger side of the engine. from what i am reading this engine has major problems with the cam phasers and timing components. it sounds like the timing chain is about to fly out of the engine. i hope my truck doesn't give out on me because this is my only transportation to work and cannot afford to have it fixed. i bought a ford for reliability, but until this is fixed i feel it's unreliable. i have used a full syn oil and the right motorcraft 820s filter. this is a major problem and ford needs to pay for this and everyone else who has had this problem over and over! recall this ford!
While driving 75 on a toll road the engine went into engine fail safe mode, i lost all power and almost wrecked into oncoming traffic trying to get to the shoulder, i went to a mechanic and they replaced the throttle body, 3 days later same thing, i was told this is a common problem on this motor 5.4, why is there not a recall on this ??
Truck began ticking very loudly, then began a knocking noise, and now the engine shakes the truck when idling. cam phasers broke apart causing damage to the timing chain. sudden loss of power to the engine as well as inability to maintain speed while ascending an incline is frequent. the loss of speed and power has caused us several close-call accidents. truck will simply not accelerate while pressing the gas pedal. additionally, it also feels like the truck cannot catch gears while in motion.
Truck was bought and i replaced all spark plugs and even had to replace a clinoid because was told that was the problem. its not... there is a ball valve in the transmission that keeps the truck from building enough pressure to be able to shift which throws a code and says misfire on 6 been replaced twice now so clearly not the problem. this is a major issue.. truck feels as if fixing to fie then check engine light will come on start flashing but throw no codes and you cant speed back up because it feels like your truck is about to die and you don't want to blow your motor.
I was driving through the country, and something felt odd. at approximately 45 mph, the truck started to shake, (more than normal) and was then vanish after 55 mph. after the next few days, the shaking got worse. my first thought, "i have a misfire on one of my cylinders". on my way home from work my truck through a check engine light. i then proceeded to take it to my dealer because at this point it would barely go over 40 mph. they checked the code and turns out that the truck has a number of problems; that what i have seen on this website are a very common issue with this year and engine type (5.4l v8 tritton). i need new vct solenoids, new camphasers, timing adjustments, and new cam shaft position sensors. to make a long story short, the common problem that happens to this engine, happened yet again. bad cam phasers. happened around 138,4xx miles. not sure if any previous owner replaced this part before or not. but, it seems even if replaced, the problem will still persist in the future. this is in need of recall.
Purchased my vehicle used at the dealership with 85,000. which is typically a good break-in point for a truck. well after having the vehicle home for less than a month i've noticed a ticking in the engine. a ticking that i knew little about until further research into these vehicles. seems that along with thousands of other people in the world i've purchased a ford lemon. the engines rarely make it past 75,000-100,000. ford as a whole are aware of this issue and deliberately find ways around having to take the liability on. the only solution to the ticking is 1,500 in repairs of the cam phaser, which in a timely manner melts like butter or replace it with a remanufactured engine only to encounter the same issue. whether or not this vehicle is over 10 years old this is an issue that needs to be addressed. an engine should be able to last more than 100,000 miles. i have driven this vehicle less than 500 miles and the problem is evident.
My truck has a known issue with the 5.4l's cam phasers. the truck makes a very loud noise and shakes. to repair this, it's around $3,000 and also i have a known issue with all 8 coils which had to be replaced for $1,200 and a known misfire. i do not understand why ford motor is aware of the ongoing issues in this year truck and has not done anything about it. also if the cam phasers are not replaced the engine will blow!
Brake booster vacuum supply metal stand pipe ruptured. this was while driving. loss of vacuum and loss of engine performance and brakes were sluggish. have to push all way to floor.
Known issue with fuel injectors caused premature engine failure at 45k mi. too much fuel when compressed and ignited blew the piston apart. ford replaced engine. 80k miles later similar problems and recommendation is another engine. two 5.4l engines with less than 130k overall miles is absolutely unacceptable. web searches say there is current litigation in progress over these 5.4l engines. i'm making a formal complaint that the basis of the lawsuit has merit. ford has already settled a suit over the spark plugs for these 5.4l but the problems with these engines goes much deeper. i'm thankful my engine failures happened without any additional incident.
The phasers and tuners are shot internal engine damage it started to make noise while moving
I purchased my 2005 f150 with a 5.4l trinitron engine new in 2005. i completed all regular scheduled maintenance using the recommended products, most of it done in ford dealerships. this 5.4l engine is a poor design and should be recalled. it has numerous problems. i had a safety inspection done at a ford dealership and it passed even though it had a ticking sound in the engine and i had hesitation and loss of power. at that point, i had already replaced the transmission at 62,000 miles! now at 105,000 miles the plastic camphasers broke apart, the timing chain broke and the engine is blown!! that is unacceptable for a ford truck to last that long and have that many problems. this engine is a piece of junk! ford needs to stand behind its' "built ford tough" trucks and make this right. i'll never buy another ford.
F-150 began with a ticking noise and turned into a loud knocking noise, vehicle looses power or completely shuts off while driving. replaced coil packs, and spark plugs (one broke off due to horrible design). basically, had to take apart the entire engine replacing several parts to still not have a drivable vehicle. mechanic just informed me there is nothing else to do but replace the entire engine. thank you ford i owe about $8000 on this pos. i have already sunk $1200 into the vehicle and will now be looking at over $5000 to replace the engine. *tr
I drive a 2005 5.4 triton and after 110000 miles the engine has died. the mechanic states its the cam phaser and i've seen several websites complaining the same issue.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving at 70 mph, the vehicle shook. while making a right turn into a parking lot, the vehicle crashed into a median and a curb. the contact sustained injuries to the shoulder, neck, and back, which required medical attention. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. no police report was filed. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 93,000.
The truck has a ticking sound inside the engine. i have had that noise since i bough it. 3 years ago i had it checked out at a ford dealership and they said it was normal. this year on november 4, i took it again to the ford dealership and they found the problem. its a bent rod. the problem is that the extended warranty that i have will not cover itunless the know the cause of it. so ford is saying its a defected part. insurance wont cover it and they want me to pay thousands of dollars to repair it!! if its a defected part, don't you think ford should pay!!
Spark plugs are impossible to be removed/replaced. went to mechanic to be removed/replaced and was extremely expensive. must be some defect on ford's part.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle shook and stalled. the contact restarted the vehicle and was able to drive. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the oil pump was not supplying oil to the top of the engine and the engine would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 106,200. updated 1/12/16 *cn
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving, there was an abnormal noise coming from the engine area and the check engine warning light illuminated. the contact also indicated that while idle, the vehicle would shake and rattle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine solenoid failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 140,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving at approximately 55 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle lunged forward without warning. the contact stated that when the vehicle was idle, there was a ticking noise coming from the front of the vehicle. the failures recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the vehicle consumed excessive oil at an accelerated rate and the vehicle needed an oil change. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 144,500.
I purchased my 2005 f150 with a 5.4l trinitron engine used in 2010. i completed all regular scheduled maintenance using the recommended products, most of it done in ford dealerships. this 5.4l engine is a poor design and should be recalled. it has numerous problems. i had a safety inspection done at a ford dealership and it passed even though it had a ticking sound in the engine and i had hesitation and loss of power. replace spark plugs, i had already replaced the transmission at 98,000 miles! this engine is a piece of junk! ford needs to stand behind its' "built ford tough" trucks and make this right. i cant enjoy my truck!!!
I purchased my 2005 ford f-150 right out of the show in 2005 and first began have jerking issues 6 month later a mechanic then told me that it was related to the fuel injectors. since that time i had to replace the transmission twice in 2008, a timing chain and bent rods in 2014 and currently another timing bent rods and debri from the oil pan. all caused from the initial faulty fuel injector issues continuing from less than one year after the original purchase in 2005. i've sent over $9500 in mechanic cost to date.
Driving on interstate doing 70 mph (in fast lane) when truck stopped/stalled and i guess from research went into "limp mode". i was unable to press the gas pedal, it just shook three times each of which slowed it down incredibly, the check engine light was on and a wrench showed up, but the radio still worked. while trying to pull over almost wrecked (memorial day weekend and i was in fast lane). finally able to pull over to side of road hysterical, shut off and waited a minute and it started. drove rest of way home *100 miles* with check engine light on and abs light on. i am scared to death to drive again. not fun having a vehicle stall/quit whatever on interstate in rush hour traffic.
Upon starting my car that morning it backfired and white smoke exited from the exhaust which it has never done before. once idling i put the truck in reverse with my foot on the brake and my truck rolled down the driveway. i had to depress my brakes with significant force to get it to stop. upon checking the engine later there is no vacuum detected at the power brake assist. there is a recall on other ford trucks of this year and model with the same issues that mine was exhibiting. upon calling ford they said that my vin # was not associated with this recall. go figure! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving the vehicle at 65 mph, the vehicle began stalling intimittently then the engine and maintanenence warning light illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to a mechanic where it was diagnosed that the air filter was outdated and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 108,000.

We have had our 2005 f-150 king ranch for about 10 years now. today (feb 10,2015), my wife and our one year babe were heading to the post office the truck displayed a message reading "engine failsafe mode". the truck lost all power, no steering, and it stall on the highway going about 65 mph. luckily, she said there were vehicles behind her and she pulled it over with no steering and the engine dead. my wife then sat on the highway for about 10 minutes and tried to start the vehicle, which started and there were no "engine failsafe mode" on display anymore. know with-in the last year our truck has had the check engine light and the abs light has come on and off every other month. i have checked the fuses and had replace a few but at time it is not the fuse. i've had the interior dim in and out and at times it does not work at all. by reading the f150.net forum found out the a wire that splits into two wires was corroded on the passenger side floor board, it seems that condensation or water come in and stays in that pocket were that wiring harness goes thru. i am now terrified that truck will shut off on the highway again with my family and i in it. this seems to be a life threatening problem. i have read thru some forums and it seems that people have called the ford dealership and the service department claimed they have never heard of this problem, but can work on it if they bring it in. but that ford claim that they fix the problem and the people says that the problem still exist. hope some one can help or assist us in fixing this issue not just for our family but for others too. sincerely [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Spark plug blew out of head. *tr
I own the above mention vehicle, there was no disclosure to me at the time of purchase of a very serious design flaw with the spark plugs that could and likely will break off in the engine during replacement and the extreme cost in changing these plugs around 900 to 1000 dollars if no plugs break off and even more in the plugs do break off or heads have to removed to extract the plugs even worse pieces of prshell could fall into the engine cylinder and cause engine damage to around 8000 dollars now that i aware of the extreme cost 3 or 4 times the amount for routine maintenance of changing spark plugs in these ford vehicles ford is no help at all saying its not a safety issue i cant help it the design flaw with these long 2 piece plugs is so serious and the price gouging of the consumer for the cost to change spark plugs is so expensive and so bad i strongly feel that the federal gov should step into the matter and help the consumers out and not allow ford to get by with this extreme bad design flaw and the outrageous cost they are charging and the fed gov should force ford to recall all affected vehicles and mandate that ford eat the cost of changing these spark plugs and put in the newly developed plugs that are not prone to become seized to the engine and ford shall do so at no cost to the consumer safety or not it is just unbelievable they can get by with such a serious design flaw with such a high expense to the consumer for something that is supposed to be routine. *tr
