Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2003 Nissan Murano

The car is stalling when i stop whining real bad

This car has had a lot of electrical issues. the cam shaft position sensors have had to be replaced three times and the ecu had to be replaced. the sunroof is also dead. the bose stereo is always going out. i'm upset because there was many vins that nissan covered because they recognized that there was a issue, but mine was not included in the recall. this is a safety hazard! your car can die at any time, any speed and any where. my car is now in the shop for the 3rd time with cam sensor issues after being stranded twice. the car just won't start. the battery, alternator and starter all check out good.

A wire broke inside the alternator causing the battery to stop from charging. my family was driving approximately 60mph on the highway when the charger warning and brake warning lamps came on. the battery began to discharge and the car lost power. we pulled over to the side of the road and the engine went into a "fall safe" mode (all dash indicators and radio display flashed rapidly) and then the engine stopped running. the engine would not restart and the car had to be towed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. while driving approximately 60 mph, the battery and anti-lock braking system warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle lost acceleration. the contact parked the vehicle in a lot. the vehicle would not restart and had to be towed to tischer nissan in fort meade. the dealer diagnosed that the alternator failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 172,000.

Car randomly shuts off while in motion at various times while on highway and city streets. most recent occurrence we were attempting to make a left turn and car shut off and rolled into ditch while oncoming traffic was approaching.

I was driving on a large bypass 55 mph. suddenly, my speed and rpm's dropped even with pushing my gas pedal to the floor. i pulled over, put my car in park, and touched the gas pedal. the rpm's increased normally so i began driving again. within a short distance it happened again. i got off the bypass and pulled into a parking lot. i turned the car off and checked my fluids. i restarted the car and pulled back out onto the road (40 mph highway). as soon as i pulled out it did it again. i pulled onto a backroad. i noticed then that my abs light and battery light had come on. i turned on my 4 ways since my car would not go over 10 mph. when i turned them on i heard what sounded like an electric short and all of my lights and gauges began flickering wildly. with a very short distance i began losing power to everything until my car completely stopped. i was on the side of a dark road at 11 pm with no lights or power. when the tow truck arrived he said that sounds like the alternator. i looked up the cost of an alternator for my vehicle and found out there was a recall on my vehicle year, make and model: july 14, 2005 nhtsa campaign number: 05v319000 wire breaking inside alternator. this recalled described exactly what i had experienced. in the morning, i called the dealership regarding this and after a call back i was told that there was "no open recall" on my vehicle. then i called customer affairs at nissan corporate for clarification. i was told that my car's recall was repaired at a dealership (although they had no record of which dealership did the repair) on an unknown date "between 2005 and the present" so nissan has closed this recall and is no longer responsible for the repair. i was informed that even if i took my car in and it was verified that this was the same problem, that they would not pay for it. i have a case number from my call to nissan.

Driving 2003 nissan murano on highway and when i began slow down my car turned off. was able to turn the car back on and then it immediately turned off. was told it was the alternator, but that it was not included in the recall (nhtsa campaign #05v319000), so nissan would not replace it.

Driving on a highway with children 65mph coming from airport, starting losing speed quickly, brake light and charging(battery) light came luckily made it side of highway despite, honking horns and screaming kids, someone could have been killed. this is on top of the acceleration problem where all of a sudden you will press on gas pedal and the car doesn't go and then suddenly lunges forward, i have almost been rear- ended on several occasions due to this. i have purchased new battery, alternator, etc. i have had the throttle sensor replaced. this car is so unsafe and has been a money pit. many mechanics including nissan mechanics say they test drive the vehicle and don't see the acceleration problem.

My car was running sluggish and low power when turned on lights, when tested battery it was fine but voltage low so i guess its not charging battery. doesn't start alot of times. engine runs hot quick, put new battery did same and one day the battery and brake light stayed on and then while driving it just stopped like i was giving it gas but car wasn't moving. now it wont start at all. there may be a tiny oil leak but don't know from where and it drives rough but they say my shocks and struts and suspension and everything is ok. *tr

Driving car lost power and came to a stop ,had to have it tow because it wouldn't stay running. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. the contact stated that while the driver was driving at 15 mph and approaching the driveway, the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure recurred four times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 03v455000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 55,000.

On june 18th 2015 my car felt as if was losing power and then my brake light and battery came on. i came to a slow moving pace, like 10 mph. very dangerous i was on the highway. lost all power. would not crank. replaced battery and worked for about 2 weeks and then again same thing. could have really caused a bad accident.... did some research and had alternator tested. bad alternator. replaced it. and again today same thing. this is so dangerous and getting to be very expensive. i see there was a recall about this issue but not my car. very upset. something needs to be done to correct this issue before someone causes an accident that could very well take someone's life. i have replaced the censor, battery and now two alternator's within 2 months.

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle felt as if it were going to stall and the slip, service engine, and dcv off warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the camshaft sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,008.

Driving car and it cuts out while in motion. recalls: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/searchresultsbyurlcode.action?referencesearch.requestid=45839&referencesearch.urlcode=vvanyoql53pimw1 recall subject : intake air ducts/resonator report receipt date: may 19, 2009 nhtsa campaign number: 09v169000 component(s): engine and engine cooling recall subject : wire breaking inside alternator , 1 investigation(s) report receipt date: nov 17, 2003 nhtsa campaign number: 03v455000 component(s): engine and engine cooling. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. while reversing, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle on the first attempt after assistance from an eyewitness with jumper cables; however, the vehicle failed again. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the alternator failed due to a burned wire. the vehicle was repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v319000 (electrical system). in addition, the contact stated that the fuel sensor indicator illuminated. the vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic who stated that the fuel pump failed and needed to be replaced due to the location of the fuel tank. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 06v003000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly). the manufacturer was made aware of the failures and informed the contact that the vin was not included in the recall. the failure mileage was approximately 66,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. the contact indicated that the charger warning and brake warning lamps illuminated. the contact mentioned that the battery would be completely drained intermittently. in addition, the contact stated that the engine went into a fail safe mode and prevented the vehicle from accelerating. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop. the technician advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection and repair. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v319000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 159,000.

I was driving my nissan murano going 45mph when suddenly the engine light flashed, the air went out, and the car shut off. i was pressing the gas but it wouldn't do anything and it suddenly shut off. i've been to several shops that can't find a problem so they told me about the recall on the 2003 nissan murano. they think it's maybe electrical or engine cooling. *tr

I was driving my vehicle and the engine stalled. once it happened when i was driving at about 25mph and the vehicle just shut off and twice when i was at a red light while the vehicle was idling. also i was driving in the hwy last week and the engine lst power for about 3 second, putting at a great risk for a crash. the other problem i am having is the passenger door actuator that stopped working so when i lock my car that won't lock putting my vehicle at a risk for being stolen. i called nissan corp because i knew that was a recall id # 78963 - engine and engine nissan is recalling 362,891 my 2003-2007 murano vehicles. the intake air ducts, which are connected to the intermediate resonator in the air intake system of the engine, may separate from the resonator with engine movement. this separation occurs due to the premature aging of the material used in the intake air ducts which causes excessive shrinking, and because of that engine may stall increasing the risk of a crash. however the representative said that there is nothing to worry about and my vehicle was not included in the recall even though it is the same model and year of the vehicle recalled. *tr

The car stops in traffic with no warning. it stalls in traffic there is a recall for this but my vin is not included this is so dangerous and nissan doesn't care. they have a recall for my year and model for the same thing my car is doing but because my vin # is not on there they won't fix it so i guess someone has to die before something is done. so many people have the same situation as i do. it is disgusting that you pay all this money for a reliable car and they n know there is an extremely dangerous situation and they don't care. the electrical system is bad engine light going on all the time alarm going off all the time. engine burnes oil very quickly. all these things are wrong with this year car it is just a lemon that u have to keep pouring money into ands it dangerous on top of it.

First incident: while turning into a parking lot car shut off all warning lights on dash lit up. since no power to car i was not able to turn or use my brakes effectively. i was stopped in the oncoming traffic lane. i was able to use my four way lights. car had to be towed as we were unable to restart the car. second incident: while driving on a city street at 35 miles an hour once again car turned off and i was unable to use gas or brakes related to no power. i barely was able to get about halfway into the turn lane to get out of traffic. almost causing an accident. this te i was able to wait a few minutes and after a few unsuccessful attempts to start my car it finally began running again. *tr

Vechicle abrubtly loss power in drive train while accelerating through busy cross section. vechicle progressed no more than 10 miles while pulling off the road. once the engine was turned off, vechicle would ignition did not have power, albeit all other power (windows, lights, etc..) was ok. dealer says abs control unit and transmission failure. *tt

It was hot outside. i was on a major highway and all of a sudden i was unable to accelerate then the car lost power. i had to have my vehicle towed to a mechanic to find out my fuel pump fuse blew. since then within a month time my car has lost power twice and abruptly stopped running on a major highway going about 55 mph. putting myself and kids in a very dangerous situation. after sitting for about 20 minutes the first time and a hour the second time i pumped the gas pedal, turned the key and it started right up. i purchased my 2003 murano only 4 months ago and never thought i would be here today scared to drive. nissan needs to take these complaints much more seriously before someone lose their life behind this defect. *tr

Please help! i have been having issues with this car ever since i bought it at this small dealer in arlington va. saturday march 3, 2012, my nissan murano stalled. i am afraid the car will stall when i am driving on the highway and this could be a safety issues for me and other innocent people. this is not the first time it stalled. today my driver side window is stuck and won't move up or down. must be some electrical problem. i have contacted nissan on issues with this car before and they refused to help me. can someone point me in the right direction as to who i need to talk to and who can help me to get this resolved? i truly believe this car needs to be recalled and is not included in the past recalls that have been recorded. The door lock on the driver side went out and shortly after the rest of the door locks in the vehicle began to fail. because of this issue, i am currently at risk of theft if the door lock do not completely lock. i received an estimate of $1600 to fix the issue and i have heard that's by others are having the same problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 nissan murano. the contact was driving 55 mph when the brake and battery warning lights illuminated. the vehicle then began to decelerate to 30 mph and demonstrated a significant reduction in engine power. the contact was unable to accelerate beyond 30 mph. the contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic and was told there was a recall for the alternator under nhtsa campaign id number: 05v319000 (electrical system: alternator: generator: regulator). the manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in the recall campaign. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 109,000.

Nhtsa recall campaign 03v455000: camshaft position sensor failed; called nissan and was told my vin is not included in the list of recalled vehicles, even though symptoms are the same. *tr

Driving 60 mph when vehicle suddenly stopped running. brake and engine lights came on. was unable to get off roadway and other vehicle had to turn sharply to avoid hitting me. this was the first incident. have had two incidents since. *kb

Second owner, purchased with 63000 miles. first occurrence was driving on the highway a short distance (45min) started to notice the speed pulsing on flat stretches of road with the cruise control being set at 60 mph. i would manually take over the gas pedal just to have to constantly give it more gas then less gas to maintain 60 on flat ground. to the point of nailing it to maintain 60 then out of no where it would start to go accelerate suddenly up and i would let off the gas to stay @ 60mph and hold the pedal there for about 20 secs just to lose power on flat ground again and would just repeat over and over. when i got off the exit ramp it was sputtering really bad and had a hard time just getting it home w/o hurting myself or others. next day nothing. then over time (1 month) it happened 4 other times but is seeming to get worse. then today i stopped in town at a red light. when it came time to go the care jus sat there and the rpm gauge moved up but the car didn't move forward. i immediately put on hazards, put car in park, shut it off, then restarted it to luckily be able to pull off. went on highway home going 60mph and the surging back and forth with power to weakness to sudden power was the worst its ever been. car isn't under warranty due to being 2nd owner but come on nissan really? i'm a student/new father and the $ is crunched like most families now in this economy. i bought a nissan b/c its reputation of quality and endurance/resilience. i would be sick if this injured my baby b/c this car wasn't in the "original recall range". it is very dangerous and could lead to both my tires locking up on the highway going 60 or even faster leaving not only us in jeopardy but everyone around me on the road also. *tr

Since i purchased my 2003 nissan murano, i have had several failures with it that the dealer has either claimed they cannot reproduce, has failed to fix or indicates that my model is not part of a recall effort, even when my car is reproducing the very same symptoms the recalls state they address. the last incident was the alternator and the failure of the cam position sensors and crank position sensors. both have caused the vehicle to simply stop in ongoing traffic creating an obvious safety hazard for my family! does someone have to actually die before will accept responsibility for faulty construction with the murano? this is not the first life-threatening incident i have had with this car!!! i was on the interstate doing 70 mph when all of a sudden the engine died!!! i completely lost acceleration on interstate 70 at 10:30 p.m. at night with small children in the car! what did the dealership do to rectify this situation? replaced the alternator that was already on recall and threatened to charge me for the cost until i threatened legal action...then, all of a sudden, took care of it! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. the contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, she attempted to accelerate further, but the vehicle lost power and stalled. the anti-lock brake and battery lights also began to illuminate on the instrument panel. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics. the battery was replaced, but the failure continued and reccurred intermittently at different speeds on three occasions. after the final failure, the vehicle was towed home. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 124,000. the vin was not available.

Front door locks working intermittently when using the remote.. *tr

Alternator failure 2003 nissan murano almost cause a accident. *tr

While driving on the toll road in houston, my vehicle lost speed and power going up an overpass, and luckily i was able to pull off to the shoulder before complete loss of power. the check engine light came on prior to this event. i was able to crank the engine but it would not start. my passenger needed medical assistance due to the heat (100 degrees), and my vehicle had to be towed to the nissan dealer. this dealer indicated a dtcode p0340, cam sensor and crank sensor failure, and repairs totaled $765.93. researching this failure, i learned that there was an earlier recall of my exact vehicle for this failure, but my vin was not included in the recall. after searching the internet, i discovered many, many other owners of 2003 muranos with vin numbers outside of the recall are experiencing the exact same problem as the recall. here's a link to just one of several sites: http://www.thehappyrock.com/2007/11/15/have-your-car-fixed-for-free-auto-recalls-and-my-2003-nissan-murano/ calls to nissan usa, requesting they consider a recall of my vehicle, were denied. i am requesting via this complaint that the recall of 2003 muranos be expanded to include all vehicles with the failure code(s) relating to the cam sensor/crank sensor. the problem is a faulty weld, and although nissan denies a relationship between their earlier production failures and my auto's failure, there is a definite problem with their weld. i feel fortunate that i did not have my children in the car, and that i was able to steer to the side of the road on the tollroad before stalling. with the average tollroad speed well over 70 mph, my safety and the safety of my passenger was in question due to the location of the breakdown. i hope this never happens to anyone with young children or elderly passengers in the vehicle.

The power locks randomly don't work using the fob or inside auto lock button. they can be used manually, but are not always functional using the "power" function. *kb

Murnao has been maintained wth all oil changes/schd mx done by the book. couple of days ago i was sitting in line at a drive thru and the car abruptly died. there were no warning lights prior to the event. the service engine soon light came on then went back off after a restart. then yesterday it died while slowing to a stop sign at aprox 15 mph. this time the service light stayed on after the restart. again this morning it died, this time in traffic while traveling at aprox 50 mph. parked the murano and borrowed a friends car for the rest of the day. did my homework online and noticed the recall for this engine stall. got the engine codes from a local shop and suprise; camshaft position/crank position sensors. of course when i called nissan my vin is not affected by the recall 03v455000. contacted local nissan dealer, est repair costs $600+. nissan is not holding up its end of thier deal on this vehicle. please take note, do not buy nissan.

We purchased a new 2003 nissan murano when they first came out. over time we noticed that the car would stall almost all the time after we first started it in the morning. we did not think much about this and just dealt with it after taking it to our nissan dealer who could not tell us what was wrong. this was a few years ago. three days ago my wife was driving home from work and the car just died while she was driving and the service engine light came on. immediatley the next morning we took the car to our local car repair shop in purcellville, va to have the car looked at. i did not fee comfortable taking the car to our nearest nissan dealer 30 miles away given what just happened. the repair shop called and said our car had a voluntary recall for camshaft position sensors and they was causing the problem. they printed out the recall and told me to call nissan to have them fix the problem instead of having to pay my local repair shop. i called our nissan dealership and reporting my problem and they told me the vin of my car was not part of the voluntary recall. i said if i have the problem and it has been verified why would you not fix it-- its not safe! long story short - i took the car to a nissan dealership and they also confirmed that my car has the problem but that nissan will not fix. i find this horrible and need your help. *tr

2003 nissan murano camshaft sensor failed, causing vehicle to stall in traffic on freeway. occurs regularly when vehicle has been in traffic. sometimes vehicle stalls and catches itself; other times, it stalls and has power failure. vehicle taken to nissan murano dealer (santa monica) and told that 2003 recall for exact problem does not apply to awd models. asking $600 for repairs. *tr

I own a 2003 nissan murano. i bought the vehicle several months ago.. last night we were driving on a very curvy mountain road when a car came into sight. when we switched to dim, the lights went out completely. this put us in total darkness. it took a minute to adjust our eyes and realize what happened. this has happened on several occasions. the dimmer switch is on the steering wheel. the switch to turn them off is on the end of the dimmer handle. we keep our runner lights on each time we are driving the car. some how when you go to switch the lights the knob turns to off, which makes them go out, when you switch from bright to dim and from dim to bright. this is a very scary situation to be in. i wonder if other folks have had a similar problem. we were very fortunate that we did not crash. *tr

Total and sudden loss of power while at 65-70 mph on a crowded freeway. thanks to a trucker in a lane to my right running interference, i was able to coast to the shoulder, where we sat in 102 degree heat until we could get help. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was towed to the contact's home. the contact replaced the battery, but the failure continued. the vehicle was then taken to the dealer. the dealer stated that they needed to replace the alternator. the vehicle was repaired and the failure continued. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 09v169000 (engine and engine cooling). the failure mileage was 55,000 and the current mileage was 97,000.

I have a 2003 nissan murano. about 1 week ago the check engine light came on. the car doesn't start right away and also stalls during operation. i took the car to the nissan dealer and was told the camshaft position sensor has to be replaced. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. while driving at speeds of 45 mph, the abs and brake warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the brakes then engaged without driver warrant. the contact had not depressed the brake pedal and instead, attempted to depress the accelerator but to no avail. the dealer advised the alternator had failed and would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 116,000 and the current mileage was 116,891.

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. while the contact was driving at a speed of 35 mph she noticed that the battery and brake warning lights appeared on the dashboard. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who replaced the battery. the contact was informed that the alternator had malfunctioned. the contact called the dealership regarding nhtsa recall #05v319000: electrical system: alternator/ generator/ regulator and was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall. the current and failure mileages were 75,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. the contact stated that the transmission and the alternator became inoperable simultaneously. the dealer repaired the transmission under nhtsa campaign id number: 03v123000 (power train:automatic transmission:gear position indication -prndl) but denied any assistance with repairs to the vehicle under nhtsa campaign id number: 05v319000 (electrical system: alternator/generator/regulator). the vehicle was repaired for both failures. the failure mileage was 89,150 and the current mileage was 104,000.

The passenger side door lock is not locking or unlocking completely when using the remote or key. it appears to be locked, but the door can be opened from outside the car and visa versa. starting in may 2011, the driver's side door lock is doing the same thing. i'm also unable to enter the vehicle through neither of the front doors and have to enter through the back doors to unlock the front doors manually from the inside. this is a safety issue as i or a passenger can get locked out of the car or think the door is locked while in the car and someone from the outside could gain access. in case of emergency, i may or may not be able to get into or out of the car. starting in november 2010 while raising the window on the passenger side with the power window button, it automatically lowers on it's own on occasion. it stops when half open. to keep it closed, i have to inch it up slowly. again this is a safety issue. the lock to the gas cap failed to open around 40,000 miles.

Just over two years ago the automatic driver's side door lock became unreliable. there are times when the door must be manually locked or unlocked. the situation seems to be exacerbated by heat and direct sunlight on the driver's side door. my concern is that not knowing if the door is locked or unlocked creates a safety hazard both while driving and in the event of a need for quick exit from the vehicle. simply looking at the manual locking switch can be deceptive because it will move into the locked position without fully engaging the lock. for safety reasons i prefer to drive with the doors locked. having a secure environment is paramount in certain neighborhoods. if anyone can simply open the door to gain access, there is a significant increased risk of carjacking, injury, theft, etc. having the doors lock correctly is a basic safety precaution. additionally, in emergencies it's important to be able to unlock doors quickly. in this automated age we tend to rely on the automated systems of our vehicles and it's unfamiliar to resort to the manual locking system, which as i explained above can be deceptive. i can easily understand how some people would be confused how unlock a door using the manual level in an emergency. in emergencies every second counts. the locking/unlocking solenoid malfunctioning is clearly a high risk in emergency scenarios. the dealer charges an average of $1600 to have all the solenoids replaced which amounts to making the owner pay for a known safety issue. at this price many will forgo getting the problem fixed, putting their family members at risk with the above mishap examples. nissan should recall the affected vehicles and repair this safety issue. *kb

Alternator seized up, engine lost power, and vehicle stopped in middle of road. alternator was the nissan replaced for a recall in 2005. my mechanic said that the bad alternator was a re-conditioned alternator that nissan had installed as part of the recall. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. while driving approximately 40 to 50 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. the check engine indicator illuminated after the failure occurred. the vehicle shut off a total of four times, but was able to be restarted. the contact took the vehicle to the repair shop for a diagnosis and the camshaft position sensor was initially determined to be the cause of the failure. the mechanic then stated that if the camshaft position sensor was replaced, it would not correct the failure. the contact was informed that the real issue was with the computer and electrical system in the vehicle. he was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnosis. the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 03v455000 (engine and engine cooling). the contact will take the vehicle to the dealer to be diagnosed. the current and failure mileages were 41,000. updated 3/27/09 *cn updated 04/01/09.(jb

While driving on busy road, brake light and check engine lights came on. at the same time, the car lost power (though it did not stall). when giving it throttle, the engine refused to speed up. it was like being in a "fail safe" mode, like when speed sensors go out. could not safely pull over or drive...managed to get to side of road and call for a tow. nissan dealer said it was the alternator. they had already replaced the alternator under a recall. *tr

The door actuator, for the right rear door, does not function properly. when i push the electric "doors unlock- lock button" on the driver door panel, the door does not lock or unlock, as it should. *tr
