Recently reported ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL problems on 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Vsc trac, vsc off,all on at once.obd ii codes point to speed sensor, brake pedal switch and abs computer malfunction. dealer recommends changing brake booster and abs computer system. from the available information on the internet this is very common problem for first generation toyota sequoias. the abs and vsc malfunction can longer stopping distance, and swerving under emergency circumstance and should be a safety concern. *tr

Vsc, seat belt and check engine light randomly started coming on about 130,000 mi. tansky toyota service did brake work, the lights were off for several weeks but then would come off and on. we ignored it because we had just had it in to the dealer, it seemed to be a nuisance in an older vehicle but not dangerous. about 165,000 miles the vehicle developed a sudden loss of power in traffic. we speculated it was the lever that shifts from 4wd to 2wd. the dealer replaced that for $400, the lights were off for 3 days, then back on. now, we have had maybe five instances of sudden loss of power. this total loss of power usually occurs after driving 10 minutes locally, and after stopping at a light. turning the ignition off, and restarting fixes the issue. tansky toyota acts like they have never heard of such a thing, but when i look online every toyota blog is full of people just like me. i know it is an old vehicle. i just want to know how much will it cost me to really fix this problem. we have started only using this vehicle for non-critical driving locally. *tr

Makes a grinding noise, brakes on one side and pulls to one side. skid indicator light, trac off light, and vsc light all come on and stay on. vehicle decelerates momentarily, then resumes normal driving. lights stay on until you turn off the vehicle. *tr

I own a 2002 toyota sequoia sr5 and have had a couple near accidents in the last few weeks due to a major malfunction with the skid control sensor and braking computer. the first instance was while driving on the interstate at 70+ mph. the symptoms are that the brakes pulsate from right to left repeatedly, while i'm not braking. the car shakes violently and is difficult to keep under control. i have been to the local vero beach, florida toyota dealer and they recalibrated the system about a month ago. the problem persists and is apparently a common problem with this vehicle. the skid control ecu is faulty and seems to be very common on consumer chat forums i've found online. the estimate i received today from toyota was in excess of $3,000 and still doesn't guarantee a proper repair. it seems that this problem should have been a cause for a recall years ago, but nothing has been done to date to my knowledge. i'm concerned for my family's safety and felt that your firm needs to be made aware of my situation and many other toyota sequoia owners from what i can tell. please let me know if you have any advise. *tr

I owned a 2002 toyota sequoia, there are times when entering a roadway or on an highway the vehicle looses power due to the vsc, abs trac warning lights and engine light, these light comes on and stays on. i think there should be a recall on this model also, this poses a vehicle safety issue especially on the highway, i find that the vehicle looses power when going through a bumpy road. i have took it to the toyota dealership and they said its the responsibility of the consumer to get this fix, i found that alot of customer on the internet having the same problem with this model. toyota should fix this problem also. *tr

Driving vehicle on interstate when it suddenly braked and pulled to the right, creating a dangerous situation just avoiding the car next to me.vsc and trac lights came on.dealer replaced numerous parts and vehicle has been ok for a few years, then lights are on again and more parts replaced...now lights on again and dealer diagnosed it as brake master cylinder,,,$825.00,,, after spending thousands already on this problem..i had a independent repair shop replace master cylinder and lights still on with 3 new codes..love the vehicle but so sick of this issue...and worry about it suddenly braking and pulling...02 needs a recall.. *tr

Driving my 2002 toyota sequoia at freeway speeds when sudden decelaration occurred. vsc, traction lights came on, along with warning buzzers. vehical also pulled hard to right. no accident or injuries. problem corrected itself. dealer stated that computer registered a roll over. they did nothing to solve issue.

The traction control, vsc light is illuminated intermittently over the past few years. i am scared that if i need to avoid a impeding accident that because the vsc system not working that i may not be able to successfully avoid a potentially fatal accident. i am also scared that the vehicle may rollover when doing a fast turn to avoid an accident. based on my research, i have found that this is a common problem among these vehicles and that there was a 2003 recall for this problem. there are a lot of problems with the 2002 vehicles and it needs to get fixed. must we first have an accident to win rights to be accommodated. does toyota not want to make good on it's product and satisfy all owners/customers. i worry every time i drive my vehicle and thank god each time i reach my destination without incident. *tr

My wife was driving down a paved road on a dry day and the vehicle swerved to the left accompanied by horrible grinding noises and beeping sounds and the vsc/trac lights on. it was very scary. i disconnected the battery to reset the computer. it worked for a few miles and then it happened again the same swerving to the left w/ the grinding noises. the vehicle is unsafe to drive. i researched it on edmunds.com, carproblemzoo.com and the toyota forums and it seems to be a common problem. when will toyota fix this problem? i love the truck but it is unsafe to use. *tr

Same problem like everyone else i've read about. the traction control, vsc, brake light, and abs light on. dealership says no recall but they recalled all 2003 models for the same issue. vehicle lights are off when vehicle is started, after 2-3 miles all the lights come on then the car is hard to handle due to traction control making the car unstable. this has been occurring for quite a while now. the vsc/trac light on my 2002 toyota sequoia comes on after driving for a few minutes. when this occurs it feels like the vehicle looses power and goes into "anti lock" mode. it's a scary feeling when driving at highway speeds. once the vsc warning lights come on the vehicle drives normally, will do it again and again. the dealership said that it cost 800.00 dollars to repair. i can't afford to have the repair made and feel i should not have to. if the 2003 model has been recalled for the same problem and so many other 2002 sequoia owners have reported the same problem, why shouldn't our trucks also qualify for recall and dealer repair at no cost to us. must we first have an accident to win rights to be accommodated. does toyota not want to make good on it's product and satisfy all ownere/customers. i worry every time i drive my vehicle and thank god each time i reach my destination without incident. *kb

I have taken my truck to multiple toyota dealerships to identify why the vsc trac, trac lights, brake and abs lights are on. they continue to give me the run around. the latest dealership wants to add and remove parts at will with no certain what the problem is. originally they told me that it would be $1921 and now they are coming back saying it will be an additional $2500. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that the variable speed control came on and caused the vehicle to shake. the failure occurred at various speeds. the failure caused the vehicle to slow down dramatically and vehicles following behind him have no warning. the contact scheduled an appointment with the dealer. the contact stated the failure was identical to recall campaign 10v176000, electronic stability control for the 2003 toyota sequoia. the contact was not aware of the failure mileage. the current mileage was 166990.

While driving a 2002 toyota sequoia sr5 2 wheel drive suv near the end of march 2009, the trac off, vsc trac, brake and abs warning lights simultaneously came on. i was traveling approximately 55 mph on a dry road at night in heavy traffic. i moved off the highway to check the manual which emphasized the possible seriousness of each light. it said to contact a toyota dealer. i called earnhardt toyota in mesa arizona who finally worked on the vehicle several days later for the vsc/trac/brake/abs problem, and a front brake vibration/pulsation. no help on the pulsation problem since i was told i needed to turn the rotors again. on the vehicle stability control/traction control/anti-lock braking system/brake warning lights, the service associate offered that it was a "common" problem, could be caused by a loose gas cap or an expensive computer (in the thousands of dollars). he sated that no "codes" were set other than a "low voltage" which could be caused by a bad battery or corroded connection. i cleaned the battery terminals completely, checked the battery, and made sure the gas cap was tight. the warning lights now come on at some point every time i drive the sequoia. earnhardt toyota told me it should not affect the actual braking systems. how do they know that? being told of a false continuous or intermittent safety warning light can lull one into a questionable sense of safety. these lights and safety systems need to work reliably without having toyota just say they know about this common problem. does it affect actual vehicle stability control and emergency braking? on numerous internet sites, i find this same problem is mentioned frequently. also a large number of complaints are on file now with the nhtsa. i rely on the warning lights and their underlying systems to work as advertised, but toyota now makes me doubt that reliance. does there have to be a large "body count" for nhtsa to order a recall to fix this well known safety problem? *tr

When turning and accelerating to enter a roadway, the vehicle loses power due to the vsc system engaging. this defect poses a serious hazard when attempting to enter traffic. this issue is widespread and has been ongoing for several years with no resolution by the manufacturer. *tr

In feb. 2009, while driving to work, the brakes on my sequoia began to lock and the engine started making a loud grinding sound and sensor lights began to blink uncontrollably. i could not control the car steering and was lucky that i was able to pull over the side of the road. this problem continued and i took it to my toyota dealer who charged me $2700.00 and blamed the problem on rats. after picking up my car from the dealership the problem continued a few weeks later and the same dealership still insisted that it was rats and charged me an additional $2300.00. yet this problem persisted so i took it to a local mechanic who has no ties with toyota and he replaced a computer sensor. the problem went away for at least two years until recently during a recent rain storm it started to act up again. driving this car has been unpredictable and scary at best. i came into several close calls with other vehicles on the road while driving when my car would loose all ability to steer and my brakes would lock during several instances. the experience has been a mind game and has taken a toll in my confidence in driving because i believed my dealership when they told me it was not the car, but because of rats, which i now know after reading other customers complaints on line that it was the way the car was manufactured. i lost a lot of faith in my toyota dealership here in guam. i need your help to tell these people to recall my car to fix it even though it is 12 years old. i spent a lot of money when i invested in this car and i don't have the money to buy a new vehicle at this time. i am afraid an accident will occur to customers like me unless toyota admits they have a problem with their vehicles. *tr

Check engine, vsc control and vsc lights come on when the weather is in the low 30's or colder. usually combined with a slow accelerator pedal. truck works okay, but pedal has to be pushed down all the way to make it go. the problem disappears when the temperature goes up to 40 degrees or above outside, and the truck has been turned off, and restarted. *tr

My vsc and vsc trac off lights in dash panel lit up. i looked in owner's manual and it said to take the vehicle to the dealer if that happens. dealer said i had a bad ecu computer and it needed to be replaced at $2500. after this was fixed and i went to pick vehicle up i noticed the light was still on. the dealer said that another code came up and the steering angle sensor needed to be replaced at $614. i think that is crap and that these systems are related and go together and both should be covered by extended warranty. *tr

Driving a 2002 toyota sequoia and suddenly the truck rattles and shakes violently and vehicle almost stops in the middle of the road and had to drive to the shoulder to avoid accident. the vehicle stability control, abs, and traction control lights on the dash board lit up and vehicle had to stop. turned off engine, removed key, waited and restarted truck again. lights went off and after a short drive from incident , it happened again narrowly avoiding an accident. vehicle violently shakes and slowed down. i had to turn off the engine again and restart. i took the truck to a local toyota dealership to have it diagnosed and problem could not be replicated. this is not the first time this happened on this vehicle. had history of at least 3-5 separate incidents far apart in occurrence but resolves or hides itself. no parts replaced as of yet, but aware of other owner's having same problems with vsc/abs /trac on this toyota model. *tr

Toyota sequoia 2002 vsc off and vsc trac lights are on continuously. internet forums indicate that this is a problem across other models like the tundra and 4runner irrespective of model year, and that the problem is due to defective sensors shipped with the vehicles. *tr

Vsc, traction control, anti-lock brake, and parking brake lights on the dash illuminated while driving. so, our vehicle has no antilock braking capability, traction control or skid control. mechanic reports that the skid control ecu needs to be replaced--at a cost of $2200. seems to be a common issue with this vehicle and toyota needs to remedy it. *tr

The vsc system malfunctioned causing the brakes to suddenly apply while driving. this nearly sent me into another lane of traffic. i took the car to the dealer and was told the vsc computer was bad. after some research i discovered that there are numerous people with the same issue. *tr

While driving at even speeds and without turning the wheel or applying the brakes or gas, the car will suddenly swerve to the right all by itself. additionally, the anti-lock brakes seem to have a problem with engaging even when i am not in a skid or heavy braking pattern. i have filed two complaints with toyota corporate and have been told there is nothing they can do. the problem has gotten progressively worse and because i fear for my safety and the safety of my passengers, i have taken my car to a toyota dealership and had the "yaw rate sensor" replaced. i visited two dealerships in my area and both were familiar with sequoias (model years 2001-2003 and some 2004) having this problem. my internet research suggests there are many people having this problem. according to toyota, my yaw rate sensor is faulty and it detects that my car is skidding even though it is not. when that happens, the skid control system attempts to correct the skid. however, since i wasn't skidding to begin with, the correction causes the car to swerve rapidly and uncontrollably to the right, generally into the next lane. i have narrowly avoided hitting cars several times. toyota tells me that there is also a brake booster problem and that i may need to replace the skid control computer. i find this unacceptable. i do not have the $3-5k to do all this work. i did replace the yaw rate sensor, which cost me $811 and i'm hoping that will fix the problem, but this is not a maintenance or repair issue. this is a faulty part sold by a car manufacturer and they are not doing anything to help the consumers who purchased from them. based on my personal experience, i am certain people have died or will die from this problem. it comes on so quickly that you cannot possibly avoid it. i feel this warrants immediate inspection by the nhtsa. this started a couple of years ago on a sporadic basis and has gotten progressively worse/more frequent.

Vsc trac, vsc off, all on at once. obd ii codes point to speed sensor, brake pedal switch and abs computer malfunction. dealer recommends changing brake booster and abs computer system. from the available information on the internet this is a very common problem for first generation toyota sequoia's. the abs and vsc malfunction can cause longer stopping distance, and swerving under emergency circumstances and should be a safety concern. *tr

Vsc (vehicle stability control) and trac (traction control) lights come on and stay on. both systems are not working. this is a major safety issue. took to a dealer and was told it would cost $1000's of dollars to replace a computer or two. i just bought this vehicle used and has no warranty and no recourse from toyota to fix it. read on many message boards that this is a problem with lots of owners on 2001 and 02, even as late as the 03 and 04 too. this needs to be recalled and fixed. they know of this problem but will not do anything to fix it. you need to make them since they won't do it for the safety of their vehicle owners... thanks *tr

2002 toyota sequoia vsc (traction control) system randomly fails along with brake lights coming on the dash. this happens often is and completely random. the car has been into the dealer on several instances and the dealer has been unable to correct the issue. when the vsc system fails the car looses all traction control and makes it very difficult to manager the massive rear wheel drive car in bad weather. the brake light also comes on randomly -- often scares the driver and has the potential to cause a very serious accident. again, this happens often and then manages to re-set itself. sometime is only lasts minutes and other times it last days. this is a very serious issue and will cause serious accidents. the is a known issue and this problem is being experienced by many sequoia owners. normal driving will lead up to this failure --- again it is random and not linked to any one event. when it happens the operator looses all traction control along with several lights (inclusive of the brake light) being displayed on the dash. the car is near impossible to control in the snow or rain given the rear wheels start to slip immediately. as stated, this has been into the toyota dealer several times and they have not been able to fix the issue. note -- this has been happening ever since the car was purchased brand new from the dealer and lately the occurrences have increased significantly. *tr

I just replaced the steering angle sensor at cost of $600 & now skid control computer not working & repair cost is $2300. the vehicle skid control system helps provide integrated control of the systems such as anti-lock brake system, traction control, engine control, etc. automatically controls the brakes and engine to help prevent the vehicle from skidding when cornering on a slippery road or surface or operating steering wheel abruptly. *tr

Toyota sequoia 2002 abs, parking brake light and trak warning lights turn on and stay on when the vehicle starts. toyota dealers say that the computer in the abs system is bad. the vehicle when going thru a bump or an uneven terrain loses power momentarily. it happens very often, almost every time the vehicle passes on bumps. i claimed to toyota that this is a safety design problem but toyota refuses to fix it. repairs are about 3 to 4 thousand dollars. *tr

Vsc lights on 2002 toyota sequoia code # dlc3 steering angle sensor bad. *tr

(1) the dashboard lights for abs, vsc, & traction control flickered, and then remained on permanently. (2) the abs and vsc have malfunctioned which seriously affects the braking & stability control of the vehicle in emergency handling situations, endangering person(s) in vehicle. (3) technician at marin toyota in san rafael, ca stated this was a common failure of the 2002 sequoia. (4) searching online forums and the nhtsa complaint database also show this a common problem. (5) our family needs to be safe in this car. i hope something can be done. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that the vehicle stability control and the traction control light remained illuminated. also, the contact mentioned that while driving during inclement weather, the brakes made a loud grinding noise and did not engage in a timely manner. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the master cylinder needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 60,000.

I have two problems with my 2002 toyota sequoia with 27k miles on it. 1. the vsc light will sometimes comes on and stay on during normal driving conditions. it will only turn off if the engine is turn off and back on. 2. the ac does not work, the ac led will flashes but no cold air. *tr

The warning lights abs, vsc, emergency brakes, track, slip indicator comes on all the time after engine start running. in certain instances, the vehicle does not respond to acceleration for few seconds. the problem started around 70k miles. toyota dealer has check the vehicle and said that the problem is the ecu computer and the estimated cost is about $3,000.oo dollars with only 3 month warranty. the mechanic explained that the vehicle would be able to brake but non of the features above will be functioning. the mechanic also stated that this is very common problem with sequoia models but there is no recall or warranty for this problem at the time it was diagnosed. since the repair for our suv is not affordable for us and there is so much uncertainty in its safety, we use it in a limited basis.

1)took my 2002 toyota sequoia to the dealer to perform 50,000 mile service. they performed the service and replaced the battery. when picking up the car i noticed vehicle skid control (vsc) and abs lights were off. *jb 2) i asked the dealer to check this problem and they said that the ecu (computer) that controls these safety systems had failed itself and disabled the above mentioned safety features. 3) the dealer wants $2300 from me to fix this problem. *jb

My vsc/abs/skid light up on my dash, stay lit, go off come back on. sometimes for a few hours sometimes for a few days. i have to replace front brake pads about twice a year. i have had to replace front rotors twice. traction control kicks in at random times. rear window motor stopped working. rear hatch handle broke internally. tires wear unevenly, even after several alignments. lh power mirror motor stopped working, motor makes clicking sound and will not adjust. factory dvd player stopped working. the fuel gauge is erratic. sometimes it works, sometimes not. *tr

(1)the dashboard lights for abs, vsc, & traction control flickered, and then remained on permanently. (2)the abs and vsc have malfunctioned which seriously affects the braking & stability control of the vehicle in emergency handling situations, endangering person(s) in vehicle. (3)right toyota in az could not determine problem, although technician stated this was a common failure of the 2002 sequoia. *tr

Driving at 70 mph. on the express way all of a sudden the asc and traction control light started to flicker and anti-locking brake engaged by itself severely. brought the car to about 30 mph. in matter of seconds. the truck started to swerve to the right and had to cross 3 lanes to the shoulder. very fortunate did not get in an accident with 4 passengers in the truck. the toyota dealer ship identified he problem of "yaw sensor" failure. i believe this is a safety issue and this failure could have caused an accident with potentially at least some sever injuries.*jb

I bought a "toyota certified" 2002 toyota sequoia in late '04. roughly 6 months into ownership - my vsc (traction control) system began having intermittent issues - 2 full-day trips to the dealership made no results - the dealership was unable to recreate the problem. another 4-6 months later, the vsc failed completely, and after investigation, i find the issue is very common and very expensive to fix. the failure leaves me without abs and without vsc (two of the reasons i bought the car i did) and at an increased risk of having an accident, as without functional abs the brakes lock quite easily. calls to my dealership have left me with the impression the fix will be in the $2000 neighborhood, and i haven't yet come up with that. the incident date is approximate to the start of the issues. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact noticed that the stc light and the vsc tract sensor light illuminated and the front end of the vehicle shook violently when he was driving 70 mph. the contact pulled over and could find nothing wrong. when he turned the vehicle back on, the lights were still on although it no longer shook. when he got out and came back a couple hours later, the lights had turned off. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership but the dealer could not find anything wrong. recently, the lights illuminated more frequently and sometimes the vehicle shook and other times, it did not. the vehicle was taken back to the dealership but the dealer still could not find anything wrong. the failure continued. the vehicle was taken back to the dealership where the contact was informed that the yaw sensor was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired at the dealership. the manufacturer had not been notified. the current mileage was approximately 142,000. the failure mileage was approximately 30,000. updated 01/26/11*lj updated 04/13/11

2002 toyota sequoia has been operating since @ 62,000 miles with a non-functioning vsc/abs system. see that this has not yet been officially recalled, but can find all kinds of info and complaints on the web about this issue. dashboard lit up with all relative warning lights & vehicle has no abs nor vsc functionality. how could this important safety features well documented, chronic failure not be recalled? it is not exclusive to the 2002 model year either. this is very inappropriate. how many people have to die or get injured before this well documented safety equipment failure is responsibly addressed with a recall. i hope my complaint helps the tally towards this recall. consumers of this vehicle have bought it with a critical safety system that fails. toyota must be made to rectify this product safety and quality issue! *tr

I have had an issue with my vsc/trac off light since we bought it. the light would come on at seemingly random times, stay on until i restarted the truck - we were told it was not something we needed to worry about by the dealerships in fort worth (fort worth toyota). recently (2/2014 & 3/2014), as i was coming down a hill in our neighborhood, approaching a stop sign, there was a grinding sound and the vehicle would seem to be stopping instead of accelerating - and the vsc lights came on again. i immediately pulled over and stopped; i couldn't see anything wrong under the hood or near the wheel wells, which is where it sounded like it was coming from. it did not continue and did not happen again for about a week. the next time it happened i was on the highway at about 70 mph. it grinded for about a second and slowed me down abruptly, then stopped grinding. pretty hairy situation, going 70 and having your brakes slow you down. i have not had the issue looked at by a technician yet and am not driving the truck. in researching it, i found hundreds of online complaints and a recall for the 2003 model year on your website. [nhtsa campaign number: 10v176000 ] obviously, the 2002 model year should have been included, as i am seeing the exact same problem. *tr

Toyota is advising brakes need to be replaced. car has 260000 miles on it and is 1yr old. have complained about brake issue to toyota at 15000 miles. no solution toyota did nothing. brakes make grinding noise like gravel. also the vsc system engages and does not take power from drive train, result in very loud metal shearing noises from undercarriage. toyota is saying this is normal. toyota is advising the avg life of brakes on this car is approx 20000 miles there is a major design error between the vcs and the abs brake system resulting poor brake life and this can not be a safe situation when vsc does not release power to brakes when it activates. vcs also activates at drop of a hat. general brake design must have major design flaw if avg life is only 20000 miles. *nlm

While driving 20 mph on a icy road consumer lost control of the vehicle and rolled into a ditch. consumer felt that t stability of the vehicle was at fault. the were no injuries. *ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. while driving at an unknown speed the vehicle stability control activated at a low speed for a few seconds. he stated that his vehicle would not accelerate as quickly as he thought which increased the risk of a crash. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the failure. he was advised that his vehicle was not covered under warranty nor were there any related recalls. he was also informed that the vehicle was performing as normal. the contact referenced recall nhtsa campaign id number: 10v176000, traction control system that was a recall for the 2003 vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 50 and the current mileage was 130,000. updated 3/7/11 *cn updated 03/141//

Translate/ skid control ecu failing notice when weather is cold/wet. once car is warmed computers work. when car was newer skid control warning lights would come light. would reset once car was turned off/on. research on the internet has shown that same car model and year tends to have the same problem. *tr

I noted today the recall of 2003 toyota sequoia's due to issues with the vsc system. i am concerned that this does not include the 2002 models as i have had recurring issues with the vsc since day 1. at low speed, particularly on grades or while making sharp turns, the vsc will cause my vehicle to temporarily lose power. i have reported this on several occasion both to toyota and via telephone. it is so bad that i now know locations on my regular drives during which this will occur. so, i either go a little faster than i might otherwise on grades or i swerve out before making turns to make the angle less acute. obviously, not the safety we'd expect in a $40k vehicle. this issue also occurs going over slightly jarring bumps such as steep speedbumps or potholes. the vehicle temporarily loses power, which in this case can be possibly even more dangerous because we are often being followed by other vehicles traveling at normal speed. *tr
