We have classified the 15 complaints from 2005 Toyota Tacoma about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
Two years after the purchase of this truck new in december of 2004, i started to notice rust on the frame. now having kept the truck garaged at all times and with slightly over 31,000 miles on it the frame is getting very rusty. *tr
The front mud flaps are defective, they break off for no reason. once they are missing rocks and debris fly into vehicle and bypassers vehicles. the flaps appear to be either to close to the tire or the material they are made with is to flexible. *tr
Mud guards are breaking off for no reason, has to be poor design or defect. *tr
Toyota tacoma 2005 windshield had problems with buzzing noise, toyota replace it a couple times due to improper installation of windshield sublet. buzzing noise is minimal and rarely happens but now sealant was not secure and during rain cause water damage to underside of carpet. my concern is mold from the water damage. *tr
At highway speeds i get a whistling/whine in the firewall area. sometimes it seems to be the right side and others the left, depending on the wind direction. i have searched and had a dealer search for the cause to no avail. surely my vehicle is not the only 05 tacoma experiencing this problem. any assistance will be greatly appreciated. *tr
I was loading a motorcycle into the back of my 2005 toyota tacoma and the tailgate collapsed. i have owned this truck for a year and a half and this is the first time i've ever put any weight on the tailgate of the truck. after doing some research on the internet, it sounds like thousands of people are experiencing the same thing. there is no mention from toyota in the owners manual or any associated documents that the tailgate is incapable of handling a load. the weight rating for the cargo box is listed at 1000 pounds but there is nothing on the tailgate. i have owned a ford ranger and a chevy s-10 in the past and never had any problem loading a bike in the bed. i have pictures of the collapsed tailgate available. fortunately, no one was seriously injured in this but it could have been potentially fatal in the bike had fallen on one of the men loading the bike. toyota won't address this problem and is blaming this on the consumers. *jb
Motor mount failure / frame faliure. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that the spare tire could not be removed from the vehicle due to rust under the vehicle. additionally, there was rust on the steering column that required frequent lubrication. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the spare tire was rusted to the frame of the vehicle and there was no remedy available at the time. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
The events leading up to the incident was driving my vehicle on vacation. the motor mount on the vehicle broke, and the engine was leaning to the driver side. toyota refused coverage for a number of reasons, including saying it wasn't covered under warranty, my aftermarket shocks caused the motor mount to break, my heavy front bumper caused the problem, and they said i drove the truck to hard. under the magnusson-moss act, i asked them to prove that my aftermarket products caused the failure. they explained that they couldn't do that and offered me arbitration. because of the cost of renting a car while waiting for arbitration, i decided to fix the truck out of my own pocket and take toyota to small claims court. i won my case, and toyota was ordered to pay me $2,900.00. since my court case, i have joined an internet forum in which there has been at least 5 other 2005 tacomas with the same exact issue; most recently last week. toyota needs to recognize this is a problem before someone dies behind the wheel as a result of engine mount failure. *tr
We purchased 2 new toyota tacoma pick-ups for our motorcycle dealership. we have been in business for 8 years, and owned ford, chevy, and nissan as our delivery trucks. the tailgates on these trucks have never bent until we bought these 2 toyotas. both new trucks have bent tail gates, due to poor construction. there are no warning signs on the tailgate nor in the owners manual, but southeast toyota refuses to warranty these items. *nm
New 2005 tacoma toyota truck with less than 10k. the tailgate is all bent. very poorly constructed....toyota should be ashamed! *nm
Less than one year after purchase the rear leaf springs failed on both sides. two dealers plus toyota headquarters refused service, so i had to pay for a private spring shop to replace them. they have since been recalled but to date i have not received reimbursement. in 2014 the steering shaft had to be replaced and at the same time the frame was determined corroded beyond repair. toyota made promise to replace the frame under recall in nov 2014 but to date has not delivered and has not indicated when i can expect the repair to be made. for over six months now i have been left with an unsafe vehicle that i can't sell or replace.
2005 toyota tacoma tailgate is dangerously weak, and is unable to support what most consider normal weight for a truck tailgate. although substandard design may be considered "buyer beware", truck buyers expect a tailgate to support the weight of normal truck use activities. toyota provides no warning or caution anywhere that the tailgate is of insufficient strength to perform normal 1/2-ton truck duties, and typically (per internet forum threads) tells their customers that it is their problem and that they should not expect to be able to safely use the tailgate for anything more than hiding the inside of the bed. since toyota has produced a substandard designed part, they should have provided a visual warning on the part to alert customers to the danger their product imposes if used in a traditional manner. since they did not do so, they should be held liable to provide a redesigned part to their customers or full restitution for the purchase price of the vehicles. a google or similar internet search on "tacoma tailgate forum" will substantiate my statements beyond my personal experience with the tailgate bending. *nm
The frame of the truck is rusting out at an accelerated rate. the welds are rusting out at high stress points (engine mounts and suspension areas). toyota has a history of this problem with the tacoma. *tr
2005 toyota tacoma instrument panel cannot be read easily by the driver.***no answer required***.*mr the instrument panel had poor lighting. *jb
Wind noise in cab of my 2005 tacoma extra cab. this is a extremely intolerable noise that destroys any possibility of having a enjoyable driving experience in this vehicle. condition was; present when delivered, told today after complaining from day one that the condition is one caused by engineering defect and toyota has no fix for it. i know this is present in all tacomas of this model, 2005-2007 as i have driven another new truck exactly like mine with the same condition. dealer is no help whatsoever. talked with another owner 10/30/06 with same problem. thank you for any help you might be. charles *nm
Abundant frame rust on 2005 toyota tacoma with 53,000 miles. vehicle driven in normal conditions; underside spray-washed regularly all winter long. the amount of frame rust is consistent with other similar tacomas i've seen, but much greater than on other make and model trucks of the same age or older, even much older. my concern is that the rate of rust development on these tacomas could eventually lead to frame failure, putting occupants and others at safety risk. *tr
Dt: consumer was unloading a motorcycle from his truck and the rear tailgate bent in almost a v. this shifted the motorcycle's weight, and almost resulted in an accident. the motorcycle could have fallen off the tailgate or fallen upon the caller .the owner's manual does not state how much weight the tailgate can support or any precautions on loading onto a tailgate. *ak
The fender support brackets broke causing the fenders to become loose and crack. *jb
My 2005 toyota tacoma pickup has severe paint chipping problems on the rocker panels, lower doors, and front of the bedsides. toyota is denying responsibility. they want to do a paint repair which will depreciate the value of my truck instead of giving me a new truck which is the only way to properly correct the problem. unless they were to strip my truck down to bare metal and repaint from scratch, there is no other way to do it properly.
2005 tacoma prerunner has a pop or thump that occurs when there is an acceleration for a dead stop and then also a thump when there is a deceleration. it can be felt in the cab as though there is a space between the cab mounting bolts and the frame i.e., not tight enough and causes the cab to lift forward and up when stopping or the opposite when accelerating. have taken it to toyota of manhattan beach, ca., they tightened the bolts and it was better but is now back as it was in before. *nm
Consumer was under the assumption that a bed and a bedliner came with their 2005 toyota tacoma.*mr while driving 25 mph with a load of 208 bricks in plastic wrap. the consumer had to make a sudden stop and when he did the bricks shifted and ran into the cab of the truck denting it. the consumer believes if there was a truck bed installed this would not have occurred. *nm
Wind noise - i experienced the same intolerable wind noise in the vehicle as others. it was most apparent at freeway speeds in a cross wind. the dealer said there was a known problem with the way the windshield was sealed and replaced it but to no avail. after several visits they called in a factory technician who quickly identified the problem as an improper fitting front passenger door and seal. driving at freeway speed he applied light outward pressure to the upper portion of the door frame and the noise would occur. examining the exterior fit of the door there was approximately a 3/16" mismatch to the rear door that also indicated an improper fit. this problem was incredibly annoying and took approximately 5 months to resolve. since, i have had an occasional whistle but not the persistent sound as before. *nm
The paint on my 2005 toyota tacoma is chipping of very rapidly and the paint is very soft and can not with stand the normal road conditions in my state.there is a problem with the paint from the factory and no resolutions are being made
I have a 2005 toyota tacoma with almost 600 miles on it. today i drove it it was a little windy out got home and looked at the truck,it was covered with rock chips!! i have read on toyotanation.com of other people having the same problem and think it is due to weak paint, and needs to be fixed. *ak
1. from day one ;2. loud popping noises from under side - cabin attachment to the chasis. its been two weeks since i took the vehicle and its getting worse. occurrs when going over even small bumps/ruts/manhole covers or other imperfections in the road especially at slow speeds. and, there is significant "swaying" in the cabin. probably due to improper securement of the cab to chasis. 3. have been to the dealer who called toyota in california who acknowledge the problem in a lot of the 05 tacomas with trd, 4x4, 4 door, short bed models, but have no idea what to do yet. is this vehicle safe for me and my family? the dealer, very nice, said he will have to wait for toyota to come up with a solution. further researching on edmunds' toyota tacoma forums, i see many many new owners with similar problems which actually has been reported since the introduction of the vehicle last oct/nov. its been mor than 4 months and toyota is selling it with the same problem.*ak
I have a silver 2005 toyota tacoma extended cab and the paint is chipping everywhere, rockers, doors, leading edge of rear doors, a couple of spots on the windshield pillars, and in front of the rear tires feel like it got sandblasted. i complained to toyota of keene. he told me toyota told him to do whatever is necessary to fix the problem, but he is only to paint the leading edge of the read doors. the body shop told him if they pained the rest it would only chip off. i have never seen any other manufactures or other models of toyota chip like this. what will it look like at 50,000 miles. somebody please help!!!*jb
2005 toyota tacoma double cab with skid plate. skid plate causes the vehicle to vibrate at high speeds, 70 mph and higher. it's worse when caught in a cross wind on the highway or on windy days. very strong and loud vibration. the problem went away when the skidplate was removed. i've read many complaints from online forums about the same problem. the strong vibration could cause loss of control and who knows what damage it could cause to the vehicle. toyota needs to recall the skid plate.*ak
When my 05' tacoma goes between 80-85 mph their is a whistling sound can be as close to chinese torture as humanly possible. it is in the "g"-flat range and very loud. *nm
While driving tailgate failed. upon pushing up on the tailgate the cables disengaged, causing the tailgate to hang. *ak
Severe blistering, flaking and chipping of paint on my new toyota tacoma. first occured on january 11, 2005, when the truck was only 5 weeks old, after an 18 mile round trip to work on paved roads. there were hundreds of flakes and chips on the truck, too many to count. after a few months of this, much of the paint on the lower sections of the truck was gone. this is happening to many tacomas, and toyota is trying to blame it on environmental damage, but i don't see any other vehicles with the same kind of damage, only tacomas. when driven as the manufacturer intends, the tacoma suffers severe paint damage, much more than any reasonable owner would expect. toyota offered me a "courtesy" paint job, but a body shop paint job and never match the original factory finish and is completely unacceptable on a brand new truck. plus, the paint job toyota offers covers only the areas affected so far, leaving behind all of the other areas on the truck which are still prone to severe chipping and flaking. in my opinion, the paint is defective.
Cabin mount bolts and bushings contract in the cold weather and become loose. there is a loud banging noise heard throughout the cab of the truck. when the weather warms up the sound goes away. dealer removed the bushings and bolts and realigned to no avail. *jb
While driving in inclement weather vehicle started leaking onto the floorboard. this caused a flood inside the vehicle. consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the a post became detached from the main frame of the vehicle. mechanic informed the consumer that a proxy glue was applied and fixed it. *ak
2005 toyota tacoma access cab with the trd package and skid plate 2w drive. e skid plate catches air and causes the vehicle to vibrate violantly at 75 mph and higher, which could possibly cause the loss of control. we removed the plate and now there is no vibration. people will think it is the tires being out of balance, but it is the plate. toyota needs to redesign this plate and check things in a wind tunnel.*ak
