We have classified the 622 complaints from 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt about STEERING into the following categories.
After 1 month of use, the electronic power assist began giving out on random intervals and continues to do so to this day. the failure does not occur at predictable intervals, sometimes taking a few minutes following the start of driving, up to a half hour. this has almost lead to many accidents due to steering going out during a turn. *tr
Steering wheel shaking makes noise, popping, grinding while driving and turning then doesn't feel right. have had the problem four times this is the fifth time. the steering column and parts have been replaced four times this would be the fifth we were told by the first tech the steering wheel column would fall off in our hands and we wouldn't be able to steer the car and we have been fishing over this safteyissue with gm since . before there is a fatality they keep replacing it cost money we are without vehicle for time to fix stress neverknowing if or when it will fall off we don't want to die in a car accident or kill someone they will not replace the car keep saying its safe thenwhy do they have too keep replacing it if it isn't a defect in how its attached to frame. we are scared enough to keep taking it back when it starts making the noise etc instead of waiting for it to fall off in our hands or lock up so we couldn't steer enough is enough we don't know what else to do or how to get help we still owe on the car bought it new and this all started 4-6 months after we bought it. *tr
Power steering fails on 2007 chevy cobalt researched to find out what to do to fix, chevy dealers want $2000.00 to replace as now i find over 275 people on a "how to repair it" website having same problem & wondering when is this going to be recalled, after so many deaths? *tr
Steering wheel locked and ignition key couldn't move left or right. called dealer and was told it's a common problem. i fear that wheel will lock while i'm driving. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds the power steering warning lamp illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 99,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the vehicle was included in a recall for the power steering motor and was repaired. the vehicle experienced failure with the power steering motor. while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle became difficult to steer and the power steering motor warning indicator illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering motor failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 50 mph, the contact noticed that the message center informed her that the power steering was malfunctioning. simultaneously, she noticed that she could no longer turn the vehicle. if the vehicle is turned off and then restarted, the steering wheel will operate for a short period of time and then malfunction. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. the contact did not notice any differences beforehand. the current and failure mileages were 44,298.
I took my vehicle to get it checked due to a popping noise while turning, i was told the control arm brushing (bushing) was broken. the part was replaced. then 4 months later the popping noise returned. when taken to the dealership, it was again the control arm brushing (bushing). again, it was replaced. in about 8 weeks, the popping noise returned again. i knew what it was by then and i left it go for awhile. it was replaced in december of 2012. again it is broken as i file this report and has been for a couple weeks. *tr
My 2007 chevy cobolt was driving fine then about 4 weeks ago it started driving weird, now the power steering went out while my 17 year old daughter was driving it in a parking lot practicing for her license!!!! she was so upset when she came home that it took me almost a week to get her to drive my truck!!!!!!!! we changed one of the fuses and it started working again for about a week and today it went out again as i was taking one of my kids to work.. we were almost hit from behind as i was trying to make a right hand turn into her work!!!! *tr
I am an unfortunate owner of one of the worst cars ever made, a chevrolet cobalt. i bought this car in 2008 with hopes that it would stand up to my older cavalier and sunfire. i was sadly wrong about my choice. after only two months of owning my vehicle (i bought it at a used car centre with 54000 kms. jim gilberts in fredericton, nb) and 500 kms over my 60000k warranty my sway bar links had to be replaced. one month after i replaced them i had to replace both control arm bushings. after replacing all of that i started to hear rattling coming from my steering wheel. i came to find out that my steering column will need to be replaced. before i bought my car i had a vehicle history report done and it came back clean. it was used as a city courier car. i had thought that maybe because of city driving these parts had been worn out prematurely. after doing some research i found hundreds and thousands of people who are experiencing the same problems. almost all of them claim that these problems were with cars bought directly off the lot. i know 5 people personally who also had the same problems. one of my friends had his steering column replaced 4 times. i replaced my sway bar links twice and they need to be replaced again and i am on my second set of control arm bushings. i have yet replaced my steering column because i can not afford the bill. i have learned of the recent recall for the power steering motor. that is one of the problems that i don't have, yet. could someone please explain to me how recalls are decided on? does someone have to get into an accident for these companies to take some kind of action? i am waiting for the day when i am driving on the highway and the front end of my car falls off. *tr
Steering column is rattling brought the car in they said it was the i shaft i brought it to 3 others to look at and they said it was the whole entire steering column and it needs to get replaced with a new one.is this part of the recall and if it is why is my car not one of them?
My 2007 chevrolet cobalt lt vin# [xxx] with 31209 miles on it just had major complete loss of power steering. i checked this out on the internet and come to find out that this has been a big problem with the chevrolet cobalt since 2005. i have read that dealerships can't repair the problem even though they replace complete steering controls and ecm's. so here i am not knowing what to do and afraid to drive vehicle. i notice you have the question "number of persons injures:" below on this form. well not physical but mental: so i am listing 2. please tell me what to do? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the power steering failed without any warnings. the vehicle was merged to the side of the road, where it was turned off for two hours and then restarted. the vehicle resumed its normal operations. the failure recurred on two separate occasions. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 9,000.
In july 2008 my 2007 cobalt starting making thunking and clunking noises when turning or going over bumps. the local gm dealer found a warn sway bar link and a problem with the steering column, both of which they replaced. in january 2009 the same noise started again when i would go over bumps. this primarily would happen at lower speeds (20-45 mph). i brought the car back to my local gm dealer and they found a loose sway bar link and replaced it. now, in february 2009, the same noise is occuring going over bumps at lower speeds. i had an independent mechanic inspect the car and he found the back bushings of the front control arm are bad and the front passenger side strut is leaking. this car has only 28,000 miles on it, and is only 18 months old. i plan on taking the car back to the dealer it was originally purchased from on monday 2/23/09 to have these issued hopefully resolved. *tr
Power steering on 2007 chevrolet cobalt goes out constantly. its on when you first start the car, but then goes off after a mile or so of driving. power steering motor was changed twice, and it worked for about 2 weeks, then went right back to the old way. *tr
I crashed a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. i lost control of the vehicle and hit a utility pole. i feel like this could have been due to the power steering defect. *tr
Hard to turn steering wheel sometimes when driving.
Power steering cuts out intermittently. it happens even when steering wheel is straight, or when it is being turned. at highway speeds, it is difficult to control, but not impossible. at low speeds, the car is nearly impossible to turn unless on loose gravel. nearly hit a car in the other lane. had computer checked at chevy dealership near new paltz, ny and was told the entire steering column had to be replaced. gm informed us that there is nothing they can do, yet internet forums show many complaints of the same sort, many of which have been reported to gm as well. (website of forums - http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chevrolet-cobalt/t8fmsuqb7v2dth5jh) we have not replaced the steering column due to the fact that this is obviously a part defect. this issue of power steering cutting out continues to get worse over time. *tr
The power steering goes out with no warning. this happens now every time i drive my car. for some reason it seems to be related to the temp outside. i took it to the dealership and they quoted me $ 700 to fix this problem. as a single mother this is beyond my means. i feel this is dangerous for myself and my child. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the driver was traveling approximately 15 mph and crashed into another vehicle. the air bags failed to deploy. a police report was filed. there were no injuries reported. also, the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, there was a sudden loss of engine power as the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was not taken for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 60,000.
While driving at slower speeds the electric power assist steering stops working. this has only happened 4 times but it is very scary almost resulting in 1 accident. i refuse to pay the money they want to change the power assist motor when it should be fixed for free as a safety problem. also i would hate for gm to put the same type of part in instead of a safer updated one. i do not want to have a false sense of security. saying there has not been any deaths is not a valid defense. just think about turning right from a side street onto a busy road and your steering assist goes out. you run almost head on into a minivan with a mother driving 4 children to school. the minivan bounces off of your car and then off of a guard rail on the other side on the road. the minivan flips on its side killing two of the children and seriously injuring the mother. is this an acceptable loss as long as gm does not have to pay out any money for a recall? as far as i am concerned the people at gm who are saying the power steering assist is not a problem would be guilty of murder if they made every attempt to not fix an unsafe condition. just a short story and just my opinion. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. whenever the steering wheel is turned, the contact hears a noise as if the wheel were low of steering fluid. the vehicle has electronic steering. the steering wheel hardens and makes it very difficult to completely turn the wheel and move the vehicle. the vehicle has been to the dealer over three times, but they could not determine the cause of the failure. in windy conditions, the failure worsens and it becomes very difficult to steer the vehicle or keep it under control. the failure occurs intermittently. the vehicle has not yet been repaired because the failure cannot be duplicated. the failure mileage was 11,300 and current mileage was 16,400.
Noisy broken stabilizer links, control arm bushing broken. quick internet search shows this to be a wise spread problem. *tr
Re: 2007 chevrolet cobalt. spokane, wa. events: in a mix of ice, deep slush and snow (with michilin x-ice winter tires on all four wheels), very slippery conditions, low speed (e.g., driving down alley from my garage), failure: the electronic steering became erratic. i felt out of control, couldn't keep the car moving directly forward until i slowed to almost a stop. this was not slipping or skidding that occurs when sliding on ice or snow. rather, it was the steering wheel having a feel of being disconnected from the wheels. what was done: no repair was sought. i just was especially careful at low speeds. in normal driving, even in icy or snowy condition on the highway at higher speeds there was no problem steering. the steering problem occurred on every occasion throughout the winter that the specific conditions outlined above occurred. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 10 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle veered to the right. the failure occurs while driving at any speed. she must hold the steering wheel steady with both hands to prevent from driving into the next lane. she took the vehicle to the dealer numerous times and they checked the alignment, but were unable to determine the cause of the failure. she retrieved a partial carfax history report and it stated that the vehicle had nine reports. because she did not purchase the full report, she is unaware of the failures listed in the reports. the vehicle has not yet been repaired. the failure mileage was 5,000 and current mileage was 9,900.
My daughter was driving to work around 7:30 a.m., on the highway in rush hour traffic, so was only traveling around 30 -35 mph at the most. she somehow lost control of her vehicle, veered off the road, hit the guard railing and took out about 15 - 20 ft. of it, and landed down a small embankment. no other cars were involved. she had no idea how this happened, nobody had hit her, the roads were clear, no bad weather, no traffic problems, just slow moving traffic. her car was totaled!!! after hearing of the steering related problems with the cobalt, this would certainly explain what happened to her. she did hurt her neck and back and was taken by ambulance to the er, scared to death!. luckily she was not seriously hurt, but bruised and sore muscles, with muscle spasms for about 3 months after accident. she had owned this car less than 1 year. chevy and the nhtsa definitely needs to look into this and recall the cobalts so this doesn't happen to others! *tr
Power steering randomly stops/starts working. during a mid way through a turn with the car, power steering on dash came on and it was a real struggle to maintain control of the car and continue turning without entering the other lane. car has been into the dealership once already for the problem at which time they indicated it was the clutch switch(?). car is two weeks old and has 850 miles on it. *tr
I was driving and tried to brake before a curb and spun out of control i was not even going fast i might have been doing 25m.p.h. before the curb when the vehicle spun out of control and into a tree. *tr
Power steering. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 5-10 mph, the steering wheel completely locked. the contact could not place the vehicle in gear and almost caused a crash. she took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. the dealer informed her that the steering wheel will only lock when the vehicle has minimal movement. the vehicle has not yet been repaired. the vin was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 13,100.
I bought a '07 brand new chevy cobalt. when my odometer was around 60,000 miles, i made a left turn and lost my power steering. pretty much within 5 minutes of beginning driving, every time i drive my car, the power steering goes out. i have to turn my car off and restart it in order for it to correct itself. i have taken it into a mechanic and they told me because of the mileage it wouldn't be covered by any form of warranty because one was factory( up to 36,000 miles) and the extended warranty wouldn't cover it all. *tr
I purchased a new 2007 chevy cobalt 4-door in june 2007--in september i told my mother that my steering was strange, that sometimes i felt like i wasn't really steering my car. in october i was on my way to work on the highway, it was raining and i slowed down. upon slowing down to approx 15-20 around a curve i couldn't steer my car. i was in an accident because my car just seemed to go on its' own. that same december, i was turning into a school parking lot and again couldn't steer my car and hit a parking block. my mom thought it was my tires and invested in a new set of tires on a new car. two weeks ago (again on the highway) i came upon an accident, slowed down to almost a complete stop and once again lost my steering just long enough to turn the car a little trying to get it over to the shoulder, hit the guardrail support and smashed the headlight. i backed up, felt my steering grab and continued on. my steering i am convinced caused all 3 accidents. there is still damage on my car and my insurance rates have gone up. i want my damage fixed, my steering fixed, my mom reimbursed $500.00 for my deductible and a letter i can give my auto insurance company. it occurs fairly frequently, but luckily there has only been three accidents and no fatalities there is still damage on the vehicle because i can't turn it into my insurance company without my rates going up. when i told people at the dealership what was going on they thought i was nuts and so did i until a tow driver who also happened to own a cobalt had the same thing happen. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. while the vehicle was parked in the driveway in a rainstorm, the contact noticed that the passenger side front floor panel was drenched with four inches of water. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and repaired. in addition, when pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal, it would constantly stick. the contact had to make several attempts before the pedal would release. there was also a malfunction with the steering rod. on four separate occasions, the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for identical failures, but with no resolutions. the contact was concerned of the safety risks involved. the failure mileage was 1,800 and current mileage was 14,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that when driving various speeds the vehicle would lose power steering and it became difficult to control the steering wheel. the failure began to occur on a daily basis. on several occasions the dealership made several unsuccessful attempts to repair the steering column. the contact has not spoken with the manufacturer to-date. the contact has also experienced the failure with other chevrolet cobalt's. the current mileage was approximately 30,000. the failure mileage was approximately 2,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. when the contact attempted to start the vehicle, it failed to start. the engine warning light immediately illuminated on the instrument panel. there were several attempts before the engine would start. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who repaired the vehicle but didn't say what component was repaired. the contact stated that the engine stalled twice while driving without warning and the power steering failed. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer five times and repaired. the dealer was diagnosing the failure so that the vehicle could be repaired when the complaint was filed. the contact will notify the manufacturer regarding the failures. the failure mileage was approximately 6,000. the vin was unavailable.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. when traveling at speeds of 25 mph or less, the steering wheel would become extremely hard to turn. the failure also made it impossible to control the steering wheel. the failure mileage was 83 and the current mileage was 13,500.
I own a 2007 chevy cobalt. there is a problem with the front end making the car shimmy and shake upon braking...causes clunking noises and such. i have researched online whether or not other owners of said vehicle have been having this problem as well and it seems to me that this problem is occurring with many owners of this vehicle. some have spent thousands on repairs and still the problem is there. i have been told by a certified chevy mechanic that the problem lies in the steering column. please examine this issue further as i feel it is recall worthy. thank you for your time regarding this issue as owning a safe reliable vehicle is of utmost importance to me and those i share the road with. helpful link to where others are making their voices heard on this matter: http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2007/chevrolet/cobalt/front+suspension again thank you. *tr
While driving e. on highway 60 in az, i noticed my steering wheel sticking once in a while. after driving thru devel's canyon the steering kept pulling to the right a little then it would stop pulling, over and over. when i was on flat road again the steering pulled real sharp to the right and would not turn left, after a second of this the steering finally freed itself again but making the steering very touchy, when this happened the car started sweerving side to side and ended up hitting the guard rail on the east bound side of the highway. i was going aprox. 52 mph in a 55 mph area. when i hit the guard rail the car hit almost head on and the air bags never went off.
Popping or knocking noise when turning ,when turning at times the steering doesn't return and has to be pulled back, feels like it is locked or something, shutters at times . *tr
2007 chevrolet cobalt. consumer states safety defect in steering system *tgw the consumer began to have problems with the hvac system wiring and connector which was replaced on april 20, 2007, the second time on july 3 , 2007 the hvac system relay had to be replaced and the third time on july 6, 2007 the body control module had to replaced. also, the steering shaft and steering column had to be replaced, there was a bubble on the tire which required replacement. the window regulator and fuel pump module was also replaced. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the steering wheel was very hard to maneuver. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the contact mentioned the vehicle was repaired under recall nhtsa campaign number: 10v073000 (steering) but the failure recurred twice after the initial repairs. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 2,000 and the current mileage was 102,000.
Event: just driving alone look down at the message board and it says powersteering failure, and just like that the powersteering was gone. i was able to maneuver the car over to the side of the road, turn the ignition off and back on which worked for about 2 min and the problem recurred. the car is very difficult to steer without powersteering and the way the problem occurs could easily cause a accident i would think after only 39,000 mile that part would not be worn out. the problem still exist, i have no other transportation. just driving on alert hoping someone will take notice of the issue. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact noticed many problems with the vehicle since the date of purchase in october 2006. the contact stated that the alignment was incorrect so the vehicle was taken back to the dealer for alignment immediately. also, the check engine light, and the air bag light would illuminate intermittently so sensors were replaced by the dealer. the steering column and power steering motor, headliner. catalytic converter, wheel bearings, struts, and the heating/cooling system were all replaced. the vehicle also stalled completely on an intermittent basis. the contact stated that the problems were consistent. the manufacturer had not been notified. the current mileage was approximately 104,000. the failure mileage was 369.
I purchased a 2007 chevrolet cobalt in 2006 , they sold me the vehicle that they used for test driving, which i told them was out of line and they still made me purchase it. i bought it back a week later and they had to line it up because it was all over the road. a month later, the steering wheel would not turn, the service department told me i had to pay $1200.00 to get it fixed until i notified the district manager and he made them fix it.then the security air bag light stayed on and it would not pass inspection and they tried to make me pay for that. i have been spending money on tires all the time, spend money on brakes all the time, have problems with the electrical units to the radio keeps going out, bearings in the wheel is gone, and it keeps cutting off. i have had nothing but problems since i purchased this vehicle. i got a letter for the recall for the power steering and when i got my car back, the check engine light stays on, they messed up my boot and now telling me i need to fix it when they had someone to drive my car for 12 miles. now all i get is a lot of disrespect fromthem and they don't want to repair what they messed up. i also wanted to purchase another car last month for my son who graduated from college and i had to look through the windows to see vehicles instead of the salesman opening the door and letting me look in the inside. mind you i bought a 16,000.00 car from they and that's how they appreciate my business. i am heart broken because i feel as if i was robbed of my money. i should not have been given a car that they use for test driving. also the security airbag light would not go off and they would not let it pass inspection. *tr
Purchased new cobalt 2007 in august of 2006. began noticing hydroplaning and control problems. now that it is winter, the car will not steer, it pulls and the traction is terrible. i have been stuck several times. i no longer permit my wife to drive on the interstate for fear of a collision or worse. we have parked the vehicle and contacted our dealer with several complaints only to fall on deaf ears. the proper channels to report this has been followed but tp no avail has anything been done to replace the tires (safety first) and we feel something should be done before a serious injury or death occurs. we have searched and found numerous problems with the touring contact as tire and believe that ours has some very serious problems. we need help now. *nm
Intermittent and unexpected loss of power steering in my 2007 chevy cobalt. loss of function has occurred approximately ten (10) times since dec 09 when first occurred. power steering return after car is turned off. vehicle was inspected by a mechanic who computer tested it but found no malfunction codes. vehicle has approximately 52,200 miles. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the vehicle's steering function was shaky. she received nhtsa campaign recall id number: 10v073000, steering electric power assist system, in may 2010 and contacted the dealer. she was told that her name would be put on a list and when the part arrived they would call her. she called the dealer on july 29,2010 and they stated that her name was not on the list and they only receive two replacement parts a week. the contact was concerned about the safety risk while driving the vehicle. the failure and current mileages were approximately 25,000.
