We have classified the 174 complaints from 2004 Nissan Titan about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Noticed reduced braking effectiveness, looked under vehicle at rear brakes, fluid has been leaking from faulty rear axle seals, causing fluid to contaminate brake parts, creating a major safety concern. *tr
Rear axle seal leak. 3rd failure of same seal in 6 months. failure results in differential fluid leaking onto brakes resulting in braking limitations and failure, potential for fire. dealer is presumably going to replace seal... again. *tr
Both rear axle seals are leaking on my 2004 nissan titan. the drivers side was replaced once already. when the seals leak the gear oil spreads onto the brake backing and interior of the wheel causing potential brake problems. *tr
Rear axle seals leak causing differential fluid to seep out onto the brake rotors. both front and rear brakes have had problems. *tr
During routine service checks, noticed rear end lube leaking from the rear, passenger side outer seal. lube was leaking onto the rear brake also creating a safety hazard. replaced seal and brakes on rear of vehicle. *tr
Haven't repaired yet will not file under extended coverage, 2004 nissan titan crewcab 5.6 liter, rear end housing and axle seals leaking, noticed it about 2 months ago, had to add some fluid to rear differential, on my own. *tr
Axel seal leak on a long 2,500 vacation drive that could have caused a bad accident if all the gear oil would have been lost. luck it was discovered soon enough that i could fill the diff back up. seals have been replaced previously as well as the whole axel on a different occasion. these axel and axel seal problems may cause a deadly accident one day. my truck only has 54,000 miles on it. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan titan with a dana rear axle. i was notified by a nissan dealer that the axle seal on the drivers side was leaking and needed to be replaced. the axle fluid was draining down the rear brake which could significantly reduce braking performance and result in an unsafe driving situation. *tr
Rear wheel seals continue to leak even after being replaced, differential and axle have too much play in the pumpkin area, causing the seals to break. the dealer had my truck for (14) days doing absolutely nothing after disassembling the differential due to a conflict between them and my extended warranty on who was going to pay for the ($3,000.00) rear. this has left me in limbo so i contacted the manufacturer to discuss the modified rear that the dealer told me that the manufacturer had to resolve the problem. i am currently waiting to hear back from the manufacturer. they know about the problem on these 2004 titans and have a modified replacement rear, then why is there not a recall?shouldn't the manufacturer be responsible and have decency to correct their problem free of charge to the consumer? *tr
Passenger rear axle seal fluid leak onto rear brakes. *tr
Rear differential failure. rear differential needed total replacement. dealer inspection noted that if vehicle was driven any further a total lock up or inability to be driven would occur. appears to be a long list of rear axel/differential failures with this vehicle. dealer noted it also appears to be a major problem that has occurred not just on high mileage vehicles. vehicle requires total replacement of rear axel. the vehicle showed no signs of failure. the gears in the differential break apart. *tr
My 2004 nissan titan kc se 4x4 has had rearend problems 3 months after i purchased my truck. i have had axle seals replaced, differential issues, and now for the 3rd time, the dealership has my truck over 4th of july weekend! the spider gears literally fell apart inside my differential. my warranty has expired and i have only 85,000 miles on it! this is something that shouldn't break! i do not tow, i rarely use 4-wheel drive! i heard a thumping noise coming from my rearend, so while getting another recall issue resolved had the dealership take a look....$3,500 worth of work! hudson nissan has been great through my ownership! they do all of my titan's maintenance, and they are the best! however, nissan needs to fix this issue....my truck is nearly paid off and to fix this is more than half what i owe left on the truck! *tr
Rear end seals leaking resulting in differential oil getting on rear brakes. *tr
Rear axle is leaking on both rotors as of now. *tr
At 55,000 miles the rear axle seals failed on my 2004 nissan titan. the seal failure caused a leak which saturated the rear brake apparatus and reduced its holding ability. i reported this to my local nissan dealer and it was repaired under warranty. i was told that an upgraded rear axle was installed to address the root cause of the premature seal failure. at 138,000 miles the rear axle seals have failed again despite regular fluid changes, and the rear brake apparatus is once again soiled with gear lube. i believe this constitutes a safety hazard and should be addressed as a recall. the dealer refuses to repair under warranty and states that there is no recall. based on my research, this is a very widespread failure on the nissan titan and there are thousands of other titan owners in the u.s. with the same problem. *js
Leaking rear axle seal on passenger side. *tr
Both rear axle seal leaks. *tr
Rear seal on 2004 nissan titan leaks. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan titan. while driving 5 mph, the contact heard a loud banging noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. he drove to his residence and the rear of the vehicle continued to make a clanking noise. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the rear axle and the gears inside the axle failed. the contact paid approximately $3,300 to repair the vehicle. the current and failure mileages were less than 67,400.
I own a 2004 nissan titan le 2 wheel drive with 74,600 miles. i found that i had a left rear axle seal leaking. took it to dealer to get it fix and was told that the right side should be replaced also but at $600.00 a crack to replace one side i could only afford to do the bad one. after researching the internet about other owners of titans having the same problems with their rear axle seals prematurely failing with low mileage i think niacin needs to look into this problem. it a sham that they charge you $500 to $600 to have these replaced when you can buy the bearings off the internet for $75.00.... *tr
I have an 04 nissan titan purchased 05 with 86,000 miles on it. the rear end started jerking around and causing the vehicle to be rendered useless during transport. the rear differential seals started to leak and within a week i herd a faint noise. the very next day while driving the vehicle was rendered inoperable. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan titan. while at a stop light, the contact heard a loud noise. afterwards, the vehicle accelerated. the vehicle was towed to a dealer and they stated that the rear differential failed and would cost $3,300 to repair. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure and current mileages were 79,000.
2004 nissan titan 4x4 broken spider gears in rearend and axle seals leaking. 66,000 miles on truck. *tr
Rear axle seal leaks; 2004 nissan titan. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan titan le 4x4 crew cab with 77k miles and both rear outer axle seals leak profusely. this has been a known problem with numerous titan owners and i feel that it needs to be reported to the nhtsa. i have oem stock wheels and tires on it and don't have any suspension or driveline modifications. *tr
The rear end is making horrible clanking sound and took to a shop, they said it was going out. *tr
Rear axle oil seal failure. leaked oil on to brake pads causing reduced brake performance. *tr
Made a right hand turn and boom a loud bang followed by no forward movement while in drive and loud grinding noise from the rear of the vehicle. driveshaft still spins while in gear. sounds like another nissan titan rear differential failure. *tr
Right side rear axle seal leaking differential fluid on brake drum. nissan titan 04 le. *tr
2004 nissan titan rear axle seal failure. first notice oil leaking from both axle seals when changing shocks at 41,000 miles. brought to dealer was told axle seals had failed and were going to be replaced under warranty, at 44,400 miles went to get inspection sticker and the parking brake failed, upon further investigating this was due to the fact that the seals had failed again and slung oil all over the rear brake system i would think this is a huge safety issue. this time they fixed the seals but i was told that they were failing due to the fact of a problem with the axle, now i am over the 5 year warranty and there telling me it my not be covered still waiting to hear. this seems to be a common problem and should be recalled to be fixed at nissans expense. one time this is going to happen and someone's brake are going to fail from the oil and cause a serious accident resulting in injury or death! something need to be done before its to late. *tr
2004 nissan titan king cab le. driver's side rear axle oil seal failed at some time prior to 52,000 mile inspection. oil observed on entire rear backing plate. *tr
My 2004 nissan titan recently started leaking gear oil from both axles in the rear. concurrently my brake pads starting absorbing the oil which in turn ruined my rotors, brake pads, and now is costing me a pretty penny to get it fixed. my mechanic said the local auto parts stores do not carry these bearings and seals and therefore must contact the original dealer to order them. after reading and following up on the additional complaints by many other titan owners, i am curious to find out what steps in nissan taking to recall these bad seals and bearings? why should us the owners have to fix costly repairs when nissan knows their production efforts were not properly tested before fielding the dealerships? please inform me how to get it fixed free of cost to me. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan titan, i have had to replace the rear axle seals twice already.(once march 2009 and once about 1.5 years ago. warranty covered, but i am getting close to my warranty limit. i know that this is also a safety issue, because the fluid leaks down on your brakes, which is a big factory fault. i was just hoping that someone could help me, and other titan owners, for the safety and money, out of pocket when warranty is up. nissan should be held responsible for this and come up with sometype of permanent fix. any help would be appreciated. *tr thank you brian castle
Rear axle seal leak on a 2004 nissan titan se king cab. both seals are leaking badly and saturating the brake pads with axle lubricant. *tr
Rear axle seals leak on driver side notice while getting an oil change. *tr
Rear axel failure in nissan titan. drivers side seal went out at 70k miles. *tr
Driver side rear axle seal leaking, fluid leaking onto brake assembly; left rear axle seal seeping. seals had been leaking for a while. on www.titantalk.com people have experienced numerous axle seal failures. nissan should recall all titans and pathfinders with this axle vent system and repair the vent with something better. until this is performed, axle seals will continue to fail and fluid will continue to potentially leak onto brake assemblies creating a safety hazard. *tr
Front axle just fell out of the front differential, resulting in a $2300 repair apparently not covered by my extended warranty there was no reason for it to break. *tr
My truck sounded slightly louder than normal on my short drive home. i was driving on a 35mph road and something didn't seem right. it sounded like my tires were out of alignment. i drove the half mile home on the 35mph road in 2wd. i pulled into my garage and looked at my tires and under my truck. everything looked normal. the next morning i noticed some oil on my garage floor. after further investigation i saw it was coming from my passenger side front axle seal. my axle was pulled loose from the differential because some weak clip that held the assembly together has broken. i researched the problem and found that several people have had the same exact problem. i contacted the local nissan dealer to get an estimate for repair. i was told that i had a one of a kind problem that they have never heard of. my local repair shop told me it would be several days to get parts and repair the damage. they estimated the cost would be between $350-$600 to replace the front right axle, axle seal, and clip. additional cost and parts would be necessary if any further damage was found in the differential. *tr
Front axle pops out of differential case. unknown damage inside case. *tr
The rear axle seals and pinion seals were blown out with no warning at all. problem was caused by a faulty vent that nissan has used on there titan pick up trucks. *tr
2004 nissan titan rearend failure just after extended warrenty!!no parts offered from dealer aftermarket parts are tring to pick up the slack . so far no luck!! *tr
Rear differential 2004 nissan titan failure never towed anything. brake warp and shake. these are obvious manufacture defect and nissan should fix them at no cost to owner. these are also critical safety issues. we are talking brake failure and possible rear end lock up. this is unheard of with a vehicle with this mileage. *tr
4 wheel drive control unit bad, 4x4 won't engage the units is defective that nissan has it in backorder nationally. *tr
The rear axle hub seals leaked after the 1st and only pulling ever done with my 2004 (4 x 2) se titan p/p. my vehicle is equipped with " big tow pkg." dealer replaced the entire rear axle. " no" pulling or towing done since replacement by dealer svc. done 12/24/2008 at 85,417 miles. however, a right/passenger seal leak noticed on 08/29/2012 at 152,247 miles. i was told by the regional warranty service manager that the issue had been resolved with an " upgraded better axle system " which would resolve the problem when the rear end was replaced. the rear axle diff. fluid leak is causing periodic braking issues and noises. i am very concerned about safe braking, especially when driving the vehicle in wet weather. needs to be addressed as a safety issue. *tr
Rear differential failure occurred suddenly while accelerating and changing lanes on ih-45 access road on the way to brother's college graduation. axle assembly replaced. repairs complete in 2 business days, rental provided. *tr
2004 nissan titan, last week i noticed while driving and turning corners there was banging coming from the rear of the truck. within 2 days the truck was undrivable...the driveshaft, while in gear would just spin inside the rear differential. the only way to drive vehicle was to place transmission into 4wd and use the front wheels to move the truck! *tr
I brought my 2004 nissan titan in for a routine oil change at 53,157 miles. the service tech informed me that my rear axel seal was leaking . dealer replaced seal, bearing, spacer & snap ring. this was covered under a 5 year extended warranty and took 6 hrs for the dealer to complete. parts: (1) seal-oil r # 43252-7s200 (1) bearing-re # 40210-7s210 (1) spacer axle # 43070-7s200 (1) ring-snap 01541-0001u. *tr
