We have classified the 49 complaints from 2009 Nissan Murano about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Total loss of electrical power while driving. engine dies lights go out vehicle rolls to a stop. put vehicle in park and electrical power return with no further action. please look in to this as my wife is now scared to drive her car at all. 2 occurrences in the past 2 weeks. no recalls shown but other years of this vehicle show same complaint. of this
Drive transfer case makes loud knocking noise and the awd button comes on and off, after research others reported this causes vehicle to suddenly stop at highway speeds
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan murano. when the vehicle accelerated, there was a loss of power and a delay at times before finally gaining speed. in other instances, the vehicle had a drastic reduction in speed. the alternator assembly was replaced more than twice, but the failure continued. the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 05v319000 (electrical system); however, the vehicle exhibited the same failure as the recall campaign. moses nissan (300 maccorkle ave, st albans, wv 25177, (304) 727-2921) was notified of the failure. in addition, the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v916000 (service brakes, hydraulic), but a repair appointment had not been scheduled. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.
Leak in transfer case. if not repaired will cause car to seize up and stop suddenly. as i have researched this it seems to be a common problem
Transmition transfer case leak and the trasmition slip
My 2009 nissan murano which i bought in february 2014 from an authorized nissan dealer (morrie's minnetonka) had a faulty cvt transmission. after dealing with the problem for almost a year, which includes but not limited to the following: loss of power, transmission jerking, transmission slipping, cvt coolant hose leaks and failures which put my life, my kids life in danger multiple times. i reached out to nissan usa warranty office numerous times for no avail and ultimately replaced the transmission at a cost of $4,299. nissan refused to cover the cost and completely ignored my repeated plea for a response. i would like to bring the issue to the nhtsa hoping you will 1) conduct the faulty cvt transmissions of nissan. i learnt that there are pending legal issues that the company is dealing with as of today and i am happy to hand over all my vehicle inspection documents in order to help the investigation. 2) as i mentioned earlier the cvt transmission issue and sudden stops in the middle of the highway repeatedly put my life, my kids life and other drivers at risk. i am sure other nissan murano owners are dealing with the same problem and pursuing this investigation and resolving in a timely manner will protect the public from unnecessary danger caused by the manufacturer. 3) nissan should take responsibility and cover owners like myself for a mistake that in my opinion big enough to demand a recall.
In june 2018, my car started stopping suddenly while driving. i took it to the mechanic who change my alternator. the problem persists. i change my brakes, still the problem persists. i took my car to the dealer , they informed me that my car has abs module recalled and that was the problem. they changed it. the car could not drive out of the parking lot thus, i returned it to the service center. they diaganed transmission issues, they said they fix it. the car stop within three blocks and on the highway. i returned it back to nissan service center, now, they said it's the alternator. i informed them that i have the alternator changed lest than 30 days. the car is a lemon because of the abs module that nissan canot fix or unable to fix. every time that car is in motion, the abs light turn on and the car stops abrutly. i have two teenagers who drives my car to go to school. it becomes a hazard and unsafe due to the recall of the abs module .
Well lets start with the engine stalling and not being able to get on the highway cause the engine lacks the power to even move. the right passenger side air bag light keeps flasing no matter what it does'nt go off.there is a rattling noise coming from the rear right side under the carriage. the left rear tire it lobsided and when it rains the rear of the car feels like its on ice and sways side to side it's an accident waiting to happen the tire sensor light never goes off even if you inflate to proper range and dont get me started on the transmission slipping hope that some one in your company does something about these issues before someone gets seriously hurt you may end up in court fix them before some one gets hurt....all this in motion. street and highway. documentation yes the whole car is documentation.
Cvt transmission is skipping. cannot drive the vehilce. it is broken down more than i drive it. only 109,000 mileage
I have less than 57,000 miles on my 2009 murano. at 46,000 miles, i had to have my failed transmission replaced and i'm having issues again with it slipping into low gear. the dealership couldn't reproduce the issue, so nothing has been done to address it. i had to take my murano in for service again because i almost got into an accident when my brakes didn't work at 30 mph and i had to quickly change lanes to avoid an accident. there wasn't any brake pressure and i had to push the brake peddle to the floor before it stopped.
Traveling at highway speeds car will just slow up for no reason, like the transmission is failing or the engine loses power, climbs hills very slowly.
I have pulled into traffic only to have my car not accelerate causing the car behind me to slam on their brakes. today, the car behind me had to pull over into the shoulder to avoid hitting me. over the past several years, i've taken my car into nissan service complaining about a rumbling noise/feeling, the car intermittently fails to and/or hesitates when accelerating. the cause of these symptoms were never diagnosed properly. now the symptoms occur more frequently. the loss of speed and/or the ability of not gaining speed along with the normal flow of traffic could cause somebody to hit and/or kill me! this is very dangerous, today i was lucky by not getting hit. a few weeks ago, because the symptoms happens more consistently nissan diagnosed the problem as a transmission (cvt) issue. although they have admitted a defect in their cvt transmissions, they refused to repair it because it's out of warranty. i have records which shows i took my car to several different nissan service depts. complaining about this issue when the transmission was under warranty. this is a major safety issue, just doing a quick google search, i discovered nissan's cvt has allegedly been blamed for a couple of deaths and multiple car accidents. it's a hazard to drive my vehicle, and nissan should recall and replace all of these transmissions. as i said previously, today i was lucky, the next time i may not be! attached: unfortunately after my near miss incident this morning the other driver kept going so i don't have any documentation to provide. but i did attached an ongoing email thread i have with nissan consumer affairs which basically captures the communication i've had with them up until this point. the only thing missing is on july 5, 2017 i received a call from wade (nissan consumer affairs) stating they still are not going to replace the transmission.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan murano. the contact stated that the vehicle hesitated when started. the contact also stated that the vehicle went backwards when the contact attempted to move forward. there were no warning indicators illuminated. additionally, the contact stated that the alternator drained the battery. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (nissan of rosekind, louisiana) where the software was updated, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 84,000.
After i purchased the car 2-17-17, i began have delayed acceleration when pulling out into traffic from a full stop or after coming to a near stop. this happened occasionally at first, but has become more and more regular. while driving at a slow speed the other day behind a few cars, i was unable to get the car to accelerate for close to a minute. also, occasionally after reaching a higher gear, the transmission seems to stick in a lower gear.
Transmission problem. car will not accelerate after stop. when press the gas petal car will jerk and not speed. sometime restarting will work. it happened in freeway during idle traffic.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan murano. the contact noticed that the front of the vehicle was leaking. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transfer case needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 98,000.
Car stopped suddenly while driving at highway speed. turned out to be a transfer case problem where the transfer case seeped fluid with out indication until it ran dry. this is a known mfg defect of the murano yet there has been no corrective action by nissan and the repair is $3500.00. we are lucky there was no accident in this case.
My 2009 nissan murano le has 117k miles. i had extended warranty which expired at 100k miles & 7 months ago. the transfer case is leaking & nissan informed me it needs to be completely replaced costing me $3350. the transfer case seals have been replaced twice before on this vehicle at 30k miles and 75k miles. upon doing research, the transfer case appears to be a very common problem with nissans. i was also informed by a nissan ace certified tech that the faulty transfer case is a factory defect, and there were revisions made on the transfer case on march 24, 2014; therefore, the newer, revised transfer case "should not" fail again. well, after unsuccessful negotiations with the local nissan service department, i contacted consumer affairs to request a partial good-will payment (at least pay for the parts since it's such a common issue and a design defect and i'll pay for the labor), but they have refused. this leaves consumers with defected products which will end up costing consumers thousands of dollars because nissan refuses to stand behind their products. what a dishonest way to do business.
I have owned two nissan vehicles. the first nissan i owned was an 08 altima that had a transmission issue at 25,000 miles. my current nissan is an 09 murano. this vehicles transmission started to make noise at 116,000 miles. at the time i brought it into a shop and was told that nissan has a lot of transmission issues. because i was told that my warranty was 60,000 miles, i did not bring my vehicle to nissan. after a few months we decided to look up if there were any recalls. my husband found on the nissan site that due to issues they had with the cvt transmission they extended their warranty from 60,000 miles to 120,000 miles. we were never notified of this. i immediately brought my car into nissan and had them look at it. they said my transmission was bad and never mentioned the warranty. i called nissan of north america's customer service and had my case reviewed. they advised me that there wasn't a recall but only a warranty extension. they offered to pay 50% since i was now at 123,000 miles. i let them know i had documentation showing i had the issue prior but they have not done anything further.
Getting rumbling noise when vehicle is running on low gears. happening from last 3 years. online found other complaining the same problem.
It does not accelerate from a stop very well. sometimes i try to pull into traffic and cannot accelerate fast enough and feel terribly frightened that i will be hit from behind as a result. it seems to be worse when going uphill. after 5 seconds maybe it kicks in and begins accelerating. this is an extremely dangerous problem. i feel like it will cause an accident.
Nissan dealer told me that "transfer case has a heavy seep" which will cost $1270.00 to fix. i see on the internet that the transfer case on the nissan murano is a huge problem which should result in a recall. i which to add my complaint to those already submitted.
The transfer case is leaking fluid.
I was told by the dealership that my 2009 nissan murano has a bad leak in the transfer case, and that it will take 15 hours of labor to fix a $130 gasket. after reading the complaint forums for nissan murano, i have learned this is a very common problem with muranos. i have contacted nissan to cover the repair work as this is a known and common issue with their muranos, and my vehicle is now off warranty. they refused to assist, stating that they are unaware of any such issues with the murano. they are in complete denial. why isn't this a recall if it is such a wide-spread problem? *tr
The car was stalled at 70 miles/hour . the engine was running but it was not engaging any gears neither drive/lift nor reverse. no check engine light indication was lit up. i was lucky to pull over safely on the right shoulder from middle land on interstate. *tr
My vehicle was exhibiting a burnt rubber smell from the engine compartment. i opened the hood and saw like smoke coming from the rear passenger side of the engine compartment. i took my vehicle to the dealer for service and noted this incident on the work order. the service technician later informed me that the transfer case was leaking fluid and was blowing onto the exhaust pipe and under carriage. they said that is what caused the burnt rubber smell, not a drive belt. the warranty for this component expired at 60,000 miles. i was charged approx. $1700 for this repair before discounts. i asked the service technician if this is a common repair, he said, "yes, we do a lot of these." i told him that i was not satisfied with this repair to the point that it appears to be a reliability issue. using the fmea approach - severity is high to the fact that without gear fluid the transfer case will cease and cause catastrophic failure. this type of failure is not detectable from the perspective of normal user maintenance. the fluid can only be checked by a mechanic from the underside of the vehicle and not from the top of the engine compartment (i.e. dipstick). occurrence or frequency appears to be common per the service technician's comments. i am requesting that the nhtsa investigate this issue. i suspect other customers have been impacted by this know defect (bad seal).
Failure with 2009 nissan murano transfer case after 60,000 miles seems to be a big problem and nissan is not taking responsibility , causing the customer thousands of dollars for repairs, seems that their is a defect , where you hear a humming noise coming from your front passenger side tire and no check engine light to alert you some thing is wrong until you shows up at a dealer ship to check out the noise and get bang for $3000, this a con game nissan is using to ripoff hard american working people, this con game need to be investigated, since their are so many complaints from murano owners about this existing problem . *tr
In stop and go traffic, the air conditioner had the sweet smell of maple syrup and a few minutes later the check engine light came on. within seconds, the car stuttered each time i attempted to accelerate. once out of traffic, i looked and saw a large amount of coolant dripping from the car. the car was towed to the dealer who confirmed coolant built up pressure in radiator, hoses and transmission. cvt transmission is flooded with coolant and water, radiator and all hoses will need replacement. *tr
Was driving along, and heard a loud knocking sound. thought it was the transmission, so i took it in to a dealership, and they said i had a cracked transfer case. nissan extended the warranty for there transmissions, but not for their there transfer case. my vehicle could have seized at any moment when i was driving. it sounds like there are allot of nissan muranos that have this same issue. *tr
Dealer says my car is leaking oil from the oil transfer case. i have not had any evidence in my driveway of any oil leak. this is the first time i heard of it, but even the repairman at the dealership says nissan knows it's a defective part. now i see on line plenty of information on this. why wasn't this a recall issue? how many folks can afford $3500 for a repair that is not covered under warranty? i can't. *tr
While my husband was driving the vehicle into work, started out driving normal. then about 6 miles from home it all of a sudden started a jerking motion and then the vehicle came to a complete stop. he was able to get the vehicle off the road. had the car towed to a nissan dealer thinking it was the transmission which would have been covered under the extended warranty. was contacted this morning and told it was the transfer case which is not covered under the warranty for the cvt transmission which is going to cost us $3600 to have repaired along with the $125 to get it towed to the dealer. we have had this vehicle for only 4 months. considering how much these vehicles cost they should not be falling apart this quickly! i believe if they are willing to extend the warranty for the cvt transmission they should be willing to take care of any parts that could be affected by it. *tr
Purchased a 2009 nissan murano. has only 72,000 miles and is only 5 years old. according to the local nissan dealer, the transfer case apparently went bad and is not covered under the extended cvt warranty. instead, they quoted me a price of over $3,000 and no guarantee that the repair will even fix the problem. my complaint stems from a great deal of research that shows nissan is familiar with the problem, that the transfer case design is flawed, and yet they refuse to recall the item. the problem appears so prevalent, that i am having trouble even locating a transfer case to replace it with. as a single father of three (3) boys, i do not have the resources for this repair, especially given that i attempted to purchase a relatively new vehicle to avoid having to make such costly repairs. i would hope your organization would step in on behalf of the american consumer for what is, in essence, the repetitive extortion of murano purchasers and not wait until the untimely death of a murano driver and, god forbid, its passengers... *tr
Driving on freeway, car had difficulty maintaining speed on incline. after i exited the freeway and came to a stop, i was unable to get the car above 20 mph. i was able to drive to aamco. cost of transmission replacement was $3500. later i learned from a kind nissan service manager that my transmission had an extended warranty and that i should have been able to have it replaced for free. i am angry because nissan never told me that the vehicle had an extended warranty on the transmission despite: 1. i had it serviced at the nissan dealer the day before the transmission failed. 2. the dealer did a 20 point inspection but omitted checking the box for a transmission inspection. 3. i spoke to the nissan parts department and gave them my vin number to find out the cost of the transmission. 4. the nissan customer service representative told me that nissan will not notify vehicle owners of the transmission unless the vehicle is brought to nissan for service - no mail, no email, no verbal even if the customer calls to complain about the transmission. *tr
Car was making light clicking sounds started driving before getting up to speed car made a popping sound and jerked not allowing me to continue driving. car will start moving fine for a few feet then will continue.... per auto repair part is called transfer case $3000+ repair according to a complaint web site this issue is common in murano's. *tr
New vehicle was bought september 2009. on 04/26/2011, east charlotte nissan's mechanics changed transfer case because leaking. vehicle had 29,505 miles. on march 24, 2014, ecn's assistant service manager said it is necessary to change transfer case and gasket because leaking. vehicle had aprox 70,000 miles. after owner requested help to nc consumer protection, ecn's general manager replied neither of those leaks would be considered abnormal since repair was nearly three years and vehicle was driven 50,000 miles. also, he states that owner because his financial situation wants to get vehicle fixed at no cost and that is dishonest and unethical. owner never tried to get a free repair. he only would like to know: why transfer case and gasket should be changed every three years because leaking? however, the first time they were changed happened after one year and seven months and with less than 30,000 miles. *js
I took my car in for an oil change and was informed that it needed a new seal on the transfer case. if i did not do this the car would lock up and not move. the repair cost would be 1500 to 3800 dollars. it seems that nissan has a history with its power trains and should not expect a customer to repair it and be told that it just happens and will again with such minimal mileage. i heard a few other customers being told that they also had major repairs that were needed when going in for routine maintenance. it does appear that dealerships have a way to extort large sums of money from people in a struggling economy! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan murano. the contact stated that the vehicle was examined at the dealer for routine maintenance when the mechanic discovered that the transfer casing was leaking fluid and needed to be resealed. the contact was informed that the defect could cause the vehicle to suddenly stall. the contact was also informed that the left front axle shaft was defective and would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was not available. *tr
Purchase a 2009 nissan murano was told it had a branded title from carfax. called 1800nissan 1 before i purchase the vehicle and asked them to run the vin number and the lady was able to tell me the whole history but said they had no record that it was a factory buyback said probably a mistake with the state who titled the car. transmission went out which is still covered by nissan and they said they will not cover it because the car was branded and admitted to me on a recorded line the person i talked to gave me false information. all she could say was sorry there is nothing nissan will do for me. i learned the car was bought back because of the airbags and with two small children i would have never purchase this vehile knowing that. nissan does not want to assist me in any way. ive worked in the car industry for 16 years and i made sure to call to find out what issues that vehicle had and bought it becuase the rep i talked to at nissan said there was no record it was ever purchased back or never told me it had airbag problem. the lady admitted her rep told me wrong info and all i can get is sorry and now im going to be out $3800 for a new transmission. its wrong and nissan need to do something better then sorry for me. if i had this information from nissan when i called would have never purchased this car. please help me any way you can thanks.
My husband took my vehicle for a normal oil change. he was then informed that the transfer case had a leak and it would cost over $3,000.00 to have it replaced. i do have an extended warranty and between nissan and the extended warranty i am being juggled around as to who is responsible to pay for the replacement. i have since found out that the factory warranty was extended due to the many problems associated with this issue. i have been looking and have found that this has been a problem on the murano for quite some time. apparently if the transfer case runs dry of the small amount of oil it has, it can lock up the entire drivetrain and render the vehicle un-drivable. the transfer case is directly related to the cvt and many of the failed cvt's vehicles have had cracked or leaving transfer cases. since there seems to be a considerable amount of incidents and nissan is aware of the issue, it seems unbelievable that they are not fixing the transfer case issue, especially since it is a potential safety concern. it seems fit that since nissan knows about the issue they should be responsible for all costs for repairs which includes labor, parts and any other related expenses. *tr
My 2009 nissan murano will hesitate for 10-20 seconds while i driving down the road or heading up hill. i took it to the escondido nissan dealership and they stated that my transmission needed to be replaced. they replaced it at a great cost to me, but i am experiencing the same hesitation. it is dangerous because my car will stop for no good reason, causing those behind me to have to slam on their brakes. nissan states that because i received an upgraded transmission and upgraded parts, i can expect this sort of hesitation from here on out. i do not feel safe driving my vehicle and nissan is not repairing my vehicle in order to make it safe. *tr
I was told today that i have leak in the transfer case in my 2009 nissan murano awd. i was told by the service advisor that the leak could cause a fire if the fluid drips onto the catalytic converter. after searching the web, i found many other nissan muranos with similar complaints. i think nissan should be forced to make the necessary repair (est. given $2725) when the 60,000 mile warranty has expired. *tr
I have been having problems with the cvt transmission and was told the factory warranty was extended to double that of its original offer due to many problems. i took my murano to the dealer to have the cvt replaced and while i was there, the dealership told me the transfer case was leaking also and would need a new seal but it was expensive. i received a call later from the dealer stating that my particular vin contained a transfer case that had no separate seal option and the entire case would need replaced for over $3,000. with very little looking i see that this has been a problem on the murano for several years and they have changed the warranty to cover the faulty cvt transmission but not the transfer case which has gone hand in hand with previous cvt's. (if it's one, it's both) apparently, if the case runs dry of oil (which it doesn't have much in the first place) it can lock up the entire drivetrain and render the vehicle un-drivable. the transfer case is directly related to the cvt and many of the failed cvt's vehicles have had cracked or leaking transfer cases as well. considering the number of incidents and awareness of nissan with this issue, it seems absurd they not remedy the transfer case issue, especially with it being a potential safety concern. but knowing that the transfer case is unserviceable and a fully enclosed, integral part of the main drive train should clearly put nissan in the hot seat for all costs for repairs labor, parts, and any other related expenses. *tr
I just got off the phone with the nissan dealership and they informed me that there was a leak between the transfer case and the transmission, it also catches really hard when you put it into reverse or drive and sometimes to a minute to finally go into gear. . they also said this was a recall but for some reason my muranos vin wasn't popping up as one of the 2009 muranos that fell under the recall. i was looking around your web-site and i saw another person was having this same issue, and it sounds like they might have been told the same thing we were. which was basically to keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or in better terms when it gets worse to take it in and spend $3,000 to have it fixed. i'm not completely sure how this recall thing works but if its happening to multiple 2009 nissan murano's it seems like the recall should be for the whole year not just certain ones. *tr
The car was taken to the nissan dealership approximately 4 months ago and i was notified of the transfer case leaking and was quoted at least $3,000 to fix it. i was told it will eventually go and will affect my transmission but to stay on top of my oil changes and fluids to help prevent the system from failing. at my next oil change i asked if the system was checked and i was told "everything looks good." about a week ago (was not due yet for a oil change) my car would jolt into reverse and would be hesitant to go and same thing with driving forward. the car is stuck in awd, transmission clicks when driving, and jolting occurs driving forward and reversing. apparently this is a common problem with the transfer case failing in this type of car. *tr
I was driving home and heard a noise with my murano. i noticed i had a loss in power (moving forward). it felt like it i had put it in neutral - no power at all. i was in the middle of a 7 lane highway in rush hour. i managed to get it into the turning lane. i powered off the vehicle. i waited a little while and powered it back on and was able to go a little farther and then once again had no power. i continued this process until i was able to get off the main road. i have heard from a mechanic that it is my transmission. i am so disappointed to see so many people having the exact same problem. if there is action we can take, please let me know. *tr
When vehicle is accelerated from a stop, loud thump is felt and heard from floorboard. nissan dealer refused to cover replacement of cracked front end motor mounts. other murano owners report the same problem. this is an obvious safety issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan murano. while driving approximately 55 mph, the contact heard a whistling sound and felt a vibration in the vehicle. the vehicle began to decelerate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics. the technician stated the transmission and the transfer case would have to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
Nissan performed warranty to cvt axle seal and transfer assy. case seals at mileage 50,332. then at 55,5570 on aug 02, 2011 nissan had to replace the transfer case assy. (part number 3310-jp11b) under warranty , then on dec 12, 2012, mileage 80,841, the transfer case assy. (part number 3310-jp11c) failed again which nissan replaced but no longer consider it under warranty and at a cost to me of $3700.66. then at mileage 80,935 the transfer case assy. seals began leaking which the dealer fixed under warranty from the previous repair work. we called the nissan office as we thought the transfer case assy. was cover under the cvt system extended warranty. nissan is now claiming this is not part of the cvt system which they extended the warranty on up to 10 years or 120,000 miles even though it is an integral part of the system. *tr
Cracked metal transfer case under normal work-commute driving conditions at 60,200 miles. case and seals had to be replaced. cannot drive vehicle. nissan has had this problem before - note nissan service bulletin ntb04129. *tr
After shifting gear in the 2009 nissan murano from drive to reverse or reverse to drive, the car continues to roll in previous gear even with the gas pedal pressed. this is severe on hills and has resulted in not being able to drive the car in the desired direction. this is an extremely dangerous defect. also-the car enables the key to be removed and car shut off while transmission is in drive or reverse and the car continues to move in either direction even with the car powered off! it does not lock or prevent you from shutting car off - extremely dangerous!!! *tr
