Problems with 2016 Ford Explorer UNKNOWN OR OTHER

On average, the 2016 Ford Explorer starts to “feel” problems with the UNKNOWN OR OTHER and its various aspects after 22 712 miles.

Recently reported UNKNOWN OR OTHER problems on 2016 Ford Explorer

Exhaust smell comes through ac system when ascending uphill at higher rpm. had in service shop before for this issue but it still exists. time for you guys to man up and make ford responsible for fixing their crap car.

The car had not yet had the customer satisfaction service for the plugs and seals completed. i had not noted any exhaust odors in the car and had not problems during many all day drives. after an 11 hr drive this week with the ac on the whole time (not on recirculating), i had many symptoms of co exposure (headache, dizzy, nausea) and all 3 of my dogs wer affected (poor appetite, lethargic). one out of the car i'm fresh air for several hours, the symptoms slowly dissipated. wish i had had a co meter in the car. i had milder symptoms on several trips (4-7hrs driving in one day) in the weeks before this longer trip. these were all highway driving and car did not idle while sitting.

Original hankook front tires were replaced at about 10k miles due to premature wear and chunk of tires peeling off. dealer stated that it was due to poor alignment. i paid for 2 new tires. ford eventually reimbursed us for one of them. now, 8k miles later the tires are just as bad as the ones that were replaced. the rear ones are almost smooth. hankook is aware of the problem and they have instructed the dealers to replace them with a different model yet my dealer will not do it.

I have been smelling a horrible odor that smells like natural gas/fumes in the car to the point it makes me sick and gives me headaches. i also have a 3 year old and can't have her in the car either. i took it into ford 2 different times and they have had it 2 weeks and still has not fixed it. it is heading back in again tomorrow. the first time we noticed the smell in the car, it was from cranking it up and just going flat down the road. also, while going up the hill it smells as well. no matter if it's flat or a hill, from cranking it or after driving a while, short distance or long distance, it smells like horrible fumes that make me sick.

It jolts, lunges, transmission doesn't engage and slams into gear hard it makes you feel you got rear ended with a big bank. slow to accelerate and when it finally does it lunges

We purchased our vehicle in may of 2017, and noticed weird smells. took it on a road trip and noticed them again in july. after the late july 2017 news release of co in ford explorers, we used co monitors and in fact, had co readings. it has been to the dealer approx 10 time and had the tsb service performed, but the problem still exists. i've had 3 different cases open with ford, and during the last case, they denied my "buyback" request. please help. photo attached and videos can be mailed in that show co levels and then show co levels going to zero when we roll down the window. we have had co problems for over a year now. please help because ford won't.

Both horns are dead.

Dash/speedometer went black - heat and air system inoperable - no turn signals - power decreased and power steering not fully functioning. all of this happened when i placed the car in park and realized the radio and interior lights were not automatically shutting off so i restarted the car and still nothing. dealership recommended disconnecting the battery - this did fix part of the problems but the synch health report is still not showing completlely clear and the check engine light came on then went off after driving a few miles . concerned if it is safe to drive especially if this is a possible electrical problem - car is just at 23k miles and also had to have throttle body replaced at aroud only 3k miles. not feling safe in the car at this point.

There has been a recall on the ford explorer due to exhaust leaking into the cabin. i took my car into the ford dealership to be repaired two months ago and was told everything was fixed. however, for the past few weeks i have noticed that the amount of exhaust in the cabin in the vehicle while driving continues to increase to the point that it is affecting my and my family's health. i have an appointment today to figure out if i have carbon monoxide poisoning from prolong exposure to these fumes as i have been exhibiting many of the symptoms for the past week and smell exhaust fumes all of the time even when i am not vehicle. if i test positive i will have my family tested as well, but this issue must be resolved before someone gets hurt or god forbid dies. as you know there are also delayed neurological manifestations which worries me the most as i don't know how long i have been exposed.

Ford explorer recall - exhaust leaking into cabin i took my vehicles into crouse ford due to the recall on my 2016 explorer. over the next two months i drove the vehicle daily, but as time went on i started to feel dizzy, nauseous and had constant headaches. i did not put two and two together until we drove a long distance and my daughter who sat in the rear seat had the same symptoms. i decided to take the vehicle back to the service center and they found two additional leaks. at first ford told me that they would not cover the cost even though it was tied to the recall since i noticed it after two months of the original fix. where the exhaust was leaking had nothing to do with their recall fix. after 5 days they decided to cover 80% of the cost. i am not convinced that they have resolved the issue, but action needs to be taken before this recall kills someone or permanently affects them. i just hope that i do not have long term affects from being exposed for that length of time.

When keeping a steady speed, rpms fluctuate up and down causing a jerky movement while driving. happens randomly or after idling for a few minutes. also, power decreases during this event, so when taking off, car doesn't want to accelerate, then lurches forward. also, when accelerating, particularly uphill, a burning smell comes from the vehicle.

I was driving on i-94 east in harrison twp, mi on 3/9/18. i was traveling a 70 mph. i heard something and suddenly i am saw white all around me like a tunnel. at that moment i was still in my lane. within seconds the i had no control of my vehicle as though i had no brakes or steering. my car veered left hitting the cement median. the car rolled on its left side and eventually flipped back upright. there were no other vehicles in the accident. my daughter, 14, and i were in the vehicle and were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. on 3/8/18 my vehicle was serviced at the ford dealer to replace a wheel bearing. the service man made a comment about our tires wearing quickly and shredding. we previously replaced them at 22,500 miles. currently my vehicle had 58,000 miles. the vehicle was a total loss. i truly think the accident was due to a defect in the car. i called ford to report the incident and they refused to investigate and wouldn't even send be a letter stating they would not. the insurance company said they will not investigate the car because i was the only vehicle so it was obviously my fault. both companies refused to investigate. my injuries were not substansial enough for anyone to take notice. i thought that is why vehicles have black boxes were installed. i am fearful 2016 explorer owners or the innoccent bystanders are going be hurt or worse if ford doesn't take this seriously. i truly believe the white tunnel was the side air bags deployed.

We purchased a new 2016 ford explorer sport 4wd 4dr in 2016. the oe tires on the vehicle were 4 hancook ventus s1 nobel 2 tires, sized 255/50r20. the dot rating is "5mnc 1a h". at 13,369 miles all 4 tires were replace under "warranty". the front tire treads were "flacking/peeling" . the work was done by mathews-currie ford, 130 tamiami trial north, nokomis fl 34275, on 5/10/17, ro # 6199123/1. our cost for the tires was $419.62. we were forced by hancook to replace "like with like". at 23,101 miles i took the vehicle back to the same dealer to have the oil changed. the replacement tires are again "flacking/peeling." the dealer tells me that we will have to replace them with the same tires. they also tell me that this a reoccurring problem with this brand of tires. my background is that of an executive in the oe and aftermarket automotive and heavy truck industry. my employers manufactured foundation brakes, brake chambers and ride control. i know an unsafe situation when i see one and this one is not safe. i was involved in a major safety recall on ride control and know what it can cost a company to not recognize what their potential liability can be. i am not comfortable for the safety of myself and my family with hancook tires. my request is that someone from your legal staff contact ford's legal department and warn them about the future liability being created for them by one of their suppliers.

Strong exhaust smell leaking into the cabin.

I have noticed theres a burning smelling from heater/ac vents right after acceleration from vehicle being stopped. i can confirm its a burning smell (similar to burning plastic or rubber). when the smell is present, it feels like theres lack of acceleration from the gas pedal. almost like if theres a clogged air filter or issue with transmission or exhaust. it feels like that kind of poor acceleration issue. the burning smells last for about 1-2 minutes and i'm not sure where its coming from. the odor is a very strong odor and i'm waiting for a fire to break out somewhere when this odor is present. i have a service appt on monday, feb 26 and hopefully something will be found. the last thing i want is to be driving and the vehicle breaks down, let alone catches fire for some reason.

Every time i accelerate or merge or drive with all the windows up, i can smell a engine exhaust/burning type smell. this smell gives me a head ache and makes me feel nauseas. i have already had the 'carbon monoxide concerns' dealer service and this smell has not changed. i have to put the windows down constantly to not smell this smell that gives me a head ache.

The last (3) times my son has been in our 2016 ford explorer he has vomited. he is 2.5 years old and we have a daughter on the way in 2-3 weeks. it is just now clicking that this is probably a co2 issue since he is always fine once he gets out of the car. it is always about 10 minutes after driving. he becomes dizzy and looks down. it is awful. we have tried to get the part from ford for weeks but they say they are back-ordered. please help!

My family is getting sick while in the car. adults with symptoms of dizziness and nausea. children with symptoms of nausea, headaches and vomiting. the vehicle is in motion and has happened on county, state and highway roads. getting out of the vehicle makes the symptoms go away.

Very stong carbon-monoxide smell in cabin. i have to put windows down to drive. took to ford for the recall repair, still have an issue. happens when car is sitting & while being driven.

I reported this earlier today, but wanted to add to here that i talked to a representative to ford and told him that the car was leaking exhaust into the cab of the car. he advised me to "drive it" to another dealership about 20-30 minutes away. i asked if he was willing to put his child in this car as this is what he is advising me to do. he said he would not. please use this information as you can as ford customer service is now putting people in and outside of the car in serious danger by advising them to drive vehicles that are obviously not road worthy. disgusting a company is allowed this... thanks

Anytime i accelerate to highway speeds, a strong exhaust odor fills the passenger cabin. i was told it was nothing to worry about but now i saw a news article that raised new concerns and suggested reporting this issue if present.

Been getting headaches for the past month as well as dizziness and feelings of nausea. yesterday car had overwhelming exhaust odor inside of car that made me extremely ill all day yesterday... i did call ford and they had it towed to a ford dealer who stated they will change out clips. want to be sure to report as it appears it is an ongoing problem with this vehicle typle.. the smell could be smelt as soon as car was turned on, and worsened as car was driving down road. faster the car would move the worse it got.

I bought the 2016 ford explorer xlt last week from a ford dealer, i drove it home which is 35-40 minutes away from the ford dealership and both my wife and i had severe headache. there was an odor inside the cabin which was causing the headache/nausea. we couldnt explain why the odor was there and when we researched online, we were shocked to find that the ford explorer had the carbon monoxide leak issue. we are not able to drive our car for more than 15-20 minutes without getting a headache.

Very strong exhaust fumes entering vehicle at or above 3500 rpm. it happens every time accelerating to highway speed. entire cab fills with fumes immediately and does not disapate until all windows are rolled down. experienced headaches, dizziness and nausea. owner had to trade vehicle (at their expense) as defect was causing daily health problems. ford needs to be forced to notify consumers about this problem before vehicle is purchased. owner had 2015 ford explorer with same problem and won lemon law case against ford - lemon law arbitrators smelled what they described as exhaust fumes during lemon law hearing test drive. ford repair attempts do not work! nhtsa and ford need to determine fix or recall vehicles. exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide as well as many other toxic chemicals. ford admits exhaust fumes entering vehicle but claims low volume/safe. please consider that infants and young children cannot be exposed to same carbon monoxide levels as adults without very serious and life threatening harm. ask a doctor, not ford!!!

We now drive with windows partially open due to carbon monoxide exhaust gas entering the passenger compartment of our 2016 ford explorer. we are assuming that the exhaust manifolds are the problem.

Car has smelled awful since leasing. being gassed with carbon monoxide every time i drive it. took in for recall to varsity lincoln. they did not address it. drove car to frankenmuth for thanksgiving dinner 1 1/2 hour ride. something popped and the most awful gas smell came out and never went away everybody around us could smell it. dropped it off at tom holzer ford. they addressed the recall and smell by putting adshesive (tape) and sealant (glue) called and told it it was ready. the smell was not gone took it back 4 days later. was told the transfer case blew and they would need it for a few days to fix it. pick up car still smelled awful. went up north last week. three hour ride. the first hour i had the back windows open as always cause i know i am being poisoned. the next two hours were pouring rain could no longer drive with windows open. stopped for gas and groceries. got out of explorer and was dizzy, nauseated and my heart hurt couldn't think of what groceries i needed clerk asked if i was ok. told him not sure what was wrong with me figured it out i was poisoned carbon monoxide

When you drives slowly in between 15mph to 20mph 2nd to 3rd gear shifting it gaves tugg when it was in warrenty i bring to ford delarship but they said everything is ok never recommend ford it was my 1st experience with ford but all crap cars and suvs

I was driving on a major highway and my suv suddenly started loosing power and jerking (hesitating to move) i pulled over and started to smell burning oil or very unique smell almost like burning break fluid or carbon. took the car to the dealership and the smell was noticed immediately by the service rep. they could not find the issue and cannot explain the smell in my cars cabin. the smell is so strong when parked or during idle that we cannot run the ac or heater for fear of the smell making ya all sick. ford will not provide any insight or help and the smell is literally harming me and my children. the issue is ongoing and the smell has not let up. the car does sputter out when accelerating from time to time..no answers from ford on why that happens....completely lost and frustrated!

Smelling exhaust odors in the occupant compartment. concerns about exposure to carbon monoxide. smell is worse when car is stationary and when heater is on.

Car smells strongly like natural gas inside cabin when driving, and when sitting still - eyes burn, throat sore, headache after driving it for 5 mins or more.

Hankook ventus s1 noble 2 tires that are on the explorer are faulty causing the thread to shred. this could have caused my tires to come sort while driving and possible collision & injury. there was only 12,995 miles on them. no extreme driving conditions etc. i had to replace today.

Bought a 2016 ford explorer sport in nov.2016 used with 20k miles. as i was driving home i noticed a horrible smell and thought it was just something in the area never dreaming it was the car! i did a little research and found the car had a recall on it. the smell is horrible, so bad we have to ride with the windows down. im not sure why the dealership was even allowed to sell the car to me with disclosing this problem. i have taken the car to my local ford dealership and they are waiting on a response from ford. i would like them to buy the car back from me.i am driving a 2003 car now with 150k miles because i cannot drive my new car.

While operating the vehicle there is a constant odor of natural gas or exhaust like smell. the longer the period of time the vehicle is operated the more intense the odor becomes. if the windows are opened the odor dissipates but soon returns. a check of the exhaust system showed no visible signs of leakage. the odor is constant since the vehicle was owned.

I bought this car in august of 2016 and noticed when accelerating to get on a highway or doing any type of quick acceleration the vehicle put off an awful smell in the cab and the smell is similar to rotten eggs. i've brought the vehicle in for all its regular maintenance at the dealership and spoke with the service manager about the issue and the response i got was we heard this before but have no solution. no solution?? i'm breathing in god knows what and i'm always in the vehicle with my family, friends and business associates and that was the response i get! i have no idea what its possible doing to myself and others but i'll tell you this it cannot be good. i am at the point with this vehicle that i don't want to get in it any longer as i am concerned about my health and what possible damage its doing to me and others. i am so disappointed in the fact they have no solution and i will not be buying another ford product ever again.. this problem has been going on since the week i picked it up and has not stopped in over a year and 2 months. if there was a way to get rid of it today i would but unfortunately i still have a year and 8 moths before i can turn it in, which i will the first day i can legally can.. ford should take these cars back and terminate the loans or leases and let people go get something that's safer for them to be in. don't give back the money as myself and others have used the vehicles up till this point. to be fair ford motor company shouldn't be responsible to paying people back for a time that people used the vehicle but they should take them back. they are making vehicles ( ford explorers ) that are not safe for peoples health. one very dissatisfied customer. in the end they will get the car back and i will move along to another brand!

Carbon monoxide issue into the cabin of the vehicle

In october 2017 i started experiencing headaches, lung congestion, sinus drainage and overall fatigue. i normally work out at the gym 4 or 5 days a week but got to the point that i was coughing to much to exercise. mt blood pressure went up as well as my blood sugar levels. i put my explorer in for service twice because of the smell. the smell was strongest when i was driving (about one hour to and from work) with the heat on. the smell got better when i set the vents to cycle the internal air.

I passed out while driving my 2016 ford explorer down the freeway. the vehicle went off the roadway and down the embankment. the vehicle was a total loss. there is now a ford recall on the vehicle, issued today, 10/26/2017 (ford recall: 17n03) for carbon monoxide concerns. ford has known about this issue for months and not issued a recall until many months later. at the time of my collision, the county i live in was in a state of emergency and i went to the 1 open hospital. due to the circumstances and not thinking that carbon monoxide could have caused the incident, i did not get blood work done to confirm if i had been poisoned by carbon monoxide.

I am discovering every i drive my 2016 ford explorer i am getting headaches. my wife drove and she begin to have terrible headaches. when my children rode with me they felt nauseated.

Burning hair smell in cabin of vehicle. notice it during break in informed service adviser of smell when i took the vehicle in for the first service. taken back several times over the last two years witch results in the odor being worst now than first noticed. ford has replaced the air vent located between the hood and the windshield. they have replaced body panels and sealed opening in the rear of the vehicle. the last repair was to replace the entire exhaust system. during a trip to florida after the exhaust replacement we were about 100 miles from home driving 70+ mph on i-10. when my wife complained of her heart pounding, feeling nauseous and passed out for a moment. i noticed that i had a headache also and i immediately rolled the window down. within a few minutes my wife felt better so i did not continue to the nearest hospital as she had asked. we drove with the windows open for the rest of our 525 mile trip and drove home with them down for another 525 mile. since returning i have written a second letter to ford explaining our complaint. need to have the problem resolved. my wife has heart issues, takes blood thinners and may have been more susceptible to the carbon-monoxide than i. she is scared to drive the vehicle very much and we can not afford to purchase another one because we could not sell this one with it's problems.

Exhaust fumes are some how leaking through the cabin. fumes are mostly noticed when getting on the freeway or hard acceleration.

Every time i drive the explorer i get terrible headaches. my 11 year old daughter complains of the same thing. have to keep windows cracked to let bad smell out of the cabin. when walking near car you can smell it and fills garage with terrible smell

When accelerating or going up incline car starts to smell like carbon monoxide (like the heater is on). circulation is within car. in order to get out must put on outside circulation and roll down windows.

Carbon dioxide warning. don't feel safe driving the vehicle, want to return and a deserve all funds returned. what is being said on the national news is absurd and if ford know about this and putting my life and my family's lives at risk.

Re: case number is 1095836. i again experienced carbon monoxide in my 2016 ford explorer cabin. once on september 3, 2017 on a downhill path on a rural rod in the mountains above santa fe, nm with the air conditioner on, but not on recirculate mode and again in santa fe on a city street on september 8, 2017 with the air conditioner on. both times i was driving at 20 - 30 mph. i have a carbon monoxide detector installed in the third row of the explorer which set off an alarm. i immediately turned off the a/c and opened the windows. the alarm turned itself off almost immediately. i did not notice any exhaust fumes. the first time i was in a line of traffic with 3 - 4 car lengths between the car that i was following. the second time there was no traffic ahead of me on the city street.

I have a fume smelling like boiled eggs really strong coming inside my vehicle causing me to become nausea with headache and dizziness

I have a 2016 ford explorer limited edition under my dads name and my wife is the primary driver on it. after getting our car i drove it daily as commuter for 2 months and sometimes i smell something bad inside like burned tires but i just ignored it because i said my car is bnew and maybe its from outside and after that my wife start driving it but last december 2016 we went to vegas and i janssen (husband) is the one driving on the car and smelled something burned tires inside the car while cruising on it, i checked the tires/break outside but i dont smell it from outside, so after that we went to our dealer and checked it found out theres a carbon monoxide present inside and they fixed it by covering the holes of the car that may be the entry of smoke from outside and updating the system as per service guy told me "rene" and said everything works well now. after few months it was june 2017 i smelled it again and concerned me more because my wife is pregnant and i know co2 is really bad on our health and i know that because we are both nurses and we sent it back to the dealer and my service guy "luis " told me they put some rubber in the rear door for the purpose of sealing the door that maybe the smoke from the exhaust is the one causing it and take note " the car stays 1 week in the service department". and now sept 2017 the same thing is happening and i called my dealership, i spoke to luis and casey and they told me there's still waiting for the service manager because they are bussy, i told them my concern that my wife is pregnant she's on 8 months now and it makes me really concerned of what is going on with the car but they just told me to wait, and my wife daily car is it. so incase something happen with my family this is not really safe for us, so i really need a big help from you nhtsa that we can solve this problem, i heard others too esp police. ty

Strong foul odor is coming out of the exhaust. we bought this vehicle brand new, the dealer have tried multiple times to find the cause of the issue and try to fix it, still not resolved. dealer told us to file a claim to ford, we did, ford stated that the car should be repaired by the dealer and that there are confidential processes that needs to be done before we would know what is the next step. the claims associate of ford stated that she cannot tell us the process for only ford and ford dealer employees are allowed to know the process. the said odor is very strong that it gives us chest pains, headache and nausea. one of my kids does have a severe allergy and my other kid is a special need child, we would need to drive the car with windows down in order for us to use the car. the dealer is doing a band-aid of deodorizing the car for they are waiting for the ford hotline tell them what can be done.

While accelerating or overtaking i smell fumes or smoke in the cabin. first time i called the dealer they told me that my cabin air filter might need to change. that didn't help. next time it occurred they told me i should use primiere gas. that didn't help. i have a 2 weeks old baby and scared what these fumes will do. i hope we can fix this before people start passing out and cras from this fumes which causes a dizzy spell. added to that, my wing mirror adjusts itself even while driving sometimes. this vehicle is still in the development stage and very faulty. really tired of going to "arrow ford" as i get no resolution. they had my vehicle for a total of 2 months and none of my concerns addressed

The vehicle puts off a strong odor through the air system when accelerating uphill or driving at higher rpms. the smell resembles a sulfur type smell in the cabin.
