I had a 1999 intrepid with only 60 thousand miles on it and it was the 2.7l engine. the motor locked up and it was left to sit along side the road. the tow bill plus storage fee was in the amout of 4,000 dollars and that didn't count the replacement of the engine (5,000) and the loan amount owed ( 7,000) on the vehicle. the expenses incurred has left me unable to pay and the car remained with the tow company. the vehicle was then sold by the tow company for their fees. now i'm forced to pay the loan of this vehicle without having it in my possession. this motor should have been recalled by chrysler, considering all the complaints of failure to this design. *tr
When i left the house the car was ok, i drove to my friend house the car started making a real loud noise. i shut the car off. it wouldn't start up again, i had to have it tow to shop where i bought it. i was told the timing chain was out and it would be cheaper to get another engine. now this is where the fun being. we had a difficult time finding a engine. once we did and had it put in the car, it didn't work. we brought the engine from t&m auto salvage in canton. they put another engine in the car. i drove the car about 3 months when it starting making a strange noise the warranty had expired. therefore, we took the car to the dodge dealership. they had the car a month or two. they told me they steamed clean the engine because it was sludge build up and they had to take the engine apart to replace the timing chain. now the car still isn't working correctly for whatever reason we can not afford to find out. *jb
In july 2003 my 1999 dodge intrepid began ticking on the way to the grocery store when all of a sudden the car quit running and would not start.luckily i was able to coast in to a parking spot and not cause any damage. had it towed to a local repair shop and was told the timing chain was broke and needed replaced.i contacted the dodge dealer i purchased the car from and was told there was nothing thay could do even though it only had 30,000 miles on it, the warrenty had expired. i went ahead and had the repair shop i had it towed to fix the car.it is now april 2004 and the timing chain is again bad with 35,000 miles on it.i again contacted the dodge dealer and dodge's customer service. the dealership offered no help what so ever but the customer service was willing to maybe help depending on what the dealership found when they tear the motor down for 375.00.after searching on the web about this car i found an unbelievable number of people with the same exact problem. i seem to have gotten lucky and do not have to replace the motor. yet! to me this seems to be a very critical problem with the 2.7 liter in these cars that poses a serious risk to drivers. i haven't heard form the dodge customer service rep yet to know what kind of damage to the motor there is this time but i just wanted to be heard in regards to this major engine problem and hope dodge could take some responsability for making a bad product. *ak
I own a 1999 dodge intrepid with a 2.7 liter engine. the engine has a bad engine at only 55,700 miles. it started knocking really bad and lost all power while on the freeway. i have continued to make the payments and keep up with insurance, while being unable to drive the vehicle or be able to afford to replace the engine.*ak

I own a 2000 dodge intrepid with a 2.7 l engine. my uncle was a mechanic and taught me the importance of changing oil on a regular schedule. i always followed his instructions religiously with all the cars i have ever owned. my intrepid has 75,000 miles and the engine needs to be replaced, at an estimated cost of $7800. the engine failed without any warning, except( "a loud noise under the hood"), one morning while my wife was driving to work. i still owe $3000 and cannot afford to buy another car, and pay the remaining balance at the same time. i am only 1 of many, according to my internet research.*ak

Power steering went out then the engine seized.*ak
We purchased the intrepid with the 2.7l engine with 29,000 miles on it for approximately $13,000. march 18, 2004, with 82,000 miles on it, the engine failed. we purchased an extended warranty to cover these events, but it expired at 75,000 miles. *jb for the past year, we have been making payments and paying full coverage insurance for this vehicle as it sits behind our house, not being driven. a quick search on any search engine, brings up hundreds, if not thousands, of cases of this particular car and engine failing at the 80,000 mile mark. due to the nature and history of these engines, we are not able to find a used one to replace the failed engine in our car. we have had our names listed with dealers and salvage yards around the region since immediately following the engine failure. a new engine costs $5,000 to replace per estimates. the car is valued, with a working engine, at less than $4000. replacement costs and the amount owing on the car, put us in a position that we have no options at this point other than to let it sit and pay it off. *jb
When driving 25 mph consumer heard a knocking noise coming from the engine, then vehicle stalled. consumer had the vehicle towed back home. *ak
My husband bought me a 1999 dodge intrepid in november of 2003 with a 2.7 engine and the oil sludges up in the motor no matter how often it is changed causing problem. in march of this year problems began to become apparent because of the sludging. the timing chain guides were chewed up inside of the engine causing damage and costing $450.00 the mechanic said that, because of the oil sludge, this is a common occurrence in the 2.7 engines. three months, this june, later the engine begins making more noise now the rod bearings are shot because of the sludging problem, the mechanic has to rebuild the engine cost an approximately $1200.00. i am without a car and a clue of how to pay for the engine repair and still making payments on the car. i have done research since these problems and have read many stories about people like me in the same situation. i have contacted chrysler about my problems and received not compensation for my troubles. they have a file on me and stated that there is nothing they will do. *la
1999 dodge intrepid with 91200 miles has low oil pressure. dealer advises me the engine is worn out and should be replaced at a cost of $7000. this 2.7l engine is apparently flawed in design and manufacturer. *jb
I have a 1999 dodge intrepid 2.7 liter. while i was driving on the interstate the engine locked up. i lost all power and the power steering failed. it was all i could do to get the car safely over to the side of the road. this is the second time my engine has died. this car is a safety hazard and should be removed from the road! *jb

I have a 1999 2.7l dodge intrepid that is currently being investigated for possible warranty denial on an engine failure. we had a sensor replaced in november 18 2003 along with an oil change and a transmission change. after this service through the dodge dealership in our area we noted that the oil light was flickering whilst idling and when the engine was warm. we were assured that it was just a sensor issue and they promptly checked the oil level a month ago to assure us the oil was still in the engine. the engine began ticking at high speeds and had continued to get worse. the engine has a loud knocking noise that is predominent as soon as i turn on the engine. in order to not risk the safety of my two young children we had the vehicle towed to the dealership. they have now concluded that there was sludge in the engine and that an inspector will need to determine if the extended warranty or the basic warranty that is still affective will cover the costs. upon reading sites on this vehicle it is almost predetermined that they will refuse to cover the cost under our warranty. what rights do we have if this happens? we still owe money on the vehicle and cannot afford the rental and the cost to repair the vehicle. and if chrysler is aware of this issue surely this should have been a problem that the local dealership could have determined before our engine became damaged?*ak
While driving 25 mph vehicle stalled. this caused loss of steering and brakes. vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop, and mechanic replaced the engine in february 2003 at consumer's expense. one year later, same engine problem occurred. *ak

Driving home from work @ midnight when the heater started to emit cold air. car seemed to be running fine. no noises heard, temp gauge was low. pulled over to check for leaks or any other obvious problem, none apparent. continued to drive for several miles to get close to home, suddenly the temp gauge went all the way up to hot and the car started to fill with smoke, pulled to side of road immediately and engine quit. on country road, had to walk to get help. had car towed to repair shop where i was told a bearing was spun and the engine was blown. when i asked for an estimate to repair the station manager stated it would cost over $5,000 to repair and would be cheaper to look for a used engine but could not guarantee that the same problem would not occur. still owed approx. $5,000 on loan. had to trade it in and refinance with another vehicle. *jb
While driving at any speed consumer heard a ticking and knocking sound coming from the engine. dealer claimed that the problem was the pistons and a new engine was needed.*ak *jb

While driving at 60 mph engine check light came on and stayed on. vehicle lost power and decelerated to a crawl. then, vehicle stalled several times before the consumer could get home. each time the vehicle could be restarted, but would stall again. dealer refused to inspect the vehicle, claiming the problem was not his. *ak
99 dodge intrepid engine failure due to oil sluge. dealer said my fault due to no oil changes.
My 1999 dodge intrepid with the 2.7 liter v6 engine locked up and siezed on me without warning while traveling at 70 mph on the interstate. i was in the far left hand lane on a 4 lane stretch of the highway and had to manuever my dead vehicle to the right hand shoulder without the assistance of power steering or power brakes, since the car died completely and unexpectedly. i was very lucky that no accident took place under these circumstances.*ak
1999 dodge intrepid with 2.7l mitsubishi engine. oil lamp began flickering at low idle. dealer said the engine may be about to fail and repair would be $5000. this led me to www.airline-complaints.com, where, if you look up automobile complaints, then chrysler, you will find pages and pages of notes regarding this vehicle and engine, describing sudden catastrophic failure without warning. if this should happen on the highway, the operator could lose control as the power assist is lost to both steering and brakes. while my engine has not failed yet, the warning sign is there, and i now consider it unreliable and of diminished value, as i cannot sell it with a clear conscience. i would like to see daimler chrysler make good on premature engine failure.*ak
While driving at 30 mph consumer heard a noise,it sounded like it was coming through the engine. vehicle was taken to the dealer, and technician determined that engine needed to be replaced. *ak

I have a 1999 dodge intrepid that has an oil sludge problem. recently i have seen an investigation into these engines on the abc 7 chicago news. i have been making $325.00 a month payments; while my car has been sitting in my driveway. i would like to see something done about this alarming problem. thank you.*ak
