2007 chevy cobalt power steering failure drive at any speed and power steering goes out without warning. when it goes out, it is very difficult to steer. has happened 4 times in the past 1 week. nothing has been done to correct yet as it is very expensive to fix. this has an electric power steering unit so there is no fluid to check. *tr

My cars power steering pump stopped working. as i was coming back from twin falls trying to turn was like being in an iron-man competition and i could have crashed! *tr

I have a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. at the time of the problem, it had approximately 47,750 miles. as i was driving down the road the check power steering message came across the dic. at that point it was nearly impossible to turn the car as the power steering had failed. i drove the vehicle home and parked it for the night. when i went out the next day to drive to work, i turned the car on and the power steering worked just as it did the day i purchased the car. upon taking it to the dealer and having the diagnostic test run on it, they said it appeared that there was a failure in the power steering motor. *tr

Power steering failed. turned off the car restarted and it happened again in less than five minutes. *tr

I was driving back from work and i had the power steering fail on my car. i pulled over and shut the car off, when i restarted the car everything was fine. about 10 minutes later the same thing happen. i pulled over again and shut off the car. this continued about every 10-20 minutes on the way home. *tr

My wife was driving down the highway at 65 mph when the power steering went out. while researching this problem online i have found hundreds and hundreds of people with the exact same problem with the chevy cobalt. she nearly had an accident. *tr

Power steering failure in my chevy cobalt. *tr

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt with power steering problems, it has stopped on me several of times on streets and freeways and have been very lucky so far of avoiding and dodging major accidents but i have tried to fix it but i am still having problems with it more then a couple times a month it is unsafe and unreliable. *tr

Power steering on my chevy cobalt goes out while driving, fortunately i haven't had a wreck. i read about this all over the internet and a bunch of people have the same problem. i think gm should do a recall on these vehicles. *tr

We were driving through a parking lot about 10 miles an hour when my power steering went out. we heard a beeping sound and could not turn the wheel. there was a car coming towards us and we started freaking out and to swerve to miss them so we would not wreck. we had no choice to pull over and try to figure out what was wrong, but since it is electric we could not find what was wrong. since this happened away from our house i missed work. this problem occurred for about four days before we could get it fixed. we took it to the chevy dealership and they said they were unable to help because it was not under warranty. we were also told that the dealership could not help because no one was in a wreck or hurt. the dealership wanted to charge us 1200 dollars. we ended up taking it somewhere else for 800 dollars. we had to buy a new power steering column and the part of the electrical power steering. *tr

Around 46,000 miles on my 2007 chevy cobalt i was driving on the highway driving to a different town, when going to turn my power steering went out. i filed a complaint to chevrolet but someone told me to do it here too. *tr

Power loss while driving, but the car never completely stops it goes but at a slower speed then usual. i thought maybe i was doing something wrong until they release the report. my wheel becomes hard to turn, so i thought i only needed some power steering but i had plenty in the container. it happens atleast 2 times every other month. *tr

While driving my chevrolet cobalt the power steering will cut out. the only way to get it to come back on is to turn the ignition off and start it back up. you do not have to turn the car off, just to acc. thankfully this has only happened to me while i had to negotiate turns at slow speeds and straight roads of 45+. i would not like this problem to occur while i am on the highway at speeds of 55+. *tr

Failure of power steering in 2007 chevy cobalt. i have been driving and the computer alert flashes saying power steering and the steering wheel locks and becomes not movable. this has happen to me twice. the mechanic has replaced a blown fuse and the problem came about again. the steering column will now be replaced. *tr

I am having an incident with my power steering locking up in my 2007 chevy cobalt and i have replaced the gear box nov of 2008 and it is back to doing it again. i am afraid that if it locks up on a curve with my children in the car on a curve it may not stay on the road and lead to an accident. i have reported this problem to gm and have had no luck. *tr

My name is crystal marie torres, and i purchased a 2007 chevy cobalt and it's barely going to be 2 years in december that i've purchased it! the power steering is already going out and the light appears. i don't believe if i'm paying for practically a new vehicle it shouldn't be doing this so soon. i've always done my best to take care of my vehicle, so why is the power steering failing!!! i got on the internet to investigate this situation with other cobalt customers, they too are having the same issue.... something needs to be done, otherwise there will be lawsuits going into action for false advertisement on such a great car! not fair to the public who has been nothing but loyal customers!!! help resolve this issue soon!!! here is the sight where others are posting their issues with the same conflict on their cobalts! http://www.topix.com. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. approximately six months after he noticed that the steering wheel was loose and before the steering failed and the power steering light illuminated. there was also a noise in the steering wheel. he took the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer reset the computer, but the failure was not corrected. when he took the vehicle back to the dealer he stated that there was nothing to be worried about. the failure mileage was 32,000. the current mileage was 40,000. the vin information was not available.

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 45 mph the consumer noticed that the power steering light appeared on the dashboard and suddenly the power steering failed. the dealer stated that the power steering motor needed to be replaced. there were no prior warnings. the current and failure mileages were 48877. updated 10/21/09 *bf the consumer stated when she made a turn, the steering failed. updated 10/22/09

The power steering fails on 2007 chevrolet cobalts. mine has failed and from my research this is not an isolated incident. there are thousands of these dangerous autos on the road. chevrolet knows about this and needs to be held accountable. *tr

My power steering goes out while i am driving. i have children and this is not safe. if you all would read all of the complaints and do something before someone gets hurt. i have told everyone i know to never buy a cobalt!!!!!! i thank god that there was been no injuries reported yet. please do something about this. *tr

My power steering went out while driving in a city road! not a good idea! i had to turn the car off and start it again to gain control! what happened next the power steering was lost again. i looked this problem up and found that many other people have this problem! i'd rather not crash my car because of something gm wont fix.. make this a recall! it's needed. *tr

Power steering finally went out. it was going out then coming back on for months. then it started going off more and more until it quit. i haven't had the chance to put up $2000 cause we have had other issues with my other daughter's $150000 surgery. i am seeing hundreds and hundreds of complaints back to 2005 where all chevy cobalts have this issue. i am surprised nothing has been done about this. there is obviously an issue here. i am afraid my daughter is going to get killed.*jb

The power assist in the steering system fails without warning while driving making steering extremely difficult if not impossible. this happened to me while i was turning left ahead of oncoming traffic and i was unable to hold a tight radius that would allow me to clear the intersection properly. *tr

When we drove our 2007 chevy cobalt the power steering went out. we had to stop the car off and re-start it. the power steering came back on but went out again. we were on the highway when it went out and we lost control of the car. we were able to avoid a crash. i took the car to our service guy and we told that it would be about $1200 to fix the problem. at this time we cant afford such a large repair. we were also told that the local dealer was aware of the problems that the model car had been having because they had multiple incidents. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevy cobalt. while driving 25 mph the power steering warning light began flashing and the power steering in the vehicle disabled. the dealer is aware of the failure; however, no remedy has been made. the contact is aware of the safety risk since he has no control steering the vehicle while driving at high speeds. the current mileage was 57,390 and the failure mileage was 57,000.

Sudden loss of power steering. *tr

My 2007 cobalt drove fine, until it reached 55000 miles. one day it felt and sounded like the front end was going to fall out. if i would go slow over a hump, you could hear a knocking noise at the bottom of the steering column. i took it to 6 different mechanics, who checked everything, struts, springs, rack & pinion, etc. finally, one mechanic, turned the steering wheel left to right about a 1/2 an inch and you could hear a knocking. he said, take it to the dealer, it is the steering.i made at least 10 trips to get it worked on. i was on the phone daily with gm. i explained when i am driving down the road, the car is all over the road, they think i am drunk, it does what it wants to. the steering wheel turns way farther than a normal steering wheel, alot of play. i can park and the wheel will be upside down, but my tires will be straight. or driving straight and wheel is turned to one side. i was soo upset, mad, because this is a 2007 vehichle. i knew nothing of a recall.they replaced my 2 front lower control arms and my lower steering column. i had to pay $900.00 for all of the work. it fixed my problem about 60%.the dealer was so nice and understanding, that he reimburse me. which i am soo thankful. so i haven't even bothered to get back intouch with them. i am to the point that i do not care. if i wreck, i wreck. i am tired of all the hassling, time, money, aggravation and days on the telephone. i still hear a knocking going over a small hump. i drive slow, stop at railroad crossings, because i try to take care of my car. i have always bought chevrolet and have never had this kind of trouble. i really do hope they figure this out and they probable do to. they are not allowed to sale any cobalts off the dealer lots at this time, until it is resolved. i am sure it is not all cobalts with these problems. i believe atleast 50% of the people have heard or read of these steering problems and are saying that theres does the same thing. i just know that i would hate to be in gm's shoes right now. thank you. *tr

Power steering motor is out, making it very hard to steer.

I was driving downhill at about 35 mph, braking to make a left hand turn through and intersection with a light. the power steering went out on my 2007 chevy cobalt, resulting in my only being able to make such a wide turn that i almost collided with the stop light pole. i then turned the car on and off and could still barely turn the steering wheel. after taking my cobalt to my nearest dealer the steering column was replaced and i called chevrolet headquarters to make a complaint. they said they would reimburse the $900 repair costs as my extended warranty ended a week before the accident. after many calls back and forth they decided to not reimburse me at all. *tr

I have a 07 chevy cobalt and i was driving on the express way when my power steering light can on and as i was turning the wheel it locked up. i was very afraid do to the fact that my child was in the car. i pulled over on the shoulder and turned the car off. i didn't know what to do but i couldn't stay on the eway. when i started it back up the wheel loosened up but sure enough a couple miles down the road it did the samething. i am sending this complaint because i think that is very dangerous especially when you are trying to turn a corner or even switch lanes. in doing research about the part i located a site "topix chevy cobalt steering failure" were there is over five hundred post about the same thing. but yet recall on this car. when will they recall it when someone is seriously hurt or even killed!!!! *tr

My 2007 cobalt purchased in amid may 2009 has a defect in the power steering which is located in the steering column . i have researched and found out that over 10,000 customers have the same issue. the repair costs 649.00 at al sierra in grand blanc mi intermittently the car randomly looses its power steering and it can occur at any time. i presume this can be dangerous especially on icy roads. *tr

2007 chevrolet cobalt power steering light came on and steering wheel gets locked up for no reason and hard to turn the wheel, while driving. almost wrecked and could not turn the wheel. the only way to fix it was to turn the car off and back on. happens every day now, when driving out of nowhere. i feel very uncomfortable driving the car now, scared to get in an accident. it is really sad when the car is practically new. *tr

Power steering failure. *tr

I bought my 07 cobalt ss in february in august the power steering started going out. i would be driving and it would just quit working but if i turned it off and turned it back on it would work for a few minutes then stop working again. it does this everytime i drive the vehicle. i called my dealership and they told me there was nothing they could do. so i called a repair shop and he told me it was the power steering motor and that they are not cheap. i have not purchased a motor yet because i do not have the money right now. this is a very dangerous situation and i think something should be done to correct it.. also another problem i am having is the ignition. *tr

Driving and power steering goes out. *tr

I was almost involved in a head on collision due to the power steering failure of my 2007 chevrolet cobalt lt. i was turning left onto a busy street. the power steering failed and the message "power steering" was displayed on the dash. this caused me to drift into the on coming lane. if i hadn't acted quickly enough i would have been injured. it took a lot of effort to turn the wheel and save my own life. i understand that this is a know problem on all chevrolet cobalts due to the electronic steering assist. from what others have said, this happens randomly. please help and save others. this will most certainly cause someone to have an accident. *tr

I recently got my wheel bearings replaced on my 07 chevy cobalt lt. a day later my power steering light comes on. it comes on every day and continues to come on while driving every 5 minutes because when you shut the car off it resets. i have taken it to the place where i got the wheel bearings fixed and they cant find the problem. *tr

Power steering is randomly failing on my 2007 chevy cobalt. my teenager drives this car, very scary for her to lose power steering. researching the internet this seems to be a common problem for the cobalt, a very dangerous common problem. a recall needs to be done by gm before someone dies. the cars are generally used by commuters and teenagers. just got off the phone with gm, they acknowledge part failure. *tr

At first the problem would come and go for about two months but gradually got worse. now, i have no power steering at all - ever. the dash dial gauges go haywire and it feels like my transmission is going to drop out of the bottom of the car!! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 35 mph the power steering warning light illuminated intermittently, and then there was a loss of power steering. as a consequence, it became difficult to control the steering wheel. she was in the process of having the vehicle inspected by the dealer. the failure mileage was 52,000 and the current mileage was 54,371.

Power steering goes out while driving - 'power steering' indicator lights up on dash. only way to get power steering back is to shut car off and re-start. there is no warning or any apparent way of predicting when the power assisted steering module stops working. potentially very dangerous situation if traveling at highway speeds! *tr

The chevy cobalt has a major issue with the power steering motor. around 41-44,000 miles the motor fails. it is an electric motor and all of a sudden just stops working and you loose power steering to the car. there are multiple cases of this that can be found by simply goggling chevy cobalt power steering. the motor has to be replaced and it can be very expensive. this is a defective part that should be recalled. i have a 2007 but i've heard of it on 2005's also. please do something soon to protect would be consumers from the danger of this happening to them. when it happened to me i almost had an accident. *tr

Bought 2007 chevy cobalt certified used with 38,000 miles. about 5 months later the power steering starts to fail. power steering reads in the information box and wheel becomes extremely hard to turn. this problem is off and on and has been getting worse (happening more often) as time has passed. this has been revealed to be a very common problem in cobalts and makes driving conditions very dangerous. am told the entire steering column and associated parts may need replacement. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact was making a right turn at approximately 5 mph when the power steering failed which made the vehicle very difficult to maneuver into the driveway. the contact stated that the electric steering failed and had to be replaced. the dealer replaced the entire steering column at the contacts expense. the manufacturer was notified and stated that there were no related recalls or warranties related to the failure. the failure mileage was 50,000.

Power steering indicator light came on while i was out and about running errands (at least 3 times). fortunately, i was able to pull over, stop and start again. it would run fine for a short while and the light would come on again. i also experienced a great deal of trouble 7/17/09 with the key getting stuck in the ignition and it not turning. i have recently spent $1,600 plus to repair/replace the cylinder head gasket. *tr

Last year a bought a 2007 chevy cobalt for my daughter who had just turned 17. the car rode smoothly and i was impressed with the overall handling. this unfortunately only lasted for 9 months. my daughter was driving home from work at 1230am on sunday night only to call me hysterical that the steering got hard all of a sudden. i told her to calm down and pull over and i would be there as quickly as i could. well after explaining to an officer that stopped me for speeding, the officer and i both got to my daughter and sure enough, the power steering did fail on her. i proceeded to drive the car home carefully, and ever since then the steering has been an ongoing problem. i can't unload the car cause i owe $9000 on it. so now i'm researching to replace what i need to replace on this piece of junk. i do hear a click under the dash right when the steering gives out, so i'm replacing both the power steering control module and the assist motor. here's hoping this solves the problem. to gm, i am never, ever buying another vehicle made by you again!! may you mercilessly go out of business once and for all. we could use another domestic car maker to replace your incompetence. *tr

I purchased a 2007 chevy cobalt in 2008, with approx. 30,000 miles. when i had around 35,000, miles it started to get loud ,rattling noises, like metal on metal, coming from under the car. they usually happen when i go over ripples or bumps in the road , at slower speeds. i took my car back to the dealer and asked him if they had heard of any problems or received any technical service bulletins about this problem and he said they had not. (july 2009) i told him to inform me if they did. in the meantime, my warranty expired. at that time,i had already started to research the problem online and network with some other persons, locally, to see if they had any such problem. well lo and behold, it seems that there was a technical bulletin issued on 11-9-2005 (# 050232005) that details this problem. and yes, apparently, other persons that i have talked to, and also with the research that i did online, definitely showed that many others are also having this same problem! i feel that as a responsible auto manufacturer that gm needs to correct this horrible rattle.a recall for this is in order, especially since they were aware of this since 2005. i do not feel that we,,the consumer ,should be responsible for this repair,as gm is trying to repair their image,"do the right" and fix this at no cost to the consumer--recall. *tr

I was driving my car on a straight stretch of road for about 5 miles at about 45 mph when the car's information screen read "power steering" and the wheel locked up. i was able to safely pull into my place of work but with a lot difficulty as the power steering was out. i turned the car off and then on again the problem was gone. i took it to the dealership the next day and they said it was a very common problem and they would need to replace the steering column. this is an extremely dangerous problem and needs to be addressed by gm. how many accidents need to happen before gm does something about this. i have an earlier model of this same car and have the same issue now only gm refuses to fix it because it is past it's warranty period. this is a serious defect and i now im not the only one having this issue. two of the same model cars with the same issue at the same house is a problem. *tr
