Chevy cobalt 2006 power steering fail in ma car very danger, please may investigation. before somebody dies in this car. *tr

While driving a beeping sound came on and the words power steering appeared below the speedometer and the power steering gave out immediately. i was initially caught off guard but luckily i was only traveling at about 25 mph and there was no other traffic or kids on the street. i turn the car off and the power steering goes back to normal. again while driving without warning three beeps and the words power steering appear and the power steering gives out immediately. if this a recurring problem with the chevy cobalt hopefully it can get resolved before there is loss of life or serious injuries. *tr

I have a 2006 cobalt ltz, and the power steering keeps going out when, i drive down the road, also i have shaking and noise, and i had my grandchild in the car, and the power steering went out which could have had a wreck...this is a very bad problem, also i have shaking and noise, when i drive down the road...........please help!! *tr

Power steering system failure while driving. restarting engine will restore power steering for a short time. the car alerts with warning chime sound and a dashboard message "power steering". this problem can happen every few minutes or, rarely, it may not happen at all during a short trip. this problem first happened in late 2009 on a very low mileage vehicle ( less than 9,300 miles to date). *tr

Beginning in november 2009 the power steering on my 2006 cobalt would go out intermittently while i was driving. in one instance it actually happened during a turn and i almost had a head-on collision with the vehicle in the opposite lane. by the second week of january 2010 the power steering was going out two to three times a day. as of this week it almost never works. when i called my dealer they refused to acknowledge this is a pervasive problem. they suggested i bring the car in and pay $95 to have them asses the issue. i have not done that yet and based on all the other complaints i have read i probably will not do that until chevrolet takes action to repair the defect. i consider it a safety issue because it is easy to lose control of the car while trying to make a turn. now that it is out most of the time it limits how far i can drive the vehicle because it is very tiring to maintain control over it for long periods. *tr

I had a 2006 cobalt that started having power steering problems shorting after reaching 36,000 miles. one time i was turning onto a road from a parking lot. the power steering went out and i could barely steer the car into the proper lane and avoid an accident as a car in the opposite lane was approaching. this is a dangerous engineering problem with cobalt. i have not had any satisfactory reply from chevrolet customer service on this problem. i believe, judging from many other complaints, that chevrolet needs to issue a recall on this, or at least repair the problem at one cost to buyers. thank you. *tr

Sudden loss of power steering. *tr

The first incident occurred while i was exiting the freeway, the words "power steering" showed on the display and there was a beeping noise. immediately my steering wheel felt like it locked on me and i had to put forth an extreme amount of effort to keep the car from running into another car next to me. since then, it has happened about one per week. it has gradually increased to a few times each driving trip, with most of those occurances at dangerous times (while making a sharp turn, while changing lanes, while merging, while going around a curve, while driving through an intersection). recently, i almost collided with pedestrians, including a child, while in a shopping center parking lot. i also hurt my wrist while trying to steer it while it "locked." i am going to have the vehicle repaired, but until then, i am not driving it as it is very dangerous. *tr

I have a 2006 chevy cobalt. i was on my way to work when the car dinged and i look down to see that it was saying the my power steering was out. i turn the car off and restarted it and then it went away. i thought that it was nothing until it came back on the next time i drove my car. i then went and researched it on the internet when i found out that there is a lot people having the same issue. i am one if the ones that can not afford the pay for this problem to be fixed. when are they going to do a recall on the this problem. *tr

As i was driving the "power steering" light came on. caused me to loose my steering while i was in the middle of turning, i almost hit another car and i would have if they did not swerve to miss me. the fact that the power steering is now electric is complete '!@#$% in my opinion. i went out, bought power steering liquid to add to it like a normal car and instead i found out i have to take it back to the dealer to have it serviced? this is very inconvenient for my busy schedule and i expected more out of a gm car. *tr

Car has always pulled to the right. on night of november 13, 2009, i was making a right turn going approximately 5 miles per hour. next thing i knew i had no control over the steering and went up over a curb and could not get off it or steer away from it. *tr

While driving my 2006 chevy cobalt, the power steering light came on and immediately i lost my power steering. i was on a secondary road and almost collided head on with an on coming vehicle. for a while you could turn off the ignition and restart the vehicle and the power steering would engage, but as of now, i have complete malfunction and have not had power steering in almost 4 month! despite numerous complaints(900,000) gmac has yet to acknowledge a problem or recall the vehicle. the repair is in excess of 800.00 dollars. the car is extremely hard to handle and a danger on the road. *tr

The power steering in my 2006 chevy cobalt gave out after three years of ownership without warning. since it is an electronic power steering system, there was no warning, just a sudden total loss of power steering while i was driving. the vehicle became extremely difficult to turn and this created an extremely hazardous situation. i took the car to my mechanic and he replaced the power steering motor which then fixed the problem. *cn

I have a 06 chevy cobalt and the power steering goes out after a couple of minutes of driving. since the chevy cobalt has an all electrical power steering system it is very expensive to fix the problem. there have several cases where this same problem has occurred in the same make and model. i feel its a factory defect. it is very unsafe to drive with your power steering out. i had a close in counter with getting in a car accident due to the power steering. *tr

Power steering has been defective 2 times. *tr

I have had alot of problems with my car, 1st my radio went out, it just went out and it would only work when i held the power button down and there were always things flashing on the screen, so after a few weeks of this happening my car wouldn't start, i would get it jumped and the other person wouldn't even have to start their car to jump mine it only took a second. after having to replace my battery it was discovered that my radio was drawing too much energy even when the car was turned off and it was causing my battery to die, so now i have no radio in my car i had to have it unhooked. then while i was still dealing with the battery issue, my power steering started going out, i thought this was some how related to my battery so when i got that fixed i thought it would get better it didn't. i will be driving along and the chime will go off and it says power steering and it goes out. i wrote gm a letter with my concerns and complaints, and after having it looked at by the dealership and being told this is nothing i did to my car, gm refused to help me with my car they said parts wear out and i have to get it fixed myself, i have had estimated done it is going to cost about $750.00 for a new steering column. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the power steering failed while driving 30 mph and she was unable to control the vehicle. the contact had to drive onto the emergency lane and turn the vehicle off and then back on so that it would reset itself. the dealer replaced the entire steering wheel assembly. the chevrolet manufacturer was notified before the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 52,664.

Still having problems with steering on 2006 chevy cobalt. power steering goes out randomly if it is stopped recranked it will reset. on going problem for myself and lots of other cobalt owners. i have searched many online forums and found others that have the same problem. gm needs to recall this and fix what they know is wrong. two websites are fixya.com and chevy cobalt forum, please do something before there is death or injuries involved. *tr

Hi i drive a 2006 chevrolet cobalt with around 60,000 miles. recently i was driving down the road and a message appeared in the display reading "power steering." seconds later the power steering quit working. i was turning into a gas station and almost ran over someone because of this. i parked the car and shut it off. after checking the fuse box and seeing no obvious signs of what could be the problem i started my car and the message was gone and the power steering worked fine. thinking that this may have been an intermittent glitch i drove back home and sure enough, 2 miles down the road the message re-appeared and the power steering stopped working. after doing some research this appears to be a consistent issue among the majority of cobalt owners. this is a safety hazard if i've ever seen one. how many close calls is it going to take for gm to repair this obvious problem? or is it actually going to take a few deaths for someone to open their eyes and realize there's a serious issue at hand? *tr

My sons 2006 chevy cobalt power steering would go out while he was driving he would have to pull off to the side of the road turn the car off start it back and it would be ok and it would happen again over and over . we went back to the chevy dealer and had it fixed paying our own money. *cn

When driving car power steering shuts off randomly. this makes the car very difficult to steer and control. first instance was 11/7/09. this now happens quite frequently (2-4) times everytime i drive the car. doesn't matter if the car is idling at a red light or driving 50 mph. at this time no accidents have resulted but it's only a matter of time. have not contacted dealer or mechanic yet as i have read and heard that this is a wide-spread problem with this particular vehicle and would like to see a recall done. *tr

My 2006 chevrolet cobalt suffered sudden loss of power steering assist while traveling on highway. the effort to steer the vehicle increased to where i could not do more then guide the vehicle to the shoulder of the highway. when the auto was restarted the power steering returned to normal. i continued on my trip with caution. within 10 minutes the problem recurred. i had the auto towed to a chevrolet dealer where they replaced the power steering assist motor. i have driven much larger autos that have had power steering failures and have never encountered anything where the amount of effort required to guide the auto was so great. if this had been someone who was less experienced or who did not possess the physical strength of a full grown adult male the situation may have been catastrophic. *tr

While driving car suddenly pulls hard to the right or left. it happens sporadically steering problem. *tr

2006 chevrolet cobalt has power steering failure and i own one and there is no recall on this problem . my guess is no one has died from it , yet . the steering is electrical instead of hydraulic . every time i go down the rod within two minutes the warning buzzer and the dash lights up and i lose all steering . *tr

I just bought a 2006 chevy cobalt and on my way from the dealers, the "power steering" light illuminated on the communication center. i then looked online and found out that this is an ongoing safety issue. does the gm company know about this issue, and are they now recalling and fixing this problem? *tr

On more than one occasion the steering has stopped working. its intermittent and unpredictable and can happen at any speed. *tr

When driving my dash displayed a power steering message. then the car starts to jump and then check engine light comes on. then i lose power steering. when we took it to the dealer (twice) they could not find the problem. this has happened about 5 times and did not happen until my car had about 900 miles over the 60,000 warranty miles. my car is a chevy cobalt 2006. *tr

My power steering light came on only every now and then and now it is a constant thing. the steering wheel locks up very hard to turn. i am scared that the steering will completely fail one day while i have my 6mnth old baby in the car and we will get in an accident...pls help me. *tr

Power steering keeps going out. several times while driving. once while steering i had a very hard time turning and a car was coming fast on incoming traffic. this is a terrible safety hazard and i see tons of complaints out on the web. why isn't something being done about this? is someone waiting for people to die? this is so widespread, i really don't understand why no one has done anything. *tr

While driving the power steering would display on the control panel and i was unable to turn the wheel. this happened at various speeds. once while attempting to drive six miles on a busy roadway my husband and i had to pull off the road over 20 times to turn the car off and give the time for the power steering to reset itself only to drive a piece further and the incident to occur again. eventually, having to tow the vehicle home. we took the vehicle to the dealership in november and it was over 800 for repair. they replaced the steering column and we haven't had any other problems so far. *tr

I have owned my 2006 chevy cobalt since 2008. starting in 2009 all the way until now 2014 i have had issues with the car that are related to the ignition switch recall. i took my car in to the chevy dealer to take care of the ignition switch recall on november 5, 2014. i got my car back the same day, they replaced the ignition switch and gave me two new keys. surprise! two days later on november 7, 2014 my car again had the exact same problems related to the ignition switch recall that it did before i took it in for the recall fix. hence, chevy's "recall ignition switch fix" does not solve the problem with these cars! my car still does the following things even after the ignition switch fix that is supposed to solve these problems. whenever it pleases it will lose electrical power and turn off the engine, leaving me stuck in the middle of a busy highway, this has happened on numerous occasions!! as if that isn't bad enough there's more! the power steering light flashes, the check engine light comes on, the service airbag light comes on, the gauges on the dash completely stop working properly the speedometer needle goes haywire moving from 0 mph to 60 mph back and forth non-stop when i'm not even accelerating to those speeds. the rpm gauge does the exact same thing. the car jolts forward uncontrollably, like it is having a problem shifting especially when the rpm is between 2000 and 3000. when you go to brake you have to slam the brakes all the way down because you lose your normal braking power the car skids as you're braking and continues to jolt forward uncontrollably. oh and on top of all of this sometimes the power steering completely goes out leaving you with all of the problems mentioned above and you can't steer properly! something needs to be done immediately! the ignition switch recall fix does not work! these cars should not be on the road period. *tr

I have a 2006 chevy cobalt ls. it has been giving me several problems. i have been fixing one thing after another on my car. my car only have 46,000 miles. that is good for it being a 2006. i have problems with my brakes. i have replaced the master cylinder and now i have to replace the brake booster. but the worst problem that i am having now is the power steering. when im driving out of nowhere the dash light up saying power steering. when this happens it is extremely hard to turn. especially if you are going at a slow speed. i have even been in an accident because of this. the only way to get my power steering to work normally is to turn the car off and turn it back on. at first it would work fine for awhile. but now it happens right when i start to drive. the dealership said it could cost over $1500 to fix the problem. i can barely afford to fix these other problems that i am having. i cant afford to pay $1500 to fix this problem. i was online looking to see if i can find a cheaper price. this is when i saw that there are hundreds of other people that have and still have the same problem that i am having. this is how i know that it is not something that i have done. with so many people having this problem, they need to fix it. *tr

I have a 06 chevy cobalt with intermittent power steering failures. it fails after approx. 20 of daily driving with no prior warning. it becomes difficult to control and i consider it dangerous. gm is aware of the problems but is not being proactive to offer a solution or recall. i do not have the money to get it repaired but even so, repairs are also done with faulty parts. the car has 65k miles. *tr

I own a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. approximately three months ago my vehicle alerted me that my power steering is no longer engaged. it first occurred while i was driving through my neighborhood. the power steering went out all of the sudden, and i was forced to operate the steering wheel without the power steering. originally it occurred once a week, but for the past month my power steering has been going out everyday. it usually occurs while i'm driving less than 45 miles per hour, but on three different occasions it has gone out on the interstate while i'm traveling 70 miles an hour. the only way i know how to fix the problem is to put my car in park, turn off the ignition, and then restart my vehicle. when i restart my vehicle the power steering is engaged again. *tr

2006 chevy cobalt steering failed taking a sharp turn causing car to cross centerline hitting another car head on, son suffered a very bad broken leg requiring a rod from knee to ankle. *tr

My electronic steering is no longer working. as soon as i start my car, it last for a few seconds and then it goes out and i have to steer unassisted. this is very difficult to do at low speeds. it impedes my manueverability especially with respect to parking and parallel parking is impossible. my wife can longer drive this car since it requires the strength of hercules to steer car. *cn

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 25 to 30 mph on normal road conditions the "power steering" warning light indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. immediately, there was a loss of power steering. the driver pulled over to the side of the road which required higher effort to turn the steering wheel. the engine was turned off including the illumination of warning light indicator. the vehicle was restarted and resumed normal operation. the identical failures occurred on a separate occasion. the vehicle has not been repaired at this time. the failure mileage was 43,000. the vin was unavailable.

My power steering is going in and out. my car is only a few years old. i went on the computer and did some research and i am not the only one that is having problems. apparently there is some kind of defect because a ton of people are having this problem. i am one of the lucky ones that did wreck or cause injury to anyone. i am doing this complaint in order for this not to happen to others and maybe gm will do a recall on this defect. *tr

I have a 2006 chevy cobalt and the power steering has completely gone. its 1000 dollars to fix it and i am having constant problems with this car. *tr

Power steering is off and you have to put all your might to make turns and u-turns. *tr

Tl*the contact owns 2006 chevrolet cobalt. since october of 2009 she experienced failure with the steering wheel. the failure occurred at various speeds including approximately 20 mph and she had difficulty controlling the steering wheel. the power steering illuminated each time the failure occurred. the dealer attempted to diagnose the failure 10 times and was unsuccessful; however, they replaced the ecm computer system. the contact paid $600 for the repairs; however, the failure continued to occur. the manufacturer will be notified. the failure mileage was 88,000 and the current mileage was 90,000.

The chevy cobalt has serious but intermittent issues with the power steering. the instrument panel will display a "power steering" warning. sometimes this is the extent of the problem but often the steering wheel will lock up or become difficult to turn. this happens while driving and with no "trigger" that i can identify. the recommended remedy is to replace the column, but even the new columns have the same problem. we first had the issue at about 30,000 miles, the column was replaced and now, at about 75,000 miles, we are having the same issue. my research indicates the same problem across the country for most model years and beginning as early as 4000 miles. this issue is life threatening and must be remedied as soon as possible. when the steering locks up it is nearly impossible to turn the steering wheel. sometimes the warning message is there and sometimes it does not. a rattling noise can be heard sometimes as well, along with the smell of something getting to hot. i believe a recall is in order due the extensiveness and severity of this defect. i sincerely hope no one is killed before a lasting resolution to this issue can be found. *tr

Power steering goes out on my car without a warning..... while driving. *tr

Power steering locked up while driving on a road at around 35-40mph. and the car ran into a rock on the side of the road and flipped upside-down. there was no severe injury but the car was reported as total loss. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. when driving 30 mph he lost power steering without any prior warnings. as a consequence steering became very difficult. a mechanic concluded that the electrical power steering failed. the failure and current mileages were 80,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while driving the electronic power steering warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel. she then began experiencing difficult steering. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, whom advised her that the failure was unheard of. there was no warranty on her vehicle. the failure mileage was 131,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 40 mph the power steering warning light illuminates on the instrument control panel, and then the steering locks. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, and he was advised that the entire steering column needed to be replaced at an expense of $2500.00. there was no warranty on the vehicle. the failure mileage was 43,000.

Electronic power steering goes out, first happen in oct, had it checked and was told it is a motor circuit that is on the steering column and would cost $1000 to $1500 to fix because they have to take column out to get to it, it goes out driving down the road at anytime one or 2 time a day, so you have to stop and turn off motor and restart and it will work for a few more miles or not! it makes it very hard to steer and i cant keep driving it like this so am taking it in to repair, i don't really want to pay for something i think chevy should fix that a lot of cars are having but don't have a choice as i cant keep driving it this way. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while reversing out of the driveway he heard a thud, and then steering became loose. the vehicle was taken to a local repair facility and the mechanic noticed that the steering rod was loose. the vehicle was in the process of being repaired. the current and failure mileages were 82,500.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. intermittently while driving the power steering warning light illuminates on the instrument control panel, and then the vehicle loses power steering. as a consequence steering because extremely difficult. the vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer, because she will have to pay a $100.00 for a diagnostic fee. the failure and current mileages were 80,000. updated 12/07/09. *lj updated 12/08/09.*jb
