We have classified the 130 complaints from 2002 Toyota Sequoia about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
Driving at 75mph and inexplicably lost vehicle speed. engine was running but would not respond to foot feed, i.e. press down on accelerator and little to no increase in rpms from idle. dealer replaced throttle position sensor. *tr
While driving the vehicle, an alarm started going off and skid control light on dash was flashing and then motor lost rpm, the vehicle shook as if all the tire where flat, this happened for about 30 seconds, while i tried to get out of traffic and off the road, then the vsc lights came on in the dash, then the vehicle smoothed out and ran normal! after looking at all the forum online for this problem, it apparently is a huge problem with these vehicles and after calling toyota about this they claim that this problem does not exist, as all the forum we read said that toyota would not except responsibility for this safety problem! therefor we filed a case to toyota, hoping they could help us out! because this happens on the road it is hard to have it identified by a mechanic and a computer! we cannot with this economy in anyway afford the extreme high price of toyotas service work , i feel my family could be in great danger! *tr
My wife and i were on the way south i-405 from work to go to the church. i made exit at fairview, and then left on baker street. i felt the steering wheel was very heavy and uncontrollable. the car crashed. there was no other car involved. my breast and head are in pain right now. *tr
Traveling home at normal speed the vsc/trac lights came on and the vehicle began vibrating and making a grinding noise. after stopping on the side of the road, i turned the vehicle off and on to possibly reset the vsc/trac. it seemed to work briefly but it started to do it again. we attempted to take the vehicle to the store and the problem started again. we noted audible alerts and the vsc/trac lights illuminating, grinding from what seemed to be the passenger side front tire. he had to pull off to the side of the road; however, found it difficult to control the vehicle. the speed was estimated at 35-40 mph, dry conditions with no obvious road conditions or issues. this problem had been noted several time randomly over the past two years, but has seemingly been resolved by turning the vehicle off and back on. this was the first time that the issue has persisted, and the increased difficulty in steering. *tr
While traveling home at normal speed the vsc/trac lights came on and the vehicle began vibrating and making a grinding noise. after stopping on the side of the road, i called my husband and was told to turn the vehicle off and on to possibly reset the vsc/trac. it seemed to work briefly but it started to do it again. after making it home, my husband drove the vehicle initially without any issues. however, he attempted to take the vehicle to the store and the problem started again. he noted audible alerts and the vsc/trac lights illuminating, grinding from what seemed to be the passenger side front tire. he had to pull off to the side of the road; however, found it difficult to control the vehicle. the speed was estimated at 35-40 mph, dry conditions with no obvious road conditions or issues. smoke was observed coming from the passenger front of the vehicle. this problem had been noted several time randomly over the past two years, but has seemingly been resolved by turning the vehicle off and back on. this was the first time that the issue has persisted, and the increased difficulty in steering. *tr
My 2002 sequoia was going 68mph when, for no reason, the vsc (veh.stability control) indicator lite began flashing.the truck pulled left, the brakes seemed to be applying unevenly, and there was a grinding noise.i nearly had an accident and pulled over. shut engine off for 5 minutes, restarted, and truck drove normal (vsc lite was out).did same thing the next day at 55mph. my research showed that 2003 sequoias did the same thing, and atoyota recall of 2003 models(50,000) were fixed by toyota. i spoke to[xxx] of toyota customer experience center, who refused to help me.why is my truck treated any different than the 2003 model doing the same thing !!?? is my safety not important too? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Again, after picking the vehicle up from the toyota service department in which the skid control ecu and brake booster assembly was replaced, the vehicle repeated all alarms and malfunctions as before: slippery lamp illuminated, alarm sounded, vsc trac and trac off lamp lit while abs brakes engaged while driving on a slight decline at 45 mph. i returned the vehicle to toyota immediately! the technicians informed me on the following monday that the seal for the master cylinder was cracked after replacing the brake booster assy. surprisingly, it has happened again and i am taking it back to the service department tomorrow morning. there has to be a systemic problem as this problem is a known issue with this type of vehicle. it is disappointing that toyota would keep these vehicles on the road with know problems of the such. fortunately for me, there hasn't been any accidents. i fear for the safety myself and my coworker as we commute in the vehicle daily. more importantly, that of my wife and children when we drive the vehicle. *tr
While driving at 50 mph on a flat concrete paved road in dry conditions, the slippery wet lamp lit and the alarm sounded for approximately 10 seconds while the abs brakes engaged on. the lamp flashed until the brakes released and the vsc trac and trac off lamps illuminated and remained on after restarting the vehicle. this occurrence happened immediately after receiving the vehicle from the toyota service department in which the skid control ecu was replaced for $770.79. this is a repeated occurrence of the problems. i delivered the vehicle back to toyota to have it repaired. the technician informed me that the brake booster assembly would need to be replaced to resolve the problem. the maintenance cost $1,606.24 and they kept if for 5 days. *tr
I was a stop light with the brakes firmly pressed down when the vehicle lurched forward. it felt as if someone had rear-ended me, however, there was no one behind me. now the vsc lights are lit up on the dashboard display and it is lurching and power surging at random. *tr
During my evening commute while driving on i-20 west at 75 mph, the steering wheel tugged and the front brake engaged. immediately afterwards, the slippery wet lamp flashed and an alarm buzzer sounded for about 10 seconds. afterwards, the vsc trac and traf off lights illuminated and remained on. i drove to an orientation and while on the way home at 45 mph, all of the previously stated alarms and malfunctions occurred again and the brakes engaged with a loud noise. i stop for gas at my usual 1/4 tank level and while pulling away from the fuel station, all alarms and all malfunctions recurred for the third time within a 24 hour period. the abs engaged while driving at 10 mph. i called the toyota service department and coordinated to leave my vehicle in the night deposit box for maintenance the next morning. toyota kept the vehicle for two days and replaced the skid control ecu anticipating that the problem would be resolved. previously, i had the brake fluid flushed and replaced on 08/17/2012 as routine maintenance at 262,223 miles. the problem recurred within days. *tr
The vsc trac and vsc off lights are on and won't go off. *tr
It seems electronic control system thinks vehicle is out of control when it is not. vsc activates in random conditions at random times at speeds between 30-65 mph. vehicle experiences lose of power, pulling to one side and inadequate braking. vehicle becomes unsafe to drive and is dangerous! a recall on the vsc system & components for this vehicle is in order. *tr
When driving at highway speed, in dry conditions, the vehicle skid control (vsc) and traction control system (trac) warning lights suddenly began flashing and beeping. the steering wheel began difficult to control and a loud grinding noise came from the brake pedal as the abs system was activated. this made for a very dangerous situation as the vehicle was very difficult to control in heavy traffic! after about five seconds, the grinding/abs activation and warning beeps stopped, but the warning lights stayed illuminated. when taking the next highway offramp and applying the brakes, the warning lights and grinding started again and this time it almost caused an accident when the braking was overridden by the abs! only after turning the car off and restarting did the warning lights turn off. the 2003 sequoia was recalled for this same problem. the 2002 sequoia should also be recalled. does there have to be accidents and fatalities before this will happen?? toyota needs to take responsibility for this dangerous defect. *tr
Driving on dry road and vsc engages. can not use brakes. continues to do this for a few minutes then stop, then engage again. happened in oct. 2011 had a steering sensor replaced advised by toyota and it is doing it again. this is very unsafe because i had no control of vehicle while this is engaged. i was going maybe 10 mph when it happened. no warning just engages. *tr
The vsc lights come on when driving, the rear differential seal was completely rusted through and should be on a recall, the frame was on recall and replaced in 2014, but the rear seals were rusted thru and toyota after costing me thousands does not want to cover rear seals why ? right after the frame was replaced and the toyota dealer in deerfield beach, fl said the rear differential is also way rusted out and may blow the seals, well they did during a oil change and check. if toyota knew of the extreme rust on the frame that it was also on the rear differential as confirmed by 3 different mechanics one being toyota. toyota wants me to pay $2,000.00 to fix which is outrageous. *tr
Was driving on the interstate in the left hand lane. tried to merge into the right hand lane and noticed a car in my blind spot so i went back into the left lane. however, my vsc/abs lights went on, the car beeped, made a heavy grinding noise, and then, with much force, veered hard to the right. i tried to steer it back to the left hand lane, the other drivers saw me wrestling with my steering wheel and the car started to fishtail so fortunately they stayed well behind me. the car became impossible to control and steer and braking did not help. despite my best efforts to control the car, apply the brakes, steer out of the skidding and fishtailing, my car then went over into the right lane, over to the shoulder, and then the wheel sunk into the grass next to the shoulder where the vehicle rolled over several times. my son and i were airlifted to the trauma unit. i suffered 2 broken vertebrae in the c area of my neck and a compressed disc in the t region of my spine, concussion, cuts, bruises, glass embedded near my eye, as well as a splenic aneurysm. my son had a concussion, wound on the head that required stitches, cuts, bruises and a sprained ankle. my son and i were both unconscious at the accident scene.my two daughters had minor cuts, sprains, and bruises. we were fortunate to have come out of this alive and not to have hit anyone else. i am still in a neck brace and undergoing medical treatment. toyota needs to recall this model as soon as possible. we could have all been killed. unfortunately, my car was totaled and there was no black box in this model. i will never buy a car from toyota again. however, for the safety of others, i do hope they recall this model as i would hate for others to suffer what we had to suffer, or worse. *tr updated 10/19/12 *cn updated 10/23/2012 *js
While driving during normal dry conditions, vsc alarm started to go off followed by loss of control of brakes. was able to pull over without incident and at about 10 mph the alarm shutoff and the amber trac off light and vsc trac light annunciated and all driving conditions were normal again. i'm guessing at this point the system was disabled in the trac off mode. i'm in the process of bringing the car to the dealer for a diagnostic however i've read numerous items online of people having this problem and toyota doesn't seem to help (recall). it is quite expensive also. *tr
was accelerating onto the freeway today and it felt as if the left brakes came on along with a screeching sound and it made me swerve left. i was able to avoid swerving into merging traffic but i nearly crashed. over the last week the vsc off lights have started going on and off and after reviewing some literature on line it seems that hundreds of others have had the same type of problem. the 2003 sequoia was actually recalled for this same thing. very dangerous and now i will have to contact the dealer to see about it getting fixed before someone is killed. i have two young children and this really pisses me off. even if there is not a recall i should have been made aware of the danger i was putting myself in. i have been happy with my truck for 8 years but after this incident and seeing what others have gone through i will never buy another toyota!!! *tr

Vsc light, trac off light and check engine light all came on at the same time. i took vehicle to autozone and they checked the computer with the result error 5 cylinder misfire, for the check engine light, the other 2 warning lights they could not give me any advice on. *tr
Driving at 60 mph the vsc lights came on and the vehicle went to the right by itself.i slow down, and then the skid traction lights came on and a loud noise was coming out of the front....i think that if i was driving faster i could of have an accident...the same thing happened yesterday... *tr
While on the highway, suddenly there was a loud grinding noise in the front end of the car, the car lost all power, and the vsc alarm went off and the vsc dashboasd lights were flashing. this lasted for about 30 seconds and then stopped. this has happened again and again at all different speeds and now the vsc lights are on all the time and the grinding happens intermittenly. *tr
In stop and go traffic at launch vehicle abs engaged without warning repeatedly with loud grinding noises and the abs light, traction light and vehicle stability control light all came up. stopped vehicle, turned off engine, waited a few minutes and all lights were gone upon restart. however this problem worsened considerably and more often through the october and november 2011 months, to the point of occurring every time the vehicle is driven as the date of this writing, december 3rd 2011. new worsened symptoms now include flashing vsc (vehicle stability control) at launch from a stop, which cuts engine power and compromises accurate steering. sometimes the abs, trac and vsc lights come up immediately, sometimes only after repeated intrusive activations of abs/trac/vsc. all these warning lights also stayed on once for two entire days after leaving the vehicle rest overnight. all these dangerous random interventions of the abs/trac/vsc electronics started after the front rotors and pads were changed by a professional mechanic (a1-unity body, 1420 howe st in vancouver, bc, canada). the vehicle was federally and provincially inspected for canadian importation by the same mechanic before these problems started to happen. it was deemed to be in exceptional mechanical and working condition for its age and mileage. however the vehicle is now longer safe to drive because of this abs/trac/vsc defect, despite it being otherwise perfectly drivable. toyota must issue the same recalls that they posted for defective trac and vsc for the 2003 year sequoia models for the 2002 sequoia models. sequoia vehicles haven't received any hardware or software updates as far as abs/trac/vsc systems are concerned between 2001 and 2003, proof being that subsequent model years from 2001 all experience the same defects for the same reasons. 2001-2002 sequoia vsc recalls need to be issued now! *tr
The vsc/trac activation and system warning lights came on while the system intermittently activated, locking up/letting go of the right rear tire while on dry level pavement and driving forward. i took it to a shop, which found a problem in a steering sensor, "the computer" and possibly a wheel sensor. they suggested that the system be disabled until it could be troubleshoot in more detail. i had them disable it so that it could be driven without the danger of a wheel locking up on the highway. it is still disabled, with dash system warning lights on during operation. *tr
The vehicle is a toyota sequoia 2002 2 wheel drive, and i have had three incidents so far. the first time was driving in the high way at a steady speed of 65 mph when the car all of the sudden jerked to the left and a beeping went off and the track off and vsc track came on. the problem is that there is no warning at all and it just happen in a matter of seconds. my concern is that i use this vehicle just when my family is with me. i wonder if accidents with fatalities need to occur before somebody do something about it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that while driving 80 mph, the vsc traction light illuminated on the instrument panel and the wheel jerked to the left. the vehicle was taken to a repair shop for inspection where they stated that the yaw rate sensor needed to be replaced. the contact notified the manufacturer who stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 10v176000 (traction control system). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 115,000.
I was driving down the highway and out of no where i started skidding and my steering wheel started shaking. there was nothing on the road, the weather was hot and dry, and i wasn't switching lanes. simultaneously the "vsc trac" and "trac off" lights came on. my first instinct was to apply the brake, and upon doing so the abs kicked in. i pulled off the highway to let the car rest and so that i could check everything out. everything appeared fine, so i continued on my journey. the lights stayed on for the remainder of the 50 mile trip, but no further incident occurred. when i started the car the next morning, the lights were off. i took the car to the dealership and they told me i had an ecu skid control failure. upon further investigation i found that this had happened at least four times prior with this vehicle, starting when the car was only two years old and had approximately 35,000 miles. all four times the car had been taken to the dealership for inspection. *tr
Anti-lock braking system engages suddenly with power loss and front end vibration. vehicle stability control and traction control lights illuminate on dash. abs and vsc lights remain on (abs and stability control therefore disengaged) and cannot be turned back on by operator. when vehicle is turned off, system appears to reset, but the problem repeats after restarting and driving several miles. problem occurred twice today, on two separate drive events within a 2 hour period. *tr
i have experienced chilling and dangerous malfunctions of the abs, vsc/track system in my (owned since new) 2002 sequoia. the "vsc/vsc track" lights illuminate and a disconnect alarm (beeping tone) is initiated. the system failure pulls the car abruptly off course. immediate correction must be made to stay on the road. this has happened several times within the past 6 months with the system automatically re-setting itself after turning off the key and re-starting the engine. today's incident was the most violent and the system does not re-set. probably a good thing. looking at user complaints on the internet causes one to wonder why the public has not been protected by the nhtsa requiring a recall. my experience has been toyota dealerships are turning their backs on this issue. for safety sake, this should not be ignored!! i find it hard to believe that we can spend time and money to preserve a salamander in this country and yet ignore a highway safety issue such as this. the complaints on this issue have been many and around for a while. so many of us out here are reaching out to you for help. please help by considering a recall on these vehicles. very truly yours,...an experienced auto mechanic, licensed and experienced (a&p) aircraft mechanic, gulfstream 550 safety & standards pilot. *tr
Un safe 2002 sequoia vsc trac, vsc off having some problem with your sequoia vsc trac sensor lights turning on and off and hearing grinding noise when it auto-engage and disengage, this is a common problem that many sequoia owners have experience. light came on while driving on hard and flat road and lose power almost got struck by a vehicle driving behind me unsafe. *tr
Vsc/trac lights are on, engine light is on. toyota dealer tells me this is a common problem with 2002 toyota sequoia but there's no recall. the internet is filled with toyota sequoia owners, 2003 model, dealing with repeated fixes for the vsc/trac lights and engine lights that come on after 111,000 miles. *tr
My 2002 toyota sequoia has a defective sensor for the vsc, brake system. i see where the 2003 sequoia is covered, but not the 2002's. please tell me why this is the case, when the same problem is occurring. *tr
We have been experiencing an issue w/ the vehicle skid control light keeps going on and off. at one point, we lost power to car, while trying to accelerate. toyota dealership is unsure what the issue is. this has been going on for over a year. i found a recall related to vsc for 2003 sequoias but toyota says our sequoia is not included in this recall even though the symptoms are very identical!! instead the local dealership wants to try to replace some computer chip (that would cost us thousands of dollars) but they are not guaranteeing that this is even the cause or will resolve the issue!!! they are saying it can be this computer or it can be that computer .. and replacing each is worth a few 1000s but they don't know which is causing the vsc light to go on and off!! *tr
Problem began in 2009 when the vsc locked up on my husband while on the freeway. this incident was reported to you and a complaint filed. when vehicle was taken to toyota of escondido, we were told it checked out fine. the light continued to come on an off..taken in again, they pulled the computer system and found it registered the car had a total rollover..so not the case! toyota had no answer, saying maybe computer malfunction..they did nothing! over the year the light has come on and off randomly, when taken in for scheduled maintenance, we have been told it "checks out fine". on 12/22/2010 i was pulling out of a parking spot and noticed a feeling of total tightness over the vehicle. the vsc light was on. when put in drive (i had been in reverse) the car was fine and the feeling gone..light as well. one hour later, i was at a stoplight in heavy holiday traffic. as the line began to slowly mover forward, i lightly touched the gas..immediately the car was overcome with the tight feeling and lights came on and a deep grinding noise started. i had no control of the vehicle. i was pushing forward and could not steer..i looked down thinking i was on the gas..my foot was 100% on the brake..all the way down and the car was pushing forward! i looked up and watched as my huge sequoia crumpled up into my windshield..then the car shut down. the car in front of my had little (popping noise in trunk) to no damage! airbags never ejected. towed and incoperable at the time. currently being investigated for damage by insurance and toyota. *tr
I have owned a 2002 toyota sequoia since 2006. this problem began occurring in the winter of 2007 with the vsc, vsc trac, and abs warning lights all coming on. this kept continuing anytime i was driving in wet snowy conditions. i began to research this problem on line and it seems there are many cases of this on 2001-2003 toyota sequoias. i took it to a dealer and they couldn't find any computer codes relating to this issue. at the end of last winter the problem seemed to become worse. even in dry conditions on dry pavement the vsc computer begins to take over acceleration and very often! and sometimes the lights come on and sometimes not. again i researched and found there to be a toyota recall on 2003 sequoias only for the same problem that has been affecting my sequoia! i called toyota, they gave me a case # and told me to take it in to the dealer. i took it back to a toyota dealer and again they could not duplicate the lights turning on or find any computer codes concerning the problem. that was approximately 5 months ago and still the problem persists leading up to yesterdays accident. i drove up to the mountains to go snowboarding. when we left the resort it was snowing very heavy. i noticed the abs, vsc, and vsc trac lights come on again, as i was expecting them to. we drove about 7 miles down the road then i was moving in to the left turning lane of a traffic light. our speed was only 15-20 mph, and when i tried to slow down the wheels locked up and we began sliding. i let off the brakes and tried them again to no avail. i let off the brakes and tried to miss the vehicle in front of me by going to the left side of them over a small median as there was no traffic coming towards us in the intersection. but my rear tire bounced me off the median and into the vehicle.the damage was minor and there were no injuries. i believe this accident could have been avoided if the abs and vsc system was working properly. i believe the recall should include 01 and 02 sequoias. *tr
I have a 2002 toyota sequoia and recently my vsc has been was feels like a lock up, i hear something grinding and the car begins to shake and swerve, it happened as i was entering the interstate. i have had issues with the vsc light going on and off and did mention to the service dept. at the dealership when it was under warranty, they said they could not find anything wrong. it has been a few years since the problem has occurred and now it is worse and a very scary and dangerous situation. i had my daughter and a her friend in the car and we were nowhere near a town. i am very scared to drive my car. it now happens almost everytime i go somewhere, and the dealership wants to charge me just to evaluate the problem when i had previously mentioned it before. i hope there is a recall very soon. *tr
Vsc/abs/skid light comes on intermittently, at differing speeds, at random intervals, accompanied by grinding noise and braking action. during some of these random occurrences, especially when driving at highway speeds, the action can pull the car quickly and forcefully to the right and on a few occasions this has almost resulted in loss of control. i read on edmunds.com and other sites (including http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/1gen-sequoia/76829-file-complaint-nhtsa-regarding-vsc-abs/) that this is a well-known, and well documented problem! why haven't you mandated a recall for this dangerous situation????!!! i'm concerned that my wife may be driving down the interstate and the problem will suddenly and violently pull the car to the right, and she will hit another car or lose control and crash. how many crashes, injuries, and, heaven forbid, deaths, will have to happen before you act? *tr
This is a repeat occurrence of a problem with the vsc trac and trac off systems. repeatedly, the lights will come on and remains on until the vehicle is restarted. again, when i took it the toyota service department, i was informed that they were unable to replicate the codes. no resolution. *tr
I have been having the same problem with my 02' sequoia. at first the vsc trac light/ vsc off would come on & go off after turning engine off. then it started staying on along w/ abs light & brake. all the lights continue to stay on. my vehicle only has 126,800 miles which i consider less to be having an issue at this time. i'm a mother of three in which this is my primary vehicle that carries my precious cargo. i really do think that toyota should issue some kind of recall in regards to this matter, it clearly looks likes this is a problem w/ other sequoia owners & they need to stand behind there products. especially when it involves the safety of lives. it would be great if someone could help me w/ this matter. *tr
To start, i want to stress that i do not understand why there is no recall for this problem. the vsc trac, abs, skid control and brake lights all came on and stayed on as of the above date. prior to that date, the vsc trac and skid lights would come on for no reason, but would go off upon turning off and restarting the car. when the lights came on and stayed on, i read the owner's manual and based on that information, was worried the brakes would not work, so i called the dealer. when i spoke to someone in the dealer's repair shop about the problem before i brought the car in, he said that the warning lights meant that my abs system was gone and it would cost $2,000 to fix. he said that it was not covered by warranty or a recall. so, i took it to the nearest auto repair shop to my home, that i had used previously. they checked the warning lights with the computer diagnostic and could not find anything wrong. then, i took it to the dealer, and they checked the warning lights and said that the problem was low voltage with the battery. i had recently bought a new battery, so i took the car back to the first place, which checked the battery and said it was fine. so i received conflicting messages from the dealer. however, since other owners with my year/model toyota have had safety problems with the same issue and toyota has the same problem with the 2003 model and they have issued a recall, i believe it is a safety issue. i can't understand why no recall has been issued for the 2002 year. please look at all of the complaints about this exact issue from so many consumers (and i'm sure plenty of others who did not take the time to report it) and act before someone is seriously injured or killed!!!!!! *tr
Since end of june 2010, i had to have my 2002 toyota sequoia towed because it had started to veer off and the wheel became stiff and i couldn't control the steering. the vsc lights came on as well as the "squiggly car" light. i was scared to drive it again as i was 100 miles away from home, so i had it towed. i had taken it to the toyota dealership and they diagnosed the bearings but couldn't diagnose the failure i had felt as far as the vsc incident. they charged me for inspection but said they didn't know exactly what was wrong and sent me home with the car. i experienced this for a few days and finally took it to an independent auto repair. they did a zero recalibrating and saw there was issues on the computer coming up but couldn't also exactly pinpoint what was wrong. it took a week before i got it back as it didn't reoccur with them. the following day as i drove it, the vsc lights and squiggly car light came on again. every time i made a turn it seemed it jumped and it wouldn't gain acceleration quickly when i pressed on the gas. plus it made this loud noise as if something was rubbing and it would slow down , then after a few seconds, regain speed. i took it in again and they replaced the yaw sensor. the following day, again taking the streets it seemed that everytime i stopped and pressed again it shifted something as i felt it under the pedals, the vsc lights would turn on but then turn off and then finally regain speed. each and every time i was stopped at a light and then pressed on the gas, it did this. i finally looked up a recall that one technician told me about and noticed the 2003 recall for traction control system. however toyota will not help since my car is 2002, hence why i'm complaining about it now. i believe the exact thing is what is happening to my car. i've had it swerve on the freeway when the vsc light came on and am afraid to drive it on the freeway for fear of it slowing down unexpectedly. *tr
2002 toyota sequoia vsc/ traction control system started to malfunction in june 2011 vehicle has 128,000 miles. took it to the dealership and they said that it needs a new yaw rate sensor @800.00dollars. also that there is a chance that this doesn't fix the problem the suv may need an ecu at a cost of an additional 900.00. that's crazy!!!! this has happened at all different range of speeds. happening more often lately and seems very dangerous when activates and makes the vehicle unstable. *tr
While driving through parking lot and applying brakes, the vsc trac and trac off lights came on and remained on while the vehicle was on. after restarting the vehicle, the lights would not replicate. when taken to the dealer, the technician informed me to bring it in when the lights were on because they were unable to pull the codes. *tr
While driving my 2002 toyota sequoia, i pulled into traffic and all of a sudden the truck lost power as cars swerved around me and a violent grinding noise started. a skid control light started flashing. i could feel the grinding on the brake pedal. after a few seconds, the truck beeped and 2 more lights came on. the "trac off" and "vsc" came on. after that the truck drove normal. the next time it happened that day was while i pressed on the brake pedal as i was trying to make a right turn into a gas station. this has happened multiple times now! i no longer feel safe on the road as this seems to happen at any moment. i have read all about this problem on the internet. many sequoia owners have had these same problems. why will toyota not fix these problems??? what has to happen for them to feel responsible?? *tr
Trac light/vsc lights came on while driving down the road. then the car pulled to the right and a grinding noise sounding like the anti-locking brake mechanism is activating. this is an extremely dangerous malfunction. i've seen that the 2003 model has a recall out for the same thing, and after seeing many others having this same occurrence with the 2002 model, they should expand the date range to cover the 2002 as well! it happened twice this weekend and it's happened 4-5 times previous to this recent incident (one earlier incident had my stepdaughter driving the sequoia and the power shut completely off while driving!). the mechanics told us they couldn't pull any related codes the first time we took it in. we need to take this in again immediately, but why should i have to pay the full price when this is obviously a defective part they've created? i was traveling at 70 mph on interstate-10 the first time it happened this past weekend and in-town at a slower speed (40 mph) the second incident. luckily nobody was in the lane next to me or i'd have hit them for sure! *tr
We've experienced a lack of acceleration on our 2002 toyota sequoia, dealer has not found the problem. on saturday may 6th at approx. 11:30 pm, as we exited the freeway with wife and eight year old triplets, the vehicle basically died out. the engine was still on but vehicle would not move when pressing the accelerator. i let the vehicle roll and pulled over where it was safe. a recent announcement refers to a recall of sequoias with this problem but only for the 2003 model. i've read various posts about owners of other models having the same issue so i believe this problems is more widespread than what toyota is admitting at this point. what action can i take at this time as my wife no longer feels safe driving the vehicle at this time. the repairs will i imagine be very costly if i have to pay out of pocket. *tr
Hello, i'm in the military and my wife and kids were driving in our 2002 sequoia 4x4, she called me at work crying and said that her and the kids had almost hit a 18 wheeler head on. she said she was going around a turn and the truck jerked her into on coming traffic, she applied the brakes hard, and pulled the truck back into flow of traffic. she pulled off the road and i had it towed home. after further research, there are hundreds of complaints on the internet for this same exact issue. almost verbatim of my same issue. after that the vsc, or vehicle skid control light flashes, and it causes my truck to brake one wheel at a time. it also will not allow us to accelerate. i took it to the dealer yesterday and they called me and told me the ecu was bad and that this was a known problem for this model and year of truck, which is visible on the internet. little did i know that the part is $650 dollars, and the labor is close to $250. could you please assist, i getting ready to deploy to iraq again. i need to know my family is well taken care of while i'm gone. can you please provide me assistance with this issue? my question is, if there is so many issues with the same problem, why hasn't there been a recall. reminds me of toyota's gas pedal issues. this is just as bad when it comes down to it. something needs to be done asap. once again, please provide me assistance. About a year ago, i started to experience problems that's related to the vehicle stability control (vsc) system on my 2002 toyota sequoia. the problem occurs intermittently and when it does occurs, it happens during initial acceleration. during this time, the vsc light would start blinking and i would not be able to accelerate. braking would require tremendous force applied to activate it. there was at least one incident where the vsc activated during highway driving, but that incident lasted approximately 5 or so seconds. however, it did require that i suddenly apply the brake and started pumping it for the vsc to de-activate. due to the intermittent nature, i took the vehicle to a local repair shop for diagnostic and they did find that error codes were present relating to the vsc. though the problem could not be pinpointed on the initial visit to the repair shop. subsequent occurrences prompted me to bring the vehicle back to the repair shop for further diagnostic. eventually it was recommended to me to replace the "speed sensors" which i authorized. after the replacement, the problem tend to have gone away. recently, i started to intermittently experience a similar problem with vsc light blinking briefly whenever i pull out of a drive way performing at least an 80 degree turn. this time around the problem isn't as severe and is very infrequent. i would say in a week of commuting, i would experience it maybe once or twice. of course this is compared to previous incidents where i was experiencing the vsc problem almost half the time. earlier this week, i read there was a 2003 toyota sequoia recall which has the exact symptom and problem i've been experiencing on my 2002 sequoia. i strongly urge the nhtsa to recommend toyota to include the recall for 2002 sequoia model year as well. thank you for your attention and time! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. while driving at speeds of 5 mph and making a left turn, the front tires slipped and the vehicle decelerated for approximately four seconds. the dealer was able to duplicate the failure but was unable to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired and there were no recalls. the failure mileage was 107,000 and the current mileage was 108,000.
2002 toyota sequoia abs and vehicle skid control (vsc) computer failure that causes safety concern in operating the vehicle (abs, vsc, parking brake lights stay on). in slippery road conditions, applying brakes or accelerating causes the vehicle to skid and slide easily. 2003 models have been recalled for similar issue with abs and vsc computer. please look into poor toyota's design or production quality of these vehicles before we get injured or worse... *tr
