We have classified the 1199 complaints from 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt about STEERING into the following categories.
The powersteering on my chevy 2006 cobalt 4 door, the powersttering light comes on, then the car is nearly impossible to control. makes driving almost impossible. took to mechanic, seems the computer chip is ok, the selad system for the steering fluid is ok, it is an electronic motor that overheats is what the mechanic stated. repaired 2/2/2010. *tr
I was driving on the highway when all of a sudden my steering wheel locked and the car started pulling to the left. i then noticed a message flashing on the screen on the dashboard saying power steering. i turned the car off, and upon restarting the vehicle, the problem seemed to had gone away. however, after driving a few miles, it will flare up again. the problem occurred everytime i drove the car thereafter. i took the car to the chevy dealership to find out what was causing the problem. it was discovered that the eps motor had gone bad, so i had a new eps motor installed. *tr
Strong fuel odor during operation and after turning off engine on a 2006 chevy cobalt. research shows this is a common problem with this make/model. several owners report similar problems. spoke to gm, they claim no open recalls or service bulletins exist. owners have reported the problem being cause by defective fuel pump assemblies. again gm refuses to take action. this among other defects on these cars is a perfect example of consumers being but in danger by faulty vehicles. since gm refuses to acknowledge the problems with there vehicles government intervention in the case is a must. *tr
I have a 2006 chevy cobalt. a few months after my 3 year warranty expired, i noticed that something within the front end of the car would start to shake at certain speeds. i took my car to an independent garage & was told my power steering motor case was cracked. i called gm to find out if covered by an extended warranty & was told no. i asked the rep if there had been other complaints about chevy cobalt power steering, at first she said no, then she said none that she was aware of. the mechanic at the garage told me the part alone to repair this problem would be over $800. he thought it should be covered by a warranty as it is a safety issue. since the mechanic said the price of the part should go down with time, i continue to drive my shaky cobalt hoping the power steering will not go out on me. *tr
2006 chevy cobalt lt power steering goes out intermittently. must turn off car and restart to regain power steering. *tr
While i was driving on the freeway, my power steering went out. i almost lost control of my car, it was extremely difficult for me to safely steer my car off the road. i has to slow to an very unsafe driving speed of 10 mph just to get home. i had no idea what had happened to my car. *tr
2006 chevy cobalt power steering failed. i cant control my car...i cant drive my car. the wheel is so tight that it is very difficult to simply drive out of a parking lot. if this had happened while i was in a turn or in heavy traffic, i would have wrecked. it happens constantly now and it wont stop. i am being told it will cost me $1200.00 to fix it. there are thousands of people on the internet with the same problem. this needs to be a recalled item. controlling a vehicle should be of importance to gm. *tr
I own a 2006 chevy cobalt lt and recently while i am driving the t/c, security, and power steering lights come on and my power steering goes out and my car starts bucking and jumping like crazy. the last time it happened while i was driving 70 down the interstate and i almost crashed into the divider wall trying to pull over. it has been brought into the dealership 3 times and they have no idea what is causing it. i have already paid for a new transmission module which was not the problem. it seems to reset after the car is turned off for a while but if it happens it could cause serious crashes. there are already thousands of reports on the same incident with this particular car. *tr
2006 chevrolet cobalt power steering doesn't work. the car will not turn. this caused me to almost have an accident. the car is out of warranty and cost about 1,000 dollars to repair. after researching this problem i found it to be happening a lot. this is a real safety hazard. is there a recall on this problem? *tr
I own a 2006 cobalt. the power steering went out when my 29 year old son was turning onto a traffic circle in fort worth, texas. the car hit the curb causing damage to the right tire and wheel. my insurance company (usaa) paid $4269.69 for repairs, $420 for car rental; i paid $500 deductible. classic chevrolet fixed the power steering without charge; however, if there had been a timely recall the accident would never have happened. *tr

Power steering column not working. *tr
1. no events leading up to failure. 2. failure occurs 2 to 3 times while driving, consequences are power steering goes out while driving...very hard to turn...could cause accident. i have read that many people have complained about the same problem. gm needs to fix this problem. 3. correction for the problem is shut off the car and let sit for a couple of minutes, turn it back on and power steering come back. then it happens again. the price to get it fixed is about $1000. *tr
Electric power steering. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. he stated while traveling at speeds of 55 mph, the steering column locked without warning. the dealer replaced an unknown part at partial expense of general motors. the vehicle was not under warranty. on a separate occasion, while operating the vehicle at speeds of 65 mph in clear conditions and moderate traffic, the steering wheel would not respond to driver operation. the driver attempted to slow down and move the vehicle off the highway by braking lightly, however the wheels would not respond. the vehicle then spun in a complete 360 degree turn and side grazed the median strip before coming to a stop. the manufacturer was contacted but took no liability for the failure. repairs were made to the vehicle at the owner's expense. the failure and current mileages were under 47,000. updated 3/12/10 *cn the consumers daughter hit a guardrail due to the steering malfunction. updated 07/09/10.*jb

2006 chevy cobalt power steering goes out intermittently at various speeds car has 39k miles and started 2 weeks ago. *tr
The electronic power steering in my 2006 chevy cobalt ss goes out randomly at different speeds. the power steering resets itself when i turn off and on the car. so far it has happened to me 5 times the latest one i was going down a backroad going 45 miles per hour and it just turned off. luckily there wasn't anyone around me and i was able to stop and shut off the car and turn it back on. also, luckily i was close to home so i didn't have to drive it much farther with a chance of it happening to me again. *tr
I hadn't had any problems with my car and then one day i was turning in a parking lot and the power steering went out. i got it into a parking stall and shut the car off, then proceeded to wait 10-15 minutes and started the car again, there were no problems until i started to dive again, it happened about 3 more times that day. it happened as i was driving the freeway coming into a curve in the road, in the parking lot as mentioned and pulling into my driveway. if i hadn't driven a car in the past with no power steering i would not have know or been able to steer the car safely. it could have been bad if i hadn't been able to control the car on the freeway. this has happened several more times since this first occurrence and every time it does happen it's not just once, it's several times that day then it will be weeks or longer without any problems. it is completely random and unsafe, you never know when it's going to happen and there is no warning. the "power steering" indicator comes up as it's going out. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 25 mph, she noticed the power steering warning light was illuminated and suddenly, the vehicle no longer had power steering. the failure has not been diagnosed by the dealer and there were no prior warnings. the current and failure mileages were 24000.
While driving on highway power steering light beep on a few second later power steering out. pull over turn car off steering work for awhile then out again. happens everytime the car was started up. took car to dealer and parts where replaced. old parts are not available. *tr
Sudden loss of power steering while driving vehicle. *tr
Electric power steering system failed while driving on the interstate. after stopping, shutting car off, and restarting car the power steering appears to be functional again. this happened today, as well as 2 times last week. *tr
Tl* the contact owns 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 20 mph the power the steering failed and made it difficult to control the steering wheel. within seconds, the power steering light illuminated. the contact previously noticed a burning smell in the engine area. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure; however, he replaced the engine oil. the vehicle identification number was not available. the failure and the current mileages were 78,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 45 mph he lost power steering and it became difficult to control the steering wheel. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and the power steering motor was repaired at an insurance deductible rate of $100.00. the manufacturer was notified, and a representative stated that he would be reimbursed after the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 34,790. the current mileage was 34,822.
Power steering failure. driving in curvy area, power steering went out. little control of vehicle, driving at 25 miles per hour. even in dead stop, could not turn steering. have to stop vehicle, turn off ignition and turn back on. will let you drive for limited time and then same thing occurs. afraid to drive vehicle that still having to make payments on, cost to repair too great. small children in home and ride in vehicle, afraid accident will occur and hurt my children. *tr
I am having trouble with my 2006 cobalt ls and it goes in and out from time to time. i have almost got into a couple accidents and saved myself. i think that gm should be responsible for their own actions. they should create a recall for this problem but can't because they are bankrupt. you all need to do something about that. *tr
I have had my car for 4 years and 3 times my steering wheel has locked up while i was driving. *tr
Power steering goes out randomly along with a "power steering" message in dash. requires car to be restarted to get it working again. this is a 2006 chevy cobalt with 27,xxx miles on it. gm has not set a recall for this problem, and it seems like thousands have it. if this failed while in a turn, it could cause serious injury or death. the cost to repair this is anywhere between $1,000 to $2,000. this is unacceptable. *tr
Power steering message appeared on message center; wheel became hard to turn and then there was no longer power steering. happens intermittently; when you turn the car off and back on the power steering works fine (for a short period). doesn't depend on the speed or anything i'm doing; the first time it went out i was pulling into a parking lot, now it happens when i'm on the freeway, turning, going slow, it doesn't matter. there are times i can drive to the store and it doesn't go out at all and there are times when i don't make it to the end of my street before it goes out. i have read many other complaints from people who have had the same problem and most say the entire power steering system has to be replaced to fix it even though it's generally the power steering motor that is going bad/shorting out. have to take it to dealership to find out specifically what's wrong, they said it could be "a number of problems." i haven't even had this car a year; there's 67,000 miles on it; power steering shouldn't be an issue. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt . the contact stated that whenever she turned the vehicle on the power steering locked up and this occurs also when she puts the vehicle in reverse as well. this has occured everyday where the light illuminates in the instrumental panel. the dealer was contacted and they told the contact to bring it in for diagnostic. there have been no repairs done to the vehicle. the failure mileage was 50000 and current mileage was 84729.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while the contact was driving approximately 35 mph there was a loss of power steering, followed by an engine stall. there were no warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing where the technician performed an unknown repair contributed to the steering and engine power failure. the service repair cost was $579.00. the contact received a recall notification six months after the failure occurred. the recall was under nhtsa campaign id number 10v073000 (steering: electric power assist system). the dealer refused to repair the vehicle under the recall for an unknown reason. the failure mileage was 24,000. updated 07/19/10 *bf updated 07/21/10*jb
2005 chevrolet cobalt has multiple issues. several occurred while the car was under warranty such as the ignition switch jamming, the gear shift not shifting into park, and the fuel pump leaking. the latest is with the power steering. i hear a click in the steering column, then the power steering goes out immediately and then the light on the dashboard alerts me that the power steering has failed. it does this without warning irregardless of how long the car has been running. sometimes it occurs within minutes of starting the car, other times it occurs after driving for 30 or 40 miles. many people have responded online about these complaints. all you have to do is google in "chevy cobalt power steering problems" and you will see hundreds of consumers with this problem. i called the gm customer hotline and got the run around. this problem is extremely dangerous because the power steering goes out suddenly and without enough warning. it becomes extremely difficult to maneuver. *tr
2006 chevy cobalt power steering goes out while driving. *tr
I was driving down a straight road when suddenly without warning my power steering went out. i had to pull into the nearest parking lot and stop. *tr
For the past few months i have noticed my steering wheel of my 2006 chevy cobalt shaking a lot when i drive down hills. this problem persists whether my foot is on or off the break. after the jolting got so bad, where i thought i was going to lose control of my vehicle, i took my car into my mechanic to be inspected. he informed me that my steering column was broken and my car was "a danger to drive." my mechanic recommended i call chevy to see if they would replace the steering column for free because that is not something that typically fails in any age vehicle and especially in my car which only has 47,000 miles on it. i made phone calls to chevy and they said they would not fix my vehicle for free because it was still in "working condition." my mechanic then replaced the steering column in my car ($600 later). *tr
last aug 2009 i was living my drive way and they steer wheel got stuck and i got trapped between my trees. i didn't know what happen so i just assumed it was me being a bad driver. two weeks ago i was driving in a street and the bell in the computer start ringing and gave me a message "power steer" then the steer while got stuck again. i didn't know what to do so i stop and called a towing truck to get my car and take it to my mechanic. my mechanic kept it for a day and said that cobalts 2006 and 2007 have this problem the computer does not communicate with the engine and that's what happen. i called general motors and they asked me how many miles i had in the car which is 64,000 and then they told me i had to take it to one of his dealer shops to make sure. i told the lady to be sure they were going to consider this because i have to pay and then they will decide if it was a safety issue. i did pay a lot of money and they say -you are not under guarantee- i got mad because they knew since the beginning how many miles i had. now if i turn left or right the steer wheel get stuck so i have to stop and turn off the car. after that i can drive ok. is always dangerous if i'm in a busy street or highway. to repair they want $1,000.00 that i don't have. the lady who "helped" me her name is mariana jimenez and she told the they are going to pay for a gas leak that i had in this year too. because that is a re-call. she said she will send the papers to get reimburse but she never did. the case number for the problem i have now from general motors is 71759207211. they are only recognizing the problem with the gas leaking because that was a "safety issue" how is not a safety issue driving and the steer wheel gets stuck? so my complain is for the gas leaking that i pay myself and didn't get reimburse and the current problem. the chevrolet shop wrote this in the invoice i paid "performed diag system check-u2107/u2100/co475 stored in pscm silate to ...
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the power steering warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel, then steering became difficult. the vehicle was restarted after five minutes, and then she resumed normal operation. the vehicle was taken to dealer, in which the technician concluded that she would have to pay $1000.00 to replace the steering column. no repairs were made. she is in the process of contacting the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 29,800 .the current mileage 29,826. bl updated 10/20/09 *cn the dealer made the repairs. updated 10/22/09.*jb
I have a 2006 chevy cobalt lt. as i was driving down the interstate all of a sudden my power steering light came across the display and i lost control of my car (i was going around a curve). it took all i had to keep it on the road. as i was cranking on the wheel (very hard as there was no power steering) suddenly it started to work! me and the 2 children in my car went into the ditch. thank goodness no one was seriously injured! chevrolet needs to recall this issue before it kills someone! the power steering goes off and on. i am considering a lawsuit myself. *tr
We have a 2006 chevy cobalt. the power steering goes out on it randomly. this could be a very dangerous thing to happen for a new driver. from what i have read online this a big issue and there should be a recall on the vehicle. *tr
I have a 2006 chevy cobalt ls i got it like a year ago and it has a really bad power steering problem when i got it from the dealer it was good for a couple of months. then the power steering started to fail i was going to moreno valley through the curves and it just shut of on me so i had to pull over. so i turned of the car and waited. when i turned it back on it worked for like ten minutes then it shut of again. now i just turn on my car and as soon as i press the gas the power steering turns off. it is really hard to park and to control it. i tried to take it back to the dealer but my warranty was expired. my cobalt is not the only one with the problem i did some research and alot of people have the exact same complaint as me. i think this car should be recalled for the safety of the driver and the pedestrians. *tr
I was driving my 2006 cobalt on a straight roadway, the power steering went out and was very hard to steer, it does that very frequently now and my pregnant wife is afraid to drive it because of its defect. i think chevrolet should have to fix this before someone gets hurt or killed because they don't want to back up there product, i think a recall would be very handy for this situation. *tr
I have a 2006 chevrolet cobalt and the power steering continues to go out and the check engine light comes on. this can be very dangerous. the odd thing is i can be at a stoplight and turn the car off and back on and the power steering works fine but then down the road it does it again.*tr
While driving a 2006 chevy cobalt on a highway, the power steering went out (and power steering light came on), make steering very difficult. when i turned the engine off and back on, the light stayed off for short time then came back on, and vehicle had no power steering. i took the cobalt to dealer, and they discovered fault code c0475 electric steering motor circuit failure, lost communication with ecm. the dealer removed and replaced the steering motor at a cost of $497.85. *tr
While turning or sloxwng down my car shakes violently and pulls to the left. i recently put new tires, alignment and rotation thinking this would solve the problem and it has not. it feels as though my steering wheel is going to shake off. the dealership suggested the new tires and it has not helped. this is a huge safety concern and something needs to be done. *tr
Power steering keeps going out after 5 minutes of driving, makes car hard to steer and control. *tr
1. my wife and i purchased a 2006 vehicle for my 20 year old daughter roughly a year ago. everything was fine for the first 9 months. after that one day when my daughter was driving the vehicle it began to shake and the power steering light began to flash and she had no control over the vehicle, she had to pull over, turn off the vehicle and restart it and the car was fine until she got home. everytime you drive the car literally every 2 miles you have to pull over and turn the car off and start it again, it is extremely dangerous and a hassle. we took the car to the dealership and they said because we didn't purchase a warranty it would cost 2,000 dollars to fix. due to the poor economy we cannot afford to fix the car, but yet we put down 3,000 on the vehicle and we continue to be stuck with 350 car payments every month for a vehicle we cannot even drive. something needs to be done about this car, we are extremely worried about anyone that has one of these cars. the car is not worth the money we are spending on it. we have no idea what to do about the situation and we are in a horrible position. *tr
I have 2006 chevy cobalt and have recently had problems with the power steering. the light turns on blinks then completely shuts off your steering, barely allowing someone to turn your car to safety. it works after a while yet continues to happen when you drive. i heard it is the power steering motor. gm really needs to recall this part in that i hope that i, as well as others, do not get into an accident because of this problem. *tr
