Problems with 2004 Ford F-150 LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES

On average, the 2004 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES and its various aspects after 72 155 miles.

Recently reported LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES problems on 2004 Ford F-150

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford f-150. according to the vehicle owner's manual, the ignition key had to be used to open a lock in the rear of the vehicle to access the spare tire. the contact discovered that the lock was rotted out and needed to be replaced. the dealer (betten baker ford in ludington, michigan) diagnosed that the lock to the spare tire was corroded and a special tool needed to be used to remove the cylinder. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was invalid. the approximate failure mileage was 73,000.

My 16yr old son was driving down the highway at around 60mph when the drivers side window just fell down into the door almost causing him to crash into oncoming traffic. *tr

Automatic transmission shift cable is routed too close to the engine causing the cable cover to melt over time allowing the cable to become loose. this prevents the column shifter from transferring the vehicle into park even though the dashboard indicator is in the park position. *tr

2004 ford f-150 crew cab lariat. driving in rainstorm, the power window regulator fails and the window comes crashing down. this is the 3rd of 4 windows that has fell down for no reason in a 18 mo. period. the shock and surprise has caused me to lose control and run into a fence. had this been on a freeway it could be worse. *tr

My ford f150 2004 power window regulator broke while i was driving. not only did it scare me because of slamming down so hard, it made me swerve off the road. thank god i got safely over, but was so shaken i had to wait before proceeding. it was l09 degrees that day and had to drive with the window broken and down. i know many people have had this problem with this model and year, why haven't you done anything about this. it is a safety issue that needs to be addressed to all consumers who own or going to own this auto. i can't afford to fix it now, they want nearly 400.00. i am so afraid my truck is going to get stolen, but what can i do? i also worry that when i park my truck in a public parking area, that someone may easily take my truck with me in it!!!!!!!!! *tr

I have a ford f150 5.4 triton, and the window regulator cable broke dropping the window into the door on the drivers side with no way to get the window back up without a new part. *tr

Second window drive failure in 6 weeks. very loud bang from door (sounds like truck is hit by large rock/hard object) which is very startling, then window glass slides down into door. on the freeway this is extremely distracting and dangerous. the first window failure (one month ago) cost me $430.00 at ford dealer to repair. i was never informed that this was a frequent problem. after second failure in 4 weeks, i went on the web and discovered that this is happening to thousands of 2004-2005 f-150's, and ford refuses to address it! i'm waiting to talk to dealers service manager about second failure to try and get ford to pay for the repairs, as well as inspect the other windows and repair them as necessary. it's only a matter of time before they fail as well. - this is a well-known design defect!!! ford has already changed the design/part # for the faulty part (regulator/cable assy) three times- and it still fails without warning! these trucks should be recalled and fixed at ford's expense!!!! *tr

No access to spare tire: 2004 ford f-150 "heritage" (2003 body style) spare stored under truck bed lowers using "key" and winch.the winch and key are supposed to engage via a "star shaped" indentation. if this does not engage one cannot lower the spare tire for use. the replacement (ford refuses to pay for)comes re-designed so that one actually inserts the lowering rod into the winch.there is no "star" to strip out or be worn down. with a flat tire on a busy road and one under the truck trying to access a spare tire constitutes a life threatening situation. ford has sold the re-design as a replacement and this in itself is an admission of a defective product design. dealership informed me that they simply cut the tire free and replace the winch at customer cost. *tr

I was driving when i heard a loud pop! at that point my driver side window rolled down and couldn't be rolled back up. ford said they would look at it for 200.00 and that was just to look at it. i tore into it myself and found the window regulator to be broken. ford wants to charge me 198.00 for the whole assembly. this i believe to be rediculous. also my passenger side window does not want to role up with the passenger side control so that is inopporative. one more thing my cruise control doesn't work half of the time. my major complaint though is the window regulator as this seems to be a major problem with ford components and even the ford mechanics i talk to say this is a big problem. *tr

2004 f-150 crew cab 4-door, 77,000 miles. in the last 2 weeks, starting october 20, 2008, i have had 3 windows fall into the doors of my truck. windows effected are the rf, rr and lr. the first was the rt front passenger window which fell in the door while traveling on the interstate at 70 mph, at night and during a heavy rain. when i attempted to crack the window for air circulation, i heard a loud bang and the window fell all the way into the door causing me to swerve and nearly miss a vehicle in the next lane. the failure also soaked the interior of the truck and many items in the front seat. i had to continue driving in the rain for several miles to a gas station for a plastic bag because the door panel had to be removed to get the window back up. the rt rear was next followed by the lt rear windows. each window failed with a loud bank and slid into the door while attempting to roll down the window. all 3 windows are being held in the up position by wedging screw drivers between the door and window. 3 windows in less than 2 weeks! the estimated cost for repair is 1500 dollars which i cannot afford. this poses not only a safety issue but also a security issue. judging from the frequency of complaints on these window assemblies, ford needs to take responsibility for replacing, through a recall, these faulty window assemblies. *tr

I have a 2004 f-150 4x4 4 door. the rear driver door does not open from the inside when unlocked from the inside door lock. it has power locks. sometimes if you open the door in one swift motion it will open. it will however open halfway, but then stops and you can't get out. i have informed the dealer when it was in on a window problem and they said it would not do it to them, but they made note. now it won't open if unlocked from the inside, but i have found that if you unlock it with the key pad the door opens most of the time. i have only found this problem from the inside you can open the door from the outside no matter where you unlock it from. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the driver side door will not unlock when trying to exit the vehicle. the dealer can not duplicate the problem.

Dt*: the contact stated as the third door on the vehicle was opened from the outside a child's finger was opening the door from the inside. as the pressure of the outside handle was applied the child's finger became lodged inside the interior handle and sustained a one inch cut to the finger. the laceration was completely to the bone and required immediate surgery. the manufacturer was contacted. *ak.....the contacted notified the dealer three times about the problem. however, dealer had not offered to put a different handle in the car. *ak

I was opening the back door of an extended cab, ford f150 2004, truck to get out of the back seat. another person was attempting to open the door for me using the outside handle. the handle caught my hand and severed my middle, ring, finger on my left hand. it cut through my fingernail and the bone. my finger was almost completely severed. it was sewn back on by an emergency room doctor. i've had to see an orthopedic doctor several times for pain and treatment. i am concerned that this door handle would do very severe damage to child's hand. it may severe several fingers of a child; this handle could severe a child's whole hand. *nm

Rear window seal is loose and window rattles inside of mounting area indicating an insufficient mount to retain window in mounting area. *nm

2004 ford f-150 supercab; the rear driver door can be in the 1/2 latched position and the front door can engage 100% and the open door light will go out, yet the doors are not fully secure. this was reported to dealer who stated that the vehicle was in specification; also reported to ford who stated to take the truck to dealer for inspection of this problem. *jb

On a ford f-150 super cab pickup, the problem is this.. it started with me driving down the highway and noticing that there was a windy noise. much like a window was partially lowered. what i finally discovered, was that the rear door was not completely latched in the full locked position. when i closed the driver door, it fully engaged the rear door and cleared the display light on the dash of an open-door indication, was non-the-less partially open. i have shown my dealer that i can do this, by just shutting the rear door as opposed to basically slamming it closed. then when the front door is closed, the open-door light goes out. incidentally, this same case is true for the passenger door side. i have come to make a special check through the mirrors, to see if there is a straight line along the door frame right at the base of the window. this tells me whether the door is fully closed. and i have found this on several occasions. *jb

Dear sir/madam i own a 2004 f150 super cab pickup truck with 4 doors, i am having a problem with the door ajar light. when the rear door is ajar the front door will latch to the rear door, which satisfies the door ajar safety light, but the front and rear door are not safely latched. i am a large man so my seat is as far back as it could go and the back is slightly reclined, when i get in and out of the vehicle my shoulder hits the rear door handle that protrudes into the drivers seat and at times will slightly open the door. i won't realize that i am driving with the door unsafely latched and have no idea that the door is ajar until i hit a bump large enough to rattle the door. my question is, is it safe to drive the vehicle with the front and rear doors ajar and in an ahead on collision will this area be compromised, thus would the crumple zone be affected drastically and would the stability of the vehicle be compromised? also is it safe in a side collision? i feel that this is a major safety concern and should be addressed immediately. i took the truck in for service at fullerton ford in somerville nj the said that ford said that this is normal and i called ford company they said this is normal and that i had no recourse with them. if i would have known that this was inherent to the f150 super cab i would not have purchased this model, i was told the f150 crew cab has this safety device installed thus the safety problem was addressed in this model but not the super cab. was this safety concern overlooked or knowingly omitted from the design? *jb

This vehicle was purchased new in this condition; on the supercab model of the f150, the rear driver door can be only partially engaged and with the front door latched, the door display light will be extinguished. this will leave the complete driver side door in a compromised condition. usually not known until driving under highway speed and hearing a wind whistle from the door not being completely closed. i had contacted ford motor co on december 10th of 2004, about this and their suggestion was to take it to original purchase dealer. however the dealer would not make any adjustments, simply telling me that i should make sure the rear door was secure in the full latched position. i even showed the same activity on another vehicle on the lot at that time. for reasons unknown, the passenger side will complete the closing of the rear door if left in the 1/2 latched position and the front door is closed. *jb

While driving on i-70 in missouri during a rain storm, i was the passenger in the 2000 f-150 that i own when we hydroplaned. while spinning through the median in a counter clockwise manner, my passenger door popped open. it was only by the grace of god, i wasn't killed, as i hung out the door only held in by my seatbelt. as the vehicle continued to spin around, the door slammed shut. we could not understand why that door would fly open. the force of the sudden opening damaged the hinge, door, and front fender. upon returning home to pennsylvania, i did some research and discovered others had similar problems. i contacted ford and they refused to accept any responsibility for the door coming open..."after researching your complaint, we have nothing indicating any known problems that could cause that to happen". i am now almost afraid to drive my truck. please please please force ford to recall these vehicles to prevent others from being hurt or killed by failures like this.

2004 - ford 150 - supercab when the rear doors are closed, unless they are closed very firmly, only the lower latch will engage. the doors appear to be closed and only if you pull on the upper portion will you see a small gap open by the roof line.*ak when the front doors are then closed they also appear to be secure and the "door ajar" indicator does not comes on. because the front door are secured by the back doors, only the lower latch is now holding both doors which i believe may be an unsafe design.

We recently purchased a 2004 ford f-150 super crew, my 5 year old daughter was getting into the back seat of the vehicle, and she put her hand into the door jam area where there is what looks like a "scissor" hinge. if the door is not all the way open and a finger gets caught in there the door if pushed open closes the hinge. my daughters top left middle finger was almost completely severed off. she was taken to a local hospital where she received stiches and was referred to a hand surgeon. this hinge should be looked at and possibly redesigned, the only way to remove her finger from the hinge was to close the door slightly. *la
