Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Warning lights on the dash board come on periodically for no apparent reason. i maintain the car properly with regular oil changes and manufacturer recommended service. they go off on their own. my mechanic has no idea what causes this. it happens standing still, in motion or just by starting the vehicle.

Vsc trac, vsc off, trac, emergency brake & abs lights are all illuminated. seems like every sequoia 2001 - 2005 has this problem. after lots of research it seems like it's a fault with the vsc computer and ecu computer which dealers want $2000 and up! these malfunctions in computers affect the vehicles abs brakes, and stability control system which poses a threat to safety of driver and passengers. *tr

My vsc trac, vsc off, brake, & abs lights won't turn off. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the traction light illuminated as the front passenger tire seized. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated that the abs, logic, and control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 177,000.

The vsc trac lights have came on and will not go off. *tr

Wife was pulling off from a stoplight when the traction control system light (skidding car icon) and warning buzzer came on and the vehicle started making a loud grinding sound, vibrating, and pulling to the right. she pulled the vehicle over, turned it off, and called me to come swap vehicles with her. when i started the car, of course, the symptoms had gone away. several days later on a family trip, i was driving the vehicle on the interstate at 65-70 mph when the vehicle did the same thing she had described. we pulled over, the noise stopped, and then the vsc/trac and trac off came on. this should be a recall fix. too many vehicles have had this problem, over several production years (2003's actually have a recall for a similar issue). however, reading various forums has made me think toyota doesn't even know the root cause of this. but it's definitely a safety issue that needs to be checked out. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that the vehicle stability control and track warning lights illuminated. the contact lost control of the vehicle as the steering wheel haphazardly pulled to the right. the failure was experienced several times and even when the vehicle engine was turned off. the vehicle would reset independently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was advised that without the lights illuminated when the diagnostic was performed then the vehicle could not be diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 125,000 and the current mileage was 126,000.

The sequoia vsc trac, vsc off sensor lights turning on and off and hearing grinding noise, and lose power. and the roll over system light come on. *tr

Vsc/trac control system engaged while driving on smooth dry road at 70 mph. vehicle began to lurch and brake, had to guide to side of road. extremely dangerous. turned vehicle off, restarted, vsc off light and check engine light were on. has happened multiple times since, with toyota indicating that vsc computer needs to be replaced for $1200+. *tt

when traveling at any speed the two warning lights concerning the trac control on the the dash comes on and beeps several times, the vehicle suddenly brakes and pulls hard to the right temporarily losing control. all this happens in a split second with no warning. i am very concerned with my safety along with my families and others on the road concerning this safety defect.

Toyota loses power w/o warning. vsc/trac lights on...as well as abs and check engine. very dangerous...after researching, looks like it's super common. *tr

We bought our 2001 toyota sequoia in july 2009. while driving home from the used car lot the "vsc trace" and the "vsc off" lights came on and have never gone back off. the car lot said that the vehicle was "as is" and we had to deal with it. after having the vehicle for a month, the "cruise control" light started coming on, blinking at times, then it would turn off for a week or so, then it would come on steady and blink at times for days straight. one day while driving the "brake" light, "vsc trac" light, "vsc off" light, the "door ajar" light, and the "cruise" light all came on and blinked rapidly while driving. after pulling over and turning off the car and back on, they were still blinking. i turned it off and on many times and they all continued to blink. after getting home and letting it sit over night, they didn't come back on. currently the "vsc trac" and the "vsc off" light are still on. the "cruise control light is also on. after turning off the vehicle and removing the keys the "key" light stays on, blinking non-stop and the running lights stay on. sometimes i can restart the car and the running lights will stay off after removing the keys and locking the doors. i couldn't get them off last weekend and tried everything, finally the battery died, after i got a jump start, they turned off. we continuously have problems with the dash board indicator lights and the running lights staying on tw*

With no prior warning symptoms, the "vsc trac" "vsc off" brake" and abs" light come on in my 2001 toyota sequoia. it started about 2 weeks ago just once in a while, but now it happens almost every time i put the car in motion. it seemed to me at first that it happened most frequently when the weather is cold (the high 30s is about as cold as it ever gets here, though.) this is a problem that has been reported by many others. see here: http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/1gen-sequoia/62954-vsc-trac-vsc-off-brake-abs-2/. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 toyota sequoia. while driving 65 mph there was a loud thump in the right front passenger side wheel area, automatically the right front brake was applied . the vsc off and traction lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact depressed the brake pedal and released it, which allowed the front passenger side brake to release and the vehicle to drive normally again. four days prior to the failure, the contact noticed that the vsc off and traction lights would illuminate while driving, but then dim after the vehicle was restarted. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they disabled the vsc sensor to prevent the failure from recurring. the current mileage was 47,000 and failure mileage was 44,700. updated 09/10/08. *lj updated 09/12/08. *jb jun 10, 2008, while traveling at approximately 65 mph there was a loud "thump" in the right front passenger side wheel area, automatically the right front brake was applied, the vehicle veered to the right, the vsc off and the vsc traction light illuminated as well as a momentary indication of the vehicle swerve indicator came on, i applied the brakes to regain control of the vehicle, slowed and pulled to the side of the road to investigate the problem. a visual inspection indicated no apparent problem. i started the vehicle and noticed the vsc. off and the vsc traction indicators remained illuminated, the vehicle appeared to handle normally at speed so i continued on my trip from virginia beach, va. to denver, co. i could not turn the illuminated lights off with the manual switch. once i arrived in denver, i took the vehicle to mountain states toyota where the yaw rate sensor was unplugged. the problem has not been repaired and the sensor remains unplugged

We were driving down the hill and the traction control system went crazy we skidded out and then the abs and traction control/slip lights went on. they stayed on until we took it to the dealer and they replace some brake sensors that were corroded. on the way home it happened again. the traction control computer was reporting that there were still bad sensors, but the sensors were fine, so they replaced the entire traction control computer. after a week in the shop it finally came back working. a traction control system should not throw your car out of control and run you off the road. the dealer said that they had not seen so much corrosion under a vehicle before. they said that the frame, exhaust, spare tire, and brake components as well as various other electrical components looked to have what they would call excessive corrosion. they said i should take it up with whom i bought it from. i think this is the same problem as the tundras are having with corrosion and should be looped into the same investigation. the sequoia, i was told when i bought it, was designed on the same frame, and drive train as the tundra which would explain why the corrosion is effecting similar braking systems and the spare. i would love for someone to investigate this. i would have hated for anything to happen to my family which was in the car with me. *tr

Brake, abs, skid control warning lights on , dealer service checked and recommended replacing battery which was done by them. following day warning lights still on intermittently , returned to dealer for service but the warning lights would not come on while the dealer had it. was advised it was not a safety issue, just malfunctioning warning lights. now( october 2007) the lights are always on and when returned to dealer for service again was told this time it was the skid control ecu, and recommend replacing skid control ecu. was also told it that the abs and skid control were not functioning when lights were on so handling would be affected (safety issue ). at this time i am gathering information on whether it should be replaced or not. *tr

Dt*the consumer stated the vsc warning light illuminated. the dealer believed the problem was the yaw rate sensor. the check engine light illuminated, the dealer told the consumer there was nothing wrong, and it was probably a loose gas cap. while driving, the vsc activated, the consumer was able to gain control of the vehicle. updated 09/15/06. *jb

Headlights will not shut off after the engine is turned off. also, a buzzing noise comes from the fuse box while the headlights are on. as a result of the headlights staying on, the battery runs down. the only way to start sequoia is to jump/boost with another car/battery. legacy toyota, 4115 jonesboro road, union city, ga 30291, 770.964.8888 replaced the fuse box junction block assembly and block assembly on 11/30/04. i took the sequoia back to legacy this morning for the same problem. *jb

During normal driving vsc, trac control and brake lights all lit up. lights go off and come back on intermittently. i have been on edmunds website and see too many other people with this exact issue. it will cost on the average over $1,000 to correct. my vehicle is no longer covered under warranty and is too young and expensive to have this issue. this is something that i feel toyota should recall. *jb

Vsc, trac and brake lights have been consistently on since 2004. *nm

The front braking system on 2001 sequoia was replaced and upgraded. *mr the brake jobs were performed at the following mileages: 15k, 25k, 30k, 55k, and 74k miles. the left wheel rattled over the rough road, the rear left strut made a noise when going over bumps due to a broken shock, and the engine light had come on. *sc *jb

Toyota sequioa 2001 stalls and shuts off when the vehicle is stop and in gear. on many occasion while getting ready to entering into traffic or proceeding from a stop, the vehicle stalls and shut off stranding vehicle in the middle of road or intersection. *ak

Automatic driver's side window slid inside door-could not roll up or down. intermittent problems with locking mechanism on rear door (liftgate). sometimes i can't unlcok it with my key-i have to unlock from inside at the driver's master control.*ak

I lease a used 2001 toyota sequoia sr5 4wd suv in november of 2001. the skid control ecu had failed in 2003 and a toyota dealership did not want to replace it for reasons that the warranty no longer covers it. to replace the ecu computer, i will have to pay over $2000.00. this problem prevents the anti-skid control and anti-lock brakes (abs) to function. i have found out that this problem with the ecu has been very common for the toyota sequoia's made between 2000 and 2003. there are several occasions where i almost had an accident because of failure of the abs and anti-skid control. toyota has clearly ignored and avoided to fix this problem. i hope you can help me. *jb

the check engine, vsc, and traction lights on my 2001 toyota sequoia all came on simultaneously at 82,000 miles, i was told that i need to replace the transmission for $3800.00 and the computer needs replacing for about $2000.00. the brakes have been constant struggle requiring replacement every 8 months. *tr

Purchased a toyota sequoia 7/01. been in and out of service ever since. we are currently on our 3rd set of brakes, 3rd trip computer, and 3rd set of tires, 2nd battery, 2nd amplifier. car only has 33,000 miles many other problems including some electrical. currently waiting for word from dealership on problems with transmission and fuel system. everything up to this point (except tires #3) has been covered by warranty. dealership got a case # with toyota so these problems will be covered if they persist. feel like we are on the path to a lemon. don't know how else to proceed. sent toyota a letter detailing problems, asking to possibly help us get into another vehicle. we are at the point where it is a new concern everyday with this car. help!!!!!!*ak

Tracking control and emergency brake lights stay on all the time. have had the problem fixed twice, but within a week or 2, the lights come back on and stay on incessantly. toyota service center says "there is nothing they can do about it", so i have lived with it for 4+ years now. the brakes shake the entire vehicle when applied, they feel warped or bumpy. again, "there is nothing they can do about it".

Engine stopped while driving 40 mph. would crank, but not start. efi1 fuse was burned out, replaced, and burned out again upon cranking.
