Wasn't able to get the shifter out of park, managed to get someone to help me put in neutral to get the car home, now i have been driving it for a month or so by not putting in park, just keeping it in neutral with emergency brake on. would love to get this resolved with out having to spend money that i don't have. it seems that it is a known problem for years now and yet no one has issued dodge any notice to submit a recall for this. most people don't have time and money to be dealing with these types of problems, so they end up in the same situation as i am having to spend more time securing the car so it doesn't injure anyone and at the same time keep me employed. please help me i am low income and a mother of 3, i can't afford to get something repaired when dodge is aware that there is a on going problem with this, if there is so many people complaining about the same issue it makes it obvious that it's not a accidental or a a things happen type of problem it means it is a manufacture problem. just saying that they need to stand behind there product and stop ignoring the facts. they need to do the right thing and issue a recall as any honorable business would.

After filling my car with gas it runs rough and stalls several times while moving. after restarting it several times it seems ok until the next time i fill the gas again. when it stalls it sounds like the drivetrain is messing up. it does this city highway turning or straight. this has been happening regularly for at least 6 weeks only right after filling and sporadically for about 4 months or more.
No1 head lights and dash lights flicker and go on and off continuely.when driving. no2 steping on brakes at a light shuts down the engine.

There are multiple complaint's online about the shifter problem associated with this vehicle. after contacting chrysler about this they said the vehicle is not under recall and that the following year magnum shifting problem was. when i can find over 300 complaints online about my year vehicle experiencing the same problem. it will not shift out of the park into any gears.
The car will not shift out of park. the shift interlock latch is defective. there is a recall on many other similar cars. recall k39. our car should be included in that recall.
I was stopped at light. the light turned green. i pressed the accelerator pedal. something exited the passenger side of engine block causing a large hole. catastrophic engine failure ensued. i turned the ignition to the off position. i turned the hazard lights on. i coasted to the nearest side road where i stopped the vehicle. i finished my morning coffee waiting for a tow truck there were no accidents, crashes, fires or injuries other than that done to my hemi pride.
while driving down the highway or sitting in park, the bas light on the dash will come on, when it does this the engine goes to 800 rpm idle and the transmission goes into neutral, rendering of the vehicle in capable of driving until the vehicle comes to a complete stop, is placed in park, ignition shut off and restarted. then you can operate the vehicle again until the next time it does this, which may be one minute or a week. this is extremely dangerous as it is happening to me going down the highway a couple of times, at which time i have to pull over to the shoulder shut the vehicle off restart the vehicle and then try to pull away. twice i've almost been hit by semi tractor-trailers as the vehicle is coasting with no power. please help me, i am in fear for my life if i drive this vehicle.
When driving or sitting still the bas light comes on, car goes to 800 rpm idle and transmission goes into neutral. car cannot be driven until i come to a stop, put car into park and turn ignition off. vehicle can then be restarted and driven again until it does this again, either a minute later or a month later. this is very dangerous when driving in traffic and i have almost been hit by tractor trailers while trying to pull over and go again. air bag light has been on since i bought car and dealer will not fix it.
The car shuts down to a crawl . can't get any codes from it. first time it happened was on the highway pulled to the side of the road and restarted ran fine for the rest of the day. getting worst every since now sitting in the driveway no codes afraid to put the family in it.i think dodge discontinued because they can't keep up with the problems

After filling up the car with gas it stalls and you lose steering and brake control, very dangerous and my wife is now scared to drive the car. stalling went away after an hour trying to get home. next morning seemed to run fine. next fill up did the same thing. this problem is going to cause deaths for sure if it has not already. contacting the dealer asap to see if they have others with same issue. *tr
Transmission fly wheel teeth was broken on both sides of the fly wheel cause it to start funny and miss starting. *tr
Attempted to drive vehicle, could not get shifter out of park...completely stuck. looked on the internet only to find thousands of others with same issue. i .called dealer for apt, they knew right away what the problem was...apparently an issue with dodge challenger, magnum and chrysler 300. totally unacceptable that i had to pay 378.00 at the dealer for a known issue...the pink thingy it is called. a plastic piece that breaks...this should be a recall, i could have been stranded who knows where...and the advise on the internet as self repair is scary and potentially dangerous. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge magnum. the transmission shift interlock lever fractured. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for servicing and the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 110,000.
The transmission (gear shift) was stuck in park. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and i, as owner was notified that there was no recall on my year of vehicle. there was a recall on years 2008-2010. then i had to pay $287.00 for labor costs and $12.97 for the part. $301.01 total. i strongly feel i should be reimbursed. please contact me as soon as possible to resolve this matter. i am an elderly woman and i live on a fixed income. i feel this matter should fall under the recall for safety purposes. *tr
Chrysler vehicles, dodge magnum, dodge charger and chrysler 300 have an issue that causes the shifter to get stuck in park, and will not shift. this leaves many drivers stranded causes them to need towing assistance to have the vehicle moved. i was stuck and needed a tow and the tow truck driver informed me that mine was the sixth one he had done that day. my insurance company informed me that this was a very common problem with the chrysler vehicles. the issue happens to many vehicles most of which were not covered under chryslers k39 recall. chrysler did some maneuvering to get out of covering all the cars affected with the issue. the issue is for a faulty part in the shifter assembly of cars from 2005-2007. they got out of covering all of the cars by narrowing the recall to specific vehicles made in a specific location instead of covering all vehicles with the faulty part. kind of like committing fraud. they seem to be able to get away with it because there are no child safety or death related issues. *tr
Driving a car that stops running with no warning is very dangerous. i can not believe there is not a recall for this problem. *tr
After many conversations with chrysler associates, and many internet searches...there is an on going problem with the 2005 dodge magnum awd systems. apparently dodge used a friction disk setup in the transfer case, after time the left over debris and minerals clog the disks and cause a horrible shutter at low speeds during "parking lot maneuvers." this issue was resolved in later years, but i see it ridiculous that just about every 2005 awd is affected by this and this is listed as a tsb and not a recall. since dodge will cover this under their power train warranty i see this as a ridiculous request to make people pay the service charge to have the clutch pack removed and have the fluids changed, when the chrysler corporation feels it was and issue enough to cover it under there power train warranty. *tr
Drove vehicle for about 30 minutes at 70f ambient. turned off vehicle and was away from it for about 10 minutes. restarted engine and it had little if any compression and made a bad metal banging sound when started. engine destroyed. dealership analysis revealed #3 intake valve seat fell out of head and destroyed #3 piston and cylinder requiring a new engine. vehicle has 91,000 miles. *tr
Tl - the contact owns a 2005 dodge magnum. the contact stated that he vehicle failed to shift out of park. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that the park pawl anchor shaft had fractured and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offered any assistance since the vehicle was not included in recall nhtsa campaign number: 05v460000 (power train). the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 41,403 and the current mileage was 41,423. pm *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge magnum. the contact stated that the gear lever failed to shift out of park. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the interlock switch was replaced at the owner's expense. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number 05v460000 (power train) however, the vin was not included. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 67,000.
went out to start the car on 11/7/13 and could not get the shift out of park. called the dodge dealer and he knew exactly what was wrong. called a tow truck and the owner said that he also knew what was wrong and that his small towing service had towed hundreds of chrysler / dodge cars with the same exact problem. i checked on the internet and found hundreds of complaints similar to my problem - cannot get out of park. i also called chrysler customer service and was told that they knew of the problem, but that my particular vehicle was not covered - only certain vin's are covered. if there are 100's of cars just in my small location, there must be 1000's, if not tens of thousands affected vehicles nation wide. i will also mention that the manual override for the shifter did not work, so my car had to be dragged onto the tow truck. i feel that this is not only a costly problem for car owners, but a safety issue as well. what if you put the car in park while you were in the middle of traffic and then could not move? i could list other situations as well - all safety issues. i would ask that a total recall of all vehicles effected be issued. thanks. *tr
Just bought the car, filled up the fuel tank at gas station and went for a drive. at the first stop light i came to the car stalled while slowing down to stop coasted to a stop and restarted the engine after a few attempts, resumed driving and it was driving ok got onto the on-ramp to drive on the highway and it stalled again while merging into traffic same problem occurred several times until the fuel level went down after driving. *tr

1). on 7-31-13, i got into my car and started it in my driveway, the shift knob would not come out of park position. i called aaa to tow it to finnegan dodge in rosenberg, tx. the dealer replaced shift assembly. paid $390.36. since then, car still will not come out of park to go into gear most of the time. i have to pump brake pedal about 4 to 5 times before it would go into gear. 2) received airbag recall and called finnegan dodge, and dropped off vehicle on 6-22-15. mileage was 82,058. dealer stated they replaced driver airbag inflater and tested the system. i picked up car on 6-23-15 and the passenger airbag warning light started coming on at any given time whether there was a passenger or not. i did not have these problems until airbag work was done. called several times and said someone will call back, but never did. i called on 7-24-15, and they scheduled me to bring the car back on 8-5-15. hopefully, they won't charge me for their mess-up. updated 09/14/15. *jb updated 08/04/16. *jb

Vehicle stuck in park. vehicle is a 2005 dodge magnum sxt. tow truck operator and auto repair individuals stated that this is due to the transmission shifter interlock lever breaking as it made of plastic. comments were "this happens all the time in dodge and chryslers" as "i see this quite frequently". a recall was issued (recall k39) for various years, makes, and models of dodge and chryslers but not for the 2005 magnum sxt even though recall k39 applies to 2005 magnum lxs. why doesn't the recall apply to the 2005 dodge magnum sxt when it applies to the same year and make? what criteria is applied for a recall to be issued? is there a certain threshold of incidents or complaints that must be reached prior to a recall being issued? since this defect is so frequent, prevalent, and well known in the auto repair industry why has no action been initiated? *tr
Daimler issued a satisfaction notification k39 regarding the transmission interlock lever" on chrysler letterhead it states "the transmission gear shift lever interlock return spring hook may break. a broken interlock return spring hook will result in the inability to move the gear shift lever out of park. as of this morning 06/19/13 @ 1119 (est) i contacted chrysler @(800)853-1403 and spoke with [xxx]-ep765 regarding this matter. according to [xxx] the recall was vin specific yet and still thousands of vehicles manufactured by daimler are experiencing the same issues to which daimler has been allowed to minimal to remedy. i executed due diligence and went to a local dealership to purchase the part on saturday prior to being enlightened and was informed: daimler recalled all the original pink parts internally and forwarded newly constructed parts with better springs. if this is not an admission the product part was faulty and requires recalling, i am unsure how much plainer this needs to be. i also had someone from dodge inform me, my vehicle has 110k it was bound to happen and should have gone out earlier?! maybe daimler prior to selling their vehicles include a disclosure which says something like: " the parts used to build your vehicle may be defective and should this occur we at daimler will selectively elect which vin numbers are serviced based on what will satisfy our bottom line and federal guidelines. should you still choose to purchase this vehicle please sign below" daimler needs to be accountable to correct this problem on all vehicles instead of being sneaky and only addressing what could be considered as a handful in the grand scheme of things.... accountability. if we intently sold anything faulty the charge would be intent to defraud. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge magnum. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle went into default mode and decelerated to 30 mph. the vehicle was pulled over and the engine was turned off. the vehicle was restarted and the shifter would not move out of the park position. the contact manually released the shifter to the drive position. the vehicle was taken to numerous mechanics, but was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the issue. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 135,000.
I was driving down the street and the car stopped going i let it sit for awhile and it went a little then stopped i had to tow it to a transmission shop and they said that water got into transmission because of the way the water flows from the radiator to trans to cool it. transmission fluid was mixed in water and water in transmission so i had to replace both and clean entire system out. i also am having problems with my headlights staying on at night they keep going on and off while i am driving i see this too is an ongoing problem and a safety issue. *tr
After filling up at a gas station, i drove the car approximately 1/2 mile and the car stopped at a traffic light. this has happened to me probably a dozen times since march of this year. it does not happen after every fill up, probably every 4 times it happens. *tr
I have had at least 3 of the issues of the complaints i am seeing here and wondering why there has been no recalls issued: 1) car would not accelerate or it would die after filling up the gas tank. went on line and found others having similar problem. fix: do not fill your gas tank up all the way and also do not let it get too close to empty. 2) neither the back hatch or the hood will stay up on their own. have been hit in the head with the back hatch numerous times - sometimes it works. 3) could not get car out of park. again went on line and even found a youtube video explaning how to remove the pink thingy from the gear counsel and all will be ok. saved hundreds of dollars but now no safety due to the fact that car can be turned off in all gears. *tr
I purchased this vehicle brand new in 2005. three months after the purchase, the car would not shift out of park. the vehicle was still under warranty at this time. six years later, the car has done the same thing again. after a quick research of google, yahoo, and youtube, i noticed that thousands of people are having the same problem. a recall is not in place for my vehicle but is in place for others with the same shifter and make that was told to me by the dealership. a recall should be in place. please look into this matter. *jb
The car, after filling with gas, suddenly stalled while driving down a main road. i had to stop in the middle of the road, put the car in neutral, restart it, put the car in drive, wait 2 seconds or so for the transmission to re-engage, and then i could move again. a truck slammed into the back of the car after it came to it's jerky stop and the oncoming truck didn't realize a person would be stopped in front of him where there was no light or stop sign. i found out later, from a car forum, that the 5.7 liter dodges have a rash of issues where the check valve that is part of the fuel tank fails and causes the emission system to get wet and the computer gets confused signals causing the car to stall (shortly after filling the tank). i found out that it would cost at least $1000 to change the entire gas tank as the only fix to the problem. i can't believe there isn't a recall for this dangerous problem. luckily the damage in the crash wasn't severe although i suffered from whiplash as a result. *tr
After starting my car, i attempted (without success) to shift out of park. the transmission shift interlock lever (as chrysler calls it) had broken and locked the shifter in park. i fortunately had tools in the back and was able to disassemble the center console and get the car moving again. i was told by friends that chrysler had issued a recall for this problem, and was forwarded a copy of chrysler's customer satisfaction notification k39, which describes exactly what had happened to me. i took the car to the dealer for repair, and was told my car was not covered under the recall. i am still trying to get chrysler to cover the repairs, as it is a seemingly very common issue with the lx platform. *tr
The car is stuck in park. after reading several forums from other consumers with the same make, model and year, this seems to be a problem for alot of consumers. other dodge models had a recall so i don't understand why there isn't a recall for the dodge magnum. *tr
Had complete transmission failure driving on highway at 50 m.p.h. engine light came on followed by loud high pitch noise from engine compartment. car jerked to a full stop. tried to move shift selector to get car to move, no help. disconect battery to reset system. able to get a gear to get car 2 miles to home. have car towed to shop. 7days later, and $3800.00 out of wallet, have new transmission. 63,000 miles and tranny fails? got to be kidding me!!!! this seems to be a problem for dodge. car should be declared a lemon so people can recover some of the out of warrenty cost!!!!!!!!! *tt
I had the exact same experience as documented below - i found this on your web site and decided to add my complaint to the list. my 2005 dodge magnum would not shift out of park. it has 77,854 miles on it. i was stranded in a culver's restaurant drive through, obstructing their business. i could not move my running vehicle. this is a widely known issue, and chrysler even issued a customer satisfaction notification k39 (www.chrysler.com/webselfservice/pdf/k39.pdf) directly related to this exact same problem. i went into the dealer to get the expected repair, and was also told my car didn't fall under the recall and thus wasn't covered. they offered to fix it for $450. i said no. i contacted chrysler's customer assistance hotline, and eventually they offered to fix it if i pay a $100 co-pay. i also rejected this offer. the part that fixes this problem is sold by napa and another online company because the problem is so widespread. forum posts everywhere mention this problem. google "pink thingy". it is the part that breaks inside the shifter - called the transmission shift interlock lever. this is a safety concern. once the pink thingy is broken, you have to remove it in order to drive your vehicle. now, the vehicle can be moved out of park without pressing in the brake pedal! this is a horrible safety concern if you have kids! chrysler must expand the recall to cover all the other cars supposedly not covered by the k39 recall! the contact owns a 2005 dodge magnum. the contact stated that the shifter would not shift out of park. as a result, the contact could not operate the vehicle. the contact noticed the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 2d (power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift). the dealer informed the contact that the model year of the vehicle was not included in the recall. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge magnum. the contact stated that the vehicle would not shift out of park. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the gear shift mechanism failed. the contact was also advised that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number: 05v460000 (power train:automatic transmission). the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and reiterated that the vehicle was not included in the recall. the failure mileage was 100,000.
My car is stuck in park and it appears it will be the same problem as many other folks. the geico customer service person even said many cars were being recalled because of this plastic piece that was being changed to metal. apparently, many are breaking down! i will never by another dodge. *tt
Car will not shift out of park. when you depress the brake pedal, there is a spring attached to a clip that moves in order for you to be able to shift out of park. the clip usually brakes (about 50-60k miles) and then you cannot shift out of park. you have to manually press a button at the front of the shift box in order to be able to shift out of park. this is a common occurrence on chrysler and dodge cars. i also have a 2008 chrysler pacifica and the same happened. this is a very common occurrence. this should be a recall. it affects various chrysler/ dodge cars different years. *tr
