Problems with 2011 Volkswagen Jetta ENGINE

On average, the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 57 264 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Driving my car i would come to a stop and my car would shut off. my battery light would then appear. had battery and alternator checked 4x was told that they are in perfect condition. battery comes on but radio still on. i was told that it had to be a wiring problem. so i took it to my volkswagen dealership and they keep telling me they can't diagnose a problem. i don't feel comfortable and safe driving the car on city streets and sometimes on the interstate. i just need my car fixed it has caused me so much stressed i am now on high blood pressure medication.

While in car was driving for approximately 10 min at least and noticed car was smoking. pulled into my driveway and popped the hood to check why it was smoking and noticed vehicle was under fire. car was parked prior for about 2 hours.

Always had electrical issues, always changing fuse for horn, horn "never" works! issues with ignition, difficult to turn off, not cannot turn on at all, key won't turn enough, contact volkswagen, advised out of warranty, no recall for issues i am having, vw does not stand behind their product-very expensive to fix, vw will do nothing, told me not a common issue (all they have to do is read through the complaints on here and find lots of people w/same issue(s) would not recommend vw to anyone!

My volkswagen jetta 2011 seems to have misfire. it has a check engine light on. the car shakes when slow down and/or at stops. vw certified mechanic tried changing the plugs, and cleaning the valves but nothing helped. he also tied shaft crank sensor that did not help either. finally the diagnosis report indicated that it's timing chain issue that need to be replaced.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 volkswagen jetta. on multiple occasions, the vehicle would not immediately start. while driving, the vehicle would suddenly shut off without warning. on one occasion, after driving into a busy intersection, the vehicle suddenly shut off. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the crank sensor was faulty. the crank sensor was replaced, but the failures continued. the local dealer (white allen volkswagen, 648 springboro pike, dayton, oh) and the manufacturer were notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 65,000. the vin was invalid.

Key gets stuck in ignition when turning off the engine.

Crank case is not on recall so it's not covered under warranty. the cost is 4200.00. at what point will it go on recall. without the repair the car is dead in the water. warranty company will not pay for anything that's on a technical service bulletin. also called vw verified is on the technical service bulletin. it's very dangerous as the car oil light comes on and runs rough and just stops. july 7 2017 bulletin 15-16-02 (v151602)

Vehicle stalls intermittently since purchase, commonly when exiting a freeway to a stop or during rush hour(stop/go)traffic. before stalling, vehicle will jerk, rough idle, and delay acceleration. stalling may occur at a stop after high speed, however stalling has also occurred during driving after a high speed to low speed departure. when vehicle stalls during driving, both the wheel and brakes lock up commonly. it takes putting it in neutral while rolling and attempting to start several times before ignition kicks in. this has been dangerous as the only braking would be a gradual emergency brake pull and there is no additional steering, thankfully i have had straightaways the times it has happened, however i have been forced to go through red lights with my hazards on, laying on the horn. vw has attempted repair 5 times for same issue with no resolve. lights and codes come and go intermittently after stalling. one or both of the previous issues mentioned occurs on a daily basis as of the moment. the ftc, bbb, and attorney general for the state of michigan have all been made aware of the situation and the attorney general's office recommended i report it to you.

Nhtsa campaign #11v196000 my fuses blow, my driver window rolls down, but intermittently won't roll up. my engine cuts out for no reason, while in motion and stopped. happens when slowing down, exiting off the freeway and coming to a stop in town. my epc, check engine , and light sensors come on and off and different times. 3 years ago i had my abs module replaced. but continue to have the same issues. looking online i found the recall above, but when i took it to the dealer i was told this isn't an open recall. this has been going on since 2014

I cannot turn the key off and remove it or lock my car the engine keeps running

When driving the low oil pressure light comes on and goes off 4 or 5 times then is perfectly fine the rest of the trip. it happens in cold and hot weather. when the low oil pressure light comes on, it's always when i let off the accelerator to come to a stop. once i start moving again, the light goes off. the correct oil/filter have been installed, vw dealership said it happens all the time and the oil pressure sensor was bad. i changed the sensor and it still does the same thing. while researching it on google, it appears a lot of people have this same issue, but no one has a solution.vw dealership has lied to me before so i don't trust them working on my car.

Engine/car at low speeds begins shaking and revs lights flicker car will even shut off in the middle of drive huge safety concern! dealer and mechanics have not been able to figure the problem out. replaced crankshaft and timing valves along with oil and fluids new and reset car computer. still not fixed! researched on google and tons of other volkswagen owners are experiencing same issues.

After driving for a while, the car acts as if its going to run out of gas. the car will start to jerk and idle very roughly in which a few times it has cut off on me, once trying to exit the highway. had it checked out by certified vw dealer where the car was bought, and i was told it was a faulty n205 valve. had the valve replaced and 2 days later the car is doing the exact same thing. took it back and dealer once again said they fixed the problem by adjusting sensors, but still the same thing is happening.

Car shuddered and lost power to accelerate. epc light and check engine flash - same as last time.

2011 vw jetta tdi failed while driving on highway. as car slowed due to traffic, the coil (glow plug?) light came on. when car came to complete stop due to traffic, engine light came on and the car stopped and would not restart. there was no time for me to move to the side of the highway due to traffic congestion so i was stranded in the middle of the freeway. waiting for ca highway patrol for help, traffic cleared and i was subsequently hit by a car moving at freeway speeds and sustained injuries (ribs, back and neck injuries, and concussion) online, there are numerous reports of other vw cars that experienced the exact same issue (coil/glow plug light, then engine failure). this happened to me on a freeway and the rear-end collision i was subjected to due to car failure could have been fatal. since this is happening to other vw cars, i believe this needs to be investigated to prevent fatalities. thank you! *tr

I left work to pick up my children 3 times in a short trip the car cut off, it seems as if you don't give gas the car will stall and quit. i have started trying to hold the brake and give gas to prevent from it cutting off at stop lights, the car will also cut off in motion if not given gas. i can't file a complaint everyday but not one day goes by that my car don't cut off

My vehicle will cut off at random times while driving and steering locks up, also my alarm will make the sound to disarm the vehicle when driving i have to pull over shut down car and disarm it and start again. while at a stop light the vehicles rpm will raise and go down raise and go down until car just shuts off. i was pulling into my parking stall and car shut off and locked up i had to hit the brake and re start the car to pull in safely or it would have ran into the carport. on this date the car shut itself off in motion 2 times and it cut off with brake on at a light 3 times

High pressure fuel pump breakdown littered the diesel injection system with metal particles. at least the following were damaged, according to volkswagen fuel pump has metal in it intake fuel pump high pressure pump auxillary fuel pump fuel lines 4 injectors fuel rail w/sensors this is a $6,500 fix and there is an astronomical failure rate that is greater than 1%. i believe that this problem should be revisited.

Ignition switch key lock solenoid (n376) problem. hello, my wife's 2011 jetta has a malfunctioning ignition lock cylinder. perhaps the ignition switch key lock solenoid (n376)? normally the key should be locked in the ignition while the car is in d(drive). however, there appears to be a malfunction in the n376 (or other) which does not engage the locking solenoid. this allows for the key to be pulled out while in d. she was able to turn the car off and pull the keys out of the car while the car was still in d(drive), got out of the car and the car rolled back and hit a porsche. thankfully the car did not run over a child or other person. from brief research i see there have been multiple recalls on similar items, here is an article on one though not specifically on the 2011 jetta.

While driving straight on a city highway, the car stalled, and would not restart. this happened in moderate traffic, but we were able to coast out of the road and into a parking lot. the dealer where we bought the car analyzed the fuel system, and ruled that out. he found a bad fuse related to the fuel pump, and claims at this time that it is probably an electrical issue. at this time, the exact cause remains unknown. this is the third time that we've had the same problem, though the previous two times the dealers claimed that it was a fuel system issue.

Car shakes when driving to the point we have to pull over turn the car off and restart it. the check engine light comes on and goes off as it pleases as does the epc light. car won't accelerate while shaking.

Manual transmission tdi sportwagen. driving 30 mph in 4th gear. flashing glow plug warning light went on. vehicle lost power and speed. attempted to downshift. engine immediately shut off and rpm went immediately to 0. lost power steering and brakes. did not have enough speed to bring vehicle to curb. vehicle stopped at intersection and had to be towed. dealer diagnosed as hpfp failure.

I was driving to work, which includes crossing a toll bridge daily. i was on the bridge, which is only a 2 lane bridge, when all of a sudden my diesel engine failure light began to flash. i lost acceleration and was able to pull off to the shoulder safely and turn off the car. i sat there for a few minutes contemplating if i should call aaa to get a tow to the dealer. seeing as i was only about 5 miles from the vw dealer, i decided to see if my car will make it there. it started back up no problem and i was able to accelerate back into traffic and make it to the dealer with no further issues. i explained the problem to the service rep. and they checked in my car and i waited for them to call me with the issue. later in the day, i received the call from the service rep., and he informed me that the high pressure fuel pump failed, and they will have to rebuild the fuel system, as there were metal particles found in the gas and gas lines. he said this sometimes happens when a customer may use biodiesel fuel or a lower grade of diesel. he also said that they would have to send the gas samples off to vw lab to review in order for the repairs to be approved since i have the extended warranty. i am shocked that this occured, seeing as my car is only 4 years old and less than 50k miles on it. thankfully, there was not an accident and no one was hurt.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated that when the ignition was turned to the on position, the check engine warning indicator illuminated continuously. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the dpf filter failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 108,000. the vin was unavailable.

The car loses power, stalls then it dies. at times it speeds up, and stalls dies without warning. loses all power, found recall in reference to this issue. vin# matches series, matches date, and place where the car was made, except for the last few digits. recall 11v19600, and vw will not replace harness to electrcial fuse and circuit breaker. i need to help to get this resolved. i have been battling the dealer and vw of america since 03/20/2015 until today 06/26/2015

Traveling along at highway speed. car sputtered and died. i was able to pull over and be towed to a repair shop. apparently there is a well-known design flaw in the intercooler intake pipe on all volkswagen tdi (diesel) engines since 2009 that causes moisture to develop in the intercooler intake pipe during cold weather. if enough moisture collects in this pipe, it will get channeled to the engine and be fed into the cylinders, causing the car to sputter and stall exactly as mine did - or to simply not start on cold days. other side effects of this, are severe engine damage. vw is well aware of this issue, and has issued a tsb about it. "tsb# 21 11 06 / 2025464 frozen air charge cooler" and there is a repair part they have already designed - # cold weather ic kit 1k0-198-803-b... however, the part is only made available upon request and at owner expense if out of warranty. this is not a warranty issue; this is huge safety hazard and a design flaw that vw needs to correct for all owners. this situation also, apparently does not throw any codes to the vehicle computer, as there are no sensors of any type in this intercooler pipe. the only way to determine that this is the cause, it to put the vehicle up, and remove one end of this hose and see if water or 'sludge' drains out of it, and this pipe would probably be destroyed in any front-end collision, as it's far forward in the engine compartment. there is a ton of information about this all over the internet. here is a link to just one of the articles i found after this happened to me. http://forums.thecarlounge.com/showthread.php?5574701-tdi-intercooler-issue-design-flaw. *tr

Car shuddered and lost power to speed up while driving on the freeway. i had to exit as fast as possible. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 volkswagen jetta. while driving at 65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact merged to the right side of the road and restarted the vehicle. the failure recurred three times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the number two and three fuel injectors were faulty and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 105,000.

I have a 2011 vw jetta tdi (diesel). after leaving my car parked for about a week, it would not start. the battery was fine, so i had it towed to the dealer, and was told that condensate had build up in my intercooler and air intake lines and frozen. the suggested repair was to replace the intercooler, and associated parts, but i had them thaw and drain the lines and took my car home. i am concerned because if the condensate built up in the lines and got into my engine i can potentially throw a rod causing severe engine damage. i asked the dealer about this and they said while unlikely, it could potentially happen. i'd like to know the prevalence of this in the 2011 jetta tdi so i can make an informed decision about the future of my car. *tr

Brought to dealer for a dpf light. dealer diagnosed with a clogged particulate filter replaced under warranty. picked up car drove about 5 miles and the glow plug light came on turned around and headed back to dealer car went into limp mode (on i93 rush hour traffic) shut car off in vw parking lot and tech could not get it to start again. received a call next day with the hpfp failure news and the fragment went through the entire system. dealer tested fuel and confirmed no gas in the 3/4 of a tank that is in the car currently. *tr

I had driven the car earlier that day (about 40 miles) with no problems. i got home at about 7:30pm and parked the car outside our house. at about 2am, i heard a beeping car horn. i looked outside and saw flames coming out of the front drivers side of our beautiful 2011 jetta sportwagen. i dialed 911, the car continued to burn until the fire dept arrived and put it out. the car is a total loss. i'm only happy it wasn't parked inside a garage where the fire would have destroyed our house as well. no work had been done on the car recently and no aftermarket options were installed. i have only one question - what could cause a completely cold car (not driven in over 6 hours) to suddenly burst into flame?? thank you.

I was driving 40 mph and the car lost power and the glow plug light turn on and off then the car turned off and it didn't turn back on. *tr

Driving down the highway at about 55mph, started switching lanes and stepped on the gas to accelerate. the car sputtered and the engine vibrated. the car felt like i was going to stall driving in the high-speed lane. the yellow check engine light came on and epc light started flashing. swerving back into the lower speed lane i couldn't even keep the car at 55mph. i had to pull over on the highway to see if i could make sense of it. after turning off the car and then back on, the lights went off and the car was fine. i took it too the mechanic and they said they couldn't find anything wrong after $85.00 diagnostic. the car ran fine for 2 days until the same exact thing happened while driving on the highway again. this occurred on and off intermittently about every 1-2 days for about 2 weeks. three trips to the mechanic within those 2 weeks and with each visit there was a computer connected to the car and a full systems diagnostic reported that there was nothing wrong with the car. it became dangerous for me to drive the car and even more so to drive it on the highway. after the second week the lights finally came on and stayed on and the problem was diagnosed as the engine misfiring in 2 of the cylinders. the mechanic changed with the ignition coil on 12/15.2014. the engine ran completely fine without any issues until last week, 3/19/2015. at 3 months and only 28,000 miles on the car the same problem started to reoccur while getting onto the highway and attempting to accelerate from 40-45mph. it started just as it did before intermittently and about 2 weeks later the engine and epc lights were on permanently again. after the mechanic confirmed that it was the same issue with the same component we changed the same part again. i am expecting to be changing it again in 3 more months, if i still have the car. *tr

While driving in a residential area, the jetta tdi engine light began flashing and the engine started lugging. according to the dealer, this is due to a known defect with the intercooler hose that traps condensation in the system. when the condensation freezes, the engine is deprived of air. according to the forum post below, this issue is very widespread and can sometimes cause engine damage from hydrolock. if the car is moving at high speeds when this happens, it can be dangerous. vw is charging customers who are out of warranty over $1,000 to fix a known design flaw. a recall should be issued to protect customers from this problem. forum describing the widespread nature of this issue; http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5574701-tdi-intercooler-issue-design-flaw. *tr

Driving vehicle on south bound i-5 going 60mph right outside of the tacoma dome in far left lane when vehicle suddenly started flashing engine light and engine died at the same time. i had multiple vehicles screeching to a stop right on i-5 and honking at me, almost hitting me, barely missing me. i almost died. no shoulder to get off on. engine light then went off. i sat in my car for several minutes crying, shaking and then tried starting car again. car barely started, able to get off to the side of the road, but car was shaking and jumping to the side of the road. larson's volkswagen dealership is charging me $480 and says this happened due to "failure in ignition coil pack a" i almost died, why is there not a recall on this? *tr

While driving the engine light came on and the car lost power. we were on a rural road so we could pull to the side of the road safely, if this had happened on a freeway we could have been in danger of being rear ended. once stopped the care would not restart. had to be towed to vw dealer. the high pressure fuel pump had failed. *tr

I was operating the car on a highway when the vehicle experienced a sudden reduction in power and the dash displayed a flashing glow plug light and solid check engine warning lights. i immediately pulled to the side of the road where the engine was shut off. the engine failed to restart and was towed to a volkswagen dealership. the service manager told me that the cause was a catastrophic failure of the (hpfp); it totally came apart and distributed metal throughout the fuel system. injector pump (diesel), injectors, injector lines, primary fuel lines, and primary fuel pump. the car only has 54,000 miles on it. *tr

My car started shaking violently as i was driving. my check engine light came on along with my epc light. the car felt like it was going to breakdown on the interstate. i pulled over and turned the car off then turned it back on and it was fine. i drove a little ways down the road and the same thing happened, so i took it to a dealership and they stated l had a bad ignition coil with the codes 351,300,301,304,130. they replaced the part and almost exactly a year later 7/6/2015 i'm having the exact same problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 volkswagen jetta. while driving at 50 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power and was unable to be driven. the glow plug light illuminated prior to the failure. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer several times and was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the vin was unavailable. the approximate failure mileage was 35,000.

While attempting to accelerate car sputtered, and hesitated while losing power. regained power briefly then sputtered, lost power and engine cut off completely. started engine after letting sit for a few minutes drove home ok. happened again a week later and took it to dealership. dealer diagnosed it as faulty ignition coil and arcing. *tr

Went to pass a vehicle and i felt a surge then a siren sound started coming from the right side of engine. was told by dealership it was a vacuum issue and it was safe to drive. when i got to dealership they told me it was a blown turbo. wondering if this is tied to the incident i had with the high pressure fuel pump failing around 100k. too many major catastrophic issues with this car. i've been quoted 15,000 for repairs on a car i'm still making payments on and only cost 28k to begin with. *tr

My car has had 3 stalls within 3 months. i took it to the dealer they replaced the throttle assembly. since then i was pulling out of a parking spot and put the car in drive and the car stalled. i took it to the dealer and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle. *tr

Purchased this car new in 2011. vw fixed the fuel exhaust ports. engine light came on again and dealer stated that the particulate filter and catalytic converter both needed to be replaced. also warned that the fuel pump had serious issues. i had one year left to pay this car off, it had 90k miles on it and i had to turn it in. how can they get away with selling a brand new car for $28k to have it crap out with no repercussions like this? *tr

I purchased the jetta used from carmax in nashville, tn in 2014. it began having safety issues on march 2014. randomly, my car will just stop while driving down the road, or after accelerating from a stopped position when moving on from a stop sign or stop light. i can be driving anywhere from 15 mph to 50 mph, and all systems shut down. the battery light goes on, the steering locks, and the brakes lock. i always panic, put the car in neutral and have luckily managed to veer off to the side of a road and stop, shut the car off, and turn it back on again. eurofix tried to manage the problem by replacing the crank sensor and cam shaft. but he problem came back, much worse. the second problem is now i cannot unlock my drivers side door with my magnetic key or by sticking the actual key in the lock. i see that another recall has been announced for the 2011 jetta that is not pulling up via my vin number, but i believe it might be my car's issue: online, ate that in march 29, 2011 (published by nhtsa) in which an issue with "an electrical wiring and fuse layout where the converter box is protected by the same fuse used by the signal horn and the anti-they alarm system. should that fuse be blown,, the converter will be disconnected from the power supply which in turn will shut off applications such as the engine management system, lighting system, and wipers"......"should this happen while the vehicle is being driven, the engine could stall or the headlights or wipers could turn off unexpectedly, potentially leading to a crash without warning." please help me!!!!!!! what do i do. what will remedy this situation so i don't get killed or kill others. i't gonna happen....then my family will file a lawsuit. i need guidance and for this car to be fixed/traded out.

The effected car was a diesel model 2011 volkswagen jetta tdi sedan with 48,074 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. while traveling at approximately 40 mph in normal driving conditions, the vehicle experienced a sudden reduction in power and displayed a flashing glow plug light and solid check engine warning lights. the vehicle was immediately pulled to the side of the road where the engine was shut off. the engine failed to restart and was towed to a volkswagen dealership service department. the volkswagen dealer determined that a catastrophic failure of the vehicle's high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) had occurred. the dealer found that extensive damage to the entire fuel system had resulted from the failure, causing internal metal debris contamination that required substantial repairs. the total cost of repairs were reported by the dealership to equal $6,500.00. *tr

Drive home from work at about 1500 hrs, with no issues. stopped at local supermarket, started engine with slight delay, left parking lot, car started to buck, drove maybe 1/2 mi started losing power, after going another 50 ft car engine died, pushed car to my driveway called dealership and had car towed to dealership. on 11/21/13 dealership informed me that hpfp had exploded sending metal shavings into engine, they asked me if i accidentally put gas and i responded with no. they stated that fuel may have been contaminated. dealership is repairing car since it is still under warranty, said maybe 1 week in the shop. i was given a rental in the meantime. *tr

During mid motion, with foot on the gas, the vehicle died in the middle of the intersection. no warning indications appeared on the dash. the speed of travel was approximately 35mph. the car was towed by aaa. service at vw has yielded inconclusive results. there are numerous forums on edmunds detailing and accounting this seemingly ubiquitous and potentially fatal flaw. as it stands, vw is persistent in there stance to do nothing about it. they refuse to issue a refund or exchange on certified cars. this particular model in which i write about, was on its first day off of the lot, as a certified pre-owned vehicle. vw refuses any such possibility of return, even on account of possible safety concerns, and despite the accumulative reports others have made documenting this exact flaw, without any known way of remedying on vw's part. *tr

My 2011 volkswagen jetta tdi started to sputter when accelerating, i brought it the dealer and they found shards of metal in the fuel system. hpfp (high pressure fuel pump) had failed. the quote to fix was 6875.00 to fix a two year old car. very un happy. *tr

High pitched whine, sudden stall at hwy speed. the fuel light and service engine now light came on. the vehicle would not run and required a tow to the dealership. i was notified it would be a $5000+ repair and the hpfp failed requiring the entire fuel system to be replaced. *tr

I was on my way home after work approximately 6-7 pm doing 45 mph. i looked down to my instrument cluster to check my speed to make sure i wasn't speeding. then i saw the glow plug light blinking multiple times then about less than 5-10 seconds later my engine cut out. i cost off into a harper college parking lot came to a stop. i tried to start the car 2-3 times, each time the engine was crackin over but wouldn't start it up. i called the tow truck company and had the vehicle towed to vw dealer in schaumburg, il ( fox valley vw) dealer said the high pressure fuel pump failed. vwoa cover this under power train warranty 5/60k warranty. the dealer replace hpfp, lift pump, pump in gas tank, fuel lines to engine, coils etc... repairs came to roughly $5300.00. vwoa only give 12/12k miles warranty on the hpfp. this is a known problem on some vw with cjaa 2.0l turbo diesel engines and vwoa has not found the defect in the hpfp.vwoa should extend the hpfp to 100k miles due to deft in the hpfp since they haven't found the problem and corrected it. *tr
