I drive a 2005 nissan xterra. the service engine light turned on after i filled my vehicle with gas and the gas gauge read empty. *tr
2005 nissan xterra se, fuel sending unit is erratic and doesn't read proper amount of fuel in tank. this could be a serious safety concern for anyone who actually uses their truck out in the desert thinking they have more fuel then is indicated. quite often the gauge will drop down to empty and i've gone to fill the truck up just in case and end up putting only a few gallons of fuel in the truck. this has happened multiple times, although its not a safety concern i do believe that the gauge showing the tank is at 3/4 or more then dropping down to 1/4 tank (the actual amount of fuel) is one. my biggest complaint is that nissan has issued a recall for models earlier then the 2005 and the models from 2006 forward. why is it that these models get the recall and not the 2005 models? the component that is failing in both the earlier and later models is the exact same part. *tr
2005 nissan xterra fuel level sensor malfunction. apparently its extremely common and nissan isn't doing anything about it.
This '05 xterra had a thorough check out & diagnostic. then 500 miles later, at around 46000 miles, when the fuel indicator was at 1/2 tank- the needle suddenly plunged to below empty, a light came on and the service engine soon light came on. this was all very alarming, and we were stuck in bumper-bumper traffic in a bad part of phoenix when it happened. it wasn't hot out, just a big traffic jam in 5:00 rush, and we were nowhere near a gas station. it was terrible, and we were very scared to be stranded. after that we bought a huge gas can, and just drove around with 10 gallons of gas just in case. that is terrible, to have to drive wondering if when you'll actually run out of gas, vs. just being told you are out of gas.this started happening during the beginning of our cross-country trip to the coast and back. it was an issue the entire time, and very nerve wracking. nissan should fix this, since i've returned from our trip and found that 100's of people are having exact same problem! this is a faulty part, and it makes me wonder what else will go wrong. this is the first nissan our family has had, and i am afraid we might not be buying another one, and telling others to steer clear of nissan. *tr
The fuel sending unit on my 2005 nissan xterra failed at 50105 miles. this appears to be a common problem and it is under recall *but not for my year/vin). this is a manufacturer's defect and nissan should extend the recall to cover all 2005-2010 xterras. observed problem: 1. service engine light 2. code: p0463 3. fuel gauge no longer working (filled tank showing half filled). *tr
Service engine light came on and fuel gauge completely unreliable. fuel gauge would read empty with full fuel and then change to various readings. *tr
Check engine soon light illuminated. gas gauge inaccurate. gas light illuminated when plenty of gas is still in tank. dte feature no longer shows numbers only dashes. only 66,000 miles on vehicle. this problem started around 64,000 miles. *tr
The fuel level sensor on my 2005 nissan xterra stopped working as i was driving to work. the dealership wants $500 to fix the sensor which was a known problem and recalled on earlier and later models of this truck. and is also a common problem for other xterra owners. please recall this part. fuel level sensors last much longer than this is other makes and models of vehicles. *tr
Filled up gas tank & check engine light came on. autozone did a diagnostic & found po463. my wife has noticed erratic fuel-gauge operation for some time, but only mentioned it since the check-engine light came on. she has also noticed the mileage displayed has not agreed with the displayed fuel-level, which she thought something had happened that changed her gas mileage...which had not. we drive this vehicle mainly on the freeway, as my wife is a college student in the rn program. in our location, she drives along with may semi-trucks going to/from canada. having our vehicle run out of gas on this freeway, with the amount of trucks per hr could be devastating, if attempting to get to a shoulder safely. we have owned this vehicle since new. this is unacceptable that we must rely on faulty factory instrumentation. other years have this same defect & have been recalled. are we waiting for the death toll to increase before acting on something that is such an obvious problem that can fail & cause the vehicle to stall at highway speeds? this is an obvious problem that requires recall & repair. *tr
In the past month i have experienced a series of anomalies with my fuel gauge. i initially noticed this when i completely refilled my gas tank only to notice that the gauge showed 7/8ths full. it seemed odd, but i didn't think it was an issue as the pump may have automatically shut off prematurely. turns out to not be the case. on my next trip to the gas station, upon refilling the gas tank, my gauge only read a half tank. upon my next trip in the vehicle, the gauge read properly. however, subsequent trips the gauge read sometimes more than it should and sometimes less than it should. for example, after going 78 miles the gauge still read "full", and then after going 96 miles the gauge read "half full". after refilling the gas tank this last time, the gauge read 3/4 of a tank. the next trip the gauge read "full". subsequent trips the gauge reads sometimes more than it should and sometimes less than it should. the last couple of trips the gauge showed the same amount each time even though i have driven more than 60 miles. i took my vehicle to the nearest nissan dealer (where i've had service performed before) to check for a recall as i had heard there were vehicles with this same issue. apparently, nissan has issued the recall for "some" models and years but not for mine. they offered to "diagnose" the problem, for their usual shop fee naturally. you should be aware that this issue is not limited to the model years allowed in the recall. i have been reading on online forum with many 2005 xterras that are experiencing this same issue. i am less than pleased with the response from the dealership. i should not have to pay to diagnose a known problem; much less pay to have it fixed. i am issuing this complaint in hopes that you will do the right thing and realize the extent of this problem and include the 2005 model year in the existing recall. *tr
At 49500 my 2005 nissan xterra got serv. eng. soon light on. code p0463. had code read means fuel level sensor bad. gas gauge ok .will cost $600 + to replace. this is a common problem w/nissan. please initiate a recall. *tr
On my 2005 nissan xterra the service light came on and my fuel tank always reads empty. dealer states its a faulty fuel sensor but wont fix for free. i found online that this is a vary common problem and was directed to this site. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. the contact noticed that the fuel gauge sensor was reading inaccurately and she was unable to determine how much gasoline was actually in the vehicle. the failure was similar to nhtsa campaign id number 10v075000 ( fuel system, gasoline:storage:auxillary tank). the vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic test and concluded that the fuel system sensor needed to be replaced. the contact informed the manufacturer who stated that since the vehilce was no longer under warranty they would not be able to provide any additional assistance. the current mileage was approximately 90,000. the failure mileage was unknown.
I have a 2005 nissan xterra that has an issue with the fuel sending unit. the gas gauge takes a long time to register that the tank is full and now the service engine light is on. i have read many forums where people with both the xterra and pathfinder are having the same issue. they did a recall on the 2001-2003 xterra for the same problem. how is this not a recall. this is an expense that owners should not have to bear as it is a very common problem. consumers need help with this issue. *tr
I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. i went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. after returning home and doing research, i went online to x.nissanhelp.com after performing a search, i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 30k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600. *tr
I had less than 1/4 of a tank of gas, when the service engine soon light came on. on my way home, i stopped by auto zone and had the code checked. it came up with po463, which indicated the fuel sending sensor. i immediately stopped and filled up. the gauge appeared to go to full. upon searching the internet i found this is a common problem and was recalled on several nissan models between 2000-2004. i talked to the dealer, but since my 5 year warranty expired this month and i have 63,000 miles on my xterra, the repair wouldn't be covered. the cost of repair would be around $600 - $700. i decided to just keep up with my mileage to make sure i don't run out of gas. since then i have driven 270 miles. the service engine soon light went off around 200 miles, but i am still nervous that the unit is malfunctioning and it could reoccur. my complaint is that if this problem was recalled in previous models, and it was considered a safety hazard that could result in a major traffic accident, why isn't is being recalled on the 2005-2007 models? *tr
Fuel gauge faulty. reads higher than normal. could cause driver to run out of fuel. service engine code p0463 fuel sensor. *tr
Went to the gas station to full up my xterra. when i started it back up the gauge read 1/4 of a tank. i went back through the line and got only $1.00 more worth of gas before the attendant said it was completely full. over the day the gauge started to creep back up until it read full. one day later the service engine soon light came on. took it to knecht's to hook it to the diagnostic machine. came back error code po463 "fuel level sensor a circuit high input." apparently this has happened to numerous xterra and pathfinder owners around the 44000 mile mark or the 57000 mile mark. my xterra just turned over 44,000 miles. *tr
The fuel sensor/sending unit on my 2005 nissan xterra has failed and now my gas gauge does not register a full tank and my service engine light remains on. this is apparently an extremely expensive and common failure for the xterra and this same part was recalled on the 2004 model. *tr
2005 nissan xterra. gas gauge works sporadically, never know how much gas is in tank. could cause an accident by running out of gas. there is a recall on nissan vehicles for 2006 and 2008 with the same problem but all from 2005 to 2010 are having the same problem. *tr
Gas gauge on my 2005 nissan xterra stopped working. told it was a fuel sending unit. i only have 79,000 miles on the vehicle. dealer tells me if i don't get it changed the vehicle will eventually not start. this would not be a good thing given the right circumstance. *tr
The fuel gauge on the vehicle no longer reads properly indicating inaccurate levels of gasoline. *tr
The following recall is identical to symptoms i observe with my 2005 nissan x-terra, since 10/2008: recall #38731: nissan is recalling certain model year 2006 and model year 2008 frontier, xterra and pathfinder vehicles. the molded fuel tank shells can deform, causing the fuel sender float arm to contact an embossment molded into the tank shell causing the instrument panel fuel gauge to show that the vehicle has approximately one quarter tank when the fuel tank is empty. *tr
Nissan xterra 2005 -- faulty fuel sensor, fuel gauge does not report gas in tank. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. the contact stated that the fuel gauge was displaying an incorrect fuel level reading. the check engine was also illuminated on the instrumental panel . the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was advised that the fuel sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 110,000.
I have a 2005 nissan xterra 4x4. just recently i filled up my gas tank to full, but when i looked at my fuel gauge it just stayed at the half mark. it took a couple of hours before it climbed to full. my mileage was at 44,950 miles when this first occurred. it is still happening everytime i have to fill my gas tank. i keep filling at half because i'm afraid i will run out of gas on the freeway. i've noticed some other 2005 xterra owners had the same problem. they should have a recall on this because of their malfunctioning part. i called nissan about this but they told me my car was not covered because my car vin# was not under it. *tr
My 2005 nissan xterra se has approximately 73,000 miles on it, and the fsu (fuel sending unit) has stopped working. in other words, the gas gauge does not read accurately. for example, yesterday i filled the tank, and the gas gauge reads anywhere from a quarter-tank to a half-tank (changes sporadically). nissan has issued a recall for this issue for some 2006 and 2008 models, but from my online research, this issue seems to be occurring with other model years. the vehicle was significantly redesigned with the 2005 model, and subsequent years have seen only minor updates to this redesign. so it stands to reason that the recall should be expanded to include 2005 models, when everything was redesigned. clearly, not knowing how much gas you have in the tank is a safety issue, as one could end up running out of gas on the freeway, or out in a rural area at night, or some other unsafe scenario. *tr
I have a 2005 nissan xterra and recently i had my "service engine soon" light come on. i found out that earlier nissan xterras and pathfinders had the same issue. it was a code p0463, fuel gauge detectionproblem. the earlier models got this to be a recall, but the newer xterras have not. to get this fixed i can only get it done by the dealer and is around a $600 repair. *tr
My 2005 nissan xterra fuel gauge has stopped working and now the check engine light is on and will not go off. after research i have found that this is a common problem with the nissan xterra for many consumers. *tr
Noticed fuel gauge sticking at current level when filling tank about last three fill ups. on my 2005 nissan xterra. filled it up tonight and drove home 1/2 mile pulled into the drive way and noticed check engine light on. used my obdii tester and got a code p0463 fuel level sensor circuit high input. i looked this up on the internet and found countless people with the same issue on nissan xterras and pathfinders. i also found the bad info on just what is involved in fixing this issue. i understand that this is not a life issue unless you run out of gas on the way to the emergency room. or the emergency response team is in a nissan ect. its hard to believe that this is not a recall item. *tr
Have 2005 nissan xterra and the fuel gauge reads empty or a 1/4 fuel then it shoots up to full. we never know how much fuel is in there. it has been below freezing here in the north and i am scared my wife and kids will be stuck out of fuel someday soon. there are thousands of people with this problem, apparently it is the same problem for a bunch of nissan trucks and suvs around the same year. please help! *tr
Fuel sending unit, shows i have 1/4 tank of fuel but was actually empty. causing my car to die on the side of the road multiple times as the gauge/fuel sending unit is faulty showing the incorrect unit. *tr
I pulled into a gas station to fill up my tank 2 weeks ago and after filling up the tank left the gas station and realized that the gauge did not move. it was still stuck at 1/4 of a tank. i drove the car all week and the fuel gauge slowly went up to 1/2 of a tank however i kept track of the mileage and had to fill the tank again by the next week. the tank again was not working properly and my wife who also drives the vehicle does not keep track of the mileage as closely as i do and i am worried that she will have a problem with running out of fuel on a major highway during rush hour. after the 2nd week of the fuel gauge not working properly today i started the vehicle and the service engine soon light came on and stayed on for the entire 35 miles that i traveled to work. i did some research on the internet and found that many people have complaints for this same issue and found that it may be the fuel sending unit. i see that the 2006 xterra's have been recalled however mine is a 2005 and wonder why it is also not being recalled? i fear for the safety of my wife driving this vehicle. *tr
I own a 2005 nissan xterra. my check engine light came on about 2 months ago. i used a code reader to read the problem and it stated it was the fuel level sensor failing. i cleared the code from the computer and filled my gas tank and the levels seemed half way accurate. the check engine light came on once more just recently. after much research, i have found it to be a faulty fuel sensor gauge that is an all in one fuel pump, filter, and sensor unit. feel free to research this yourself. nissan has had fuel pump and filter issues with 2005+ truck/ suv models. i believe they recalled them in the eastern us, but not here in the west. it appears to me that it is a defective part on the car. they claim it is not covered under warranty and is a "wear and tear" item. this is ridiculous! it is a part that should last over 125k miles... but not. they need to fix the problem they created. it will cost me $600 dollars to fix it! in this economy its impossible for me! basically you can run out of fuel anywhere at any time if the sensor is not functioning correctly. this can cause an accident or cause you to get stranded in a bad part of town. both of which are life threatening. *tr
I have a 2005 nissan xterra. the truck starting having a fuel gauge problem, but i didn't think much of it because my car still was running. the problem started about 3 months ago 4/1/10 where i would put a full tank of gas and the fuel reader would show that is was still empty. about 3 days ago on 7/28/10 i was about to get freeway, thank god that i had not get on freeway way when out of a sudden the truck starting shaking and then eventually died. i was stuck a traffic lights for about 10 mins. i tried to start it again and pushed gas but still no luck. until a 3rd time tried it and then it started. when this happened i realized i had to take it to the dealer. i took it to my expert mechanic and the said it was a control modulator and told me that is was going to be $1,000.00. at this point in my life i am not able to afford that, but i need my vehicle running. please advise what can we do and if there will be a recall. i also saw there are many more complaints about this and this can be dangerous for anyone that owns a nissan xterra 2005. *tr
We have a 2005 nissan xterra, one day we filled it at a gas station and noticed right after leaving the station that the gauge still said a quarter of a tank, so we pulled into another gas station a few miles down to see if it would take more gas and it only took $0.60 worth, so when we started the engine again, the service engine soon light was on. as we were driving down the road the gauge slowly started rising to the full mark. we had to fill it again before we got back from our trip and it did the same thing, didn't register our full tank and then slowly went up to the full mark, and the service engine soon light has stayed on the whole time. we cant tell if we still have fuel or not. *tr
2005 nissan xterra stalled causing the vehicle to jerk while in reverse. the vehicle had struck a steel beam causing significant damage. the fuel gauge was misreading, showing my truck had gas while in reality it was empty. *tr
Fuel sending unit problem. fuel gauge reads empty no matter what fuel level actually is. this turns on service engine soon light and low fuel level light. code read relates to low fuel. problem is intermittent at this time. from reading posts online this problem seems to be very common among many nissan vehicles though the dealer will not repair if vehicle is past 36,000 mile warranty. *tr
Erratic function of dash fuel level gauge, gauge may go from one half tank to "below empty" and warning light comes on without warning. check engine dash warning light also comes on and stays on, if codes are checked, only code stored is "fuel sending unit-low voltage". minutes later gauge may return to what appears to be normal function, but check engine light stays on. gauge cannot be trust to display fuel level accurately and may result in a traffic crash if vehicle looses power while in operation. this issue has been documented by numerous 2005 nissan xterra owners but nissan chooses to ignore the safety issue and refuses to recall the defective fuel sending unit. *tr
The fuel sending unit on my 2005 x-terra has stopped working properly. it shows that i'm empty right after i fill it up and decides to work after about 50 miles after fill up, then with about a quarter tank of gas left, it says that it's empty, plus the "distance to empty" calculator stopped working and constantly blinks - -. although this has been a heavily recorded issue with many nissan vehicles for over 10 years they still refuse to help me out with resolving this issue and claims that it will cost me over $600 to fix it.
My 2005 nissan xterra has experienced a failure of the fuel sending unit which causes the incorrect amount of fuel to be displayed on the gas gauge, causing the potential for running out of fuel on the highway and a significant danger to the driver and passengers. nissan is currently recalling model year 2006 and up vehicles but has not yet included the 2005s. it is imperative that nissan include the 2005 models as well. *tr
My 2005 nissan xterra has a fuel gauge problem which causes the gauge to not display the correct amount of fuel in the tank. it can show empty after a fill up. it is impossible to know how much fuel is in the tank. this could cause me to run out of gas wile operating the vehicle which could lead to a crash. *tr
Fuel gauge reads full, then without cause reads empty. without an accurate fuel reading this may cause vehicle to run out of fuel at a dangerous time. *tr
2005 nissan xterra fuel level gauge gives inaccurate readings. this is the same part number that was determined to be faulty in the 2006-2010 xterra. nissan so far has acknowledged there is a problem since they redesigned the unit but is only recalling 2006+. *tr
After filling up gas from 1/4th tank full. the indicator still reads 1/4th tank. then check engine light came on. i researched online and found many reports of this and people asking why it hasn't been recalled. it is apparently a faulty fuel sending unit that corrodes after 30,000 miles and is not covered. *tr
Re a 2005 nissan xterra fuel sending unit defective at 34,000 miles.
Gas sensor does not work. car ran out of gas and almost was in an crash. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. while traveling at speeds of 35 mph, the check engine light illuminated on the dashboard and within seconds, the fuel level indicator dropped from one half tank to empty. the dealer replaced the fuel sending unit and fuel gauge. the failure mileage was 47,000 and the current mileage was 48,000. updated 05/19/1. *lj updated 06/03/10*bf updated 06/10/10.*jb
