Problems with 2005 Nissan Xterra FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

On average, the 2005 Nissan Xterra starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE and its various aspects after 67 018 miles.

Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2005 Nissan Xterra

Purchased my '05 nissan xterra in the spring of 2012 with about 160,000 miles. for the past 2 months i had minor issues like shuddering/vibrations randomly when i accelerated and the heat not working when i was at a complete stop. it was not until the other day when i was at a complete stop and my car would not accelerate properly that i knew i had a problem with the transmission. i took my xterra to 3 different mechanics and each one explained to me that i would need a completely new transmission and from there they would see if i in fact needed to change the radiator (which they were positive was the original issue due to similar issues with other nissan suv owners). the repairs will cost me well over $4,000 and unfortunately as a college student, there is no way i can afford to repair the transmission and radiator. what was appalling to me was when i researched the issue online. there are hundreds upon hundreds of complaints online on various websites about this issue and nissan has yet to issue a recall. the extended warranty excluded many people and put many more at an unfair disadvantage. i personally bought my nissan, because of their reputation, but the fact that they will not come to the aid of their consumers speaks volumes of this company. *tr

When driving at various speeds i began to notice the engine bogging down when changing gears. upon taking it to my mechanic i was told that there was a leak between the transmission and engine coolant systems. the fix would require a replacement of both systems totally approx. $6000! apparently this is a "known issue" with 2005-2010 xterras. upon contacting nissan i was told that since my vehicle was over 100,000 miles that there was nothing that they could do for me. if this is a known issue, and a rather major one at that, i'm not sure why there hasn't been any recalls or some kind of fix. *tr

Check engine light came on then when i filled vehicle with fuel gauge went to empty and low fuel light came on. gauge does not come back on u til vehicle is driven from 85 to 125 miles and then takes awhile to reach up to around 3/4 full. never really sure how much fuel is in tank. was advised to change the fuel tank cap and did twice but still not working. have to rely on trip gauge to know if i have enough fuel. this seems risky for an almost 75 year old woman. *tr

Check engine light comes on and the trouble shooting number is p0463. which i understand nissan automobiles have a lot of trouble with this situation. i would like to informed when they are having a recall to repair this problem. *tr

Gas gauge reads empty when the fuel tank is full or shows some quantity of gas when it is empty and variations in between. this is a known problem affecting several models and years that nissan extended its warranty for, but did not recall, claiming it is not a safety issue (see http://www.nissanassist.com/web/fuel-sending-unit/index.php?menu=2). the extended warranty did not advise owners to replace the problem sending units, it just provided for repairs if and when, subject to mileage and time limits, the vehicle manifested the sending unit problem. my low mileage vehicle developed this problem at 46000 miles, well under the extended warranty mileage limit but the timing was beyond the arbitrary extended time period. following my opening a case with nissan consumer affairs they denied coverage for replacement of the fuel sending unit as it was beyond the arbitrary time limit, although well below the mileage limit. faulty fuel quantity readings are not just an inconvenience. they can result in hazardous overfilling of fuel tanks (or attempts to fill an already filled tank) when the gauge erroneously reads empty resulting in flammable gas spills, dizzying and environmentally unsound vapor emissions at the pump. on the flip side when there is little or no fuel in the tank but the gauge shows some quantity of fuel such as 1/4 tank or more, driving off on long commutes or trips results in running out of gas on highways. in my case this is in rural areas or back roads and highways out of cell phone range and far from services, and can occur in severe weather conditions. i believe this known problem is a safety problem that poses unnecessary risks to drivers and should have resulted in a recall, not just an arbitrary limited extension of warranty, and disclaimer beyond that. *tr

Check engine light came up in my 2005 nissan xterra at 85,000 miles. took it to the repair shop where i make oil changes, i was told transmission broke and radiator fluid contamination. took it to the dealer, they confirm that the transmission failure, but they flat out refused the contamination, instead offer to replace both transmission and radiator for $5,500 to avoid future problems. i was not convinced. immediately, another guy in the dealership offers to trade in for a new car. i took the car out and went to another transmission shop. sure enough, they noticed radiation fluid contaminating the transmission fluid. cost was around $3,750. because, the deadline was early june'2013 and now is early july, they are telling me i cannot submit the claim. i hope the court does not approve the final settlement. nissan should recall and pay for the repairs of defective transmission/ radiator. *tr

Gas gauge wont read, displays empty when full. goes back and forth. 2006 and 2008 recalled for same problem and part # but nissan wont pay to have 2005 fixed or do a recall. we but from roanoke nissan dealer used at 57351 miles. they didn't offer warranty and we didn't get extended warranty. *tr

The gas gauge goes from half full to empty and light comes on when the car is in idle. the gauge does not re-set until the tank is filled and drives for about 100 miles. i believe it is an issue with the sending unit. is there are re-call? *tr

Gas gauge has quit working...common problem with these automobiles...why no recall? *tr

I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. i went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. after returning home and doing research, i went online to x.nissanhelp.com after performing a search, i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600." *tr

The check engine light went on and per inspection by the nissan dealer it was due to the fuel lever sender (code p0463). estimated labor/material will cost me $500.00. *tr

Fuel level sensor malfunction. *tr

Fuel sending unit has failed. service engine light has turned on; fuel gauge shows empty; received extended warranty for fuel unit for 72k miles or 6 years. i am at 70k miles but i bought it in 2005 so its past the 6 years. this is such a common failure and should be replaced by the manufacturer via a recall. *tr

While driving, the engine cuts off without warning causing all systems to shut down, including brake assist and power steering causing a near collision twice, once while navigating a curve at low speed with a ditch on the right side and once while navigating a curve at higher speed and nearly coasting into oncoming traffic. the issue is due to a known defect in the radiator causing coolant to spill into the transmission. this is a major safety concern that appears in vehicles without warning in any circumstance at any speed. please initiate a recall asap for our safety! *tr

The fuel level indicator is very unreliable. sometimes it reads full and other times it won't move from empty even though there's fuel in the tank. after doing some internet research on this problem i found that it's very common in the 2005 xterras! why hasn't there been a recall on the faulty sensor? *tr

Fuel gauge reads empty when not. also digital mileage is incorrect. check engine light is on due to this problem. fuel sensor?? *tr

I have a 200d xterra that i bought new at the end of 2005. recently the gas gauge stopped working. i would fillit up than he gas light comes on along with service engine soon. next day gas gauge reads 3/4 full than never moves. nissan wants to charge $450 just so happens my extended warranty ran out 10-15-11 and i have over 72,000 miles on it. *tr

Fuel level sending unit fails with a p0463 stored in self-diagnosis. this is the same as the open recall for 06-08 in tsb ntb07-069b. however mine is an 05 and if you look on the web,,,,,,,this is a common problem with xterra s from 05-09 not just 06-08. nissan is not being helpful, and running out of fuel in the middle of the road is not good, nor is the $500+ dollars they want to fix this!! *tr

Fuel gauge, fuel sending unit is not working properly. *tr

I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. after returning home and doing research, i went online to x.nissanhelp.com after performing a search, i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-59k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600. *tr

After my "service engine soon" light was activated, i proceeded to take my nissan xterra to the nissan dealership in hawthorne, ca, to have it checked out. nissan charged me $129 for a diagnostic test, which found an error code of p0463. that error coded indicated that the fuel level sensor was malfunctioning. i declined to pay $570 to have it repaired. in doing some research on the internet, i found that several nissan vehicles, especially its trucks and suvs, have suffered from this product defect. i would greatly appreciate it if nissan rectified the situation by recalling vehicles or covering my charge for repairs. *tr

The fuel level sensor error code is on due to a part failure and this is a known fault that occurs frequently and has safety concerns due to possibility of running our of fuel. *tr

Error code p0463 - apparently due to a malfunctioning fuel level sensor and requiring substantial shop time to drop fuel tank and replace sensor/pump unit (not to mention part cost, which is not being supplied by manufacturer despite the known, widespread flaw). *tr

Started hearing a rumble strip sound while on smooth pavement. vehicle started shifting harder, with slight vibrations. before i could take it in, i was involved with a hit in run in a parking lot. nissan said the upper and lower radiator hoses were soaked in transmission fluid. manager said it had been leaking for some time. he said i needed a new radiator, and transmission cost of 6500. nissan updated their radiators because they new it was a defective part, but refuse to take care of damage they have caused. see link http://www.nissanassist.com/web/radiator/faqs.php?menu=22

The fuel level sensor is not working correctly causing an unsafe fuel indication reading. *tr

Had a p0463 code come up for fuel level sensor a circuit high input. i understand that this is very common on second generation nissans. *tt

I have a 2005 xterra with 38k miles, "service engine soon" light came on, took it to the dealership, hooked it up to the computer, diagnosis is a bad fuel sending unit $600.00 to replace. i'm just over the extended warranty but dealership cannot help. the sending unit and gasket are $200.00. $400.00 for labor seems a bit steep. at what point in time will nissan recall this issue? *kb

Engine light service soon is on the car is starting to stall. out of warranty but while researching this is a know issue for nissan xterras. *tr

Radiator corrosion leaking fluid into transmission. replacing radiator and transmission. replaced vaporizer solenoid and the ipdm unit (voluntary recall) which caused stalling while driving. fuel sensor replaced. mandatory recall on the ecm unit. no notification on voluntary or mandatory recalls. *tr

This morning the fuel level sensor on my 2005 nissan xterra stopped working as i was driving to work. the dealership wants $500 to fix the sensor which was a known problem and recalled on earlier models of this truck. and is also a common problem for other xterra owners. please recall this part. fuel level sensors last much longer than this is other makes and models of vehicles. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. the contact stated that the check engine light would illuminate sporadically and the fuel gage would read inaccurately. the dealer diagnosed that the fuel sending unit was defective and would need to be replaced. the manufacturer was contacted but denied any assistance with repair to the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 97,000 and the current mileage 98,000. updated 11/29/11 *bf the consumer stated a recall was issued for his make and model, but not the year, as well as other models. updated 12/12/11

Dte (distance to empty) indication flashes "---". vehicle "service engine soon" light illuminated. code po463, fuel level sensor a circuit input high is stored in memory. according to internet searches and circuit diagram, believed to be fuel level sensor (in-tank). *tt

Tl* the owns a 2005 nissan xterra. the contact stated that the fuel sending unit failed. the fuel gauge would read empty whenever the fuel tank was filled with gasoline. the vehicle was taken to the dealer after routine maintenance and the contact was informed that the fuel sending unit failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. the failure mileage was 108,000.

Fuel level sensor malfunctioning. *tr

2005 nissan xterra having gas gauge / service engine light issue. po463 is the code which means the fuel sender/sensing unit is bad. this is clearly a faulty part issue on nissan and there should be a recall. there are too many people having this same issue with their 2005 - 2007 xterras, pathfinders, & frontiers. this is a hazard not knowing how much fuel is in your tank and it is a ridiculous to have to pay $600 to get this fixed when it is a faulty part issue. *tr

Nissan has had a great # of fuel sensor problems with their line of vehicles. this is a well documented fact . my fuel gauge failed a few weeks back and now reads empty all the time despite filling the tank up. the fuel sensor problem also loads a code which causes the check engine light to stay on- not a good thing if you need to get a state inspection done. nissan has ignored mine and many other requests to fix this problem. with a sensor that does not work or reads gas levels falsely due to faulty parts nissan is putting or has put in it's cars this is putting the driving public at great risk. accidents could be caused due to running out of fuel when you thought you had enough because of this faulty fuel sensor.

I have a 2005 xterra service. fuel tank was not 1/4 tank and filled it up - had to stop at the store anyway so i gassed up. anyway, driving down the road, i looked down and my fuel gauge is on empty and the light on. interesting, i thought. then the check engine comes on later. i was thinking some kind of gas pocket or something so i got home and un did the gas cap, and disconnect the battery. engine light and fuel level still on and the unit is failure to read fuel gauge. *tr

Noticed check engine light on dash was on but detected no issues and unemployed so didn't run down to nissan to pay them $600 to turn out a light. needed tx inspection sticker about 4 days ago went to get one at nearby jiffy lube and they denied because of "safety or emissions issues" on a code "p0463:fuel level sensor circuit high input". i got home and researched and found that is was quite common problem with xterras and pathfinders. so common in fact, that previous generation nissans were actually recalled for a similar issue. the sensor is in the gas tank and only checks the accuracy of the gas gauge. unfortunately, no recall has been placed on the part for the 2nd gen yet, and so nissan customers are being forced to have the dealer make the repair to the tune of about $600. what a racket. and without the repair i can't get my inspection sticker, when the worst that can happen is to run out of gas because the gas gauge may not show the correct level in the tank. my gauge is working fine. since when is even a possible gas gauge problem a "safety and emissions" hazard anyway? racket. the guy at jiffy lube told me it might be sending to much gas thru the engine. what? a blatant lie. so apparently, the system has it that this unemployed person, with barely enough to survive has to either risk a big costly ticket for no inspection sticker or line nissan's pockets with money i need to feed my family for a faulty part that they have even recalled the prior version of already when my vehicle runs good as it ever did and the gas gauge is working just fine. this is just wrong on so many levels and an injustice and apparently, you folks are the only ones that can bring justice to this situation by forcing them to recall that part they can't seem to get right before they rob more good americans of their limited resources in the racket they have going.

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. the contact stated while attempting to accelerate from a stop, the vehicle stalled. the contact noticed that the vehicle ran out of fuel, even though the fuel gauge did not display an empty reading. an authorized dealer was notified and the contact was informed that the fuel sending unit would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 90,000.

I have a xterra 2005, i have two friends that have the same car, same year. they received from nissan a letter that said, that the fuel gauge was faulty and that they need to get it fixed, warranty was extended. mine is not working. called the dealer, they said i have no warranty, and it seems it is a problem with some nissan models 2005 and -06. *tr

The fuel gauge is malfunctioning, i completely filled up the vehicle with gas started the engine and it still read empty. it took a couple of days to move up to showing full but now i have a check engine light. i researched this issue and many other nissan owners are experiencing or have experienced this problem with their vehicle around 50,000 miles. this is an issue nissan needs to take care of with so many people experiencing the same issue, it is obviously a defect in their manufacturing and is very pricey for the customer to fix!

I own a 2005 nissan xterra. my problem started with the fuel leveling system and my check engine light coming on. it was the fuel leveling sender. my fuel was not registering correctly at all. next came stalling of my suv. i would be driving and it would act as if it was running out of gas and cut off. that turn out to be the emc, in which i paid for but was reimburse because nissan issued a recall for the emc. this did not fix the fuel leveling sender problem. a few months later, my suv was having a "hard crank". it just did not want to turn over. it would stall while driving. i would just cut off. i took that to a dealership and they said it was the cam sensors. so, i had the cam sensors replaced and i had the fuel level sender replaced. it was recommended that i have a mult-point inspection, so i had everything with that replace. i spent a $1000, only for my check engine light to come back on the next day. i took it back to the dealership for them to tell me now it is the catalyst converters and both needs to be replace. the price for both parts alone was $1300. i do not understand why so many xterra owners are having these types of problems and nissan are not responsible for fixing them. they will offer an extended warranty after the fact, but by the time the problem occur a 2005 does not qualify for the extended warranty. the catalyst converters affects the clean air for your vehicle. this is a safety issue. *tr

Fuel gauge is not working, service engine soon is on all the time. *tr

Fuel gauge stays at empty and service engine soon light come on. *tr

2005 xterra with 60,000, p0463 computer error, which is the fuel level sending unit. (sensor a, circuit high input)

The fuel sending unit failed on my 2005 nissan xterra causing me to run out of gas on the highway. i needed to walk approximately 2 miles on highway to contact a tow truck. *tr

The fuel sending unit is bad on my 2005 nissan xterra it is throwing a p0463 code and after some research i found it an apparent problem in most 2nd generation xterra's and frontiers. the problem is that the fuel sending unit tells the gauge how much gas is in the tank and since it is now working the gauge is not reading the proper amount of gas which can lead to a accident when the vehicle runs out of fuel. *tr

P0463 error code fule level sensor. *tr

Fuel gauge went inop at approx 90,000 miles. nissan had extended the fuel gauge warranty to 72,000 which is ridiculous considering most xterra's, pathfinders, and frontiers have this problem. this should be a recall, not a warranty extension. this is a safety issue. running out of gas on the highway is dangerous. *tr
