Problems with 2013 Ford Explorer ENGINE

On average, the 2013 Ford Explorer starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 49 585 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Ford Explorer

On 2 separate occasions the truck loses power while driving. this effects the engine, power steering basically anything that uses power. this has happened while driving 65mph and 35-40mph. one time it happened on a street, the other time was while driving on the highway. this is very dangerous.

Engine fail make noise

While driving in normal fashion in medium traffic engine all of a sudden died restarted after 5 minutes of attempts only to die again about 3 minutes later in middle of a turning lane. after being pushed to a parking lot it was discovered that head gasket was blown without any warning or signs. had to be towed over 100 miles to my home on a roll back truck paid by car insurance

My car started to leak coolant i've had to keep topping off coolant, took it to a ford dealership, stated it was my water pump which would cost about $2000 to fix. i am only at 108k miles & i was told by ford that they do not need maintencing and would last till 150,000 miles

When driving (various speeds high was 70 mph - low was 25 mph - various roadways) vehicle loses power goes down to about 5 miles per hour - check engine lights comes on-- message "see manual". happened intermittently for 5 months initially one time- may go a month before happens again . finally it started occurring 3 times within and hour then ok - did for that for two consecutive days before taking it to be fixed. called ford dealer they claimed they had heard of this - said it could be many things - i mentioned the reports of this on 2016 explored. took it to a local shop. replaced throttle body and throttle body gasket on 2 oct 2019- issue has not occurred since.

Vehicle's water pump began leaking during a normal patrol shift. we have had several of these fail at various mileages and each repair that was not under warranty has cost us around $2000.00 each time. i know these are not isolated incidents and that these water pumps fail often. i recall being at a fleet conference this past august and seeing a slide during a presentation from ford and it showing the casting difference between the old style and new style pump. the old casting was thinner near the seal area and that allowed for excessive heat which caused the seal to fail. the new style pump has a thicker casting to prevent this fault. i would like to see a warranty extension or recall on the these pumps just like ford ended up doing for the catalytic converters.

The engine began leaking coolant caused by the water pump seal failing. we have had several others that also have had water pump failures.

I have a 2013 ford explorer and have been recently experiencing random, dangerous stalls due to a faulty throttle body. i have had the throttle body cleaned twice and it continues to fail, leaving our car in a "limp-home mode" in dangerous road conditions. it usually stalls when accelerating from a low idle position, such as sitting at a stoplight and then accelerating. however, it had also stalled while traveling higher speeds and then accelerating. once i pull off the road, the car engine shakes violently until i'm able to put in park and then turn the ignition off. after a few seconds the engine will usually restart at normal idle and proper engine function is restored until the next throttle body failure.

Front manifold crack that is allowing exhaust fumes to enter the vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while pulling into a parking space and making a right turn, the engine suddenly shut off. after restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. during the failure, the power steering suddenly became inoperable and the steering wheel was difficult to turn in either direction. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer and local dealer were not notified. the failure mileage was 56,000.

While driving, engine stalls, with inability to accelerate, requiring vehicle to be stopped, turned off and restarted. a check engine light then appeared, which after taking vehicle to local dealership was determined to be a faulty throttle body which i was told has been common in ford vehicles/makes/models

Vehicle experiencing intermittent engine shut off under all driving conditons which exhibits a serious and dangerous situation when the vehicle abrubtly loses total power while driving. this has recently been an issue in the past two weeks while my wife and kids were driving on the freeway at 70 mph in traffic. vehicle started back up once the ignition was turned completely off and waited a few minutes to start the vehicle back up. this scenario occurred on the freeway, in town driving and while stopped at traffic light. contacted local ford dealership and all they said was to bring it in. i had a mechanic check it out and he was unable to retrieve any engine codes while running an ecu scan. there are several complaints noted online with other ford explorer owners who have attributed it to a "terrain management" fault. this is the same diagnosis my local mechanic came up with. this results in the engine control module to receive a throttle position in the wide open indication causing the vehicle to shut off. the vehicle is currently being operated in oahu, hawaii. i am currently deployed to the middle east so i am very concerned for the safety of my family while this is the only mode of transportation available to them.

We have noticed a car exhaust odor in our vehicle while at a standstill. the odor comes and goes and we are not sure what is causing it. it seems that car exhaust is coming into the vehicle through the car's ventilation system. the dealer ship could not find the issue. the vehicle did have the ford carbon monoxide customer satisfaction program completed.

Vehicle loses power when accelerating up hill or on flat surface. take off power is dimished and vehicle will sometimes die unexpectedly when accelerating.

Exhaust fumes inside vehicle causing nausea and headaches. happening consistantly for the last 3yrs

Initial complaint to ford dealership re: exhaust odors in cabin, possibly related to use of air conditioning (inspected 5/4/16, mileage 47,450, no repairs completed). performance recall 17no3 completed 10/22/18. exhaust odors worse after recall. ford dealership inspected again on 10/30/18. recommended using recirculation of cabin air at all times. air conditioning has since stopped working. per dealership rear a/c lines now need replacement, ext. cost of $2,100. cabin exhaust odors continue and inside of windshield is fogging. odors worse when stopped at stoplights. multiple occasions of co detection in cabin while in motion in rural areas. elevated cohb with various health symptoms and children now complaining of car sickness. various areas of rust also reported to dealership and new areas appearing (i.e. near drain vales of the liftgate). *dt *as

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, exhaust fume odor was detected inside the cabin of the vehicle. the contact rolled the windows down and heard an abnormal noise emerging from the engine compartment. the vehicle was taken to the dealer quirk ford (540 southern artery, quincy, ma 02169) where they determine that the exhaust manifold was fractured and needed replacement. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 65,239. the vin was not available.

We recently began smelling a pungent 'sulfur' or 'rotten egg' like smell that comes and goes in the interior cabin of our explorer while driving the vehicle. typically this seems to occur while or just after driving at freeway speeds/accelerating. we believe this is in line with other instances people have had in explorers of possible exhaust leaks into the interior cabin space of the vehicle. we have 83,000 miles on our 2013 awd 3.5l explorer limited. we took our vehicle to a ford dealer under customer service satisfaction program service # 17n03, but they stated our specific vin does not apply to this service & thus would not cover that service fix for this issue.

Three times in the last 2 weeks i've had either gasoline or exhaust fumes inside of the vehicle. i was accelerating on either a city street or highway uphill and the a/c was on.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. on several occasions, while driving, excessive exhaust fumes and a fuel odor entered the vehicle. the contact suffered headaches and dizziness due to the exhaust fumes. medical attention was not received. the vehicle was taken to kenny ross ford south (located at 3200 library rd, castle shannon, pa 15234, (412) 881-0001) where the mechanic stated there was a definite odor in the vehicle; however, he was unsure if it was carbon monoxide. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 75,000.

My explorer has an issue when stopped and in drive with the ac on the car pulls/lunges foward as if i hit the gas/ also when im parked and the air con is running at some point the engine goes down below 500 rpms then kicks up to 700 to compensate then kicks down to below 500 , over and over again. if rev the engine a bit, then it goes back down to normal idle and its fine for maybe 10 minutes then does it all over again. this can be a safety issue as the car pulls itself foward with no human interaction. there is multiple websites declaring this is a known issue for this car. google 2013 explorer rough ac idle you will see lots of people commenting on it.

Twice bring to the dealership about carbon monoxide leak in cabin? making sick nauzia feeling i'll? now look like my lungs are swallowing? please tell me what to do

The engine began leaking coolant caused by the water pump seal failing. we have had several others that also have had water pump failures.

There is an exhaust leak on the vehicle allowing toxic fumes into the cabin.

My 2013 ford explorer xlt has been to the repair shop twice in order to address ford recall 17no3. to this day, january 31, 2018, my co monitor picks up high readings (in my opinion) for such an enclosed space of a vehicle cabin (12-43 ppm). i drive a lot for work and am being constantly exposed to these fumes. my wife and i also have a 1 year old that we refuse to place in this car because even low levels are more dangerous to him. the readings occur while driving and accelerating, also when the vehicle is on recirculate. i've noticed that i get high readings of carbon monoxide levels after starting the vehicle or even just checking the vehicle periodically throughout the day. after getting into my car for lunch, the car was even turned off and i had a reading of 43ppm on my monitor (which i leave in the car). this tells me that toxic fumes are leaking from the exhaust into the cabin, even when the car is off, and staying in the vehicle because things have been sealed off due to ford's "attempts" at fixing this issue. ford explorer, not just me, can't afford to put our health at risk while ford denies there's a problem. considering that co is odorless, you don't need to be able to smell the exhaust fumes for carbon monoxide to be present in great amounts for enclosed spaces. the picture that i have attached is only 1 of at least 25 pictures and videos i have compiled to make my case that ford's "attempt" to fix this issue is being ignored by them.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving various speeds, an unknown odor was detected inside the vehicle on the driver's side. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and repairs. the contact called crossroads ford cary (2333 walnut st, cary, nc 27518, (877) 280-8932) and the manufacturer and was informed that there was an ongoing investigation and to contact nhtsa. the failure mileage was 25,000.

My wife and i took a trip for a baby shower, it was about a 2.5 hr drive. on the way there, the check engine light turned on. there were no other warnings or indications of an issue. we made it fine to our destination, drove around town a little bit, and stayed the night. the next day we headed home (another 2.5 hr trip). the check engine light was on the entire time, but there were no abnormal noises or odors, or any other indication that there was an issue. when we got home, we parked the car, turned it off, unloaded, then turned it on to back it into the garage and turn it off again. after sitting in the garage for 10 -15 minutes, the car exploded, shaking the house and catching the engine bay on fire. the engine bay was engulfed in flames, causing fire/smoke damage to our garage and everything in it. an independent investigator stated that the cooling fan had failed, which caused the check engine light, however that seems like not a sufficient reason to why the engine exploded. we are unsure what the root cause was, but something had to have gone very wrong for the car to explode in the garage, ignition off, and stationary and the only indication being a check engine light even if the cooling fan did fail. this all happened just over a week after an oil change at a ford dealership. this could have been a very dangerous situation that could have very likely ended up in injury or death.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. within less than a week of owning the vehicle, carbon monoxide entered the vehicle. the dealer (skalnek ford, 941 s lapeer rd, lake orion, mi 48362, (248) 693-6241) stated that there was a tsb that could be performed on the vehicle. an unknown part was replaced, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but they were unable to provide a solution. the manufacturer issued three recalls on the fuel system. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa action number: ea17002 (structure, engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.

Timing chain stretch. $3,000 to fix it

Smell of exhaust inside cabin under hard acceleration. this vehicle had the ford complementary repair done in july. defect still occurring.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving in a high traffic area for over thirty minutes, the contact felt dizzy and light headed. the symptoms recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to welsh motors ford (330-549-3925, located at 13760 woodworth rd, new springfield, oh 44443) where it was stated that there was no recall on the vehicle. the contact's symptoms returned and the vehicle was taken back to the same dealer several times. the dealer later diagnosed that the gasket needed to be replaced. again, the contact's symptoms returned. the contact stated that during a four hour road trip, one of her family members suffered the same symptoms. no one received medical attention. the vehicle was taken back to the same dealer and it was diagnosed that the duct tape on the exhaust fell off. the duct tape was replaced, but the symptoms continued. the vehicle was taken back to the same dealer where the technician test drove the vehicle and stated that there was no failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the situation and did not assist. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 48,700.

Odor noticed in vehicle cabin intermittently while driving, particularly while accelerating. have now found out that the vehicle has a cracked exhaust manifold.

Driving at 55mph on a highway my ford explorer sport 2013 completely shut off and a amber wrench came on along with 2 more warnings (terrain management system fault and service traction system light). i was able to pull over and restart the vehicle, but it did it 2-3 times the same night. luckily i was able to get it to the dealership the same day without causing an accident. i can't imagine what would of happened on a interstate at a higher speed.

I found cracks in the door jam of the rear liftgate on the driver's side of the vehicle. following this discovery i found floor boards soaked in water, water dripping down my 3rd row seat belt onto the floor boards and into the spare tire well. following this my moonroof quit working. then i received a letter regarding emissions entering the back of the vehicle and causing people to pass out and wreck their vehicles. took the car to ford and the ford dealership won't cover the cracks in the non wrecked vehicle under the emissions warranty because they state they are unrelated. if water is getting into the back of the car through a crack then emissions probably are too.

Carbon monoxide / exhaust enter into the cabin during daily driving. confirmed with gas detector

Under moderate to hard acceleration strong smell of exhaust fumes inside passenger compartment of vehicle. can make it happen on demand.

The vehicle was tested and found to have 10 ppm of co in the interior.

Exhaust enters the cabin during heavy acceleration at medium to high speed. this has been happening since we purchased the car new in 2013.

The turbo boost went out on my 2013 explorer, i have had this vehicle for 15 months and it has 76000 miles on it. apparently the part is backordered due to this happening to a ton of explorers. i had to go on a waiting list and i am number 488 to get this part, they are telling me it will take months and it is unsafe to drive. i could loose power when driving and make things worst. this is a safety issue and i can't be without a car. the dealership will not give me a loaner car either. i have seen a lot of e-mails regarding the same thing, don't you think that this should be a recall due to safety issues? i am beside myself and have know idea how i am going to be without a car, do i chance driving it and may possible get killed because i loose power? the check engine light comes on and off all the time when driving no matter where i am driving...

Exhaust fumes when i accelerate, not floor boarding it but just regular acceleration that you smell in the cabin. i brought it to ford dealership and they said it was nothing. this issue has been going on since i got the vehicle in 2015 october.

Rotten egg/sulfur smell in cabin during hard acceleration / c02 infiltration causing passenger headaches / nausea. when accelerating to highway or freeway speeds or accelerating to pass a vehicle there is a significant sulfur smell in the cabin. the smell is significantly worse when the air conditioning is on and in recirculate mode, but is present regardless of ac or recirc mode (can be when vent or heat is active also).

This make/model/year has a known factory defect that caused the exhaust manifold to blow exhaust directly into the cabin. i had to force the dealer to fix this, as they argued exhaust is not dangerous. i have attached the instructions on how to fix this, from the factory, proving it was a known serious issue, not disclosed to me. the dealership did a horrible job in the "repair" - having broken other parts of the car in the process. after they "repaired" the car, it began randomly shuddering, while idling. i have attached a video of it. you will need to turn up the volume to the max, as youtube compressed the sound terribly. i have one witness to this happening twice. the engine starts vibrating with such ferocity that it sounds as though the vehicle is about to explode. the witness is willing to testify in court. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=johecicectk . this vehicle has completely fallen apart around me. there are 10 other major mechanical issues, which ford refuses to fix.

My vehicle is exhibiting the exhaust smell in the cabin concern. it has been verified by the technician at jones ford in north charleston, sc. i purchased the vehicle used in january 2017. it currently has 58000 miles on it. ford is telling me that they will not cover this issue under the extended warranty i purchased from them.

There is a consistent smell of sulfur or gas coming into the car through the vents. i was light headed and dizzy while driving. stopped and roll the windows down. this was not just once but ford is doing nothing about the problem. i searched for recalls and they said there is no recall on my ford explorer for this issues. please advise as to what i am to do?

Since purchasing our ford explorer new exhaust fumes fill the cabin when accelerating (increase in rpm). after long trips causes headaches and dizziness. it's been an ongoing issue for 4 years. we have had the ford service bulletins for this issue performed and problem remains.

Strong propane gas smell while driving.

We bought the vehicle used and with 48 hours noticed an exhaust smell inside cabin when sitting at a traffic light or stop sign.
