I currently own a 2006 chevrolet cobalt lt 2.2l. recently as i am driving the power steering message appears on my dash and the power steering goes completely out. i have to try my hardest to navigate the vehicle off the road and turn it off, and upon restarting the vehicle it is fine again. sometimes this occurs frequently and others it can go for a few minutes in between. the car has 70,000 miles on it and is in good condition and this situation occurred completely spur of the moment. the problem causes control of the vehicle to become very very hard and in many conditions could cause serious harm due to accidents resulting from being unable to turn the wheel and maintain control on the road. this problem is completely unrelated to any faults of the owner as the system is electronic and does not require maintenance. *tr
I have two issues with my 2006 chevy cobalt: 1. aug 2009 the power steering went out completely while driving, rendering it nearly impossible to navigate. it works everytime i turn on the car for approximately 1-3 minutes and goes out everytime it's driven. i've been quoted that it will cost me $565 just for the part which must be ordered from a gm dealer only since the warranty ran out at 50k miles, the power steering went out on me at around 50500 miles. just past the mark. this is a very dangerous issue that seriously needs to be addressed and recalled by gm for i've read hundreds of complaints from others who drive the same make and year. 2) the second issue is that the key locks in the ignition at least once a week making it impossible to start the car. please look into these problems with this car for they can be very dangerous before someone loses their life over it. *tr
While driving, my 2006 chevrolet cobalt's power steering light comes on and the wheel tightens to the point where it becomes to hard to drive. it happens at any time while driving. i have been driving straight and the light comes on and i have to pull over and turn the car off and back on to reset it inorder to drive. in the book it says that if the vehicle goes through to many hard turns while driving it tightens to slow the driver and stop them from driving irresponsibly. since the problem occurred without fault to my driving i took it to the dealer and had the electronic power steering module and motor replaced it worked fine for one full day. then the problem came back. i then took the car back to the dealer and they said that the power steering module had to be replaced again. i have looked online at others complaints on topix and ask.com and many others are having the same problems with the same system. this problem poses a serious safety issue since it happens instantly, there is no forewarning the power steering light comes on and the wheel tightens all at one time. it is especially unsafe when turning the vehicle because all you can do is keep straight or stop and turn off the vehicle. *tr
I have a 2006 chevy cobalt with power steering that stop working. *tr
I have a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. it has the problem where in the middle of driving it will randomly shut off the power steering. the steering wheel will even lock up at times. i have almost been in several accidents because of this. it is my only means of transportation. i am stuck with this car, because it costs around 1100 dollars to fix! i searched the internet and there is a countless amount of people that are having this problem. i fear for my life every day that i have to drive this car. now this car has 44k miles on it and it is just out of warranty. i do not want any one else killed because of this poor manufacturing. if there is a class action lawsuit, i want to be involved! also, this issue happens almost everyday for the past month and continues. once i pull over to the side of the road (if i can) and shut the car off then turn it back on, the power steering resumes working and i can drive for a while again. *tr
I am the owner of a 2006 chevy cobalt with approximately 47000 miles. recently, my wife was driving to the grocery store with my two small children when the power steering went out. fortunately, she was able to gain control of the vehicle and bring it to a stop on the side of the road. after turning the car off and then back on the power steering returned to normal. this has happened several more times after the incident. my wife was able to get the car to a mechanic who informed her that the electronic power steering motor is going bad and that we were not the first to have this problem. we also found that this car has a recall on its fuel injectors as well as the head liner. currently no recall on the power steering problem. the car is scheduled for repair on august 22nd. *tr

The events leading up to this failure were none. i have a 2006 chevy cobalt and my electrical powering steering went out on a trip with my two children. i am so upset about this. the "power steering" light came on exactly one minute before this happened on the highway. i had no notice and had to pull hard off the highway and restart the car. i took it to the chevy dealership (without a warranty) and it is going to cost $2000. i do not have this kind of money and also still owe $10,500 on a car that is dangerous to drive my children in. the entire steering column will have to be replaced is what the chevy dealership said. *tr
I got in my 2006 chevy cobalt car this past saturday and was driving down the hill that i live on when i reach the curb and need to turn and the steering wheel would not turn and locked while driving. there was a car coming the other direction and i almost hit it because my steering wheel locked. the steering wheel is still locked and i haven't been back in it to drive. this car does not have power steering fluid it is all electronic. *tr

2006 chevy cobalt. at approximately 80,000 total miles, while driving, the power steering quit. i received a visual message from the car monitor advising "power steering". the car could be steered, but without power steering. after turning the car off and restarting, the power steering works, but at some point within 1 mile of driving, the power steering quits. this happens every time i drive. it is dangerous as it impacts my ability to steer and control the car, and it quits without warning. driving in inclement weather is especially hazardous. upon taking the car to my chevy dealer, i was advised repair would be over $1,000. *tr

My power steering went out on my 2006 chevrolet cobalt. i was on the expressway and it went out. if i pull over and turn the car off, let it sit, turn back on, it will work fine for a random period of time before it goes out again. i almost got into an accident. now it keeps going out. i did some online research and found that hundreds and hundreds of people are having this problem. this is a very dangerous problem. *tr
While driving my 2006 chevrolet cobalt, the power steering message would appear on the led screen and the power steering would fail, reverting back to manual steering. fortunately, i was able to control the vehicle and avoid driving underneath a tractor trailer, but others may not be as fortunate. i read several hundred postings on a website last night with other people experiencing the same problems. gm will not acknowledge that there is a problem with the vehicles steering, or potentially a defect prompting a recall. once you turn the car off and restart it, the power steering works again and then the problem will repeat itself again sometimes within seconds of several minutes. this has been occurring for 3 days now and getting worse. i am waiting to take the vehicle to a gm dealer for evaluation, and i'm already being told that this is a non-covered warranty problem, costing around $2,000 to fix. *tr
1.no particular event led up to the failure - it started suddenly. 2. the power steering fault flashes then you lose power steering, when you stop the car and turn it off it resets itself, it started sporadically but has been steadily increasing in frequency, nothing has happened yet but am afraid for wife to drive car - especially with the children. 3. have checked for any recalls, etc. apparently this is becoming a common problem - i am going to check with my local dealer but do not have a lot of hope because the vehicle is about 10,000 mile out of warranty. *tr

I have a 2006 chevy cobalt that is under 40000 miles. the power steering message comes on and the i lose control of the vehicle not being able to turn the wheel. this does not happen while i am at a stop it happens while i am driving in traffic. when i turn the car off it will work fine for a while and then i lose the power steering again. i took it to the mechanic and they said that they couldn't find anything wrong, but as soon i had left it started it again. i went back to the mechanic and they said that i need to replace the steering column and that will cost over $700. i have only had this car for 3 years and have kept up on all routine maintenance. this is ?!@#$%!!! i looked online and there are numerous people who have had the same complaints about this car. and as usual my warranty was just expired. this car is dangerous and i can no longer feel safe driving on the road. *tr
