Problems with 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 122 209 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

The brake accumulator cycles continuously and pulses when depressed making a distinct howling noise even when stopped. the brake assist intermittently pulses and makes braking more difficult and increasing stopping distance. this part is specific to the regenerative braking as part of the hybrid system. *tr

The check vsc light came on in december. the dealer could not find anything wrong. the warning light came on again on 1/21/14. the dealer said that the brake accumulator was defective and could result in a failure of the abs. it was replaced at a cost of more than $3000. i am a careful driver and have never had the abs engage on this car, so something is not right when such a key (and expensive) part fails. this should be recalled. *tr

'check vsc system' along with brake light warning, abs warning, and pretty much every other warning light possible came on my 2007 camry hybrid in january 2014. the brakes began to bark like a dog when pressed and frequently the brakes would give out and i would have to put the pedal to the floor to stop the car. the car was unsafe to drive so i took it to the toyota dealer and was quoted 3900 dollars to fix the issue. it seems to be a widespread issue and toyota needs to take care of the issue, but they have not. *tr

Approximately 3 weeks ago the "check vsc system" warning came on in our 2007 camry hybrid. we noticed no affect to the driving of the car, and since the owners manual said almost nothing about this warning (simply said to take it to dealer), we drove the car as usual. we then had an incident where, approaching a stop sign, the brakes failed to work at first: i had to pump the brakes 3+ times in order to make them engage. we then took it to a toyota dealership to have a diagnosis. after spending $116 on a diagnostic (only way they would tell us the root cause) we learned that there is an actuator failure which has a repair cost of over $3000. upon receiving this information we investigated the vsc issue online and discovered that this is a very common problem for camry hybrids. our camry is a little over 5 years old and only has 57,950 miles. it is absolutely unacceptable that we should have to replace this very expensive part on a car with this few miles. given the high frequency of complaints regarding the vsc failure it is our opinion toyota should take the blame for their faulty part and cover the cost of the repair. *tr

My wife was driving from work as she was approaching a stop light she hit the brakes to stop. to her surprise almost all the lights on the dashboard came on simultaneously. and there was no brakes so instead of hitting the car in front of her she went over the curve to avoid hitting the car. it cost us a rim and tire. i m just glad she or someone else wasn't injured. since then my wife refuses to drive the car never again she told me and wished me good luck. i have drove the car myself and have experience the same issue where all the abs and brake lights come on and there's total loss of brakes. i have taken the vehicle to the mechanic and told me is the abs actuator pump that goes bad without notice. he told me its not the first time a customer has came in with this problem on the 2007 and 2008. i guess they change something on abs pumps on the 2009 and newer vehicles that's why they don't have this problem. i just hope the nhtsa looks into this defect part before somebody gets hurt or kill. its a serious problem especially when your dealing with vehicle brakes not functioning the way there suppose to that we all depend on. the reason why toyota haven't done a voluntary recall is because of the cost of the abs actuator it's expansive at around 2,500 to 3,000 they know they have a problem in there hands. but if they refuse to acknowledge this problem is going to cost them more if somebody gets seriously hurt or kill . *tt

While driving suddenly all light up on the dsh including brakes check vsc red triangle light abs trac light, followed by complete brake failure at red light had to run the light luckily no traffic and accident was avoided few seconds later all lights disappeared and brakes came back to normal, vent to a shop to see that the issue was there no problem found and was told everything works as it should no error codes found, days later same problem happened complete brake failure followed by resuming to normal and once again mechanics did not find any issues... went online fount out it was a very common problem which im surprised toyota mechanics know nothing about, the issue seems to be with brake actuator which costs about $2000, finally after few months i was able to arrive at the shop with all the lights still lit up and they finally have confirmed that in dead the problem is the brake actuator, however part was replaced with dame part number and when i asked if the part was updated due to massive premature failure of these units i was told it was not, this needs to be addressed before people start dieing. *tr

There was a failure of the brake actuator which caused the brakes to lock up and various indicators of failure to register. fortunately i noticed the problem while backing out of my garage and so there was no accident. the brake system warning light and the vehicle stability control both lit up. it cost more than $3000 to repair the vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. the contact stated it was difficult to engage the brakes and when the brake pedal was depressed it vibrated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 95,000.

I have a 2007 toyota camry hybrid with ~64k miles on it. on 12-jan-2014, as i was approaching a stoplight, i stepped on the brake pedal and it was like nothing happened. the regenerative braking engaged, but the physical brakes did not. i was unable to stop the car before striking the suv ahead of me. no one was injured. however damage to my vehicle was over $3k. two days later (14-jan-2014) i experienced the same loss of braking, fortunately without accident or injury. *tr

While driving to work on friday 1/10/14 my brake, abs, check vsc and red warning lights turned on. i took it to the dealer and it was diagnosed as my abs actuator having a leak and needing to be replaced for almost $3500. this is ridiculous if this many people are having the same issue regarding the same part on the same exact vehicle. this is not what i expected when i purchased a toyota and this may be my last. *tr

While driving to work on 1/10 the brake, abs, check vsc system and red warning light came on. when taken to the dealer it was diagnosed as my abs actuator pump leaking and bleeding and needing to be replaced. not only is this an expensive repair but my power braking was gone. this is dangerous when you drive on a major highway everyday and night at speeds of 60+. this is disappointing for toyota and disappointing that it has not been recalled yet. apparently someone needs to be injured badly in order for it to be a problem. *tr

Was driving about 40 mph when all of a sudden the "check vsc system" lit up as well as the brake, and multiple others lights came on. my first instinct was to hit the brakes, which went all the way to the floor. i had to cross over 3 lanes of traffic in order to try to get to a side road. this has happened several times since then. the first incident, i called performance toyota in memphis, tenn. i slowly drove it there. they drove it for 20 miles, charged me $126.00, and told me nothing was wrong, and that i must have hit a bump causing the 3 of the tires to spin. i don't recall hitting any bumps.they checked my brakes, which were replaced less than a year ago, and said they were in great shape and i was safe taking it on the road. told them i was suppose to go out of town the next day. the second time it happened, @ 1 week later, my husband was driving it. i called performance toyota to report it and was told to bring it in when all the lights are lit up. i am too scared to drive this car! *tr

Approx mid january 2014 while going down the hwy about 40 miles from home my vsc light came on and i lost almost all the use of my brakes, which really frighten me. i am single and have no family around to help. i got off the hwy and went very slow. the light went off before i got home and i didn't have another problem with it until dec 2014 while going to work. the light came on and off twice before i got to work and i lost brakes use. then it happen again first week jan. 2015. it has happen twice recently and i'm getting worried about driving the car. you never know when it might happen and it is very dangerous. i looked it up on the internet and saw quite a few other people were having the same problem. i can't afford to have it fixed. i hope your investigation can help correct this problem before someone get hurt or worse killed. i has to be a defect in the vehicle if this many people are having this problem. thank you for your time. *tr

While driving at a low rate of speed the brake light on my dashboard came on and a warning 'check vsc' along with other lights on my dashboard all came on and the brakes no longer worked as usual. i had to apply considerable pressure to the brake pedal and was able to coast on to a side street. the lights on my dashboard all went off and the car then functioned as normal. i drove to the store i was going to went in for about 15 minutes then returned to my vehicle. as i was backing out of my parking spot the same issue as stated above happened again. i drove the car straight to price leblanc toyota, my dealership. without turning the ignition off i handed the car over to the service department. they were unable to find a code from the car that would tell them what the issue was. they kept the car for 3 days and were unable to recreate the problem. *tr

Check vsc light, brake light, stability light all flash and abs doesn't work. *tr

While driving the "check vsc system" light came on and i had to stand on the gas pedal to get the car to stop. there we no brakes on this vehicle. a buzz stays on continuously with the light on also but to get the car to stop, you need to stand on the pedal with both feet and push down as hard as the pedal will go. i took it to the dealer where i was told the brake actuator needs replaced and the part alone costs $2500. the part must be a new one instead of getting one from the junk yard because the old ones leak and toyota recognizes there is a problem so they redesigned it. everyone with a hybrid will have this problem eventually so why hasn't this car been recalled yet? *tr

I found that when i applied my brakes they did not engage immediately and when they did they switched from off to on rapidly (under constant and/or increasing brake pedal pressure). this was 3 days after my warranty expired. i had the system serviced and it cost me $2,000. i searched the internet and found that it seemed like a common problem. i contacted toyota and they denied that it was a common problem and did nothing to help me. come to find out that it is a very common and dangerous problem. i would like some help. *tr

Check vsc system warning for toyota camry hybrid 2007 'check vsc" warning came on before the brakes lost some of their power. we had intermittent loss of braking on the freeway, resulting in loss of brake power, delayed braking activation and increased brake pedal effort, therefore the car took longer to stop. it was a dangerous and very scary situation but we managed to slow down and stop. in the last 5 months, we have gotten this warning while driving or just before leaving home. it always goes away after one or two engine start and stops. the first time it happened the car has been two weeks in an airport parking lot. the dealer ran the diagnostics and they said they could not see the code because it was not stored in memory. without brakes on the freeway we could have been killed! *js

Driving car through town when abs, red triangle. vsc lights lite up dashboard. lost steering and braking ability. coasted to stop in local shopping center parking lot. thank god i was there and not on interstate or highway. took to dealer and they told me braking actuator failed and repair would be $3200. not covered by 10 year/100k hybrid warranty although braking system specific for hybrids. choices are: trade in car to dealer and let them fix it, drive it around until i kill someone or myself(not happening) or play the lottery tonight and maybe i can fix car tomorrow (also not happening) or swipe the plastic and end up paying over 4k for the repair......very disappointing for a toyota to cost this much in repairs with so little mileage. will never buy another toyota. *tr

I was pulling into a parking space (in a parking garage) and when i attempted to brake, the car continued to accelerate. it was finally stopped when it smashed into steel cables in front of the parking space. *tr

When readying to stop, lifted foot from accelerator and reached for brake. when pressure applied, brake pedal dropped 1 - 2 inches before brakes took hold. this was the fourth or fifth time that this type of braking response occurred over the life of the car. i took delivery of the car in june 2006. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. the contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the brake was engaged and failed to respond. the contact mentioned that the brake warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be replicated. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 85,000.

I was on the hwy and suddenly felt my brakes not working properly and started making a noise in immediately multiple lights turned on including abs. i took it to the dealership and they are asking me to replace the abs pump/accumulator which will cost over $3000.00. i am a single mother and bought this used car to save on my expenses and now i am not even in the condition to fix it due to financial constraints. i sent and email to toyota executives but did not receive any reply. i am still driving the car with all the lights on. god know what next. *tr

When i went to start my car which was still in my garage, i pressed my foot on the brake and pushed the "on" button. immediately i felt the brake "push back" and had to pump it once or twice to bring it back to normal. over the course of the next six weeks, this would occasionally happen again. in addition, and more troubling, was that sometimes, when i was parked in a parking lot, and then started the car, something slightly different happened. when i pressed on the brake and started the car, instead of feeling resistance it seemed that the brake was going all the way to the floor but my car was slowly rolling backwards. after pumping the brake a couple of times, it reverted to normal. finally, on 1/22/2014, the "check vsc system" warning suddenly came on as i was driving, as well as the antilock brake light, the regular brake light, the engine light, and the triangular hybrid warning light. the car was driving okay, but the lights all remained on until i brought my car into the dealer a few days later. the service department informed me that my brake accumulator had blown a fuse and had to be replaced. they stated they had no knowledge of this type of problem occurring in the camry hybrids. i paid $3400 to have the accumulator replaced. the next morning i read a news blurb in the newspaper about the investigation into the early camry hybrid models' brake problems and researched it further and ended up at this nhtsa site. my concern is that even though my accumulator has been replaced, has the root of the problem been addressed, or do i have to worry about the same thing happening again? i feel that this is a dangerous defect that could cause accidents, and i feel lucky that i had my problem addressed before anything more harmful occurred. *tr

While driving on crowed road (rt7 fairfax va) abs, brake, check engine and other warning lights came on. car was very difficult to drive and stop. almost went into a crash while trying to stop. the next day lights went off. then came on 2 days later. this was the 4th incident the dealer could not replicate the incident. . i understand looking at your web site toyota has a defective part which they refuse to recall? i understand it is a faulty actuator? when will a recall be issued? this is a dangerous situation. *tr

While braking the car to a complete stop, it was felt that the braking was intermittent. when this happened small kick were sensed on the brake pedal. this has continued multiple times since. this vehicle had the abs already replaced when it was about 97k miles. *tr

I was driving our family car and all of a sudden the abs light came on along with the brake light and others. car was difficult to stop. my husband told me to shut off the car and restart. that temporarily solved the problem but it then happened again 2 days later. it is not safe to drive! *tr

While coming to a stop before exiting a parking lot, the braking system was engaged in a normal fashion only to have the brake system shudder and then experience a loss of automatic brake assist. many lights on the dashboard, including the 'check vsc' light, illuminated along with a very audible warning sound. the dealership identified the problem as the abs brake actuator and related parts. the price to fix the issue was right near $3000 for parts and labor. *tr

While driving during rush hour traffic, the car's brake light came on and then 5-10 seconds later a "check vsc" messaged displayed on the message screen along with several warning lights (abs, traction control, and main warning). the brakes became very soft (like a car with no power brakes) but would slow the vehicle down. i slowed down and gave myself plenty of braking distance to get it home. after 10 minutes, the warning message and lights disappeared and the brakes returned to normal operations. this appeared to be a temporary glitch. since this first appeared, the problem has occurred 3 times while driving. the local toyota dealership determined that the abs actuator was failing and quoted me $3,100 to repair it. another symptom of this failure is a constant on/off buzzing noise coming from the abs actuator and a "chirping" noise when your foot is on the brake petal during a stop. the situation also appears to get worse when the temperature drops. i don't drive the vehicle anymore. there is no recall or service bulletin documenting this problem. the replacement part is the original design costing $2,750 and will fail again. i also contacted toyota about this problem and told them it was a major safety hazard. they offered some financial assistance but the repair is still going to be expensive. on this website and other internet forums, this problem is a common complaint for this vehicle. i believe the nhtsa needs to investigate this problem before a major accident or fatality occurs. i find this problem to be unacceptable for a toyota especially with only 70,500 miles on it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, all of the warnings lights illuminated as the brakes failed to engage. the contact also mentioned that the vehicle had to be coasted to the side of road in order to stop. the vehicle was taken to a dealer and the mechanic stated that the problem was unknown. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 68,000.

Vac system lights all came on and when i tried to brake the pedal went to the floor and i had trouble stopping. i almost hit the car in front of me. this is an intermittent problem. i have it in shop now but the engine codes show nothing so far. the mechanic i took it to suspects the accumulator. *tr

The power brakes seem to stop working when the vehicle goes over bumps while braking. *tr

Two different issues with brakes occurring on multiple dates. first, ineffective slowing when depressing the brakes and various lights came on including abs and brakes and warning to take to dealer immediately. the vehicle was harder to stop and required pumping the brakes to eventually stop. this happened intermittently and dealer could not get it to repeat. second issue is brakes making noise when depressing either as the vehicle slows or while holding brake down while stopped. this is very concerning as both appear to be complaints currently under investigation. please respond as soon as possible on current status of investigation. *tr

I was driving care and warning light came on to check the vsc system. per toyota service error code c1391 represented core vsc abs brake control module failure. full unit includes abs accentuator pump assembly and computer control. this case was reported to: toyota motor sales, usa, inc. your case is filed at our headquarters office under [xxx] and file #[xxx] searching the internet, multiple incidents of this were found. toyota has reportedly reconfigured this assembly since it has been failing, so the part to replace the current one is different than the one originally placed. here are a couple of links: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/105-camry-hybrid/401450-2007-tch-check-vsc-system-code-c1391.html http://www.faqs.org/car/toyota-camry-hybrid/service-brakes/ the customer service representative at the local toyota dealership said that they are keeping the part in stock since it is needing to be replaced. cost of the part is $2800 (approx.) plus labor to replace/bleed lines/reprogram etc. this seems to be a safety issue, since the brakes are harder to compress, the vehicle stability is compromised, multiple indicator lights are lit on the dashboard, etc. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

i purchased a used 07 camry hybrid in september 2013. on a return trip from alabama over the thanksgiving holiday, the abs, brake and (2) warning lights appeared in the display area of the dashboard. on monday, december 02, 2013, i took the car to the local toyota dealership later to find out that it will cost me approximately $3700 to have the abs accumulator replaced. *tr

The first incident, the abs light came on, i turned off the car and started it again it stayed on and when i got on the road, i had to press the brakes all the way to the floor to get the car to stop. the next time, it did the same thing and after driving a while it will just release and the brakes will be back to normal. i took it to the dealership and they couldn't find anything wrong the first time because the light was off. the next time the light came on i brought it back but by the time they got the car to the back to test, the light was off again and they can't get the computer program to give an error message again. the third time, i brought it in and he came to the lane and tested it and told me it was the brake system accuator, like so many others i have been reading about. each time this happens i have to push the brakes all the way to the floor to stop, i'm afraid i may be on the highway going a faster speed when it happens and have an accident. at this point, the car has disengaged the air bags so if there is an accident the air bags will not engage, which is another concern. $2200.00 to repair, nearly 10% of the cost of what i paid for the car. i drive two teenage girls, my daughter and an international student who resides with us and i worry constantly about the brakes failing while we are driving due to this safety issue that i feel like toyota should fix because of the high rate of failures. i've been saving for the repair but haven't gotten it all yet. *tr

Under wet conditions, my brake warning light appeared just as i was approaching a red light, i found i had no power brakes, and barely managed to avoid entering the intersection. i took my car in for repair, they told me there was a problem with my abs system, and the only way to fix it was to just replace the actuator assembly for ~$3,000. *tr

We were on a trip from ny to atlanta, ga last thanksgiving and somewhere in north carolina, the car emitted a warning ping, and a number of lights on the dash, including brakes, check engine, vcs and a yellow triangle, illuminated. a message on the display read "check abs". at the same time the brakes became extremely difficult to actuate and i felt as though i had to put all my effort into activating the car's brakes. we pulled into a rest stop and as we began to slow, the lights went out. just before we got to a parking spot however, the same thing occurred. we let the car sit for a while before attempting to move to turn it on again, at which point, things seemed normal. it happened once or twice again on the trip there, but didn't occur at all on the way back nor throughout 2014... until now. recently the same thing has begun happening with more regularity. we took the car in for a diagnosis today. while researching the issue, i noticed that this has been reported previously, so i decided to add my voice to the masses. *tr

When i was driving at approx. 45 miles and tried to apply brakes to stop, i realized that the brake pedal responded very slowly and almost failed to stop properly on november 25, 2013. i managed to bring the car to toyota dealer services on that day. they could not find anything wrong. they recorded that c1202 stored in ecu, low brake fluid warning, abs pump motor operation suspe topped off brake fluid. i started hearing a creaking noise in march 2014 when i stepped on the brake. i brought the car to the toyota dealer services on april 2, 2014. initially they could not find anything wrong, however, i insisted on testing it further. eventually, they found that there was a problem with an actuator in the braking system. i had to replace the actuator in the braking system and was not covered by a warranty. i had to pay over $3300 including tax. after understanding how an actuator works in braking system, i believe that the incident on november 25, 2013 must be caused by an actuator issue. i urge toyota to recall the actuator in braking system for the following reasons. first, even trained technicians at toyota dealer could not find an issue easily. they finally found it after they failed twice in our case (it took nearly two days). those technicians should be informed, so they can deal with customers like us quickly and properly. second, a sign of actuator problem can be easily neglected. a creaking noise, which caused us to bring a car to the dealer was pretty subtle. third a brake failure may lead fatal car accidents. i was very scared when the brake almost failed to work. this may be a lucky case since i did not have a car accident. *tt

I was driving the car as usually and first the turn on the vss light and when a i try to stop the car and didnt stop properly and i almost crash the car a went to the side of the road for try to save my life and the other car driver from that day until now i have the problem with tha car at the of break .the dealership employee said thats a problem of every camry hybrid and i need to chage the abs system but cost $3400.00 plus the instalation and i just want if everithing is ok with my car or is a manufactor problem. *tr

Brake failure on the freeway. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. the contact stated that while traveling approximately 45 mph, the brakes failed to respond to deceleration attempts. the contact also mentioned that the vsc warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the brake actuator had failed. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 74,000.

The parking brake light comes on while driving , about a minute later the check vsc light comes on and the power brakes fail, you can still stop with the brake, but you have to really press hard on the brake, after driving a couple miles or a few minutes the brakes will return to normal. very disconcerting and dangerous, afraid to drive this car. *tr

All sensor lights came on with "check vsc system" message. brakes felt mushy and it was harder to stop. took into dealership next day but lights had turned off. dealership scanned for computer codes but found nothing. everything fine. 6 weeks later on 300 mile trip, same thing occurred. i had no choice but to continue on trip and return home a week later. took into dealership. now they state that there is an internal leak in the abs actuator and want $3,189.00 to fix. read where this part has been redesigned due to an engineering flaw in original part and where many other owners of this model have experienced same problem. the repair cost is outrageous. this makes my car dangerous to drive, but i cannot afford the fix. *tr

My 2007 camry hybrid has braking issues. i have the pumping noise when brakes are depressed, which just keeps getting louder. earlier this year i almost slammed into the cars in front of me once when, while i was coming to a stop all my brake lights came on and my car shot forward. i had to swerve into the oncoming lane to avoid rear-ending the car in front of me. thankfully there were no cars in the oncoming lane at that moment. once i was stopped all the lights went off and i backed up into a driveway to get out of traffic. very scary. *tr

Driving about 25 mph and i was going to slow down to park on the curb and car had trouble stopping, the vsc system warning light went on and then the engine just died. had car checked out in december at toyota of redlands and said it was the brake actuator and cost to fix was going to be around $2800.00, i declined and they understood it was expensive. *tr

Please investigate the abs system on the hybrid 2007 camry. i almost killed myself about 2 months ago. i was going about 60mph when i hit on the brakes to slow down on a curve the brakes would not respond, it was like the brakes were really hard to step on, and to control the steering wheel. the lights to check the vsc system came on, check abs, the emergency brake light. after a few seconds everything would go back to normal. i have done extensive research and there are so many complaints with the same problems on the 2007 camry hybrid. please do something about it so toyota can recall and fix the problem before someone gets killed. after taking it to toyota for the last 5 months without finding a problem, because the computer would not register anything and they couldn't duplicate the problem, now they are saying its the abs system and it cost $4,000 to fix it. they are not doing anything to investigate the problem because they claim that not enough people have registered complaints. so i ask how many people have to die before we get any attention. *tr

Brakes fail... the pedal brake is put so hard to push when coming a light to vsc check system...im so angry to toyota ... but i still love my car ... i no use my car because is not secure for my family. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. the contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, all of the warnings lights illuminated and the contact had to use extreme force on the brake in order for them to engage. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 88,000.

Brake actuator failed on the car. this is a very common problem and a recall should be issued. toyota knows about this. the oem replacement part number is a different part number than oem that the car was built with. the car thankfully wasn't damaged as it was going very slowly, and only crashed into the curb when the brake actuator completely failed and the vehicle was unable to stop. *tr
