On 12/11/12 i was on the highway and the check vsc system light came on with the abs lights, master warning, brake lights, and others. the brakes were hard to depress. luckily there was no traffic that morning or else i would have caused an accident. i pulled off the road and shut the car down. i restarted the car and the lights were off and it was drivable again. i immediately called the dealership and brought the car in. they told me they were not able to retrieve a trouble code except for battery voltage. they replace a battery that cost me $511. that did not fix the problem. on 12/22/12 the problem occurred again and i rolled into an intersection because i was not able to depress the brakes all the way. once again, luckily there were no cars in the intersection. brought it to the dealership and was told once again they were not able to retrieve a trouble code. from that time on i tried replacing tires because the master mechanic told me it my be the different ware on my tires, still no relief. from 2012 to yesterday the warnings appeared. there was the same ticking and squeaking sound that was originally reported. the light were on constantly and the breaking system was still difficult to depress. i had to make sure i rented a when driving long distances and to leave plenty of room while driving to ensure safe distance for my faulty braking system. so, it was fixed with $2000 to replace the brake actuator system by a different dealership. now my car sounds normal and drives normal again. i believe that if so many people are having the same safety problem there should be a recall. luckily i was never involved in a collision or fatality but i could definitely see it happening. *tr
Regularly when i drive this car i press the brakes and they do not engage or they engage on a delay. i have mentioned it to the toyota service center several times. i first noticed the issues immediately after i purchased the car. i reported my concerns to toyota who dismissed my complaint. toyota always tells me nothing is wrong with the brakes. they also told me that it would cost my $140 to look into the problem. *tr
My 2007 toyota camry hybrid began to consistently make noises as i depressed the brake pedal (with the vehicle in the stopped position) for a few months before the vsc system failed. luckily, the failure occurred as i was backing out of the driveway and was able to stop. i had the vehicle towed to the dealer and proceeded to pay $2200 to have the abs actuator replaced. i have another 2007 toyota camry hybrid with just over 60,000 miles and it is beginning to make the same brake noise as the other vehicle. the dealer has said it is not a problem. i can only hope that when the brakes go out again i will not be traveling at a high rate of speed, or negotiating the mountain roads i use to commute daily. i heard yesterday on the news that this problem is being investigated. i hope they recall this vehicle soon and have this repaired before anyone is killed or injured. *tr
This vehicle has an electronic abs actuator pump that fails and leaves the car without abs brakes. apparently this is a common issues in this car for years 2007-2009 and toyota has not recalled this car to replace this part with an upgrade part that prevents the failure. i had to replace this part with my own money in 2012 and the car is giving signs the part is failing again. i would like the nhtsa help to have toyota evaluate this situation that is affecting many of this model car and issue and redesign this part and issue a recall for its replacement. *tr
Last 2 months i had call toyota to head quarter to report my car lost power, can't control break or steering wheel.. driving on the road with 40-45mph all the sudden the car had lost control steering and break and all the lights inside the panel blinking.... finally i can break my car (very hard). i put the gear back to park and turn of the power button when i try to turn it back on it still not come up all the lights blinking.. (several times) i quit.. pop up the hood and check forward make sure nothing come loose or ... i come back to the car and turn engine on, it working again.... i drive home.. toyota customer service offer me to going to close toyota dealer to have it check out, but i do not have times until last couple days it happen again.. i so concern about life driving this car now, i went to toyota dealer close to me sport city toyota, where i use to have it tune up. they check out my car and notify to me that my 12v battery had going bad drop to 7v (which they had notify for me on 2010) but i did not replace it. it did not sound right to me if the battery go bad for 2 years ago, but i still can drive my car to work and do things for 2 years with out any problems until now it had lost power for 2 times for the last 2 months. i drive my car home, removed the 12v battery out check with the meter 12v show up ... i need help with you people to see what to do next or the investigate to see this car had malfunction or some thins else ..... hope to hear from you. thank you. *tr
The abs brake accumulator was defective resulting in a warning light and loss of braking power. brake pedal would slowly depress all the way to the floorboard with greatly reduced braking effort. it was intermittent at first then worsened. i came close to a rear end collision and had to go to the shoulder of the road to prevent striking another vehicle. toyota would not assist in cost of repair. prices for the accumulator part ranged from $1200 up to near $3000. this part has to be replaced by a toyota shop due to computer programming requirements. i ended up shelling out about $1500 to have it replaced by a toyota shop after i acquired an older version of the part from an online source. it is apparent they have reworked the part and superseded its original catalog number (part # 44050-30300 abs actuator assy 2007 camry hybrid) to evidently reflect a corrected part. i have heard of others having this problem also. *tr
When brakes are applied (at a stop or coming to a stop) there is a pulsation that can be felt by the driver and passengers. since the first occurrence this happens 100% of the time. while this pulsation of the brakes has continued to occur, starting in july, 2013, occasionally, when starting the car the following occurs: 1. with the brake depressed to start car, when the car is put in gear (with brake still depressed) the brakes do not engage and the car slowly rolls backwards (this happens whether the car is in drive or reverse). 2. at the same time the brake pedal feels "soft" as it is not engaging the brakes. 3. at this time the following lights on the dashboard are lighted: red brake light (and the emergency brake is not engaged), yellow (!) lit, abs lit, ready light is also lit. 4. all of this while the brakes are "soft" and not functioning correctly. after 5-8 seconds the gas engine engages, the lights go off, and the brake jerks into action. to date, our dealership has no idea how to fix this problem. considering the number of incidents reported on safercar.gov and the number of internet reportings of this and related problems, it would seem that a service bulletin or a recall would be appropriate. not all dealerships are familiar with or know how to deal with the problem. *tr
The"check vsc system" sensor came on while i was driving. i was doing approximately 45 mph on the road. the road conditions were good and i keep up with maintenance. the abs failure light, brake and warning icons. i have it checked out and i'm told by toyota car's abs accumulator system and water pump must be replaced and that they hadn't have such issues before. after much research, this is a common complaint among toyota camry hybrid owners. this seems to be a design flaw and worse, my break pads and tires are brand new. this shouldn't be an issue but breaks pulsate and makes the vehicle unsafe as you can't control breaks when needed, especially, while parked on a inclined position. i am very concerned for my safety and the safety of others if my breaks were to fail because toyota has failed to recognize this as a vital recall repair. without brakes you can kill or injure someone and that bad water pump can cause your engine to overheat. please look into this and have toyota take responsibility for this situation! *tr
The brakes failed due to a bad actuator pump. i was lucky i did not get in an accident. i had it towed to the killeen toyota dealer and had it repaired/replaced for approximately $2000. *tr
While driving on the freeway, the brake failure light came up and the brakes became ineffective. as i was driving, the brakes went soft to the floor, and then all of a sudden engaged. it brake so hard, it felt like a hit something. a few days later, the brake light, traction/stability control (vsc) and abs lights turned on, and check vsc system displayed. i took it to toyota dealer and they diagnosed the problem as abs actuator failure and malfunctioning of the rear brakes. i contacted toyota about the failure and they claimed that my situation was one of a kind and there was not pattern of similar failures for this model. after prolonged arguments with toyota and the dealership, i could not get them to address the problem under the 100,000 miles warranty for the hybrid components of the car. i had to pay over $3,000 to get the car repaired. today, i found out (through consumer reports forums) that there are other owners of this car that have faced exactly the same problem, indicating that this is not an isolated problem and needs to be investigated by nhtsa before someone is seriously injured or loses life. *tr
The power brakes failed on my 2007 toyota camry hybrid while i was trying to stop after a vehicle ahead of me swerved exposing a broken down car in the traveling lane. ..updated 08-26-14 *bf
'check vsc system' along with brake light warning, abs warning, and pretty much every other warning light possible came on my 2007 camry hybrid around june of 2012. i hear pulsating under the hood constantly & when i turn on my car while in park with my foot on brake my car will begin to roll backwards by itself, i attempt to pump the breaks but it never works. i have to wait about 5-10 sec like there is a delay with my brake system when i first turn on my car. once the brakes finally kick in my car will either jolt in very drastic way like i slammed on my brakes even though my foot has been on the brakes the whole time or it will throttle back on its own like i'm pushing on the gas. i will never park on a hill in fear of my car just taking off on its own with no brakes to stop it. i have to literally turn on my car and wait for my breaks to kick in before i can reverse. it is very scary! it has happened to me once as well when i was driving and i coming to a stop, my brakes just went out and kicked back in on its own. i brought my car to a toyota dealership to have them check it out. they brought back a quote of $5,900! instead of trying one thing at a time they just wanted to replace everything at once. my car was right at the 5 year warranty mark but because i bought my car in guam they couldn't tell if my car was still under warranty and i would have to pay out of pocket. 2007 only 45000 miles with a 6 thousand dollar repair! that is insane let alone it is a hybrid feature & a safety issue! to me this should be covered under warranty no matter what! look online you can see hundreds of people complaining about this exact issue! people have even made websites for it! i'm very disappointed in toyota. i'm stuck with this car that i cant afford to fix! so i drive every day in what seems to me like a death trap! it's just not right. *tr
When applying the brake to reduce speed on one occasion the brake failed to slow the vehicle down. was only driving about 20 mph at the time. the brake began to function only after releasing the brake pedal and re-apply force. as stated above this has only occurred once. *tr
At higher speed brakes vibrate horribly when brake pedal is pushed and car is almost uncontrollable. now it happens all the time at any speeds over 40-50mph. *tr
Problem started with a clicking noise under the hood, near the engine and brakes that were crunching when slowing down or stopping. the clicking noise grew louder, happened more often and even continued after the car was turned off. took the car to dealer who told me it was the abs actuator. the dash lights were not on at this point and i continued to drive it. the lights on the dash appeared almost 6 weeks later when i stopped driving the car because it could be dangerous if i suddenly lost my brakes. checked with toyota headquarters who told me there was not a sufficient number of complaints for a recall. checked the internet for complaints and there were plenty of camry new car owners experiencing the same problem. filed a complaint with toyota and received a case number for reimbursement if the problem became a "recall" later on. this car was brought to dealership for every maintenance. this car is still not completely paid for. this "hybrid" car did not save me a penny in gas because of the abs part will cost me over $2k. these hybrids should come with disclaimers that batteries and electronic parts cost more than non-hybrid cars and maybe people will not buy them. the costs are outrageous! they should come with extended warranties. *tr
I have a 2007 camry hybrid. in july of 2012, the brake actuator broke in my car resulting in damage to my car. the brakes lost "power" and then would go in and out at will. i then spent $1,200.00 on a 3rd party company to replace this part, only to have it go out again in 6 months. the brakes function at will, and i have been quoted upwards of $3,000.00 by toyota to fix. i have been told that to have this fixed properly, it needs to be fixed by toyota as they have since fixed the part in question. i have never been notified of a recall concerning this issue, and toyota is very reluctant to drop price at all to help me fix, even considering this is the 2nd time to fix it, let alone pay for the damage to my car because of this part. insurance would not fix car because they considered damage was from a known issue. i have also been advised not to purchase used parts to replace as they will also fail, unless i pay $$$ to toyota for there corrected part to fix. as of today my brakes are still not fixed, and burning though brake pads in little as 2 months as a consequence. *tr
The check vsc system display came on with all the brake lights. basically the dash board lights up and with every warning light. a message on your display says "check vsc system". when you look it up in your manual it says - call toyota dealer right away. i was quoted an abs accumulator replacement at the cost of $3k. the car was under 6 year 75,000 extended warranty so every service and check was performed. when i reported flaky brake behavior (pulsing at a standstill and with the pulsating noises - it's like you are braking when you are idling) @ 78k toyota said nothing was wrong with my brakes. if a diagnostic code isn't appearing they can't really tell you have an issue. the car was just out of extended warranty. first thing i did was call the dealer service department. i was told it might just be the sensors and i could still drive it. i didn't listen to them and i'm glad - something just seemed very wrong with that advice - after all the brakes just seemed to be pulsing all the time and the car didn't brake the same way. pressing on the brake was very difficult - the brakes were basically operating manually with no power assist. there was no way i could ever stop quickly with brakes in this condition. i was also leaking brake fluid. we spoke to toyota in california and reported the problem. toyota said they wouldn't cover the part. the dealer said others had come in with the same problem so they knew it existed. we had a long discussion with the dealer manager. the real problem is at that time - the replacement part was the same part we had - so we had no choice but to take the same part with the same known problem. *tr
A few months before the check engine light came on, i started to notice some unusual noise from a part under the hood at the far right side, behind the head light. in the beginning it just hummed very loud when i stopped the car. then it became worse, i could hear the noise even during driving. i took the car to the dealership and they told me this was normal for hybrid car. i didn't believe them but couldn't argue with them because i know very little about cars. then one day in early june of 2012 the check engine light came on and the brake became soft. so i immediately took it to the dealership and this time i was told that a part called an actuator needs replacement. the cost would be over $3000. i was totally shocked and couldn't believe that a car with less than 70k on it and just out of the warranty would have this kind of problem. after some negotiations with the dealership they agreed to charge me about half of the price. toyota had a reputation for reliability and it was the reason that i bought the hybrid car. just a few months ago, in october 2011 the water pump was also broken, which cost me about $200 after some haggling about their warranty. obviously the actuator failure is a more serious problem and i've learned from other customers that they have had exactly the same problems (water pump and actuator) around the same mileage range. so this is clearly a common problem. i am filing this complaint in joining others to force toyota to address these problems. *tr
For the record / now repaired: persistent but sporadic delayed braking including noise and "check vsc system" warning light. finally replaced abs assembly and brake master reservoir under extended warranty ($2285.70). problem existed for over 6 months prior to resolution. multiple keys toyota, hamer toyota and independent auto repair inspections prior plus complaints to regional toyota service/complaint center. most of above documented with pictures of warning light. initially told no action could be taken unless problem could be duplicated at time of inspection. pictures of warning light were discounted. i presented internet complaints of same issue by others but disregarded as evidence by toyota. *tr
My camry encounters intermittent braking anomalies about once a month. when the break is applied, the braking system engages and the car beings to slow. after about 2 seconds of the car slowing the brake disengages and the car returns to coasting speed while the brake continues to be pressed. once the brake is pushed all the way to the floor, the brake re-engages aggressively after a 1/8th to 1/4th of a second delay. this occurs about once a month and is very dangerous, especially since sedans usually have children in the car. i have noticed this anomaly at various speeds under various breaking circumstances. i recently took my car to get serviced and don mcgill toyota in houston and they quoted $4,500 to replace the brake actuator. i am curious how many break actuator quotes have been provided and how many consumers elect to forgo the fix and continue to drive with this braking failure. *tr
Brakes fail when the "check vsc system" warning comes on along with other lights for tire pressure and brake light. at first the problem was intermittent and the brakes would work when the lights went out, but now the lights are on all of the time and the brakes work like manual brakes at times. the abs system does not work so driving on wet roads is dangerous. i feel there is a direct danger to my life and the public's safety when this vehicle is on the road. unfortunately, i do not have another vehicle that i can drive at the moment. *tr
I have a 2007 toyota camry hybrid and have been told the actuator in the abs system needs to be replaced. the cost of the part is over $2,200.00 and that doesn't include the labor to install it. after checking online, i am seeing where this seems to be an issue with toyota hybrid vehicles. my vehicle has about 85,000 miles on it and this seems like an extreme cost for anyone, including me, to have to replace on a vehicle as new as this. has there been any class-action suits/cases regarding this issue and do i have any recourse? *js *tr
Noticed strange sound coming from abs actuator after vehicle shut down. had it checked at toyota dealer and it was determined that the actuator was not holding pressure. the actuator was replaced at a cost to me of $2147.96. dealer contacted regional rep and subsequently determined that toyota would not cover the out of warranty work. i have since learned that toyota has issued an extended warranty on this item and will investigate getting a refund. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. the contact stated while driving 25 mph, he attempted to slow the vehicle down by applying the brakes, but the brake pedal went to the floor and every light on the instrument panel illuminated. the contact coasted to the side of the road and restarted the vehicle and the vehicle functioned properly. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they stated the brake actuator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 74,822.
At multiple regular service appointments at the toyota dealer, i reported unusual noises and a pulsing sensation that appeared to come from the brakes. the service people were not able to identify any issues. at 77000 miles, the dealer charged $400 for replacement of the master cylinder. after replacing the master cylinder, they determined that the abs actuator was failing and needed to be replaced -- at approximately $2400. of course, they also wanted to replace the front brake pads and water pump for another $700. i took the car to an independent (non-dealer) mechanic who confirmed the need to replace the abs actuator. the mechanic also advised that the part costs so much because it is specific to the hybrid vehicles (as opposed to non-hybrid camrys) -- used parts are not much cheaper as they are harder to find. a major failure in the braking system is of great concern. the brakes feel like they are becoming increasingly less responsive. it is absolutely absurd that so many people are experiencing issues with the same component of the braking system for the same model and year vehicle, yet toyota is not accepting responsibility for correcting this. toyota should be held accountable for this serious safety issue, or at least concede that it is an issue specific to hybrids and would be covered under the warranty period that covers the hybrid system. *jb

This is in follow up to incident odi id 10453342. after four separate brake failures and subsequent deliveries of the vehicle to the dealership, the problem was diagnosed as a faulty valve in the brake actuator. symptoms: accumulator pump running every 10 to 15 seconds when it should run only occasionally. dealership states that diagnostics revealed that no braking was available to the rear wheels at point of failure. the actuator was replaced under warranty at 55,218 miles. two weeks subsequent to the warranty repair, a fifth braking failure occurred (october 30, 2012). this time with a warning tone (not heard on previous failures). the vehicle was returned to the dealership again. dealership states the new actuator had failed due to a faulty voltage regulator. the actuator was replaced again under warranty. 23 days have passed since the last failure and the brakes are working normally. it seems that the brake actuator (the square aluminum module under the hood on the left hand side with many hydraulic lines coming out of it) is a weak component in the toyota 2007 camry hv. *tr
Driving on the road, everything was normal, then my entire dashboard lights up with all the warning signs. the internal car displays vsc maintenance required, and i'm thinking i didn't do anything. i just got the car this year. there shouldn't be a problem like this. the brakes were very hard to press down on to even brake. i fee like the brakes just stopped working or the brake itself would let me brake as normal. little shocked because i'd had crash into the driver in front of me. i started to drive very slow. then the lights and warning signs went away, and my brakes were back to normal. i felt like it was just a computer glitch and started to drive normally again. after i did, the car again went off with the warning signs on the dashboard and the vsc display was on again stating maintenance was required one again. so i started to drive slow once again. went to a repair shop they said my brakes were good, and that the car probably needed to get it check because of the hybrid system. this only happen during the summer. during the winter it goes off, to which i still felt like it was a computer glitch. went to the dealer recently and they said that my accumulator needs to be replace. i asked how does something like this occur. the mechanic stated somewhere in the lines of it's a man made part so it's can happen from time to time. but in my opinion, if i did everything like i was suppose to do, this should not happen. the total repair for the part is $1892! that's with labor included! seriously, why does a part that is so important to the car that expensive?! and why doesn't toyota report on this technical issue for their cars? *tr
Abs actuator failed in 2011, it was replaced by toyota for about $2,500 (out of my pocket). now, it is failing again and toyota is indicating that the actuator is now $3,200. the part warranty is 1 year, so if i want to fix the car i will have to pay the $3,200. no negotiation possible with them. *tr
The abs actuator failed and it was difficult to put the brakes. it cost me $2,400.00 in 2011. a few month ago the new part once again failed. i bought a used part and paid $1,100.00. toyota wanted me to pay $4,000.00. *tr
Under light braking, my 2007 toyota camry hybrid brakes will suddenly "let go". at that point, additional brake pressure is required to slow the vehicle. in heavy traffic this is dangerous. my local toyota service department advised me to increase my stopping distance to allow enough time to overcome the failure. they further suggested that a repair my be difficult as the problem is intermittent. an internet search suggests this is not unique to my vehicle. *tr
Just over a year ago, the "check vsc system" warning started coming on intermittently in my vehicle. it would go off again after a couple of vehicle starts and stops over time. the dealership ran a diagnostic, said everything was fine, and sent me along my way. after a few months it progressed to the "check vsc system", the red "brake" light, the little yellow triangle with the "!" and the stability control icon on staying on all the time. after a few more months the hydraulic brakes would lose power when the vehicle would start and this would be accompanied by a loud, constant "beep." it would last about a minute, power would return to the brakes. after a few more months the hydraulic brakes started losing power seemingly at random while i would be driving the vehicle. i can stop or decelerate, but i have to apply far more pressure to the brakes and my braking distance is greatly increased. it's a the dealership again now, and they are claiming that they have "never seen this problem before" and have "no idea how to fix it." *tr
Parked the auto, was in a meeting for 45 min. started the auto and "check vsc system" warning came on. tried driving and brakes were erratic, took to dealer, they said that they had to reprogram the computer because i had done something to the battery. not true. but it seemed that the problem was corrected as it performed ok. on may 29, 2014 i backed the car out of our garage and parked it on the street, about one hour later i started it to return it to the garage and the "check vsc system" came on and the brakes were very erratic. i then took the vehicle to the closest dealer and they checked it and informed me that the brake control computer needed to be replaced at accost of nearly $2000.00. as this appears to be a safety issue i feel that toyota should have recalled the vehicle and replaced the defective parts under a recall program. i feel very fortunate that the brake control computer did not fail while the car was moving. *tr
The vehicle experiences a brief loss of braking, particularly when braking system is being applied between two different road surfaces (smooth textured to an abrupt change such as a bump in the asphalt). *tr
We took our camry to a brake shop due to weak performance and loud screeching sound. after inspection the mechanic said that the rear brake pads were metal on metal and the fronts were not even broken in. this was most likely an indication of a problem with the abs system for which i would have to take the car to the dealer. we went straight to the dealer and they first refused to check it out then when we insisted, they took the car around the building and said there was no problem. all throughout the time we always had issues with stopping at a reasonable distance, the car losing control in wet weather and the feeling of always driving on ice. we learned later on that my 14 year old daughter was driving the car without a driver license and rear ended another vehicle. when asked, she said that she hit the breaks but the car didn't stop. we always thought that this was due to her inexperience but now we think that it was because of the problem with the breaks. about about a few month ago the abs, break, vsc lights intermittently started coming on and now they're on full time. i always suspected that there was a problem but the dealer said there was no problem and dismissed us and had no choice but to take their word for it. i just came across an article online that said ntsb was investigating a similar issue and wanted to offer our help if you need it. we still have our vehicle but it was repaired after the crash. my daughter had to go to the emergency room due to neck pain. we certainly didn't appreciate her stealing the car without a license but are thankful that she's ok. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. the contact stated that after starting the vehicle, there was a thumping and squeaking sound emitted from the vehicle. in addition, the abs light would intermittently illuminate. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the entire abs system would need to be replaced. the manufacturer had not been notified. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 140,000.
The posted date and miles of first incident is just a approximate figure but the dealership should have recorded the exact date and miles. a noise from under my hood was getting louder so i took it to the dealer and was told the noise was normal. a year or two later after taking it to different dealers for same issue my check vsc light came on while driving and my brakes failed. after the second failure during the week i took it to another toyota dealer and they said it was normal and safe. it was not. to date i haven't had the vsc error message occur but my brakes when reversing from park or when starting from a hill will initially lose braking power and roll a few inches before the brakes start working. is this really normal or safe? i don't want to believe what the dealership tells me anymore. please help. *tr
While driving all of a sudden multiple warning lights appeared and brake and stability controls were disabled. very difficult to stop. this happened before when car was new in 2007. took it to dealer and could not replicate. they told me if it happens again to shut off the car and then restart. that works but when it happens while driving, car is difficult to control. i have since had this happen recently 4 times in dec 2013. *tr
