Tl*the contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. while driving approximately 80 mph the steering wheel became stiff. the vehicle was driven onto the emergency lane but would not shut off. within a few minutes the steering wheel began to function normally. the failure occurred three times and was taken to an authorized dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 114,000.

The dealer also made a life threatening mistake by screwing in the power steering pipe and losing power steering. this caused a bad noise and a life threatening situation with my car. *tr

I have been having problems with my 2000 volvo s80 hesitating as if it's not getting any gas when first beginning to drive it everyday. i have complained about this problem since purchasing this vehicle but the volvo repair shop have not been able to fix the problem and they say they do not know what the problem is. also my check engine light, stc light, and abs light keeps coming on. i have also noticed that when these lights come on my car becomes hard to steer sometimes. after checking into this problem i have found that many other volvo s80 's built around the same time as mine are having the same problems. i have complained about my car suspension making weird noises since having this vehicle and the volvo repair shop says they can not find any thing wrong but when enquiring with others who own volvo s80's, built around the same time as mine, many are saying they are having this problem also. the below information asks for an incident date but the problem with my 2000 volvo s80 hesitating and being hard to steer occur often probably over 100 times. *nm

1. following download of recall software performance has been vastly reduced and now only achieves 8.2 mpg. 2. the abs control module functions intermittently and usually in the failure mode. abs brakes do not function properly-replacement $950 3. while backing (cold engine), brakes fail to stop the car for several seconds (feet). 4. the vehicle stalls mostly on turns but on straight away. a. car now shuts off approx 6-8 times while driving, dangerous while driving at interstate/highway speeds. it "surges" forward and the lights (dash and headlights) fade - vehicle stalls with no power steering or power brakes. 5. cruise control fails ?? up hills/down hills shuts down. now is inoperable. 6. the electronic door locks malfunction intermittently. 7. following error codes display and total mileage, trip 1 & 2 mileage displays default to ?? --------?? and mileage does not log on the odometer: a.brake failure stop asap b.coolant level low stop asap c.abs failure / service required d.stc service required e.power steering failure - service required f.emission system service required g.stop safely and restart engine h.alarm system service required i.alarm triggered j.emission system service required k.no oil pressure stop asap l.check engine. *nm the ball joint, driver side window motor, sunroof switch were replaced. numerous bulb replacements and replacement of mass flow sensor. the cooling fan malfunctioned. the abs control module would function intermittently which would cause the abs to not function. the power steering failed. the vehicle will completely shut off while driving. the cruise control was inconsistent, the vehicle would loose power with the cruise activated. the electronic doors malfunctioned, the fob does not always open the door and at times when closing the driver side door. updated 12/15/06. *jb

Whilie traveling to illinois from kansas, the power steering on my 2000 volvo s80 suddenly gave out. i stopped at the first available exit and checked the fluid level, which was empty. i then added 24 fl. oz. of power steering fluid and that corrected the problem for about 5-10 minutes. i ended up driving the remainder of the trip with no power steering. it appears that the leak is coming from the area of the power steering servo located at the lower end of the steering wheel rod. car was taken in today to the shop for repairs. the car has 34,000 miles on it, and is in prestine condition otherwise. i have seen other complaints regarding the same problem and i feel that a recall is certainly in order.*ak

My wife was driving home from work and noticed that the car was making a squealing noise as she made right and left hand turns. when she got home i checked the power steering reservoir and found that it was empty. there was no warning of this happening, there was no fluid on the floor of the garage. i immediately purchased power steering fluid and filled the reservoir. the next day the floor was covered with fluid. i contacted my former volvo dealer and asked if they could look at the problem and was told that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. they recommended that i take to a local repair shop that specializes in import cars. they identifed the problem as the rack & pinion and said not to drive the car as it was unsafe. i authorized them to begin the repair process and was advised that the cost would be about $1000.00 dollars. when contacting the customer service department of volvo north america i was told that they could not assist because the car was not in warrenty. the vehicle has 16,532 miles and has been garaged kept and maintained by the previous volvo dealer where the vechicle was purchased. i hardly think that any vehicle with such low mileage should have to have the rack & pinion steering replaced. i am very disapointed with the approach that volvo has taken to assist with this problem and have seen where other owners have experienced this same problem. when you pay $42,000 dollars for a car, you certainly expect that it will not require costly maintenance such as this with such low mileage.*ak

Took my car in and found that rack & pinion needed replacing. was advised by mechanic that volvo dealer told them there is a nationwide backorder on this part and it is not available.*ak sounds to me like there is a recurring problem with the rack & pinion on the volvo s80 (mine is a 2000 model year.

I had a major leak in my 2000 volvo s80 power steering rack at 36000miles. called the factory and they said there was a backorder on the part and they were not sure when they could replace the part. seems there must be a recurrent problem here and i am wondering if a recall is in order. volvo declined to help pay for the repair/replacement.*ak

Continuous air bag warning light. car dies on road. get fixed, then air bag light comes on again. ran into a person who volvo airbags deployed without reason and she was injured. after exiting highway, car "died." i am lucky to be alive as the wheel stiffened up & i had to rely on the parking brake to slow down. had to get a "jump start" to get home. car is unsafe. returned to volvo. also had steering wheel that shakes at higway speeds, alarm that went off while driving, & wouldn't start, remote door opener doesn't always work, service engine light flickered on & off -- said it was an emissions problem.

Mounting bolt on rear of left front hub/spindle assembly has backed out and jammed into drive shaft causing left wheel to lock up and twice causing near collisions. has occured on three occasions. on third occasion, manufacturer has refused to accept responsibility. also severe and violent at times occasional clunking from left front of vehicle that has been seen by dealer 5 times without correction. dt

Consumer states while driving 60 mph the engine shut causing lost of power steering. mr

While driving to work i heard a clunking sound coming from my steering wheel as i was going over the freeway overpass the steering wheel stuck, i yanked on it as hard as i could until it moved. i got off the freeway immediately and pulled over. i was scared and crying, i sat there turning the steering wheel about 15 minutes. i continued very slow to work approx. another 10 miles making sure that when i had to turn i did it very slowly. i called exclusively volvo informed them of what had occurred and i wanted my car towed in to be checked. i contacted my husband informed him of what happened and he decided thar instead of towing the car he would come and get the car since the dealer wasn't that far. later that morning the service manager called and said " the bolt came off the air bag" and informed me of the approx. cost. i could not believe that they would charge me anything, it was nothing that i did to cause the bolt to come loose. fred had no answers as to why this occurred, he did agree that this was something that should not of happened yet he was not concerned about my safety or the publics safety. i told him to fix my car and save all and any parts no matter how big or small. i contacted mr. rojas the general manager of the service dept. and explained the situation to him, he had no answers as to what could of happened and he as fred offered no indication that they would take any measures to try and find out. when i picked up my car i asked fred exactly what was done and where was the parts, he informed me that they screwed the same bolt back on and dusted off the air bag. i told him that was unacceptable because the bolt came off for a reason, all the hardware including the air bag should of been changed and the situation looked into, fred's response was, "it's just like if the bolt came off your license plate we would put it back on." i responded, my entire license plate can fall off and it would not endanger my life or the publics.*ak

Car has has many returns to dealer in first 20,000 miles for mechanical problems. no safety defect listed. *ak

Steering wheel is not solid. when initially accelerating the wheel gives a very scary recoil. this vehicle has been at the dealership twice, with only 2200 miles. the dealer forced me to wait 1.5 weeks to have the situation repaired - i am worried that the vehicle will malfunction causing me and my family bodily harm. *ak
