Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the transmission failed on the vehicle. the contact stated the transmission slips and jerks very hard when going between gears, but mostly between second and third gear. the vehicle finally stopped altogether. the contact was driving when the vehicle stopped moving, but the engine was running. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told the transmission would need to be replaced, but did specify why. the transmission was rebuilt for the vehicle. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 85,000.
I purchased a 2004 nissan maxima in august 2006, and it all seemed fine for a bit but once i reached about 84k miles, the transmission started having problems. first, when i shift from park to any other gear. it seems to either hesitate to shift into gear and once it does it shifts in a horrible knock! it continues to do the same problem as well as slip gears while in motion. it usually slips from 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd. it causes the car to rev and shifts when it wants. that makes it snap even harder. i took the car to a local transmission shop which placed it on the computer. the error was a faulty camshaft position sensor (bank 1). cost was $181.52. i'm still having the jerking with second gear but only when i slow down easily. the car shifts now, but the jerking continues. the local transmission shop said that i would have to replace the transmission for around $3,500 in order to alleviate the jerking and transmission slip issue. i bought a nissan because they are supposed to be dependable long lasting cars. i would hope that it would last over at least 100,000 miles before any sort of problems would even occur.
Same as everyone else with the same make and model. car rpm's go way high and then jerks and goes into gear. happens after the car is warmed up. does not happen on the highway but it does happen getting off an exit. downshifting from gears 3 to 2 the car jerks and hesitates almost giving me whiplash. i went to a nissan dealer to have the problem diagnosed but the test can back with no problems because the service engine light is not on. this car is not safe to drive but it is my only way of transportation so i have to keep driving it. nissan needs to own up to there mistake and have the car recalled. i am not the only one having this problem.. please help us out and do the right thing to make our cars safer to drive..thank you

The transmission on my 2004 nissan maxima jerks violently and skips gears while driving and when it goes back into gear it feels like i have been hit from behind. there are hundreds of complaints for this same issue and i can't believe nissan hasn't been forced to do a recall yet. this problem started at about 75,000 miles and is only getting worse. *kb
I have a 2004 nissan maxima se & it has severe issues with vehicle jerking into gears, jerking while riding at slow speeds, jerking with engine revving when trying to pick up speed. i am not sure what lead up to this issue, but it is not safe possibly causing an accident leading to serious injuries or death. the failure which seems to be some type of default with the transmission occurs everyday when, driving especially in stop and go traffic. i cannot afford to pay $3500 for a new or rebuilt transmission, but i did have my transmission fluid changed at a nissan dealer, but that did not help the problem at all. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated that when he tried to shift into reverse, the vehicle would move backward. the vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where the contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the current mileage was approximately 78,000. the failure mileage was approximately 76,000.
Unsafe start. engine will hesitate before going into gear at the same time will initiate high rpm's on it's own causing a unsafe start in crosswalks, driveways and public streets. the engine/transmission will engage in high rpm's on its in multiple gears before moving forward causing sudden jerks and fast starts. transmission has a hard transition from gears causing a vibration throughout the car when changing gears. the nissan north america corporation was notified in writing of this problem in 2012. *tr
Based on what i have read online, this is the same transmission issue that thousands of other 6th generation nissan maxima owners are experiencing. my 2004 nissan maxima's automatic transmission shifts violently during a change from 1st to 2nd gear, 2nd to 1st and drive to reverse. during this time, the car is unable to accelerate for about 2 seconds and when it does it jerks it so hard it feels like i was rear-ended. this happens on about 20 to 30% of the shifts from 1st to 2nd gear and a little less often in the other two situations. i has nearly caused me to get into 2 accidents over the past 6 months when the car would not accelerate when coming off the shoulder and onto the freeway. this transmission issue is very hazardous and needs to be recalled by nissan. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while the contact was driving approximately 35 mph, the transmission shifted from second to first gear violently. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and they stated that a regional representative would call her back to assist with the intermittent defect. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
Tl- the contact owns 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated the transmission on the vehicle is not shifting properly. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told the torque converter failed and the transmission would need to be replaced. the dealer recommended the vehicle not be driven until the transmission is replaced. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 164,000.rl
Transmission failure on 2004 nissan maxima caused car to decelerate rapidly and nearly caused a crash. transmission had to be replaced by nissan dealer. car had 87,000 miles on it. *tr
I have had issues with my car since i, purchased it back in april 2004. i wrote a letter to the nissan headquarters and did not receive any response, currently my vehicle jerks when i try to reverse then it skips before it gets into gear. also to add, once the car gets to a certain speed i can feel the car rev-up before it even catches gear which is mainly in the first and second gears. i have been to the nissan dealership which they replaced my motor mounts and i am still having the same problem as before. nissan needs to recall maxima 2004's. *tr
At about 77,800 miles our 2004 maxima 3.5 se was jerking as it automatically shifted from gear to gear. it started valentines day. the car does not shift correctly, and when it does shift the jerk is so severe that it feels like it could give you whip lash. i am very unsatisfied with this maxima, for a car of this caliber this was not my expectation. with all the complaints about the transmission why is there not a recall on these vehicles to fix the problem? how do you get nissan to pay attention and replace/repair this transmission problem. too many people are complaining about the same thing. premature failure of transmission with normal driving habits. high number of internet complaints with the same symptoms indicate a factory defect. took my car to the transmission shop the told me it something that nissan is aware of and it should be recalled. he advised me that it is the valve body which cost $1200. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving 25-30 mph, the contact noticed that the gear shifted hard several times as if someone was hitting the vehicle from the rear. the vehicle was taken to a local transmission ship where the contact was informed that the transmission valve body was defective. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 77,087 and the current mileage was 77,809.
I bought a used 2004 nissan maxima in 2008. the car had 42000 miles. i took it to a nissan dealership and they said there was a problem with the powertrain and replaced it for free as it was still under warranty. the car now has 93000 miles and the car has been jerking for months. the transmission just went out on the car yesterday when i was driving home. *tr
Purchased the 04 maxima se used in 2010, after nearly one year, while driving down the interstate the car jerked severely and began to slow down. got off the interstate and noticed a burning smell and the transmission locked in 5th gear, notified the dealer and they had the trans repaired. beginning of this year (2013) same issues, starts revved high, jerks into gear, no power @ take off or no movement at all and a burning smell from under the hood. still making payments so went back to the dealer and found out then the repair that was completed 2 years earlier was the second repair done to the transmission. the warranty that came with the repair had expired and now i am left with a vehicle i am still making payments on, can't drive and now have to come up with a way to pay $2500-$3000 for a new transmission. i love my car and would like to continue to enjoy it for at least a few more years but this is ridiculous to know there are this many complaints concerning one vehicle and the manufacturer not seem to care enough to correct the obvious issues. *tr
I bought a used 2004 nissan maxima se and i'm having problems the jerking, thrusting forward and the bad down shifting. i took the car to the nissan dealership act like they never heard of a problem before and they said the transmission needed a flush ($200), so i did, it continued kicking. i took it back to nissan they drove it and told me it need motor mounts ($2,000), i got the motor mounts replaced at local auto shop. they have no problem wanting me to spending money on diagnosis the problem, when they know what the problem is. the transmission is a recall issue they don't want to make public. i'm very disappointed in nissan. i've had 2 altima, i have a 1997 max and never had major issues (i drive that more than the new car) and i have a 2004 armada, i would not recommend them to anyone any more. they pride themselves in not selling lemons...well i got one! i don't understand how i can have 1997 max and not have transmission problems and new model car 2004 and having all these issues. i cannot afford a $3,800 transmission and a new set of $500 motor mounts.....another problem i've had with this car is the a/c keeps going out...there is no leaks in the lines but there is something wrong with the a/c pump so i was told by a local repair shop. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle began to jerk excessively as the engine exhibited an abnormal increase in rpms. the contact allowed the vehicle to rest momentarily before proceeding but the failure persisted. the failure persisted for two months before the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where the contact was advised that the transmission would need replacing. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 106,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle surged independently. the vehicle also would not respond immediately when the driver applied the accelerator and instead, would stall for seconds before jerking forward. the vehicle was taken to a personal mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that he would need to replace the transmission. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 94,000.
I just bought a 2004 nissan maxima last month, and it has been giving me problems, the transmission shifts hard on 2nd and 3rd gear, when i start the car it rattles, i have taken the car back to where i bought it from, they told me that they repaired it and that it was the transmission mount, but i know different, the car is still giving me problem. this is an on going thing, i have a little girl and don;t want anything to happen to her if this car stalls on the highway. i would like to know what can i to resolve this matter. thanks *tr
I bought a used 2004 nissan maxima in 2007 - worked well for about a year. at the end of 2008 my car began to slowly jerk when decelerating and pulling off an exit or making a right hand turn. i took the car to my local mechanic (not nissan) and was told my transmission is slipping. i tried to contact nissan but i need to bring it to their dealer and pay $200 just for them to look at it and tell me what i already know, or be ignorant and say they can't find anything like they did to other maxima owners. for over a year all i would use this car for was to and from work, if i had to run errands or go out, i walked or rode with a friend. for the amount of money i pay each month, that is unacceptable. as of july 2010 my car cannot drive more than 15 miles at a time without having to take off the battery and reset the car so it can go another 15 miles. i still owe money on this vehicle and yet i had to go buy another car just so i can get to work. i have been researching this problem for the last 3 years and there are hundreds of the same complaints!! when is nissan going to own up to their responsibility and do what is right. unfortunately, it seems that someone will have to get severely hurt or lose their life in order for nissan to recognize. i have several friends with the same vehicle and have the same issue, and have spent $1,000+ at nissan for them to fix everything but the transmission. we have done motor mount replacements & transmission flushes and still have problems. when is someone going to stand up for the consumers and do something about this? i am paying a car note and insurance to see my car sit in my parking lot everyday. the car jerks violently, and gets worse over time. 500 complaints have been filed on here, and still nothing has been done. there are thousands of blogs and websites of people complaining about the same thing. i contacted my attorney general's office and received basically no help. i will never buy another nissan! *tr
2004 nissan maxima sl with 5 speed auto transmission shifts hard, won't downshift, sometimes kicks hard, delayed shifting and exhibits all other symptoms others are complaining about here and on the blogs online. shop wants $3000 for rebuild, it's time to make nissan take care of its obligations. *tr
Transmission keeps jerking off. gears get stuck. *tr
2004 nissan maxima transmission started to go at 108,000 miles. car halts and then bucks from 1st to 2nd gear and from 2nd down to 1st gear. at a red light, car halted and bucked in the middle of an intersection and nearly caused an accident. no accident occurred, but the problem continues to persist and the transmission needs replacing. multiple 2004 and 2005 nissan maxima's have transmission problems due to installation of faulty transmissions, yet no recall has been issued. i have found 20-30 internet reports of faulty 2004 and 2005 nissan transmissions. i am afraid that this car could do the same thing in the future with a worse outcome.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. after disengaging the brake pedal the contact attempted to accelerate but the vehicle would hesitate. the failure recurred intermittently but became frequent over time. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics or repairs. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
I have a 2004 nissan maxima and the transmission is slipping and jerking, just like all the other maxima complaints. *tr
Transmission jerks on my 2004 nissan maxima i bought this car with only 35,000 miles and im still paying for this vehicle. i don't use it much and i have now 58,000 miles on it. the car is supposed to be reliable and i've got nothing. dealer has not helped and i called nissan motors of america and i told them about all the online complaints and they told me they could not help me. this is a costly repair and don't think its fair that i have to pay 3500 on a new transmission. this should be recalled by nissan and fixed for everyone who has this problem. *tr
For the past 2 months my 2004 nissan maxima has, at periodic times, starts puttering like it is about to stall, then service engine light comes on. does this for either a few miles or my entire trip. it also jerks very hard when changing gears, ex from reverse to drive. with in the last month the transmission now feels like it is slipping. recently, got stuck at a red light in a very busy city district b/c my car was fine but then would not move, finally jerked back to life & started going but at the next stop light did the same thing. i have been doing tons of reading on this & it seems like 2004 nissan maximas have a horrible reputation on their transmissions. i believe do to all of these complaints a recall needs to be done as soon as possible. i cannot afford to keep throwing thousand of dollars on a car that i have always serviced properly & until i hot the 100k mileage mark never had a problem with. this car is dangerous to drive due to the severe jerking while changing gears, stalling out, etc. please look into asap. thanks

Nissan maxima transmission issues. maxima transmission jerks into 1st and 2nd gear. nissan has said that the motor mounts need replacement. i have had transmission fluid changed and regular maintenance as far as oil changes and tire rotations. i have researched and found many other nissan maximas of the same year with the exact same problems. *tt
2004 nissan maxima 5 speed automatic: has sever transmission problems. slams in and out of gear and gets stuck between 3rd and 4th, 2nd and 3rd. there are thousands of complaints on the nissan forums due to a manufacturer error in the valve bodies. nissan will not issue a recall and this is a sever safety issue , the car can slam out of gear at any speed or shift down a gear while traveling at normal highway speeds. every problem i have read about says this problem starts as soon as 40000 miles but usually around 75000 miles. i wish i never bought a nissan and now i am scared to drive it at all and still owe over 10k on the maxima. please help get this recalled and fixed for thousands of motorist. *ln

I previously reported my 2004 nissan maxima se as having power train transmission problems. i took my vehicle to bp nissan and they did a diagnostics on the transmission and determined that a new transmission was needed. nissan to call me back today, we'll see. after the dealer did the diagnostics, i was driving home and what a coincidence, the "check engine light" came on. it seems that every time i have my car to the dealer for one thing, shortly after lights start coming on. i guess they don't reset or something as they should. *tr
Transmission slams/bangs from 2nd to low gears at approx 20 mph during down shift. also has hesitation/pause causing a huge jerk/push when changing shifting from 1st to 2nd gear at aprroximately 20 mph. seems to occur after car has warmed or heated up after about 10 - 20 minutes of driving. both incidents has extremely high potential of causing a major accident which could possibly cause major injury or even loss of life. cannot understand why nissan has not voluntarily initiated a recall for this major/serious defect in their product.
2004 nissan maxima transmission failure. *tr

Transmission on 2004 nissan maxima jerks into gear from 1st to 2nd and vice versa. only does this when engine is warm. car slams into gear going from reverse back into drive. *tr
I own a 2004 nissan maxima; automatic transmission. when driving from first to second and occasionally thrid gear the vehicle will jerk and sometimes hesistate when shifiting to the next gear. after seeing over 500 complaints on the same issue, i think its about time something be done about this.
I have an 04 nissan maxima with a 5 speed auto transmission, it is shifting hard from 1st to 2nd gear, then bogs and suddenly slows down between 2nd and 3rd gears before shifting hard again. i have been placed in very dangerous situations while driving in traffic and suddenly having to compensate for this transmission reaction. not very safe with kids in the car, by the way. looking for information on a recall for this year and model car. thanks. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima se that has 105k miles and needs a new transmission. the transmission started to slip and now the vehicle barely moves in first gear. after doing some researching online, this appears to be a recurring problem with the 2004-2005 maximas. the transmission design is faulty but nissan will not issue a recall. there is no reason why a 6 year old vehicle should need a new transmission. *tr
I have a 2004 nissan maxima and the transmission seems to be slipping when i down shift. after looking this problem up it seems to be a extremely common problem with this car. i have viewed countless board's that have expressed this problem. i have even talked to many dealerships that also that have said that this is a common problem with this car. i am wondering why there is not a recall on these cars and why nissan is permitted to make and sell this car with a know problem with out a recall of some sort. *tr
