Recently reported ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING problems on 1999 Dodge Intrepid

1999 dodge intrepid with 2.7l engine 74960 miles, oil changes every 3000 miles, and now the engine has to be replaced. found websites with a lot of complaints about the same problem. there should be a recall. the dealer told me it would be $9000.00 to replace and install new engine, which is worth more than the car. need money to fix. car is going to sit until something is done. don't let this happen to anyone else. just search the internet and find how many people there is out there with the same problem. thank you. *jb

The vehicle stalled while driving. the vehicle was towed to the dealer, who determined that cause of the failure was due to sludge in the engine, and installed a new engine. *ak *ph the vehicle would not shift due to a faulty transmission output speed sensor. *nm

1999 dodge intrepid with 2.7l engine, purchased may of 2002 with 59,000 miles. oil changed every 3000 to 5000 miles. in may of 2003, motor "blew" while driving due to sludge build up in motor. in september 2003, purchased 2003 a intrepid also with 2.7l engine, drove for three days when check engine light came on. returned to dealer, car spent 45 days in shop having 1 head, 1 injector, 1 piston, 1 rod replaced. dealer refused to replace entire engine or to purchase the car back. have found several web sites on "bad" dodge 2.7l engines from 1998 to present. *la

I own a dodge intrepid that is only 4 years old and when driving down the road the engine ceased. i had it towed to a repair shop and called chrysler who informed me the warranty expired, but with a fairy new car, i feel the engine should not have went. the only way they will talk to me about it is if i take it to a dealership at my expense and have it looked at. this is at a cost of $500.00 and they told me chrysler most likely will not pay and that i would be out the money and have a basket full of parts. i feel the company should stand by their products and take some consideration of the customer. as i stated to them :they have my $22,000.00 and i have no working car to show for it. this car stopped at a busy intersection putting my daughter who was driving in serious jeopardy. *nlm

Purchased a 1999 dodge intrepid in 2002, which was a program car and it only had 10,000 miles on it at around 65,000 miles i had to replace the dual overhead cam chains. one year later the engine began to knock and then seized up. this vehicle has been sitting in my yard since 2003. i have all the records in which we had the oil changed every 3,000 miles and the repairs for the timing chains. this vehicle rides nice, drives nice, but the 2.7 litre engine is a piece of crap and because it is a piece of crap no one wants to work on them and suggest that the vehicle is not worth as much as it would cost to repair it. i feel that the chrysler corporation should be held accountable for putting such a crappy motor in such a nice vehicle. *tr

At just over 73000 miles knocking sound began from engine. i stopped driving and took to mechanic, i was informed motor was shot and would need complete rebuild. car had been serviced since purchase according to chrylser recommendations. as i contacted service & salvage shops to explain my need, they (5 different shops) started telling me the problem before i could finish. said 2.7 motor was defect from factory. i had to have complete engine rebuild at cost of $3000 as i could not afford to buy another motor. i contacted dealer about problem and they said they never heard of this. said they would look into it and get back with me and never did. from what i have been told there is a problem with the 2.7 engine and everyone seems to be aware of it but chrylser.

3/6/03 - engine noise, oil & engine lights on, stalling. dealer replaced sensors, did tune up. 4/7/04 - car towed to dealer - told engine replacement required at cost of over $6,000 - $7,000. car 3 years, 8 months old with 60,000 miles. *nlm

History includes blown transmission sensor, failure on the very first year inspection for brake rotors, driver's side window sticks in up position, intermittent heat control button not functioning properly, noisy when turning in front strut area, keyless remote does not function properly and now the worst of it. one month ago, took car in with oil and engine lights flashing, ticking noise from engine, stalling out. dealer did electronic sensors repairs and tune up costing $500. one month later, car had to be towed back to dealer with loud banging in engine. repair bill of over $6,000 to fix a car i've owned 3 years, 8 months and 60,000 miles. 2.7 l engines are blowing in these cars all the time making it next to impossible to purchase a used one to do repairs myself. one used car parts place said they have a waiting list. recall anyone???!! *nlm

While driving 30 mph consumer heard a loud noise coming from the front of the vehicle. suddenly the vehicle stalled. vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that sludge was found inside the engine, and engine needed to be replaced. *ak

1999 dodge intrepid 2.7 l total engine failure. the engine started clicking then loss power and seized while on a highway. dealer said the engine needed to be replaced, even though engine was clean. chrysler denied claim. known problem with the 2.7 liter engines. *jb

Abnormal premature consumption of oil. first noticed around 40,000 miles and has steadily progressed to current 1 quart per 1,500 mile of oil consumption at 68,000 miles. chrysler refused to correct the problem and indicates that it is normal for their engines to burn oil. *nlm

While driving the engine completely shut down at 48383 miles. *nlm

The engine blew suddenly and with no apparent cause. *nlm

My 1999 intrepid died in traffic, not to start again. i had my 3 month old granddaughter with me. i had a very hard time controling the vehicle with no power. thank god they people around me slowed up and stayed behind me as i tried to get it to the curb.the mechanic said the engine blew at 43,000 miles. nothin but sludge in it.*ak

Engine blew for "no apparent reason". warranty will not cover a replacement due to the mysterious appearance of sludge. i had my oil changed regularly and maintained my vehicle properly. i have already replaced the transmission, various sensors and visited the dealer 3 times to correct an oil leak. i was never diagnosed with an engine problem until it finally shut down. while driving approximately 45 mph on the highway, the engine started to make a loud noise and rattled continuously. this was very surprising, considering the vehicle was normally a quiet ride. the shop told me my engine was blown and the warranty company denied my claim. i am still financing this vehicle and do not have the 6,500.00 to replace this engine. i see numerous complaints on this site and others about the 2.7 liter engines. there should definitely be a recall. *jb

i have a 1999 dodge intrepid, 2.7 liter engine, 65000 miles on vehicle. the vehicle has been properly maintained. timing belt broke on vehicle and it was towed to a chrysler/dodge dealer for repairs. mechanic began to disassemble motor and found a black sludge inside engine - said it looked as if the motor oil had never been changed. this vehicle has been properly maintained. i was then informed the motor would need to be replaced. i have contacted several mechanics for repair estimates - which range from $4500.00-$7000.00. one person i spoke with said that a "jasper" replacement motor was available that has fixed the design problem with the oil. i am trying to find information regarding this motor. from the website i was reviewing, intrepid.clan-510.org this sludge is a problem not typically encountered, but it seems to be more common with the intrepid. another motor replacement business, i contacted, said they were getting requests for the 2.7 liter motor every day and said repairs would be $7000.00. do you have any information on problems associated with this motor? can you provide me with contact information? *jb

1999 chrysler intrepid engine failure due to oil sludge after maintaining regularly scheduled oil changes. *nlm

The consumer pulled into a fueling station and without warning the vehicle stalled. the dealer examined the vehicle, and found that a new engine was needed. the dealer never explained to the consumer what the problem was. *ak *sc *jb

1999 dodge intrepid, 5 star dealer maintained has experienced engine failure at 60389 miles. have spoken with many others that have experienced this problem. according to an engine rebuild shop the failure is caused by poor design of the engine. excessive sludge builds up and eventually starves the engine for oil resulting in bearing failure and/or broken connecting rods. another engine rebuilding service claims that rebuilding is a waste of money and the rebuilt engine is doomed to failure. *jb

Bearings went bad even with regular maintenance and oil changes. mileage is long distance mileage. of all the cars and various makes of cars we have had (other dodges, chevrolets, oldsmobiles, fords, hondas) we have driven long distance high mileage and and provided regular mintenance and never had to replace a motor. in our research on replacing this motor, we have been told by various mechanics and auto parts stores that the 2.7l motor was known to give problems.

We replaced the #6 injector and the fuel pump. shortly thereafter the car stopped altogether. we had to have it towed to the dealer to have him tell us that it has a broken timing chain and it would probably cost us $5700 to replace the engine. we had it towed home.

I bought a 99 dodge intrepid from freedom ford in centre, alabama for a little over $14,000 about a year and a half ago. i went back last summer to trade in and was told that it was not even black booked for half that. since then i have had to replace the cooling system (the entire system), all the fuses, the sensory module, the tie rods are shot and now the motor has locked up. several mechanics have looked for a motor and found that the motor for this particular year of intrepid runs $1,500 to $2000 more than all other motors, even the 2001 and newer models run $1000 to $1200 at the most. their rejection to help me is due to the fact that the 99 model was an experimental motor and very few were made. i teach school and have found a co-worker whose sister has experienced the same problems. her husband contacted chrysler and after arguing with them, they paid for half of his motor, which knocked his total expense within the normally motor replacement cost. i was given a flat no from chrysler and was told that they only honor this for original car owners with less than 100,000 miles and have an active warranty. well my friend was a second car owner with more than 110,000 miles, no warranty, and is will to provide the information necessary to prove that he was in my same situation and received assistance in paying for his motor. i also have mechanics who will provide statements that after searching the auctions and hotlines for a motor they found more intrepids on the line with bad motors than any other car, some having as little as 60 and 65 thousand miles. i also have auto parts store owners who suggest that i call chrysler to have them help with the expenses due to the fact that they have helped others. i just get the run around from chrysler with no concern of me having to make a $386 car payment to ford for a piece of junk sitting in my yard, and continue pay $107 a month insurance that has to continued due to state laws.

I have a 1999 dodge intrepid. it has a 2.7 liter motor in it. the motor has failed. the warrenty is out, but from the feed back i have been getting for the last year. the 2.7 liter motors are no good. i'm looking at around $5000.00 to put another motor in it. this price is a quote i got from a shop in skiatook,ok i contacted crysler dodge in 2003 after the motor failed. i was told i had no warrenty which i was aware of and that they had no plans of taking care of the faulty 2.7 liter motor. i filed a complaint at that time. i have filed other complaints to the federal trade commission, cosummer affairs, i spoke to the attorney generals office in oklahoma city, ok they referred me to this site. the federal trade commission referred me to contact crysler dodge again. on feb,18,2004. i spoke to someone in customer service, she would not give me her name, she was very rude. she pulled up the vin number of my car. told me i had no warrenty, i told her i was aware of that. she ask me if i had recieved a recall notice on the front drivers seat. i told her yes but had been unable to take the car in because the motor was bad. i ask her if crysler dodge planned on taking care of the problems with the faulty motors. she said to me very sharply "the company is not going to do anything with the motors. your warrenty is out theres nothening that can be done." i ask her if they still made this motor, she put me on hold. she returned to the phone and said "yes they do" i ask her if crysler dodge made the motor or if they had a outside company make the motor. her reply to me was " i have help you enough and i'm not going to get you that information." i said well i would like that information and i did feel like she needed to get it for me i was a owner of a ...

Complete engine failure at 75000 miles, oil light began to flash on and off engine started to knock loudly vehicle lost all speed and stalled on expressway entrance ramp. this vehicle's oil and filter was changed every 3000 miles yet when the engine was disassembled there was large amounts of sludge through out the it's inside ,and i was told the engine needed to be rebuilt but this is a very expensive thing to do which the dealer told me would cost about $4000.00 this was the cheapest fix. which i do not have the money to repair right now so now i am pay for a car i can not drive. and from all the information that i have read there seems to be a problem with a great many of the 2.7 liter v6 engines installed in this vehicle. the repairs are very costly and time consuming. *nlm

Failure of 2.7 liter dodge intrepid engine at 72,000 miles

This car was purchased used from carmax in september 2002. after 5 months of use, the engine died. the car was not abused, oil changes were performed on a basis recommeded by the manufacturer. (receipts can be provided.) the car was taken to a dodge dealer where the diagnosis was made and we were advised the engine had to be replaced. prices ranged from over 8000.00 for a new engine, $6000.00 for a rebuilt engine and $4000.00 for a used engine from a junk car. the car is sitting unrepaired in a mechanic's field.

The vehicle stalled without warning. *jb

I was driving on the interstate as car started a rattling noise and lost power, and would not start again. the car was towed to dealer, and i was told that the engine was blown at 88,000 miles. there were no working dash lights to alert of any problem. the dealer could not give explanation. the car is under full warranty and oil has been changed regularly. estimated cost 5,000 dollars. *nlm

While driving consumer heard loud noise. vehicle was taken to the mechanic, who determined that engine was defective. *ak

1999 dodge intrepid vin#[xxx] the engine is not good my car was burning oil. i warranty company denied the claimant and jay wolfe dodge advise that it would be $7,000 to $8,000.00 to replace the motor. i can't afford that when i owed $10,000 on the car. the oil was clotting up in bottom of the oil pan. i have receipts where i have always changed my oil. i believe its a problem with dodge motor being bad. i'm out of car and making a car payment and just having a hard time making it because of this car. my payment month is $413.00 that alot of money. dodge need to make it right. i will not never buy a dodge vehicle again. *ak updated 07/25/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

I own a 1999 dodge intrepid with 26,400 miles on it. it has never been in an accident of any type and usually driven 10 miles per day. after 26,000 miles the engine developed a knocking noise. i was informed the roller bearing on the timing change had failed. after paying more than $1,400 for the replacement of the roller bearing and a new timing chain, it was determined that the timing chain problem had damaged one or more of the valves, which required the engine to be torn down and a valve job to be required for an additional cost of $900.00. all of this to a car with only 26,000 miles. 2 weeks after the engine repairs were made the transmission stopped shifting gears.*jb

The timing chain on my 1999 dodge intrepid went out and i only had 76,000 miles on the car. this is a major problem for other people also, as i have been put on a waiting list for one of the parts needed (tensioner). there are 1400 of these parts on back order now, 02-11-03. this indicates a major defect in this part of the engine and a recall is in order. *jb

My wife was driving back from the store when the engine just stop and locked up right in the middle of the highway, she was able to coast the car of the side of the road. we had a mechanic look at it, the reason for the failure was the engine ran out of oil. the oil light never came on, not once, the mechanic could not find out where it went to, but couldn't. i had this car for about 11 months before this and checked the oil on a weekly basis. how could this happen. how could a dodge dealer sell this car. now i'm stuck with an $11,000 paper weight in my drive way. i think dodge should replace my engine and figure out why something went wrong.*ak

My cooling system fan motors both went out and froze up with only 46000 miles on a 1999 dodge intrepid. after further investigation into the problem i found on the internet that several people have had the same problem with their intrepid's. *nlm

1.) there were no real "events" that happened. the engine on my wife's dodge intrepid simply seized (after an oil change). 2.) engine seizure on a dodge intrepid...motor locked up. 3.) chrysler blamed it on us not changing the oil regularly and we had to roll the balance of the car into a new car. *jb

Consumer states that the engine has blown in her auto right at 70,000 miles and 4 years old. she also states that before this happened her auto was making a rattling noise and the check engine light came on, she took it to the dealer and was told that they needed to change the oil. she states that her husband had the oil change, then attempted to drive the auto when it just cut off and would not start. then a mechanic , after checking the auto, told her that her engine was blown.

I have a 1999 intrepid 2.7 liter v6. at 41000 miles the oil light started coming on. i had the cat towed to the dealer and they told me the engine was shot. it had spun a bearing. when the engine was opened up all of the oil had bee turned to sludge which looked like burnt pudding. i leased this car from a dealer as a demo with 21000 miles. i was told it was dealer serviced. i personally serviced it myself per the dodge requirements. there is no way the oil should solidify the way it has. there is a serious design problem with the oil system and the cooling of this aluminum marvel of a motor. dealer quoted $7000 to install used motor. i purchased a remanufactured motor and installed it myself for $3500. dodge should stand behind it's products. i found dealer and factory people of no use to solve this problem which seems rampant with this motor.*ak

I own a 1999 dodge intrepid with a 2.7 liter v6 engine. the car had been well maintained with routine oil changes. with no warning the engine blew at 63,000 miles. we contacted dodge, and were told it was not covered and that our warranty had expired. we now cannot find a motor to fit this car in order to repair it and are stuck paying for something that does not run. it is a financial strain and dodge will not offer us any help or solutions after several contacts. i bought a dodge product in good faith - no car that was treated as well as mine should have a blown engine at 63,000 miles. i believe it was defective. *ak

Dodge intrepid 99,v6-2.7.engine breakdown at 80000k on it.need new engine???????????

The vehicle died, whe i bought the car it had 38,000 mile. all the maitenance has been completed. the mechanic states that a new engine needs to be installed. the vehicle only has 54,000 miles

1999 intrepid started making loud knocking noise in engine. took to dealer and now dealer says that i am lucky i did not denotate the engine. needs whole new engine to the tune of $8000.00. have always maintained engine oil change. not due to that, due to the fact that chrysler put aluminum rods in engine.

Engine started "knocking" at 45,000 miles. always had oil changes in timely fashio (3,000 miles/3 months). cost $3,200 to repair engine.*ak

1999 dodge intrepid 2.7 vin#[xxx], 43,913 miles, transmission sensor went out, $132.84. 9/14/00 75,085 miles, water outlet and transmission lines needed replaced. mechanic informed me the transmission lines were factory installed defective. $582.24. 12/14/01 86,992 miles, timing chain broke, replaced water pump. $1,188.79. 6/14/02. 91,324 miles, transmission speed sensor broke. $350.60. 8/2/02 96,828 miles, dash lights went out. mechanic informed me the dash lights were an internal wiring defect. $223.30. 10/2/02 98,003 miles, cooling fan went out. mechanic informed me this was a factory defect. chrysler had changed the design of the fans so i could not just repair one side of the fan since it was no longer available. $680.35. 10/24/02. 109,754 miles, engine blew, taking starter with it. told by mechanic that chrysler designed the 2.7 engine to be a disposable engine (compared to the 3.2 that year). replaced with used engine. $4174.49. 5/21/03 i had over $7000 in repairs in under a year and a half. while i_x0019_m gravely disappointed in the mechanics of this vehicle, i feel that the fan assembly, transmission lines, and electrical wiring are things that were obviously defective from the start and should be repaired free of charge. additionally, the transmission sensor going out at only 43,913 miles should have been replaced free as well. while it is difficult to prove that i took care of the engine, i have oil change receipts. *nlm information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

On dec 20 2002, the vehicle engine started rapping while traveling apx 60 mph on interstate. it then stopped within 30 seconds with no restart. dealer has replaced engine 20,000 miles prior for same thing. dealer has had the vehicle for 5 business days and has not fixed it. also, history of multiple window failures, multiple fuel gauge failures, multiple a/c failures. ts

Intrepid se 2.7l, automatic transmission, 98,000 miles bought a beautiful 1999 dodge intrepid from a very reputable dealer. i immediately began having problems, like "sensors" needing to be replaced but i thought, eh, at $5,000 i stole this car. after only 2 months of driving the engine seized up while i was in traffic! i was almost rear ended by a car behind me as i crossed an intersection. i had driven this car only about 3000 miles when it locked up on me. during that time i had changed the oil once just like i was supposed to. i did not drive this car hard, i am a very safe driver. after having the car towed at my expense to a mechanic, after running a typical spark, fuel and compression test, i was told by the mechanic that he had to tear the engine completely down to find the problem. after two days the mechanic called and said that the engine was blown, a piston was seized and the exhaust valves were burnt. so i paid $5000 to ryan's engine exchange in colorado springs to get a rebuilt engine, all at my own expense. i bought the new engine in march of 2003, it is now september 2007 and my car just stopped running again! i took it to a mechanic and he says that the cylinder has lost compression and that it is leaking air from a leak test into the intake manifold. bottom line, i need a new engine again! this on a engine that only has 54000 miles on it and which the oil has been changed and maintenance performed religiously by the dealer. i am a single mother of one with one on the way and have no car to drive to work and may lose my job! *jb

Purchased vehicle with approxiametely 500 miles. since buying the car we have had it in for repairs at the dealer 8 times. all repair are to engine and chips in the engine. the most recent, driving down the expressway 60 mph the car shut off. put in neutral and started the car back up. when car started back up there was a loud ticking noise in the front. then the car shut off 3 more time and on the fourth stall would not start back up. when towed to repair shop he indicated the engine would need to be replaced (oil just changed and full). when calling arond for new engine all dealers indicated thoughs engines are very hard to find because everyone is looking for them because a blown engine is a common problem with intrepids. i hope there are more complaints reported so this problem is resolved. i know of 3 intrepid in my area that have the same problem.

Car blew the engine on december 13th. was told back in june i had major engine problem due to oil sludge in the engine. when i produced all my oil changes i was told i should have bought the extended warranty. chrysler offered 50/50 which still has cost me $3600+ to replace my engine. i had taken my car in when it was under warranty for "ticking noises under the hoods". they recentered the transmission and motor mounts, replaced the idler pulley, but it still existed. they claim i could not have driven my car for 3 years with this problem. the #6 bering finally blew out. very upsetting. i was driving the car when it happened.

Engine completely blown due to oil sludge build up. dt
