Recently reported ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING problems on 1999 Dodge Intrepid

I was driving my 1999 2.7 intrepid to the store january 2004 in the morning. my car stalled going 45 mph i was able to bounce it off a curb and bring it to a stop with out any mishaps, but i had my 7 and 5 year old daughters in the car with me and it shook them up pretty good. had it towed to a garage and they told me the engine seized and it was going to cost me 6800.00 to fix it. im laid off from work with little income coming in along with a 300.00 a month car payment on a car that doesnt even run. why? the thing only has 64000 mile on it chrysler is a joke i will never buy another product from them.

In 2002 my 1999 dodge intrepid died on i-80 in sacramento california without any warning, i was able to safely get it off the freeway. the vehicle started again after multiple attempts. i took it directly to the dodge dealership where i had purchased it. they replaced the engine. it was under warranty at that time. in january of 2004 the same problem happened again. except this time my wife was driving the vehicle with my 3 children in it. she was driving south on 395 in reno, nevada. she was luckily able to safely coast it off the freeway. i contacted dodge about the problem and they wouldn't give me any help what so ever. the second engine has about 32000 miles on it. *ak

Consumer complained about engine problems, including the cam shaft sensor and flywheel sensor. once all parts were replaced; however, the engine ran rough, and the oil light came on. the piston rods caused the engine to run rough. a loud knocking noise was heared. eventually, engine shut down. *ak

The engine failed at 15,000 miles. *ak the timing belt "jumped," and the engine was replaced. the cooler lines leaked as well. *sc *jb

The engine on our 1999 dodge intrepid locked up with 90000 miles on it. it appears alot of these cars with the 2.7 engine are having the same problems.*ak

Dt: the contact stated the engine stopped working. while stopping at a red light the engine made a knocking noise. she turned off the engine, and attempted to restart. however, the engine would not restart after several attempts. the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop. the mechanic determined the engine would had to be replaced. *ak

My 1999 dodge intrepid's 2.7 motor failed after hearing a loud ticking from the motor. it was later diagnosed as a timing chain failure from oil sludge buiidup. the motor was rebuilt at a cost of $3,000.00 canadian. i have since had intermittent oil light flashing at idle roughly 20,000 km's after the rebuild without incident. currently the car is still in operation and oil light doesn't come on. the car had 130,000km's at the time of the motor failure and currently has 184,000 km's on it. it was considered out of warranty and no help was offered through calls and letters to chrysler customer service and the canadian president odf daimler chrysler at the time ed brust. i am a chrysler employee and got this website from [email protected], a 2.7 chrysler motor complaint site. thanks for any help, jim kainz. *nm

We purchased a used 1999 dodge intrepid in july 2003. it only had 72,000 miles on it. the previous owners said they hadn't had any problems with the car. i took out a loan against my 401k to purchase the intrepid because my previous vehicle was getting a lot of miles on it and i needed a reliable vehicle to get me to work. well now the engine appears to be locked up and i don't even have the money to get it checked out at the dealer. now i am back to my old reliable 1992 pontiac grand am with over 205,000 miles on it. this dodge motor should of lasted to at least 150,000 miles. i am very disappointed. i thought they had improved there products since the 80's. boy was i wrong.*ak

Engine locked up on 1999 dodge interpid. oil sludge, lost about $6000 for car. only got $100 for trade in. car was 1999, broke in 2003, had less than 100,000 miles.*ak

1999 dodge intrepid. change oil regularly. was on the highway, when the oil lite came on for less than 5 min. then the engine completely locked up. now the dodge dealership is telling me they're not sure, but it apparently looks out of oil. which is obserd! and now of course, they aren't going to do anything, but charge $4800 for a used engine?! *ak

Oil light flashed on the dashboard. this caused the vehicle to shut down. consumer took vehicle to the dealer for analysis, and mechanic noticed that there was sludge in the engine. *ak

1999 dodge intrepid engine failed at 92,000. engine was starving for oil, and broke down with little or no warning (sludge build-up). i have been quoted 6500.00 to fix by auto place. took to dealer, they could only offer approximately 1- 2 grand, and use 4000.00 incentive to help cover cost, but still out 4 grand on loan. called chrysler, and they said they could not help me, because i am way past the 56000 mark. this seems to be a farce, because there are some many people reporting engine failures on the dodge 2.7l engine - same reasons.. sludge. often fail without enough warning to prevent major failure. *ak

Immediate engine failure. engine serviced every 3,000 miles by dodge. mileage was 130,000 mostly highway. *nlm

While driving at 40 mph consumer heard a loud bang then the vehicle lost power steering and brakes. as a result the vehicle hit a curb and came to a complete stop. the dealership indicated that the timing belt broke which caused the loss of power. *ak

I was driving and all of a sudden my 1999 dodge intrepid lost all power. i could not steer or brake. luckily i came to a stop on a curb. *la

Purchased a 1999 dodge intrepid. the motor blew at only 80,000 miles. this is a vehicle that we depend heavily on as a family vehicle. the car could not be fixed. a new motor was hard to find and the cost of the repairs would be more than the car was worth. we simply could not afford to pay $5,000 to replace a motor. a used motor was not much less expensive because so many owners of the dodge intrepid were in the same situation. because of all this, we were forced to buy another vehicle and we still owed 2 more years on the intrepid. this experience has definitely made me lose my faith in the dodge name. as of yet, there has been no effort on the part of dodge to rectify this situation. our family has been deeply hurt financially because of this. *nm

While driving 70 mph the driver suddenly heard a loud noise which came from the engine. it was later determined that the engine seized and blew a rod. the vehicle received regular oil changes and the engine was flushed several times prior to the incident. please provide any additional information. *nm

1999 dodge intrepid 2.7 l engine failure oil had been changed every 3000 miles(i have proof) i was driving 50 mph when engine failed very little warning.*ak

Re:1999 dodge intrepid 2.7 liter engine blow out. i was encouraged by my mechanic after working on my car a number of times to get rid of it, because of the engine trouble. the car is completely incapacitated and it will take over $3,000.00 to fix. i still have payments on the car and the amount to repair the car is more than the car is worth. *jb

While driving home engine seized. also, replaced the transmission. the electric windows worked sporadically except for the driver's window that did not work at all, and the air conditioner heater fan only worked on high.*ak

1999 dodge intrepid engine failure while driving. *ak

Purchased this 1999 dodge intrepid (2.7 l engine) for son 2 months ago with 98,000 miles. ran perfectly for 4000 miles then it wouldn't start. once we got the top end torn down found that one of the timing chain guides had disintegrated, caused the timing chain to jump, and wound up bending all of the intake valves. inspection of the inside of the engine revealed an extreme sludge problem, almost like it was full of tar! after doing some research on the web it appears that this appears to be a problematic engine. the parts guy at dodge dealer indicated (off the record) that these 2.7 engines had problems in hot southern climates due to running hot internally and burning the oil. *la

1999 dodge intrepid 2.7 liter engine failure while driving. vehicle has been well cared for ( oil changes as specified) but engine failed with only 66,000 miles. *la

Engine failure on 1999 intreped. *ak

My 1999 dodge intrepid's engine failed in november 2003 while driving on interstate 55. quotes given to me to fix and/or replace the engine were in the range of $5500 - $8500. this is the 2.7 liter engine; at the time of the engine failure i owed over $6000 on the car, and i am still paying on the loan. the car has been sitting in my garage; this is a common problem with the 2.7 engines, however chrysler will not take responsibility.*ak

Total engine of our 2.7l dohc engine in our 1999 dodge intrepid while driving down the road at a speed of 45mph resulting in costly bills that were made at the owner's expense.*ak

Without warning our 1999 intrepids engine froze, luckily my wife had just turned into a driveway when it happened. dealer said that the timing chain had broken and warped the valves (everyone of them) and that they would have to be replaced. they accused us of not changing the oil regularly which caused sludge to biuld up. the oil was changed every 3000 to 4000 miles. this $1777.00 repair caused us undue stress because of medical bills. we did not have the money to repair it and chrylser refused to help. this was our only means of transportation so we had to borrow tha money from a family member, or not be able to get to work. this on top of making the payments. *ak

I have had to replace the timing chain on the engine at 55310 miles for a cost of $2,372.28. now the oil light is on and i have a knocking in the engine do to oil sludge . i have had two mechanics tell me that the engine needs to be either replaced with a used engine(which will result in the same problem at a cost of $3,000) replace the engine with a jasper engine (supposedly has engine engineering problem resolved at a cost of $6,000) or a crank shaft and bearing job at a cost of $3,000 which will still result in the same problem down the line. *jb

1999 dodge intrepid 4 door sedan, equipped with 2.7 liter v-6 engine, and automatic transmission. at approximately 69,500 miles traveling at 60 mph on interstate highway, and dash oil light came on. had to travel three miles on highway to reach a safe exit. engine started to make ticking sound which increased in volume. engine finally seized while coasting to off ramp. no injuries, no vehicle fire. vehicle towed to dodge dealer and diagnosed as "engine failure." mechanic reported appears to be "some sludge" high in engine, seen through oil filler hole in valve cover. dealer advised there is a factory rebuilt short block available from daimler chrysler for $6750 plus tax. would still have to pay for dressing short block with valve covers, oil pan, throttle body, fuel rail, accessory drives, etc from my old failed engine to make a complete engine. he also said "may be able to get a used engine from a salvage yard for $3500-$4000 but would not be sure of 'reliability' of used engine." oil change frequency was 11-12,000 miles per customer manual. have since discovered that there are many other engine failures of the dc 2.7 liter v-6 engine. *la

While driving, the check engine light appeared on the dash. then the vehicle stalled, causing the consumer to pull off the road. the consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer. please provide any further details. *ph *jb

1999 dodge intrepid 2.7l engine. vehicle had exhibited oil consumption problems, returned to dealer several times for repairs totaling over $1000. last trip to dodge dealer was in oct for oil leak problem. in less than one month, car began to exhibit loud ticking/knocking sound. engine is blown at 49,000 miles. dealer and chrysler both will not replace engine as recall to which there is clearly a massive problem with these engines.*jb

Without warning engine failed while driving. dealer determined that the timing belt broke, and the engine must be replaced. *ak

On october 31, 2003 my daughter was driving my intrepid on the freeway near canton, michigan. upon pressing the accelorator the engine hesitated, then the oil light flashed on for one second just before she heard a popping sound. then she lost all power. she could not steer or brake the car very well at all. she was going 65 miles per hour and nearly got into a serious accident. she got the car onto the shoulder but could not start the engine. we had it towed to a service station where they told me the engine was seized and it would cost $5,000 to $6500 to repair. it has been only 3000 miles since my last oil change.

Engine failure on a 1999 dodge intrepid, mileage 65,000.*ak

1999 dodge intrepid, 2.7 liter engine failure. *la

My 1999 dodge intrepid with a 2.7 liter engine and 83,000 miles has stopped working. my fiance was dropping our son off at the baby-sitters when the car started making a horrible knocking noise. and that was the end of the car. a mechanic mentioned something about oil sludge build-up. *la

The engine failed at approximately 100,000 miles on my 1999 dodge intrepid (2.7l) and i had a complete overhaul done at a cost of $4,300. i've since found out this seems to be a common problem with this engine. now i expect that my engine is failing again after being replaced about 14 months and 13,000 miles ago.*ak

While driving 50 mph vehicle stalled. the consumer was unable to restart the vehicle, and it was towed to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic determined that the engine needed to be replaced, and replaced it. however, the problem recurred. *ak it was determined that the problem was due to sludge build up. there were no warning. *sc *jb

While driving vehicle stalled intermittently. consumer contacted dealer on two separate occasions, but problem still occurs. *ak

1999 chrysler intrepid engine siezed up, no warning, driving on very busy expressway, luckily i was able to get over, or it could have been really bad. apparently a lot of this has been happening to intrepids because of the aluminum engine design. it is very scary, unsafe, and also very, very costly. so much for the dodge/chrylser quality, uh?*ak

While driving 65 mph, the consumer heard a loud rattling noise coming from under the hood. the consumer managed to pull over and had the vehicle towed to the dealership. the mechanic informed the consumer that the problem was due to engine failure, and the engine needed to be replaced. *ak. *jb

While driving transmission malfunctioned and vehicle stalled. an independent mechanic replaced the torque converter and engine head gasket. *ak *mr
