1999 dodge intrepid with a 2.7 engine stalled and completely stopped and would not start again. it is very dangerous to deal with this matter because the wheel could barely be turned. *la

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge intrepid. the contact stated that on two separate occasions, while approaching a stop sign, the vehicle shut off. the first time the vehicle did not restart and had to be towed. the engine was replaced, but the failure recurred four years later. the current mileage was 112,000 and failure mileage was 76,000.

While driving 45 mph, the engine made a knocking sound, then stalled. the vehicle was towed to the dealership, the engine had to be replaced. *ak the engine lost power and stated to run rough. (complete failure while making a left turn) per mechanic, the engine failure was caused by a defective lubricating system. *scc *jb

45,500 miles and told sludge build up in engine. mechanic wanted $6k for engine replacement. paid $800 for new tensions, told engine can seize at any time. had to purchase a new car after only 4 years!!!!!!!!

Engine strated knocking and check engine light came on all at once and quit. towed to shop, check engine and found that number three rod bearing had failed. ad block mill and put in rod bearing, rods, crank kit,and gaskets.*ak

I have owned a 1999 dodge intrepid since new.i have detailed records of my oil changes every 3,000 miles with filter. i added slick 50 at 52,000 miles to insure long life. we never drove it hard and at 76,300 miles it develops a rattle,i take it to the dealer and they say i need a new engine at a cost of 7,400 dollars. this is rediculous, and consumer fraud to take the public twice, first when they buy the dodge 2.7l engine , and the second time when they ream them for the replacement cost of an original faulty product.

While driving 50 mph vehicle stalled without warning. the dealer stated there was sludge in the crankcase. *ak

99 dodge intreprid with blown engine. *ak

While driving at any speed consumer heard a knocking noise coming from the engine. vehicle was taken to the dealer, who checked the motor, and informed the consumer that a new motor was needed. *ak

1999 dodge intrepid engine seized at only 5600 miles. the dealer said that there is a sludge build up in the engine. the engine needs to be replaced. i was told from at least 10 different auto shops that the 2.7 liter dodge engine is poorly made and that they have seen this same problem time and time again. it runs way too hot and if you don't change the oil every 1500 miles or so, sludge will build up in the engine and cause seizure. there should be a recall on this 2.7 engine or a class action law suit against dodge.*ak

I have a 1999 chrysler interpid with 82,000 miles. the vehicles has maintained. the timing belt broke while i was driving on the freeway at 70mph. i heard a terrible noise and immediately pulled off the freeway and called a towing company. the engine repair shop repaired the timing belt and also did major cleaning in the engine because of an excessive amount of black sludge. initially accusing me of never changing the oil. the shop had the car running again and did one last cold start checking fluid levels which were found to be normal. my car was then taken on a test drive first at freeway speeds and then through town and on the way back to the shop the vehicle died. no engine light came on prior to the engine dying. the car was towed back to the shop and the engine was found to be seized. i recieved an estimate from them at about $7,000. i wanted a 2nd opinion so i had the car towed to a dodge/chrysler dealership and they diagnosed the engine as being seized and i recieved an estimate of $7,700. i contacted the chrysler corporation and was immediately told there was nothing they could do to help me and that they hoped that i would give them another chance in the future to restore faith in their product. in researching for a rebuilt engine we were told by engine supply companies that this problem is very common in this car and that it was not recommened to put a rebuilt engine in the car because of the sludge buildup. two different places have told me that this is a common problem using pennzoil and told me never to use it again.

In the fall of 2001, we bought a certified used car from continental auto mall. it is a 1999 dodge intrepid. a service agreement on the car was also purchased. the following has thereafter taken place: the timing chain idler broke in march of 2002. continental fixed the car under service agreement. 67 miles later, the car died with my daughter and wife 7 miles from home. it had to be towed back to continental auto mall. we asked what happened and were told that the oil pump screen was plugged up. we asked from what and they said from the fibers from the timing chain idler. from my father's limited experience in mechanic work, the oil pump screen being clogged from fibers from the chain idler meant that the engine was not flushed. so for 67 miles after the timing chain was repaired, these fibers were going through the engine eventually clogging the oil pump screen. the oil pressure must have become so low that a safety switch shut off the engine. we were told that the safety switch shut the engine off so that the low pressure wouldn?t further damage the engine. repairs were again made by continentals shop. until these two incidents, we were very happy with the car. after we got the car back after the engine shut off, this is what we noticed: 1. the engine didn?t seem as quiet when running. 2. it needed a quart of oil the first week. 3. between oil changes, we had to add oil 2-3 times. before it had never used any oil. other than adding oil, we didn?t have any problems until the power steering belt idler broke the 2nd week in august of 2003. our mechanic, john rickman of john?s auto in girard, showed us the bracket from the idler. the bracket is a five-bolt bracket, which had only two bolts in it, and you can see where those two bolts have been working. on august 20, 2003, i parked the car at a flower shop in girard. i came back to the car to go home and the car wouldn?t start.

The 2.7 liter engine on my 1999 chrysler intrepid failed due to excessive sludge buildup. though the owner's manual states an oil change interval of 7,500 miles, i changed mine much more frequently. upon complaint to the manufacturer, they refused to offer any sort of settlement or satisfaction or even to discuss it further. *la

While driving to the hospital the engine (2.7)of my dodge intrepid seized. there was no warning signs, this car was always in for oil changes. i have not had any luck replacing the engine since the cost is just rediculous for what the car is worth. i still have the car which has been sitting in my garage for the past year.*ak

Engine failure. *ak

Car stalled on me a few days ago in downtown la during rush hour traffic with my 2 kids... come to find out that supposidely the car overheated (no signs of overheating at all, gauges were all okay, and sensors were checked and ok, no smoke etc.) however it overheated and warped both of my heads, blew my gaskets and broke my timing chain. this repair has taken over a week to fix and $2700.00 dollars later and i am still not thrilled. i will definately never buy a dodge again.*ak

1999 dodge intrepid engine failure while driving.

While driving 20 mph the vehicle suddenly stalled. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was determined that the engine failed. *ak *nm

While driving 45 mph the engine failed. the vehicle was towed to an independent auto body shop. the mechanic determined that the timing belt tensioner was bad. please provide details.

This is a 1999 dodge intrepid, that i have had plenty of problems out of. this was purchased at 29,569 miles, 10/99. jan 2000 the inner sensor went out, replaced by dealer under warranty. july 2000 the outer sensor went out, replaced by dealer not under warranty per milage at time. aug 2000 the passenger fan went out, replaced by dealer at a cost of $500. sense then replaced brakes often, burn lots of oil and plenty of hesitation from the transmission. but my other biggest problem is the window motor, that has gone out in the passenger window twice and now the driver window has completely fail apart. you here nothing but noise when closing the door, cannot let the window up and down without its sounding like its going to break from popping like its getting caught on something. most of the time you have to pull it up by hand in order to get it to close completely. has their been a recall on this item? *ak

My 1999 dodge intrepid 2.7l blew an engine at normal expressway speeds on july 29, 2003, causing an immediate and extremely dangerous loss of power in mid-traffic. it also resulted in an enormous repair estimate of between $5,000 and $7,500. a design flaw in this particular engine causes an excess build-up of engine sludge, which results in premature engine failure at anywhere between 35,000 and 70,000 no matter how religiously you change the oil. i have since discovered an astounding number of complaints on the internet regarding this exact issue, and any call to any auto salvage yard in america will confirm what i'm saying. everybody in the auto repair industry is aware of this problem. chrysler has been made aware of the problem by thousands of complaints regarding this issue, but they have refused to do anything about it. no recall, no assistance with repair costs. nothing.*ak

While driving at normal speed los tpower for about 2 miles until engine died completely. dealer notified. *ak

Total engine failure, due to sludge buildup. *ak

We bought a '99 dodge intrepid 11/22/99 as a program car w/about 30,000 miles on it. we bought extended warranty to cover 'surprises'. on saturday, 7/19/03 the oil light came on. we took it immediately to the closest dealer and filled out the after hours paperwork. on monday 7/21 they called & said the engine was 'shot' and the cause was sludge. they said it was caused by not having regular oil changes so it voided our warranty. estimate $8,000 on a car with a blue book value is $5,000. mileage on this car is now 62,080. *ak my husband called an engine repair place & they gave an estimate of $4,500. he said he did quite a lot of these dodge/chrysler products because their engines fail frequently. in fact the dealership we have our car at had just called and got the same $4,500 dollar estimate from him for a '99 dodge intrepid. coincidental?! and they're quoting us $8,000. so they're making additional profit off our problem. unfortunately since my husband changed the oil or we went to 'jiffy lube' type places so we have very few receipts to prove we changed the oil regularly. the sticker on the windshield indicates we had the oil changed about 1,000 miles ago. since we are leasing this car so in 15 months we either have to turn it in in good working order or buy it now for $8,549.51.

Consumer states that while driving at any speed and no with warning vehicle will shut off, causing consumer to pull over. it will be hard to get the vehicle back started.dealer notified.*ak

My problems started out at a little over 49,000 miles. i was taking my children to school (in my pajamas!!!) & the car overheated. i had to call a tow truck & a friend to help me out with the kids & a ride. turns out the cooling fan locked up. they replaced it, i was told later by a mechanic i should have been told to have the oil changed (even though it was not time) or they should have changed it because it overheated. 3 weeks later... boom fan blows out again... towed again... fixed again...this time i had the oil changed!! couple weeks later, light turns green, i begin to accelerate, rpm's go crazy, car shuts down in the middle of an intersection (thank god i was not in my jammies that day!). take it in to carmax, they tear it down, tell me sludge in the engine ruined the bearings, my $1500 extended warranty i bought did not cover it, & i now owe them $600 for the work they did to diagnose it!!! it was almost an entire year of paying $522 a month while watching it sit in my driveway. all the tires are now dry rotted... there is rust all over my rotors, my trim has dry rotted & peeled off from my windshield... so i get it fixed... $5623.93 for yet another 2.7l engine.... i will never buy a dodge again.... niether will any of my family or friends or co-workers or any body else i can talk to about this!! car - $12,000 carmax - $600 warranty - $1500 a year of useless payments - $6264 new tires, trim, battery, etc. - $1000 towing - $300 engine replacement - $5623.93 crappy car so i could go to work - $2500 the true cost of my 99 intrepid - $29,787.93 yup.... i got screwed!!!!!! thats alot of money to a family of 7!!!! dodge needs to own up & make this right!!!!! tawnya mashburn [email protected]. *ak

Engine failure due to sludge build-up at 65,077 miles. took to dealer, dealer made determination that problem was sludge build-up due to poor maintainence. oil change was performed 6 weeks before failure at 63,163; no mention to owner of any problems with oil or engine. we have researched the problem and have found many, many more complaints about the same problem with the 2.7 engine. *ak

I have a 1999 dodge intrepid with 68,000 miles on it. the motor seized on my way home from work and cost 7,000.00 for a new engine. the retail on my car is 5,200.00. *ak

While driving the vehicle's engine failed without warning. the cause has yet to be determined. please provide any additional information. *nm

1999 dodge intrepid 63500 miles oil changes every 3000 miles. bought used at 49000 miles.the engine is completely blown?*ak

Purchased a 1999 dodge intrepid in 2000. the engine locked and went out while i was driving during rush hour on us interstate 83 in pennsylvania without any notice. *la

The consumer stated while driving and without warning the motor failed. dealer notified. *ak the incident occurred at an intersection. *scc *jb

2.7 litre v6 engine failure due to fundamental design flaw in engine oil distribution system (according to local engine rebuilders). local chrysler mechanics admit there is a problem with this engine, however were unwilling to absorb any repair costs.

Complete engine failure due to oil sludge build up. i had my engine oil and filter changed every 5,000-7,000 miles. i had no prior problems with the car, until this incident. while getting on the interstate i noticed my engine stuttered and almost died, i pulled over to the side of the road and heard that the engine was knocking excessively. at the time i had 4 kids from my son's baseball team in the car and i had to get them home. so i drove home slowly with the emergency flashers on. i spoke with several mechanics and they told me that the 2.7l engine is notorious for this failure. i had the engine replaced at a cost of $5,784.72. i'm still paying on the credit card bill and making car payments. unfortunately i can never recoup my losses on this car. *ak

I have a 1999 dodge intrepid. the vehicles are just no good. the 2.7 motors in those cars are blowing up, the timing chains break. you can't find other motors to put in the cars because all the motors are just not good. most of the people i know have just sent their cars to the junk yard for scraps.*ak

At 99,500 miles the engine blew, oil had just been changed the day before when the engine began making a low ticking noise which quickly turned into a loud knocking. i had the car towed to a shop where they stated that it appeared that for some reason the car had lost oil pressure and no oil was getting to the engine. the engine would have to be replaced for a cost of at least 6000 dollars. *jb

I purchased a 1999 dodge interpid on april 11, 2003, after having it for 25 days, the transmission went. was repaired. in the shop for 2 weeks. after having it for 9 days, a loud noise in engine was noticed. it was not drove, but went into the shop again and is currently there. the engine has gone. repair shop called chrysler company and they said to replace it. our extended warranty company wants me to authorize repairs and will decide what percentage they will pay for it. but the policy we have states engine repairs and replacement., according to their booklet. the cost to replace it, $8,300.00! that is more than what we paid for the car. this car has been driveable for 25 days before first breakdown with transmission job, undriveable and in the shop for 14 days, out for 9 days and is now in the shop awaiting a new engine. i have read on the internet about other 1999 dodge interpid owners who are having the same troubles as i am with their cars. please help this engine is ruinned! needs to be replaces, 2.7l, v-6.. *ak

1999 dodge intrepid 2.7 6 cylinder engine failure at 61000 miles. no warning of approaching engine failure. oil changed 1200 miles prior to incident. car was found to have oil in pan with "sludge" at the bottom of the pan upon inspection after the incident. vehicle never ran "hot." upon consultation with local mechanics and the local chrysler dealership this is a very common problem with the 2.7 engines in this series of dodge intrepid. mechanics and engine builders have both advised that this engine has a fundamental design flaw in the oil distribution system throughout the engine, eventually leading to engine wear and eventual failure. chrysler dealership (though unwilling to replace the engine at no cost) openly admits that there are serious issues with this engine. chrysler must be held accountable for their poorly designed engine that is doomed for premature failure.*ak

Engine gives out even after proper maintenance of the vehicle. *jb

The air conditioner stopped blowing cold air and we took into dealer to service and were told that there was an electrical problem and the a/c fan and the radiator fan were seized. they cannot tell us why this would happen on a vehicle only 4 years old but could only say they "sell a lot of these fans on these vehicles and the stratus vehicles." this sounds like to me that it is a problem with a defective part rather than something the customers should have to buy "a lot of" ...

Various sensor problems. have replaced on several occasions. motor has been replaced twice, and going on it's third repair. have yet to replace any power window/door/seat.

My husband john and i purchased a 1999 dodge intrepid from easy rider auto sales 3980 pine grove ave. fort gratiot, mi 48059 on april 11, 2003. the mileage on the title at time of sale was 86,554, current mileage is 88,290. i drove the car for a total of 1,736 miles. we also bought the extended warranty policy from the dealer for the car. guardian warranty company (nadn)1-800-482-7357.ext. 111. we had the car for a total of 25 days when the transmission went out. we took it to who easy rider auto sales said are a good company to do business with...lee's auto & truck repair 810-984-8947. after having the car back for a total of 8 days, i was backing out of my driveway and felt an sudden surge of power, the rpm reading was at 4,000. i was backing out slowly. i then braked and put it into park, watched the rpm gauge and seen it go over 5,000 rpm's in park at an idle. my husband contacted his friend who owns a repair shop and accepts this extended warranty we purchased. b & d auto and truck service in memphis, mi 810-367-8881. they currently have the car. the engine is totaled. b and d called the chrysler company, who told them to replace the motor because of the damages and they are aware that the 2.7,v-6 engine is trouble. b and d called the nadn company and told them about the engine. i was told that nadn doesn?t like to pay it?s claims. b and d always has to arburtrate over the money for the bill. b and d said to replace this engine would cost $8,600.00 plus tax. when we bought the extended warranty, we paid for it in full, we didn't argue about it. it is still covered! before we bought the car, lee's auto did an oil change on it. there is a sticker in the windshield that states to have it changed again at 3 months or 3,000 miles. i drove it for 1,736 miles and had it for less than 3 months. other problems include excessive rpms in idle, the power window in the back passenger side doesn't work, the trip meter doesn't work.

1999 dodge intrepid engine failure at 52000 miles .chrysler will not back its 2.7 engine.*ak

While driving, my 99 intrepid loss power and the engine started making a terrible knocking sound. the engine to my car has died at 95999 miles. it is a shame. i have alway been such a big fan of chrysler. i was in the process of looking for a minivan to trade this car in for. now i still owe more than $7000 on this car and stuck with it. i have no clue as to what i am going to do. i priced engines. they range from $3600-$4800 and that does not include labor. the worst part is i had my children in the car when it died. luckily no one was hurt. also the steering makes a funny knocking sound when i turn. i am no longer a chrysler fan and will most likely never own another one. *nlm

Own a '99 dodge intrepid that has complete engine failure.. it is such a rampant problem in this individual vehicle that it has it's own web page --- //intrepid.clan-510.org if that isn't case enough for you to put more pressure on dodge to do something about it then i don't know why this organization exists.. go to the hyperlink that shows the actual lists with repetitive complaints & problems!!! *nlm

The car has had a/c problems. electrical problems. window problems. transmission problems. and the 2.7 motor has been out of service since 2003! i need help. i still owe $8000.00 plus on this thing and i have not been able to use it since the fall of 2003. thank you. *jb
