Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2002 Toyota Sequoia

While turning a corner at an intersection in d position, suddenly there was no power to the wheels while pressing gas pedal, abs, vsc and trac and cel lights came on. this could have resulted in an accident, had there been more traffic. after pulling to the shoulder with remaining speed of vehicle, turned into p, then back into d, vehicle jerked forward with crunching noise while pressing brakes firmly! shut off vehicle, restarted, then drove ok, but above mentioned lights stayed on for a an hour. later that evening, the warning lights turned back off to normal. this is the second time that we had a similar incident involving loss of power in combination with vsc trac and cel warning lights immediately after. *tr

Vsc trac, vsc off,all on at once.obd ii codes point to speed sensor, brake pedal switch and abs computer malfunction. dealer recommends changing brake booster and abs computer system. from the available information on the internet this is very common problem for first generation toyota sequoias. the abs and vsc malfunction can longer stopping distance, and swerving under emergency circumstance and should be a safety concern. *tr

I purchased a new 2002 toyota sequoia in april of 2002. in january of 2004, i was on the new jersey turnpike and when i went to stop my vehicle, my brake pedal went all the way to the floor and i was luckily able to get into the shoulder and finally get the vehicle stopped without hitting anyone. it appeared to me that the master cylinder might have malfunctioned. the truck was towed to a toyota dealer and they could not find anything wrong with the vehicle. when i picked up the vehicle, it appeared as though the brake pedal was back into its normal position but the dealer could not explain why. during the week of february 12, 2010 this same problem occurred twice and i was almost involved in two separate accidents. i took the truck to the toyota dealer and once again the computer and other indicator lights were not showing any problems. after several hours of sitting there the brakes returned to their normal position just like before. i then took the mechanic for a ride in a back lot of the dealership and was able to make them fail once again. after this occurrence, the brakes never returned to their normal positions. i left the truck at the dealership for them to investigate. the mechanic said that there were no known problems in this area and he said after talking to several toyota engineers that it could be a number of things: 1)master cylinder 2)brake booster 3)brake actuator 4)computer the mechanic and the engineers felt that is was probably the brake actuator so i went ahead with the repair. but they were not 100% sure that this was the problem. but they did agree that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. the brakes of course are working. i talked to several other mechanics and they have said that toyota knows that these actuators are bad but are not doing anything about it. they also mentioned that the vsc/ecu computer modules are a defect as well. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a used 2002 toyota sequoia suv which was purchased in 2005. he stated that the vehicle would accelerate unintentionally while in the park position. the rpms would idle extremely high and the vehicle would attempt to accelerate. he had to depress the brake pedal hard enough to prevent the vehicle from moving forward. there were no recalls describing the failure. the contact was awaiting repairs. the failure and current mileages were 99,500.

Makes a grinding noise, brakes on one side and pulls to one side. skid indicator light, trac off light, and vsc light all come on and stay on. vehicle decelerates momentarily, then resumes normal driving. lights stay on until you turn off the vehicle. *tr

I have a 2002 toyota sequoia limited that has an error message on safety equipment. vehicle stability control (vsc) and abs (anti-lock-brake) system lights are constantly on, causing me concern. i see toyota initiated a recall on the 2003 model for this concern, yet not on my model year? i see numerous blogs with this concern as i search for solutions. this was a very expensive vehicle that i purchased due to the reputation of this company for building safe automobiles, i am disappointed in toyota's lack of response. please help if you have the ability/authority. thank you *tr

Accelerator pedal position sensor circuit malfunction. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact stated the vsc, vsc-off, emergency brake, and check engine warning lights would intermittently illuminate on the dashboard. in addition, the vehicle would abnormally accelerate sporadically when sitting idle at a stop. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for further analysis. the failure mileage was 113,000 and the current mileage was 116,000.

Driving vehicle on interstate when it suddenly braked and pulled to the right, creating a dangerous situation just avoiding the car next to me.vsc and trac lights came on.dealer replaced numerous parts and vehicle has been ok for a few years, then lights are on again and more parts replaced...now lights on again and dealer diagnosed it as brake master cylinder,,,$825.00,,, after spending thousands already on this problem..i had a independent repair shop replace master cylinder and lights still on with 3 new codes..love the vehicle but so sick of this issue...and worry about it suddenly braking and pulling...02 needs a recall.. *tr

To disengage the cruise control on my vehicle (2002 toyota sequoia sr5 2wd) with the brake pedal, it requires excessively hard braking everytime. this operational condition was first observed within the last three months by me. *tr

Today on my way home, the vsc off and vsc trac lights came on. whenever i apply my brakes, the car shakes a lot. i thought it was the rotors but i now think it was this system turning on when it wasn't suppose to. on the way home today, my sequoia did not shake at all. there are a ridiculous amount of threads on tundrasolutions and edmunds about these lights coming on with 00-03 toyota sequoias. most everyone has had to have a computer replaced because of this. quotes for this are between $1,500 and $2,500. i don't have that type of money and i don't feel i should be responsible for this problem because it is a safety issue and so many others have had this same problem. there should be a recall. i just bought this vehicle a few months ago because we expecting our second child and needed a larger vehicle. i chose a toyota because of reliability but i'm afraid that could be a problem if so many people are having issues with this vehicle. *tr

The traction control, vsc light is illuminated intermittently over the past few years. i am scared that if i need to avoid a impeding accident that because the vsc system not working that i may not be able to successfully avoid a potentially fatal accident. i am also scared that the vehicle may rollover when doing a fast turn to avoid an accident. based on my research, i have found that this is a common problem among these vehicles and that there was a 2003 recall for this problem. there are a lot of problems with the 2002 vehicles and it needs to get fixed. must we first have an accident to win rights to be accommodated. does toyota not want to make good on it's product and satisfy all owners/customers. i worry every time i drive my vehicle and thank god each time i reach my destination without incident. *tr

My wife was driving down a paved road on a dry day and the vehicle swerved to the left accompanied by horrible grinding noises and beeping sounds and the vsc/trac lights on. it was very scary. i disconnected the battery to reset the computer. it worked for a few miles and then it happened again the same swerving to the left w/ the grinding noises. the vehicle is unsafe to drive. i researched it on edmunds.com, carproblemzoo.com and the toyota forums and it seems to be a common problem. when will toyota fix this problem? i love the truck but it is unsafe to use. *tr

2002 toyota sequoia electrical issues-air conditioning comes on spontaneously without initiation by driver, back window always failing to operate properly, not opening or closing @ times, now stuck closed, tracking device comes on for long periods with used & new tires, even after numerous professional alignments, and proper driving, engine light always on. all of these issues have been bought to the attention of toyota service dept , the suv has been inspected by toyota on numerous occasions, and parts have reportedly been replaced, however, these issues continue, there are also no devices in place to keep the driver's mat from curling over the accelerator and brake pedals. *tr

While driving a 2002 toyota sequoia sr5 2 wheel drive suv near the end of march 2009, the trac off, vsc trac, brake and abs warning lights simultaneously came on. i was traveling approximately 55 mph on a dry road at night in heavy traffic. i moved off the highway to check the manual which emphasized the possible seriousness of each light. it said to contact a toyota dealer. i called earnhardt toyota in mesa arizona who finally worked on the vehicle several days later for the vsc/trac/brake/abs problem, and a front brake vibration/pulsation. no help on the pulsation problem since i was told i needed to turn the rotors again. on the vehicle stability control/traction control/anti-lock braking system/brake warning lights, the service associate offered that it was a "common" problem, could be caused by a loose gas cap or an expensive computer (in the thousands of dollars). he sated that no "codes" were set other than a "low voltage" which could be caused by a bad battery or corroded connection. i cleaned the battery terminals completely, checked the battery, and made sure the gas cap was tight. the warning lights now come on at some point every time i drive the sequoia. earnhardt toyota told me it should not affect the actual braking systems. how do they know that? being told of a false continuous or intermittent safety warning light can lull one into a questionable sense of safety. these lights and safety systems need to work reliably without having toyota just say they know about this common problem. does it affect actual vehicle stability control and emergency braking? on numerous internet sites, i find this same problem is mentioned frequently. also a large number of complaints are on file now with the nhtsa. i rely on the warning lights and their underlying systems to work as advertised, but toyota now makes me doubt that reliance. does there have to be a large "body count" for nhtsa to order a recall to fix this well known safety problem? *tr

Our vsc started acting up when we purchased the vehicle 2-1/2 years ago from carmax. after owning it for not more than 2 months the vsc lights and brake light would come on and stay on until we would turn the vehicle off. then the computer would reset itself. then our back passenger side wheel bearing went bad and we had toyota fix the wheel bearing problem. toyota stated that after they fixed the bearing the vsc computer wouldn't communicate with the wheel that was fixed. they knew the vsc computer went bad and told us they wouldn't fix it for free. it would cost $900.00 to fix the faulty vsc computer. we needed an inspection sticker and they passed the vehicle with all the vsc lights and red brake light on. this means that the vehicle is very unstable to drive. our son has leukemia so we haven't had the money to fix the issue and the vehicle needs an inspection sticker. the local inspection place in texas said that they will not pass this vehicle if the red brake light is on. toyota knows there is an issue with this vsc computer in this 2002 toyota sequoia. *tr

Gas pedal hesitates and won't pick up speed when applied. this causes me to have to pull over to the side of the road and slowly drive until the speed picks up. this almost cause an accident when i was trying to merge on to the interstate in heavy traffic. *tr

(1) the dashboard lights for abs, vsc, & traction control flickered, and then remained on permanently. (2) the abs and vsc have malfunctioned which seriously affects the braking & stability control of the vehicle in emergency handling situations, endangering person(s) in vehicle. (3) technician at marin toyota in san rafael, ca stated this was a common failure of the 2002 sequoia. (4) searching online forums and the nhtsa complaint database also show this a common problem. (5) our family needs to be safe in this car. i hope something can be done. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. while driving 45 mph, the vsc and trac lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact heard a loud noise coming from the front passenger side tire and the vehicle began pulling to the right. the dealer replaced a gasket that was covered in brake fluid. the vehicle was taken to the dealer three times for the same failure, with the most recent occurrence on october 1, 2007. the dealer stated that the skid control computer failed and would cost $2,500 to replace. the vin was unknown. the current mileage was 73,330 and failure mileage was 71,000.

I own a 2002 toyota sequoia 4x2. the vsc/trac lights came on after i had the battery replaced on dec. 20, 2006. my toyota specialist could not figure out what the problem was but said that the sequoia's seem to have multiple problems relating to brakes and computers. i took it to the dealer on jan. 8, 2007 and they said it has been a common/ongoing problem. toyota has not recalled this problem though. they could fix the ecc (electrical computer component) at the cost of $1,600. i said no thanks. *jb

During the past few months 'vsc trac" ,"vsc off","slip or skid","abs",lights is going off while driving at low speeds like making turns and trying to accelerate from stop, even though the pavement is dry this happens every time ever since, brakes automatically apply causing the car to cut off or prevent the car from accelerating thus results in not able to control the car, there were instances that making turns is very dangerous due to the fact that the vehicle behind you can hit you due to the fact that failure to accelerate when needed because the abs/vsc systems override you from accelerating by pressing the gas pedal, this seems to be a common complaint in online forums like edmunds.com tudrasolutions.com, and there was a discussion in there that someone's car with the vsc failure caught on fire, pls investigate. *nm

Trac off and vsc trac lights intermittently turn on, sometimes when vehicle is in motion and sometimes when vehicle is in idle. while in motion, if trac off and vsc trac lights turn on, beeping occurs, grinding or "whirring" noises are audible and brakes cannot be depressed. since the first incident, i've changed the rear differential oil and found small metal bits in the oil. *jb

Abs vsc trac control system lights come regularly. before lights come on, systems prevent acceleration for several seconds resulting in potentially dangerous inability to navigate the car. this continually happens. *jb

I have a 2002 toyota sequoia sr5 4x4 and my abs, brake, vcs, trac lights on my dashboard remain on. i have researched this problem on www.edmunds.com and on www.tundrasolutions.com and appears to a common problem for owners of 2000-2003 sequoia models. my 2002 has had several recalls that dealt with brakes and suspension. it appears that when the brake recall was conducted they did not upgrade other parts of the braking system including computer sensors/modules. i believe this is a safety related defect to these model years that should be covered by toyota. what i read on the above websites is that toyota has charged owners thousands of dollars to repair this defect when it should be a free repair. *nm

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact stated when accelerating at approximate speeds of 25-30 mph on wet pavement, around curves or when passing another vehicle, the vehicle was hesitant to increase speed. the vehicle would drive as normal when the contact removed his foot from the accelerator pedal. in addition, the vehicle stability control (vsc) and vsc traction warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the dealer reset the warning lights but to no avail. the dealer advised any further repairs would be at the owners expense. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 34,000 and the current mileage was 60,000

02/toyota/sequoia/sequoia lmt v8 vehicle accelleration/ toyota rep. inpected , yes a problem. *tr

2002 toyota sequoia has been operating since @ 62,000 miles with a non-functioning vsc/abs system. see that this has not yet been officially recalled, but can find all kinds of info and complaints on the web about this issue. dashboard lit up with all relative warning lights & vehicle has no abs nor vsc functionality. how could this important safety features well documented, chronic failure not be recalled? it is not exclusive to the 2002 model year either. this is very inappropriate. how many people have to die or get injured before this well documented safety equipment failure is responsibly addressed with a recall. i hope my complaint helps the tally towards this recall. consumers of this vehicle have bought it with a critical safety system that fails. toyota must be made to rectify this product safety and quality issue! *tr

I own a 2002 toyota sequoia, sr5, 4wd. i have the same safety issue that was fixed with the recall (4/28/2010) for the 2003 sequoia vsc system. i am afraid to pull out into traffic at stop signs on slippery roads. the vsc system reacts and the truck will not move because i cannot accelerate. at times i am in an intersection and the vehicle will not move. *tr

I have owned my sequoia for years and the approximate mileage is around 122,000 miles. i purchased it brand new and the first time i had an issue with the traction control was around 2005. i took it to the dealership and explained to them what happened. i was driving down the road and my speed was around 40 miles per hour. the weather was sunny and the roads were dry. i ran across a rough patch in the road and all of a sudden the wheels locked up, there was this awful screeching sound, and the steering became hard. it was like i had no control over the vehicle. next thing i knew, the skid traction control lights were on. after i turned the vehicle off and restarted it, it looks like it had reset itself. of course, the dealership could find nothing wrong. this has occurred again through the years and each time i take it in for service, i complain about the same problem. today i have it in for service again and mentioned it yet again. i asked if they could just disconnect the skid traction control because i have come close several times to losing control of the vehicle. the service manager explained to me they could not disconnect it. well, the way i figure it, toyota will wait until after someone is killed or badly injured and they are sued before they will do anything. i have contacted toyota america to no avail as well as the ntsb. *tr

I noted today the recall of 2003 toyota sequoia's due to issues with the vsc system. i am concerned that this does not include the 2002 models as i have had recurring issues with the vsc since day 1. at low speed, particularly on grades or while making sharp turns, the vsc will cause my vehicle to temporarily lose power. i have reported this on several occasion both to toyota and via telephone. it is so bad that i now know locations on my regular drives during which this will occur. so, i either go a little faster than i might otherwise on grades or i swerve out before making turns to make the angle less acute. obviously, not the safety we'd expect in a $40k vehicle. this issue also occurs going over slightly jarring bumps such as steep speedbumps or potholes. the vehicle temporarily loses power, which in this case can be possibly even more dangerous because we are often being followed by other vehicles traveling at normal speed. *tr

We own a 2002 toyota sequoia in which the vsc traction control lights have come on the dash along with the brake light and check engine light. the traction control has been unpredictable seemingly coming on and off in conditions when not necessarily needed. this has only been a problem within the last two/three months. have taken it in to the dealership three times now and the code from the check engine light says that its an 02 sensor. i have been reassured by the dealership service department that replacing the 02 sensor will also reset and extinguish the vsc trac and brake lights that come on. this has not been the case. the lights stay off until i get the vehicle almost home then all the lights come back on again, the traction control remains unpredictable. i have listened to the dealership long enough and have spent approximately $800.00 and still have the same problem. i have expressed my disbelief on how replacing 02 sensor ( twice now) can fix a problem with the vsc traction control but they have informed me that it takes care of it. it obviously hasn't. they now want me to bring the vehicle back in. after researching this problem online this seems to be a common and potentially dangerous problem with the 2002-2004 sequoia's. the problem being with the vsc traction control. i am sure that if i bring it back now they will tell me that it needs a new traction control computer to the tune of $1700-$2400 and from reading what others have experienced this does not fix the problem. no one has been able to really find the source of the problem and how to fix it. i am normally not a complainer as i realize all mechanical parts wear out. however when researching this problem i was shocked to find the number of sequoia owners who were able to describe in detail the exact same problem i am having. i feel that this is a big enough defect to require a recall. *tr
