Wife went outside to start her tdi and after sitting and making no progress in warming and smelling a lot of un-burnt diesel she decided to shut it off. after she came inside and told me it was not warming up and it seemed to be running out of fuel very quickly i went outside to check it out. i could see that diesel had leaked onto the ground, so i opened the hood and fuel was dripping from the engine mounted fuel pump. i left it overnight at this point to make sure no fires where started. the next morning i took it apart to find out what the source of the leak and after removing the pump, associated electrical, and rubber lines i saw the end of the pump had popped out of its crimped aluminum case. this was allowing diesel to leak past the running electric pump and onto the running engine which at the point of turning it off had covered the entire serpentine side of the engine completely in fuel. it was a bosch part #1k0 906 098a ...
The vehicle has a long history of the throttle becoming inoperative resulting in no-power (idle power strictly speaking) conditions. that condition is cleared when the clutch pedal is depressed and released. recently there was an instance of uncommanded acceleration: instead of no power, full power was applied by the engine. again cycling the clutch cleared the condition. the no-power cases appeared more likely in urban driving and soon after a transmission shift but did occur under almost any conditions. the full-power case occurred once, climbing a hill at ~2800' altitude. the power fail occurred as early as 34k miles, and continued with vw's knowledge until ~72k miles, when vw of america technicians finally did something to end it. those symptoms started recurring at ~270k miles. the acceleration incident occurred at about 275k miles. the vehicle has been taken out of service; it will be sent to a salvage yard if the ntsb is not interested in the vehicle. *tr

The high pressure fuel pump broke leaving metal shaving in my fuel tank. i had this replaced at 38k miles and now it is broke again at 78k. vw extended the warranty for 2006-2012 vehicles for 10 yrs or 120k miles. but since my vehicle is a 2013 they will not covered it. i believe they are still using the same faulty fuel pump for the 2013. *tr

On wednesday september 23rd at or around 3:40 pm, i pulled into an arco fuel station to top off my vehicle. i still had a 1/4 of a tank left but decided to fuel up anyway. the vehicle took approximately 11 us gal of no. 2 diesel fuel. after fueling my vehicle, i drove off the fuel station. approximately 3/4 of a mile away from the fuel station, my engine stalled out and then the glow plug icon on my instrument cluster began to flash. i had my vehicle towed to the nearest vw dealership service department. the following day the service technician contacted me and informed me that my high pressure fuel pump(hpfp) had failed and that it had contaminated my entire fuel system with metal shavings. the way the technician explained what had happened to the fuel pump was, "your fuel pump grenaded", his exact words.
The car is a 2011 vw jetta sw tdi. on sept 7, 2015, while driving on the autobahn, the car's check engine light activated and the car abruptly lost power. i coasted to a stop on the shoulder. i shut the car off and it would not restart. it was towed to the nearest vw dealer. we had to rent a vehicle for almost two weeks. vw said the fuel pump was destroyed due to tainted diesel fuel. reports indicated that metal shavings were found in fuel samples. vw replaced the entire fuel system at a cost of eight thousand euros. i have contacted the esso station & headquarters. esso has indicated that there have been no reports of tainted diesel fuel at the station. i am being shuffled between the esso station & the vw dealership. it is obvious who the responsible party is. vw needs to do what is right and demonstrate corporate social responsibility. *tr
