Recently reported SUSPENSION problems on 2013 Nissan Altima

Turned into the street leading to my home, started to accelerate, heard a loud noise and the vehicle swerved into the opposite lane. this is a narrow road, and luckily there was no oncoming traffic,or there would have been an accident.limped the vehicle home and saw it was drooping down on the drivers side and the rear wheel was out of position. towed to dealer and was diagnosed as broken lower link or control arm. my bill was 1600.00 to replace right and left arms and parts. this is not right,as it is only 6 years old with 48k miles.this is definetly a defect and this vehicle should be recalled before someone is hurt or worse. thank you

My daughter nearly lost control of the vehicle while driving in a 40mph zone. in dry conditions, the car began to fishtail and was very difficult to steer. i inspected the car in our driveway and the rear control arms had rusted out and the driver side rear tire was pointing inward. i had the car towed to the fuccillo nissan of latham dealership and they confirmed the control arm corrosion issue and recommended the entire rear suspension be replaced. i had two calls with nissan to discuss the issue they would not grant any financial assistance for the repair as the car was out of warranty. the repair was completed at the dealership on 3/9/2019.

Vehicle when driving suspension springs sounds keep having problems can't have 3 passengers sit on back, due to causing weight barrier springs smell something burning and no power when driving.

Takata recall. when driving the car and make a right turn the car appear to drag. at this point i have to move my feet off the accelerator. turn the wheel straight and slowly press the gas. never happen until i make a turn.

While driving at high speeds 55mph a clunk was heard while in a turn, and the lower right end of the car sank down. the steering went completely crazy and out of control. i had to slow down to 20mph for the entire 30 mile trip home. this was the second time this happened in the last 2 months. the first time was back in january 2019 when the left one broke and almost caused me to wreck again! and now i see there is a federal investigation about this exact thing.

My clutch in stuck in "park". this has been dangerous for my family and i bc if we are stuck in traffic i would put my car in park, and when traffic starts moving again my car is now holding up traffic behind me bc my car is stuck in park. this car is only 6 years old and i've already had to get the transmission replaced. nissan needs to know they can't sell cars that cause a danger to families!!!!!!!

I was driving my vehicle down a city street at approximately 35 miles per hour, when the rear end of the vehicle suddenly started making a rubbing noise and the vehicle almost lost control from swerving. i was able to get the vehicle back home, and my boyfriend put the rear end up on a jack and determined that the passenger side rear support arm was broken. the next day we had the vehicle at a local firestone shop, and the mechanic there confirmed that the control arm had broken due to severe corrosion at a factory weld site.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving at an unknown speed, the rear passenger side wheel became jammed in the wheel well and almost detached from the vehicle. the contact immediately had to pull the vehicle over to the shoulder. the vehicle was towed to treiber nissan (320 n comrie ave, johnstown, ny 12095, (888) 439-3352) where it was diagnosed that a new rear suspension was needed. the vehicle was currently at the dealer awaiting repair. the manufacturer was notified and did not assist. the failure mileage was 100,020. audio available*cw

Driving my altima on tollway felt a shimmy went half way into next lane when i gained controll steering wheel was not straight when i investigated found rt rear control arm rear atachment point broken in half looks like rusted in half took pictures and had car towed to dealer

Rear drivers side lower control arm rusted completely through and broke off. right side is equally rusted but has not broken off yet.

Driving vehicle at highway speed on snow and ice covered road when passenger side lower rear control arm snapped off from the vehicle causing a loss of control. vehicle was not driveable and had to be towed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while attempting to turn into a parking lot, the contact heard a noise and the vehicle did not move. the contact exited the vehicle to find that the rear driver's side control arm was fractured. the vehicle was towed to cochran nissan of south hills (3200 w liberty ave, pittsburgh, pa 15216) where they replaced both rear lower control arms. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 94,000.

I was driving and my rear lower control arm broke. i took it to the dealership where i bought it they said it broke because of rust and corrosion and that my warranty wont cover it because it broke from rust and corrosion. i bought the car a year ago and i bought it as a certified pre owed vehicle. i was driving and turning onto another street when it happen.

After taking my vehicle to the dealership for a oil change they informed me that my lower control arms needed to be replaced and that it was a common problem amongst 2013 and newer nissan altimas. there are millions of 2013 and newer nissan altimas on the road and a common problem amongst these vehicles is the lower control arms. these parts are very important to the steering and suspension on front wheel drive vehicles and these parts should not fail on five year or younger road vehicles. the failure of these parts on surface streets can be potentially deadly and on highways more likely to cause horrific casualties due to the vehicles being i filed a complaint already but you already knew about this problem a year ago and nothing has been done. my husband and i were doing 65 on the highway and had to avoid a collision. the dealership told us the lower control arm looks like it just crumbled into pieces. that's not normal or safe. i really hope something is done before someone gets hurt. uncontrollable during a failure. i would like to bring this issue to the attention of nhtsa and hopefully you can contact the appropriate sources to be proactive and prevent any future accidents that the nissan altima might create

I was driving under 25 mph (in a straight line) on a smooth rode when the driver side of my car felt like it locked up for a second. my steering wheel immediately lost alignment and the wheel needed to be kept at 2:30 to drive straight. i made it less than a mile after the initial incident (i thought it was just wheel out of alignment) but with each rode bump i hit, my back end got looser and looser. i finally pulled off and packed my car. when i went to move it, in reverse, the was a large noise and i could tell something was fractured in the suspension. the driver side rear wheel was crashed into the wheel wheel and the control arm was broken. this appears to be the same thing nhtsa action number pe18013 is in regard to, and i live in cleveland, oh, with more than 100,000 miles of my car's 130,000 miles put on in northern ohio.

While driving yesterday the vehical became difficult to steer and shook vigorously at 35 mph . stopped to inspect and found the right rear lower control arm broken.

Pulling out and the rear lower control arm broke and fell on the ground!

While driving on the highway i heard a "pop" and the steering became unstable on my 2013 nissan altima with the car veering left and right. i took my foot off the gas and was able to guide the car off to the side of the highway without incident. i thought i had a blow out but the tires were fine. if it had been rush hour i probably would have collided with another car. i was able to slowly drive the car off the highway and to a local nissan dealer where they indicated i had a rear control arm failure. the left rear tire was clearly leaning outward and the steering wheel was way out of alignment. nissan replaced (see attached receipt) the link compl rear, link complete, r; two rod connecting and adsorber kit. they also aligned the car. i had them repair both the broken left suspension items as well as the right as i didn't want this to happen again. i do believe this failure is a serious safety issue and really could have caused a crash in heavy traffic. this incident occurred on the highway when i was travelling in a straight line.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving 65 mph, the suspension arm fractured. the contact had to swerve out of the way to avoid crashing. the vehicle was towed to lia nissan of colonie (2233 central ave, schenectady, ny 12304, 855-983-6728), but no assistance was provided. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 95,000. *dt *tr

My control arm snapped while i was driving, due to corrosion. i was driving down a city street into a parking lot.

While driving my 2013 altima the driver side rear lower control arm snapped - lucky car was going slow enough where no accident or body injury occurred. the car just came off the thruway 10 mins before this happened. all work was done at the dealer since purchase and we are the only owner.

Rear passenger control arm broke going down highway at 60 mph. back end started to fishtail. luckily did not get into an accident.was able to drive to a dealership and get it repaired for $800. not sure if i feel safe in the car anymore.

Was approaching highway speeds when car pulled hard into other lane. it felt almost like slipping on ice. traction control system lit up so i figured it was something faulty electrically. luckily didn't hit anything, so i kept driving. a few seconds later it did it again this time worse and with shaking. i pulled over on the highway to have a look and noticed one rear control arm was sheered completely in two pieces and the other was almost sheered off as well. luckily no kids were in the car and no one got injured but could have been pretty ugly. the car is in great condition, no rust or any reason for this part to fail so catastrophically.

on january 14th 2019 while driving 30mph, the rear control arm on the altima failed and made the car un-drive-able, the rear end of the car fell to the ground. luckily there was no injury as a result of this failure. the car was taken to a local mechanic who diagnosed the control arm failed due to corrosion, and i had the car towed to herb chambers nissan in westborough ma. it was in their service area from 1/15/2019 - 1/7/2019. this is a very dangerous safety issue, components such as control arms that affect a person's ability to control a car should not be corroding let alone failing in 6 years. nissan needs to recall cars with this problem and deal with the manufacturer of the part/metal supplier. the issue is same as the one in the nhtsa investigation: rear suspension control arm failure nhtsa action number: pe18013

I recently had to replace the rear control arms as they snapped with no warning as we were backing out of a parking space. ironically only days after my annual inspection. i was told by my mechanic who had to order the replacement parts from nissan, that his contact at nissan knew about this problem and admitted it was only a "soft recall" with no public announcement, so there is no course of action due on behalf of nissan to fix this. this is not acceptable, especially since i had 2 small children in the car when this happened and we were out of town. this unexpected replacement cost me over $900 to fix something that i should not be responsible for since nissan knew of this issue. please help to recoup this cost!

On 12/27/2018 the rear lower control arm assembly (right) fractured on my 2013 nissan altima. this is similar to the nhtsa action number pe18013. i was driving to a destination near my home. as i was nearing my destination i noticed the car handling unusually, with a slight sway. as i parked my car i thought i had pulled up too far and put it in reverse to back up. i heard a loud sound and walked around the car to notice the rear right wheel resting high in the wheel well. i elected to have the vehicle towed to the nissan dealership for repairs. the tow operator showed me what had happed once it was on the flatbed and he stated that mine was probably the third one he had towed and maybe there was a recall. the next day the service center called and confirmed that the right rear lower control arm had broken. the vehicle was repaired that day and an inspection of the left rear lower control arm was performed and showed no compromised integrity. upon taking delivery of the car i also took delivery of the broken parts and have included pictures of the compromised area, which are attached. it appears that the partial penetration weld was compromised and caused the thinner of the two joined material to fail.

Turning a corner in a housing development when heard a snap/bang and the rear left side of the car dropped. steering became unsteady. drove short distance to home and looked and found the left rear lower control arm had rusted thru and broke away from where it is bolted to the frame. the vehicle has 70,789 miles. checked the right side control arm and it shows signs of rusting but is still reasonably solid looking.

February 2018, driver side rear lower control arm broke off (rusted) while driving., towed to garage, part replaced.checked right side it appeared ok. december 2018 christmas night while driving down the highway the control arm on the right rear passenger side broke off (rust). had to be towed , control arm and other bent parts replaced. have pictures had trouble downloading

I was driving my vehicle in town (35 mph) and was going under a underpass. all of a sudden i noticed my anti slip light came on, steering wheel became hard to steer, and a loud banging coming from the back of the car. i pulled over and looked around the back of the car, seeing nothing out of the ordinary. i continued on, thinking it was possibly something wrong electrically, maybe with the anti slip system. drove a few more miles, including on the highway (60 mph) and the car still was handling difficult. arrived home, looked around the back end of car, noticed the rear passenger side wheel was tilted in and lower control arm (right) was snapped. called tow truck driver to tow to repair shop. over $1000 in repairs.

I was driving home from work and notice that my back right wheel was shaking. at first it was minor and then about 5 miles into my drive the shaking became severe. i pulled over to the side of the road and called for a tow. the experience was scary, the shaking became very scary like the wheel was going to fall off. i found out from a mechanic that my control arm right rear broke and it was good i got off the road when i did. my right wheel was turned on it's side. i just purchased this car in june 2018 and was told by nissan marlborough that it was a safe car.

Rear lower control arm broke due to corrosion while the car was moving

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while the contact's daughter was driving 55 mph, the vehicle pulled to the left. the vehicle was taken to suburban nissan (1800 maplelawn dr, troy, mi 48084, 248-649-2300) where it was diagnosed that the rear driver's side control arm was fractured. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 102,000.

Driving on city street then highway at normal speed. noticed traction control light on and felt swaying in rear of car. heard loud noise and swaying worsened so i pulled over. after having car looked at was told could not be driven as lower right rear control arm had broken right off! car had to be towed on flat bed. repairs are underway. very scary situation with sudden loss of control.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving 20 mph, the rear passenger side wheel detached from the lower control arm. also, the rear driver side wheel was cracked. the dealer (fuccillo nissan of latham, 976 new loudon rd, latham, ny 12110, (518) 250-4380) stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 120,000. *tt*jb

Left work going to the grocery store. noticed the steering was sloppy with less control. i went through a patched area in the road and the whole car shook and there was a noise in the passenger rear. i called my husband and he met me in the grocery store parking lot so he could drive the car home. he drove about a quarter of a mile and called me to pull into a parking lot. he got under the car and saw that the lower control arm had rusted and broken away from the frame. he also noticed the passenger rear wheel at a strange angle with the top leaning into the wheel well. we took the car 2 blocks to the shop. the shop had to get the parts from nissan and when they ordered them they were told the part had been redesigned so both sides had to be replaced. they replaced both rear lower control arms, both rear shocks and other suspension parts. i am just lucky the tire didn't fall off while i was driving.

The left rear lower control arm rusted off at one of the welds near the bushing. the part broke while backing up in a parking lot. the car was the driven on the street not knowing what was wrong.

While backing my car out of a parking space, i heard a pop and rear of the car dropped. i got out and saw the left rear of the car was lower, top of tire not visible. the dealership where i purchased my car new (sept. 12, 2012) was only 3 miles away on secondary roads, so i took my car there to be looked at. the dealer called me back the next day and told me the left rear lower control arm had broken and right rear lower control arm was cracking in the same place and needed to be replaced. the service advisor and service manager both said they have never seen anything like this happen before on a six year old car.*dt consumer stated failure of suspension on both rear passenger side. updated 12/12/18*jb

While driving down the road the rear control arm broke off. the car only has 46,000 miles and is 5 year old yet rusted so badly from the inside out that the arm completely broke off..

After taking my vehicle to the dealership for a oil change they informed me that my lower control arms needed to be replaced and that it was a common problem amongst 2013 and newer nissan altimas. there are millions of 2013 and newer nissan altimas on the road and a common problem amongst these vehicles is the lower control arms. these parts are very important to the steering and suspension on front wheel drive vehicles and these parts should not fail on five year or younger road vehicles. the failure of these parts on surface streets can be potentially deadly and on highways more likely to cause horrific casualties due to the vehicles being uncontrollable during a failure. i would like to bring this issue to the attention of nhtsa and hopefully you can contact the appropriate sources to be proactive and prevent any future accidents that the nissan altima might create.

The control arm on my 2013 nissan altima broke while entering the freeway on (7/20) during rush hour, causing me to lose steering in the rear of my vehicle. the equipment failure caused me to be stranded on the highway, forcing me to have my car towed to the nearest auto repair shop, costing me $2,220 in repairs. my vehicle only had 72,720 miles when the malfunction occurred. in reaching out to i-90 nissan in sheffield ohio, which is where i purchased my vehicle, the staff was friendly but deferred me to nissan corporate to file a claim with consumer affairs. consumer affairs denied my claim because i did not take my vehicle to an 'authorized dealer'. while stranded on the highway, the last place i was thinking about taking me vehicle was to the dealer (15+ miles away) that sold me a car that had a major equipment failure in less than 5 years of owning it. i needed to have my broken control arm replaced, the driver side control arm replaced because it was about to break due to rust and stress fractures. in addition, i needed my stabilizer arms replaced. attached is a photo of the broken control arm. you can see on the broken control arm there is a hole at the top, which was not welded closed, allowing water and salt to enter, rusting the control arm from both the inside and outside. this excessive rust is what led to the control arm to fail and break.

While driving on a city street the right rear lower control arm broke away at the pivot connection on the body. the control arm at the pivot connection is heavily rusted. the left rear control arm is still connected but is also heavily rusted.

In a matter of 13 months, the rear drivers side lower control arm failed and then later the rear passenger side lower control arm failed. the metal cracked and completely came apart where it is bolted to the car. both times it failed in my driveway. one time it failed when the car was in motion pulling into the driveway, the other time it failed when shifting from park to reverse when trying to pull out of the garage. the car could not be driven after they failed. a letter is going in the mail this week to nissan consumer affairs and i am mailing a copy to the nhtsa in washington, dc. *tr

The front suspension is very poor. my car fall in a little hole and one of the front wheel was broke, because the suspension was bad job. when i turning star the engine sounds sometimes very rare.

The strut mount problem. i had changed this a year ago. i fixed this problem by warrenty. but, 2 weeks later, it was broken again.

Hi i took my vehicle for regular inspection and have reported a problem with the passenger side wheels making noise. also reporting car drift side ways while at high speeds. with initial analysis from nissan service center have mentioned that there is some issue with shifting of a spring on the on the track rods. i raised this to my extended warranty service provider. and they have mentioned that it has to be done under tsb and will not undertake the repair. hence i am submitting this incident report you you so investigate if it actually falls under tsb or not. and if it is then how i can get it fixed under tsb norms.

Tl* takata recall. the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to complete the recall repair for nhtsa campaign number: 16v029000 (latches/locks/linkages). the dealer scheduled an appointment and, when the contact arrived for the repair, they stated that the hood latch was on back order and the dealer was unable to provide a time frame that the part may become available. the contact was also informed that there was a fuel pump recall and the vehicle was repaired. the contact was not aware and the dealer did not mention nhtsa campaign numbers: 15v468000 (suspension) and 16v244000 (air bags). the contact had not experienced a failure. parts distribution disconnect.

Tl* takata recall. the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign numbers: 16v244000 (air bags), 16v029000 (latches/locks/linkages), and 15v468000 (suspension). the part was not available within a reasonable time frame to schedule the recall repair. the dealer did not give a specific date for when the part would become available. the manufacturer could not provide an estimated date for when the vehicle would receive the recall repair. the contact was not experiencing a failure. parts distribution disconnect.

Note: this car was purchased used with about 30,000 miles on it. when driving at highway speeds, both hands on the wheel, going straight, unexpectedly and without warning the car starts to wander and veer off to the other lane. it is much worse if it is a windy day. you have to be ready immediately to make a steering correction or you run the risk of getting into and accident. on the nissan forum, many 2013 altima owners are complaining about this steering and suspension defect. nissan has not addressed this safety issue but has known about it and has fixed it on the 2016 models. why haven't they issued a bulletin with a fix or recalled these year model altimas that are affected?

I have been to the dealer several times with the complaint of the car constantly drifting left and right and not being able to control the handling of the vehicle. it often feels like you are driving on three wheels and the stability shifts. i do not feel safe driving the car as i don't have full control ,nor do i like having my son in the vehicle and try to avoid freeways but it pretty much drifts at all speeds. i have spoken to the service manager, service director, and regional manager at nissan north america but they claim to not be able to reproduce the issue. however, every time i get in it i feel vibrations and experience weird whining noises as well as the drifting and bouncing all over the roads. i have also experienced where i'm trying to slow down and it seems like the car speeds up and when trying to speed up the car is sluggish. nissan really needs to take ownership to fix the issue before someone loses their life!! this is ridiculous to have to deal with these issues for a newer car that people are still paying for!!
