We have classified the 1199 complaints from 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt about STEERING into the following categories.
Electronic power steering failure. 99% of driving time is without power steering. received estimate to repair; re-manufactured part is $900.00 plus labor to remove old and replace part. still paying monthly on car and can't afford the repair. *tr
I was driving on a straight road when all the sudden on my 06 cobalt the power steering went out and the dashboard says power steering. it would not work and had to manually turn it. this is a danger for many reasons. there is over 5000 complaints on the internet and this needs to be taken seriously!! *tr
I was driving my 2006 chevy cobalt when the power steering went out and i received a power steering error message. i took it to a gm certified dealer to be diagnosed and my steering column control motor had shorted out causing me to lose my power steering. this part being an electric motor is not covered under warranty and the electric circuit failed under its own accord. my power steering has not show any other problems before this incident and regular maintenance has been performed. i was able to get stopped safely but the loss of my power steering at a high speed could have resulted in a severe accident or harm to others. the entire motor must be replaced for a cost of $850 for this short not to occur again. *tr
My electric power steering in my 2006 cobalt has gone out about ten times at random times in the past two days. going about 65 mph on the highway it shut off scaring the light out of me. it shuts off at random times and if you turn the car off and back on it will start working again. i believe this is not safe to have happen in any car. i only have about 25,000 miles on my car for it to start acting up. i am going to take it to the dealer ship tomorrow morning to see if my warranty covers it. i have seen boards online and many people are having the same problem with there cobalts. *tr
I turned on my car today to go to work and it read "power steering" on my gauge. i try to back my car out and it was extremely hard to turn. i put it in drive to drive and drive it around my addition and it began to jerk and act like it was going to die. i turned it off and back on and it was still having the same problem. i went to my local autozone to see if they could tell me what was wrong with it, but of course when the tech rode around in the car with me the problem completely stopped. i have read many blogs of the happening with the 2006 cobalts. and, of course, it is no longer in warranty. as a single young adult i can not afford to fix this. with our economy problems we have today i can barely afford to live. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the traction control and the check engine warning lights intermittently illuminated on the instrument control panel and the vehicle stalled. the dealer replaced the shift column for $260.00 at the owners expense; however, the repair did not remedy the failure. he was in the process of notifying the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 56,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact noticed issues with the power steering in her vehicle. while driving 20 mph, the power steering would function for approximately .2 miles and then fail. she attempted to turn off the vehicle and restart it, but the failure continued. the failure recurred frequently. she took the vehicle to a dealer and they stated that there was no recall. the vehicle has not been inspected or repaired. the manufacturer has not been notified. the current mileage was approximately 82,000 and failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
When ever i drive a small distance the power steering signal comes on and i loose my power steering which almost made me have an accident, and my car locks keep popping up and down. *tr
The power steering system went out on my 2006 chevy cobalt. unsure exactly when it went out. *tr
Power steering does not work . i know several other owners with the same problem. please advise me on a solution and reason for such on a new car. *tr
I was leaving my apartment complex and was in the process on turning right onto the main street when my car wouldn't allow me to continue to turn right so i forced it until i was straight again and then i had to stop(in the street) to see why i couldn't turn and my message board was flashing power steering. i then tried to turn into a business to get off the main road but couldn't turn in so i turned off my car and started it again and the power steering returned but only for a few seconds. i had to continue to stop and turn my car off and turn it on again just to return to my residence. the power steering is completely gone and i can't even drive my car. i called gm and they told me there was nothing they could do since it was out of warranty and i called the dealership and they told me to bring it in but i informed them that i lived three hours away and didn't feel safe driving the car down the highway and they said all they could do was have me bring it in and can cut me a deal on the repair. i informed both companies that i was not working and they told me there was nothing they could do. i went online to see if there were others with this same problem when i found that there are several people with the same problem and nothing is being done about it. i have a 2006 chevy cobalt lt. *tr
We purchased this car for our teenage daughter based on the reputation of chevrolet. driving down the road the powersteering goes out without warning. it can be restarted which will reset the powersteering for a short period of time however, this is unsafe. in mid turn or maneuver this is likely to happen which is likely to cause a crash. i have researched and it does not seem to be a random issue but many people with this same model of car are having this same issue. chevrolet needs to take care of this problem! *tr
Intermittently loses power steering while driving. (known defect by dealer). *tr
2006 chevrolet cobalt-power steering failure. i have no power steering in this car now. the electrical unit that powers the power steering has gone out-failed. i took the car to a chevy dealership and was told it would cost at the very least $800.00 to fix. i cannot afford to have this repaired. my son uses this car daily (now with no power steering) to and from work and to school. his commute is 1 hour on the interstate one way. my son follows a website for cobalt owners and tells me that almost all of the emails on the website are regarding the failure of the electrical unit for the power steering. we have also had to replace the fuel tank and fuel injectors on this car. will there be any recall for the chevy cobalt? there should be!!!l *cn
I have a 2006 chevrolet cobalt and unexpectedly the power steering fails. it makes it very hard to turn into a parking space or any kind of movement for that part at slow speeds. unfortunately i hear the fix cost over 1000 dollars, money that i don't have on a fixed income. i bought the car used in the summer of 2007 and by the summer of 2008 the problem started to happen sporadically and then more often. it seems to happen more quickly and often when it is hot outside and i live in texas which is normally hot most of the year. it is very annoying to have to turn my car off to get the power steering to work. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 85 mph, the power steering warning light appeared on the instrument panel. seconds later, the contact noticed that the power steering failed. when he turned off and restarted the vehicle, the power steering worked properly. the dealer stated that the steering column needed to be replaced. the contact did not notice any differences beforehand. the current and failure mileages were 57,000.
The electric power steering randomly failed, making steering nearly impossible. the power steering comes on whenever i turn the car off and back on, but it fails repeatedly. it happened about ten times over the course of 3 hours of delivery driving for a chinese restaurant. i have not done anything to correct the failure, because to replace the electric power steering motor, the entire steering column must be replaced, and that costs almost $2000. i cannot afford that, but i still have to make my living delivering pizza and chinese food, and i'm truly scared that i'll end up dead or severely injured as long as this problem persists. *tr
My 2006 chevy cobalt keeps having power steering issues. i've taken it back to the shop only for them to say there was a computer error. they get the check engine light to come off, but two weeks later it does it again. my power steering goes completely out with my transmission knocking. i took it in back in july and the problem keeps coming back. i've researched this online, and seen that there are a lot of other people who has had this done to them as well. *tr
I have a 2006 chevy cobalt that i purchased used in august of 2007. recently the power steering has been going out (while the car is in operation) which makes it very difficult and very dangerous because it becomes nearly impossible to turn the wheel. my wife has had this happen to her several times just in the last two weeks and it has happened to me a few times. my research online into this issues shows that it is not unique to my vehicle at any means, many people have suffered the same thing and notices have been sent to gm about this, so far with no result. i fear that if it hasn't happened already, the wrong car will go out on the wrong person trying to make a turn and a fatality will be the result if this car's unusual steering system isn't recalled soon. *tr
I have a 2006 chevy cobalt ls coupe. i have a problem with the power steering, as do many other cobalt onwers. the power steering motor will turn off unexpectedly while driving. i've never been in an accident or had any other serious problems with the car. this makes the car very difficult to drive while at low speeds. *cn
This is the 7th trip to the service center since december 2007. the same symptoms happen on each trip. the electric power steering fails. the lights on the dash board light up. the car starts to buck and the steering wheel is almost unbearable to drive. the gear shift clicks and makes strange noises. *tr
The power steering on my 2006 chevy cobalt cuts in and out with no rhyme or reason. there have been other people with this same car who have experienced the same problem. this is extremely dangerous and needs to be address by gm. *tr
Friday night at a gas station. started the car. engine shut off when placed in reverse. would stay running in park, neutral, and drive. drove the car home. called langs chevrolet in beavercreek, ohio saturday morning. was going to drive car in to dealership. car would not start intermittently. when the car did start, it would run for 2-10 seconds then "power steering" would come on. air bag lights would come on. various intermittent codes would come on. most of the time the all gauges would go off and the car would not start. lang had car towed to dealership saturday.. feels like the steering column is loose. also, front suspension/steering makes rattling noise over rough surfaces. will make a rattling noise while sitting still and moving steering wheel back and forth will repost with the results. others...please do not repost the same complaint! this bogs down our search capabilities. thank you, paulj *tr
Power steering went out on 06 chevy cobalt and gm does not have the remedies to fix it. *tr
In my sons 2006 chevy cobalt, at any giving time the power steering light comes on the dash and he loses steering on the vehicle, once you cycle the ignition it works for a little while then happens again. i have read several complaints about this and it's costly to repair over $2000.00. i know gm knows about this so why aren't they doing something about this mechanical issue that is going to kill someone!! i believe a recall should be done because of the unsafe issue while driving or turning a vehicle and lose control. this problems happens at least 3-4 times a day and son just doesn't have the money to repair. he just joined the army in sept. 4, 2008 and is going to need his car in va. for his training. could you please provide a push to gm on this issue.. please!! thank you.. *tr
There were no events leading to the failure of the power steering in my 2006 chevy cobalt. it happens everyday, atleast once every three minutes. in order to "temporarily" fix it you have to put the car in park and turn it off and restart the car then in about three minutes it goes out again. then you have to repeat this. i am not the only one with this problem thousands and thousands of people are having the same problem with 2005 and 2006 cobalts. you can search on the internet power steering problems cobalt and you will see. this has been going on for about 5 months because on top of my car note and insurance i can not afford to fix this. *tr
Intermediate power steering goes out and message is displayed to service power steering, this happens every time i drive the vehicle. loud clunking noise is coming from steering column. *tr
2006 chevy cobalt - randomly loses power steering. has been occurring 3-4 times per week. has been to chevy dealership 3 times (still under warranty) - they say they cannot find any problem. this is a dangerous situation as it has occurred while driving at 55 mph. car has to be stopped and restarted for power steering to go "back on". i have read many complaints regarding this same thing occurring in other cobalt vehicles. there has not been an accident yet, but this needs to be addressed. *tr
Chevrolet cobalt steering issues and electronic controls. the electronic power steering fails when driving, the dash lights light up and the car bucks and is very hard to steer. this is the 6th visit since december 8, 2007. service visits on 12-8-07 (computer reset , steering column replaced), 4-29-08 (computer reset , no work done), 5-21-08 (updated software to bcm and ebcm), 6-26-08 (bcm replaced, replaced gm high speed land terminal, and power steering module), 7-21-08 (replaced psm terminal connector) twice. could not even drive car off the lot. car still in shop. service technician stated " we have no idea what the problem is." gm to make visit to service center to assess situation. this car is unsafe to drive. when the steering goes out the car is not as responsive to control at highway speeds and is unsafe. *tr
I was driving the car and everything was fine. out of no where the power steering stopped working. it was very had to steer and get control of to car. i was able to get the car to a parking lot and call the dealership i purchased it at. i brought it to them and they repaired the car 4 days later. the following is what i got charge for. tech replaced steering column and cleared all codes. 55cpcr3 $171.70 19200751 steering column kit $559.98 fedx ovn, chrg $43.08 shop supplies for repair $10.30 total with taxes 840.01. *tr
I own a 2006 chevy cobalt lt. it runs off of a electronic power steering system which differs from the typical hydraulic power steering fluid system. every time i start the car then rotate the steering wheel to back out of my drive way my power steering shuts down. the first time it happened i was driving down the interstate to orlando and it locked up. this problem can be fatal if someone who is driving is not prepared or cannot drive a car without power steering. i have read thousands upon thousand of chevy cobalt drivers having this same issues and all general motors is telling us to do is take it to a dealership which then gets followed up by a nice $2000+ bill. if this problem does not get corrected i am almost certain that deaths could result from this problem. going down the road and power steering locks up with a turn coming up means a horrific car accident will ensue not only for the driver of the impaired vehicle but others on the road as well. i am awaiting a reply back from an attorney im speaking with this concerning any lemon law issues in the state of florida and i would hope that the nhtsa is looking into this matter. i know i am not the only one with this issue and it appears in saturn ions as well. the problem seems to occur from vehicles years from 2005-2007 the most as i have not fully looked into the 2008's yet. nhtsa please assist us!!! i do not want to be one or see a motorist on the road lose power steering a life gets lost due to the power steering failing. *tr
What else my power steering keeps going out and i can't believe the nhtsa won't do a thing about it. what's it going to take 100s of deaths to get anything done. i can't stress it enough. its a chevy problem but yet chevy want the owner to shell out $2000 to get this fixed. are you kidding me! i can't believe that this form has the question "number of deaths" shouldn't we be trying to prevent deaths with this thing not total them up. frankly i surprised there aren't more deaths. you have no clue how hard this car is to turn. maybe if i put 100 deaths in the blank someone will actually read the complaints and how the courage to do something about it! here a website for 90 more complains. http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chevrolet-cobalt/t8fmsuqb7v2dth5jh what to help us out???*tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the power steering continued to fail. it was very difficult to move the steering wheel shaft. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that there may have been a misread in the computer. the failure could not be duplicated. on a separate occasion, the power steering failed again. the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle in order to correct the failure. later, the power steering failed completely. the vin was unknown. the current and failure mileages were less than 50,000.
My car has the power steering constantly just shutting off while i am driving and fear that i will not be able to keep control of the vehicle every single time this happens to me. my fiance has almost been in two wrecks because the power steering shuts off at random times while driving. *tr
Power steering failed during drive and lock up the steering wheel completely. steering wheel was very hard to steer since it is a all electronic power steering. i had to pull over during traffic and shut off the vehicle in order to re-initialize the power steering. i was able to gain control of the vehicle. *tr
While traveling at highway speeds, approximately 40 mph a message appears in the message center in my dash indicating the power steering has gone out. i feel no difference in steering, but when the car switches gears (it is an automatic ) it is very rough and almost dies. it occurs randomly and has happened twice this week local repair shop couldn't find any problem. *tr
When it is hot out the power steering light comes on and the power steering is lost. if i turn the car off and restart it power steering is resumed. *tr
I own a 2006 chevy cobalt lt, which i purchased brand new. it now have 62,000 miles on it. yesterday (6/26/2008), was my first incident with a problem that has continued into today. i was driving on the highway and the car bell beeped twice. i looked at my dashboard which read "power steering" and at that moment, i lost all power steering to my vehicle. i immediately became nervouse, pulled over, and shut the car down. when i started the car up again, the problem was gone. now, randomly, i have lost pwer steering 5 times and each time it goes away with shutting the car down. since these have been random events, they have made my car dangerous to operate as they have been occuring on the highway, while making a u-turn, and while parallel parking on a busy street. the car will be brought to the dealership to be diagnosed and has not been diagnosed yet. the problem has been common with other 2005-2006 cobalt owners and many times, the entire steering column has needed to be replaced.
While traveling the speed limit on a 4 lane hwy72 west of walnut, ms, my daughter (16) crashed her 2006 chevy cobalt ls. my daughter said that suddenly the car "wouldn't go where i wanted it to". also immediately prior to losing total control my younger daughter (11) asked her sister, "what's wrong with the car?" losing complete steering function, the car shot at a 45 degree across the rightmost lane (leaving 4 plain black tire marks on the pavement), hit and climbed the embankment and rolled over once or twice and came to rest upside down. a cursory search on the internet showed more than a few similar incidents like my daughters. . i don't like witchhunts or hunters but something seems to be amiss in this and like vehicles. its a cute car, one that kids would like. maybe this will keep others from getting injured or even killed. i imagine state farm will total the car but it is currently still intact as the wreck just happened yesterday. no air bags deployed, no hard frontal crash, mostly roll damage and two terrified but okay children. thanks *tr
Our 2006 chevrolet cobalt loses it's power steering. at first it is only intermittent, now it loses power steering within about a minute of turning it on. it makes it harder to steer. we have not done anything to correct the failure because the solution to fix it is to replace the steering column and we can't afford it. *tr
I own a 2006 chevy cobalt. i was driving on a windy road last week and all of a sudden a message flashed on my dash that read power steering, and i had no power steering as i was going in to a turn just about lost control of the vehicle. i have researched the problem on-line to find out thousands of other cobalt owners are having the same problem with there power steering, which is electronic. there is no recall on this. this has been featured on local news channels. gm has done nothing about it... *tr
Power steering (electric) has gone out on car along with 20,000 other peoples chevy needs to fix my car and this problem. *tr
1) when purchasing this used vehicle from the dealer, we were informed the previous owner had broken his key in the ignition switch, hence the broken ignition lock mechanism. lie 2) car began making a front end noise or so i thought, the next day as my daughter in law and my grandkids were driving home the power steering indicator light turned on, she applied her brakes to slow down and all the lights on the panel turned on and her steering locked. the truck behind us was forced off the road to avoid slamming in to us. after getting online to see if there was going to be an easy and inexpensive way to repair this problem i was appalled to read all the complaint regarding these same issues. i lost my oldest child to faulty seat belts on the 01 ford ranger edge. this is indeed a safety issued that needs to be resolved immediately before someone is seriously hurt or killed. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact experienced a loss of steering ability when she depressed the brake pedal. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle became uncontrollable and completely shut down. the contact could not turn the vehicle to pull off the road; however, no crash occurred. the current mileage was 49,000 and failure mileage was 48,990. updated 07/29/08 *bf the power steering light illuminated. the vehicle began to shake and when the brake was applied, the vehicle shook violently and immediately shut down. updated 08/01/08.
Power steering failure with my 06 chevy cobalt. started occurring around 40,000 miles. it spontaneously fails about twice a month with no real reason that i can tell. when it occurs, i have to pull off of the side of the road and turn my car off and then back on again. sometimes i have to wait several minutes before restarting to correct the problem. *tr
My power steering tends to go out while driving. traction control light comes on. the shifter clicks. my speedometer and rmps go nuts. my abs and brake light flash. the car stalls when i stop in traffic or at lights. they reprogrammed the computer chip three times and replaced the part once. i now am having the problem again and they said its not their problem. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that when the keys were in the ignition while the vehicle was parked, she was unable to remove the keys from the ignition. the gear shift selector was also stuck in the park position and could not be removed. the dealer replaced the ignition at the owner's expense. in addition, while driving at speeds of 20 mph, the power steering locked without warning. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where the steering column was replaced a second time, at the owner's expense. the manufacturer stated that there were no recalls and the warranty was not valid. the manufacturer would not provide any assistance. the failure mileage was 45,052 and the current mileage was 72,000.
At 50,000 miles or so the power steering failed, it no longer works. i heard this is a common problem with the chevrolet cobalt. gm will not fix this problem now because my car is no longer under warranty. *tr
I've owned a 2006 chevy cobalt for about 3yrs now and the power steering has been going out whenever it pleases for the last 2yrs! the only way to fix it temporarily is to turn the car off then back pn and hope the power steering doesn't go out again. driving this car is a life and death hazard for all of its owners and the public. *tr
I have a 2006 chevy cobalt that has a power steering issue. the screen will display "power steering" which means that i have lost power steering. i have had steering column rattling randomly. my key gets stuck in the ignition, my cruise control does not work a long with my keyless entry i do not have any money to fix it . *tr
