We have classified the 189 complaints from 2002 Toyota Sequoia about ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL into the following categories.
The abs for the passenger front tire kicks in while driving. you can feel the abs pump the brake & the vehicle pulls to the right for a few seconds. then the vsc & traction control lights come on. twice i've had it diagnosed as a faulty yaw control sensor. it seems to happen more often while towing a trailer. this normally happens while on the highway at a steady speed.
Vse/trac light and trac off light comes on, beeping sound. traveling at 70 mph or 65 mph vehicle veers left and steering becomes difficult. just this happened three times within 24 hours on interstate driving. this is the same problem discussed in a recall of the 2003 through 2005 models. many problems of the same nature are reported on internet forums for the 2000 t-model. this is very dangerous. it happens when the road conditions are dry and no hazardous conditions.
Vsc trac and vsc off lights illuminated on dash while vehicle was in motion at 70 mph. lf wheel briefly pulsed brakes for no reason. lights stayed on after turning car off and re-starting. there are numerous online complaints about problems in toyota tundra/sequoia vsc computers causing this issue. 126k miles on vehicle.
While driving, without notice, vsc and trac lights, grinding noise and vibrations, deceleration, and pull to the right.
Trac off-road lights, trac vsc light, beeping, pulled right and decelerate on interstate. fornunately, in the right lane otherwise do would have caused a major accident. speed approximately 70 mph
While driving on the freeway at 70 mph the stability like blinks and beeps then the vsc trac/vsc off light come on. there is no control of brakes or gas. feel grinding in front of car. after managing to stop everything reset. has happened several times with no warning or reason as to why. have appointment with dealership to have fixed. but seems this is a common problem and very unsafe as to no warning and no control of the car when it does happen at any speed. the same problem in the 2003 model has been recalled. is it going to take an accident or death before this is investigated?
The vsc/abs indicator lights appear intermittently without any warning. the car beeps, makes a heavy grinding noise and the abs brakes are automatically engaged without any action by the driver regardless of the speed, or whether driving on a highway or city street. the car will fishtail. based on my research, i have found that this is a common problem among these vehicles and that there was a 2003 recall for this problem. this defect in the same model for the 2002 vehicles seems to be widespread. must we first have an accident to win rights to be accommodated. does toyota not want to make good on its product and satisfy all owners/customers. i worry every time i drive my vehicle and thank god each time i reach my destination without incident. this is the only vehicle we have to drive our severely disabled 10 year old daughter and cannot afford a new vehicle. we are really scared! see other identical consumer complaints at http://www.carcomplaints.com/toyota/sequoia/2002/brakes/electronic_stability_control-4.shtml
Vsc/trac indicator warning light comes and goes
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle began to vibrate severely and decelerated rapidly. the vehicle stability, traction and skid control warning lights illuminated prior to the failure. the contact was able to pull to the road side to switch off and restart the vehicle. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin was not included in the nhtsa campaign number: 10v176000(electronic stability control, traction control system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 96,000.
Vsc trac/ vsc off, abs, brake lighs come on the vsc trac and the vsc off light come on and off due to a faulty abs sensor. toyota dealer can not figure out why or how this faulty light comes on. did a research online and hundreds of thousand of other toyota sequoia owner had the same issues.
I have a problem with my trac and vsc light coming on while driving. the stability light would blink and beep and both the trac off and vsc light would come on. the brakes would also seem like it's grinding when the stability light is blinking and beeping. i have the exact same problem as this guy on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6qsguptdsq
I have a problem with my trac and vsc light coming on while driving. the stability light would blink and beep and both the trac off and vsc light would come on. the brakes would also seem like it's grinding when the stability light is blinking and beeping. i have the exact same problem as this guy on this video https://youtu.be/vgearn4nito
Identical problem as described by many others. vsc-trac and trac-off lights randomly illuminated on dry, level pavement when brakes were applied, causing a loud grinding noise (much louder than normal application of anti-lock brakes), and car pulled and would not stop no matter how hard the brake pedal was pressed. first couple times, brakes were applied to slow the vehicle in traffic, so the failure to fully stop wasn't noticed. then, i experienced an incident when the failure occurred coming to a stop sign. even with the brake pedal fully depressed, the vehicle continued into the intersection. had a car been coming in cross traffic, this would have resulted in an accident. after this incident, we took the car for service, and the yaw sensor had failed. the part was replaced at a cost of $800, and 3 months later, the vehicle is experiencing the vsc-trac and trac-off lights remaining illuminated after the self-check when the vehicle ignition is turned on. restarting the car typically clears the lights. repair shop has indicated that the the yaw sensor will not retain zero calibration. they set it, restart the vehicle, and it loses calibration. error code is now indicating that the control module (part# 89541-0c050) has failed (another $1200+ repair on top of the yaw sensor, which was also defective). these failures clearly put vehicles at risk of accidents, and it is difficult to understand why the 2003 sequoias were recalled for vsc issues, but not the 2002, when the parts being replaced fit both years. i am the original owner of this vehicle, and the issues began at 60,000 miles. the vehicle currently has only 62,000 miles.
This has happened about 10 times when the skid light will come on and the vehicle will go left to right and the brakes do not stop the vehicle. then the vsc off & vsc trac off lights will come on. this has happened at speeds from 15 - 60 mph at times you loose control of the vehicle at the higher speeds for a few seconds. if this ever happens in heavy traffic it will cause an accident. vehicle has been taken to a toyota specialist mechanic and they are still replacing parts. i understand that toyota recalled all 2003 sequoia's for this problem. my wife now refuses to drive the vehicle until it is fixed properly.
Abs system activates by itself driving on a flat, dry road. abs/trac lights have intermittently illuminated for a few years (without abs activation to the best of my knowledge, my wife drives the vehicle primarily), lights turn off when key is cycled, no codes present in the system when scanned previously. last occurrence for me was at 45mph, again a flat dry road. vsc/trac lights flash, a warning buzzer sounds, and the abs creates a loud grinding noise as it activates. vehicle pulled sharply to the left and up onto the center median. no accident due to a rounded curb and wide center median. however, if the center median were not there it could pull a vehicle into oncoming traffic on an undivided highway resulting in an accident.
Driving at 25 mph vehicle front end started vibrating violently. thought transmission or cvs joints had disintegrated. vsc lights lit up pulled over .found nothing wrong? has done numerous times during last year. started in july 2015 intermittently and currently happens daily. at 65 mph' suv front end slipped'. also pulls to right. scary what if on road curving left. people could possibly go off road and be killed and list it as 'driver fell asleep'. read on toyota forum website, 2003 were recalled. why not 2002????? people have taken 2002 sequoia to dealer and delear changed out sensor and computer chip and owners still experienced problem.
Vsc/abs/brake lights all illuminated on the dashboard. vehicle is unable to pass state safety inspection due to brake light being illuminated. in this vehicle having the vsc operational is far more dangerous. please order toyota to perform a recall as there is abundant evidence that the vehicle stability control/abs system on this vehicle is dangerous.
Now, before we changed the axle a new issue popped up as the abs module caused the vsc system to engage at low speed below 10 mph. after 10 mph the system worked fine. during that engagement of the system i could have been killed by oncoming traffic or injured very badly. so, the mechanic went back to change out the left axle and did a diagnostic test on the sensors, which the left front was not reading and the right was intermittent. that was baffling to the mechanic, so we talked and changed both sensors and the left axle. he checked the vehicle and the vsc system still engaged at the low speed below 10 mph, most of the vibration was gone but some was still there at 70 mph, which he agreed with me that it could be possibly the drive shaft that ties into the 4 wheel drive system. so he decides to do the diagnostic test in the 4x2 mode and 4x4 mode on all the sensors on each wheel. in the 4x4 mode all the sensors checked and read fine. the 4x2 mode check of the system revealed a problem with in the system that tied to the abs control module. so, as of now he has worked with me to really understand the problem with this vehicle type to try to get to the root cause. he has since not charged me for the sensors, until he can get the abs module checked out through a certified repair manufacturer who works on these parts on a regular basis.
I bought this vehicle last week and after being on the road for approximately 30 minutes, the vehicle jerks to the right, the anti skid light starts beeping, something starts grinding under the hood, and then it all stops and the vsc trac, vsc off, and check engine lights all come on. after pulling over and turning off the engine and turning it back on, the vsc lights went off, but the check engine light remained on. after getting back on the road, the same thing happened again in a matter of minutes. since then, the vehicle does the same exact thing every time i drive for more than about 20 minutes. sometimes the transition is smooth and sometimes it takes up to 20-25 seconds for the noise under the hood to go away.
The first time my abs/vcs trac lights came on was after i had to brake hard on a downward hill. i accelerated to climb the other side of the hill and it was after doing that which the vcs trac and trac off lights first came on at around 168,000 miles. there was a fast beeping sound lasting for maybe 10 sec then it regained power. now it will do it within just a few miles of our home. we have had several more occasions since this initial incident where there was a jerking/pulling of the right front tire. also the air conditioning would come on and off like it was trying to surge. also idles very low, below 500 rpm and then finally shuts off. this vehicle has become very dangerous to drive. we are not sure what to get fixed on it since we have read that other owners are being told that its anything from a yaw sensor, steering angle sensor, brake booster system, or a skid control computer issue. all of these are very pricey to get fixed and there are no guarantees that they will even correct the problem. most have had the yaw sensor replaced and it did not correct the problem. some of the mechanics we have talked to said that there could be brake dust or mud and road grime build up over the sensor making it malfunction and that it should be hosed off at an underbody carwash. we haven't tried this yet since we didn't put much faith in it until we discovered hearing again on youtube. the 2003 toyota sequoia vcs recall should be extended down to the 2002 models as well. we all are having the same issue that they did.
I was exiting the freeway, while coasting vehicles electronic stability control came on suddenly causing me to veer right, luckily there was nobody next to me. conditions did not warrant the esc to come on since pavement was dry and i was coasting. please address toyota about this issue or there will be injuries or deaths.
The vehicle was being driven on a dry paved road. the vsc and traction warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel as the vehicle pulled hard to the right, nearly causing an accident. the steering wheel becomes difficult to steer, the vehicle loses power, and the brakes inadvertently engage, making a terrible grinding noise. the problem happens at least once, each time the vehicle is restarted. there was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number: 10v176000 (traction control system) for the 2003 toyota sequoia - this failure is most likely related. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. while driving 70 mph, the vsc track warning indicators illuminated. the contact stated that there was a loud grinding noise under the vehicle. the contact also stated that the vehicle started grinding and shook when braking. the vehicle was driven to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 81,069. updated 8/21/15*cn the consumer stated the alarm sounded, vsc and traction control lights illuminated. the vehicle veered to the right while driving in the left lane. updated 08/27/15*jb
This has occurred several times: grinding noise, car pulls to the right and vsc and trac lights come on indicating vsc and trac are disengaged. can drive ok after this occurs. however, when car is turned off and started again the warning lights go out and it's impossible to predict when it will occur again. there was a recall issued in 2010 for the 2003 model sequoia with this same issue, however this recall for some reason did not cover the 2002 which is having the same problem! please have toyota expand the recall to include other years as this is a common problem in sequoias!!! *tr..updated 10/26/16 *bf updated 10/16/217*cn
After driving 45 miles then driving in a busy town then back 45 miles to home town i was going 55 mph and all the sudden i lost power, a dinging noise happened and i lost breakage, the vcs off and vcs track light came on, the vehicle start driving rough. i then went home. then after a few hour i had to go get my son i started the vehicle and noticed the lights were off, after only going 3 miles and with my son in the vehicle it made the ding noise lost power lights vcs off vcs trak lights came back on, very scary, hope they recall it soon, my sequoia was made august 2002. *tr
The vsc randomly activated twice within 10-15 minutes while traveling on a dry, clean interstate freeway at about 70 mph, causing the vehicle to swerve considerably. there were no external circumstances that appeared to cause this incident. weather conditions: clear skies, sunshine, 80 degrees, dry, level roads. after the second incident, we were able to get the vehicle to a nearby dealership. we since learned the 2003 sequoia apparently had a recall regarding this same situation. *tr
2002 toyota sequoia vsc trac sensor lights turning on and off and hearing grinding noise when it auto-engage and disengage in motion.
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. while driving approximately 70 mph, the vsc, abs, trac, and brake warning lights sporadically illuminated. as a result, the vehicle pulsated and veered to the right. the contact stated that the vehicle was exhibiting the same failure as listed in nhtsa campaign number: 10v176000 (electronic stability control, traction control system). the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the sas sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 121,463.
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that the vehicle was hesitant to accelerate after a complete stop. the accelerator pedal was applied and the vehicle jerked into gear. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the euc needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 10v176000 (electronic stability control, traction control system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 291,000.
While driving on fwy, vsc light comes on, the brakes are being applied by the system, causing pulling of the steering into other lanes. was able to pull over, and it stopped at 10 mph, turned off car and it re-set system, it happened 6 times on the way home, almost causing accidents as it jerks the steering immediately as it applies the brakes to gain stability again. it has happened intermittently ever since, even at slow speeds. it is in shop now, $3500 to fix it, it is a well documented problem on the net, this should be a recall. someone will get killed, a cyclist in a shoulder, or car hitting another or losing control and rolling over. with all the complaints regarding the vsc system, how can you ignore it?
No matter what speed, the vsc alarm goes off, the car brakes violently and pulls to the right, and makes a horrible grinding sound. then the vsc light stays on until the car is turned off and reset. under warranty, i went to gilroytoyota in 2014 to get this fixed. they told me it was the yaw rate sensor, however that isn't covered in the warranty. it would cost around $800-$1000 to replace. they did replace the brake booster assembly, and that worked for about 6 months until the vsc light came back on and the car pulled and braked again. very very dangerous when driving on the freeway when this happens, and the alarm goes off and the car brakes and pulls, could result in accident. makes a horrible grinding noise as well that i can feel in the brake pedal when this happens. the car is always in motion when this happens, always on asphalt, not on dirt or in 4 wheel drive. (i don't use the 4 wheel drive) happens at any speed, either turning or going straight.
While driving downhill and around a curve at about 25mph, my 2002 sequoia began beeping, making a loud grinding noise and the traction light came on. i had little to no control of the vehicle. problem lasted a few seconds. fortunately, i was in a neighborhood with wide streets less than a mile from my home and was able to get home safely. considering that i was on a curve and it was raining, i thought it may be a one time issue with traction control. i drove the truck for a few days with no issues. yesterday, my wife was rounding a curve at about 50mph on a highway in heavy traffic on dry pavement and the truck did the same thing. she narrowly avoided a collision and was able to pull to the shoulder. since then, the truck will intermittently beep and grind for a couple of seconds before the vsc off light comes on. as long as the light is on, indicating the vsc is disengaged, there are no problems. problem seems to occur more when rounding a curve and braking, but that is not always the case. it has happened at various speeds, during both braking and accelerating, and while on flat ground or a hill. the problem only lasts a few seconds, but you have no control of the vehicle during that time. the vehicle will accelerate, decelerate, brake, or pull on its own. i am extremely concerned about losing control and wrecking, potentially causing injury to my wife and kids or another driver. upon researching, i found recall number 10v176000, nhtsa action number ea09006. this recall was for 2003 sequoias with a very similar problem with the vehicle stability control (vsc) system. why was the 2002 model not included in the recall since it seems to have the same issue? *tr
Last month, while traveling home from summer vacation on flat ground, at approximately 60 mph, the vsc, trac lights came on in the dash. there was a terrible grinding noise from under the car and beeping inside the car. the car pulled hard to the right and decelerated abruptly in the middle of a busy highway. thank goodness i was able to pull into the turn lane and limp into a gas station. this occurred three more times over the next 500 miles until i got home. i took it to the dealer, they replaced the yaw sensor. only 3 days after that, it happened again. took it to the dealer, they replaced two brake sensors and a master cylinder. today, five days after that, it happened again. this time, thankfully at only 25 mph with no traffic. this is a very scary, dangerous problem that toyota should not be ignoring. it has been recalled in the 2003 model, and should be in the 2002 model as well! *tr
Driving on paved public road, dry road conditions in summertime at low speed,10-20 mph, the vsc and trac off warning lights on instrument panel light up with and audible bell type alarm at the same time the right front wheel makes a loud thump causing the vehicle to pull hard to the right and with very hard front end vibration. at which time there is no brake control, steering control or acceleration control for approximately 20 seconds that has caused a few near miss vehicle collisions with other vehicles or off the road towards an embankment. the sequoia was taken to a toyota dealership service center where the technician stated they can only clear the fault code in the vehicle's computer. since the fault code has been cleared, 5 more episodes of the same identical senerios with both wet and dry road conditions but not standing water on the roadway, and also a couple of times during speeds between 60-70 mph. this is an intermittent anomaly, but happens 3-4 days in a row between instances.
I drive a 2002 sequoia and have had about 8 instances where the trac off, trc vsc, and slip indicator lights all come on while the truck feels like it locks up and a beeping alarm sounds and a pulling to the right with a grinding noise . this morning the slip indicator lights stayed on with the grinding noise seems like a few seconds longer than yesterday . i was about to pull off of the road when the other two lights came on and the car drove normal when the lights are on . when you turn the engine off and restart the lights go off. however the error occurs on a daily basis now . the roads i travel are mainly highway and have been dry . i have noticed that there are many complaints for the same issue and that toyota did issue a recall for the 2003 model year .. this is a very dangerous issue and needs correction . one would think that the recall should extend to all years . *tr
the skid control lights come on for no reason the whole car shakes and there is a thumping and grinding noise from the vehicle along with the beeping warning sound. it happens at different speeds sometimes when breaking or turning and losing power. this last a few seconds then the vsc light comes on and the vsc off light and all is ok while lights are on. *tr
When driving down the highway the traction control automatically just come on the whole steering wheel vibrate will be like you're putting on the brakes real fast until the traction control light comes on then everything will stop. this is happened several times dry roads.
I was leaving a parking lot making yielding to make a right turn onto a main right when suddenly my car started to shake and pulled to the right. i had no control of the steering or brakes. the vsc trac and trac light sensor lights came one and i heard this awful grinding noise. i proceeded to drive home slowly on back roads. once i got home i looked the problem up on the internet and found out that toyota had a recall on the 2003 model for the same problem, but not the 2002. i called the dealership and they told me the problem will cost anywhere from $1500-$4000 to fix. my car only has 114,000 miles on it and i find this totally unacceptable. this is obviously a manufacture defect. *tr
On interstate twice doing the posted speed 75mph i heard a grinding, vsc antilock brake lights come on, vehicle suddenly pulls to the right. luckily i gained control and avoided a major accident. have had brakes checked and now told its the sensor. very costly repairs. toyota should have a recall on this issue. could cause a deadly accident. *js
First incident: on the freeway car all of a sudden made a beeping sound (similar to no seat belt sound) vehicle lost power almost like it downshifted. vsc, trac off lights all came on and the car wouldn't brake! i had to consistently pump on the brake and pull the emergency brake to slow it down. brakes were grinding and it felt as if it was trying to lock but yet skipping (clunk, clunk, cluck). pulled off to the side, turned off engine, and then resumed. i had to pull over 5 separate times due to the same issue. luckily i allowed myself a huge space in between myself and other cars. if not, there would had been a for sure accident. car continues with the same problems. i've done a whole lot of researching in regards to this vehicle and it seems that it's a ecu issue. i am aware that toyota has recalled all 2003 model sequoia's on up but not 2002 on under. this is a huge safety concern of mine and even if i purchased a new ecu there is not guarantee that it's been addressed or fixed for this model. according to the toyota rep. i just got off the phone with 30 minutes ago. please help! and thank you in advance. *tr
All of sudden my car starts to make beeping sound, clunking and thumping. grinding noise. braking is hard and seems unstable. skid control light came on and vsc track light came on as well. this happens on a flat, normal road condition on a sunny day. it feels very dangerous and toyota needs to recall and fix it asap. this happens regularly and i am afraid it may lead to an accident. *tr
Was traveling along road at 20 mph and the vsc lights came on. i had heard about the other problems that occur when this happens so i immediately pulled to the side of the road and turned the car off and then restarted it. upon restarting, no indication of the problem persisted. so far it has not happened again. i am worried that it will happen again as has been described hundreds of times already. please fix this issue toyota!!!!!!!!!!!! *tr
I have a 2002 sequoia, a couple of weeks ago while driving at 35 mph my brakes locked. i took it immediately to my brake guy; he looked it over, put it on the machine, found nothing. i left thinking it might have been something on the road that i missed seeing, that set off the traction sensors. a week went by without incident before it happened again; this time at 40mph on a flat clean highway. the trac off, vsc trac & the slip indicator light came on while the front end shook violently and pulled hard to the right. i was unable to adjust the brake, as it felt locked and my steering column, while vibrating madly was near impossible to turn, it was like driving an old style truck without power steering. i went to another brake shop, they hooked it up to the machine, and again nothing showed up!! today, five days later, while driving home with my children on a major highway doing the posted 65mph it happened again. i was suddenly unable to maneuver my vehicle, the brakes locked, the steering locked, and my vehicle pulled to the right. i just held on and prayed as my car pulled off the road, thank heavens the ground was flat. i have only been that afraid for my family's safety once before, and that was in the middle of a tornado. toyota has a serious problem here! *tr
Traction system intermittently turns on with no pattern-wet or dry surface, speed, turning. have had all oxygen sensors replaced, check engine light resolved but traction still engages, seizes the engine. evap. system fixed, tires, wheel bearings checked, thermostat fixed. still traction is kicking on. extremely dangerous for me and my three young children. i am afraid to drive, even around town. toyota what are you going to do about this and all the other similar complaints on 2002 sequoias. do you need a fatality on record prior to acting? how am i supposed to get to work to pay for repairs? how will my children get to school and daycare? please help. *tr
The abs, vsc, and brake warning light came on. took to dealership per owners manual and they wanted up to $4,000 to replace various computers and sensors. there seems to be nothing wrong with performance of vehicle and i suspect it is just an issue with a sensor or the warning light itself. should be easy and inexpensive fix but dealership seems to be taking advantage of the situation. researched on internet and found many, many other toyota owners with the same issue with the same vehicle. this should be a recall and toyota should step up and fix (or be forced to fix) this cronic issue with these vehicles. *js
Traction control /vsc comes on all the time. *tr
Vehicle had violent grinding and braking of the right front wheel causing a hard pull to the right. vsc and trac lights and warning buzzers came on. turned vehicle off and restarted five minutes later. same thing has happened three times since within 6 months. the last time was on the interstate and caused hard pull to the right. dealer cannot identify problem and claim they have never heard of this before. *tr
A week prior my vsc trac and vsc off lights came on but nothing else occurred. now out of nowhere my vehicle will make an audible sound and start rumbling and pulling to the right and slowing but won't allow me to brake. this can last anywhere from 10 seconds to 30 seconds. sometimes the picture of the car with the skid marks will light up (even on dry roads) other times the abs light will come on. once the beeping and vibrations stop, the vsc trac and vsc off lights remain on until i turn the car off. i drive 30 miles each way to work daily. this is very dangerous and scary as i have no idea what triggers the episodes. *tr
Car was going 20mph on dry pavement. all of the sudden the vehicle stability control (vsc) activated causing the vehicle to shake and slowdown. when the vsc is engaged car is unable to accelerate. this happen on multiple times with car going 20-40mph. on roads with high traffic with cars behind me and the sudden activation of the vsc, causing my car to suddenly and abruptly slow down, almost cause the car behind to rear end my vehicle. on one occasions, my children were in the car. on many internet forums, many sequoia owners are experiencing the same problem. this is a very dangerous defects that toyota needs to address and fix asap. *tr
Vehicle vsc and trac is auto-engaging during a drive without cause. the vehicle will jerk to a side, and a grinding noise will occur until the vehicle comes to a stop. braking is slow and takes much longer to stop the vehicle. electronic beeping is also heard throughout. vsc and trac lights come on and stay on after the incident until the vehicle is turned off. *tr
