Car started running poorly and using more gas. service engine light came on. *tr
2005 nissan xterra fuel level sensor malfunction. with mis-reading on the fuel level, the vehicle may run out of fuel when it appears to have plenty of fuel in the tank, causing a safety hazard. this is a very common problem on '05+ nissan xterra and pathfinder suv's. these are usually correlated with a po463 emission failure code. *tr
My nissan xterra is having a fuel gauge/sensor problem which results in the driver having no idea how much fuel is in the gas tank. this is a very common problem on nissan xterras, pathfinders and frontiers. all one needs to do is an internet search to see how common this problem is. nissan has not issued a recall and will not cooperate with me in getting this fixed. the cost of the repair is between $300-500 (most of which is labor) and a vehicle can not pass inspection if they have this problem. i have already run out of gas in a not so nice area while going 55 mph and controlling the vehicle/getting it to the side of the road was difficult when it was out of gas. i was fearful of not only the difficulty in handling/dealing with the vehicle in a safe manner so as to not cause an accident but imagine my surprise that was out of gas and i could not tell because of the faulty sensor not indicating actually how much gas was in the car. i was fearful for my safety because this happened on a highway in a not so nice area in the metro nyc area. all one needs to do is an internet search on nissan fuel gauge or sensor problems and will see many complaints about this issue. nissan has recalled earlier models for this same issue but has not recalled any vehicles from 2005 on for this defective problem. a nissan mechanic at a local dealership told me that this was a common problem on xterras, pathfinders and frontiers and wished me good luck in getting nissan to fix it under a recall since he thought it was highly unlikely that nissan would do anything about it. i have contacted nissan consumer affairs about this issue and they were not helpful at all. they basically told me that nissan will not repair this issue since there is no recall on it even though this is a very common problem on their vehicles. *tr
I own a 2005 nissan xterra. i have had a code that reads p0463 that has caused my service engine soon light on. the fuel level gauge is malfunctioning and it is misreading the level of fuel that i actually have. how is this not a recall issue. instead i have to pay 600 dollars to help prevent me from running out of fuel on the highway and creating a dangerous situation. *tr
Fuel sensor has gone out at 57,000 miles. this causes the gas gauge not to work or work very slowly. in taking it to dealer, fix is 475.00. i have researched this and it seems all nissan suv experience this. i asked dealer about this and he said there was a bulletin, but it recommended buying a better part. *tr
In my 2005 nissan xterra, my fuel gauge began not reading correctly once it got below 1/4 tank. when i fill it up, it doesn't always register that i put gas in. now my service engine soon light keeps coming on for days at a time. it will go off for a few days, then come on again. *tr
my 2005 xterra check engine light just went on and after testing my ecu i received error code p0463, which is a faulty fuel level sensor. this condition can cause potentially dangerous conditions for people traveling at high speed who are under the impression they still have gas in their tank when in fact they do not. *tr
First problem - when i had 53,000 mi on it, it was still under warranty, it started cutting out and wouldn't accelerate at all, had to have it towed to the dealer to find out that the transmission was bad. they said that he radiator leaked, flooding my transmission with coolant and ruined my transmission. they refused to honor the warranty stating that "the tranmission did not fail - the radiator did (which was not covered under warranty) therefore the transmission was not covered". i had to let them replace the radiator and flush the transmission 3 times - it cost me $1,400 out of pocket - now here i am 30,000 miles later and my reverse will not work at all, my transmission needs replaced. so i had paid 1,400 just to buy myself an year & a half and now i need a new transmission. 2nd problem - i have the fuel gauge/sensor problem, also. i filled up one day, got in my car and gauge read empty & check engine light was on. i had a rip-off mechanic charge me $170 to replace the sensor - nothing ever changed, gauge is still broke and light is still on. nissan is so wrong for not handling their problems, consumers deserve to be treated fairly. there should be a class action suit against them - just read these complaint boards. somehow i have both of the most common problems with these vehicles.
No specific events leading to failure. standard use of the 2005 nissan xterra and the failure has occurred at approximately 70k miles on the car.. the failure is the fuel sensor gauge which causes the gas gauge to be inaccurate at all times. it will go from full to empty in 1 second while you are headed down the road. other times it will show half tank when the tank is empty. it happens every time we are in the car. consequences could be fatal if we had not caught on to the issue. at any point we run the risk of running out of gas due to an error in the way the gauge is reading.. we are forced to track miles on the odometer each time we fill up. nothing has been done by me at this point. nissan has acknowledged the issue by recalling 2006+ models and extending the warranty to 72k miles on the 2005 models. our car now has 90k miles on it so we do not meet either of their "safety" fixes. *tr
My 2005 xterra check engine light just went on and after testing my ecu i received error code p0463, which is a faulty fuel level sensor. this condition can cause potentially dangerous conditions for people traveling at high speed who are under the impression they still have gas in their tank when in fact they do not. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. thank you for your consideration. *tr
Check engine light turns on and gas gauge reads empty even when full. my warranty is np longer in force and i did some research and found out the cost to us consumers, on this prexisting factory defect, not only affects xterras but also other nissan models. i.e. internet link: http://x.nissanhelp.com/forums/xterra/4151-fuel-gauge-problem-sevice-engine-soon-light.html. *tr
2005 nissan xterra. at 40000 miles it is common for this model to have the fuel level sensor fail. this can cause disabled vehicles due to vehicles running out of gas. this is a common problem with this model vehicle and the manufacturer is aware of the problem but refuses to assist or even warn owners of the potential problems. nissan recalled 2001-2003 models for the same issue, but continue to use the same faulty part. nissan or a mechanic must removed the gas tank to get to the fuel pump and the fuel level sensor. it even requires a special tool to remove this unit. total cost of repair between $550 & $600 for a $90.00 part. *tr
2005 nissan x-terra fuel gauge stops working, making you uncertain of fuel level in vehicle. also causes check engine light to come on and stay. according to internet research, this is a very common problem, costing consumers around $600 to repair, as nissan claims it is out of warranty part.*tr
205 nissan xterra. at approx 65,000mi, fuel gauge started going to empty after filling the tank and check engine light came on. after 40-60 miles driven, fuel gauge begins to read again, but is inaccurate. *tr
2005 nissan xterra's check engine light came on. took it to autozone to have them check the error codes and the test resulted with a p0463 code (fuel level sensor circuit high input). i have notices problems with the fuel gauge being stuck on empty with low fuel indicator light on even after filling tank to full. after driving for few days the gauge eventually and slowly begin to indicate fuel. i've since read many forums on nissan suv's that have same issue. *tr
Own a 2005 nissan xterra, and my check engine light went on around 50,000 miles. i researched code and it is the fuel level sensor is malfunctioning. consequences are i have no idea what my gas level is at and there is no warranty on my vehicle anymore. *tr
2005 nissan xterra. have approx 43k miles on it and the service engine soon light has come on. i took it in to a nissan dealer in oceanside, ca and was told that i need a new fuel sensor. the current fuel sensor in my car must be fine since i have had zero problems with my fuel readings. there has been zero change in driveability, but nissan is trying to stick me for $515 for a new sensor, i declined the service. i've seen a number of people that have this same problem and it sounds like it's not isolated to just myself. a recall must be made by nissan to alleviate this problem! *tr
2005 xterra: fuel gage inoperable. 10 days ago, fuel gage quit working. next few days, it would work sometimes; sometimes not. last 4 days, it has not worked at all. *tr
My 2005 nissan x-terra's fuel gauge works intermittently and its functionality is tied to a "service engine soon" light. the gauge will read empty even when there is gas in the tank. this seems to be a common issue with nissans. *tr
Fuel gauge problem and service engine soon light i just got back from the dealer w/ my 2005xterra se. i have a similar problem. my ses light comes on and my dte gauge reads ---- when the fuel gauge gets down to 1/4 of a tank. the dealer told me it registered error code po463 and that i need a new fuel sending unit. since my xterra has 56000 miles on it is not covered by warranty. they tell me approx $600.00 to fix. in my case the ses light resets after approx 300 miles. as long as i keep the gas more than 1/4 of a tank the ses light won't come on. *tr
I own a 2005 nissan xterra and recently my fuel gauge has been reading 1/2 tank full, then out of no where, it drops to empty. upon refilling the tank (15gal worth) the gauge remains on empty w/ the "check engine light" on. after some driving the gauge eventually returns to the proper location, and the process continues every time. i've read a few discussion boards on the subject and it seems to be very common on nissan suv's and alot of complaints concerning the fuel pump/sending unit. *tr
Fuel sending unit for a 2005 nissan xterra is bad. part is not a recall part, but part has failed for so many consumers. *tr
2005 nissan xterra se, check engine light came on after i noticed my fuel level gauge and digital read out were starting to act funny. autozone checked the code from the engine. faulty fuel level sensor. after reading tons of discussion boards, a lot of people with nissan's are having this problem. at $600 for a replacement, a recall is necessary as this problem is spread through many different models. *tr
Multiple complaints: at approx 55k miles, engine would rev out before shifting gears, at approx. 72k miles started vibration when at steady speed (approx 45 mph), so purchased new tires. at approx. 76k miles temperature gauge would fluctuate and vibration and gear slam increased. at approx. 79k miles blower stopped working and temperature gauge would go up and down. at 80,532 mi. had radiator replaced and coolant flushed and two transmission flushes done, as coolant and transmission fluids mixed due to radiator leaking. transmission continued vibration and began slamming again 3 mos. later. 6 mos. later engine overheated , had towed. engine was bad due to overheating from radiator assembly fault nissan describes. rebuilt engine, new timing chain and timing control valve, and new radiator. still cannot drive vehicle- severe transmission slamming gears, vehicle stalls when you take foot off gas, oil pressure gauge goes to bottom when foot off gas and up when you depress. since, nissan has extended warranty to 80k for radiator assembly can crack and internal leakage of coolant mixes with transmission fluids. i am not covered they say, but if i had been notified of this 2 years ago i would have been. their letter specifically states that it can occur at "higher mileages". i want nissan to reimburse me costs incurred and fix my transmission. i have been without a vehicle on and off for 8 mos. of the past two years, and do not think this vehicle will ever run properly due to their negligence to notify owners of the potential problem. i've seen hundreds of complaints. also have had engine light go on and off for last 2 years- due to fuel sending unit problem, nissan has extended warranty for this to 72k. i now have 94k - these issues need to be recalls and owners reimbursed- please investigate warranty extension issue! also had squeaks, battery issue, no start even w/new battery, cleared electronics/radio blown, cds don't eject, driver window won't go up unless pulled. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. the contact stated that the fuel gauge was defective as it would indicate that the fuel tank was full and suddenly indicate that it was empty. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who informed the contact that the fuel sending unit needed to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure mileages was approximately 76,000. the current mileage was approximately 100,000.
I had 1/2 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. this has happened the last two weeks in a row. after doing research online, i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. loyal nissan customers should not have to pay for something that is clearly a defect on nissan's part. *tr
Fuel sending unit failure: fuel gauge fails intermittently. service engine soon light on at fuel level >3/4 and <1/4. will take a long time to register any level after a fillup. *tr
I have a 2005 nissan xterra that the fuel sensor went out. when you fill up the tank it will drop down and say its empty. so you have to write down the mileage so you know how much is in it. what i have read is this is a big problem that goes back to the early 2000's. *tr
Service engine soon light illuminated and obd code p0463 fuel level sensor circuit high input will not reset. defective fuel level sending unit. *tr
2005 nissan xterra fuel system. i have complained to the nissan dealership about squeaking from the moment i purchased this vehicle in 2005 (new) - but they claimed they could not hear it (??). now my ses light comes on indicating a fuel system (fuel sensor gauge) problem. as i know that i am one of very many xterra and pathfinder owners with the same problem, it would appear that this item is defective. i also owned the 2000 xterra - there was a recall on the fuel system and it was replaced. why is there not a recall now - since nissan is obviously doing nothing to remedy this situation. *tr
Hi i have a 2005 nissan xterra. these vehicles are having major problems with the fuel sending unit, located in the gas tank on the fuel pump. the symptoms are that one day out of the blue, with low miles on the vehicle, the gas gauge stops working or becomes inaccurate. on the odb ii, it shows as po463. nissan will not cover and this is unsafe, as you have to "guess" by mileage how much fuel is left. mine went out and i fixed it myself as i was concerned with safety of running out of fuel at a bad time. *tr
Non-working fuel gauge problem and check engine light on! *tr
2005 xterra 35000 miles filled up at gas station gauge went to completely empty. the dte read ------ . did some research and found that this is affecting all exterra which seems to indicate this is a real problem with several models, including xterra's. now trying to find out why they apparently won't cover it. this needs to be a recall as this is affecting all customers. *tr
My fuel sensor and evap valve have both failed on my '05 nissan xterra. i use it off-road, which is supposedly why the evap valve failed. so many people are having these problems that they are clearly a manufacturing defect. nissan should be ashamed not to stand by the quality of their product; they should be replacing it for free. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. after refueling the fuel gauge displayed a reading of empty. the check engine light also began to illuminate on the dashboard. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the fuel sending unit would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure continued to recur intermittently after refueling. the failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 118,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. the contact stated after refilling the vehicle with gasoline fuel, the fuel level gauge indicated that the fuel tank was empty. the dealer advised that the fuel sensor would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and there were no prior warnings of the failure. the failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage is 63,400 updated 9/13/10 *cn the consumer stated the fuel gauge in the instrument panel started malfunctioning and showing erroneous fuel levels. the gauge would then fluctuate between normal levels to showing empty or nearly empty inaccurately. the consumer referenced recall 10v075000. the exact problem that he was experiencing. however, his model year was not included in the recall. updated 09/15/10
Inaccurate fuel gauge leading to inaccurate fuel readings; the gauge may show gas left when tank is actually empty or vice versa; all digital dash readings and components short out or completely stop working including mileage readings; have to continually fill up with gas to ensure i have enough to run the vehicle; i have run out of gas while traveling at 80 miles per hour on the highway several times, this is a very serious safety hazard; i have two small children traveling with me and do not need to run out of gas on the side of the highway. this vehicle has never been in an accident but has had this problem for over a year. *tr
I have been experiencing issues with my fuel gauge on my 2005 nissan xterra. i can no longer place trust in the gauge, since i have run out of gas twice now, while the gauge still showed fuel available in the tank. the error codes on the computer module state it is the fuel sending unit. i have spoken with nissan and they refused to rectify this issue. *tr
2005 nissan xterra - i had the same problem with my fuel gauge- my xterra is year 2005 recall is listed for 2006 model. i would like to have my 2005 xterra included in the recall since i had the same problem. thank you. nhtsa campaign id number : 10v075000 component: fuel system, gasoline:storage:auxillary tank *tr
I filled the tank in our 05 xterra only to find that the gas gauge was not acknowledging the fill up. a few minutes later the gauge dropped to empty, and then the fuel light and check engine light came on. now, the fuel gauge does not work at all and the repair estimates are $675+. nissan will not acknowledge this as a problem, yet much internet research tells me that this occurs on most xterras. this xterra is the primary vehicle for my wife and two children under the age of 3, and twice now they have run out of gas because of this. *tr
I have a 2005 nissan xterra. earlier this week i fueled up the vehicle and continued home. i realized that my fuel gauge was reading only 3/4 of a tank. so, i went back up to the gas station and tried to finish filling the tank (on .57 cents). every day since then, once i start the car the fuel gauge reads bad. this past monday the service engine soon light had come on. i then went out and purchased an obd ii scanner to read the error code. it was p0463 (fuel level sensor a circuit high input). did some research on the subject and found that it means that i have a faulty fuel sending unit. it seems to be a very common problem for 2005-2007 nissan xterra. this is a safety issues. if my wife is driving my daughter back to nyc and the car runs out of fuel and they are stranded in the middle of the new jersey turnpike with people driving past them in excess of 70-80 mph.... that is far from safe. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. while driving approximately 65 mph on normal road conditions, the check engine warning indicator illuminated unexpectedly on the instrument panel. the warning indicator remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. the vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer for diagnostic testing and they concluded that the fuel sending unit failed. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 57,900 and current mileage was 58,500. updated 03/23/09. *lj updated 03/29/09.*jb

2005 xterra fuel gauge failure. gauge shows empty when full and check engine light is on. dealer wants $550 to fix. this is a known defect and safety issue and should be subject of recall. if a woman was alone late at night and the gas gauge suddenly showed empty she would be forced to stop at the nearest station which may not be in the safest area. i know, because i work near an airport in a high crime area. *tr

2005 nissan xterra - service engine soon light comes on, then fuel gauge drops to zero. light goes on and off apparently in relation to amount of gas in the tank. searched "service engine soon gas gauge" and top of the list were dozens of nissan owners' complaints about the very same problem. *tr
