Recently reported SUSPENSION problems on 2013 Nissan Altima

The rear driver side link complete nissan part# 551b1-3tao on my 2013 altima snapped at the weld where it bolts to the subframe, this happened july of 2019. today i had my altima in for an oil change and noticed the passenger side rear link complete has severe cracks in the weld in the same exact place as the driver side that snapped in july 2019. i had the driver side repaired/ complete new part was needed. now i have to replace the passenger side part as it is a serious safety issue as a loss of control to the rear suspension is the result of it should snap likevdriver side did in july. luckily my daughter was driving straight at 25 mph when the catastrophic failure occurred to the driver side rear link complete. i have contacted nissan usa and they have done nothing other than saying sorry but there is no recall and it's out of warranty. i believe nissan used parts at manufacture that were made of substandard steel or cheap recycled steel, these parts should last much longer than 6 years, they are vital suspension components that when fail at higher speeds can cause a loss of control of steering and ride safety. 2 parts failing within 2 months of each other is not a coincidence. thankfully it will only cost me additional money at this point. nissan altima from 2013 need to be recalled for this serious rear suspension part failure for safety of owners and their families.

I began noticing a loud cracking noise which seemed to originate from the rear of the car whenever the rear wheels would go over sharp bumps. i had the dealer take a look and i have a cracked control arm.

My husband was driving in a parking lot at about 5-10 mph, and went through a pothole. he heard a loud noise and felt the car dip. he looked under the car and saw that it was detached from the frame and the rear wheel was at an angle. he took it to the nissan dealership where it was inspected and repaired for approximately $1300. the rear control arm had broken completely. i checked for recalls and found there were none, but i also found there were multiple complaints on this website for the exact same issue for the rear control arm breaking suddenly, which signifies to me that there is an issue with the control arms in this model car.

I was backing out of my driveway about 5mph and heard a loud thud, as if i ran something over, looked under my car and the rear wheel control arm had come detached and was broken. i called the nissan dealer who said both control arms need replaced because the other one is cracked. i started researching as i found this odd to happen in a 2013 vehicle & found more than 347,000 cars may have this same problem. this is a serious issue and all vehicles need recalled as this could lead to the driver losing complete control of their vehicle and possible death. i am grateful my 18 yr old son who is a new driver was not on the turnpike when these decided to give out and that i was just backing out of my driveway. not only is it a safety hazard but when this happens it could also lead to thousands of dollars of additional damage if you are actually in motion with the vehicle. as i am in need of a vehicle i have to pay for these to be fixed which i was just quoted a whopping $2,100. shame on nissan!! someone is going to die if the control arms of the 2013 nissan altima do not get recalled and these vehicles are left on the road without the repairs needed.

I was driving in a roundabout, when all of a sudden i heard a loud snap coming from rear, drivers side wheel. i started losing control of the the vehicle but was luckily able to make it to a side street where i pulled over. i noticed the rear wheel was tilted a bit sideways, and had it towed to a mechanic near by. the diagnosis was a broken control arm.

While traveling with my wife in november 2018 i felt a slight shudder. the car became challenging to control. i carefully drove to a parking lot. a visual inspection revealed the passenger side rear wheel cocked at an odd angle. a car transporter was called and the driver observed a broken suspension component. the car was trailered to my nissan dealer, for repair. they noted the repair as: 'check rear susp c/s rear control arm is rotted out . . . 120 replace right rear suspension lower control arm 982 cpa 3.0' on wednesday july 3, 2019 i experienced the same terrifying sensation. again, i managed to maneuver, park and have the car transported to mike barney nissan for repair. this time it was suspension failure on the driver's side.

The lower, right rear control arm has cracked, but not failed fortunately. it is in the nissan shop right now. the diagnosis is that that the left side is probably going to fail in time. i looked a the mechanic's observations and i agreed with the diagnosis, so i had no choice but to tell the service guy to make the repair on both sides. the car has about 80,000 miles on it, now, but the noise started about 10,000 miles ago. i noticed a thumping noise at low speeds, especially when going over small bumps, and especially speed bumps.this should be considered a recall, but most altima owners don't know about the problem and are likely going to find out after a failure. hopefully, the will failure will not be catastrophic. i question the metallurgy and more importantly the welding methods use on the original control arms. hopefully nissan realizes that they have a potentially huge liability issue here.

While driving the vehicle on a maintained two lane county road at the posted speed limit the vehicle suddenly darted across the road and became increasingly difficult to steer. once stopped, you could see the the vehicles left rear passenger side tire was tilted in and rendered inoperable. i have attached photos of the control arm both where the vehicle was towed from and from the repair station it was towed to. the control arm was rusted and broke away from the frame/proper connection. we have been advised by the auto repair shop that both rear control arms need to be replaced, the broken one and the opposite side. the rear drivers side is in the same condition. this vehicle only has 86,100 miles on it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving at a slow speed, a loud clunking noise was heard from the rear of the vehicle. upon inspection, it was discovered that the rear wheel was pushed inward. the vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the rear driver side control arm was fractured due to rust and corrosion. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 97,000. *as

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving approximately 5 mph, an abnormal noise came from the vehicle and the contact noticed that the rear passenger tire was bent inward. the vehicle was unable to be driven. the contact's husband was a professional mechanic and stated that the rear lower control arm fractured. the dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

I was driving to work and on a highway, ready to get onto a major interstste rt295n in nj. i was going aprox. 45 mph when the car started pulling drastically to my right,i thought i had a flat tire. pulled the car over to inspect, and my rear passenger tire was not flat but bent as if it was coming off. i had to have the car towed to a mechanic where he confirmed the yes in fact the tire was coming off! he said if i drove much further i would have lost my tire it was hanging by a rusty thread!! upon further inspection he note the whole rear subframe is rusted out and i needed not one but both lower control arms replace because the drivers side was about to separate also. this is going to cost me big buck along with a rental car,as this is not something insurance will cover. apparently therre have been many issues with this model/year car exactly the same as my incident.there was no warning nor previous symptoms to this happening. i could have benn hurt or kiled not to mention someone else near me on the road! i have included pictures.

During safety inspection, the passenger side rear control arm was discovered to be cracked. the wheel was about to fall off the car. pictures (attached) show severe corrosion around the weld seams and knuckle crevices. i kept the parts for further inspection. noted that there is an open investigation with nhtsa in regards to this failure.

Passenger rear lower control arm failed due to corrosion near the frame connection point while travelling at a low rate of speed over a speed bump in parking lot. drivers side rear lower control arm also showing signs of corrosion. car driven in mn with 90,000 miles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving 35 mph, the lower control arm fractured. the vehicle veered to the right and the contact lost control of the vehicle. the contact stated that the body of the vehicle would not comply with any turn and the frame stayed to the right. the vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that a new lower control arm was needed and scheduled to be installed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure by the mechanic. the manufacturer stated that they may issue a recall for the failure in the future. the dealer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 126,000.

When entering the highway on the coronado bridge at low speed the rear left control arm broke and left the car immovable. a tow was required and police for traffic control. upon further inspection the right side lower control arm was cracked and ready to fail also. there was not any previous correspondence from nissan warning of the possible failure and no reason to expect this to happen with a 2013 car with 85000 miles.

My driver's side lower control arm broke and i lost control of my vehicle. it corroded and broke on one side. i was driving at 28/30 miles an hour, hit a bump and heard something pop and the car spun out of control.

Passenger rear lower control arm unit failed near frame connection point while travelling through right hand turn at low speed. other similar complaints for this vehicle model suggest winter road salt may be attributed to part corrosion and premature failure. car driven in upstate ny with 120,000 miles

Rear control arm on my nissan altima 2013 came apart on an interstate pushing me on to the left lane almost at 65 mph. got really scared as i usually drive with my new born but luckily he was not in the car when this happened. the car has less than 60k miles and i had to replace them on both sides on the rear as they mentioned the other one too is going to break soon. really disappointed as had to make a huge repair spending 1300 bucks for a car that is only used to run few errands over the weekend as i commute on train for work. *dt*jb

In motion lost control. took to a repair garage. passenger lower control arm rusted. they suggested to contact dealership. towed to dealership and called nissan corporate. waiting for an answer from both dealership and corporate. unsafe condition.

Backing up in parking lot, hit curb at minimal speed and felt and heard loud sound. car listed when driving forward. problem not apparent initially, so drove car home. the following day it was apparent that the rear right control arm and coil spring had broken. (see photos). the car had 67,000 miles at the time. regular service at nissan dealer never indicated any rust or other problems. i feel fortunate that the control arm did not break while driving at highway speed. cost to replace both right and left control arms over $2000. i feel at the minimum nissan should be required to inspect the control arms. the car is garaged in connecticut, washed regularly, and not driven for 6-8 weeks during the winter months while residing in warmer climate.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the rear lower control arm assembly on the passenger side was completely rusted and rotted off the frame mounting. the vehicle was towed to smithtown nissan (535 middle country rd, st james, ny 11780, (631) 361-9696). the dealer stated that they had not seen this type of failure in the past. the manufacturer was contacted and denied the contact's request for assistance with the repairs. the manufacturer referred the request to a regional manager who was supposed to call the contact back. the vehicle was currently at the dealer awaiting a decision from the manufacturer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 101,000. *bf consumer recieved a call from the dealer and was told warranty was only for 3 years at 36,000 miles, vehicle was way beyond warranty. consumer also stated original part is no longer available online. while turning into a parking space complete failure happened.*jb

On june 2nd 2019 i was turning from a local street to rt 303 when heard a pop noise. it caused my wheel to jerk quickly to the right and my dash board light turned on. when i pulled over to the side to look and see what it was i saw that the body of my vehicle was resting practically on the tire. i went into a parking lot about 400m which was in front of an auto body. i left it in the parking lot over night and the next day i took it across the street where there is an auto body. when they lifted up my car they saw that the rear left part holding up my shocks had rusted and eroded and snapped and that my rear right side was rusted and cracked.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving approximately 15 mph, there was an abnormal sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the rear passenger side control arm fractured and needed to be replaced. additionally, there was severe corrosion to the control arm and the secondary hood latch on the vehicle was faulty. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v029000 (latches/locks/linkages). the vehicle was not repaired. a dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Rear lower control arms broke while traveling on the highway due to significant corrosion.

Yesterday my passenger, rear control arm broke and i almost lost my wheel. luckily i was going less than 30 mph. *js

I was exiting the highway at 30mph when i suddenly lost control of the car. i was able to pull over safety thank god. i got out and that's when i noticed that the control arm on the rear driver side had snapped off due to rust.

Takata recall i was driving down a straight rd about to turn on to the highway when all the sudden the car started swaying back and forth and dropped to the point where the tire was under it and turned to the left i had to have a flatbed tow it to my house i was on a main rd in akron . the car has never been in any type of accidents and is well taken care of thankfully i didnt get hurt when this happend. the control arm completely snapped there is rust but isnt rusted all the way through.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while parking the vehicle, a popping noise occurred coming from the rear driver's side of the vehicle. the contact noticed that the rear driver's side wheel was bent. the contact's brother-in-law, who was a mechanic, informed her that the rear driver and passenger side lower control arms were detaching. the contact called herb chambers nissan of westborough (located at 75 otis st, westborough, ma 01581, (508) 870-0800) and was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle; therefore, it would be repaired at the contact's expense. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer and was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

The control arm on my 2013 nissan altima broke at the pivot point on the passengers rear side while driving.

I was driving my vehicle about 25 mph leaving work when i heard a thud/clunk from the passenger side rear of the car. the traction control light came on, i pulled over and looked at the car. i though i had a flat because the car had been handling 'oddly' for about 30 feet. i didn't see a flat, drove the remaining mile home and when i saw the car in the driveway the passenger rear tire was at an angle to the car. it was pointed to the right, while the other tires were aligned straight forward. i called my local nissan dealership and they told me to not drive the vehicle, as they had one in last week with similar conditions (same year, same model) roughly same mileage. they arranged for a tow truck to pick up the vehicle and drag it onto the bed of the truck. they diagnosed that the right rear control arm had failed, causing the tire to disconnect from the control arm while i was driving. i requested that they check remaining control arm suspension components and they confirmed that the driver's side until was also cracked, but not completely broken through as yet. the nissan manufacturer rep visited the dealership and stated that the repairs were due to rust, causing both control arms to fail, therefore not covered under warranty in place. the vehicle had fewer than 89,000 miles on it when the components failed, there were no indications of any problems previously, and the car was in the dealership three week's prior due to a transmission replacement. this is my sixth and last nissan vehicle i have had no prior events like this with my other nissan vehicles. this part failed without any warning, luckily at low speed in my own neighborhood 1 mile from my home.

I've owned the car for less than 2 years - it's a 6 year old car with a single previous owner, always lived in a garage, well maintained, etc. i was driving home on the highway one morning and suddenly my steering wheel yanked out of my hands, swerved to the right, and locked up. i could barely keep the car in the lane and had to drive like a video game, constantly shaking the steering wheel back and forth. i tried to make it one more exit, but couldn't safely so i pulled over. only had to test drive it ~20 feet before we realized the drivers rear wheel nearly fell off. we laid on the ground and looked underneath the car and saw the control arm had snapped and broken off due to rust. sure enough in the shop, my mechanic found that both sides had completely rusted and both had to be replaced to safely drive the car. this problem is due to a faulty design of the control arm that allows water to pool on top and not drain - the water sits on the control arm in a divet and the metal rusts away. fortunately, my mechanic cleverly fixed the problem on the replacement control arms by welding a plate on top to prevent water collection and future rust.

Without warning...i was reversing into my driveway and i heard a loud pop. when i exited the vehicle to take a look, my rear control arm snapped and dislocated the wheel. i am thankful this didn't happen twenty minutes before while on the taconic state parkway driving at highway speed (55 mph). the car needed to be towed to my mechanic.

Driving on rte. 376 west outside on pittsburgh on 3/28/2019 around mile marker 64 in left lane at 65 mph, car (2013 nissan atlima) swayed over into right lane on it's own (fortunate no car beside me) get car off the road onto the right berm. look underneath car and right rear control has broken/sheared (see pictures) car has 134258 miles. call nissan dealer where car was bought. the car was purchased used in 2015 (w/ 15k miles) car was certified nissan. dealership says to call nissan consumer affairs. nissan provides case number 35165440 to me. nissan consumer affairs calls and leaves message 4/3/2019. i return call to nissan 4/4/2019 to which nissan tells me that they accept no responsibility for the issue because the car is over the mileage to which they would consider warranty and says that i need to have car fixed on my own. local garage is replacing defective part. i asked the garage to give me the part once replaced. very fortunate that no other vehicle was next to me when this occurred as the result could have been fatal. upset that nissan knows there's an issue and accepts no responsibility.

At only 70,000 miles my rear lower control arm failed while driving. cost almost $600 to fix. very dangerous. car was not drivesble shortly after.

My 2013 nissan altima sedan suffered a failure of the drivers side left rear lower control arm on march 26, 2019. this incident lucky occurred as i was turning into the dealership parking lot and not at normal highway speeds (65 mph). the first indication something was going wrong with the car was the dynamic stability warning light came on. (this looks similar to the traction control light but is larger icon on the dash panel). when the lower control arm broke the left rear wheel slanted outward. the nissan dealership diagnosed the broken control arm issue and i had both left and right lower controls arms replaced. the right hand side lower control arm showed some corrosion but no crack were visible in the area where the left side broke. the break on the left hand side control arm appeared to be corrosion related (internal) because the break point did not show clean material. pictures are attached. the car has 191,000 highway miles on it. i drive a significant amount of miles per year and service the vehicle on a regular basis. the mileage on the vehicle has nothing to do with this failure. this part should not have failed on a 6 year old vehicle. i live in the western portion of ny state so the roads are subjected to salting in the winter. from other reports that i have read, this failure of the control arm seems to mostly occur with cars in the northern climate where road salting occurs. this is an issue that needs investigating by the nhtsa. it is apparent that the part is not properly designed for all climate conditions.

The control arm on the rear rusted from the inside out and broke while i was driving down a street. the car is at my mechanics now and will be repaired in a week or so. he has already contacted nissan to get the parts, but i believe this should be a recall because this has happened to a lot of other people. the part looked fine upon first look, but further inspection it was completely rusted from the inside out. very dangerous! i completely lost steering and i could have gotten into an accident! i do not trust this car anymore!

While starting out of the parking lot of our apartment to go grocery shopping, i felt a grinding sensation from the rear of the car. i did not like the sound of it so i turned the car around and parked it. i jumped out and went to the back of the car and saw the rear passenger tire from the top wedged into the tire well. i grabbed the tire and was manually able to push it forwards and back. i called a tow truck and the mechanic said that the lower control arm had rusted and broke from the frame. my extended warranty did not cover rusted parts so it came out of my pocket.1 year later coming back from a shopping trip, my wife and i were crossing the delaware memorial bridge and i noticed that the steering wheel was turned about t1/4 to the right and we were still going straight. 1minute later the car was banging very hard over any irregularities in the road. i managed to get the car home and stepped to the rear and the driver tire was top tilted into the wheel well. called a tow truck and the same mechanic said lower control arm rusted and broke. this time more damage to other surrounding parts were damaged. this should not happen to a barely 6 year old car!

Driving vehicle this morning and my steering wheel was at approximately 3:00 when going straight. i pulled into the gas station, noticed my back tire was tilted out. i looked under the vehicle and the control arm was completely disattached and it was completely rusted. i do have a video if you need evidence.

While driving my car in heavy traffic i randomly lost control of the steering and the car pulled left - coming very close to hitting another car. i drove a little further and it happened again. i was terrified as i was just entering a highway and was fearful of losing total control. i drove very slowly and exited immediately and pulled into the nearest parking lot. the tow truck driver looked at the wheel and new immediately that it was a control arm issue and he had seen it many times with 2013 altimas. i am still shaking from this event and am hopeful that you initiate an immediate recall for this issue that you are already investigating. the control arm is rusted and totally separated.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving 35 mph, the driver heard a loud banging noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. the driver lost control of the vehicle, but was able to coast it to the side of the road. the contact exited the vehicle and noticed that the rear passenger side wheel was bent inwards. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the rear driver's side lower control arm was fractured and the passenger side lower control arm was detached and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not taken to a nissan dealer, but was repaired with parts from a nissan dealer by the independent mechanic. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 122,000.

Rear control arms. broke rt rear at 110,676miles..12,000 miles later at 65mph left side breaks, coming off a overpass, lucky for me the semi truck in left lane was 10ft in front of me or i would have went right under it when my car launched to the left when it broke!! the road was dry,sun was out ,and was on a straight section of highway, also lucky for me,having the truck next to me,both hands were on the wheel, and i was able to not flip the car!!when these break, you lose almost all of your control, if the whole assembly would have came off, which is totally possible, i am certain i would be in the hospital or dead!!please help with these cars..my daughter also owns same year car,she has 2 soon the be 3 children that ride in these deathtraps!! someone will be killed if not already has!!! sent picture of 1st breakage on right side.

Rear control arms severe corrosion remove & replace knuckle axle carrier. almost crashed driving at 30 mph on a smooth road.

Rear control arm corrosion knuckle axle carrier corrosion i garage my car every night. i take good care of this car but the corrosion is too much and too dangerous.

The left rear lower control arm broke from the connection point on the chassis while driving approximately 40 mph on a straight road. this abruptly steered my car into the oncoming lane (fortunately there were no other vehicles). the car then felt very sloppy and loose. in repairing the problem, the shop noted the control arm had advanced corrosion and had failed. the right rear control arm was also replaced and had a large crack near the connection point.

We took the car for oil change at the dealer , the dealer refuse to release the car he stated the control arm is so rusted and ready to snap off, we contacted nissan corporate they refuse to do the repair it does most $1300.00 , if the control arm snap wile we are driving it could be fatal, the car have only 57,800 miles some one need to look at this problem because it does not only dangers for the car driver it it dangers for the other cars on the road, someone need to hold nissan responsible for the defective products.

Driving 60mph on a highway when both rear lower control arms snapped. the rear end of the vehicle jerked out to the left and i thought the vehicle was going to roll. i managed to straighten it out and get it to the side of the road. for a visual...i was in the left lane of a two lane road and the skid mark from the right rear tire nearly touched the white line near the shoulder. had it towed to a shop then contacted nissan who said to have it towed to a dealership. tech at the shop stated that he has seen this issue multiple times with this model/year. this could have ended much worse than it did and if one tech and one shop has seen this more than once, it's probably a widespread issue, yet....no recalls. also, the tech at the shop stated that the control arms had clean breaks with good metal showing so the parts weren't corroded through...it was obviously an manufacturer defect.

Control arms on both rear wheels have broken in the last 5 months

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle lost steering control and the traction control warning indicator illuminated. the contact pulled the vehicle over to regain control of the vehicle. courtesy motor sales, inc (3100 pleasant valley blvd, altoona, pa 16602, (814) 942-9000) diagnosed that the rear passenger side control arm needed to be repaired. the contact scheduled a repair appointment with the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 94,000.
