Recently reported STEERING problems on 2012 Toyota Camry

My eps light comes on and off sometime i'm driving and when it does that my radio goes out and wheel hard to steer.

Have noise in the power steering control module.steering is hard and dangerous.

Electric power steering goes out during driving, causes loss of power and inability to steer.

I was driving 2012 camry le at 55 mph and suddenly heard a pop and found power steering warning light came on the dash and stayed for more than 10 seconds. during that time the steering was hard to rotate and also the radio lost power. when the eps light gone the steering was easy and radio started working. since it was night, around 11.30 pm, not may cars were there, luckily nothing happened. it was scary that if it would happen during rush hour. i am scare to drive this car. i have to take this car to toyota dealer to check this out.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. while driving 15-18 mph, the steering seized without warning and the contact crashed into the side of another vehicle. a police report was filed and there were no injuries. the contact was able to drive the vehicle from the crash site back to his residence. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 62,000.

The steering column on my 2012 camry se will not stay in position. the lever that is supposed to lock the column into position keeps falling open, from gravity, allowing the column to telescope out, be pushed in, pull up, or down, with the very little pressure while driving the vehicle. the dealer tells me there's nothing they can do to repair this, that they'll have to replace the entire column for $1,400 since my car is out of warranty (over 36,000 miles). the column being so pliant, falling out of position makes driving, especially tight turning or sudden stops very dangerous. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. while driving 30 mph, the steering wheel seized and the electrical power steering, lower engine oil, charging system warning, and malfunction lamp indicators illuminated. the vehicle was able to restart after the vehicle was recharged by another vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 88,000.

In spite of new brakes, 2 alignments and 2 different sets of tires the car, purchased as a certified toyota in dec 2015, continues to wander all over the road/track poorly and will pull quickly to the right when i brake especially when traveling at freeway speeds. i have had two close calls of near hitting the car in the lane next to me due to the force of the pull. this car was in tended for my teenager but in all good conscious the issue is of such concern i do not feel it would be safe for her to drive. i have the toytota dealer i purchased from that my only recourse is to trade it in and another toyota dealer stating that it is inherent to the vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. the contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the steering wheel seized. the contact mentioned the steering wheel was able to function after the interior lights shut off. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 72,560. updated 03/10/16*lj *cn

First, the transmission is really jerk when accelerate at stop light. it also jerk really hard when down shift. it feels like the transmission is delay. second, the electric steering wheel. the radio just shut off by itself and the steering wheel light came on at the same time, and then the light came off and the radio restarted by itself again. i feel like the electric has some problem.

While driving on a city street and turning, the steering suddenly "froze" (power assist failed) and a steering wheel warning light came on. car was driven home and then towed to toyota dealership for investigation. after investigating, it was found that the pig voltage was low (11 volts) and fluctuated while turning. upon removal of lower dash and steering column, found no bolt in ground wire from emps ecu. installed a bolt and resecured ground wire to instrument panel safety bar, and then voltage was normal and steering was normal during road test. could not locate original ground bolt.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the steering wheel seized as the electric power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact mentioned that the failure recurred after the vehicle was serviced under an unknown manufacturers recall. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 29,000. updated 02/12/16*lj; 4/27/18*jb *tr

When i was backing out of my garage i noticed the steering got hard to handle and hard to turn.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. while driving at an unknown speed, the power steering failed and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 33,000. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 33,000.

The steering wheel just got hard driving on the highway car report

The tire pressure tends to fluctuate often requiring weekly air check to maintain the proper psi. the driver front tire psi cold will read 36 , front pass 34 , rear drive r35, rear pass at 36, when the tires heat up after appx. 38 mile out and you check the psi it will read 39, 39. 36,37, or at time you may get 39,37.39.f you have to come to a stop light, sudden stop, or a stop at night on a non familiar road like i had to in the rain on a uneven road the vehicles tail end tends to slide to the left and the front end feels as if you hit a pot hole do to slight wear and tear groves in the road that don't become apparent until your on that 1 to 2 feet section in the road. is this a common complaint with any others or am i over being over concerned with the drive performance on uneven pavement or roads. my concern is the abuse on the brake components, the steering , the tires , fuel consumption and keeping control of your vehicle . is it a computer problem, wheel component, tires, or me or all of the above. i purchased my toyota for durability, efficacy, and my family safety on the road .

I was driving along at 30 mph when i herd a pop and the steering light came on the dash. the power steering quit i was in a lot of traffic with only arm strong steering. i got off the road as soon as i could and called the toyota dealer i was able to drive carefully to get there. the dealer told me this was the first time they had seen this problem this could have caused a serious accident i would been going 65 or 70 and had this happen...updated 11/12/15 *bf the consumer has since sold the vehicle. updated 11/18/15.*jb

Another vehicle made hit my vehicle from rear side but air bags did not deployed and child safety airbag was not also activated across him and sterling also got locked while engine was on. *tr

2012 toyota camry. consumer writes in regards to electric power steering problems. *smd the consumer stated with the electric power steering, the vehicle would drift to the left and right in and out of lane he was trying to stay in. the vehicle seemed to have a mind of its own, and it would take its own course down the road. the consumer stated it was very dangerous at 60 mph, and the curves were even worse, as the consumer needed to correct the steering a lot more. when he turned onto a curve, the electric power steering would over react and continued turning the vehicle after he stopped turning the wheel, at that point he had to turn the wheel the other way to correct the over steering. *jb

I received a recall notice for the hvac assembly. i called my dealer and verified my vin and scheduled an appointment to have the assembly replaced on 1/2/2014. when i arrived at the dealership i was told that they did not have the part and the asst svc mgr [xxx] told me he would get the part and call me. i have not heard from him and when i call he is on vacation. i called the service mgr and left my info and have not received a call back. i need to have this replaced as it is an extreme safety issue and i need this car for school. the dealership is toyota of hollywood, 1841 n state rd 7, hollywood, fl 33021. phone 954-893-4667. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

As soon i got the safety recall for the toyota camry, i immediately called up bingham toyota. the guy whom i spoke with said, "he asked for then name of the car and phone number, next give me a sec to look it up and then told me that the part is a special one which required a special order," i asked how long will that take he said, "one week." now its 2014 and i still haven't heard a call yet, as i was told that once the parts came in i would be notify by the number i gave him. *tr

I recently purchased this car as a certified toyota used car with 3675 miles. at speeds above 50 mph the car constantly wanders from right to left requiring constant steering correction. this is very tedious to the driver and creates a dangerous situation in attempting to keep the vehicle within the designated lane of traffic. all tires are inflated to factory specifications and the car is properly aligned. this is a new vehicle. there are numerous complaints on line related to this topic and vehicle. i contacted both a toyota dealer and toyota u.s.a. and both had no records of complaints and or recommended actions to repair this issue. the cause of this is most likely associated with the eps (electronic power steering) which toyota started to install into the camry in 2012. eps has been documented as having a numb feeling and in some cases wandering steering. unfortunately, i was unaware of this when acquiring this 2012 camry. previous to this car i leased a 2011 camry which did not have eps and no such wandering steering. i believe this is a "very unsafe" vehicle at highway speeds and ask that the nhtsa investigate this complaint further. i thank you for allowing the public to post such issues to your agency.*jb

As i was driving 30 mph, my power steering warning light went on and my power steering failed. thankfully there was no one behind me so i stopped my car and restarted it again. i was able to turn right onto a side street and then immediately it happened again. i pulled over to the side and parked my car. after a couple of minutes, i stopped the car and started it again and was able to drive it back home (less than a mile) without further incident. i immediately called my local toyota dealership and they were very responsive to my concern especially since this could have caused a crash with my 4-year old child in the car. after i dropped off my car at the dealership, they ran an inspection and found a code c1554 power supply relay failure and replaced my power steering ecu assy. although i'm glad this fix was covered under warranty, i will always have anxiety about it failing again especially since i've read other reports of steering failures in 2012 toyota camrys. toyota says that this is the first line of camrys with their eps (electrical power steering) system. with it being a new system for toyota and based on the complaints i've read on 2012 toyota camry's eps, i urge a more in-depth investigation on this. *tr

Power steering make grinding when turning, brakes squeaking when backing,a/.c have bad smell when i turn off the a/c leak lots of water, when i stop and took off the car skid and a light abs light on the panel.i spoke to the mgr and he toll me was normal when a/c off open the outside air to the smell go away. and for the steering he sad the car has electronic power steering and for brakes cause dirty and out of adjustment.on feb 16 i took the car again for brakes then nothing wrong stillmaking the clicking noise then a month after i get a letter for the recall but same problems still there i just want know if any recalls on this issues that i write in this letter for my concerns and safe which i don't feel safe driving this car it has 18,000 miles. *tr

The vehicle had been steering erratically and pulling to the left primarily. it feels as though the wind is buffeting the vehicle and it is difficult to maintain a steady course. when family have driven behind me it has been noted that the vehicle is all over the road. i was to take the vehicle to the shop for routine maintenance and to have the problem checked out this week but i had an accident. the car pulled to the left and i struck an oncoming vehicle.the day was cloudy but dry. there were no extenuating circumstances. both cars were totaled. i struck the vehicle left head light to my left head light. the other driver and i were both hospitalized for injuries. we are fortunate not to have been killed. i received a ticket for failure to maintain lane and will go to court in june.this is a dangerous vehicle and i would like to see something done before someone is killed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the steering wheel pulled to the left and the vehicle crashed into another vehicle. the vehicle was destroyed. the contact stated that he sustained a cut on his leg causing it to become infected. the contact stated that the other driver sustained cuts and bruises to her arms. the manufacturer was not notified of the accident and the cause of failure was unknown. the failure mileage was 11,000. the vin was unavailable.

Bought a new 2012 camry. first time on highway noticed excessive amount of play in the steering driving 50mph. i was very surprised on how difficult it is to keep the car driving straight at high speeds. steering wheel is very loose and erratic. driving next to a big rig truck i had to focus all my effort (moving my steering wheel left and right) to keep car centered. this is dangerous and the steering feels unstable at high speeds. i hope toyota can utilize a fix for this asap. i will be following up with my local dealer on my concerns. *tr

I have a toyota camry se 2012 (4-cyl) which i bought on 08/29/2012. on 12/31/2012 (the road was clear and dry, it was a cloudy day, no rain, snow, ice on the road) while starting to accelerate from a stop light, turning into a lane, after i stopped pressing the gas pedal, the car kept getting faster and faster (the gas pedal didn't get stuck and my foot wasn't on it), when i started to turn into a lane, the driver's side wheel locked up and to avoid a crash i had to turn the wheel to the other side, i ended up doing a diagonal skid into the other lane, i was able to get the car to stop and straighten it out and keep going. since the driver's side wheel locked up the car jerked me pretty hard and my neck and arm started to hurt since then and i am scheduled to take physical therapy. i took it to the dealer i bought it from for service (from 1/2/2013 - 1/10/2013) and after i picked it up i've been having the rpm sticking at 1.3 all the time so now it's worse than when i had it last. the car doesn't feel safe to drive and i don't want to put my life or other people's lives at risk. after calling toyota and explaining all of this they told me to go to the dealer and the dealer says that toyota is the one that can do whatever they want, the dealer's only resolution is to accept the car as a trade in and roll over the residual value into a loan for another car, but it isn't my fault so i shouldn't have to pay more in payments for a car and i shouldn't have to be paying for a car that's not safe for me or my family to drive. before the incident on 12/31/2012 i had taken it in to the dealer for the same reason, but i thought it was that the tires weren't gripping on dry asphalt, the dealer topped off the air and said it was fine, but the car kept doing the same thing and i didn't realize it was accelerating on it's own until what happened on 12/31/2012. *tr

Steering lacks on-center feel and this is particularly noticeable at highway speed. car wanders/darts left and right requiring constant corrective steering to keep car on course. this could be dangerous because even momentary lack of attention to the problem can cause the car to change direction significantly. *tr

P/o response ltr to toyota corp. re 2012 camrydate: december 26, 2013 - ...furthermore,my brother and i have stressed to everyone we have spoken with since our first contact on dec16, 2013 with toyota regarding these dangerous mechanical problems i.e., the unintended acceleration, steering pulling to the right as well as the offensive odor that occurs when the ac is turned on. ...no one will assist us until january 6, 2014...we cannot imagine that ceo [xxx]... would find it acceptable to wait three (3) weeks - until january 6, 2014- to first begin an investigation while being left with a defective and damaged toyota camry. [xxx]. did not respond to our phone call either. we located nov 16 2012 details and fwd to toyota corp: nov 16, 2012- at approximately 11:15pm on the 405s, all traffic was stopped by the police north of the skirball. we were standing still for about 10 minutes. suddenly, our car lunged forward due to unintended acceleration. as the car veered to the right, i managed, with great effort, to steer the car as we went into the lane to the right of us. after traveling more than 100 feet, i was finally able to get the car to come to a stop. thankfully, we did not hit and were not hit by passing police and fire vehicles. we also smelled something burning in our car for a couple of minutes. on november 17, 2012, we went into toyota service to report what had occurred the night before. we wanted toyota to know what had happened because it was very frightening and we were concerned about our safety. we also wanted to know how many other people had experienced this problem and how toyota had resolved this dangerous, safety problem. toyota service checked and responded that there was no recall for this unintended acceleration in the 2012 camry. unfortunately, we accepted that this was an isolated incident experienced only by us. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The car is very difficult to keep in a straight line, particularly at 70 mph and when driving in the passing lane on the open highway. i must correct my steering constantly, to keep the car from trying to go left. if you look away for just a moment, you will find yourself bearing left without even thinking about it. my dealer has been fully cooperating so far, but there have not been any correction of the problem. i have taken test drives with their service people, and even had the toyota factory service rep drive the car with me. he ordered the tow in to be adjusted and the tires rotated. had that done a few days ago and now the car constantly needs pressure on the wheel, toward the right, to keep it going straight down the road. it is most noticeable while you are in the passing lane at 70 mph. yesterday i made a trip to a city about 90 miles away. coming home i was in the left lane most of the time. i ended up with a really bad cramp in my left arm from holding constant right pressure on the wheel for about an hour. you don't dare look anywhere but straight ahead as you must constantly keep the steering corrected to stay in your lane. i believe this is a real safety issues as your total attention must be given to keeping the car in a straight line. if you are distracted, for even a moment, or look to either side you end up quickly driving out of your lane. not a good thing, particularly in heavy traffic at 70 mph! in the mean time, there appear to be many of us out there having this same drive-ability problem, and there is not yet any solution from toyota that can be applied. i encourage other with this same problem to keep pursuing toyota for a solution. this is the first year for their electric steering assist, and it really does need to have something done to alleviate this very unsafe driving condition. *tr

My 2012 toyota camery se limited edition wanders all of the time. the car never tracks straight. also none of the nose body lines match. i have brought back the car to the dealer, tarbox toyota, ri, and was told that the car was test driven. also that the car was in spec. although i was never presented with any documented paperwork. as for the bodylines i was told that this wasn't a bently. that none of the bodylines on any car match. i feel as though i was brushed off. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. the contact was driving approximately 40 mph when the vehicle veered from left to right independently. the failure recurred continuously. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis where they advised the contact that the steering wheel was not aligned. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred after the repair was performed. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 761.

The car wanders: it will drift to the right, i will correct with a little turn to the left. it then drifts to the left and i need to correct by steering to the right. at no time can i get the car to drive straight. furthermore, there is no feeling in the steering wheel. it's like driving in a video game with only visual feedback.. this makes driving tiring and dangerous. if i take a second to look in the mirrors, when i look back to the road i'm either drifting to the right or left. i've taken it to the dealer and after 3 hours all they could find was the tire pressure being 2 lbs low and the toe alignment was a little off. their conclusion was that it was the electrical power system and that there was nothing they could do about it. i should just get used to it. *tr

I went to pick up my vehicle on september 3, 2012. on the way i found the vehicle was rigid and the suspension was not working properly. when car hit various imperfections in the road there was a banging noise and the car would vibrate. i felt dizzy as during my time spent driving car. the car seems unsafe to use. this should not occur on a vehicle that cost $31k and on the first day that i am driving vehicle. in addition the steering felt more weighted on the left as opposed to the right. when i turned left there was greater resistance. i contacted the customer relations manager that same day and he indicated he felt it maybe a tire pressure problem. he then stated that i should bring the car in for service department to see what the issue is. i later discovered that the radio sound fluctuated. i had contacted the service department to confirm my appointment and discovered that an appointment was never made. i notified toyota main office and they provided me with a case # [xxx]. the main office at toyota indicated that they would contact the customer relations manager. i will be going to advantage toyota in valley stream, ny on 9/8/12. please have someone investigate the issue regarding the suspension on these vehicles. i don't want someone else to incur the same issues i have. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

At highway speeds the car constantly wanders to the left and/or right requiring constant steering corrections. it is difficult to keep the car driving in a straight line at speed. initially i thought it the cause was cross-winds but the problem happens all the time even on calm days with no wind. i have also discarded road surface imperfections/angle as the problem occurs while driving on different roads. it takes a lot of concentration and constant movement of the steering to prevent the car from crossing into adjacent lanes. this is a safety hazard and should be investigated. thanks. *tr

Steering is vague and not predictable. never had a car with elec. steering. car follows its own course. it takes a lot of attentions to keep it on the road. i think its something to check out. did not go to the dealer yet. *tr during a test drive at the dealer, they did confirm there was a problem. however, there was no remedy to fit it. updated 08/27/12

I am unable to stay in control of the steering. it seems to go where it wants. car veers to the right or the left and i am constantly having to re-adjust the steering. problem more noticeable in windy conditions. dealership says they have had no similar complaints on the camry se. they have done 4 re-alignments and replaced the tires and the problem still exists. seems reasonable that if not corrected, the problem will only get worse to the point of being extremely dangerous in wintry weather. *tr

My 2012 camry hybrid steers hard to the left when braking when the road is crowned along the passenger side of the vehicle. i have taken it in for repair three times since i purchased it in december. first two times the dealer said that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and that toyota hadn't registered similar complaints from other owners. the most recent visit to the dealer had a different result. on may 18th the dealer acknowledge that there was a problem with the regenerative braking system and that toyota was aware of the problem. the dealer opened an investigation with toyota and toyota admitted that other owners are having similar problems with their 2012 tch. toyota and the dealer have no solutions. the vehicle is unsafe and no solutions exist. *tt

This is the 5th camry we have owned since 1994 and we have been very happy with every one except this one. i feel very unsafe driving this car on the road, but especially in minnesota winter driving. my first impression was the feeling of driving a rear wheel drive car on ice. the car squirms like it is about to loose control and go into a spin, or like the rear of the car wants to move sideways. i am a professional driver 59 years old and consider myself an excellent driver in all conditions and have been driving in minnesota winters all my life. this condition is also very noticeable on dry roads because the car needs constant steering corrections because it feels like it wanders side to side. i complained to the dealer, suggesting to them that the alignment may be off. they checked and said it was o.k. i will be selling this car soon if i do not get this resolved. *tr
