All 4 tires of my nissan 2004 (first owner) develop cracks on sidewalls, not sure when cracks developed however, based on 1/8" wide crack (gap) on right rear inside tire, crack must have started between 25,000 & 30,000 miles , all along perimeter where sidewall meets tread. tire size (original equipment manufacturer) p245-45-r18, goodyear eagle rs-a. dealer (central valley nissan, modesto ca). condition of tires are obviously a sign of structural defect. tires can explode at any time and should not be driven until new tires have been placed. dealerships should be notified to watch for conditions on models that were sold with this particular tire. i found the condition myself and unfortunately have never been warned by the dealer who sold me the vehicle. i believe many others with the same type of tire are at risk today and not aware of the impending consequence. *jb

I have had numerous problems with my 2004 nissan maxima. i have had to replace tires, have had the vehicle in the shop for the check engine light coming numerous times; have paid to have the battery replaced because the car suddenly stalled; have had the catalytic converter replaced because of one of the check engine light trips to the dealer. most recently, i replaced the front and back brakes due to what i thought was normal wear and tear. a month later, the abs brake system fails, and i am told that is not under warranty, and the charge will be $1,645. the car is only two years old. i am at the dealer at least once, sometimes twice a month. i used to be the biggest cheerleader for nissan. i had a 1991 nissan maxima that i bought used with 173,000 miles on it. that car was on the road until it had more than 300,000. now i feel like i purchased a lemon. i bought a new car because i didn't want the headaches that come along with a used car. i took my car to the dealer on september 18th because something weird going on with the brakes. i had had the brakes changed about a month before that, i knew that they were in good condition. i received a call later that day telling me that my abs brake system was bad and needed to be replaced. and that i would need to cover the cost because the part was no longer under warranty. i contact nissan north america to lodge a complaint on september 19th to see if they would cover the cost for the abs system failing, because i don't think that i should have to cover a major repair like that on a 2 year old car. i was told that a regional specialist would call me back within 24 hours. 2 days passed without a return call. i called again on the 22, and again on the 25th with no response. l believe that nissan is aware of all of the manufacturing defects with the maxima and by not responding hope that consumers will go ahead and pay for the repairs over and over again because they are afraid to drive an ...
2006 nissan maxima se oem goodyear eagles 245/45/18 defective sidewalls. more specifically, subject tires developed major cracks of 6 inches or more on the inner and outer sidewalls. an internet query yielded numerous identical complaints concerning maximas and goodyear tires. three of four tires had major cracking on inside sidewall, damage only detectable when vehicle was placed on lift. one of four tires had obvious signs of major cracking on outside sidewall; which prompted further investigation and discovery of inner sidewall cracking. all tires could catastrophically fail during normal use. *jb

All 4 tires of my nissan 2004 (first owner) develop cracks on sidewalls (25000 miles), all along perimeter where sidewall meets tread. tire size (original equipment manufacturer) p245-45-r18, goodyear. dealer (sheehy nissan, springfield, va) released document : "found all 4 tires have splits in sidewalls. no apparent damage -- looks like under warranty." tires have been rotated by dealer at recommended intervals, wheels balanced. nissan manual:at rotation dealer inspects for abnormalities; no mention of problems at about 2600 miles. dealer advise contact goodyear hq, tires not guaranteed nissan. was advised by goodyear hq to have car inspected @ craven tires, fairfax station, va. craven tires released written statement: "we found cracks in all 4 tires inconsistent with dry rot due to mileage and age of tires. customer was offered 25% courtesy discount on new tires. customer has declined at this time. offer stands for 30 days. note tread depth on all 4 tires is 4/32 of an inch." note that 4/32 is measured from embedded "consumption" bar, note also that new tires are 10/32 inch, hence tires would still have 40% life (4/10). my opinion is a structural defect and therefore a danger for all these tires, not only on my car. dealer (mr. ron del rio, sheehy nissan, springfield, va) confirmed by mouth that the problem had occurred on many other maximas en altimas, but that all clients had decided to pay themselves for replacement. these tires will see separation of sidewalls/tread, rapid deflation and may cause accident. do not use the car until this is solved to my full satisfaction; will not hesitate to bring the matter in front of the court. i am awaiting answer on my notes that i sent to goodyear corporate address and nissan customer services. nissan has notified me that it will answer me within 2-3 days, as the matter had to brought to the attention of "higher level" people within their organization. *jb

Goodyear eagle rsa tires p245/45r18, on nissan maxima 2004, with 20,000 miles. all four tires are defective. tread is separating from sidewall. goodyear has no recall and nissan has no recall on this issue. the dealer i took the car to said that mine was about the 3rd nissan he seen with this issue. i just took my 2004 nissan maximum into the dealer for a front seat and undercarriage recall issue and ask them to look at my front tire because the sidewall of the tire had a large split in it. the dealer told me that all four tires were bad on my car and the inside of the tires were much worse than the split in the sidewall that i pointed out to them. my car only has 20,000 miles on it and the dealer would not replace the tires because goodyear will not acknowledge this problem and send the dealers replacement tires. *jb
While driving on the nj turn pike at 70 mph, my husband felt what seemed like a tire going flat. he proceeded to try to get to the shoulder. suddenly, the left rear tire blew and he totally lost control of the vehicle. he was hit head-on and in the rear. both he and the driver of the other vehicle were injured and transported to the hospital. two days later we went to see the car at the towing garage and we saw the rear passenger tire was split on the sidewall. these tires were replaced recently and were rotated and checked by goodyear three months ago. goodyear saw nothing wrong with the tires at that time. is goodyear waiting for a death to occur before they issues a recall? there are many complaints about the rsa18" tires. *jb
This complaint documents a very disturbing situation regarding goodyear eagle rs-a p245/45r18 tires on our 2004 nissan maxima. we are the original owners and there were 29,500 miles on the car at the time. we had a violent flat tire (passenger rear) and upon removal noticed that the inside side wall had split in multiple regions around the circumference of the tire. when the car was up on the lift as the tire was being replaced at a goodyear dealer, it was noticed that the remaining three tires also had multiple long, deep inside side wall cracks, evident around the entire circumference. it was obvious that the car was extremely unsafe to drive in this condition, and we had all 4 tires replaced. we have no idea how long the tires had been in this condition, though it looked like the rubber had degraded significantly. since the cracks were on the inside, they were impossible to see with normal visual inspection. we consider ourselves extremely lucky that we were not seriously injured or killed as a result. it is also evident that this is a defective condition of the tires, for this to happen to all four tires at only 29,500 miles. once home, we checked the internet to see if there was any recall issued. we were horrified to find numerous complaints from owners of 2004 nissan maximas that have experienced the same problem. we find it hard to believe that prestigious companies such as goodyear or nissan would be so irresponsible as to allow people to unknowingly drive around on hazardous tires. we are extremely concerned that other nissan maxima owners may experience the same problem but may be hurt or killed as a result. it is irresponsible of both goodyear and nissan to not respond to this situation. we believe they should issue a recall or safety alert and fully reimburse the owners for the tire cost. we then sent letters to both goodyear and nissan to address their intent. *jb

I purchased a 2004 nissan maxima approximately 18 months ago. the car now has 17000 miles on it. i took it to the nissan dealership where i purchased the car, pohanka nissan in fredericksburg, va, the car failed inspection because the tires have failed. the tires are goodyear eagle rs-a m+s p245/45 r18. the tires have sidewall cracks on the inside of the tires and cords are showing. the dealership said that this is a recurring problem on nissan's equipped with these tires. i believe that this is a safety issue. i am also disappointed that this apparently widespread problem has not resulted in a recall. these are expensive tires and should not have failed after 18 mos. and 17,000 miles. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated while adding air to the tires, it was noticed the sidewalls of the two front tires were cracked. there were no warning indicators of a problem other than the cracked sidewalls. the tire manufacturer was contacted and agreed to replace the two front tires. the two rear tires do not appear to have a problem. the tires were regularly rotated and the proper pressure was maintained. the tire dealer informed the contact this was the forth vehicle seen with this same problem recently. the tire brand name is eagle rsa and the size is p245/45/r18. *tr

1) flat tire on nissan maxima 2004 car with 2003 manufactured good year eagle rs-a p245 45r18 96v tires.... 2) ties are defective an independent goodyear employee told me so, and told me they are unsafe to drive on and still would not replace them because they have not been recalled as of yet but offered a $100 off each tire, they are $300 tires.. the tires have 24k miles on them, the front tires are worse then the rear but all are the same. the tread still has at least half the tread if not more left... there is severe cracking and it is possible they could blow out on others and cause serious injury, i have pictures i can send if you send me a direct email address.. 3) i took the car to goodyear they said the tire is defected and unsafe to drive, but sent me on my way because i do not believe i should have to pay a dime for unsafe defective tires........ someone will be killed driving on those tires.... they are a road hazard... *jb

At a recent oil service the tires on my car were found to have deep cracks in the sidewalls. the tread on the tires appears to be good for 10k more miles. however i had to have them changed as they amy fail due to rupture of the sidewalls. *jb
My 2004 nissan maxima has been experiencing loud rattling noise when driving and severe shaking of the steering when applying the brakes. in april 2006 i took the car to the dealership. they stated the struts and suspension needed to be placed and insisted i pay for it. the struts had been replaced in the car previously in april of 2005 along with defective rotors. they also suggested the belts be replaced because they were cracking. i have not had the car two years yet, but parts on this vehicle continue to malfunction exhibiting all signs of defective manufacturing. additionally i replaced two of the originally tires (goodyear rsa 18") at 12k and 20k miles for tears in the sidewalls. i have reviewed the other complaints on file for this vehicle from other owners and unfortunately i share the same problems with my maxima. *nm
I notice a few days ago that 3 out of 4 tires on my nissan maxima 2004 have developed cracks on the side walls. after doing some research on the internet i came across numerous complaints about the same thing. i strongly believe that these tires are defective and further investigation by the nhtsa is required. lets not wait for someone to get killed before action is taken. the tires are manufactured by goodyear. the model of the tires are eagle rs-a p245/45 r18. *nm

Ever since the first day i purchased my 2004 nissan maxima, i noticed something rather odd. at 50 mph, even less at most times, there is a terrible shimmy which can cause a serious accident. when i step on the brakes at or above 50 mph, the wheel shakes ferociously out of control, and this can cause a serious serious accident, especially in rain or snow, and even on dry land. i am not the only one. everyone with a 2004-2006 nissan maxima has this problem. this is a lemon. *jb
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima xe. the vehicle has goodyear eagle rs-a tires, size p245/45/r18. the contact observed that the inner and outer sidewalls of the tires exhibited excessive cracking on the two front and rear driver's side tires. the vehicle rode poorly on normal road conditions. through research, the contact stated that there was a special tire replacement program for these tires. the vehicle was taken to the tire manufacturer for inspection; however, the tires were excluded from the program because it exceeded the expiration date. the contact was displeased to know that there was no prior notification of the "special tire replacement program" to take advantage of the remedy. the tires have not been replaced. the contact filed a safety complaint on the other three tires on the vehicle (odi number 10259643). the dot number and vin were unavailable. the failure mileage was 15,913 and current mileage was 34,800.
All four goodyear eagle rs-a p245/45r tires on my 2004 nissan maxima developed deep sidewall cracks. nissan would not cover the defective tires. goodyear provided some relief by discounting the replacement cost to $264.15. upon searching the internet to see if other owners had experienced the same problem with the 2004 nissan maxima and goodyear tires, i discovered there were 113 registered owners who had the identical problem, extensive sidewall cracks. neither nissan nor goodyear would acknowledge a problem. some of the owners experienced crashes and injuries. the web site is http://www.mycarstats.com/safetystation.asp#safetystation. underinflation was not the problem. i check my tires regularly. jack burns.. *nm
I own a 2004 maxima and have goodyear rsa245/45/18 tires. i have had a blow out while driving on long island expressway. checked my tires this weekend found side wall cracks on both front tires and severe sidewall failure on inside of rear tires. i have replaced two tires during the first year due side wall cuts was told it was road hazard. how could a car with just 40k have had 3 out of four tires replaced and now i need to replace all four again. these tires need to be recalled before there is a death. *nm
My goodyear eagle rs-a tires have split along the sidewall. the local retailer told me these tires are known to do that and that goodyear has a strict policy of not allowing any replacement or pro-rated credit toward the purchase of replacement tires. this is an extremely dangerous defect which could cause fatalities in the event of tire failure. these tires need to be recalled immediately! i bought this vehicle new in july, 2003 and these tires were on the vehicle as original equipment. these tires have been garage kept and rotated every 7,500 miles with proper inflation. there's plenty of tread left on these tires and they should have lasted alot longer. the tires are splitting along the sidewall. three of the 4 tires have done this, requiring replacement of all 4 of them. make / model: nissan maxima 2004; vin [xxx]; tire model: goodyear eagle rs-a; maximum permissible tire pressure: 44; tire size: p245 / 45r18; mileage at time of incident: 46,903; incident date: 12/09/05; maximum load rating: 1,565; state of registration: oklahoma; numbers on side of tire (possible "tin" ?): [xxx]. *nm updated 07/17/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

2004 nissan maxima se 3.5 liter v6 with a manufacturer's standard tire size of p245/45r18. currently goodyear is having a manufacturer's defect on the tires listed above. the side walls on these tires are splitting and they are doing a recall on them...i guess they are going to reactive rather than proactive...just like firestone. i just wanted to let you know before someone was seriously injured or killed. the reason i am writing is because i have those same tires installed and they are splitting around the side wall and the only reason i know about this is the dealer stated that goodyear knows about the problem but is reluctant to initiate a recall...worried about dollars rather than saving lives. i am not talking about a small split but rather a split that covers almost 3/4 of the radius. thanks for your time and assistance. i really thought you and the general public needed to know before something really bad happened. *nm

No incidents led up to failure. went to nissan dealer and complained of road noise from front of car. dealer said 2 tires were cracked and posed a danger of coming apart. said they would be liable if allowed me to leave without new tires. investigated on the internet: there are multiple reports of goodyear eagle tires on 2004 nissan maxima's (oem) that have developed dangerous cracks. these should be recalled. cracks are appearing on "side facing inward" part of tires not easily visable by consumers. mileage on tires was 30348. was told to take tires to goodyear dealer but have not gotten there yet.
Dt: 2004 nissan maxima. the consumer stated the driver's side front and rear tire split on the sidewalls. the front tire split on the complete circumference of the tire, between the wheel and the tread. these were goodyear tires, p245/45r18. these were the original tires for the vehicle. there have been no other problems with the other two tires. *ak
2004 nissan maxima with 24k miles. equipped with goodyear eagle r-sa p245/45r18 tires. left front and right rear tires shows signs of sidewall separation (one inch from rim). tread depth was measured at 7/32 and 8/32. talked with dealer who said he had another maxima goodyear replaced the tires on due to sidewall separation. goodyear has offered to replace the defective tires at less than the pro-rated warranty amount. this complaint is meant to bring attention to possibly a "bad" production run or engineered defect. *nm
Dt: 2004 nissan maxima that has continental, contitouring , tire, size p225/55/r17 leaked air almost to the point of being flat. this happens over a period of time, such as two weeks, these leaks were slow, and occurred four tires. consumer was driving about 35 mph in a school zone and heard a pop, pulled ove,r and the right rear tire was completely flat on the rim. this occurred near a gas station ,and consumer drove there to gas station to put air in the tire, but the air system at the gas station would not work. called family member to bring an air piggy and the tire would not inflate. waited for tire dealer to open because this was early in the morning and they could not inflate the tire. upon further inspection they note tha t inside of the tire running vertically from the rim to the top of the tire had a split. due to tread separation this could not be repaired , and a new tire would have to be purchased. contacted dealer, who suggested discussing this matter with tire manufacturer. contacted continental, who said consumer would have to taketire to an authorized service center which was a considerable drive for inspection of the tire. called a second time, and they said they would send out a call tag and request tires back. consumer had all four tires replaced with a different brand and paid for this out of pocket. have not sent those tires to continental at this time. *ak

Maxima 2004 has eagle rs-a 245-45 tires which became cracked in a circular pattern at 32,000. goodyear replaced tires and offered prorate, but cost was still $555.00. internet maxima owners have found cracks on inside of tire as well as early as 16,000 miles. i believe that this is dangerous. the noise was greater, the grip of the tire seemed to be less, the bumps on the road were more noticeable, and the tires felt "wishy-washy" at times. once i put on the new tires again with eagle rs-a the car felt totally different and better, although it was bitter sweet to have the same tires again. can you help in this matter please? *nm
I have a 2004 nissan maxima se. while the car was at the dealer for routine service, the technician told me that the inside sidewalls of all 4 tires were showing cracks, and the front passenger tire had cracks and a bulge coming out. this was when the car had only about 26,000 miles. he said the cost to replace the tires is $245 each tire, plus installation costs. he strongly recommended that i replace at least the two front tires as soon as possible. i then took the maxima to a different nissan dealer for their opinion as well. that dealership agreed that all 4 tires had cracks on the inside sidewalls, and the bulge was there on the right front tire. they recommended that i replace all 4 tires. i told them it seems absurd that tires that are so new would need replacement, and they said it was a common problem with these tires and i should go to goodyear to see if they would cover all or part of the replacement cost. i called nissan headquarters (1-800-nissan-1) and was told the same thing, it is not nissan's responsibility, but goodyears'. going to goodyear this afternoon to have them checked -- and if safety risk exists i will of course have to buy new tires. i have a wife and a 21-month old baby, and cannot risk a blowout or some other catastrophe that may cause injury to my family. no tires should fail like this so quickly. general rule is if some object or thing goes into a tire, that is just a risk that the owner must bear. but if the tires show problems coming from the inside out, that indicates a tire defect. i will update this after meeting with goodyear. *nm
