Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. after starting the engine and shifting into the drive gear, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and surged forward. after depressing the brake pedal and stopping, the vehicle would no longer drive forward or in reverse. after the incident, the check engine indicator remained illuminated. the cause of the failure was not determined. the local dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 60,000.

On december 3, 2017, my husband was parking our 2009 camry on a city street when we experienced the terrifying unintended acceleration problem that has plagued this model ' and was supposed to have been fixed by the floor mat and accelerator pedal recalls. as my husband shifted into drive to move slightly forward in the parking space, there was a low roaring, racing motor-type sound from the gear box/transmission area and the car suddenly accelerated. braking could not stop the car and it drove into the car ahead of us. because we were moving at low speed there was no significant damage to either car. but there was permanent damage to our trust in the safety and reliability of our 2009 camry, which we vowed never to drive again. our occasional prior experiences with the car's racing motor problems had never caused us to lose control. for example, a few years ago we had racing engine problem when braking for a light after coming off a high speed interstate. on both december 2 and december 3, 2017, we had a racing motor experience during parking when we were in reverse but it did not cause any loss of control of the vehicle. in each of these instances we were able to use the brakes to stop the car. the tow truck driver who took the car away was able to drive the car half a block to his truck without experiencing the unintended acceleration problem.

I have a 2009 toyota camry se with 53,000 miles on it. there was a noise coming from the engine during driving . upon inspection i found out that there was no coolant in the reservoir. i also found that there was pink powder residue on the engine near the serpentine belt where the water pump is located . did some research on the internet and found out many other people with the cars built from 2007-2009 camrys had the same issue under warranty. some cars had 10,000 miles or less with the problem. also found out toyota replaced the water pumps on these camrys with a waterpump built from a different company. i filled the reservoir with coolant and took it to toyota and they said indeed the water pump was leaking. they would not cover the costs under warranty since it had expired. there would be no coolant leaking under the car. during many of the oil changes the toyota technicians would add coolant and top it off and never mentioned anything about the water pump leaking . i only found out because i saw the coolant reservoir was empty and started looking for a leak. i believe toyota knew these water pumps were defective , and only changed it for people who complained about the problems under warranty with a different manufacturer of the water pump free of charge . engines without coolant can get hot and catch fire. please look into this issue of defective water pumps.

Water pump fail on 79800. start make crank noise and then antifreeze star spill all over.

Transmission hesitates when accelerating from slowing down or stopping and when initially putting into reverse

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while the vehicle was idling or when the gear shifter was in reverse or drive, the vehicle would vibrate violently. the failure occurred numerous times. in addition, the air compression failed to function. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where an oil pressure consumption test was performed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,852.

Purchased a used camry 3 months ago and find out front axels need to be replaced. while driving and stopping here a fast ticking sound.

Bought 09 camry new. in 2015, @ 130,000 miles, the "low oil" warning light came on. took it to the dealer to do the oil consumption test, (they overfilled the engine with oil). when came back in 1200 miles was told the car is burning oil but not enough for toyota to cover the repair (since they overfilled the engine with oil) the car continued to consume more oil. now at 170,000 miles, the car burns around 2 qrts of oil every 1000. very disappointing.

15,000 miles after having the water pump replaced, it was leaking again and dealer replaced it under warranty. why no recall on this part? i'm now on my third one at 36k miles! *tr

Last year on august 2012, my car stop running and i brought to one of the mechanic that towed and fixed my water pump. this year, i brought my car to toyota dealer for some recalls and find out that my antifreeze is entered to my water pump again and need to replace with new one... total cost will be more than 650.00 dollars. i wonder if there any recall for this matter before or do i have to deal with the same problem every years!!! please investigate this problem. thanks *tr

2009 toyota camry. consumer writes in regards to transmission problems. *smd the consumer stated shortly after purchasing the vehicle, she detected a slight challenge as she shifted the gears. the vehicle was serviced and the problem seemed to have disappeared. unfortunately, subsequent inspections and maintenance service did not resolve the issue. during her drive on june 1, 2013, the clutch pedal became sluggish and did not immediately return to its original position upon release and within seconds, it stayed stuck to the floor. the vehicle was towed to the dealer. although, she was not charged, the service included an adjustment to the clutch pedal and a test drive. additionally, it was suggested she return the vehicle for further evaluation if the issue became problematic. the problem with the clutch and eventually the stick resurfaced several hours after retrieving the vehicle from the dealer. the consumer returned to the dealer, where they replaced the accumulator assembly, hose, tube and clutch release.

Tl* the contact owns 2009 toyota camry. the contact was attempting to accelerate but the vehicle exhibited a 10-15 second delay before it would respond. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but they were unable determine a failure. the contact then took the vehicle to a second dealer who was also unable to diagnose the vehicle. the manufacturer was contacted but offered no assistance. the contact took the vehicle to a private mechanic and was told that the failure was with the actual accelerator. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact mentioned that the failure had not started until after the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign id number: 12v091000 (exterior lighting: brake lights: switch). the failure mileage was 29,800. updated 7/18/12 *cn the consumer stated there was a 20-30 second delay when shifting to second gear. the battery had to be replaced and the brake light remained on after the vehicle was started. updated 07/31/12

When attempting to park, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and i was forced to stop it by running into a palm tree in order to avoid hitting people and other cars or causing more serious damage. *js

This 2009 camry which is still under warranty is equipped with traction control with no switch to disable it during icy conditions. the car is operated in colorado where snow packed and icy roads are common. when these conditions exist and the car is stopped on a slight incline or at a stop sign or traffic light on an incline, the power to the front wheels is automatically shut down because the wheels are spinning on the ice and the traction control shuts the power down to them to the point they will not turn. at this point, the car will not move unless you back it up and take a run at the hill. this is dangerous for 2 reasons: 1. if there is a car behind you, you cannot back up which creates a traffic jam and requires cars go around you which can be a hazard. 2. when you get the opportunity to take a run at the hill, you cannot stop otherwise the car will stall which means you must enter into a street without stopping which is dangerous and in many cases illegal. the dealership advised that it is impossible to install a switch, and that i should express my concerns to the toyota experience line. this situation is a catastrophe waiting to happen and needs immediate attention. also, the 2012 camry has a switch to disable the traction control in icy conditions. in the interest of safety the switch must be retrofitted to older models. *tr

Vehicle was involved in an accident and after the initial contact operator tried to stop her vehicle but it wouldn't stop. she stated that she was pressing the brake but the vehicle was rolling backwards. she stated that she tried her brakes, tried pumping her brakes, tried putting the vehicle in neutral and tried the brakes again but none of these actions stopped her vehicle from rolling. she stated that she then put the vehicle in park and tried the brakes but the vehicle continued to roll backwards. she stated that at that point she made the decision to exit the vehicle. she was knocked to the ground and dragged by the vehicle suffering lacerations to both her legs. she stated that the vehicle then accelerated forward and finally came to rest on sidewalk and lawn of a residence. while responding medical personnel were treating the accident victim, a member of the fire department reached in vehicle to turn the vehicle off. the vehicle then started rolling forward even though vehicle was turned off and in park. *tr

I have camry 2009. it currently has 34400 miles. according to toyota dealer - after a technician tests drive the vehicle - the issue is described "downshift issue under heavy brake". below is details of the problem. after i apply brake at stop sign or traffic light, the vehicle is stopped but then vehicle is still jumping up - moving up just right after it stops. below is how toyota responds on the issue. on august 5th, 2011, i bring the car to toyota dealer. the technician is able to duplicate the issue and open a case number reporting to gst (gulf state toyota). i have to wait for an appointment with gst and toyota dealer until 8/30/2011. on august 31st, i brought the car in 2nd time so that the dealer can collect more information and send to gst (according to the dealer). the dealer told me they could not duplicate the issue last time. but they will need to re-program (software) on the computer system so that the computer system can re-learn the shifting pattern of the transmission. here is my opinions. i am not convinced at all this will re-solve the issue. the issue might appear again any time. here are some more facts. during the waiting time - 3 weeks - i do not drive the vehicle at all. the dealer certainly does not drive the vehicle long enough before they can see the issue again. when i drive the vehicle to the dealer on the 2nd time, i see it happens twice. this kind of issue absolutely makes me very nervous when i have to apply braking. i hope toyota can root cause this issue as soon as possible. who knows this issue can be worst and totally out of controls one day. *tr

On wednesday, 2/16/11, at 4:50 p.m. i was traveling down sudbury street in boston, ma to make a right hand turn onto congress street in boston. i came down the hill and stopped at a red traffic light. my car, for no apparent reason, began to race and would not stop. i applied more pressure to the brake and shifted the car into park. it continued to race for 5-10 seconds after i did this. this was a very frightening incident, given there was a stopped vehicle in front of me, a vehicle behind me and many pedestrians at that hour. i no longer feel secure with the car and am anticipating that this may re-occur at any time. *tr updated 1/13/2012 *ln *tr

I was driving my car down the road about 2 miles away from my house it became hard to accelerate. the skid light, vsc light and check engine light all came on at once. i pulled over to the side of the road. i turned the car off started it back up it drove fine but the lights were still on. i contacted the dealership and took the car in. this was purchased as a dealer demo and has 36,000 miles on it. they told me there is water in my engine and the oil was milky. to me this sounded like a head gasket but they assured me they ran a test for that. they replaced the throttle body and the pcv valve claiming the valve was not working properly this was the cause for the water. i don't know if the part is still around or not. i hope this fixes the problem. they told me i should warm it up for 15 to 20 minutes a day which sounds a little weird to me being a fairly new car. *tr

2009 toyota camry. consumer writes regarding vehicle stalling in the acceleration process *tgw the dealer stated the stall in the acceleration, was caused by the sequencing of the transmission. the stall would occur as the consumer made a rapid change from deceleration to acceleration. the consumer was informed the stall was a built in design feature. the consumer stated to minimize the stall, she must manually down shift the transmission whenever the engine is in the deceleration phase. recently, a slow moving 18 wheeler unexpectedly pulled into the consumers lane of traffic, while traveling at highway speeds. the consumer stated her natural reaction was to remove her foot from the accelerator, putting the engine /transmission into deceleration mode. as the situation unfolded, she concluded that the rapid acceleration and lane change was the safest method. when the consumer tried to accelerate around the truck, there was no reaction from the vehicle. the transmission delayed responding and when it did respond, it chose a gear which produced no meaningful forward motion, but lots of noise. consequently, she was forced to brake very hard, but the brakes failed to perform as designed. the next day, the dealer explained there was a factory alert issue on the brake pads. the pads were replaced, and the rotors were turned. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that while driving various speeds the vehicle would hesitate when trying to accelerate to higher speeds. approximately one week later the vehicle just completely stalled. no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who informed the contact that she needed to replace the transmission. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were approximately 11,400.

2009 toyota camry - excessive acceleration and abrupt change in transmission when cruise control tries to catch up with the set speed limit after a dip in speed- toyota tech saw the problem, accepts that its happening - toyota's response "get used to it". *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph downhill with the cruise control activated, the transmission failed to shift as the engine rpms increased abnormally. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 18,000 and the current mileage was 28,000.

I own a 2009 camry...one that has been recalled and will be addressed through my local toyota dealer. however, on three or four separate occasions, as i was backing out from a parking space and/or my garage, as i applied my brakes, there would be a simultaneous acceleration. i do not believe it is related to the current acceleration/floor mat issue nor my stepping on the brake and accelerator at the same time but i just wanted to bring this to your attention in the event that others have experienced the same concern. thanks. *tr

Several weeks ago, i had a couple of incidences, where my 2009 toyota camry gear lever would not shift from park to drive. after several attempts of turning on/off ignition, depressing brakes, and tugging lever, the gear would then shift from park to drive. on 08-01-2010, i went to the mall and spent several hours there. when i turned on the ignition, feet on the brakes, the shift lever would not budge. after 30-45 minutes of trying to shift the lever, i decided to call mall security to call for a tow. the security guard suggested that he should give it a try, "the lever shifted from park to drive". i was very concerned. in the previous incidences, it never took so long for the lever to shift. the incidences have occurred first thing in the morning; after work or after the car has been sitting for a number of hours. on 08-02-2010, i took the car to the dealership, first thing in the morning; i was there at 6:35am. after i explained the above, they inspected and test drove the car. the service person came back to me and informed me that something must have spilled on/in the gear box. i absolutely denied that assumption. he then stated that they would take apart the gear box. again, he came back and stated that something sticky was found "on top" and gave me an estimate for replacing gear shaft. again, i absolutely denied that anything fell on or in the gear box. and, why was i not summoned to look and this sticky residue. he then called the service manager, who attempted to explain that he could not justify replacing gear shaft under warranty because the problem is not being detected at the present time. and, there is about 7 or 8 reasons why the gear lever would not shift. however, they gave me a quote to replace gear shaft. i was able to speak to one of the technicians, without the manager being present, who stated that there was something definitely wrong with the gear shaft. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that after the vehicle had stopped and the accelerator pedal was engaged, the vehicle hesitated to move forward. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the computer was reset. the failure continued to occur; therefore, the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the computer was reset again. the failure continued to occur. the failure mileage was approximately 30,000. the current mileage was approximately 36,000.

On december 31, 2008, i purchased a new 2009 toyota camry se from marietta toyota. the car has a persistent hesitation problem which makes the car unsafe in many situations. i had an incident around february 20, 2010 where the hesitation problem almost caused an accident. i was pulling into traffic on south cobb drive from a grocery store parking lot. traffic flow demanded that i merge into traffic briskly without delay - something i expect to be able to do with a $30,000 v6 toyota camry. i gave the car gas and it hesitated horribly. the engine died down then finally went with such force that the car vibrated violently as the front wheels spun out. the car would not go. as traffic approached i was scared and really appreciative of the drivers who slowed down. i have brought the car to the dealership and reported the problem three times. the first time i was told that this is the way the car works and that i would get used to it. after driving the car for over a year and just over 20,000 miles, i am absolutely not 'used' to it. the second time i brought the car to the service department at marietta toyota they did something to the computer software. this did nothing to improve the car's performance. on my third visit i spoke with a representative in the service department. he was very polite and honest. representative told me that in his opinion (he stated many times making sure that i understood that this was his opinion) toyota made a mistake in how they designed the transmission and computer software. representative explained to me that toyota tried to make the transmission stay in the highest gear possible at all times to save gas and that when the accelerator was pressed the computer took a few moments to determine which gear it should downshift to. he said that he had many people (40 to 50 per week) complain about the same thing i was complaining about. he said he thought it was a definite problem with the car and that there was nothing that could be done. *tr

This is 2009 toyota camry. i was getting out of parking garage. as soon as i put my gear to "d" and pressed the gas pedal a little bit, it started to speed up and the gas pad got stuck. i didn't have much room to stop the car and the car hit the pillar in front of me. *tr

cnn is giving bad advice on toyota gas pedal problem i disagree with the advice provided by omar panjshiri, a certified toyota technician at the chantilly repair center in chantilly, virginia. according to the report, he stated that: "if the pedal is stuck in a depressed position, here is what the driver can do: (i) shift the transmission to neutral; (ii) turn off the ignition switch; and (iii) apply the brakes and pull over." mr. panjshiri explained that with the engine cut off, "you will lose some power steering assist, but you will still be able to steer the vehicle to a safe stopping position." this is very bad advice. the transmission should not be shifted to neutral. if the pedal is stuck in a depressed position, the driver should turn off the ignition switch and apply the brakes. the driver should not shift the transmission into neutral. the transmission keeps the engine going, helping to slow down the car, and it keeps the power steering assist working. a few years ago the gas pedal return spring broke on my car while i was driving. i immediately turned off the ignition switch and applied the brakes. this response should be taught in driving classes. *tr

I have a 2009 toyota camry. on my way home from work around 10:00 pm on 1/25/10. my car shut off while i was driving. i was driving on a two lane road. while pressing on the accelerator and passing a semi truck. as i pulled back into my lane my car just shut off. the check engine and battery light came on. i pulled the car over to the side of the road.and would not start. when i would start the car and put into drive the car would turn off. then i waited for about 20 minutes. and tired again and it worked just fine and the check engine light turned off. next day i took it to the dealer and they advised my there might have been some debris in my gas. i always fill up super. i am filling this complaint because i found out today that they are investigating the electrical throttle control on some toyota's and thought this might be helpful. thank you *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that her vehicle may be involved recall 10v017000, power train:clutch assembly:pedal/linkage. the vehicle has not experienced any failures and the contact has not received a letter from the manufacturer. the contact is concerned about the risk involved and doesn't want to drive the vehicle until she receives a recall per her vin. the dealer and manufacturer have been notified. there are no failures at this time. the current mileage was 7800.

Sticking gas pedal on my 2009 toyota camry hybrid. caused un-intended acceleration an almost an accident as i was crossing a divided highway near my home. this situation has happened to me at least 6 times in the last 2-3 months. the problem appears to be happening more frequently, where the gas pedal suddenly sticks and the car races out of control. i feel the cars is unsafe to drive. *tr

bought an 2009 toyota camry in april, 2009. the engine would run rough and the it felt like the transmission would jerk and did downshift at random. i bought it in for service several times and was told that because my wife and i both drive the car the computer on board was adjusting back and forth to our driving habits. i didn't think it was a safety problem until the recall was announced. now i look back on my complaints and feel their is something wrong with the electronic or software associated with controlling engine or transmission performance. i have related this to venice camry in venice florida who have told me their is nothing wrong with my car. *tr

I own a 2009 toyota camry hybrid. there was no indication prior to this accident to any problem with my vehicle. on the day of accident, i was about to pull into a parking space at a local hospital parking lot. half-way into the parking space, with my foot on the brake, the car unexpectedly accelerated on it's own. the car jumped a 6" curb and 9' island causing vehicle damage. all the while my foot was on the brake. the incident was reported to toyota and the they had an engineer inspect the vehicle. their conclusion was there was no problem with the brakes. the problem was (is) unexplained acceleration - not the brakes. i believe toyota doesn't want to acknowledge there is an acceleration problem with my 2009 toyota camry hybrid. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry which was purchased in 2008. he stated that within 5,000 miles of purchasing the vehicle, both the left and right front axles failed and were replaced under warranty. while driving 70 mph, the engine revved and the vehicle began to accelerate. the vehicle accelerated over 118 mph for approximately 3 miles while the contact was depressing the brake pedal in an attempt to stop the acceleration. the vehicle did not slow down. he then forced the vehicle into neutral and the vehicle began to coast until finally coming to a stop. the dealer was contacted and they advised him not to drive the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to the dealer. the contact had not yet heard from toyota, to date. no repairs were made to the vehicle. the failure and current mileages were 26,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact parked the vehicle in the residence garage. the engine remained running with the gear shifter placed in the park position. immediately after the driver exit the vehicle, there was an unintended surge of acceleration. the vehicle crashed into the trash cans and garden cart that were in the garage. the vehicle engine was turned off. there were minor damages to the front bumper and front driver side door. the vehicle was taken to a collision center for the body damage estimate. the vehicle has not been repaired at this time. the failure mileage was 9,000.

I bought a 2009 toyota camry le in september 2008. i was still driving my old car until i sold it in march 2009. when i started driving the new car more, i noticed that occasionally the car would hesitate and it seemed like it was in neutral for a couple of seconds when i let go of the accelerator and step on it again. this happens maybe several times a month. since i got stuck in the intersection for a couple of seconds, that really scared me. people were waiting for me to cross the intersection, but my car wouldn't go. i can see someone rear-ending my car in the future because of this problem. the car also gets stuck in the middle of the road when i slow down and then step on the accelerator. i googled the problem and found that many, many people have the same problem. use the words "2009 camry" and "transmission problem" if you want to google it. people complain that the transmission slips. i believe that is what my car is doing. i brought my car to the dealer to have them fix the problem yesterday. they had my car all day for that and a 5,000-mile service. i was so disappointed when i got my car back and they said that the transmission was normal. they test drove it and didn't get that problem. i am really concerned about this because my car is under warranty and i complained about the problem and the dealer said that it is normal. there is something wrong with that! i think that is a dangerous car and the dealer is denying that the car has this problem. i feel like they do not honor their warranty. the consumers are being ripped off. i also complained about my vent button releasing every three minutes on cold, rainy days. they also could not duplicate the problem. so, i am still stuck with that problem and nothing has been fixed under warranty. please investigate and have toyota recall the cars with transmission problems. new cars should not be like that. *tr

With the media coverage of toyota problems, i saw a woman interviewed who complained of "sudden acceleration" with her toyota while braking. i recognized that it is something i have experienced frequently with our 2009 camry xle v6 w. 6 speed auto trans. it is not a "sudden acceleration" problem, but a sudden free-wheeling problem, most noticeable when driving on level or downhill roads. as you brake to come to a stop, the auto trans. downshifts into a lower gear, but it doesn't do it fast enough, so it momentarily goes through neutral creating a momentary free-wheeling situation that does accelerate the car just as you are wanting to come to a stop. it is particularly disconcerting when braking into an intersection while going down hill. i called the toyota customer care number on 5/21/09 to report it, hoping there might have been a software upgrade. they said it was not normal and created case # 0905126552 and told me to take the car to my dealer, which i did on 06/01/09. the dealer reset the automatic transmission computer, but that did not correct the problem. i later reported it again to toyota on a 07/22/09 customer survey. we have been living with it, but are careful when braking into an intersection. *tr

While passing a truck, step on gas to go into passing gear and the car went to full throttle. after the pass and letting off gas the car stayed at full throttle. turned off key and then restarted and car was still at full throttle. coasted to a stop, w/o steering or brakes, (no engine power). put car into park and then restarted. at that time it returned to normal operation. called dealer and was told they had not heard of this happening on a 2009 toyota camry(4 cyl). *tr

In san diego earlier this year, at night, to enter heavy ast moving traffic from on ramp floored gas pedal in 2009 toyota camry with new heavy duty floor mats, and had max runaway acceleration. was able to stop with heavy brake pressure, hitting stop engine button didn't work. checked everything i could and tried again, same response, called 911 and got tow truck on the way. finally figured out floor mat had caught gas pedal and was holding it down. pulled floor mat back into place, and then no problem. told 911 as i recall to forget the tow truck. got up to 40- 50 or so mph. haven't reported this to toyota yet. *tr

(2009 toyota camry) my vehicle lurched forward causing near collision with other vehicle during normal stop and go. problem occurs periodically, according to local toyota dealer's not enough to cause concern. vehicle remains in same condition. this issue is not related to the sticking acceleration pedal issue. *tr

Vehicle hesitate during acceleration. vehicle surges/accelerates slightly when not pressing pedal to accelerate. tire pressure light always comes on even when tires are properly inflated. vehicle runs "hard" when cruising at 40mph. there is a hard engine running sound. *tr

Toyota camry 2009 is downshifting when brake is tapped, holding gear after acceleration and experiencing harsh shifting. shift cellenoid replaced but did not alter malfunction of vehicle. problem reported at 1005 miles on odometer september 20, 2008. after repeated trips to dealer the problem has not been resolved. *cn
