I have been having issues with my 2007 chevrolet cobalt. while driving, usually on the highway, my car beeps twice and the words "power steering" appears on my dash. when this happens it's extremely difficult to turn the wheel left or right. i need to pull over and turn the car off and back on to regain steering. the first time i experienced this was in october 2009. i called the dealership that sold me the car and they said that it was just something that happened with cobalts. the problem was fairly inconsistent until the past month, it now happens on a daily basis. i find it happens more frequently when i am traveling at high speeds. the car needs to be turned off and back on to regain steering. usually the steering goes out about every ten to fifteen minutes. *tr

Within a month of purchasing a new 2007 chevy cobalt - i began hearing rattling noises from my vehicle. i have had the car in for repairs numerous times. multiple components have been replaced and or repaired. i currently have 15,000 miles on the vehicle - to this day i can still hear rattling noises and clunking noise coming from the steering-suspension. the mechanics have now told me they don't know what's wrong and suggested i try a different dealership. i have contacted chevy and received no help in settling this issue. if chevy would of had their return policy when i purchased - i would of gladly returned the vehicle - i make car payments on a lemon. i don't even like my daughter to ride in the vehicle for fear of her safety. i fear i will be driving down the road the front end will fall apart. it scares me to death. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. she stated while driving at speeds of less than 60 mph on the highway in light rain conditions, she heard a loud boom and screeching sound. immediatley afterward, the vehicle began to pull to the left. she attempted to steer the vehicle off the highway however, the vehicle would not respond to her steering. she then tapped on the brakes and the vehicle spun out of control until the vehicle was now proceeding backward. the vehicle then proceeded up a nearby grassy hill, turning out of control until she was able to turn the vehicle front ward. the brakes and steering still would not respond to driver initiation. the vehicle then proceeded back down the grassy hill and back toward traffic. the vehicle stopped once back onto the cement pavement. the front driver's side wheel was totally collapsed outward and the tire was shredded. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where they found the rack and pinion failed, however they would not take any liability for the failures. they stated she must have hit something in the highway to have experienced catastrophic failures. the contact was sure she did not hit anything in the road and the failure was unexpected and unexplained. no repairs were made to the vehicle, to date. the failure and current mileages were 51,000.

I own a 2007 chevy cobalt. when my mileage hit about 45,000, around mid to late october, the power steering started messing up. it will go off in the middle of driving. this is a huge safety concern for me. i have two children and it will go off everytime i drive it about 3 to 5 minutes after i start driving. i am a single parent and can not afford to fix the problem. i think this needs to be recalled. i have read so many stories over how the power steering is going out and eventually its going to lead to death because gm would rather that happen then to fix what needs to be done. *tr

Our daughter was driving a 2007 cobalt back to ucf. she avoided getting hit by a speeding driver. when she tried to return to her lane her steering was locked and had no control of car. she spun and totaled the car. she did not hit any other car. the auto was totaled. state farm has all documentation. the car was meticulously maintained. three new tires exploded as she tried to stop. *tr

2007 chevrolet cobalt electric power steering failures. my power steering goes out while i am driving. it comes back on after i restart the car. i went to the dealer and they said there was nothing they could do unless they were driving the car when the power steering fails. this has been going on for 4 months. i feel unsafe. i will not allow my daughter to drive the car. i bought the car for her. goodwrench has been unresponsive. i need help to fix this problem. it should not happen. i feel like they are sweeping it under the rug. *tr

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt, and at around 45,000 miles the power steering simply went out while i was going down the road. the cab was filled with a burning smell, and the vehicle became nearly impossible to turn. i pulled over and turned the car off. i waited about 3 minutes and restarted the car and the power steering was working again. i began driving again, and made it about two or three more blocks when it went out again, and again the car was filled with a burning smell. i contacted a chevy dealer who told me there was a service bulletin out saying that the whole steering column needed to be replaced due to a faulty power assist motor. this starts at around $2500. i did some research online and found that hundreds.. maybe thousands of people were having the same problem with the same car. many had paid the $2,000-$2,500 to have this motor replaced only to have the same problem reoccur weeks later. so, i have yet to have it fixed. today i got a recall notice for a fuel pump on this car, but chevy still refuses to correct the faulty power assist motor which acts as the power steering. its only a matter of time before someone losing steering on a major highway and deaths occur. as for my chevy cobalt.. its parked in my driveway until i can finish paying it off, and then i'll be calling a junkyard to come get it. just a thought... but its amazing how for any other product.. a dishwasher... a child's toy.. if a company sells a faulty product, you can take it back to the store and get your money back legally... if its a car, you're stuck. *tr

After owning my 2007 chevy colbalt for nearly 3 years, the power steering randomly started going out on it. the frequency in which the power steering goes out has increased and it goes out without warning. *tw

Whether you are driving down the road or making a turn and your power steering all of a sudden goes out it is very scary. my car has been doing this for a couple of months and there are times that it is very hard to manage. there has been alot of snow lately which just makes everything worse. *tr

Tl* the contact owns 2007 chevrolet cobalt. he stated the steering looses power and it cannot be turned left or right. he doesn't recall if the power steering light illuminated before the failure. he took the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer replaced the power steering motor and cleared the codes .total cost for repair was $346.26. he contacted the manufacturer. the manufacuter sent him a letter informing him that he was denied reimbursement, because the part that was replaced on his vehicle was not the part that was included in the failure. the failure mileage was 64,929 and the current mileage 75,000.

Driving down the road with my 2 year old daughter in the car, and all of a sudden the power steering on my 2007 chevy cobalt ls went out. almost caused a pile up as it was on a busy, main road. it was working okay if you turn the car off then on, but now it's stalling every minute or two. i have read this is an ongoing problem with the chevy cobalt. i don't understand, will it take lives being lost for this problem to be taken seriously? i am taking it to the dealer tomorrow and since it's under warranty i am assuming they will replace what needs to be replaced, but as i have read in other's complaints that isn't any guarantee that it will stay fixed. *tr

I drive a 2007 chevrolet cobalt ls. the electric power steering began to click off and on then this past month has gone completely off. it is extremely difficult to steer my car which can lead to an accident and/or harm to myself. i need to get to and from work and can not afford to not drive my car. i called a chevy dealership and the amount of money that has to go into this is quite a bit. i'm am very upset due to the simple fact that my car is a 2007 and this is something i should not have to worry about right now. and on top of that ever since my power steering is out my engine light is on. *tr

I am very upset at the fact that i just read all the complaints on the electrical power steering in the chevrolet cobalt. the same problem i have. i work and pay monthly payments on a 2007 chevrolet cobalt ls that is having these problems. gm should do something, or is it going to be when someone dies as a result of this. steering is a very important component to a vehicle. i refuse to pay the large amount of money that it's going to cost to get it fixed and the dealer can't promise it won't happen again. people invest money into a newer car not to have to pay for problems this early on!. my car evens stalls once in awhile when i first start it and without even mashing the gas you'll hear the ignition run hard for a few seconds like it's starting itself. *tr

The power steering in my 2007 chevy cobalt locks up and makes steering next to impossible. the car needs to stopped and restart for it reengage and than only for a few minutes before locks up again. *tr

Power steering goes out without warning, car feels like it is skidding on ice and is nearly uncontrollable. the service airbag light keeps coming on. called dealer, told nothing to do about either one, they don't know of any problems with the car. suggested i replace tires and get a front end-alignment, which i did. the problem persists. called dealer again and was given absolutely no information or offer to find out what is wrong with the vehicle, even at my expense. *tw

chevrolet cobalt 2007, power steering freezes completely. it happens every time 10 minutes after turn on. complete power steering column need replace (the mechanic said). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact was driving approximately 35 mph on normal road conditions. a chime sensor sounded inside of the vehicle and the "power steering" warning light indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. immediately, there was a loss of power steering. the driver pulled over to the side of the road. the engine was turned off. the vehicle restarted and resumed operation. the failure occurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the vehicle was repaired for the malfunction. the failure mileage was 53,500.

Bought the car in may 2008, since then within one year we replaced tires on front 3 and needing a 4th time now. brakes and rotors also have been changed 3 times each and still having trouble at 55 miles an hour shakes and some lose of control. problem needs to be addressed but dealer and chevy says nothing!! vehicles tires are losing tread on the front outside of the tires. *tr

The electric power steering assists goes out without prior warning and stays off until the cars is turned off and restarted. once the car has been restarted the power assist stays on for an indeterminate period of time before going out again. this happened four times today alone. this has happened while traveling at various speeds from 25mph to 65 mph. it doesn't seem to be triggered by the amount of time or miles driven and is totally unexpected. when the power steering assist goes out steering becomes immediately stiff and requires quite an effort. if this were to happen while entering a sharpe turn it could easily have tragic consequences. *tr

I bought a 2007 chevy cobalt ls from stearns chevrolet in graham, nc in june 2009 with just a little over 32k mi. some where between 45k & 50k mi. my power steering began to randomly go out. the first time, i was in first gear switching to second on a right hand turn. since then, it happens extremely randomly, usually in town where i have to switch gears the most. if appropriate, i can usually just pop in the clutch & restart the vehicle & it resets the motor and everything is fine for a while, sometimes it just goes right back out. i do not feel safe driving the car but i have no choice. i took the car to the dealer i bought it from (which is now closed) and it was determined that the power steering motor in my electric power steering system had gone bad and gm agreed to pay 1/3 of the $700 to fix it. i did not have the money to fix it. *tr
