We have classified the 3 complaints from 2009 Volkswagen Jetta about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
The trunk lid of my 2009 vw jetta opens unexpectedly. it has happened while driving and while it is parked. this problem is intermittent and it is difficult to predict when it will occur. i will sometimes find it open when i am ready to drive in the morning. sometimes it will open immediately after starting the car. once it opened while i was entering a freeway ramp. luckily it has not yet happened while unattended during a rain or snowstorm ! yet the potential for danger is very real. finding a place to pull over to close a trunk lid while my rear vision is blocked can be a very dangerous scenario -- not to mention the security issues an open trunk lid raises. the vw dealer has attempted two fixes, once under warranty and another attempt on march 6, 2015 cost me several hundred dollars. the last incident occurred just this afternoon as i was returning to my car from the bank lobby. i'm scheduled for a third visit to the dealer tomorrow afternoon. i really don't want to be a throwing any more money at a safety and quality issue that should not occur and hope that you will be able to help me. thank you very much. *tr
Rear door lock failure - unlock car using key fob, try to open back driver's side door, pull handle, door "drops" but doesn't open fully, pull handle second time door opens. from the inside try to open the door pull on handle door fails to open remaining locked even when driver unlocks manually. this does not happen every time i try to open the door but frequently. i've replaced door locks twice on rear passenger doors and the left door has failed again. each time at my expense! this should be a recall as it's clearly a safety issue. *tr
When it rains the drains in the volkswagen jetta get clogged up. once the drains get clogged the water comes inside the interior of the car into the entire floor of the car. the floor is then flooded with water. their has been a previous lawsuit that was settled for the previous vw models 97-05 in 2014. when the car was sold to me no one notified me of this problem and how to prevent this problem. now my local vw dealership wants to charge me 1000 for this problem which should not be a problem from the first place. *tr
Passenger side, rear door lock does not work. door cannot be opened from either the inside or the outside. *tr
I have owned vehicle for 2.5 years, went to check the status of the spare tire and found that the spare tire well was filled with water. searching here and there i see that this is a known problem with this vehicle, something to do with the sunroof drain tubes. i bought this car from a vw dealer and have had it services at a vw dealer and no one has mentioned anything about this. with all the electronics on the car this could have caused a major outage. *tr
Ice collected in door jam, reducing operation of driver door. i had been driving in cold weather. upon arrival at my destination, my drivers door was difficult to open. when forced open i heard a loud crunching noise. once i got out of the car, the bottom of my door was damaged and a large chunk of ice was found in the forward part of the door jam. a significant amount of ice had accumulated. with the current weather pattern, this has been happening daily since the first incident. now the door is damaged enough it will no longer open properly. *tr
Our car is driven by 2 drivers- i am 5 feet tall, my husband is 6'1". the car seat gets moved back and forth a lot as we both drive the car daily. in late november my husband moved the seat all the way back and it made a cracking noise. we later noticed the air bag light was on. he found the broken wire under the seat and repaired it, but the light was still on. a call to the dealership revealed they knew about the issue and the fix was to "not move the seat so much". the next week- before we had a chance to take the car in to get the light cleared- the car was involved in a collision. i rear ended a car in slow-and-go traffic when she switched lanes in front of me while i was accelerating. $15,000 in damage was done to the car but the air bags did not go off. a witness that stopped to help had to pry the door open to get me out. the fighter fighters all remarked that they could not believe the air bags didn't go off. no airbags could have been a huge issue if the accident was worse. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated that the steering wheel cover slip in the air bag horn area was defective and the contact was concerned that the air bag would erroneously deploy. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 71,000. updated 08/27/13*lj the steering air bag cover also served as the horn contact area i.e. the consumer had to press the air bag cover to activate the horn. the steering wheel air bag cover was splitting in multiple areas due to horn usage i.e pressing on the cover to activate the horn. the steering wheel air bag cover should withstand a lifetime of use without failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue, but they refused to replace the steering wheel airbag which included the cover. updated 08/29/13 updated 09/24/13
The door locks on my 2009 jetta will not lock/unlock. this can cause an issue where the door remains locked randomly, prohibiting an occupant from exiting the car in case of an emergency. this also allows the door to remain unlocked when assuming it has been locked, leading the car to be more accessible to unwanted patrons! *tr
Back doors randomly lock and won't unlock as well as remain unlocked and won't lock. this creates concern with personal safety when they won't lock (ejection in car wreck, strangers entering car) and when they won't unlock (ability to get out of car in emergency). this began at about 30,000 miles (two years old) and then appeared to resolve only to begin again at 50,000 miles (3 years old). dealership tells me it will cost $800 to fix and when it happens with the front doors it will cost $1500 to fix them. this is a safety issue and should be a recall. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 volkswagen jetta sportswagen. the contact stated that the passenger side door locks were broken. the contact stated that the locks had fractured before and were repaired under warranty. the dealer advised the contact that the parts needed for repairs would not be available for approximately one month. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted who offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 28,000. updated 01/18/11 *bf the consumer stated the front passenger doors are not exhibiting the same problem. updated 04/19/11
Hoses for the sunroof drains not sealed properly. water leaks into passenger compartment. fills spare tire well, rusting the jack and tools making it hard to use if needed. water also runs down a pillar (where there is an airbag) and then over (soaking) the fuse box on the side of the dashboard. then it runs down the plastic trims and leaks onto the feet of the driver soaking the floor mat. the wet fuse box and airbag seems dangerous. date first noted and mileage are guesses. i know of many other jetta sportwagens that have this issue. *tr
Sunroof drainage tubes became unglued from the draining nipples that attach to the panoramic sunroof assembly causing a large water leaks every time it rained. the a, b, c, and d interior pillars and headliner became soaked as did the interior carpets and other components including the fuse panel box and central electronics control module (cecm) behind the driver's side dash causing intermittent electrical shorts and drivability issues. this is a real safety hazard that has afflicted many vw sedans with the standard glass sunroof and wagons equipped with the optional panoramic glass sunroof. evidence of other failures of these components has been documented on many vw advocate forums but no vw tsb or recall campaigns have been issued to date to address this defect. the repair is very costly (4-5 hours of labor plus parts). a class-action lawsuit is currently underway for this same defect for many volkswagen cars up to 2009 but the same defect persist in 2009 and newer jetta sedans and sportwagens with sunroofs. i urge the ntsa to investigate this safety hazard on affected vw vehicles from 2009-2012. *tr
Shortly after purchase, car began to fill with water. not directly from the sun roof but from a disconnected or damaged drain hose. causing serious mold & electrical problems. vw has reluctantly looked into the problem, replaced parts, but only made it worse. and the car is now undrivable. *tr
Most vw jetta 2009 owners are complaining about the excessive wind noise around the a-pillars on the sedans. it is so loud the it gives you a headache and increases drivers fatigue. many magazines have written about the issue and have been told by vw that they have a fix. to date they do not. *tr
Purchased a new '09 vw jetta sdn 2.5 l s and the second day i had it, i had to take to service dept. the door seal from drivers door was coming off, the car would smell like burning plastic and i noticed after 3rd trip ( in 2 days ) the rear brakes were "glowing" red hot. they said they could figure it out and said it may be a plastic coating they put on brake pads to keep rust from building up on the ship overseas! after the brakes constantly squeaking and having to take my new car in 2 more time with every excuse known to man , i was mistakenly told it was a defect and they changed them at no charge. my brakes are again going out and it has only been about 6-9 months. the concern is that they have not fixed the root of the problem as well as a seat belt indicator which has been faulty. i have had them make me take it in 3 times for that ( first time they couldn't duplicate the problem, so i was told to bring it in again ) and one passenger side was replaced but it is still happening and i fear that the combined brake and seat belt/ airbag issues could be dangerous! also troubling is in the last few months the drivers side rear door would not unlock by any means for on 3 occasions (the last which i called vw service to make an appointment for and never got a return phone call) the last time it was unusable door for 2 weeks then just started working again. it has not been attended to, but my fear is again, in a accident if someone was back there they may get trapped in car. *tr
