Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. while driving approximately 60 mph, the engine stalled and the engine failure system warning light illuminated. the vehicle was restarted after multiple attempts. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 103,000.

Bought a 2005 f150 triton v8 5.4l new in 2005. i have now experienced a cam phase problem which will cost appx 2500 to repair. talking to my mechanic he said that it was no promise to fix the issue , because these motors are known for this issue. was told it would be easier to put another motor in so i wouldn't have to worry about ,if it would fix the problem. my brother has a 2008 ford with the same motor and had the same problem ,but his motor after having the cam phaser's replaced blew up and had to replace the motor. after researching and talking to several ase qualified mechanics they all said that there's an issue with the 5.4 liter triton motor. upon calling ford motor company as i well figured would happen they said that they wouldn't help with the cost and that there was nor recall. consumers should be able to get more than 100,000 miles out of a vehicle they buy. if ford wants to keep customers happy they should address theproblem and the government should be more vigilant in assuring the consumer is protected from companies whose product dosen't meet standards. i would like to see the government to look at all complaints through a survey on this motor to find a solution for the consumer. *tr

Over the past 5 years i have had my truck go into fail safe mode. my truck will flash fail safe and i will lose all power to the vehicle. i'm able to coast to a stop. i have been able to re start my vehicle and continue driving. *tr

The 5.4 liter engines have a design problem that's costing owners a lot of money just to replace the spark plugs. the plugs are twisting off or breaking because the block design allows the plug to extend into a hole that allows carbon buildup around the tip of the plug. when you try to remove the spark plug the bottom of the plug is sealed tight to the head therefore allowing the top of the plug to twist and not the bottom. this is happening to a lot of truck owners and some dealers won't even attempt to replace the plugs. if one breaks, it could cost up to $2000 for the repairs. i have 4 of them broke off. i have ordered the extractor kit but the back two cylinders are going to be hard to repair. i like my ford truck but since the earlier model fords were blowing plugs out of the blocks and now we can't get them out without an extractor, to me this is not good engineering. i would like to know what ford is doing about this extreme cost to its customers. thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

We bought this vehicle new in 2005. change oil as required and did regular services. engine started knocking and running rough. took to dealer who stated cam phasers went out which in turn blew the engine. dealer states new engine is required on a 9-year old vehicle with less then 140,000. dealer states cam phasers are very common problem in this engine (5.4l trinitron) . calls to numerous other local ford dealers reveal numerous engine repairs due to cam phasers in the engine internet research find numerous issues with the cam phasers in this engine causing complete engine failure. ford refuses to acknowledge the problem. dealer quote to replace the engine on a 9-year old vehicle was $7150.00. *tr

The vehicle began to smell like raw fuel, particularly at stop signs or intersections. the smell appeared to be coming from the engine bay. upon disassembly of the intake components of the engine to expose the fuel injection system, it was evident that the fuel rail had begun leaking raw fuel inside the engine bay. the fuel rail developed a speck of corrosion about 2-3mm in diameter on the top surface of the rail. the corrosion evidently penetrated the entire rail and became a pinhole leak. raw fuel was seen leaking up and out of the pinhole. this happened on the passenger side fuel rail, which is positioned inches away from the high voltage coil pack, and above the exhaust manifold as well. called ford customer service hotline and was told there is no recall for it, no extended warranty program, no assistance whatsoever. ordered a new fuel rail through local ford dealer for $500 dollars (4 times what a typical fuel rail costs); part has not been shipped, dealer unsure if ford has any in stock or is even making the part. truck has been inoperable for over a week with no way to fix it. *tr

The number 3 spark plug blew loose. the first time it happened it was just started and idling. it got fixed with a repair kit and then it happened again the next week. it wouldn't be a huge concern but there are multiple things that could happen and cause serious injury and or a fatality. *tr

At 58,000 miles engine malfunction due to a broken valve spring. at 101,879 mile started to make a loud rattling at startup and subsided until the engine was warmed up. this continued until i reached 273,000 miles and the engine just stopped due to oil starvation and cam phaser failures. oil was changed as required through out ownership. *tr

Truck went into "limp" mode on start up. very difficult to get home in traffic. "fix" was new throttle body from flecther ford. $582.38. seems to be an ongoing problem with ford. *tr

Exhaust manifold on the fords' 5.4l engine apparently were not engineered correctly. i have heard of many that have leaked and had to be replaced. i worry about the possibility of fire. i have contacted ford motor co. multiple times however they declined any help with there replacement on my truck. it seems to be a very common problem from what i've heard and see online. should ford have a recall on these manifolds? *tr

Front end collision into the rear of another truck. whole front end damaged through radiator, hood, headlights, bumpers etc. airbag never deployed and upon return of vehicle after repairs, i am now getting a code 42 that the sensor is bad and after research find out there is a recall on this but for the opposite reason but also now understand there are corrosion issues with the connection of the sensor also. hope this helps. please advise what to do, will ford fix this whole problem and replace with a new sensor and the wire chaffing problem? thank you in advance! *tr

2005 ford f-150. consumer writes in regards to engine fail safe mode malfunctions causes vehicle to lose all power, brakes and steering. consumer has different vehicle complaint in artemis. *smd the dealer investigated the complaint, but was unable to identify the cause. *jb

5.4l truck always maintained and serviced at ford dealerships. it was running perfect until it immediately began idling rough at a stop. no check engine light, we just know our truck. took it in for a tune-up (replaced spark plugs, etc.) and oil change. perfect bill of health - couldn't replicate problem. engine checked out diagnostically- perfect. they suggested it could be an intermittent sticking fuel injector, so we were going to get an additive to add to the fuel tank. didn't make it that far. drove it home - 35 miles - got home and engine stalled in driveway. turned back on, engine died again. long story short - towed it back to ford - they were able to replicate the problem - oil pressure drops suddenly (intermittently)- pointing to cam phaser, timing area of engine - end result - need new engine - this one is shot at only 68k miles - estimated cost $7,400 plus tax. extended warranty expired. did some internet research, appears to be a common problem. these 5.4l engines are breaking down left and right in these trucks. don't know what changed. had a 1999 expedition with a 5.4l - great vehicle. contacted ford customer care - was told to keep all receipts in the event of a recall. an engine should not blow at 68k miles, especially a built ford tough engine. we've owned fords since high school and they used to be reliable, long driving vehicles. *tr

On highway at 60 mph engine started to miss. was able to get it to my mechanic where he said a spark plug had failed. the plug broke when removing. he was able to remove the plug. then due to a squeal under the hood when the engine was cold, he removed the intake and found the seal had failed, while it was apart he noted 2 leaking fuel injectors. all defective parts were replaced. in august that same year i replaced the other 7 sparkplugs, having 4 more brake off. the extractor tool worked great.

I bought a 2005 ford f 150 used not knowing about the engine and rear end problems until i heard the rattle coming from under the hood so i go ask dealer about this problem he said this type engine was from ford was not good lucky for me they were repairing one it had blown a spark plug out and they were replace parts for the cam he said get rid of the truck or run it till it blows up it has no power it stalls in the most bad places i am afraid i am going to have a wreck and hurt some one ford needs to recall these engine and fix the rear end problem also i don't have 5 to 8 grand to fix it. *tr

I had just changed the oil and checked the fluids and had to run some errands up town about a mile and a half up the road the engine started making a knocking noise, i was close enough to the garage i use so i pulled in there to see what was going on the oil pan was on fire oil and what looked like anti freeze was coming out of a hole from what use to be the oil pan or what was left of the pan, the fellow that ran the station told me it had hydro locked and bent a rod and pushed it thru the oil pan, he went on to say he had seen several of the 4.2 do this and it looked like ford would have done something when they were aware of the problems with the 4.2,i talked to ford about it and got the run around from them, just couldn't believe it i had never pulled or hauled any heavy objects or mistreated it in any way, don't understand when the powers that be were aware of the problem with this engine the consumer was left holding the bag to a tune of thousands of dollars in repairs, now got to do with out to try and save the money to get it fixed, mostly used the truck to get my wife back and forth to the dr. she has m/s and a heart condition, the poor always catch it if there was anything to ford they would make it good and the same goes for the nhtsa they know the problem is there just look at the ford forms, but god always makes a way just have to wait and see what his plan are, alot of folks like us have no family so we take care of or trucks, it sure wasn't abuse that cause the problem. *tr

I purchases a used 2005 ford f150 about 5 months ago. today, feb 28, 2014, i was leaving my neighborhood and my trucks display flashed an message reading "engine failsafe mode". my truck lost all power, no steering and died. luckily i was on surface streets and pulled it over with no power steering and engine dead. the mechanics cannot find the cause and the engine will start but continues to turn off and the vehicle's computer shuts down. online i read of this happening on the freeway at 65 mph. iam now terrified that my truck will shut off on the freeway with my children in the truck with me. this seems to be a life threatening problem. i called a ford dealership and the service dept claimed they never heard of this but can work on it if i bring it in. what is my recourse? thank you. *tr

I was driving to town when engine started making a sound like a large compressor, stopped truck, could feel air coming from the top of the head by intake manifold, took to a garage where i was informed that the plug came out of the #2 cylinder and busted the coil pak. i know this has happened to many f150 truck owners, i know of 3 locally, and have found many more complaints with the same problem. ford should recall, this problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would shake and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 85,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while idling at a light, he heard a knocking noise from the engine. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the cam phasers and lifters needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000. the vin was unavailable.

This would be the second time a spark plug has popped out of the engine on my 2005 ford f-150 with the 4.6 liter v8 engine it. the first spark plug popped out in august 2011 and now it has happened again in september 2013. i have heard that i am not the only person this is happened to. this seems to be a recurring problem in not only the 4.6 liter v-8 but the 5.4 liter v-8 and the 6.8 liter v-10. with this problem happening over and over again why hasn't ford done anything about it. fordproblems.com suggests that ford insists the problem is due to improper torquing of new plugs or any number of other reasons. however many people have had the original factory spark plugs eject from the engine, which indicates there is a defect with the engine & cylinder head design. the repair is relatively easy - do not be fooled by a dealer offering to repair the issue for $700 or more. an inexpensive helicoil kit will do the trick. also, we do not recommend simply re-tapping the spark plug threads because the threads are probably too damaged already & the spark plug may just blow out again causing more damage. spark plug ejection is dangerous because fuel vapor starts coming out the spark plug hole, which is clearly a serious safety issue. the fuel vapor can be ignited by the loose spark plug and in fact there have been a small number of cases reported of engine fires due to spark plug ejection/blowout. i as well as other ford owners would like the nhtsa to look into and force a recall order to ford motor company to get these issue fixed, repair, and remembers all affected by this issue. *tr

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road to restart it. once restarted, the vehicle functioned properly. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection but they could not determine the cause of failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure but was unable to provide a remedy. the failure mileage was 88,000. ap

I took my vehicle in for a service engine light issue. i was told i need new spark plugs. the issue is hundreds of 2004 -2008 ford f-150 5.4 liter engine have faulty spark plugs that break off in the head creating additional expense. the prices are between 500- 1000 to change out spark plugs. the faulty design of the plugs created this issue and ford had not addressed this problem. please, research this issue and help consumers with this problem. lisle designed a tool to extract the broken plugs model # 65600 it is for the years 2004-2008 ford 5.4 liter engines. many dealers are aware of this problem and just charge additional monies to the customer because of faulity part design. please, help. *tr

I was traveling south coming to a intersection when a vehicle traveling north and decided to turn and hit me! he was travel 50 mph. the driver received 2 tickets at crash site also 1 ticket 3 minute before crash. i almost drove 1/3 into his car. no air bag went off in my vehicle. my hips have been hurting ever since crash. allstate forced me to settle them. i believe if airbag went off my hips would be fine! x-rays show them 1" out of aliment and i need to continually see a chiropractor *tr

2005ford f-150 4.6 triton v8 spark plug ejected blowing out coil while driving. this resulting in a stripped head and needing to replace the engine. with research on the web seems this is a common problem with this model engine with many complaints that ford will not acknowledge. *tr

Spark plug blew out of head. called ford no recall. can see why so many suv, trucks, ect. have this problem. ford should have paid. went truck shopping got a new dodge. *tr

Bought this ford f150 used with 95,000 miles. i was told the plugs and fuel filter needed replaced by the 100,000 range. my local garage spent hours replacing one plug and when they checked with the local ford dealer about the problem they were told it was a long on going problem. the dealer said, they could remove the plugs but it would be $500.00 dollars to start and if the plugs broke off in the heads the cost could be as much as $3,000.00 if they had to remove the heads. research shows me this has been going on for ever and ford refuses to repair or recall the f150 5.4 3v spark plug problem. build up around the base of the plugs from poor head design is costing us consumers thousands. people are getting hurt just trying to remove these plugs. i feel ford should recall the f150 with this engine and repair or replace the engine heads with a plug that can be replaced at a fair price not this stupid thousands people are spending. *tr

After the truck passed 76000 i started to notice a tick/knock in the engine. i brought it to ford and they told me this was normal noise for these engines, to me this was no normal. now the tick/knock/rattle has become worse and i have been told by ford i would need a new engine. this is a very very common situation with the 2004-2008 5.4l 3v engines. what us ford owners would like is a recall on the cam phasers and vct solenoids. ford has redesigned both of these parts so they know this was causing big issues with owners of the mentioned make/model/year fords. i do not know how a company, an american company, can get away with selling vehicles where the internal parts of the engine, and american made engine, go faulty before the odometer hit's 100,000 miles. there are normal wear and tear replaceable parts on every car, but when internal engine components fail with a vehicle that is just 7 years old that is not acceptable! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was a loud knocking sound coming from the motor. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 215,000. updated 1/14/14*cn

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, a loud noise emitted outside of the vehicle. the contact maneuvered to the side of the road and then resumed driving. the vehicle was inspected upon arriving to the residence. the contact detected the number seven spark plug dislodged from the engine cylinder head. the dealer was contact who informed him that there was no recalls pertaining to the defect. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

This 5.4 liter v8 motor required replacement of spark plugs (check engine message flashed on the dashboard). the spark plugs had welded themselves to the engine head, ultimately requiring the removel of the engine head to extract spark plug-cost $2,000 in additional cost to consumer. internet is full of similar reports. mechanics at ford dealership and midas report frequent encounter with this issue with similar result. i have contacted ford and they claim no liability, stating nhtsa hasn't required them to do a recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle was being examined for routine maintenance when he was informed that four spark plugs were fractured. the contact also stated that the spark plugs were supposed to last for approximately 100,000 miles before being replaced. the dealer stated that a carbon build up on the tips of the plugs caused the failure. the failure and current mileages were 81,000.

I was driving on a residential street (gray st. )approaching a busy two lane street that was one way heading south (armenia avenue) in tampa, florida. as i was approaching the stop sign, my foot was on the brake. preparing to stop, but instead of stopping the engine revved and accelerated into the lanes of traffic traveling south. i was standing on the brake so hard that my leg was shaking when i finally stopped. i stopped the vehicle by depressing the emergency brake and the rpm's finally came down and the engine returned to normal. i was so nervous because if there had been cars coming i would have been hit on the driver's side. the street is usually very heavy with traffic. i was very lucky that there was no one close or i may not be writing this today. a few days later i came to the same corner and a bicyclist crossed right in front of me. if this had happened on april 12th, i would have run over the bicyclist. i drove around the block very slowly continuing to stop and rpm's were normal. i really thought everyone would think i was crazy for what had just happened. when the ford dealership found the problem on the computer i was relieved to know that there was a problem that could be fixed. it was the throttle body. a month later our other ford f-150, a 2007, had the same problem and this time my husband was driving it. there was a report on this vehicle also. ford is not recognizing that there is a problem and other vehicles are being brought in for the same issues which could result in serious injury or fatalities to innocent parties due to some defect in the throttle body's on the f-150's. my report number on our 2007 f-150 is 10459967. *tr

On three separate occasions, my ford 2005 f150 king ranch supercrew 4x4 engine suddenly died while driving at approximately 55-60mph. on all three occasions, i fortunately was able to pull over to the side of the road with the engine died and no power steering. if i had not been in the right hand lane and able to pull off of the road, then an rear engine collision would more than likely occurred if i would have been in an outer lane of a multiple lane highway. after the third occasion this past week, i took the vehicle to the ford dealership in rockwall, texas where it cost me $700.00 to have throttle body/motor assembly replaced. my obd readings at home were p2104 and p2112. if not already, this issue is a fatally waiting to happen. lots of chatter on internet of similar issues. *tr

Engine started ticking ended up being cam phasers and needed new motor ford knows its a well known problem but refuses to stand behind their products.was told it was normal engine wear which i find hard to believe at 100,000miles with recommended maintenance done to vehicle class action lawsuit would be the best for all involved when it comes to this product 7000 dollars to replace motor.

When you accelerate at 40 to 50mph the engine struggles to pick up speed like it is not getting fuel. it has also stalled several times at various speeds causing me to put it in neutral while still rolling,or come to a stop, turn the key completely off and then restart.took the vehicle to the ford dealer and to be told it was the cam phasers which will cost about $2,900.00 to fix were the problem. he also said the worst decision ford ever made was using the 5.4 triton v8 from 2005-2008. you would think if a manager of a ford mechanic shop tells you this, i am not the only one having this problem. it also has a constant ticking noise in the engine which i was told is the tensioner for the timing chain. the truck currently has 138,000 miles. *tr

While at idle my engine started to tick,so i took it to the mechanic and he told me i had a bad lash adjuster, and it was very common for this to happen with the 5,4l 3valve engine,so i went online to see if i could find any info about my issue and it seams that thousand of people are having the same issue, and how ford will not recall the motors for repair of a major defect to that type of engine, the mechanic told me to drive it until it dies, because the cost will be the same to repair or replace the engine,powertrain.com sells the upgraded engine which corrects the three major issues with this engine, which are, lash adjusters, cam phasers, and the spark plug treads stripping out of the heads, why has ford been able to hide this for so long. *tr

2005 f150 goes into "fail safe mode" and shuts down while driving. it only occurred once per year starting at 65,000 miles, but now happens every 3-4 weeks at 114,000 miles. once the engine shuts down, i put the transmission into neutral while coasting and it restarts easily. the engine light illuminates for 3-4 days and then turns off. in researching the issue, it seems to be a rather common problem with this vehicle and is usually caused by a faulty throttle body. ford states that they are aware of the problem. *tr

There is a obvious problem with the manifolds on this truck. my truck is an fx4 and rarely seen any off roading. my manifolds are cracked and the truck has been babied this results in a very annoying noise. also the transmission had be replaced at 30,000 miles under warranty, the new one is still slipping. *tr

The 5.4l engine installed in the ford f150 has nothing but a bad reputation for costing consumers thousands and never being able to fully fix the issue without replacing the entire engine. the vehicle cuts out of power, shakes vigorously, misfires and is dangerous on highways, hills, or any roadway for that matter. our personal experience almost got us rear ended by a semi truck with our children in the vehicle because we could not get it to move without losing power and shaking and jerking! there have been several thousand complaints filed on this engine i'm sure, judging by the forums, websites, car complaint sites etc. meanwhile, we took our truck into a ford dealership and were told that they get hundreds of people who bring these vehicles in and spend thousands to replace the cam phasers just to have the same issue the next month! by the time you are able to fix the problem you've put out more money than the vehicle is worth at that point! get these engines recalled and get them off the roads. they're unsafe for drivers, families and others on the roadways! *tr

Truck shakes vigorously at speeds over 55mph, cannot excel in fast oncoming traffic with children in vehicle! engine cuts out and jerks the whole vehicle. misfiring. continuously having to get towing because the vehicle fails to start all together! this could lead to injury, death, accidents not only for the driver/passengers but others on the roads as well. this issue has been brought to attention in the ford f-150 5.4l engine more than several hundred times and no action has been taken. you can find information all over of people having the same issues, the ford dealership i took it to told me i would need a new engine or to spend thousands to fix it and they see people back in there within the month of spending grands to fix it. something needs done about this before people end up dying in these vehicles. *tr
