I was driving my car by myself to home depot in la habra. the dashboard lights came on (i don't recall if there was an audible sound or not) saying there was a problem with the vsb brake system and i should get it checked out. because the warning scared me, i tapped on my brakes to slow down so i could figure out what it meant and what i should do. but my brakes didn't respond. i pushed on my brakes and realized it wasn't slowing my car down. i pulled into the center divider/turning lane so i could be out of the way. i figured the car would stop if i put it into "park", but it didn't. with my foot completely pressing the brake, and the car in "park" i turned into the home depot driveway at what felt like 30 mph and the car eventually slowed down since i wasn't accelerating anymore and was able to pull into a parking space. my husband called a mechanic he knows and he said to press the on/off switch a couple times to reset the computer or something. i did that and the car turned on again like nothing was wrong. i refused to drive the car anywhere because i was so scared. my husband came to pick me up and he drove it to toyota of whittier. they said nothing was wrong with the car, don't worry, and he wouldn't release it to me if it wasn't safe. we took it to longo toyota the following week. (before this incident, the brakes had started making "squelching" noises and would pulse when they were pressed for about a month or two prior) they had their "head" mechanic drive with my husband and the mechanic felt and heard the brake problems we described, but said he wouldn't fix it because it would take too much of his time and it wasn't worth it to them. we don't have documentation for this visit because we didn't have an appointment and they didn't take the car into their garage. about 2 weeks ago the brakes went out again when i started the car. *tr
Abs light is on. so far the car stops fine but makes a strange sound when applying brakes and vehicle vibrates when coming to a stop. antilock brakes do not seem to be working as the car does skid in wet conditions. *tr
While i was driving my check vsc light came on as well as many other brake lights on the instrument panel. i felt as though i had less control of the car at the time and my brakes would not work until i pressed them with severe force. after the first incident the lights would come on and off sporadically, each time we would lose the effectiveness of the brakes. in november the light came on as we were driving at speeds of about 65mph and has stayed on since. we have replaced the computer as well as the brake reservoir with no results. our car has been in and out of the toyota dealership and they cannot seem to fix the problem. *tr
I was driving home from work and brake to make a turn into the gate leading to my home and the brakes failed, even though the brake peddle was depressed to the floor. the car failed to slow or stop, thankfully there wasn't anyone in front of me or i would have definitely rear-ended them. the vehicle eventually stopped more than 400 meters away with me pumping the brakes! at the time vsc, abs & brake lights lit up the dash. i contacted toyota and inquired whether they were aware of this problem and they stated emphatically "no". after running diagnostic on the vehicle, i was informed that i had to pay $3000.00 to fix it. i couldn't afford to fix the car then so we used my daughters vehicle. last month i paid $3200.00 to have the car fixed! i also went online to find out if there were other people having this problem and found numerous complaints, including actual accidents and near misses like mine. there is definitely a problem with the 2007 camry hybrid braking system and toyota needs to issue a recall and fix the problem before lives are lost. they also need to refund those who have had to shell out this exorbitant amount of money to fix their defective part. brakes are a necessity and these are all accidents waiting to happen! toyota needs to held accountable ...yet again for their defective braking system. we definitely don't have to wait for people to die or accidents to happen before they fix the problem. *tr
Driving at approx 30 mph approaching a red light all warning lights go on in dashboard and bell sounds, went to put on brakes and could,nt slow down until i applied heavy pressure to brakes, and finally stopped. this happens not all the time but often enough to be dangerous, and not being able to stop quick. *tr
Parking brake light came on first, all of the sudden all the lights on the dashboard came on. when i tried to brake to pull over, the brakes would not work. i had to push in on the brakes even harder. when i turned off the car, started it back up all lights were off. the car brakes were working once more. took the car to temecula dealership. dealership said nothing was wrong, charged $1,500 for maintenance. two months later, after driving my car through the mountains every weekend, the brakes repeat the previous incident. the brakes would not work as i was approaching an intersection. the dealership stated there never was a problem with the brakes before the december incident. i spoke with the manager of the dealership regarding both incidents to no avail. unfortunately, the toyota people had no regard for my safety. i was allowed to drive the car for two months after i took the car in for repairs. on december 11, 2013 the brake problem was discover. we would be charge $3,000 dollars for brake repairs. we would have to have pay a total of $4,500. i have been a toyota customer for thirty years. i will never buy toyota again. total disregard for customer safety, it's all about $$$. *tr
Knocking noise, almost like a door closing, lived with it. took the car to the toyota dealership, december 11 to be told my abs module was quote "failing" and it would cost $2,900.00 to replace it. also told "it's ok to drive without abs module". i was shocked at the number of failures that i see reported - great disappointment that toyota has chosen not to address what appears to be an obvious flaw. *tr
Braking while driving or when in park mode a knocking sound is heard; braking uneven but (pulsating) however currently there are no issues with coming to a stop. no warning lights on; had it seen by toyota dealer - no problems identified with diagnostics; recommended changing brake pads, which did not resolve the problem, 2 additional visits to dealership - and after a cost of over $500 today they mentioned that it was the actuator and would take an additional $3244.50 to replace. sooner or later the brakes were likely to fail making it unsafe, called toyota but was told there was no recall or problems with the 2007 camry hybrid models - but the nhtsa website has multiple similar posts. hope to get some meaningful response from toyota. will come back and update as i have some feedback from the company. *tr
I have a 2007 toyota camry hybrid that started showing "check vsc system" on the multifunction display in early october of 2013. by the end of that moth it became a permanent item on the display. the computer indicates a c1391 error. after testing the actuator assembly was deemed defective. i have discontinued driving this vehicle after an incident in rainy weather while the "check vsc system" was displayed on the multifunction display. i was on the interstate traveling approximately 60 mph in light rain. traffic started slowing ahead so i tried to apply the brakes, but they did not respond immediately. after an approximately 2 second delay they did respond, but it was abruptly and caused the car to start skidding. without immediate and substantial driver input the vehicle would have been in an out-of-control situation. the car has remained parked since that incident for fear it is too dangerous to drive without functioning brakes. the operation of the brakes on this vehicle in an abs failure mode is dangerous and potentially deadly. i have driven plenty of vehicles that were not equipped with abs, and none of those vehicle ever exhibited the dangerous behaviors this vehicle exhibits with a failed component. since the brakes on a vehicle are relied upon in emergency situations all components in that system should be designed to fail in a safe manner leaving a vehicle that is still safe to drive. further toyota is aware that select years of this vehicle have a manufacturing defect or faulty design since the actuator was redesigned a couple years after this vehicle was first introduced into the market. i ask that the nhtsa investigate the safety of this vehicle model and year to determine the safety of these vehicles during an abs/vsc component failure. *tr
I was turning into my office parking lot when my "check vsc system", brake light, stability control light, etc came on. immediately, my brakes were practically gone and fortunately nobody was coming the other direction or i wouldn't have been able to stop. over the next few months, this same thing happened every few days, mostly when driving around 50mph but it would go away and be back to normal, usually within a few minutes. eventually, the lights came on and this time stayed on (they've been on for a few weeks now), but the brakes seem to be working fine. however, i'm scared that they will give out. i've done some research on this and i believe there is already an investigation underway. i just wanted to add my name/complaint to the list. this is absolutely a safety hazard that will result in deaths if not recalled. i've read that some people who have had this fixed at the dealership or a repair shop are paying around $3000 dollars to have it fixed. i don't have $3000 dollars to spend on something that toyota should take care of themselves because of a flaw in their car's design. i don't have the money to spend, but i also don't want to die! please do something about this. *tr
I was only driving my vehicle about a mile when it first happened. i was approaching a stop light and attempted to apply the brakes. nothing happened. the steering went out and the brakes felt like they weren't catching. thankfully, i was only going about 25-30 mph, and had enough space to stop before hitting another car that was stopped at the light. i looked at the dashboard display and noticed something that read, "check vsc system". there was also a warning triangle. the camry manual instructed us to bring it to the dealership - but i can't afford that. the next day, it worked fine. a few weeks later, the incident happened again while i was exiting the highway and coming to a red light. i was decelerating from about 65 mph to a full stop and felt the brakes give again and the steering was difficult. i was able to pull over, turn off the car, and restart and it was fine again. i had the brake pads changed, but don't understand what is happening. we didn't have the problem for several months. but now it feels like the brakes want to give when i am idling in traffic. while my foot is on the brake, the car will squeak and subtly jerk forward like the brakes are about to give up the ghost. it's really scary, but i can't afford another car at this time. i've looked into the vsc system and don't understand why that would intermittently affect my braking and steering ability. *tr
Vsc lights plus all warning lights come on. bell sounds and brakes essentially fail. toyota quoted $2800.00. this issue was reported prior to my extended warranty expiring however the issue was not diagnosed by toyota until after expiration of the warranty. this is a very dangerous issue that should be corrected free of charge. *tr
While driving at about 40mph, the brake light and "check vsc system" and "abs" warning lights all came on simultaneously. the brakes were very stiff and difficult to engage as i tried to stop for a traffic light coming up. i had to literally stand on the brakes to avoid colliding with the car in front of me. it was very scary! i turned around and drove straight home, but all lights went off and the brakes returned to normal. i could not duplicate the problem and we dismissed it as a fluke. then it happened a week later. this time the warning lights were on when i started the car at home. the brakes then reengaged while i was backing out of my driveway. as i put the car in reverse, i heard a loud bang/thunk. i thought i hit something but there was nothing there when i got out to look. that's when i noticed all warning lights had gone out and my brakes were normal again. i took my car to liberty toyota in colorado springs where they ran a diagnostic and said i needed a new brake switch, which cost me $180. three weeks later the same problem was back with the warning lights coming on intermittently. i learned to drive with manual brakes for a few weeks and to just go much slower because i needed my car. i noticed the same loud clunking sound any time the brakes would reengage (usually when i was idling or going very slowly, getting ready to accelerate) and the warning lights would go out. i took my car back to toyota yesterday and now they tell me that it's probably the actuator, which will cost me about $3,000! plus my "check hybrid system" warning light came on and they said that one cell in my battery is bad. i need a new battery, which runs $4,000! what a headache! *tr
Brake alert lights appeared on dash on night of 9/5/14 upon starting the vehicle. read codes in owner's manual, and drove few blocks to home at slow speed (15 mph). on saturday morning, 9/6/14, the incident occurred again when i was driving at about 25-30 miles per hour. not only did the alert lights appear, but the brakes "bled" through to the floor, and it felt as if the car accelerated. brakes worked only after pumping the brake pedal. i had the vehicle towed to service center. after diagnostics and driving for 90 miles over 4 days, the incident could not be replicated, nor did any codes appear on the computer. vehicle was released after paying diagnostic fees. the incident occurred again on 10/2/14: brake lights appeared on dash, the car felt it was accelerating, and the brakes failed temporarily. my foot bled through, i pumped the pedal before brakes began to work. the vehicle was towed to dealership. again, diagnostics did not reveal codes nor was the incident able to be replicated. dealership replaced the brake fluid reservoir according to toyota corporate directions. found info online that nhtsa cited 59 complaints of brake failure for 2007-08 camry hybrids. reported these incidents to toyota corporate, who assigned a case no. have not heard from corporate case mgr. yet, but expect to by monday, 10/06/14. corporate said they do not offer a loaner vehicle while this is being addressed, but to ask dealership. dealership said they could not provide a loaner vehicle. *tr
As i was on a 2-hour drive to meet my brothers for the appointment to enter my elderly mother into assisted living all the warning lights on my dash lit up. i was afraid to continue so i stopped at the dealership to see if it was safe to keep going. they said it was the brake filter reservoir assembly and that i should not continue on the trip until it was replaced. they did replace it at no cost. i was unable to make it to my mother's assisted living appointment, leaving my brothers "holding the bag." one month later, on october 9, 2014, i was again traveling at 55 mph when all of the brake warning lights lit up again. since i was not far from home i turned around and parked my car in the driveway until i could make an appointment with the dealership. upon examination at the dealership, i was told that it was the brake actuator assembly. they said that the diagnostic codes that came up were not even something they had seen before and they had to get them interpreted by toyota. their explanation was that the "brains" of the braking system had gone bad and it would be a very costly expense. they did work with me, accepted a coupon that i had, copped a loaner vehicle, and replaced the actuator at a cost of $1755.27. now i get a letter in the mail saying that there is a "warranty enhancement program." when i called the dealership to ask about reimbursement for these charges i was told i would need to take my vehicle in again for an inspection. since it's an hour drive to the dealership and it seems it's becoming an almost monthly trip for something or other, i'm not a happy camper. toyota needs to get it together!!! *tr
I was shock to take my car in to fix my brake actuator. i almost got into an accident and killed someone on the road. when i took my car in they charge me $2900. wth! please recall this part toyota so you can pay me back. theirs too much people paying to fix this! we will get you guys! *tr
In late 3q 2013 we began to hear a common sound from our 2007 camry hybrid go from occasional to chronic: a 5-10 second hum from the front right, like a pump pressurizing a chamber. for the first few years we owned the car it would happen periodically; now it's happening every 5-10 seconds when the car is running and even when it's not, both before we start it (after opening the door) and for 10-15 minutes after it's been turned off. sometimes we hear a sound like a bark or chirp; it started about the same time as the pressurization frequency increased. i'd also noticed an occasional throbbing of the brakes while the car was at rest. i've noticed no decline in performance, either from the engine or the hybrid system, and no issues with braking on the road. once i've gotten the dreaded "check vsc system" error, but it cleared itself after a day. i took it into a toyota dealership in december and tried to explain the problem; they thought it was a fan belt, and tightened the belts. that didn't solve the problem. i finally took it back in today, and the lead tech sat down with me in the car - he knew what it was almost immediately. they investigated, confirmed the issue, and informed me it would be $3100+ in parts and labor. i asked what they could do, given that there's an active nhtsa investigation and rumors of a class action lawsuit, and they came down to $2800. to their credit, the dealership has been professional, responsive, courteous and sympathetic. still, after evaluating the replacement cost, the car's value, and our current finances, we're going to have to continue to drive the car daily despite the threat of a serious braking system failure. not good. *tr
My brake actuator has failed costing me $3000 to repair. when i was turning the corner the brake failed almost causing a huge accident. i called toyota for help. no one is helping me. im stuck with teh cost and very shocked with the lives i put in danger. tt
After starting the vehicle and putting it in drive, i take my foot off the brake and the car lurches forward several yards, a bunch of warning lights flash on and the "check vsc system" message comes up (only on this last time). the brakes do not respond and steering is very difficult. then after a few seconds, all the warning lights go off and everything is fine. this has happened 4 times. i'm grateful it's only occurred in parking lots but after reading about this happening to others, i'm very afraid this will happen at higher speeds. the dealership can't replicate my experience so they say everything is fine. when i ask about actuator issues that others have had, they deny any knowledge of a problem. *tr
The "check vsc system" light came on as well as the parking brake symbol, tire stability symbol, etc. the brake pressure has been reduced. i took it to the dealership and they said i have to replace the abs actuator with a cost of $3300 plus. *tr
While driving home, four lights lit up on my dashboard and the check vsc system warning appeared as well. there was nothing noticeable that happened so i drove on to the house. only thing i noticed the next morning was that the brake pedal kicked back towards me when i started the car. brakes appeared to work fine. took the car into my toyota dealer (where i purchased it new in november of 2006). they checked it and found out that the abs actuator needed to be replaced. price for the part was $2500. labor was $118. car was fixed in two days. fortunately i had an extended warranty that covered all but $100 so i felt very lucky. my main intention on submitting this is to find out why toyota hasn't issued a recall on this part. i've read (in the toyotanation forum online) about many drivers who have had this problem at less than 65,000 miles; mine occurred at 82,600 miles. and the price of the part is astonishing. so my personal experience was fine. i didn't notice any braking issues but would like to submit this as another owner who experienced this same issue. expensive for many, but i was lucky to have the warranty. ...updated 08/16/13 *bf *tr
The brake actuator malfunctioned and the brakes began pulsating and groaning when applied. this happened on the baltimore washington parkway. braking power was greatly reduced and i had to coast to a stop in the shoulder of the highway and slowly make my way to an exit ramp as it was too unsafe to continue driving at speed and i was worried that the car was a danger to myself and other drivers in that condition. the brakes would pulsate/groan whenever the car was in drive and they were applied. when i took the car to a toyota dealer for servicing two days later (i did not drive the car at all in the interim), they told me that there was a problem with the actuator and that it would need to be replaced. this cost $2156. i had replaced the brake rotors, pads, and had a brake fluid flush completed just 2 months before in this vehicle. from the documents on file with nhtsa, my incident appears to be a common problem with this make/model/year car. as this could have easily caused an accident, i believe toyota should be responsible for ensuring that the actuator is recalled and that others are not put into the same, potentially dangerous, situation. *tr
Check vsc system error message caused by a bad abs actuator. now the brakes are not working. you push on the brakes and the car will not stop. you have to push hard on the brakes and hope the car will eventually stop. i did some research and it seems that this is a common issue. toyota needs to recall and pay to have this fixed. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would make a loud thumping sound. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the abs module actuator assembly was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not repaired. the failure mileage was 108,000 and the current mileage was 108,952.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 camera hybrid. the contact stated while driving 30 mph the brakes were applied and they malfunctioned. the brake lights illuminated but the brakes was slow to apply. the contact took the vehicle to a dealer for a diagnostic test but did not find any defect codes. the dealer replaced the rear brake but that did not remedy the braking defect. the failure mileage was 73,305. updated 03/05/14*lj
we owned this toyota camry hybrid since 10/20/2012. this morning about 6:10am, my wife was driving to a speed of 40mph on university drive north bound. she was passing a pothole which had stand water. she slightly press the brakes, but when she came out of the pothole, the car instead of slow down, went "crazy" to a speed of 60 mph. my wife keep the brakes pressed but the car was out of control; car went across from east to west, jumping two lines. when the car was close to hit the median, she steer it,to cross in the middle then went crazy south bond, where she was coming from.the camry final stopped after about 50 seconds, she was against the incoming traffic.the point is that this car instead of stop when the brakes are applied, takes more speed. thank you. *tr
While driving, the vsc light, check engine light , brake light, and another light all came on. no apparent problems at operating speed, but at lower speeds i can feel pulsating in the brakes and on low speed turns the steering wheel pulsates a little. i am concerned that the brakes will fail. repair estimate from the dealer is far more than we can afford. my research indicates that this is a common problem with the camry hybrid. i believe this deserves a recall. *tr
While driving on the highway, the vsc check system, abs, hazards, and warning lights came on. basically, my dashboard lit up. the car also started to lose braking power, so i pulled over. i tried to turn off and restart the engine 3 times, but all the lights were still there. i had an event to attend, and drove my car in fear. after finally able to take the car to run diagnostics at the dealer, i was quoted $3000 to replace a faulty brake accumulator. i am also aware that this issue is more common, especially on toyota camry hybrids around 5 years old. it is ridiculous to have to pay 10% of my car's original price, since it is a widespread safety hazard. it is beyond coincidence that toyota camry hybrids are experiencing this problem. *tr
Coming to a street stop at 15 mph abs lights and some other came on. it was very hard to stop the vehicle even with all possible pressure on pedal. *tr
After hearing lots of noises from the brake accumulator for months, the brakes failed while driving. check vsc warning, brake lights, abs warning, and other brake related warning lights came on. during braking the brakes released, and quite excessive pressure was required to stop the car and avoid a crash. testing the system showed fault code c1391 (abnormal leak of accumulator pressure). i cleared the fault, but the next day the problem reappeared. we had the system bled, but once again the problem reappeared. braking action intermittent with brakes releasing at times, and at other times locking up. a very unsafe proposition. the entire system had to be replaced at a cost in excess of $3,000. this is 10% of the cost of the car for a problem that is obviously a widespread safety issue for this vehicle based on the number of complaints filed. i cannot imagine that this has not or will not lead to fatal accidents. *tr
While driving on a busy highway at 70mph, the vsc check system, abs, hazards, and warning lights came on. i had to pull over to the median to avoid hitting the car in front of me. the car gradually came to a stop, and i had it towed to a dealer. it was diagnosed as the abs actuator, and their estimate to replace it was $3400. this is a serious safety concern. i called toyota corporate and they would not help pay for the repair. *tr
The vehicle's warning lights came on and the warning "check vsc system" came on. the brakes discontinued working properly and had to be pressed very hard to make the vehicle stop. now, the lights stay on and two different toyota dealerships have written that the brake actuator system is faulty and needs to be replaced at cost of $3,000. in checking further, i found that other toyota camry hybrid owners of the same vehicle and year (2007) have had the same problem and that the nhtsa is investigating according to an los angeles times article published january 27, 2014. i would like to add my name to the list of complainants. i have contacted toyota and they are not taking responsibility for repairing this part when it is obviously a vehicle defect affecting possibly 30,000 camry hybrids. *tr
About 2 months ago i noticed a notice when i depressed my brakes, even what the car was stopped, that there was a squeaking or thumping noise coming from the front of the car. i took to the toyota service center last month for a 5000 mile service and they couldn't get it to happen. it became more frequent and so i took it in last week and they were able to recreate the problem. they bled the brake lines which did not fix it and so they told me there is an internal leak in the abs actuator and the part was $2700 and total with labor would be $3100. i was looking at other options and today when driving the car would hesitate when starting to accelerate from a stop and then the vsc system check and hybrid system check warnings came on and i heard a loud hissing/fan-like noise from behind the rear seat where the hybrid battery is located. after looking online i found that this issue is very common and many complaints have been filed by owners of the 2007 model year and later camry hybrid with mileage levels in the 50k to 80k range. in addition, there is a squishiness in the brakes and at one point when i applied the brakes the car continued to move forward. i have read online about others with this problem where their brakes failed while driving and had to pull over to the side of the road to prevent having an accident. this needs to be looked into. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hb. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle exhibited a sudden and intermittent loss in braking assist, delayed braking and an increase in brake pedal effort. all of the warning indicators on the instrument panel illuminated, including the check vsc warning light. on another occasion the contact was in traffic and when the brakes were applied, there was an abnormal increase in braking distance that caused the contact to crash into a preceding vehicle. there were no injuries and a police report was not filed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer multiples times but the failure was unable to be duplicated. the manufacture was made aware of the failure but declined to provide an alternative remedy. the contact was aware that the vehicle was under investigation for the same braking system type of failure (nhtsa action number: pe14001). the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 88,000.
In 2012, there was some noise coming from the rear brakes. in april 2013, the brake lights turned on. when we pressed on the brakes, brakes were not stopping. we heard abnormal grinding metallic noise from rear brakes. we took the 2007 camry hybrid to the dealer. they said that the rear brake pads had worn out abnormally fast. they couldn't pinpoint the problem. after 9 months, the brakes were not stopping again, the abnormal metallic noise came back, the rear brake pads wore out prematurely fast again. the dealer told us the brake actuator needs to be replaced, which would cost $3300 to repair the defect. there are already 118 complaints regarding this brake failure. toyota needs to take responsibility before there are more serious accidents. please recall these brake part failures for everyone's safety. *tr
While driving and stopping, all the engine lights and "check vsc" came on and it appeared that my brakes failed. it was as if my car shut completely off; however, it was still on and i had manual brakes that i had to push very hard to use. this is intermittent and has occurred about 6 times in total. it has been serviced 3 times regarding this incident, one of which they just let me go and said they couldn't figure it out. the last time they determined they "think" it is the brake actuator. after doing my own research on line, it appears there are many others who have had this same issue. it appears the part has been faulty for some time and i was unaware of it. it has been making noises for several years that i thought were normal; but i guess they were not. i believe mine has taken so long to finally fail because most of the life of the car has been driven on the freeway with little breaking. while my car is out of warranty, i do not feel i should have to pay for a part that 1) shouldn't be failing at this juncture and 2) has apparently been in the process of failing while my car was in warranty. it's like a heart attack...you don't know you have a problem until the failure occurs. i've almost crashed into people and i've read other accounts where they have. i believe toyota should recall these parts! note i've also received service faithfully during the life of the car. *tr
Started the vehicle, put it into reverse to back out of the driveway as i brake at the end of the driveway the dashboard lit up with warning lights- first just the brake warning light in orange but then the master warning light, electronically controlled brake system, abs and slip indicator all illuminated and the check vsc system message appears. this problem has occurred multiple times - especially prevalent during cold weather. in my driveway the problem is frustrating but on the road it is downright dangerous. the brakes become very difficult to use. i've driven it to the mechanic multiple times but the warning lights disappear and the brakes start functioning properly. luckily one time i arrived with all the warning lights still illuminated. according to the mechanic there are no problem codes recorded making it challenging to determine the source of the problem. he suspects it is the abs brake actuator but cannot guarantee replacing it will solve the problem and the repair is almost $3,000. *tr
The vehicle had been for the past weeks with a pulsating noise under the hood, specially at stops waiting for a red light. you can feel the pulsation on the pedal when you depress the brake pedal. the noise gets louder the harder you press the pedal and the car seems like its trying to move forward on its own. no problem lights were on the control panel until it reached 87,225. after that i had the abs, brake, warning, vst lights all on with the message of check vst on the lcd of the control panel. took the car to the dealer and after inspection they determined that the abs actuator module had to be replaced. the quote was for $2,600!!!!! i started searching online and found out several other camry owners had the same problem. i'm filing the complaint because this is a very critical component in terms of safety and it is failing at a very low mileage (under 100k) and sometimes even under 60k. also the cost of repair is so high you have no choice but to increase the financial burden because it is a part that it is critical for the car's safety operation. i would never drive a car with brake problems. please investigate this issue. *tr updated 08/15/13*lj
Car was parked. turned on ignition and saw multiple waening lights. drove to dealer for repairs and was told brake actuator assembly needs to exchanged. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. the contact stated that the front brakes were emitting a loud noise intermittently and the abs sensor illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the technician was unable to neither replicate nor diagnose the failure. in a different occasion, the contact stated that while traveling at an unknown speed, the brake pedal was applied and the brakes failed to engage. the contact mentioned that all of the sensors illuminated on the instrument panel and after several attempts the vehicle finally came to a complete stop. the vehicle was towed from the contacts residence to another authorized dealer who replaced the front brakes. the failure recurred and the authorized dealer later indicated that the abs modulator assembly and the skid control ecu needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure several times to no avail. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
I was driving down the freeway when all of the warning lights on the dash lit up on my 2007 toyota camry hybrid with 67k miles and the brake pedal felt strange. i pulled over and turned off the car. restarted it, just to find the that the warning lights were still on, and that the brake pedal still felt strange/different. i then drove home very slowly and called the dealer. this is the same dealer that has done all the scheduled maintenance. the dealer diagnosed it as an abs brake accumulator hydraulic part that cost over $2500. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to properly respond to deceleration attempts. the contact indicated that the vehicle stability control, brakes failed, and abs failed lights illuminated during the incident. the vehicle was taken to the dealer multiple times but the defect could not be diagnosed. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the abs actuator was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 110,000.
The vsc light appeared & the car lost brakes. like others, i have experienced failure of the brake actuator / boost accumulator. although the brakes work to a degree, there is no boost. despite application of my maximum effort to depress the brake pedal, stopping distances are very long and stopping speeds are very slow. i consider the car dangerous to drive & has been shelved pending nhtsa review. reports are that toyota has known of this problem & has refused to address it nhtsa should require that toyota replace this part at no cost to the consumer in view of toyotas unconscionable behavior. *tr
There is a leak in the abs accumulator that causes my brakes to pulse and a alarm to sound, which is a loud whining noise. i have had my rotors and brake pads replaces but that did not resolve the issue, my mechanic thinks is it the accumulator, which cost 1800 dollars just for the part. i have researched and seen hundreds of complaints about this part online. i can't afford to pay 2k for a repair at this time and i am afraid to drive my car but i have no choice due to my work and need to commute. *tr update 6/27/2013: the problem is persistent now and the brake pedal pulses as if it is pushing back when step down on it, it definitely affects my breaking distance. i have to start breaking much sooner than normal. vehicle has not been repaired as the cost actually has been quoted by dch toyota of oxnard service department on 6/8/13 for $3,250.00 to replace abs actuator system. part was 2399.00 alone. updated 7/31/13 *cn
My brake accumulator pump started to fail on my 2007 toyota camry hybrid. this is a well documented weakness on these cars. there is hundreds of posts online with frustrated owners having this part fail (prius and camry hybrid), and toyota claim there is no problem with it; yet when it is replaced, they replace the part with a re-designed and different part! the cost of the part alone is $1900+ and installed by the dealer it is about $2700! this part is also unique to the hybrid braking system on this car, yet it is "not covered" by the hybrid system 10 year 100k mile warranty. this is an extreme safety risk as i have seen other posters have their brakes fail at high speeds due to this issue. the water pump is also notorious for failure on this car at low mileage and no recall has been issued to date. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 camry hybrid. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, all of the warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel as the brakes failed. the contact had to coast to the shoulder to stop the vehicle. the contact shut off the vehicle and restarted. once the vehicle was restarted, the vehicle independently reset. the contact was able to drive the vehicle for an additional week without incident however, the failure recurred. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection of the brakes where the dealer advised that the braking system was working as designed. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000. the vin was not available. *tr

My wife and i were driving in our car when all of a sudden the svc warning light came on and our brakes became much less responsive. we stopped the car. turned it on and off and then the warning light turned off. over time the svc warning light and brake malfunction became more frequent and then finally became permanent. we were quoted from toyota about $3000 to fix the part. we ended up buying the part offline and having our mechanic install it. *tr
Brakes went to the floor and i coasted to a stop. i held my foot on the brake pedal to the floor. it was a light rain on a concrete road. the dash board lite up with a warning check vsc system. it only happen that one time. as i drove off after the event, i heard an unfamiliar sound and i cautiously drove home. the brake pedal was working normal again. the dash board warning sign went out as i took my foot off the brake and proceeded forward. since that one event i have never had another incident. in the usa today on 1/28/14 i read the article about the power-assist brakes in 2007 & 2008 camry hybrids. after discussing the article with my family (who also have the same vehicle); they reported no such incident. on their advise, i took my car to my toyota dealer and they were not able to detect or duplicate the same braking event. it was test driven and computer system checked. it's in my car history and the dealer asked me to notify you for reference. *tr
This problem started small .. became more frequent and increasingly dangerous. first incident problem occurred while driving on the highway. brake warning light, abs warning and vehicle stability warning appeared in the drivers message center. in each instance breaking was not the cause of the warning displays. the displays were intermittent and have now become a permanent fixture. often adding intermittent moaning noises from the front left wheel while brake is deployed and vehicle is stopped. when braking at times, there was no response, slow response or additional pressure is required to begin to slow the vehicle. speeds are all varied. city driving and freeway speed. in each condition, warnings or braking problems would occur. thus far no failure to the system has been diagnosed.. when urgent braking is required, there is no abs response. front left and right rear are most effected. each producing abnormal amounts of brake dust. brake pads are replaced frequently due to the pads constantly being deployed now. ruining fuel efficiency. requiring too. frequent repairs for normal usage. i implore the nhtsa to inquire on these safety mechanical defects. *tr
