Vehicle lost power and shut off while driving on the street at approximately 20 mph. i had driven about 1 block on this street after having turned onto it from another street. when the car died, "steering wheel locked" displayed on dash panel. car would not start, steering wheel wouldn't move beyond about 1" to the right. message would display "steering wheel still locked" or "move steering wheel." after 40 minutes of this rotation of messages and trying to start the vehicle, moved the steering wheel up and down. car finally started but only for 3 seconds. battery light would come on. was able to start the car several times doing this and moving it 30 feet to safely park on the side of the road. temperature outside was about 30 degrees f. for about 1 month prior to this, i would periodically hear a ticking sound after removing the key from the ignition. after the ticking stopped, a message would display on the dash panel "steering column locked. visit workshop!" it was extremely cold when this happened, but it didn't happen every time i turned off the car, and the car started fine each time after. outside temp ...
After replacing my car battery on 2010 vw cc, the red steering wheel icon appeared on the dash followed by 3 chimes to make known of problem. the steering wheel lost all power steering. prior to occurance there was never any whining noise, abnormal shaking that could point to a problem with the steering rack. after researching i found others with the same issue and no easy fix but to tow to the shop and get a ridiculous quote on parts and labor for the replacement of the steering rack.
Horn, steering wheel buttons, power steering and driver side airbag are not working as a result of a faulty clock spring.
Car hesitates erratically and unpredictably when accelerating most noticeably from a dead stop, and at slow speeds while turning. attempting to accelerate from a stop to cross a street in busy traffic the car will just sit unresponsive for seconds and barely accelerate and then unpredictably accelerate. due to the vehicle being the r-line, it drifts all over the road. i have had 4 wheel alignments on the car with only 6400 miles on it.
My vw has been hard to start and getting the steering lock fault warning. i understand there was a voluntary recall, but i was the original owner and do not remember getting the recall notice.
The second time in one week i lost power steering while driving on a city street. loss of power steering due to clock spring malfunction? if that occurs while driving on a highway it very dangerous to me and other motorists. i purchase this vehicle 9 months ago.
Steering wheel began to click when turning any direction mid-trip. vehicle was in motion and had been in motion for approx 30 minutes when issue began. all steering wheel buttons, including cruise control, no longer worked. air bag malfunction light illuminated. dealer stated clock spring had malfunctioned, issue was repaired. noted that cruise control buttons continued to malfunction post-repair dealer claims 'coincidence' with malfunction, putting cost on customer to repair. .
Update june 2019 - now my car has 53,000 miles. my replaced clock spring has failed again. no horn, or steering wheel controls and the airbag light is on. this is 8 months/10 miles after i had it replaced. this is a safety issue. i am requesting that dot nhtsa investigate a safety issue with clock spring part on my 2015 vw passat, which controls both the air bags and the horn. i purchased the car new in sept 2015. i started my car with 42,500 miles and the airbag light came on and stayed on. the vehicle was stationary in a flat parking lot the first time i noticed the air bag light. when i drove the vehicle and turned the steering wheel there were clicking noises coming from the steering wheel area. when i got home, i googled a couple possible causes and scheduled the vehicle in to a mechanic. before i could get vehicle in for service, the horn and other steering wheel controls went out. i was left without airbags and a horn on a vehicle that i drive daily. the mechanic determined that the clock spring needs to be replaced.
While driving my 2013 vw passat, the airbag light came on, on the dashboard and started beeping. when i pulled into my garage, i noticed that the horn no longer worked and none of the steering wheel functions work anymore. i have only 56,718 miles on the car and the vw dealer says it is not covered under a recall and i would have to pay out of pocket for the repair because my warranty deductible is $500. this is a safety issue and vw should be required to repair these airbag issues, not us, the consumer. this is not something we (the consumers) are causing, this is a vw quality issue.
