Problems with 2013 Ford Explorer ENGINE

On average, the 2013 Ford Explorer starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 49 585 miles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. after the contact retrieved the vehicle from the dealer for repairing an exhaust odor inside the cabin, the failure still occurred. the contact was advised by the mechanic that the second step of the repair process needed to be performed because the first step failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 59,216.

When vehicle is under acceleration, there is an exhaust smell throughout the cabin. ford has attempted to correct the issue, but the exhaust smell remains under acceleration.

Climate control system. there is a pungent odor coming from the system at various times, usually when the air conditioner is operating. this has been an ongoing issue and the source has not been identified. the engine will begin running rough at idle, both in drive and park, as though it were going to stall. the problem was checked and compared to another new vehicle, which had not been purchased, and identified as being "normal". most recently both catalytic converters failed. they were replaced and it does not appear to have corrected any other issue.

While driving my explorer will lose all power after 30-45 minutes it will restart and run fine for a day or so and then happen again. when it loses power all of the warnings will appear and the radio will still work. when i restart the vehicle it takes a minute for the engine to turn over. this is very scary and dangerous when i am driving down the highway at 70 mph. i see there have been many complaints about this but no recall! this has also happened while driving a both 35-40 mph on city streets and has happened a total of about six times. *tr

Strong exhaust/gasoline smell inside the cabin while driving with windows closed and the air conditioning on.

Oil supply line to turbo leaking. no parts available to make the repair through ford. this is the same part failure and has caused a recall in the 2016 - 2017 ford explorer sports. ford needs to look at previous years to determine if a recall should be done for all 2011 to present. (fire hazard)

'takata recall' strong smell of sulfur, engine oil and gasoline.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving approximately 45 mph, the contact's vehicle shut off without warning. the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road. the dealer diagnosed that the throttle body and motor assembly failed. the throttle body was replaced and the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 61,900.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while the vehicle was idling with either the air conditioner or heat activated, the odor of carbon monoxide entered the cabin. the contact stated that the condition was worse while in recirculation mode. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (hayford ford, 1330 301st ave ne, isanti, mn, 55040) who stated that they could repair the vehicle per tsb: 16-0165, but it would be at the contact's expense. the vehicle was not repaired due to the cost of the remedy. the manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that there was a tsb, but no open recall and out of pocket expenses. the failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

My truck has almost 120000 miles. and we were driving and notice the check light came on. we went to advance auto and had the truck scanned to see what code would come up. it said there was two cylinder misfired. and that it probably came from bad fuel. and then the engine started jumping and skipping. we finally got it to firestone and they said there's tapping and knocking at the bottom of the engine. they came to the conclusion that now the truck needs a new engine. they quoted me a rough estimate of $10,000. we've kept up with all the oil changes along with having the a/c compressor replaced because it went out as well. the warranty company will only replace the engine with a used or remanufactured engine for $3700. there is no way a 2013 ford explorer with less than 120,000 miles needs a new engine. and we also smelled exhaust fumes through the vents inside the vehicle.

Exhaust smell is extremely noticeable and disturbing, especially because i am travelling with a 3 year old. what can be done to resolve this issue immediately? i had a similar issue when the gas line had a leak and that is all i could smell.

I had an incident in july 24, 2016 when i came to a stop at a highway toll booth the vehicle started stalling the low oil pressure message came on and stalled i restarted the vehicle the message went away and ran normal thought it was a clutch so i left it align. checked oil level and it was normal. well today 10/06/2016 my mother in law the vehicle belonging to her was driving on the highway to where speed limit is 70mph. traffic came to a slow down almost a stop vehicle did the same low oil pressure message came on and stalled with my kids on board. she had to put in park and restarted the vehicle in the middle of the highway posing danger to other motorist and most important my family. something needs to be done before something bad happens to someone that could have been prevented by a recall and further investigation. thank you for your cooperation. *tr

There is an exhaust smell (like burnt hair) inside the cabin when the car accelerates, especially a hard acceleration and often when the air conditioning is on. certified dealer cannot identify cause of issue or how it occurs.

While driving an error message with wrench symbol came on and car wouldn't move. i pressed gas pedal and still wouldn't go. i was driving on a city street in heavy traffic..

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving various speeds on several occasions, the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the throttle body had excess deposits, which caused the vehicle to stall. the vehicle was repaired. the contact stated that the failure was intermittent. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 62,000.

The throttle body fails causing my vehicle to enter "limp" mode regardless of location or current speed. will go 70 on a highway then all of the sudden lose speed and speed control. this issue can also happen when accelerating, slowing down, etc. the biggest worry is losing speed control regardless of location. this issue has been identified in other ford models and is being voluntarily repaired (by ford). however, for some reason the 2013 ford explorer was not included in this. obviously losing throttle control while driving, hence fords voluntary repair of the issue. the issue started two weeks ago and randomly happens. last happened on 05 aug 2016.

Exhaust smell in interior of vehicle. i typically drive with a/c or heat on (seasonally) and always use outside air (no re-circulation). smell is more noticeable when idling at a stop light or otherwise not in motion. have tried two service calls recently with no resolution. an additional related issue is an even stronger fuel smell in my garage. this is more of a pre-combustion smell. the dealer reported that this is normal as a result of the capless gas tank filter system. definitely a health hazard for anyone entering the garage, and the smell gets into the house. these issues have persisted for the past 6-12 months, getting worse over time. to date, the dealer has no resolution for either issue. please help.

Exhaust smell in cabin during heavy loads on engine. i have had the tsb completed by ford and still have this problem.

On two separate occasions, the car stalled after de-accelerating to a stopped position and made a "clunk" sound from the transmission area. during the first event at a traffic light, a very noticeable "clunk" was heard that sounded like the transmission. the car was re-started and seemed to drive normally. to be on the safe side, we brought the car to the dealership to have it checked but they could find nothing wrong. during the second event at a stop sign, another very noticeable "clunk" was heard from the underside of the car and the car actually shifted so that it was felt by the body. after re-starting the car this time and placing it into drive, this time the car did not move when pressing down on the gas pedal. instead, only the engine revved up. in addition, when putting the gear into the reverse or drive position, that loud "clunk" sound and the physical shifting of the vehicle also happened. because the car would literally not go, we called for a tow-truck and took it to the ford dealership. at the dealership, a customer care rep and a technician came outside to look at the car. when putting the car into reverse and drive, the same "clunk" and shifting of the vehicle was observed and acknowledged by both men. however, at this point the car would move forward when applying the gas. we left the car at the dealership for evaluation. when following up early the next week, ,we were informed that they had driven the car about 100 miles over the course of three trips and the car was running normally. also, we were told that the diagnostic/evaluation of the pcm and transmission did not show anything was wrong. in my opinion, there are two problems here: #1, the stalling/transmission problem and #2, the inability to identify the problem for such a major event

Delay or lag under heavy acceleration, was making a left onto incoming traffic, should have had enough time under normal circumstances but there was about a 3 second delay before the engine really kicked in ended up almost causing an accident, i've never felt so powerless to do anything other than veer out of the lane to avoid getting hit

Delay or lag under heavy acceleration, was making a left onto incoming traffic from a complete stop, should have had enough time under normal circumstances to make the turn but there was about a 3 second delay before the engine really kicked in and started accelerating and ended up almost causing an accident, i've never felt so powerless to do anything other than veer out of the lane to avoid getting hit

Bought a used ford explore xlt with 32k miles. as i have been driving the suv i am noticing that whenever i fully press down on the gas peddle to increase my acceleration whether i am merging onto the freeway, changing lanes or scaling a hill, the cabin is filled with a strong emissions odor. which worries me because i normally have children in the vehicle. as i let up on the gas peddle the odor dissipates. i have noticed this odor when i have my max a/c function on which is using recirculated air.

Vehicle emits bad odor upon hard acceleration or any other activity which puts a strain on the engine. dealer deodorized the exhaust system with some perfume like substance which stopped the smell, but probably not the gas, for a while which soon wore off and returned. ford does not claim to know anything about the issue. i'm concerned about carbon monoxide and have thought about putting in a sensor to record the levels. there is something wrong with the exhaust system.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact noticed strong fumes inside the vehicle which caused nausea and headaches. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 35,000. updated 06/02/17*lj

Exhaust fumes enter the cabin during hard acceleration. this is most noticeable when all windows are closed and the climate control system is on. reproducible most easily when at 30 mph or higher when merging onto a highway. this has happened since the vehicle was purchased new. one note: this may happen at any speed however the vehicle is not put under maximum or near maximum acceleration unless merging onto a highway or passing.

Fuel throttle body error p2111 has happened 5 times in 3 days, causing great distress to me and my family. this is a potentially deadly defect and it seems many others are having the same issue. what occurs is that a wrench appears on screen with the error message "terrain management system fault" and the vehicle goes into "limp mode," even at highway speeds, causing the accelerator pedal to become unresponsive.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that there were strong fumes emitting into the cabin of the vehicle, which caused nausea and headaches. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

Defective throttle body. vehicle unexpectedly shuts off. this has happened while turning in front of on coming traffic luckily the vehicle was able to coast to the shoulder. has also happened on the freeway and in the middle of an intersection. it has happened at least a dozen times. all power to vehicle is lost. part for vehicle is currently on national back order which indicates that there might be more problems with this part on other vehicles and not just mine.

Getting exhaust fumes in the cabin of vehicle at times. sometimes so bad that it makes you sick nauseous and headaches. ford refuses to fix problem under there warranty. it happens at any time slow or at highway speeds when using the ac or heater it is even worse.

Exhaust fumes when accelerating.

When driving loss of power happens. can not accelerate! car goes into limp mode. can happen at any time without warning. car has 40k miles. very dangerous if driving on the freeway. it has happened 3 times in the last week.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving at various speeds, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle lost power. the vehicle also hesitated before accelerating. in addition, the contact noticed an abnormal noise coming from the engine compartment and the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 125,000.

I purchased a new 2013 ford explorer in puerto rico on november 2014. since the first day it leaked exhaust fumes into the cabin when accelerating. after more than 10 service visits to the dealership, i was told by ford field service engineer carlos j. dominguez "there was nothing more they could do about the problem because it was caused the vehicle's design, the angle and height it stands from the road and the vacuum that caused when the vehicle accelerated". i was diagnosed with lymphoma - cancer a year and a month after i purchased my 2013 ford explorer. i traded it in for a new 2016 ford explorer last may in the hope the new model did not have the same issue, but it does. after dealership consulted ford, they asked me to bring the unit in to perform the same remedies as my previous 2013 ford explorer unit. consulted my oncologist and we are looking into the possibility that my 2013 ford explorer might have caused my lymphoma cancer.

Car has auxiliary a/c system and cabin will fill with exhaust smell after merging into traffic. this is to say after heavy acceleration and then backing off to traffic speed you can smell exhaust in the car and when i do i open a back window to get rid of the odor. have personally gotten headaches after longer drives and now suspect exhaust. a/c settings are in recirculation with the auxiliary system on also. dealership had a tech ride with me and we went for a drive in the car, he did not smell the exhaust to the same degree as i did but said there was a tsb to seal the rear area of the car and the rear valance would have to be taken off. (rather long job) dealership told me it would cost about $669 and is not covered by my extended warranty or by a safety recall. this is something i think the manufacture should take care of since it is a safety issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, the vehicle stalled and all the instrument panel lights illuminated as the wrench warning light illuminated. the contact coasted over to the side of the road and was able to restart the vehicle and it was driven to the residence. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 57,120.

Weird smell when a/c is turned on and when accelerating.

Under heavy acceleration (i.e. highway on-ramp), a very strong odor (burning rubber, exhaust?) enters the cabin. this happens every time, whether the ac is on or off, recirculating or fresh air. the odor is extremely strong and lasts several minutes. i'm especially concerned for my 3 year old son who is exposed to this.

Exhaust leak in cabin

Unpleasant foul odor emitted into passenger compartment whenever accelerating within mid to high rpm range such as when passing or pulling a grade. fumes smell similar to rotten eggs or sulfur. foul odor causes headaches during periods of extended exposure such as when driving for several hours. this condition has existed ever since the vehicle was purchased.

We bought our vehicle used in 2015 with less than 40k miles on it. it is our main, family vehicle. the first issues started with paint chipping on the hood. the ford store we bought it from never stated this was a problem. we did notice it after having it at home and it has gradually become worse. i have had usaa inspect it and they said it looks like "someone drove it where there was high sulfur present"---near water or etc. the second issue is with the engine. on several occasions our vehicle has failed to turn over at the first start. will sit there and make noises like it is trying but fail and turn off. one instance happened while we were driving on a street road. car had trouble starting and then shut off randomly. we have contacted usaa and taken the vehicle to our local ford dealership but they cannot seem to help resolve either issues. upon conducting our own research i see that these are re-occurring issues with other owners, across the us and ford has yet to resolve. vehicle is unsafe

During acceleration, there is a noticeable, exhaust smell in the cabin of the vehicle. the smell does not dissipate unless you open the windows or turn the a/c on high to clear the air.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning light illuminated. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the cause of the failure could not be diagnosed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 20,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact noticed an abnormal odor inside the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the failure could not be duplicated the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage and vin were unknown. updated 05/09/17*lj *cn

I own at 2013 ford explorer sport. on two separate occasions i have taken my explorer to the dealership because we keep smelling exhaust when we accelerate . the dealership has made attempts to repair the leak but as of today it's still doing it. i called ford today to see if has any more information they could pass along to remedy this problem and they only referred me back to the dealership. the sulfur is so bad sometimes we have to roll down the windows for fresh air which is not always good when the weather is bad. it happens with the air/heat is on and when it's not on. i'm at a loss now on how to get this repaired as it seems no one knows exactly what is causing it and no one is taking ownership of the problem.

Radiator hose breached, decompressing radiator. radiator hose was rubbed open by nearby metal compressor line running perpendicular. hole was 1" by 1/2". radiator immediately emptied, engine overheated and shuddered. repair made by ford dealership only replaced hose and flushed coolant. ford did not remedy situation where metal compressor line is adjacent and sometimes in contact with radiator hose. i have photo and video proving the ac line rubbed the hose open.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving 65 mph, exhaust fumes entered the vehicle. the failure recurred six times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician placed silicone and seal around the bumper and holes and reprogrammed the hvac. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred twice. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 35,000. ma 10/8 updated 11/02/2017*cn

As i was driving with my wife and three boys in a highway, the engine light turn on and the vehicle choke and turn off, the car that was coming in back off me nearly hit me causing a major accident. the car in back of me swong to the left nearly hitting the car coming on the left and my vehicle, my heart started pumping fast knowing what could had happened. this situation got me thinking not to thrust ford vehicles. i can't risk putting my family life in danger because of a fairly new vehicle. this shouldn't be happening on a two and half year old car. i took it to get dignostic test and it came out that the throttle body and pulge valve needs to be replaced. ford should recall these vehicle immidiately.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that while driving at 75 mph, the vehicle accelerated without warning. the brake pedal was depressed but failed to stop the vehicle. as a result, the contact shifted the vehicle in neutral in order to bring the vehicle to a stop. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where the failure was unable to be duplicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 62,000. the vin was not available.

Exhaust is entering the passenger compartment through the front and rear air conditioning vents when the engine is accelerated to 3500 rpm or above. i noticed this condition while driving around town, when passing another car or accelerating to enter the freeway, but the problem was really evident on a recent driving vacation from kansas city to seattle wa. we went through several mountainous states and it was terrible, the car was constantly accelerating above 3500 rpm to maintain speed on up hill grades, the car constantly reeked of exhaust. we had to roll the windows down to keep it aired out. i took the car to my ford dealer when i returned from the trip, they said there is no problem. i am not going to argue with ford over this,i have purchased a carbon monoxide meter which i keep in the car and have recorded carbon monoxide in the cabin as high as 15 ppm during acceleration. this car needs to be recalled,i have read that i am not alone, this problem exists on ford explorers manufactured from 2011 - 2015. why ?

I currently own a 2013 ford explorer that has approximately 51k miles. i've noticed on more than one occasion, that during periods of sustained driving we experience odor of certain gases or fumes. these odors are not constant, but they are present within the cab even while the windows are secure. again, the only experiences of these incidents so far are during periods of driving for 2 or more hours continuously. i've checked with the ford motor company, and searched online and i haven't found any recall information regarding emission problems of this nature. we, our family would appreciate if more research could be done on this matter. we personally believe that may lead to a health related illness/injury. sincereley [xxx] *bf 'information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).' *bf
