Problems with 2013 Nissan Altima AIR BAGS

On average, the 2013 Nissan Altima starts to “feel” problems with the AIR BAGS and its various aspects after 27 278 miles.

Recently reported AIR BAGS problems on 2013 Nissan Altima

Light on passenger side of car is still giving us trouble. we made complaints about 2 yrs. after purchasing the car. we noticed the light came coming off and on in those two years before. co said they were waiting for an official recall. they got it and we were told to bring the car in to be fixed. we did. they said it was fixed. about two weeks later until now the light keeps coming on and off. i am worried about my wife. we are both 77 yrs. old. i am worried about however is sitting in my car in the passenger seat. i do not know if air bag is on or if it will go off by itself. i called nissan dealership and they said nothing could be done . they said i could bring it in only when they could see the light on. happens when car is in motion.

My car was a part of the altima airbag recall in 2014. the action was taken by the dealer. the altima has always had the issue of the passenger seat not registering it's occupant on an intermittent basis. the only way to have fixed this was to shut my car off and recalibrate the system. today, nothing was in the passenger seat yet the airbag and seatbelt light were lit. this means that the altima believed someone was in the passenger seat even though it was completely empty. i no longer feel safe for a passenger to sit in the altima.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the front passenger side air bag warning light remained illuminated, while the seat was occupied. the contact stated that the failure was intermittent. the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v244000 (air bags). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

I have a 2013 nissan altima. the passenger seat air bag occupant sensor comes on showing that the passenger air bag is turned off when an adult is sitting in the seat. the adult is 200 lbs. the light will stay on while driving. my car was recalled for the occupant sensor classification reset. it did not change anything. it still does the same thing. i have complained about it numerous times to the dealer. the dealer says there is no fix for this and no codes in the computer. it seems that if the passenger sits in the car, buckles the seat belt before the car is started then the issue happens less often, as if the car only checks if the seat is occupied on startup.

The passenger airbag disabled light has come on twice in two months while my wife (110 lbs.)was seated squarely in the center of the passenger seat.. i notice this right after starting on a drive. my wife moved around in the seat trying to get it to recognize her presence with no luck. it reset-ted both times after stopping the car and having her exit and reenter. this vehicle had already had this issue serviced under the previous recall. i took it to the dealer last week. they said that they could not duplicate the problem so they sent me home without making any repair. i have video evidence put forgot to get it out of my wifes phone before she left for japan for aq three week trip. i will upload it when she returns. this is my wifes car so i will put her name on the contact form.

My passenger air bag light intermittently comes on when an adult is seated in the passenger seat. sometimes it comes on when no one is seated. soon after this first happened, i received a recall, and on may 9, 2014, took my car to the nissan dealer. it was "reprogramed" and did not fix the problem. i took it back on june 6, 2014, and the report says "general maintenance". the problem persisted. i took it again on nov 14, 2014, and the "strain gauge" was reset . i was told to return if problem persisted, which it did (and continues to do). very frustrated, i returned june 25, 2015. the problem "cannot be verified", so nothing was done. i returned again sept 8, 2015 and was really truly upset that this serious potentially life threatening problem is still unable to be eliminated. this time i was told that it is a "design" problem and cannot be fixed by mechanics. i was told engineers have been called to the dealership to address this same problem and that they are unable to fix it. i find it hard to imagine that nissan wants to dust this off. it cannot be fixed? i imagine the next time i go in they will poke out the light bulb, or perhaps put black tape over the light so it won't "disturb" me. should i just "not worry"? what is the remedy, and how much longer do i have to drive the care with the worry that the air bag will not operate in the event of a crash? i find this intolerable.

The passenger side airbag light comes on indicating that the airbag is disabled when a passenger is in the front seat.

If i'm driving, when i try to stop the car, i press the brakes the brakes do not activate. the car does not stop it keep rolling on. i have to pat the brakes to stop the car or press the brake a second time for the brakes to catch. it feels as though it slips pass the brakes! i also took my car to nissan for the latch recall every since i got the recall "fixed" the pass air bag light pops on when no is in the passenger seat and my car will state that i have 100 miles (more or less) of fuel but my fuel gage will read empty and i will need gas as the gauge states!

The red airbag indicator light does not go off on my vehicle - the exact symptom listed in recall campaign id pc214. the dealership said that even though my car is a 2013 as indicated in the recall notice that the recall does not apply to my car because the vin number was not included. my car is the same year, with the same problem indicated in the recall and they want me to pay to have it fixed. i have reported this to nissan and i am waiting to hear back.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the front passenger side air bag warning indicator kept indicating "off", regardless if the passenger seat was occupied. the vehicle was taken to the dealer more than 4 times and they provided no repair solution. the dealer reset the code more than once and reset the sensor, but the failure recurred. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 16v244000 (air bags), 15v681000 (air bags), and 14v138000 (air bags). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 3,813.

Shacking and unable to control and no one till this day??? why ? i'm sorry but dodge chrysler nor any dealer ship has my air bag and 98% of parts in stock... so now what??? i spent a lot of much $$$$...

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the air bag light remained off even when a passenger was seated in the passenger seat. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to repair the sensor, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 32,000.

This is the fourth time the passenger air bag sensor light came on with an adult in the seat. nissan has attempted to fix it numerous time without success. i question whether the bag will go off in an accident. i was told by the local dealer that i should call corporate and recorded the complaint. they said they would get back to me. *tr

Even after being repaired for a recall, the passenger airbag light continues to be on intermittently. the dealer did a simple inspection and claimed no problem found. they refused to perform detailed investigation unless i pay for the diagnosis, because the warranty has expired. *tr

We have had multiple incidents in this vehicle of the front passenger seat airbag light not extinguishing, indicating that the airbag is not armed, even with an adult passenger seated and buckled. we have dealt with this issue on and off for as long as we have had the car, despite the recall last year apparently designed to fix this issue. i decided to file a complaint today based on a news article i saw this morning that indicates that this is an ongoing issue for many drivers of this vehicle. there does not seem to be a logical reason why sometimes the light goes out and sometimes it stays on. the concern is that the passenger airbag would not deploy properly if it is ever needed. *tr

This has occurred multiple times since the recall work was done on my car. when driving the passenger air bag off light will turn on, even when an adult passenger is in the passenger seat. i've taken the car into the dealership to address this issue and was told that the system is functioning properly. the only way i've found to fix this issue is to pull over, turn the car off and turn it back on. sometimes it takes multiple restarts for resolve the issue. *tr

I'm having and issues with the passenger side airbag not engaging when i have a passenger in the front seat, not registering that there is someone sitting in the seat.. another issues is water saturating the passenger floor boards all the way to the back seat when is rains outside

This is for the current safety recall issue on this model. i had the dealer "fix" the initial recall but have had numerous incidents afterwards with the airbag. this includes the airbag light intermittently going on/off while my wife is in the passenger seat. in addition i have had the same issue with nothing in the seat. i have video and photo evidence of this occurring after the car was sent to nissan for the initial "fix". when this occurs i am forced to pull over as soon as possible to restart the car. i have told my local nissan dealer face to face that i do not feel safe driving their car which is leased from them and they did not take my concern seriously. i believe i should be allowed to return the car and terminate my lease since i don't feel safe driving my family and friends around in this family sedan. thankfully i have not been involved in any accident but it makes me extremely nervous if an accident were to occur. *tr

I have taken my nissan altima 2013 to premier nissan dealership in fremont ca multiple times for passenger side airbag indicator, will remain on even when an adult passenger is sitting in passenger seat. nissan dealership in fremont ca has tried to fix the problem multiple times but problem still remains same. only thing that changed was me, that i stopped complaining about it to dealership. today i saw the news that the problem still exists for other people so i thought of submitting a new complain today. i have filed a complain about a year and half ago. *tr

Vehicle was serviced by nissan dealership per nhtsa campaign #14v138000 on 3/11/15. on 3/12/15, the occupant classification system continued to operate improperly (e.g. not detecting an occupant in the passenger seat). this has been noted several times since the ocs software was updated by the oem. *tr

Front passenger airbag warning light says passenger airbag is "off" even when someone (adult) is sitting in passenger seat. happens intermittingly and light goes off (passenger airbag "on") after a while-5 to 10 minutes. complained to dealer. they said there was no recall. saw no problem.

Tl*the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the air bags failed to deploy and the seat belt failed to lock and restrain the driver. a police report was filed and the contact sustained chest injuries . the vehicle was taken to the dealer where an inspection was done on the vehicle. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 13,000. the vin was unavailable.

I purchased a 2013 nissan altima in september of 2015 with less than 43,000 miles. the car was really good gas and i was really happy with the purchase. in february of 2016 while me and my husband was driving in traffic we came to a stop and the car shut off. we started the car up fine but as soon as we placed the car in drive it shut off again. we repeated these steps over and over again until he was able to keep the car running while in drive so we could pull on the side of the road. we were very close to the warranty expiring so we took the car to antioch, ca nissan dealership. they said that they would have to "duplicate" the problem before moving forward. they kept our car for 3 days to no avail. they said that they could not "duplicate" the problem and to come pick up the car. 2 days later we started experiencing the same problem. we decided to take the car to a different nissan dealership in concord, ca hoping that we would get a different outcome. needless to say they couldn't "duplicate" the problem for 2 weeks!! the guy in services admitted that they have many cars coming in with the same exact problem and he knew how to get the car to act up so that they could move forward. how crazy is that??? he called me 2 weeks later and told me that they had to "reset" the transmission system. he also told me that even though i was very close to my warranty expiring that if the problem occurs again that they would still honor the warranty because the problem pre-existed. not even a whole 2 months passed when my husband and i were moving from california to texas did my car started having the exact same problems it had before but this time i noticed that the transmission was slipping. i was going 80 miles per hour on the freeway when my car slowed all the way down to 40 miles per hour while driving in front and on the side of a big rig!!!!

Yellow light on dashboard shows that the passenger air bag is deactivated even though an adult passenger (approx 150 lbs) is seated in passenger seat. this has been occurring intermittently since car was new. took car to dealer several times. i was told they couldn't find anything wrong. then received recall notice for this problem. took car to dealer and recall fix was supposedly performed, but problem still persists. nhtsa needs to take action on this widespread problem before someone gets killed. *tr

The passenger airbag light turns on when a passenger is present, meaning if in an accident the airbag will not deploy. the dealer has had the car in 5 times for this issue and is not able to repair it since now the vehicle will not give a code to fix it. i was able to get nissan north america involved and they said the vehicle is repaired, how do i feel safe having a passenger in that seat with out certainty that airbag will deploy in an accident. when we met with [xxx], from nissan north america, the engineer, he stated that this airbag is under rated and causes more harm than good. why would an engineer from the factory say something this ridiculous, this is why we bought the car..for the safety ratings and all the airbags. he stated they only cause black eyes and broken noses, to which i said "its better than the alternative..,death. i am not feeling safe in this car and hope someone can help us get it rectified. thank you for your time. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Air bag indicator light shows airbag off with adults in the passenger seat. multiple occurances, had reprogramming done, problem persists.

Driver and passenger seat airbag showing disengaged while occupants in the vehicle. no airbag dash notification on for driver and passenger seat.

Had recall for passenger airbag light performed in june. have had multiple occurrences of the pass airbag light turning on with an occupant in the passenger seat since the recall. the latest happened yesterday with my wife seated in the passenger seat. its beginning to concern me that in the event of an accident the passenger airbag will not deploy. judging by the complaints on this issue this is still a problem that nissan hasn't been able to fix. nhtsa needs to reopen an investigation for this issue. *tr

I purchased a 2013 nissan altima s from carmax on 10/5/14. the car was suppose to be a birthday present to myself seeing as though i had not purchased a car in 12 years. i was very excited, but shortly after purchasing the altima, i started to hear squealing coming from the brakes, and also roaring and rumbling which started in the front of the car, and proceeded to the center. i also complained about the car locking up and driving sluggish, and then releasing once the rumbling briefly stopped. i am also hearing an annoying whining sound coming from the right side of the vehicle. when i took the car back to carmax, they told me the roaring was coming from my windshield washer compartment that was loose, and that my brakes were fixed. needless to say, i left and drove around the corner, and the squealing brakes and roaring came back. i took the car to a nissan dealership in my area, and after telling them about the roaring and the whining, the service manager told me that he's quite familiar with the sound, and there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. he stated that the whining sound is coming from the power steering and the roaring is coming from the way i am driving the vehicle. how dare he! i only had the vehicle for a month before i took it to the nissan dealership. he would not even try to look into the list of issues i requested to be fixed. the nissan manager told me to go back to carmax or i would have to pay for the brakes to be fixed, and even charged me to rotate my tires. i left paying him for a service that i did not originally come in for. i went back to carmax and they finally fixed my brakes, but still could not find anything wrong that would cause the extremely annoying roaring and whining noises. this has been a nightmare, and i am thinking about taking legal action. *tr

As many others have previously reported, this 2013 altima will not detect an adult passenger (140+ lbs) and will turn off the passenger airbag. the initial safety recall work was performed on the car (prior to our purchase of the vehicle), but the problem continues to happen. we have talked to several dealers who have not been able to do anything to fix the problem because it appears that nissan doesn't know how to fix it. this huge safety concern makes the car unusable when we need to have more than one person in the car and we cannot get the airbag to work properly. nhtsa: please force nissan to do something about this issue! *tr

Front passenger air bag warning light stays on with adult passenger in seat. indicates "air bag off" continually even though there is an adult weighing more than 120 lbs. in passenger seat. recall service for "ntb14-027 ocs reprogram" had been performed by nissan dealer on this vehicle on june 18, 2014. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the air bag sensor on the front drivers side malfunctioned and failed to illuminate when the front passenger seat was occupied. the air bag sensor randomly illuminated. the vehicle was to be inspected and diagnosed by an authorized dealer. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 6,300.

Tl* the contact owned a 2013 nissan altima. while at a stop, another vehicle crashed into the rear of the contact's vehicle. the air bags failed to deploy. a police report was filed. the rear driver side passenger sustained a head and hand injury that required medical attention. the driver also sustained a head injury that required medical attention. the vehicle was destroyed. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 12,000.

Passenger airbag light is stating that it is off, when the seat was occupied by an adult. there was a recall issued and the car was taken to the dealership to have this fixed. the recall did not solve the problem. it has been taken to the dealership multiple times since the recall to have the problem corrected. i have video evidence of the last time it happened. the dealership ([xxx]) states that nissan can not do anything further. the nissan 800 number stated the same. both want to push the issue to the other with no one providing resolution. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

My passenger air bag light indicating that the air bags are off keeps coming on. i went to have it fixed when the first recall came out but it is still coming on saying my air bags are off. *tr

For over a year this vehicle has had an issue where the airbags will turn themselves on and off . no matter if there is a person in the passenger seat or not . the seat can be empty and the airbags warning indicator light will randomly come on and off . the same is true when there is a person in the seat . the vehicle was repaired numerous times right after purchase , it was fixed for the safety recall for this problem and it has been repaired numerous times since . the problem continues . nissan corporate has refused to re purchase this obvious lemon and has said they will continue to attempt to fix it . since they have been unable to identify the problem ... they now have resorted to blaming the dealers . search vimeo for 2013 nissan altima airbag light and you will see the video of this issue . *tr

Air bag light still doesn't work properly. an adult can be sitting in the passenger and it comes on, at times no one can be in the seat and it still stays on. *tr

Cpsc: i1490345: 2013 nissan altima. consumer stated the air bag light is on. *ln the dealer informed the consumer, there was nothing they could do. the vehicle was recalled earlier in the year, for the same problem and a software fix was done. however, the air bag light illuminated again. *jb

The passenger airbag off light comes on sometimes when an adult is riding in the seat. the car was brought to the dealer service dept. 4 months after the purchase with this complaint. the problem occurred multiple times after with a total of four trips to the service dept. including the recall for this problem. the problem is still happening. this isn't just an inconvenience but a serious safety issue. either nissan is ignorant of how to remedy the problem or they just don't care seeing as how this problem affects several nissan models and also infiniti. *tr

I have a 2013 altima that was part of the airbag recall. after taking the car to the dealership for the recall i noticed that sometimes the airbag still shows to be off when my wife is on the passenger side. i called the dealer and was informed that the passenger needs to weigh 115 lbs. my wife borderlines that weight. however, if the law states that a passenger must weigh 80 lbs to ride in the front of a vehicle, the 115 weight set by nissan gives me reason for concern. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

My nissan dealer supposedly said they fixed a faulty passenger air bag sensor. since the "fix" the sensor is showing that there is no passenger in the seat when in fact their is someone riding there. when i went for my last routine oil change about three weeks ago, i let them know of the problem but they said that i would have to come back and schedule a different appointment to have this fixed. *tr

Airbag sensor doesn't work properly. while the car is in motion, the light turns on warning that the airbag will not deploy when a person is buckled in the passenger seat. my vin is not included in the recall but i've noticed this issue for over a year. my nissan dealership ignored my complaint a year ago when i asked them to look at it.

I took my car to the nissan dealer near my home for the safety recall on the front passenger air bag not working properly. they performed the software "fix" which was issued by nissan. approx. a week following this "fix" my 155 pound son was riding in the front seat and once again the light illuminated stating the passenger air bag was off even though my son who is 6 feet tall and well over 100 pounds was clearly sitting in the seat. i have not reported this to the dealer because i already know they have done all they can. this is however very bothersome to me as i hear this "fix" in fact fixed nothing at all for many people. i have 2 teenagers and an 8 year old and would appreciate being able to safely transport my family in my brand new car. this is my 2nd nissan altima, i thought i was buying something safe and reliable for my family. *tr

Various times the passenger airbag off indicator will come on a stay on even if a passenger is stilling in the seat. it sometimes says on until the car is turned off and then restarted or can stay on for 30 minutes or more and then go off. sometimes the red dash seatbelt light will come on even when just the driver in the car and the driver's seatbelt is fastened. i have brought the car to the dealer three times relating to this and they did not find anything wrong, the third time the mechanic said that it happens with his altima also and he thinks it is just running a self-test. i don't agree and it worries my passengers when it come on in the middle of a trip. it worries me also that both indicators seem to be random on when they illuminate. several times when i drop off a passenger and the car remains running and gets out of the car, the red seatbelt indicator comes on as if the passenger is still in the passenger seat without the seatbelt fastened. *tr

Wife was driving west bound on ohio st rt 125 doing 40 mph when a car going east bound on ohio st rt 125 attempted to make a left hand turn in front of her and hit her head on bringing the car to a complete stop in just a couple feet. none of the airbags went off . the seatbelt did not lock up. none of the safety equipment on this car worked during this head on collision.... updated 02/19/15 *bf updated 10/28/2015*js *tr

Air bar passenger light that air bag is off goes on when passenger 110 pound adult sits in passenger side. brought car in to dealer october 28th 2014 for software update, as of october 30th 2014 problem still exists dealer said it is passenger's biometrics that is the problem not the car, solution is unacceptable, have no confidence. dealer is chevy chase nissan, bethesda md adviser [xxx] turner 240 395 4069, 240 395 4048. read this problem occurs in other vehicles but is not identified for my vin number. lighting is checked off because warning light goes off. i have pictures taken yesterday of warning light going off while adult passenger is sitting in passenger sear. please note that problem existed since august and was not picked up until i read the nhtsa website this week. this a constant recurring problem that exists every day. problem must be addressed to prevent fatality in the event of an accident with no air bag being deployed for passenger. *tr

With 130 - 140 lb passenger in front passenger seat, dashboard indicator signals that front passenger airbag will not deploy. vehicle has been returned to dealer for recall service under nhtsa campaign number 14v138000, but this did not resolve the problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that while parked, the front passenger side air bag on light failed to illuminated when the seat was occupied. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 3,000.

I've had the passenger airbag light that is in the center of dash come on multiple times even with an adult sitting in the seat. the first time i took my car to the dealership (8/9/14), they said this is new issue and that they would do some sort of software update and the problem will be solved. the issue happened again so i took the car back in (11/19/14) and they said the update might not have taken properly, so they did the update again. well it took several weeks, but the issue happened again. i took the car in (3/16/15) and they said that they will do a complete reprogram just in case there was a lingering issue from last time. well, that did not work. the issue is still happening and i took the car in yesterday (4/14/15) and the dealership called me today and said that they performed a function test and couldn't find any error codes, so they said that they couldn't do anything. they said that if it happens to bring it in asap. with this issue being so intermittent, i have resorted to taking photos of people in the passenger seat of the car while the car is in motion. i feel this issue needs to be addressed more seriously. *tr

We have tried to have nissan fix our passenger side airbag at least 3 times (one including for a safety recall issued) and the problem is still occurring. the dealership has replaced the sensor once and reprogrammed the computer system twice. the most recent time this occurred is the date above. the airbag is off when i am sitting in the seat and i am a 130 pound female. this doesn't happen every time i am in the passenger side but it could be off on a trip 15 minutes away from my house and on the way home it could be on. we have notified the dealership that this still occurs and we met with what they said was one of their "best technical experts" and were told that there is nothing wrong with our vehicle and they will do nothing about this problem because it is working to manufacturers specifications. they said it could be the way i am seated in the seat or the type of road we are driving on. we have multiple videos of me in the passenger seat, sitting upright, with the light on stating that my airbag is off. *tr
