Engine damage due to overheating. regular and required oil changes are documented and implemented as scheduled. no other engine or vehicle malfunctions during the course of ownership, except regular oil changes and tire replacement. however, on may 15, 2019, vehicle sensor notified oil change needed. five days later vehicle stalled at local motel due to decreased power, rocking motion of car and luckily we were able to slowly turn into local hotel to cut off engine and get to safety. after 2 hours of letting vehicle set and cool down, local mechanic, checked and said we had enough oil in vehicle and not sure what happened. was able to drive vehicle home, with no sensors on dashboard alerting us to any further problems. three days later, with no visible sensors flashing, car began to exhibit rocking motion not sputtering motion as i began to pull out in four-way intersection, and approaching traffic heading my way. then suddenly, car regained power and was able to continue to proper lane as if nothing was wrong. after traveling another 1.6 miles, car just starting losing power, check engine, low oil pressure light, temperature light warning all appeared suddenly. i was able to drift in middle lane in front of dealership where vehicle was purchased. i immediatedly turned vehicle off and walked to dealership to get help in moving vehicle off the road. after 3days of waiting, duncah dealership in christiansburg, va, notifed us that head gasget was cracked and over 7,000 repair bill was needed to fix engine repair. as noted before no major problems has ever been repaired or replaced regarding this vehicle. during the two incidents regarding the vehhicle losing power, without no visible vehicle sensor notifications is of great concern to us regarding our safety in driving our vehicle. thankfully, we weren't on a major highway.
2011 ford explorer carbon monoxide poisoning concerns recall accident occurred on may 14, 2019 at houston, texas i slept off while driving and ran into another vehicle who stopped at a stop light waiting for the green light to turn on. i was not able to stop at the stop light because i slept off because of carbon monoxide poisoning. i had no reason to experience such. i was also, constantly smelling fuel coming into my 2011 ford explorer. the car i ran into and mine were seriously damaged. the police came and wrote a report on the accident. on two different more occasions, same things happened to me, but luckily i did not run into any other car or damage my car. it was at this juncture that i started talking with friends and family members about my repeated sad experience driving my 2011 ford explorer and was informed by one of my family members that there was a nationwide recall on ford explorer because of carbon monoxide poisoning concerns. i directly verified and discovered it was true. i then wasted not time to call, mac haik ford motor company, houston, texas and complained about my experience driving my 2011 ford explorer and question why i was not on time, officially informed about the 2011 ford explorer carbon monoxide poisoning concerns recall. they apologized and asked me to bring in my vehicle to be fixed free of charges. i took my vehicle to mac haik, where the fixed only the recalls and not the over five thousand dollars body and internal damages my vehicle sustained. my question now is how can i get ford motor company to fix my damaged vehicle and the other vehicle i ran into because of the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning which i suffered while driving my 2011 ford explorer, free of charges? *tt *tr consumer stated car was repaired, free of charge. Car turned off as i was slowing down for a traffic light. panel read " no power to engine" or something to the effect. was not able to take a photo of panel due to i was caught in traffic with cars behind me.
We were traveling i-26 from sc back into nc after thanksgiving. my car dinged and said coolant temp was too high. thankfully i was right at a rest area and immediately pulled in and turned off the car. tried adding coolant and it poured out the bottom. had my explorer towed to my mechanic. turns out the water pump blew. in most cases a water pump replacement is not a big deal. except whoever designed this engine was not thinking because the water pump is inside the engine. so even to replace the water pump (a part costing less then $200), the labor makes it at closer to $1500. but, also, because the water pump is inside the engine, when it blew, coolant and water went into my engine causing engine failure, meaning the whole engine now needs to be replaced. so a car with 71,000 miles on it needs a whole new engine because of a water pump. i am thankful i was in a position to pull over immediately, because if the engine had gone out on the busy interstate, that could have been a terrible crash. if a water pump can cause engine failure, that is not a car i want to be in with my children. dangerous not only to us, but to others traveling near us. ford needs to rethink this design. not only is it costly to repair, but more importantly it can be very dangerous.
My 2011 ford explorer was in motion on a city street when the water pump immediately failed. this happened without warning. there were no check engine lights or warning signs. my temperature gauge shot up and my engine seized. the engine is unable to be turned on at this time.
Was driving the car and as soon as we pull in the parking lot the engine light came on and the car won't move. it was towed to ford mechanic and they said the water pump was fault which made the coolant to enter the engine hence messing up the engine and i needed to replace the engine. it cost me arms and legs to fix the engine. ford need to recall water pump failure which is leading to costly fixing of the engine. the roof was also leaking and the water was dripping through back seat belt. today i was pulling off the parking the power steering fault light came on , and it was hard to turn the steering . this car has a lot if prblems .
My 2011 ford explorer only has 104k miles. in october of 2018 the car repeatedly shut off while driving home from work with no indication that anything was wrong. the next day it happened again, when i got it to finally turn back on the check engine light came on. i took it in to be checked and was told the antifreeze has spilled into the engine and we would need to replace the entire engine! i bought this car brand new and have had numerous problems including the steering lock recall as well as needing the radiator replacement in the first 3 months of my purchase. also, no indication prior to those incidents either! i currently have this car sitting in my driveway and no answers from ford. the cost to fix is over 6k! i noticed a recall being issued for this problem, however my model car is not included! this should include all ford vehicles.
I was driving down the highway then all of the sudden the truck overheated at 65 mph i got off at the next exit and stop the truck next thing i notice is smoke coming from the hood then i call a tow truck to go to a local shop now the mechanic say i need a new engine,i dont have the money to pay for a new engine and the labor the truck is not even pay off yet, unbelievable, now that i read up on this this happen to many other people this is a common problem that hasn't been recall yet smh
I was driving my 2011 ford explorer (65,000 miles) when i suddenly lost all power to my gas, break and steering wheel. luckily i was going close to 10-15 miles per hour and i managed to veer onto someone's lawn and hit the emergency break. i was told that there was oil leaking into the engine that cause a complete engine failure. no sensors went off prior to the incident and i have only gotten my car repaired at the ford dealership.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford explorer. the contact heard an abnormal noise progressing from the area of the alternator assembly and the serpentine belt. while driving approximately 65 mph, there was a sudden loss of power. the contact had to coast the vehicle slowly to be parked at the contact's residence. the dealer (bergey's ford, 700 n bethlehem pike, ambler, pa 19002, (215) 793-3700) indicated that the vehicle would need to be diagnosed. the manufacturer indicated that there was no warranty, recall, or manufacturer campaign; therefore, no solution was offered other than the dealer diagnosing and repairing the vehicle. the vin and failure mileage were not available.
Its a known fact that while driving, the water pumps suddenly break with no prior warning/symptom. fluids mix as a result, contaminated fluids mandate complete engine replacement . ford motor co. will not assume any responsibility or offer one bit of assistance for repair costs when dealerships could have offered water pump replacement as a preventative maintenance item. dealership is now asking me for $7100.00 to replace engine when this all could have been circumvented with a simple maintenance recommendation from the dealers who know this is going to happen. vehicle was purchased pre-owned from a ford dealer with a ford 100,000 mile extended warranty (which expired as of my last oil change) and i am still paying off the vehicle itself. ford had the audacity to say "you can apply for a ford credit card to pay for your engine" when i told them that $7,100.00+ tax is currently outside of my lump sum current budget parameters. ford assumes no level of accountability for these poorly manufactured cars and the consumers who purchase them are sheer victims. never will another ford be purchased within my family again if they do not step up to the plate and offer some form of assistance for this all too common malfunction.

My vehicle has strong exhaust fumes coming in it as i drive which makes me let down windows to receive fresh air.i took it to the ford dealer and they wouldn't fix it but they had police explorers there fixing the same problem.
I have 2011 ford explorer, which i take into the local ford dealership for maintenance regularly. i have had me explorer a little over 2 years. ever since i purchased my explorer and i would take it in for maintenance, i would tell them i smell exhaust fumes on the inside of my vehicle. only once did they check it for me. at that time, they said the guy couldn't smell anything. well, today 8-24-17, i had to take it in for another issue. my explorer engine would completely shut off when i would decelerate. needless to say that was a serious issue while driving...they are repairing today. but, i also ask them to check for exhaust smells once again. well today, i guess someone smelled the exhaust because they told me they could fix it at a cost over $200.00. said it was an update for the exhaust module or something like that. i have an issue with paying that, since i know that there has been several complaints about this very issue with my model of ford explorer and that there is a class action lawsuit against ford to resolve this issue. the reason i know this is because when they initially said they didn't smell anything i googled to see if anyone else had this problem and they did. when i ask the dealership today why i would have to pay that, they said because my vehicle is not a police vehicle and there is no recall on my vehicle for the exhaust problem. so, i guess if my vehicle was a police vehicle, it would be repaired by ford for free. point blank, i would like my 2011 ford explorer repaired by ford at no cost to me for the exhaust problem.
Strong fume / exhaust smell is present when accelerating onto the highway with the a/c in either recycle mode or normal mode. lightheadedness can be present at times associated with accelerating the vehicle. this exhaust smell has been present for several years, and doesn't seem to go away or change.
Car was fine then all of a sudden over heating sign went on in the car . i pulled over on the freeway called a tow truck because i was told not to drive the car. i had it towed to my house had a professional mechanic look at it at my house i was then told that there was a leak and the water tank was not holding water because of it. the next day i went to my car i turned it on and check engine light was on. i then turned off the car cause i did not want to cause anymore damage. the mechanic came back to my house and told me it was now leaking water and oil to take it in right away. i had no previous problems with my car until that point. i take it to the dealer they tell me that it was an internal problem within the engine that i, the driver, could not have known about unless i was having previous problems with the car which i was not. 230 dollars later just to tell me what is wrong with the car ford is telling me that water got into the engine, transmission, all of the fluids and pipes. how does this happen with no previous problems with the car? i believe this issue needs to be resolved i have read many reviews on this model and this issue needs to be recalled
I first began experiencing braking and battery issues 3 to 4 weeks after the purchase of my vehicle. i took the vehicle in for servicing of the braking and battery issues. i was informed by the service advisor that i should return the vehicle to dealership for repairs due to the multiple issues with vehicle. at that time, i learned that there was leakage from the upper portion of the engine. the dealership addresses some but not all issues related to the vehicle. next, i received an email from the dealership stating the vehicle was due for factory recommended servicing. i made an appt. the next day, the low battery light came on. called dealership, no response. one and a half weeks later, the battery was dead. called triple a. battery had battery acid and corrosion everywhere. a red solution was sprayed on the battery to prevent leakage. but it didn't work that well. informed dealership at the time of service, that the power steering service light had come on. five days later, i couldn't turn the steering wheel. both service advisors stated that vehicle shouldn't have been placed on lot for sale. i no longer feel safe in this vehicle. as i have two minor children. the date of onset would've been 04/08/2016. there is another photo, however, there was not enough room to include.
Went to go drive the suv while doing only 25 mph & it was raving our 3-5 rpm. while drug in the city
When driving the vehicle on the highway or when accelerating the inside of the vehicle smells of rotting eggs. from time to time it is smelt when sitting at and idling. this has been an ongoing problem with our 2011 ford explorer.
While driving and especially after, there is a burning hair smell that is in the car and when you step outside the car it is very strong in the engine. upon learning of the class action lawsuit too late, it helped make sense why i was smelling the "burnt hair" smell when i ran the heater and/or ac. this was anytime i drove the car whether highway driving or around town.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford explorer. while driving, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to jones ford casa grande (1932 n pinal ave, casa grande, az 85122, (520) 836-3100) where it was diagnosed that the engine block was mixing with the oil. the vehicle was repaired. on another occasion, the power steering was locking consistently, and the interlock and advancetrac warning indicators illuminated. the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the same dealer and was repaired again. the contact stated that the power assist warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the same dealer where the gears and alignment were reset. the contact also mentioned that the check engine warning indicator continued to illuminate. the vehicle was taken back to the same dealer where it was determined that an unknown part needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure continued. the contact stated that the fuel filter neck assembly also needed to be replaced. the evaporator canister was replaced and the technician informed the contact that the fuel tank was leaking fuel. the vehicle was not repaired because the fuel tank was no longer manufactured by ford. the contact stated that the vehicle remained at the dealer and was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was approximately 48,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford explorer. the contact stated that the valve cover was allowing oil to travel through a tube into the air filter. the dealer (townsend sales and service, 340 main st, townsend, ma 01469) stated that ford redesigned the valve cover, which would eliminate the failure. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
Have extensive engine damage due to water pump failure with no warning! i was driving my vehicle down a main highway and all of a sudden the "engine coolant overtemp" came on then "low oil pressure" and my vehicle shut down! i couldn't drive the vehicle. luckily i drifted to side of the road so that my car could be towed without having an accident! shop determined water pump failure and water leaked into my engine poor engine design on fords part) and destroyed the engine with no warning! no engine light came on or anything. please investigate this. there are numerous complaints about this same situation. i called ford to complain but all they did was take down my compliant. this is a safety issue because i was driving in traffic and this could have caused an accident. the whole car just shut down! *tr
We have exhaust in the passenger compartment when climbing a hill or at a traffic stop when the engine is running, we notice the problem when under accelaration and while using the heater/ac. will open the window when stopped with the car ideling to lessen the smell. have complained to ford but have had nothing done. there is a technical bulliten on the valve cover with a replacement part but ford has not recalled it and will not fix the problem.
Upon heavy acceleration such as when pulling onto a highway, or passing another vehicle on the road, an exhaust/fuel smell will enter the vehicle and be very noticeable to everyone in the vehicle. this occurs mostly when the air conditioner is on, on recirculation. my wife (primary driver of this 2011 ford explorer) complains of a lot of headaches and i am beginning to wonder if she is getting carbon monoxide poisoning from driving this vehicle daily. we are going to buy a co2 detector to see if this is in fact true.
My 2011 ford explorer lost power even though the engine did not die there was no power when pressing on gas pedal. the yellow wrench light came on the panel. i turned the ignition off and waited a few minutes and it restarted. i took it to a dealer and they couldn't get anything to register. i picked the car up anyd before i made it home it lost power again. i took it back in and they still couldn't get anything to register. they replaced the ba sensor fir $500 since my air filter was dirty and could be the cause of problem. a week later the car stopped again. it happened again a few days later and then it stalled 4 times in one day and the engine light came on and stayed. i borrowed a code reader and the code p2111 appeared. i googled this and it shows throttle body. each time i lost power it did not die but ran rough. when i restarted it was a little hesitant to start. at first it happened when i accelerated after going at a low speed but then it happened while traveling 70 mph.
Exhaust fumes enter the passenger compartment when the ac is running at highway speeds and at any speed when the engine is taxing ie going up a steep grade.
Bad burning smell under acceleration to highway speed coming from air vents. oil was found in the air filter housing and piping near mass air flow sensor.
Long story short, i pulled out of my neighborhood got about a quarter of a mile down the road. heard the drive belt squeal for about 15 seconds, followed by check engine light, and extreme engine knock. the vehicle was shut off immediately. the codes read, crankshaft/camshaft correlation bank a sensor 1, the second code was engine knock. vehicle towed to the dealer were they had 2 of their top technicians look at the vehicle and the both reported the water pump had failed and filled the engine up with coolant which cause the engine to expire. my wife only had the truck for 2 years and she's very careful driver. no woarning signs of a failing water pump. just got back from a 7hr road trip a week before the water pump failed and the engine expired.
I want to state that my truck does the same thing as reported in this problem. the smells gets real bad in the cabin when entering highway or crossing vehicles nhtsa action number: pe16008 component(s): engine and engine cooling , structure
I was leaving my house pulling a kayak trailer with one kayak on it, went about a half block and the engine slowed down and the ford explorer would hardly move. was able to go around the block and make it back to my driveway. after stopping and restarting the problem was gone. i had the ford explorer towed to the dealer were i bought it, they checked it and said it didn't show a error code on the computer and drove it twice and could not make it happen so there was nothing they could do. i researched the problem and found out it is the electronic throttle body and they have changed over one million of them. both you and ford are aware of the problem but a recall was never issued. also once this happens it will happen again until the problem is fixed. i have a vehicle with 38 thousand miles on it that is unsafe to drive and cannot get it fixed.
I purchased my vehicle in march of 2016. i first had issues with the braking system. i heard screeching and whirring as i drove the vehicle. next, i had issues with the battery, battery acid leaked all over the battery, corrosion built up on the battery. most recently, after servicing my vehicle, the power steering locked up. the computer read that there was power steering fault. i don't understand how i was able to purchase a vehicle off the dealership lot with all of the issues that the vehicle had.

Strong engine exhaust smell in vehicle cabin while driving, during engine operation above 3000-3500 rpm with windows closed and climate control on. outside air on or off seems to make no difference.
Under hard acceleration i get a sting odor in the cabin. it is like an exhaust smell inside the car. it always does it above 3500 rpm.
After hard acceleration and let up exhaust smell gets in the compartment to the point you have roll the windows down to clear it out ford has tried to fix it they have a service.
I sent my vehicle in two months for to be fix at drew ford dealership. they also corrected a recall on the powersteering fault. now the fault is back and the steering wheel is immovable or extremely hard to move. they also claim this will not fall under the recall, because it has been remedy the first time. i am very upset with ford, because this can be a 600-2000 dollar repair. power steering should not go this fast, my car is barely 4 years old. i may have to trade it in for more reliable vehicle like a honda or toyota. i want to support american companies. this experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth. *tr
This is a major safety concern. while driving an indication of a malfunction in the awd system shows on the dashboard & sync computer. the engine loses complete power and you must pull over and restart the vehicle to reset the on-board computer. this loss of power happens on the highway and is at great risk of causing serious issues to other traffic. not to mention when i have my child in the vehicle. i have taken it to rosner ford dealership in king george va (they couldn't find a issue 4 four times now). it happens with frequent and unregular intervals. i have repeatedly went back to the dealership to fix. the ford motor company (through my experience with the service dept) seems as if they don't care even when i expressed the safety concern. i believe the computer problem is a bigger thing than realized. hopefully this will help in getting add to the complaint list so ford will fix the problems. As i was merging on to the highway, i accelerated to reach the same speed of the traffic. the engine revved over 3500 rpm. my air conditioner was on and set to recirculate the air. shortly after merging onto the highway, i smelled exhaust fumes in the cabin of my car. *tr
Driving down the interstate at 70mph, warning comes on the console "awd is off" and the engine is down to idle speed (~800 rpm). pressing the accelerator results in no speed increase, forcing me to move across 4 lanes of traffic to the emergency lane with only the brakes working (no control over my speed, otherwise). pulled over, stopped the engine, looked around and could see no externally visible problems (fluid leaks, etc.). start the car and there are no warnings, so i continue down the road, but this time stay in the right lane and keep the speed to around 60. less than 1 mile down the road, the exact same thing happens. at this point we call ford to get us a tow. this was a very dangerous event to happen, especially when i had the explorer full with my family! today the servicing dealer called and said it is a problem with the throttle body. being that this is the 2nd time our 2011 explorer has left us stranded on the side of the road, it was time to go searching for others with this same throttle body problem. turns out there is a customer satisfaction notice already being done by ford for several other 2011 vehicles, but the explorer has been excluded. our symptoms and part failure are exactly the same as these other models, some even from the same assembly plant. i think ford needs to extend the 13n03 program to included the explorers. thank you. *js
Smell of exhaust fumes inside the cabin when accelerating hard (ie, to merge on the freeway etc). have noticed the issue since we first bought it (used) in 2013).
While driving the car dies and the yellow wrench light appears. this occurred twice in one day. the first time it occurred i was just beginning to accelerate. i was able to pull over and restart the car. the second incident occurred while driving down the highway. i was able to pull over and restart the car. i immediately brought it to a ford dealer who has had the car for three days and cannot find out what is wrong. *js
During hard acceleration onto a highway or from a stop, the interior of the vehicle fills with the odor of exhaust fumes. this occurs every time and is not random. *tr
